[Q] 3 questions, data.img swap? What if it goes wrong? More the 1gb? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I am currently running MDJ FroYo HD rom on my HD2.
This rom get's updated quite a lot.
-I would like to know if I can just save the data.img from my old rom, update the rom, and just use the old data.img?
I know there are already treads about this, I searched. Some people say no, some say yes.
-I would also like to know what would happen if it doesn't go right?
-And third, is there a way to increase the 1gb data.img to way more, like 8?
Thanks everybody who will help!

Nobody knows?

hey
you can use the same data img if its just an update to the same build e.g. 4.3 > 4.4, ive also used the same data img in a completely diff' build but did get a few fc's in certain apps (tho clearing cache will help with that)
as for an 8gb data img cant see the point as it will prob slow down boot time & you've got the sd card to store music, vids, maps...
but if you want to try & increase the size manually, look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824154
or here for some ready made (up to 4gb):

Hey.
Okay great that I can just keep the data.img so I don't have to re download all the apps.
I need more space for my apps, I download A LOT of apps and have the feeling the 1gb will will up soon.

if your main concern is download apps again, you should use titanium backup, (apps+data setting) since there is always a risk of corrupting your data.img when using it in a new build.
like i said you can use your old .img, but personally use titanium with a fresh .img (should have made that clear) when changing builds.
all the best

Why we need to Format SD Card when installing a new android build

I found a similar thread but even that doesnt answer my question..
It has something to do with performance of Android?
Also, after installation (after format) can i copy all the files used by windows back on SD Card? or will it effect the performance ?

You don't need to format your FAT32 partition between builds... At most you would need to delete the "Android" directory before installing a new SD build. For NAND builds, you need to format your /system/, /data/, /cache/, /boot/, before flashing a new build just to make sure that you're flashing on a clean system.
I always do clean install, makes for me any rom less buggy.

New HTC HD2 user again :)

Hi I just wanted to say thank you to all of your hard work on this site. Both admin and developers. I didn't expect much when I bought this phone, I got very good price and it was brand new, so why not. Just got it 4 days ago.
Than I did some youtube and saw some pretty cool stuff, and here I am
Anyway, I tested out Android on SD and it was cool, I like it better than WM6.5 but camera could have been better. Feels like WM6.5 camera is better.
Now today I decided to try out Nand version. Omg it took me like 4-5hours, I know lots of information is already there, so I study, study and study. Decided to go with
[28 MAR][CWM ZIP]★★★★★HyperDroid-CM7-v1.0.4[a2sd+][CyanogenMod7 2.3.3][Tytung_R8.3]
Everything went smooth, except that I almost killed myself, it was not easy but it was fun. Lots of reboot on HD2 thou.
Anyway everything seems to be running fine and it feel smooth and good. About Ram I saw it list 411 but I guess it's correct because system use the rest.
Anyway sorry for making this long, I have one question. I tried to edit build.prop but without success. I tried and copy to memory and than to pc and edit there to make icon bigger. But when I tried to copy it over to root/system it fail. Same thing when I download text editor from Market and edit on phone, it can't save. How can I make icon bigger if I can't save the file?
Thanks for a wonderful site.
for editing build.prop you should get root explorer from the market or the internet.
then in root explorer go to /stystem and there is you build.prop
then click open in text editor and you should be fine

if you need any help with anything.. feel free to ask btw, try typhoon's gingerbread rom, no reboot issue
You need to make system R/W,its prolly in read only mode so you need to change it to read&write.
Thanks guys, I will play some more with the phone, haven't got time today. Just testing out some games. Since WM6.5 had very bad Market and barely any games. I tried not to ask to much, but do some research for my own, there's already so much written in forum. But sometimes it's kinda difficult to find the answer.
[email protected] Thanks, gonna try root explorer tonight.
Cheers!
PS: Have been having some issue, like sometimes I press back and phone freeze and stop responding. Suddenly it reboot itself. Happens 2 times.
Root Explorer works like charm!
Btw I see that Internal Storage is kinda small, it's like what 200mb or something?
Feels like some stuff that install, can't be remove to SD card. Wont this be a issue? I had a message told me that I have almost no space left :/
And btw games that I have for Android, like Angry Birds. Where does save games go? on SD card? Because I am receiving a new SD card on Friday and would love to use that one but don't wanna loose all save for my games.

