Damn! That sucks!

Bummer! I've actually dropped mine once so far as well, which is unusual since I have an iron grip. Of all the phones I've had in the last 10 years this is probably my 4th drp. I blame the slippery plastic.

yeah it is very slippery and i order the case too it was commin in on monday

At least we know now, that Gorilla Glass shatters as well

Oh! How horrible! I can't believe you would show something like that on a public site! There could be children watching!
My sympathies. I can't own a smartphone without insurance either, and for those of us who torture their smartphones like myself, it's worth every penny.
What's the deductible?

wouldn't it be easier to just replace the glass? I imagine it's cheaper than the deductible. ifixit did a tear down of the atrix and the glass is not affixed to the screen like the iphones, so all you'd need to do is get a new glass and slap that on, then put the phone back together.

well.... at least this proves that the face actually IS glass. Far too many times i've found myself flicking the front of the phone and thought "...... this don't feel like glass".
And no offense.... but total Fail for quoting that rapper. Can't think of his name.... all i know is that he sucks.

eeeeh..... i think even that's debatable. I kinda think he lost all credibility with his last performance at the Grammy's last year.... when he performed that song which you quoted. HORRIBLE! If you have to rely solely on autotune, you shouldn't be a musician. That also kinda goes for the Black Eyed Peas.....

Following that logic, most rock, alternative, and hardcore music denies their artists as being musicians because they turn distortion on on their amps.
Hmm ......

Insurance is the best $5 a month you can spend. Very smart move on your part. My wife dropped her 3 month old Evo in a puddle. After soaking it in rice for a few days it still works, but the screen has a purple tint sometimes.

If you ask me... for the most part they're quite similar. Now... i'm not saying it's like GANSTER rap or any of that crap..... but still.
Flac Vest: There's a big difference between some artists using a bit of distortion..... and something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAkSp11c7m4
There are plenty of other artists i'd rather listen to day in and day out.... namely Kerli. Absoutely fantastic voice whether it's live or album track. Kinda like this one for a live example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDpOfeZXw1o&feature=related
Can also find a video on Youtube of her singing that very song on a webcam to a sick fan.... and she still sounds quite good even though she's not really pushing her voice much.
As for the OP.... any word on replacement/repair?

@Elemental: I stand corrected. Good God.

I love that this conversation is even possible here.

This is why I got a otterbox case. No matter how careful I am with my phone I know accidents happen.

Anyone else not been able to use this phone because of its ergonomics

I had a GS II but had to get rid of it because it caused me so much hand pain. I should declare that I do have existing problems with my hands but the Arc doesn't really cause me any problems. I think it was a combination of its width and the squareness of the design that did for me. I have tried out the Sensation and though that is only a bit narrower it seemed much easier on my hands, I reckon because it's a more rounded design.
I thought it was a good device but I am not going to keep using a phone that caused me that much constant pain.
First one i have come across though as it is larger i did recommend a young lady to hold it before buying .http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

It is a good device, just not for you. If you knew you had problems with your hand you should have spent more time with the phone before you bought it. It's like buying a car you never sat in and complaining about the driving position.
how exactly did it cause pain??? how can holding a phone hurt? there are things that are just beyond my comprehension.
Nope, i have a mans hand.
For me the phone is too slim and slippery, but silicone cover did the trick and it steadily fits my hand no problem.
I don't have too big hands but no problems with using it.

Maybe he has some injury or nerve damage so due to the width of the phone his hands hurt because of the shape they make holding the device?

So have I. Which makes me think it's more the design than the size. The Arc isn't that much smaller but is narrower and a much better thought out ergonomic design IMO.
By the way I should have said I have a form of nerve issue with both hands.
Well it's quite big, so it's hard to use one handed. I have really girlish hands though.

Hehe I'm not saying that there's something wrong with the phone, but I can't reach the top left side of the screen one handed and barely reach the middle left side. That being said I wouldn't change that beautiful big screen for anything, so I can live with.

