I'm connecting to Wi-Fi just fine. I've connected to over 6 Wi-Fi spots with no problems. Check with another device the network first.

could you get on with your previous phone?
I know my universities network required special certificates, and getting a mobile device on required a trip to the helpdesk to specially add it.

I had an Iphone 4 and a mac which connect fine.
The thing is after I put all the username and password in and click on the network name, the Wifi change to connecting and then disconnected...

We can't answer your questions because you didn't give any specifics about the wireless network you're trying to connect to. Is is WPA? WPA2? PEAP? Do they have their own cert CA or do they use someone Motorola already trusts in their keychain?
It's probably better that you ask your network services dept or browse their website than ask here, especially without any details.

I'm trying my best to remember what my school did (graduated almost 2 years ago), and i seem to remember them just putting in a blanket exception for iphones due to not being able to add them normally. Other phones still had to go through the same security exception stuff. Might be worth a trip to your school's helpdesk and just asking. That is what they're there for anyway.

wifi on hero worked perfectly for me. The problem must be unique to your phone/config.
If you try to go to an Orange bookmarked site then it errors - these are the free pages on Orange, which rely on an Orange connection.
Other than that I can browse the web over WiFi just fine.
Vince
Cheers, will factory reboot tonightand try again.

Yes I noticed that. Pretty sloppy from Orange that. There should be a 'what if' type proxy situation for wifi vs gprs/hsdpa.
But do we expect any less, they are only a phone provider FFS!
OK, have factory reset, still no internet access through wifi, any ideas ? ?
Do you get any wifi's coming up when you go to wireless controls -> Wifi settings?
if not, are you sure your router is set to discoverable?
I get a connection to the router and its shows on the hero as connected but all applications just say I have no network connection. Flick the wifi off then all back to normal :-(

Sounds like an addressing issue to me. There is no static ip definition on the mobile is there? Or possibly a dns config issue.
Sounds like osi layers 1+2 (ish) are working but layer 3>failing.
It's not a layer 8 issue is it?

Have you just tried that 1 wifi spot? Try another and determine whether it is just the phone, or the connection between your router and your phone.

I definitely think you should try it out on another access point just because I have seen issues like this in the past where a device and router just haven't got on. Obviously this isn't a "solution" but if you have difficulty elsewhere, it probably points to an issue with the device itself.
Another thing you may like to try is manually changing the channel for your WiFi network - again, I've had issues like this in the past when a particular device has real trouble when the WiFi was set to certain channels.
Regards,
Dave
How ironic, orange hero, with orange livebox on orange internet DON'T WORK !
Swapped to a Belkin N router, connects to wireless and all works fine
One less issue with the Hero
Thanks everyone

Wifi lan without internet?

Hey.. i was wondering if i can make the HDs wifi router to a local LAN ROUTER ONLY.
I will use the phone as a local router to a test environment. In that i mean that i will use the phone as a test router where many clients can connect to, without using my mobilecompany 3g/whatever line.
When you create the wifi router now, you have to select which line i will use with the router.. but i cant deselect, so it only makes a virtual LAN with no internet connection.. Is that possible?

The first problem you have here, is that you can only connect 1 device to the wifi router, not multiple devices. Secondly, it does only route wifi, so I doubt you'd be able to create a LAN even if you could connect more than 1 device.
Have you looked at WMWifiRouter? (http://www.wmwifirouter.com/)
It's not free, but there is a trial version, and I believe it allows you to connect more than 1 device at a time. It would still be an internet connection, but everything would be assigned an IP address from the HD2, so you should be able to use it as a LAN regardless.
Also, it may be possible to use WMWifiRouter with the phone in Airplane mode, so that would obviously give you a LAN with no internet access. Again, you can't do this with the default router, but you may be able to do it with WMWifiRouter.
ok well..
Well... thats not right..
I had 3 computers connected to it today. So the thing that you only can connect 1 to the wifirouter, is sadly wrong...
I tried the thing putting it on airplane mode, but it doesn't work.. thats why i asked here. hehe.
I'll try the software you said

Okay, I take that back then. I've never actually tried it myself - that was something I read on here. Goes to show how trustworthy advice on here can be lol
Heheh
Found a crap solution. just create a new connection under connections which doesn't have any relation to your mobilecompany.

well that didn't work either.. hehe.. And the problem you suggested is a "copy" of what the HDs already installed wifi router.. So you dont got that posibility.

