If you can't tell by his long rant on the location of the keys, he is a well known samsung hate/iphone fanboy. You can literally tell whether the article was written by him based on the first paragraph.
However, i'm quite surprised that he actually liked the device

Yep, he sound super annoying though and I'm not referring to his accent but the tone of his voice, I can't watch 26 min of him so I usually skip to the parts that I'm interested about like browser, screen, battery life. But I think overall he always gives an honest opinion.

the device dosent shows any sign of pebble blue in the whole video and no symptoms of brushed finish too!! nice...

Can't say I'm disappointed that it is plastic and not metal. He seemed to drone on about the plastic design. Sure plastic shells can scratch easily, but they stand up better over time than metal ones. I've had several devices metal and plastic, and metal always interferes with signal quality and when it bends, it doesn't bend back into place like plastic does. My TF201 looks terrible with all of its dents and scratches but my Evo 3D with its plastic back and only a little bit of metal around the edge is looking decent (except for the metal which is scratched and nicked.)
What is everyone's deal about plastic? A ceramic coating would have been interesting, but we have already seen the coating chipping off on one model of the HTC One series phones.
EDIT: Ok, so I see I wasn't the only person that found the way he complained about the keys and other nitpicking to be a bit biased and annoying.

It's good to be ambidex ^_^

Yeah this guy is rearly a hardcore Iphone fanboy, I dont like his reviews and tests cause he is not objective at all. He was trying rearly hard to find something to criticize on and than mention that every minute, he seems very annoyed that this device is better than the Iphone...

stay away from ceramic coating!!! good thing Samsung didnt go there.
I sent my 3d htc one s back for a refund and preordered the SGS3 for that reason alone!!
By the way, flimsy plastic? So what? You scratch it and buy a new one, the phone looks like new.
try to do that with an alloy-ceramic phone.... No chance!

Well,PhoneArena's reviews are really good,as long as you don't watch the videos.
Although...iPhone smooth?Nowadays the iPhone is Android smooth. With ICS my Desire HD is smoother than the iPhone 4 of a friend and rivals the 4S.My S2 rapes them both.

I'd have loved it to be HTC Sensation-style,where you can replace the whole housing apart from the screen in the form of a battery cover. That way you just don't give a rat's ass about scratches etc.

Very annoying. Love the phone. Plastic back is better for radio signal. Drop a plastic backed phone and you will get back a scratched but still very much working phone not like a glass backed device. Very easy to tell an I-Phone fan boy. Could not watch or listen to entire video due to the annoying Fan Boy.

Build Quality

HI all
I was wandering how is the build quality in this phone?
I would love to give it to my girlfriend but was just wandering after hearing/reading some negative comments about galaxy s 1 build.
Thank you in advance for any comments, or links to articles or such.
Regards
Kirior
I think it's awesome. Even it's plastic, it's really assertive and the back cover stays so tight. Just the opening is a bit tricky... But you only need to do this once, luckily. If you need to change sim-cards or memory cards daily, then I don't recommend this phone.
Samsung isn't known as "Samsuck" for no reason. Buy her an HTC phone. I would steer clear of any Samsung phones.

stop trolling, it's pretty good even though its plastic it feels solid
Its fine really, solid despite the choice of materials, feels a lot better in the hand than the original.