some apps btw don't work on gingerbread builds.
well for the SD card you can just copy all the files you have on there to your new one right? that way you definately won't lose anything

I got 32GB Kingston yesterday, I copy all from my old card to PC, and than copy it over to new one. I had some problem at beginning, files wont install. But than I took new one out and reformat with SDFormatter, it seems to works fine now.
But unfortunately my saves files don't seems to work. I re-install Angry Birds but I have to start all over again.
Btw when you click on Apps button on homepage you get lots of apps/games, and you can make a new folder, and than customize it. But can you delete a folder call "All"

By the way when I flash to newest version of Hyperdroid do I need to make new partition so it work with APP2SD+ to work with exern patition?
Guys I just change Rom to:
[12.Apr.11][CWM ZIP]★★★★★HyperDroidGBX-v12[GRI54-2.3.3][a2sd+][TytR8.3][INSANE SPEED]
And I did the same in clockwork I made 1gb partition and install Rom. But it doesn't seems to work
I install games and they seems to be on phone only, but not before when I use other rom. What did I do wrong?
Not quite sure what you're getting at. When you make a partition, the phone recognizes that partition as additional space, or just available space the phone has. In other words, partition space is phone space according to the rom. So your apps when installed to the partition should say they are installed to phone. Correct me if this is not what you wanted or trying to get at.

Sorry if I didn't explain correctly. What I want is the extra extern space. As you know HD2 have small intern storage. And on my last Rom I did partition 1gb before I install the Rom. And when I install apps/games they all went to that extern instead of phone's intern.
But I did exactly same thing with this Rom, but it seems that games/apps that I used on last Rom, they went on phone's intern instead of that partition I made. Is there anyway I can make sure there's a extern partition? Any program that I can check with?
HD2 rules!
This week I bought my 3rd hd2 (I bought them and sold them in the past) like you study a lot and finally flashed the nandroid and finally feel android running as it deserves
BTW for density I recomend using 217, its the natural dpis for our scren size & resolution.

Some ROM's you have to turn on auto moving to SD card in the settings. Check there. Anything currently on your phone will have to be moved to the SD card via application manager.
You run any Linux? Easiest way to work with your SD card.

settings -> cyanogenmod settings -> application
That's where you turn on auto moving. Anything already installed will need moved manually via settings -> applications -> manage applications. Click on a program and choose "move to SD card".
Easy partition creation:
Reformat the whole thing in Win7 using default allocation size.
Boot into MAGLDR -> AD Recovery to enter CWM Recovery Mode
Once in CWM choose advanced, then choose Partition SD card, then choose the size of the partition (Maximum of 1024M recommended)
The choose 0 for the swap and partition away.
*Edit*
I saw you already did the partition trick with CWM. If you did that before installing HyperdroidGBX it all should work.

And yes to the partitioning. That's how I did mine. Not sure if the ROM need reinstalled as I've always had my card partitioned before the install.

Running out of space

As the title suggests on my N1 i keep running out of memory space. I use APP2SD but not all of the apps can get transfered. So what can i do to fix this problem? Some apps like Shazam i need,K-9,handcent, Flextp, but apps like Quickoffice and books i dont need but those wont delete.Any advice?
Install Titanium Backup.
Use to to either uninstall the apps you dont want (including ones built into ROM if youre rooted) AND/OR us it to force apps to the SD card.