It's a fraction too wide for me, but I can live with it just. I've suffered from a bit of RSI in the past so I can imagine how it might hurt if you have similar issues (carpal tunnel etc).
The SE Arc next to this feels much nicer in the hand as it's about 5-8mm narrower - yet still sports a 4.2" display. Maybe that would suit better.

I was visiting India for a couple of weeks on business and I noticed a live one sitting on my neighborhood cell phone store! Asked to see it, naturally! Frigging huge! Holy **** almost the size of my nook color! How is someone supposed to talk with this???? It's 34k rupees here, almost 660$... Pretty cheap Imo. So I'm guessing you spend more time talking on your captivate than actually using it as a smart phone.
I don't spend more than 10 minutes on the phone when outside so having the big phone to my face is no big deal. If you plan on talking for a long time that's what bluetooth, speakerphone, and headsets are for. Browsing the web, watching video, and gaming is what I mainly use my Note and previous smartphones for...this phone overly satisfies what I look for in a phone.
Is this a troll thread? Obviously we speak via telepathy on our Galaxy Note DUH.
Got my Note about a week ago, absolutely amazing, has been the envy of just about every other smartphone owner in my office. (particularly the people who just forked out ~$800 for a 4GS, when i tell them i got the note for $730 delivered)
few people gripe about it being too big. imo, if it fits in your pocket, it's just right!
as I jot down things on post-its constantly this is PERFECT, my desk and monitor are no longer covered in yellow squares.
I do miss the trackball from my HTC desire tho.. but otherwise this is better in almost every respect. (still think the Stock Samsung Icon set looks cheap and nasty tho)
Rooting and installing CWM was a peice of cake, looking forward to some quality custom roms to hit this very robust device

Okay... Still in India.. Saw a live gs2 today... Man, USA is really far behind in having live displays around! Dummies everywhere! First time I saw a live gs2, even though it has been out for 6 months.. Man that things is freakishly fast, my captivate looked like a freaking kid.... Didn't notice a whole lot of difference in the displays though, point to be noted here is that I use voodoo color. My girlfriend actually said my captivate looked better, at full brightness n same galaxy lwp. I laughed, of course... Lol!
But man o man.. That 720p display looks sweet on the note, imagine how great it would look on a screen of 4.6".. Plus a manageable form factor.... Nexus here I come!

Can't say I'm disappointed that it is plastic and not metal. He seemed to drone on about the plastic design. Sure plastic shells can scratch easily, but they stand up better over time than metal ones. I've had several devices metal and plastic, and metal always interferes with signal quality and when it bends, it doesn't bend back into place like plastic does. My TF201 looks terrible with all of its dents and scratches but my Evo 3D with its plastic back and only a little bit of metal around the edge is looking decent (except for the metal which is scratched and nicked.)
What is everyone's deal about plastic? A ceramic coating would have been interesting, but we have already seen the coating chipping off on one model of the HTC One series phones.
EDIT: Ok, so I see I wasn't the only person that found the way he complained about the keys and other nitpicking to be a bit biased and annoying.

I sent my 3d htc one s back for a refund and preordered the SGS3 for that reason alone!!
By the way, flimsy plastic? So what? You scratch it and buy a new one, the phone looks like new.
try to do that with an alloy-ceramic phone.... No chance!

I'd have loved it to be HTC Sensation-style,where you can replace the whole housing apart from the screen in the form of a battery cover. That way you just don't give a rat's ass about scratches etc.
Very annoying. Love the phone. Plastic back is better for radio signal. Drop a plastic backed phone and you will get back a scratched but still very much working phone not like a glass backed device. Very easy to tell an I-Phone fan boy. Could not watch or listen to entire video due to the annoying Fan Boy.

