Anyone else not been able to use this phone because of its ergonomics - Galaxy S II General

I had a GS II but had to get rid of it because it caused me so much hand pain. I should declare that I do have existing problems with my hands but the Arc doesn't really cause me any problems. I think it was a combination of its width and the squareness of the design that did for me. I have tried out the Sensation and though that is only a bit narrower it seemed much easier on my hands, I reckon because it's a more rounded design.
I thought it was a good device but I am not going to keep using a phone that caused me that much constant pain.

First one i have come across though as it is larger i did recommend a young lady to hold it before buying .http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

It is a good device, just not for you. If you knew you had problems with your hand you should have spent more time with the phone before you bought it. It's like buying a car you never sat in and complaining about the driving position.

how exactly did it cause pain??? how can holding a phone hurt? there are things that are just beyond my comprehension.

Nope, i have a mans hand.

For me the phone is too slim and slippery, but silicone cover did the trick and it steadily fits my hand no problem.
I don't have too big hands but no problems with using it.

I did try before buying, obviously not for long enough it seems. This is only the second phone ever that I have had this much problem with the first was the N73.

Total utter 100% lefty, FWIW.

Maybe he has some injury or nerve damage so due to the width of the phone his hands hurt because of the shape they make holding the device?

So have I. Which makes me think it's more the design than the size. The Arc isn't that much smaller but is narrower and a much better thought out ergonomic design IMO.
By the way I should have said I have a form of nerve issue with both hands.

Well it's quite big, so it's hard to use one handed. I have really girlish hands though.

I have small hands. I had my plastic surgeon make an incision in my thenar space so I can open up the palm wide enough and hold the phone with one hand. I am now talking to that surgeon about transplanting one of my ears higher on my head.

Hehe I'm not saying that there's something wrong with the phone, but I can't reach the top left side of the screen one handed and barely reach the middle left side. That being said I wouldn't change that beautiful big screen for anything, so I can live with.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

It's a fraction too wide for me, but I can live with it just. I've suffered from a bit of RSI in the past so I can imagine how it might hurt if you have similar issues (carpal tunnel etc).
The SE Arc next to this feels much nicer in the hand as it's about 5-8mm narrower - yet still sports a 4.2" display. Maybe that would suit better.

you know what i hate?

that when my screen is closed and the keyboard is hidden, where ever i touch on the screen the screen and the entire top part of the phone moves when i touch the screen. its like my screen isnt tight. im not talking about the hindge opening, because obvioulsy what horse has been beaten to a pulp, but the screen itself. i apologize for the rant, but i just want to see if anyone else has the hate as well. only thing wrong with the phone!
I do not have this problem. You probably have a defective unit.
your screen isnt loose just a tad? i might just be over thinking it. i mean i just can feel the the screen just move a little when i type on it.
I too have never had this issue...you should take a look into that.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Just pushed on my screen MUCH harder than I would in normal use and it didn't so much as budge. Think you might have a bad device.
Yep me too,.... My hinge is definitely loose but there is no movement whatsoever when the device is shut.
Warranty!!!
Mine does that too. My wife's does not and my original one which I warrenteed already didn't either. But my replacement does.
The plastic casing must be slightly warped enough to misalign the little bumpers.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Yea I have this to, really annoying. I had one of those clip on cases on my phone for a while , it might have been that which made it loose.
It depends on which way you are holding it when you push on it, if you hold it perpendicular for example it has this issue.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Mine will rock sideways if you try (and if you're tapping around on screen you MIGHT feel the gap on the left side change), it's not all that much though - and the 3 G2s I've used were all like that.
yeah, thats what i mean. like the way the hinge was made, it doesnt quite sit the phone flat on the keyboard piece. im glad i see other peoples g2s have it as well and im not the only one. its mainly when the phone is in portrait and the top left part of the screen is touch it rocks just a tad.
My condolences to all who have these petty little problems..and i mean that..no sarcasm at all here...

Sarcasm noted...
For a phone with such great build quality/feel, something like the OP's problem (and mine) is fairly annoying. This feels like an executive class phone...for the first few weeks. It is a sweet phone/device. Too bad it's not perfect like my Vibrant, errr Nexus S, err.... Still waiting for the "perfect" phone.
lol
I was hanging out on Slickdeals and saw all the G2 love (yes, people really loved getting their phone free on cyber monday).. then a thread came up for the HTC shift.. and all the sprint guys were bashing it.
It's the same damn phone.
Still makes me laugh.
Best phone I have ever owned without a doubt, not a huge fan of the Z hinge but without it the keyboard wouldn't be so flush and ergonomic, its a small price to pay for superior user-friendliness
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I have to agree with all the DZ/G2 love here. It's a fantastic phone. Aside from VERY minor issues with the hinge tightness (though, there seems to be some 'hardware hackers' working on that! , this phone is as close to perfect as I can imagine. I *love* having a hardware keyboard, and it's waaay better than the G1. (Though a ctrl/alt key would be nice for ssh sessions!).