Since they're in /system/app, you cannot delete them without rooting. And even if you can delete them, it won't help you to solve your problem. If you want many application without having space problem, you need to root, install custom rom, use Apps2SD(it will install applications to SD card Ext partition) or Data2Ext.
I'm in the same boat as well. I am consistently hovering around 21-22 mb free. With all the recent updates, it eats up all my memory.
Freaking flash is still 12 mb, google maps is 9.7 mb, music 7.7 etc. Half the google apps I don't even use such as books 4.3 mb and goggles 3.8 mb.
I have to uninstall a few programs every once in a while so I can update another...uggh I guess Google didn't see this coming when they made the n1!
I'm with you. It's annoying as crap.

Try to see if you can find move2SD Enabler (not sure if it's on the market). It forces your apps to be able to move to SD card. It requires you to be rooted so I'm not sure if that's up your alley or not
Really rooting is your only solution. With root you can have hundreds of MB free, or even cyanogen ROM lets you move all apps giving me 120 MB free with my 89 apps installed.

Are you using dalvik to sd too? Im using dtapps2sd and i get between 18--23mb of free space on any given day. My sd card is too slow for dalvik to sd, and anything below 20mb and i stop getting things like email notifications.
If you are rooted... and if you have a decent SD Card (I just use the one that came with mine). I would suggest putting something on it that supports Darktremor. I swear by it for sure... after setting up an sd-ext... installing Darktremor and then running cachesd... I have tons of programs on my phone and I constantly put more on and have not had any issues since. Before, I would run out of memory even with dta2sd. I started removing stuff I didn't use often then decided to finally try out cache2sd and... now... no more problems. It seems like it might be a bit slower on the startup than before (though I never tested to see if it actually is or by how much) but after that it seems to run smooth as silk for me with tons of room to spare. My sd-ext is only 512 MB but you can modify it as you like with the proper partitioning utilities.
Though... this suggestion comes with the advice that you might want to know a bit about what it is I am suggesting before you actually do it. Read into it before you try anything.
Others have lightly touched on it, but most of the google apps are installed directly to the /system partition which is separate from where your downloaded apps are installed. Really, the only way to get additional space is by rooting your phone. The easiest thing to do would be to get Titanium Backup and merge all the updates for system apps back into the ROM. Whenever a system app gets updated, the updated program chews up your available space unless you merge it back into the ROM.
There are also additional options like apps2sdext, but they get a little more advanced as it requires partitioning the sdcard.

honestly i am lazy, so the only thing i did was use the stock cyanogen allow any app move to sd setting. and it really made a difference. i guess if i wanted to install games that are 200 mb then this wouldnt help. but this method gave like 110mb free so i was happy enough with that.
i never researched the cache2sd or darktremor's method.
also in the past i did use root explorer to move some things from system/ to data/ etc to maximize as much as possible.
There is actually a method that can force enable "Move to SD" button for all apps. Check this link for more info
http://androidforums.com/desire-tips-tricks/160560-force-apps-install-sd-without-root.html
However, please be reminded that this implementation is actually based on the Google's app2sd.
So if you move apps with Widgets to SD, they will fail to launch the next time you reboot your phone

Any card besides pure crap is fast enough for Dalvik2SD.
And this thread is absolutely pointless. This was discussed like 100000 times. There's ONE real solution - and it's A2SD, Apps2EXT, Data2EXT, and another zillion of names for the same thing - rooting, repartitioning SD card, and moving the apps and Dalvik-cache to the EXT partition. All the other solutions are temporary, and while giving some more air to breathe, don't really solve anything for anyone that downloads enough apps.
FAQ, question 9.
Jack, I'm looking into tweaking my partition table to make use of the/cache that hardly gets used in CM.
Do you know much about it?
My biggest problem is getting solid information on the N1 partitions, since I've stumbled across conflicting info...
Any help/guidance would be appreciated!
I guess the most guidance is in the Unrevoked site, the guys who achieved S-OFF on Desire. They have a bootloader that can change the partition sizes, and there's a post on Desire forum with the explanations of booting kernel while switching the partition sizes by passing boot parameters to the kernel.
The problem with Nexus is that unlike Desire, the bootloader will still see the original partitions. So if you change the recovery and the kernel to run with different values, overriding default partitioning (which you can do - it's explained for Desire, I remember reading a thread with explanations there), the bootloader won't play the game. Boot and Recovery will have to remain in place, otherwise the phone won't boot. And if anything goes wrong and the recovery won't boot one day - you'll need to repartition the ROM from the bootloader again and install stock to get going. Lots of work.
What you can do, and what might be better/easier to do, is just to link part of your ROM there - install system apps to /cache, for example, or such. Just remember not to wipe it then
Thanks for the heads up, Jack!
Still got a lot of reading to do on this one...