Yeah, I only suggested that really because I thought that the in-built version could only be used for 1 device at a time.
The only thing I can think of now is to set a proxy for the internet connection on your phone, either a fake one, or a real one that simply blocks HTTP requests.
Worth a try?
..
Yup. Ill try that
i'm actually not sure how to do that.. can you tell me how?

Yes mate. Go to Settings (or Settings tab, Menu, All Settings) and Connections, Connections, and then "Set up my proxy server". I just tried setting it to my home PC (which has no proxy server running on it) and it allows the data connection, but returns 404 errors for any HTTP requests.
I've just tested this and I get 404 errors when making HTTP requests on my laptop. It seems to do what you need.
Hope it helps mate
GREAT! I will test it thanks m8

at home wifi internet connection problems...

Alright alright shoot me if this has already been asked or mentioned or thought of by anyone here or any one who you ever knew. I've been searching the entire net, the XDA forums have nothin on the subject (the the search function and i arent seeing eye to eye.).
My problem is this,
I am at home, connecting to my router, and that connects fine. But i am not connected to the internet. On my PC there is an option if i want to connect to the network, and then the internet. But in the HD2, there is no option to connect, Im only connecting ot the network, but not internet access.
went to a buddys house, he got his wi fi up and running in a matter of seconds, he did exactly as i have done, located the connection, typed the pass, and that was that.
but i cannot even find a place that asks me for an internect connection after i have connected to the network, nothing there.
And i cannot find any help on this subject.
i hope you get me if not, then dont bother. i am tired of reading mountains of crap that has nothing to do with my problem.
thanks in advance
appologies for my tone, just a little frustrated right now.
ah, btw, my 3g connect works fine. just not the wifi.
Once the network is connected there's nothing more to do to get internet access. At home, does it take a long time for the HD2 to connect to the network (arrows moving on the wifi icon more than ~5secs)? If you co to connection manager -> wifi -> advanced -> advanced tab, what IP do you have?
Well it connects to 'alice-wlan' really quickly, and automatically.
but there is still no internet connection. i think its a router setting problem, because on my pc i also have to connect first to alice.wlan (does it autoimatically) but then i have to manually connect to the internet (broadband)... i do not knwo how to change this.
i dont know what IP i have, you mean as a router?
correction,
now it connects to the router quite slow, if it does at all, then drops it almost immediatly.

that makes me think you are using the old style routers that don't hold the broadband always open. meaning either the router or the pc need to dial the adsl. usually you put the connection details into the router and it handles it,,
just thinking out loud.
Hmm actually now you say that I've been at someone's place recently where they had an ADSL plan that was time-billed, so they had to open a browser and login before being able to access the web...

it says 0.0.0.0 hmmm i dont know if that right tho
Wait until the arrows stop moving on the wifi icon, and it whould then say something more relevant.
still nothing, 0.0.0.0 ...

well, in win7 i alice connects automatically, then theres a broadband (internet) tab, i click on that, and it runs the use/pass and connects.

Have problem using WIFI on school campus

I can pick up the WIFI, and it says excellent connection, but the school requires a login page for you to enter your username and password before you can start browsing.
So after I'm connected, I try opening a browser but it instantly says I dont have internet access. I dont know what to do or how to fix this. Has this happened to anyone else?
If your campus is like mine, you may have to go to the IT help office. Once a year I need to do this to have a clearance installed on my laptop. Havent tried yet for my G2 but I know we support iphones for wifi on campus.
How safe is it to connect the G2 to a open network without security though? Thats what worries me about connecting my G2 to my schools WiFi.
as long as there is no protection on the Wifi it is possible for other users to see what you send and receive on your phone over wifi.