Phone accessory

Hi, Maybe this should be in the accessories section but I did it myself, It's not much and I know that so not criticism unless it is constructive please.
This isn't criticism.
What exactly is the advantage to having that "ring" (for lack of a better term) around just the face of the phone? It seems like it would be more useful around the back of the phone.

There is what is called "bumper cases" which are pretty much just a ring to protect the corners and make a small gap between the screen and the floor or any level horizontal surface so if you drop it, it will hopefully not break your phone screen or corners. This one fails a bit at the later but I imagine keeps the corners slightly protected.
Ok

I would LOVE an iPhone 5...if it ran Android

I hate Apple, and I always will. I will never buy from Apple or support it at all...but I really wish there where Android phones that had the same hardware quality as Apple. I love my Atrix, but squeeze it, it creaks. The back is flimsy, the camera lens scratches and its all soo plasticity, and a lot of Android phones are like this. All plastic, creaky, and over all compare to Apples phones, just horribly cheep feeling. I love Android an would never move to Apple, but I still would really love an Android phone that matched iPhone 4/4s or especially iPhone 5 quality. Just don't think it'll ever happen though, sadly.
That's why hardware-wise, Apple will always dominate in that category.
I don't care what anyone says otherwise. Take off your green colored glasses if you disagree.

If they dominate the category so much, why is it that 45%ish of iphones I see people with are cracked all to hell? Nokia, they continue to have arguably the best build quality in the industry. Counterpoint-- the only thing apple does that gives the impression that they have the ability to create a solid phone is that they only produce one product. Given that fact, they're phone should be much better in every area than it actually ever is.

No thanks, I don't want my nice looking phone to be hidden beneath some ugly case. I actually had a case on my Atrix once. Broke in 2 weeks. The Atrix itself has actually taken more damage that that case without much harm. I probably just had a bad case, though. It sure was ugly.
Atrix is actually a very nice compromise between aesthetics and tank phone. Part of the process when I pick a phone is how it looks and feels. A case changes that. Its not about looking cool or showing off. That implies I give a damn what others think.. I digress. Be ninja. Your phone is too important to drop, not to mention too damned expensive, but atrix can take it.
I've seen people holding cracked iPhones too.. usually they're also holding a joint and a skateboard. Or five things in each hand while simultaneously trying to make a call. can't blame that on apple fellas

There's a big difference between a completely shattered screen vs a small flake of paint coming off of my phone from a 4 foot drop. I had an iphone 3g that the screen was completely shattered and the back shell cracked from tripping over a rock and my iphone flung. Had the same thing happen with my atrix and just a lil paint came off (and my atrix bounced and hit the side of my house) neither had cases.... moral of the story drunk txting is bad
But yeah anyway, iphones dont have the best track record when it comes to hardware durability and I want to know where you're buying a screen shipped for $3 that's as good of quality as the origional... and to your comment about the iphone 4g, I've had a sales rep sit on his brand new iphone 4gs and it shattered his screen (again no case was on the phone). I've done that several times with my atrix and a nokia with no issues.

This is what I thought until I dropped the phone from chest hight onto a concrete car park floor. Gorilla glass is structurally very tough and flexible but doesn't like impact and will break along micro scratches caused by leaving your phone face down on any gritty surface. I just got a black tpu case that has a nice lip around the screen edges but is otherwise nice and discrete. I can use my lapdock fine as it fits perfectly with the connections after removing the plastic tray and it cost me around £2. I love not having a case but it's so damn hard locating good replacement digitizers for the atrix I would rather play it safe.
As for apple hardware, it does seem pretty good quality, the I phone 4/s had a really nice weight to it and I have no doubt that the new device will feel more solid than most devices on the marked (excluding the lumia devices ) how this relates to their ruggedness I'm not sure (putting a glass back on a phone really is stupid ) still I would love a sapphire crystal over my camera lense! Android manufacturers really do need to up the quality though, a phone goes with you everywhere and needs to be fairly rugged. Although the Atrix is pretty decent I do wish it was more solid.

Currently I am not flowing with cash, and I have an iPhone 3G - I saw the Atrix 4G 16GB unlocked on ebay for like 228 (I am in Brazil so hence the unlock) So is the Atrix 4G a good phone (better than my 3G?) Can it run ICS or Jellybean thru custom roms off course, and how is it's gaming power?

Me. It honestly depends what your intended use of a phone that is the final decision in this case. If you just want a phone that simply works, an IPhone is better, because its very limited in area to improve. Lots of restrictions, developer-wise.
If being able to improve performance in multiple aspects; Android all the way. What does the IPhone really offer when jailbroken? Tweaked themes? Sure, you can unlock it to be used on other carriers...but who wants just 3G?

HTC One Black Scuffs

Can anyone with the HTC One in black confirm that it does not scuff like the paint on the iPhone 5? I currently have an iPhone 5 and it will suck to go to another phone that is painted black.
Not seen anyone with a black HTC One yet on these forums but if they exist I am sure they will let you know.
There is a short video on YouTube that answers this. I can't post links as I am a noob here but if you search for 'HTC One Anti Scratch' you should find it.

