Why we need to Format SD Card when installing a new android build - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I found a similar thread but even that doesnt answer my question..
It has something to do with performance of Android?
Also, after installation (after format) can i copy all the files used by windows back on SD Card? or will it effect the performance ?

You don't need to format your FAT32 partition between builds... At most you would need to delete the "Android" directory before installing a new SD build. For NAND builds, you need to format your /system/, /data/, /cache/, /boot/, before flashing a new build just to make sure that you're flashing on a clean system.

I always do clean install, makes for me any rom less buggy.

Format phone before new ROM install

Hi
Is there any way to format the phone before to install a new ROM ?
Seems my general and programs settings are there allready when I flash new ROMs but I would like a 'clean' install
Thanks!

Thanks, that wipes the O.S. but files are still into phone.
I seek a way to format the phone before to install a ROM
As I understand it, the installation of a new ROM wipes your phone completely clean. Clear storage serves the same purpose.
The only way you will get any files left behind is if you have them on a memory card inside the device.
does it just rewrite files or it really format before to install ?
I have changed few ROMs lately but after a fresh install my progs. preferences are
already setted...
A kind of fdisk or format for Topaz ?

[Q] 3 questions, data.img swap? What if it goes wrong? More the 1gb?

I am currently running MDJ FroYo HD rom on my HD2.
This rom get's updated quite a lot.
-I would like to know if I can just save the data.img from my old rom, update the rom, and just use the old data.img?
I know there are already treads about this, I searched. Some people say no, some say yes.
-I would also like to know what would happen if it doesn't go right?
-And third, is there a way to increase the 1gb data.img to way more, like 8?
Thanks everybody who will help!

hey
you can use the same data img if its just an update to the same build e.g. 4.3 > 4.4, ive also used the same data img in a completely diff' build but did get a few fc's in certain apps (tho clearing cache will help with that)
as for an 8gb data img cant see the point as it will prob slow down boot time & you've got the sd card to store music, vids, maps...
but if you want to try & increase the size manually, look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824154
or here for some ready made (up to 4gb):

Hey.
Okay great that I can just keep the data.img so I don't have to re download all the apps.
I need more space for my apps, I download A LOT of apps and have the feeling the 1gb will will up soon.

if your main concern is download apps again, you should use titanium backup, (apps+data setting) since there is always a risk of corrupting your data.img when using it in a new build.
like i said you can use your old .img, but personally use titanium with a fresh .img (should have made that clear) when changing builds.
all the best

[Q] CWR

Hi all. Please forgive the noob questions.
Question #1. I was under the impression that CWR is better than DAF because it allows you to have different ROMS on your sd card and thus you can change your ROM as you like. My question is then if I have to task 29 and reformat and repartition my card as the developers request, then how is this possible as I would be wiping my sd card clean everytime I do this.
Question #2. Must I run the DAF(recovery) prior to every change in ROM? Also what is the differecnce between the Recovery and partitioning your card. Again I am not experienced even though I flash all the time.
The reason I ask is that I would like to change ROMS and wonder if I can just go from my cureent ROM, reboot and install from zip a totally different one that I have on my card. Thanks in advance.
you dont have to task29 every time., i have never used task29 and never had any issues with repationing or installing roms
the repartitionining is a pain but thats mainly only if you are going from 1 type to a different type e.g a sense rom to a cm7 or miui rom

Hi,
As Richy99 says ,task 29 is not necessary for every change of ROM.
To simplify matters, ksubedi has developed THIS TOOL (Don't forget to thank him)

Hi,
You only need to partition the sd card once.
But the ROM system needs its own partition(CWM).
This partition is dependent on the ROM .
The [OP] should give the size of the partition, depending also on EU or TMOUS phones.
Again, once you know the partition size, use THIS TOOL to make it easy.

Thanks again for helping out. So I would need a comp to always run the recovery. Is it possible from the phone itself or am I just hoping and dreaming? You did clear up one thing for though. That both the card and rom need a partition with the ROM partition being the recovery file (DAF)in the rar.. Thanks.

Hi,
With HD2 you will never get away from PC/laptop,like on a native ANDROID device.
Check out the toolkit. It saves a lot of configuration...

Safest or best way to clean off SD card?

I'm thankful for some things that remain on my SD card; that allows me to reinstall quickly....but there are things that are there from previous installs and I'm not sure what belongs and what doesn't.
What's the best or safest way to start fresh? Sort of like formatting a PC?
Backup your music pictures etc... Then format sd card, reinstall rom put music pictures etc again on your ROM and you've got a clean installation! Formatting is possilbe in xrecovery!
Ok.....I was hoping to avoid another rom install...lol...
Would this work?
1.) Save current install as Xrecovery back up
2.) Save that Xrecovery back up folder to my laptop.
3.) format SD
4.) Reinstall Rom
5.) Put the saved Xrecovery back up folder onto my X10.
6.) Restore from that back up.
Would this accomplish the same thing?

WHATEVER YOU DO - DON"T REFORMAT IN WINDOWS WITHOUT SD CARD ASSOC SOFTWARE : http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
Windows can put cryptographic crap on the card making it useless in Android.
The internal format software is flaky in 2.1 and may or may not delete correctly.

Yes that possible.
Btw, don't let him scare you. Formatting with xRecovery is TOTALLY safe.

I said the internal android is flaky, and Windows without the special formatting software. I said nothing about any apps. Part of android's problems may be due to the system not properly disconnecting app that use the card as it tries to format. Xrecovery's mini-loader would get around that issue.

Overwrite or new install

I'm loving the CM10 unofficial (SD version by LNE) and see there are various test versions... I've gone with the latest (1.0) and followed all the memory tips, tweaks and SDcard error stuff.... and it's working great - better than the CM7 I have been running...
Question is - when the next version comes out - can I overwrite the files, or do I have to do a totally new install?
Thanks
Chris
That depends on the developer. When he makes major changes he'll probably ask for clean install, whereas when they are just some minor fixes or changes, you probably won't need a fresh install, an overwrite would do.

Yep, what Marvlesz said. If the dev says fresh install, then do that. If not, then just keep the old data.img and you should be good.

Thanks - I found the instructions below elsewhere...
If I have apps on the phone that the developer does not include in the build, then when I copy the data.img over, will my apps also reappear, or will i need to install them again?
Chris
4) Upgrading Android Builds
I always do a clean install i.e let the Android build its own data.img with a clean formatted SD card.
Once this is done then copy your old backed up data.img and overwrite the newly created data.img to get all your info and settings as they were.
Caution: data.img is usually not compatible across different chef builds and its best to start a clean install if you are going to use a completely different build altogether. You can get you settings back by using a backup programme such as Titanium. Google sync will get your Contacts and Calendar back anyway if you have synced it previously to Gmail account.

Yes, Data.img should keep your applications as well as other settings or info.
Just realised, when I copy my SD card to computer there is no data.img file....
How do I create it?

It should already be there, in the Android folder. If you have SD Android and 3rd party apps then there has to be a data.img.

Personally I think those instructions are stupid. I've never had an issue just copying over the old data.img and booting first time around.