I'd worry more about connecting your computer to the WiFi. As far as open WiFi goes, the school ones is probably more secure than your random Starbucks is, however.
This is how to get WIFI on my campus, maybe yours might be the same
http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/network/wireless/android.html
The thing is my school network doesn't prompt me for a password.
As of now I have yet to fix the problem. In some buildings, I have no problem using the WIFI. Basically connect to the network, open my browser and it will ask me to input my ID and password and done.
But there are times where I connect to the network, open my browser and it just shows an offline page. I can keep on refreshing, but it just loads the offline page right away, and I can't find a way to input my password.
I've tried bookmarking the input page, but it still doesn't work.
I've also tried copying down the IP and DNS but it didnt work either.. and too troublesome.
For some reason WIFI on android just sucks. My old old sony ericsson phone could connect to the school network every single time. It could also connect to the ad-hoc network my windows 7 laptop send out using connectify.
Yet my new desire z has problem connecting to campus networks and cannot see ad-hoc until i temproot it and mess with the system files.
ironic huh
Really? In my school am able to connect with my g2
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
Unfortunately there is not known any other way for the ad hoc except root and temp root.I does not work also on the latest 1.82.

Dude the op stated he needed a username and password..so how exactly is that an open network?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
If it's anything like my school, it will be WPA-Enterprise.
ID will usually be: (domain)\(student ID) where (domain) is your schools domain (ask IT for it) followed by your student ID
PW will usually be the same password you use to log into the school computers.
IT people are usually helpful in getting your devices onto the school network.

This would happen to me on my campus also. What I would do is either keep pressing the back button until the browser exits completely, go back to the homepage(browser homepage), or just reboot the phone/kill browser task. Its certainly not consistent but at least one of those three would solve the problem on my campus.
On the other hand, my campus is in the city so generally hspa+ is faster than campus wifi (sad i know)

Paranoia is a disease unto itself and may I add the person standing next to you may not be who they appear to be so take precaution.
More than likely you have to register your MAC address with the school. Should be done with the computer department (probably via a web page).

this can sometimes be the case, although on my g2 here at Oxford College of Emory University, I never had to go to IT to officially register at all.
something that might work, though. Try not using the stock browser, but instead something like miren, dolphin browser or the like, and set the browser to use the desktop mode. Usually this will bring up the login screen, just like it would as if you had logged in from your laptop. hope that works for you, if not, pm me or hit me up on google talk (same user) and I can try to help troubleshoot some other possibilities.

[Q] Wifi not working like other devices!

At school we have the wifi password, G2 connects but has limited funtionality... Ipods work fine can even download and browse youtube!. Thought it was and Android issue but friend brought inhis Motorola Xoom and it browsed Youtube flawlessly in 720p and could even access and download apps throught the market! I figured maybe he was just lucky and my G2 was not configured right. But this really puzzled me when another friends brings a Metro PCS (P.O.S.) Android phone in and can download and browse youtube and download as well....
P.S. - When I had G1 Yotube did not work from app but occasinally while my other friend Moto Cliq worked and that ran 1.5 Cupcake while my G1 had 2.1 Eclaire!!!
Are out phone getting old? Not compatible? or is it just time to move on?
Something is definitely not right on your phone. I watch YouTube, download huge files, and everything internet related on WiFi on my Vision. I don't know how you get along without being able to!
You should try a factory reset and if that doesn't fix it take it to the shop and say wifi is not working as it should.
This is only at school though, at home it works fine... but everyone else's work without ease.

So is only youtube giving you issues, or any app that needs internet data?
Just an idea, but go to WiFi settings and try changing the network's security settings. For example, for my university I have to set the following:
EAP method: TTLS
Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