Get Titanium Backup, free version will do but Pro is much better as when you batch restore apps it will do it all silently instead of asking if you want to install each one. It will also backup/restore your app data.
If you constantly change roms its a must have app.
ty, when i go into titanium back up, it says sorry, i could not acquire root privledges,. this application will not work please verify that your rom is rooted and inclused busybox and try again, i dunno if my rom is rooted or what busybox is, whats this? and where do i keep titanium backup so when i change roms i can get the app and get all my apps back? ty so much.
there is a file data.img in the android file in your sd. copy it to a safe place. download the new americandroid.rar ,unrar it then copy the content of it to the android folder in your sd. clrcad.exe then haret.exe. the booting will take a long time. after the succesfull booting copy your old data.img to replace the new one in the sd.btw americandroid roms are rooted and your case is strange.
so i wont need the new data.img file when i replace it with my old one? or are all the data.img files the same? and whats rooted mean? ty so much for help, im catching on strong cause of you guys.

rooted means, you have privilege that you can accept and deny that you cant normally, do. like you are the admin etc.
if you go down the route of using your old data.img save your mem card to the pc format the card put the new build on let it boot up and sort its self out turn phone off, then just replace ur data.img from your build you saved onto the mem card and everything will be there,
Titanium back up can save all your settings as well though. personally i use the free version it works well just the downside is you have to go through the process of clicking install on every app again but it works.

hello, posting this feedback/question here as i do not have privileges to post on the actual thread itself.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860
i used v1.6 w/o any issues outside the known limitations/bugs. 200/10 w/ 40ad2sdx-a2Recovery.zip @ 4Gb.
i only recently upgraded to v2.0 (i am aware there is v2.1 out, but the issues i list arent addressed in the changelog; plus i havent had time to flash the new version). 300/45 w/ 40ad2sdx-a2Recovery.zip @ 4Gb.
1. every other/random reboot causes the phone process to stop.
2. most (large) apps can not be downloaded fully from google play; the media process stops. trying to clear/stop download managers etc. do not help.
3. videos of the same bitrate/size play slower in mx player as compared to v1.6.
could any of the above issues because i used a larger system partition? i know the cache partition isnt used by the OS. df shows that i have a 250M /system and 115M /sd-ext (with 103M used after clean boot). is this always set at the same size?
if this is actually causing the problem (at least for points 1 & 2); does the remaining size after the system partition get split between data and sd-ext? if so is there any way to increase the sd-ext partition and leave the data partition small as ill be mounting it from sd card anyway?
also, does CWR actually delete the dalvik-cache if using a mounted /data directory from the sd card and not from the nand?
after reading the 40ad2sdx init script that is installed. it renames the nand data partition to sd-ext and mounts the extra partition on the sd card as the new data dir. inside the sd-ext dir it copies back from the new data dir; android system apps and leaves the rest.
i see that this rom makes mention of not needing the cache partition or swap as it uses /dev/block/mtdblock5. which would otherwise be the nand data dir or sd-ext if using 40ad2sdx.
im guessing its either because of an swap as file on this partition or apps that live in and use /dev/block/mtdblock5 for temp writing - is what causes processes to stop (ie. as a result of no more virtual memory or temp write space in the directory where they are launched).
i have since upgraded to v2.1 and reverted back to using a 165mb system partition and 5mb cache partition. which leaves a 240mb /dev/block/mtdblock5.
after using 40ad2sdx, the android apps (?and also swap as file?) take up 108mb; leaving 131mb (im guessing) for temp write space; eg. downloading apps from play.
so far i have no more issues regarding points 1 & 2.
can anyone clear up how the process for swap works with this rom? if it was mostly swap to blame, would have mounting a swap partition have solved the problem in the first place? how exactly does this rom use cache/swap on /dev/block/mtdblock5? is there some general method for some/all apps to offload cache data on android and its an actual growing cache directory and not and actual swap as file? when upgrading to v2.1 i created a swap partition anyway, would there be any benefit if i was to swapon this?
re: point 3.
this has not changed. videos of same bitrate still play slower. i also forgot to mention that apps like (guitar) solo lie, real drums and piano perfect also play slower (and are more or less now unplayable, unlike v1.6 where they played fine). i was assume this has something to do with the HWA, has this caused some problem with audio processing?
Did you flash v2.1 with fresh install? (Task29 etc.)
Check my installation here (I have no issues).
Could you tell us a parameters of your memory card? We also have seen that one HD2 can behave different than another
NexusHD2 is not using SWAP partition, so creating it has no point. Maybe you should use a smaller partition size if you have enough space. I used 512MB and i still have 200MB free after install all my apps. Rest of files storing on FAT32.
Oh, and try to format your card with SDFormatter (google it) - 1024Kb allocation size, then partition in CWM.