Black is not released yet but we have been assured it is anodised. The iPhone5 was a joke arriving with chips in the paintwork out of the box! While it is VERY hard to produce things perfectly and there may be a slight flaw somewhere on the phone, some of the iPhone 5s were shocking.

FWIW - I have been using an iPhone 5 since launch day without a single scratch on it (no case or protector). I do however treat my phone considerably better than most. It has never been dropped and is always set down on something soft, never on hard surfaces.
Again, it all depends on how you treat the phone. Under the right conditions, I'm sure the HTC One will scratch as well. Hopefully not as easily as the iPhone though.

Thanks for the video. And that's okay, I don't mind a scratch here and there as my iPhone has scratches as well. But what really concerns me is CNET.co.uk's review of the HTC One Black where they mention the HTC One is actually painted, not black anodized metal, so it chips even faster than an iPhone 5. That in itself is concerning.
I really want a beautiful Android phone like this one, but unfortunately there are some things that are starting to turn me off, like the buttons that are too pushed in with the phone and the IR blaster being on the left, as well as the 2,300maH battery which would've been great for yesteryear but no so much to today's standards.
It's so hard to find a beautiful phone that performs like you want it and has top of the line specifications. I had the HTC One X and had to return it due to manufacturing defects and other problems with Sense (goddamn I hate Sense).
Sorry about that rant, just wanted to know about the black scuffs as that would be a dealbreaker for me.
Cnet.co.uk review got it wrong, it's not painted. It's anodized for sure.

While I'm not trying to start a war here, because I don't know this stuff as well as some others, I do know that the iPhone is anodized.
A large part of an anodizing process (and it's overall resistance against scuffs/scratches) comes down to the type of metal and its hardness (tempered vs. non-tempered) along with depth, dye, and the finishing process itself. Anodizing is quite a bit different than just spraying some paint on something and moving along - however, it does have the ability to chip/scuff almost just as easily (depending on the process and materials used).

Same here dude! There's so much hate going on about it online but honestly it makes no sense when this is definitely better than other galaxy phones all around and it's just a beautiful device. Just because its made with plastic shouldn't make it "bad". Glad I'm not alone!

Tell me about it. It doesn't deserve this much hate just because of the material it's made of. Why don't people base it off the actual phone and not the material.

Because people are all about looks/aesthetics these days, that's why.... either way I wrap my baby up in a case, so ven if I had an M8 you wouldn't be able to see the "premium, beautiful metal build". FYI I prefer the plastic, doesn't dent or scratch nearly as easy as metal, and less weight, so when/if it does fall, it gets less damage!
my fav was the note 2... but this phone is great the m8 was long for no reason didnt feel good in the hand and was heavy
soon as i got the 5 out the box it felt way better before even turning it on

yep, its great
the hate is all about because samsung is getting complacent and not changing up the phone exterior.....i mean..it essentially looks like a S4
what i don't like about it is that i think samsung is mass producing too quickly and a lot of phones have random issues here and there like scratched bezels, crooked stuff, mushy home buttons, etc...the QA went downhill
I'm happy with it!
I've never had a problem with touchwiz. This one is more user friendly and maybe more designed for the casual user but I do find things easier now.
The battery life is better than my S3 but all phones seem to start out with battery life being good for the first year then it goes down.
I haven't taken many pictures but I'm not real happy with the camera.

really? compared to my old s2, s3, and s4, the low light photos are PHENOMENAL!!
are you turning on the picture stabilization in low light or HDR? that is the key to good low light photos

I actually liked the handling of the S4 (might be one of the few who actually did lol!)
I actually have to, but I agree about the bezel. Even tho I really like the look of the S4's bezel, the one of the S5 is pretty horrible lol. I really dont like it at all. But, that alone wouldn't persuade me from getting it.
I'll also admit that the white one feels extremely slippery on the back. Besides using an OtterBox for work every day, I'm not a huge case guy. Soon as i T home each day, I take the Defender off and slip on the Spigen bumper case that I got. Phone almost slipped outta my hands quite a few times already.
Orhan than that, I got no regrets. Very well rounded device. Surely won me over once again compared to HtC

Ya, the white one comes with a more plasticy back versus black is more rubberized

I don't get how this phone has too big of a bezel. I feel like if it were any smaller id be hitting the screen too much. I'm used to a bezel coming from EVO devices so I may be a bit ignorant about it.

Probably the speed of focusing and taking the picture. Trying to get my kids at doing something funny before they have left the room by the time the picture decides to take. I have stabilization turned off.
Outside it bright conditions it takes right away.

The camera is pretty good for a PHONE. Your expectations might be a little high. I mean its hard to get a pic of my kids playing even with my high end cam so to expect this cam to do it is silly

Yes, I agree. I just generally think people are way too picky nowadays and want perfection when it comes to phones. I'm like you, I prefer plastic.

The fact that it doesn't do simultaneous voice and data definitely makes it NOT the best phone!