To try and add some value to an otherwise useless post, I haven't owned a Samsung phone since the CDMA i730 Windows phone. It was a funky phone without a lot of joy and some really questionable design choices. From there I had a succession of HTC phones spanning six years. They were all solid, ran well, and gave me little to complain about. I got an LG phone which I kept for a whopping three weeks before realizing it was a pile of rubbish. So, with an unbiased view, I chose the Samsuck GS2 and couldn't be happier. Back on topic, the build quality is great. Fit, finish, style, feel are all what you'd expect from a high-end device. Alas, because it's shiny parts are exposed front and back, all that beauty has to be hidden by a case which makes it look pedestrian. I just got my Case-Mate tough case today and the phone now looks mummified. Oh well, at least it's protected.
I really dont understand the questions about build quality the sgs or sgs2. My orignal sgs(vibrant) was heavy duty. Yes its light and yes its made out of plastic. But ive dropped my vibrant from various heights and the battery cover never popped off, no marks on screen or anything. Both phones, specially the sgs2 feel like a lighter, thinner HD2. Niether feels flimsy, cheap, breakable.
One of the Hd2s ive owned fell from bathroom sink to tile floor, and shattered after a 3 -4foot drop.
Build Quality is important to me as I work with dogs(90%) and other various animals. Besides the psycho owners, I deal with psycho 200pound dogs on a daily basis. I get bumped, biten, jumped on, rubbed, attacked etc all day, everyday. Not a single scratch, scrap, dent on the sgs2 and thats with no protection for 3 weeks.
Now the only bad quality choice samsung and other manufactors use is the damn cheap silver/chrome/aluminum bezel around the phones. Since I dont use cases consistently im prone to scratch the bezel by the end of ownership.
Another plus is the couple cases I do have dont add extra bulk like other phones. Im waiting on quality extended batteries to come.
HI guys
Thx for all replies, all in all i have bought SGS2 for her. She is in heavens now i guess that's all that matters and she does take care of the phones so i know i will not land on the floor or such just wanted to make sure.
thanks again and for me the thread is closed.

I find the build quality of the S2 pretty decent although I had my doubts when I just got the phone. After using it for a couple of weeks I think the build quality is fine and I'm sure this phone will last a long time.
However, today I had the HTC Sensation in my hands for the first time and I must confess that the build quality of the Sensaion is clearly better.
The build quality is much better than i expected. Yes, it is plastic, but feels pretty solid, no creaking or flex. I have an SE Arc also, similar thickness, but would say that the gs2 is easily the more high quality build of the two.
Regarding the battery cover, it is thin and flimsy, but i cant imagine a new one costing much if you needed one. What bothers me more is the texture, it feels more slick than a shiny back, but a case might fix that.

About that replaceable plastic (Sammy) vs unibody (HTC) thing...

First of all I have to say, the Samsung Galaxy S3 looks veeeery good to me.
You want to know why?
1. Unique design, more curvy which definately will give you a better feeling when holding the phone in your hand. Just look at your palm, is it completely flat? I don't think so. Therefore it's easier to hold a curvy S3 in your hand compared to an angular shaped S2. I really think the S3 looks better and gives you more comfort just by seeing the way it's designed.
2. Plastic, it's very sturdy and therefore less damage can happen when it's dropped e.g. to the floor. Drop an iPhone/HTC and get ready to call the service line.
3. Weight, plastic is the way to go if you want a thin and light phone. Some people here sound as if they would like a flipping phone made out of solid osmium (heaviest of all metals)
4. Replaceable components, seriously guys, UNIBODY MY ASS, I want to be able to replace the battery without having to send it to Samsung and wait for the service to fix it. On top of that Unibody doesn't allow you to buy a bigger battery for your phone (though I think the stock 2100 mAh already is good!)
And no SD Card slot like the HTC One X? LOL.
5. Sorry for my english
Those being just some arguments which definately make reasonable why Sammy doesn't choose as same path as HTC/Apple.
Fair points, but I'm still disappointed they went the high gloss route. IMO, if it was matt plastic it would be far more appealing.