HTC One Black Scuffs

Can anyone with the HTC One in black confirm that it does not scuff like the paint on the iPhone 5? I currently have an iPhone 5 and it will suck to go to another phone that is painted black.
Not seen anyone with a black HTC One yet on these forums but if they exist I am sure they will let you know.
There is a short video on YouTube that answers this. I can't post links as I am a noob here but if you search for 'HTC One Anti Scratch' you should find it.

Black is not released yet but we have been assured it is anodised. The iPhone5 was a joke arriving with chips in the paintwork out of the box! While it is VERY hard to produce things perfectly and there may be a slight flaw somewhere on the phone, some of the iPhone 5s were shocking.

FWIW - I have been using an iPhone 5 since launch day without a single scratch on it (no case or protector). I do however treat my phone considerably better than most. It has never been dropped and is always set down on something soft, never on hard surfaces.
Again, it all depends on how you treat the phone. Under the right conditions, I'm sure the HTC One will scratch as well. Hopefully not as easily as the iPhone though.

Thanks for the video. And that's okay, I don't mind a scratch here and there as my iPhone has scratches as well. But what really concerns me is CNET.co.uk's review of the HTC One Black where they mention the HTC One is actually painted, not black anodized metal, so it chips even faster than an iPhone 5. That in itself is concerning.
I really want a beautiful Android phone like this one, but unfortunately there are some things that are starting to turn me off, like the buttons that are too pushed in with the phone and the IR blaster being on the left, as well as the 2,300maH battery which would've been great for yesteryear but no so much to today's standards.
It's so hard to find a beautiful phone that performs like you want it and has top of the line specifications. I had the HTC One X and had to return it due to manufacturing defects and other problems with Sense (goddamn I hate Sense).
Sorry about that rant, just wanted to know about the black scuffs as that would be a dealbreaker for me.
Cnet.co.uk review got it wrong, it's not painted. It's anodized for sure.
Op, can you change the topic to: .... does not scuff?

We are told that the Black one is anodized, but as nobody has a black one yet, we don't know for sure. It will be April before anyone has one I understand.

While I'm not trying to start a war here, because I don't know this stuff as well as some others, I do know that the iPhone is anodized.
A large part of an anodizing process (and it's overall resistance against scuffs/scratches) comes down to the type of metal and its hardness (tempered vs. non-tempered) along with depth, dye, and the finishing process itself. Anodizing is quite a bit different than just spraying some paint on something and moving along - however, it does have the ability to chip/scuff almost just as easily (depending on the process and materials used).

Lol - same here. My friends think I'm crazy when I grab a napkin at the bar before putting my phone down. :victory:

this guy doesn't understand what anodized means...
"Now, after using the phone for more than a week, I can say it’s surely one of the best phones out there, if not the best. It’s got issues, for example, with the pretty finish chipping off, but I’m been very impressed in other areas like battery life and camera."
this is from one of the reviews. do not trust the video on youtube.
Don't forget the guy in that review clearly states he DID put the one and his keys in the same pockets for a week to get these dents.

but to be fair, you do carry other stuff in your pocket..
within a week is a poor result to be honest.
Silver is the way to go

I don't. Never did, and the time I went to a show and put my SII in a zippered pocket I got nasty scuffs, when the taking out.
But the pocket with the phone, is always the phone alone...

I used to think the same but ever since i got my brand new Alienware Laptop, Beats, Ipad and Digital Camera stolen and insurance didnt pay out jack, any gadget damage seems to pale in comparison. For some reason I always think back to that now - Adam
Id still be pretty gutted though haha.
FAIL.
I've dropped the M8 so many times... But this

Really guys? This is just based on chance, not an indication of how well your phone handles drops. You could just as well drop it ten times and not hit the display.
If you drop any phone, with no case, like that from that height it's not going to survive intact.

Yep definately, no phone would have survived that! Hell a lot of phones wouldn't have survived the side drop either.
The HTC one is one of the most durable highend phones out there - Adam
Just place a Spigen or other brand Glass screenprotector. If your phone falls, the glass screen protector will be broken, when you remove that, your phone display is 100% OK