i am only having issues with point 3. ie. app solo performs slowly as compared to using v1.6 of this rom. and videos of (high) same bitrate now play slower. have you tested a high bitrate video that played on v1.6 and compared it to how it plays on v2.0 or v2.1 since HWA? or noticed sound processing delays when using apps like solo?
also you flash the adreno drivers. why? arent they included in the rom? if you did still with no issues, what was your method?

its 16gb, i dont know what class it is. it came with the phone. i got this phone from a friend unopened a few months ago. but please remember, the problems i report in point 3. did not exist using the same card when using v1.6 rom.

its been a while since i compiled a kernel, but if it is a flag that needs to be switched in the build, i cant see it taking up that much extra space in the image. is there any reason why there is no support for swap? again i still do not understand the manner in how this rom uses /dev/block/mtdblock5 swap/cache or if there is any benefit to using a swap partition that will ultimately reside on the sd card anyway (which is why im guessing there is swap as file within /dev/block/mtdblock5) but i have seen other roms mention support for swap.

you used a 512MB system partition? i guess you have the 1gig t-mobile. i have the 9193 telstra half gig phone; as i said recently, i am now using the minimal 165mb system partition; or do you mean some other partition, and why smaller?

Unfortunately I have no comparison with v1.6 because I`m using NexusHD2 ICS since v2.0. I didn`t notice any delays in playback.

From what I know, drivers were released several days later than the ROM

So that is strange. It must be something deeper.

I`m sorry. It's just a misunderstanding. I have HD2 EU. I meant 512MB EXT4 partition on SD Card. But now I don`t know if this has anything to do with your problem...
Maybe someone else will find a solution for your problem. I will try to think more about it.

well the only way to compare high bite rate videos is to install the older rom. not that i think thats worth the effort. have you tried the (guitar) Solo app? and noticed that it lags behind after a few strums?

well i guess i dont think i have any major problems. problems 1 & 2 are solved. no longer being able to use the musical apps because of sound processing issues is annoying but not the end of the world; i have seen a few posts in the official thread about sound issues, nothing as specific with any real case example like ive posted here however.
maybe if i get the chance to try the adreno drivers and flash the new kernel i can report back. i just havent made time nor jumped into doing so because they dont make mention of addressing any sound issues. *fingers crossed*
most of the videos i have play fine, i kept a few high bitrate videos on the card for testing purposes between rom versions which is why i mentioned it. i only started at rom v1.5. since moving to v2.0 some that used to play fine obviously no longer do so.
thanks alot for your feedback and help anyway mate