It's the same reason why people that own german cars think they have a better quality material eventhough it's the same plastic used in other brands just in different texture
i find it amusing that people think samsung doesnt use metal. the screen is bonded to a cast frame presumably aluminum but maybe magnesium on all the phones i have repaired. remove the battery and scrape the black area underneath with a sharp metal object if you dont believe me. the plastic they use is not only tough and fracture resistant but it's pretty much superficial.
now im sure htc has improved their designs but the evo was toy like in construction. thin cheap plastics and the pcb was a thin single layer design and the copper traces could easily seperate from the board. also the one i repaired had cold solder joints and the spring contacts they used in place or cables were falling off the board.
samsung does things that are frustrating from a development point of view but i never agreed with the quality argument.
well i'm looking forward to the s3 for the audio mostly. but i want to see what challenges the hardware offers aosp development. though i like touch wiz i dont expect samsung to support the device for more than 1 or 2 major updates. i have learned my lesson and will only buy the us version if it is the same hardware profile as the international version. and ill only buy an s3 if the bt and other hardware are aosp friendly.

Yep replacement battery all the way!

The SIII IS actually polycarbonate! (confirmed)

Polycarbonate is used on the battery cover. Polycarbonate is lightweight, solid and is already being widely used in the mobile industry. It was chosen as the best material to represent the minimal organic design of GALAXY S III. Using three layers of high quality, pure and clear polycarbonate, not only is the phone’s aesthetic elevated, but the durability and scratch resistance is maximized.

Straight from Samsung's mouth!
This is great news!
Source: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Conf...xy-S-III-is-polycarbonate-not-plastic_id30304
Nice to hear. But you do realize that polycarbonate is just another kind of thermoplastic ploymer (read: plastic). It's got some unique properties that make it particularly suitable for a mobile phone's casing and so it's indeed good news for us prospective SGS3 owners. But however we put it, it's still plastic - which is not necessarily a bad thing. The One X is plastic too... and it's just the material thickness and surface processing that is different from the SGS3 - matte versus gloss (or hyperglazed as Samsung calls it).
This is from Wikipedia:
Polycarbonates received their name because they are polymers containing carbonate groups (–O–(C=O)–O–). Most polycarbonates of commercial interest are derived from rigid monomers. A balance of useful features including temperature resistance, impact resistance and optical properties position polycarbonates between commodity plastics and engineering plastics.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycarbonate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic_identification_code#Plastic_identification_code
They're grouped under Plastics as a material - As category 7 (Others)
So it's all plastic - both the OneX and the SGS3... just with a fancy name (and two different surface treatments) and I think that's the best choice of material for a 4.5+ inch phone to keep the chassis lightweight, flexible and durable, while also avoiding havoc with the various internal antennas that a mobile phone contains (as opposed to the so called premium aluminium).
I'm very happy it is what it is... and looking forward to playing around with one soon. Happy shopping everyone!!
I'm well aware that it's a type of plastic, but now we're just into silly semantics.
Gorilla Glass is also a type of glass.

Can't argue with you there mate!
I wasn't trying to shoot down what you said pal... in fact I agree with you. What I was trying to get across was that I'm glad it's polycarbonate. Shuts the OneX fanboys up - it's not something exclusive HTC cooked up in its basement (unlike the now infamous Micro Arc Oxidation process), and is a very good choice of material as compared to conventional plastic. Obviously my communication skills need some work.

I'm not quite sure where you heard it, but I've been following every morsel of information on the S3, including the rumors for the past year. I watched the Unboxing event from start to finish when it was officially announced. I've watched and read every review in the last couple weeks. I've had mine on pre-order as soon as I was able to.
Hell, even a quote from the source that I just linked reads:

Have to say that today is the first time that i've come across this information myself... wasn't common knowledge so far. This was actually one of the major bone of contention with the HOX users who felt that it was exclusive to HTC's flagship. So as far as i'm concerned, it's new info, and certainly good news.
Great news, but also rather expected
I have had the SGS 2 since it was launched in May 2011 in Denmark, and nothing has broken yet. The "flimsy" back of the phone is in mint condition after a freaking lot of battery changes. So it is hardly as flimsy as it may feel to reviewers when it's not on the phone. A part from some tear on the hump, and a scratch on one of the corners from one of the times I dropped it on concrete, there is nothing to see. It almost looks brand new.
I thought everyone knew that the sgs3 and HOX both used polycarbonate? The only difference being the sgs3 is glossy whereas the HOX has a matt finish. I mean, what did you all think it was? cheapo acrylic?
Having dropped the S2 and the note hardcore on concrete and asphalt multiple times, i can definitely confirm the quality of the said plastic
After reading S3 is made of polycarbonate I took closer look and you know what it actually looks the exact bloody same!! that is cheap plastic look, just what i wanted for my £500.
Consumers are so dumb (no offence ofcourse).
Polycarbonate is Plastic, we, the consumers just like fancy words like Polycarbonate and we're sold on the product...
If this was Apple you know they'd have called it HyperReal3DPlastic or some such nonsense and the whole tech world would have gone mad over yet another Apple 'invention', and people would be complaining why other phones aren't as good.

Hyperglaze is just a clear top coat of plastic over the color coat. This helps with fingerprints and gives it a more liquid look.
After owning two Samsung phones s2 and now gn I can say having plastic is better. When I had my ip4 I was always scared to drop it chip it scratch it.

HTC One Black Scuffs

Can anyone with the HTC One in black confirm that it does not scuff like the paint on the iPhone 5? I currently have an iPhone 5 and it will suck to go to another phone that is painted black.
Not seen anyone with a black HTC One yet on these forums but if they exist I am sure they will let you know.
There is a short video on YouTube that answers this. I can't post links as I am a noob here but if you search for 'HTC One Anti Scratch' you should find it.

Black is not released yet but we have been assured it is anodised. The iPhone5 was a joke arriving with chips in the paintwork out of the box! While it is VERY hard to produce things perfectly and there may be a slight flaw somewhere on the phone, some of the iPhone 5s were shocking.

FWIW - I have been using an iPhone 5 since launch day without a single scratch on it (no case or protector). I do however treat my phone considerably better than most. It has never been dropped and is always set down on something soft, never on hard surfaces.
Again, it all depends on how you treat the phone. Under the right conditions, I'm sure the HTC One will scratch as well. Hopefully not as easily as the iPhone though.

Lol - same here. My friends think I'm crazy when I grab a napkin at the bar before putting my phone down. :victory:
Bunch of crazy people here

This is the video Scootmien was talking about.

Thanks for the video. And that's okay, I don't mind a scratch here and there as my iPhone has scratches as well. But what really concerns me is CNET.co.uk's review of the HTC One Black where they mention the HTC One is actually painted, not black anodized metal, so it chips even faster than an iPhone 5. That in itself is concerning.
I really want a beautiful Android phone like this one, but unfortunately there are some things that are starting to turn me off, like the buttons that are too pushed in with the phone and the IR blaster being on the left, as well as the 2,300maH battery which would've been great for yesteryear but no so much to today's standards.
It's so hard to find a beautiful phone that performs like you want it and has top of the line specifications. I had the HTC One X and had to return it due to manufacturing defects and other problems with Sense (goddamn I hate Sense).
Sorry about that rant, just wanted to know about the black scuffs as that would be a dealbreaker for me.
Cnet.co.uk review got it wrong, it's not painted. It's anodized for sure.
Op, can you change the topic to: .... does not scuff?

iPhone 5 is painted or it would not do this

We are told that the Black one is anodized, but as nobody has a black one yet, we don't know for sure. It will be April before anyone has one I understand.

While I'm not trying to start a war here, because I don't know this stuff as well as some others, I do know that the iPhone is anodized.
A large part of an anodizing process (and it's overall resistance against scuffs/scratches) comes down to the type of metal and its hardness (tempered vs. non-tempered) along with depth, dye, and the finishing process itself. Anodizing is quite a bit different than just spraying some paint on something and moving along - however, it does have the ability to chip/scuff almost just as easily (depending on the process and materials used).

this guy doesn't understand what anodized means...
"Now, after using the phone for more than a week, I can say it’s surely one of the best phones out there, if not the best. It’s got issues, for example, with the pretty finish chipping off, but I’m been very impressed in other areas like battery life and camera."
this is from one of the reviews. do not trust the video on youtube.
Don't forget the guy in that review clearly states he DID put the one and his keys in the same pockets for a week to get these dents.

but to be fair, you do carry other stuff in your pocket..
within a week is a poor result to be honest.
Silver is the way to go
to be fair i make a point of never putting anything in a pocket that my phone is in.

I don't. Never did, and the time I went to a show and put my SII in a zippered pocket I got nasty scuffs, when the taking out.
But the pocket with the phone, is always the phone alone...

Best phone I've had!

I recently purchased the Galaxy S5 and I have to say, it's one of the best phones I have had. I am yet to have any problems with it and it's just perfect for my everyday use!
Has anyone else got it? What are your thoughts?
Same here dude! There's so much hate going on about it online but honestly it makes no sense when this is definitely better than other galaxy phones all around and it's just a beautiful device. Just because its made with plastic shouldn't make it "bad". Glad I'm not alone!

Tell me about it. It doesn't deserve this much hate just because of the material it's made of. Why don't people base it off the actual phone and not the material.

Because people are all about looks/aesthetics these days, that's why.... either way I wrap my baby up in a case, so ven if I had an M8 you wouldn't be able to see the "premium, beautiful metal build". FYI I prefer the plastic, doesn't dent or scratch nearly as easy as metal, and less weight, so when/if it does fall, it gets less damage!
my fav was the note 2... but this phone is great the m8 was long for no reason didnt feel good in the hand and was heavy
soon as i got the 5 out the box it felt way better before even turning it on

I agree with you guys. I think it feels great in the hand. It had me at screen on.

yep, its great
the hate is all about because samsung is getting complacent and not changing up the phone exterior.....i mean..it essentially looks like a S4
what i don't like about it is that i think samsung is mass producing too quickly and a lot of phones have random issues here and there like scratched bezels, crooked stuff, mushy home buttons, etc...the QA went downhill
I'm happy with it!
I've never had a problem with touchwiz. This one is more user friendly and maybe more designed for the casual user but I do find things easier now.
The battery life is better than my S3 but all phones seem to start out with battery life being good for the first year then it goes down.
I haven't taken many pictures but I'm not real happy with the camera.

really? compared to my old s2, s3, and s4, the low light photos are PHENOMENAL!!
are you turning on the picture stabilization in low light or HDR? that is the key to good low light photos

I actually liked the handling of the S4 (might be one of the few who actually did lol!)
I actually have to, but I agree about the bezel. Even tho I really like the look of the S4's bezel, the one of the S5 is pretty horrible lol. I really dont like it at all. But, that alone wouldn't persuade me from getting it.
I'll also admit that the white one feels extremely slippery on the back. Besides using an OtterBox for work every day, I'm not a huge case guy. Soon as i T home each day, I take the Defender off and slip on the Spigen bumper case that I got. Phone almost slipped outta my hands quite a few times already.
Orhan than that, I got no regrets. Very well rounded device. Surely won me over once again compared to HtC

Ya, the white one comes with a more plasticy back versus black is more rubberized

I don't get how this phone has too big of a bezel. I feel like if it were any smaller id be hitting the screen too much. I'm used to a bezel coming from EVO devices so I may be a bit ignorant about it.

Probably the speed of focusing and taking the picture. Trying to get my kids at doing something funny before they have left the room by the time the picture decides to take. I have stabilization turned off.
Outside it bright conditions it takes right away.

The camera is pretty good for a PHONE. Your expectations might be a little high. I mean its hard to get a pic of my kids playing even with my high end cam so to expect this cam to do it is silly

Yes, I agree. I just generally think people are way too picky nowadays and want perfection when it comes to phones. I'm like you, I prefer plastic.

The fact that it doesn't do simultaneous voice and data definitely makes it NOT the best phone!
