[Q] Pre-ordering tomorrow - need some advice please - Atrix 4G General

Hi all,
I called my local ATT store an will be pre-ordering the Atrix tomorrow, I'm currently on Sprint. He said something about setting up a temporary number and doing the port when the phone comes in. Does anyone know what he's talking about? And is there any deals or incentives that I should ask about for switching carriers?

When you order the phone you just don't port your number. Once you know you're happy with the service, you port your number, which will cancel your Sprint account. Otherwise, if you DO port your number right away and you end up cancelling your account within that 30 day window, you'll lose your phone number. That's what he was talking about.

Pre-order is available tonight (Saturday)

Its up, still on the fence but I really don't like my Samsun Captivate.

Adding another line but activating the EVO on a current line...

I'm on a family plan with sprint and I am planning to add a friend of mine for the EVO 4G. The plan is to give him my hero and buy the EVO with the new line discount but activate the EVO on my existing line.We moved to Sprint from AT&T and have done this multiple times (including having the store employees help us do it) and have never had any problems.
I went into the sprint store today to make sure everything was kosher and according to the employee I talked to this is fraud. He said that I would be ineligible for the MFG rebate and they may even charge my account for the full price of the phone. Is any of this true?
Basically what I really need to know is...
1. Can I add the new line with RadioShack and have them activate the phone on my line and the Hero on the new line?
2. Is it likely that they will charge me more than $200 for doing so?
3. The employee also mentioned waiting 30 days to switch the phones, is this necessary?
On a lighter note he did inform me that my city (Jacksonville, FL) will be getting 4G by the end of July

that employee is a retard...
to my knowledge you have to activate the new phone on the new line first... but there is no time limit that you must keep it on said line
Actually I've talked to various different Sprint employees and they have told me that if you open a new line, you can switch the phone over, but you HAVE to keep the 2nd line open for 30-45 days. If you close the 2nd line immediately after getting the discount and transfer the Evo to your primary line -- that is considered fraud.
However, if you open a second line and have the Evo activated on that said line -- then you CAN close your primary line with no issues, even if it's right after opening the 2nd one. You'd lose your number, but you wouldn't have to wait 30-45 days.
Good luck!

Oh I have no intention of closing either line, I just want to have the EVO on my line. My friend is planning on staying on our plan with my Hero. He's also going to port his number over so we can't just switch phone numbers (it would be too confusing for our other friends)
If you have a third cdma phone you can try:
Main Line: Add third phone in place of Hero
New Line: Add Hero to this line
Main Line: Replace third cdma phone with new Evo
You can't do a direct swap from the Hero to your new line because the phone will be activated.
You other alt if to find a good sprint store that can do this for you.
I am doing the same thing. The guy at Radio Shack told me he has heard of Sprint charging me if I don't keep the phone on that line from 90 days...I laughed at him. I say it would make sense that Sprint could charge me if I canceled the second line before 30/60/90 days, but like you I will be keeping the line open. I am not worried about the threats of being charged. Sprint customer service is usually pretty good about making customers happy.
the main thing that they are talking about is u dont keep the phone on the line u activated it with the discounts (upgrade or new activation) for 30 days u wont get ur mail in rebate back on the line thats y it takes 10-14 weeks to get it back because no matter when u mail in the form they dont start working it for 30 days after u buy the phone if u dont care about the mail in rebate then u can esn swap all u want they wont charge u for esn swapping the dev within the 30 days other than keeping the mail in rebate

I gave up trying to read that without proper English formatting.
Im getting the Evo on a new line since my upgrade isnt until October. I spoke to Sprint and they said I could transfer the phone numbers between the old line and the new line and then I can cancel the old line. Basically I am keeping the new contract but with my old number so their are no issues of fraud.

1. No. They have to activate the new phone on the new line to get your pricing to come up right, and to get paid properly for the sale.
2. n/a, see answer 1
3. While you might be able to get around that by calling sprint, it screws over the store that sold it to you as they will get charged back for the subsidy on your phone. (Yes, I realise most customers dont care, but those of us working in the stores have to eat too ya know?)

It's just a retarded system. /shrug
I did'nt know that Radio Shack was dealing with the mfc rebate. Are they? I was assuming it was similar to Best Buy, $50 card, but with $20 accessory thrown in.
After reading this I called Best Buy, I have 3 lines, one upgradable now. I am going to use that one for my Evo, with my phonenumber, and give my Hero, to my husband, and switch his number over to that from old phone which is the upgradeable line. (hope that make sense)
BestBuy, said no problem, they just do a Hardware .something lol, and I just need to make sure I bring in the upgradable phone for verification. But again, not deaing with any Mfc rebate in this case.

[Q] Buying an Epic 4G on a friend's account.

So right now i have a HTC Hero on a SWAC (advantage club) account and want to pick up an Epic 4g when it comes out. I emailed the SWAC people and they said they can activate the Epic for me if i buy one at retail cost which i dont mind paying since im not eligible for an upgrade anyways. Since normal employees cant touch SWAC accounts it seems like i cant buy one from a corporate store myself since they will not be able to activate it. Does anyone know if ill have any problems buying the phone on a friend's account and then just switching it over to my account afterwards?
It depends on your friends Sprint account and credit standing.
I currently am opening a line on my friends current family plan. Its the 3rd line on her account, so Sprint wants a $100 deposit to open the line. This is on top of the $250 for the phone.
I think if you are getting the phone retail full price off contract, it won't be a problem, but if you buy it on contract you will have to pay cancelation fees if they don't keep the line open.

You will lose the rebate if transferred within 30 days. If transferred within 30 days the number must be kept. If number is not kept and cancelled, the phone must be returned. If kept past 30 days, you are now in contract.... Only way it will work is if friend allows you to use the upgrade on their personal line and you transfer the phone to your account. If transferred within 30 days, rebate is lost, if after, rebate is still good.
I was actually planning on buying the phone at the full $500 on my friends account, and basically have him activate the Epic on his phone number and deactivate his EVO. Then once we leave, we would call in and reactivate his EVO which im hoping would allow me to activate the Epic on my number.

If you're going to do that just buy the phone on ebay or amazon or bb or rs full price and activate it on your account - save yourself the headache of activating/deactivating phones for no reason
Thats my backup plan, Sprint's retail price is actually at least $100 bucks cheaper then the other stores ive seen so far though, which is why im considering doing it this way.
be VERY careful with this, and consult the employee who has the SWAC under their name. In some areas, he/she can get fired if you put one on your line.

T-Mobile's Stance on Returned G2's for those who extended their contract.

Today, I called T-Mobile because I returned my unresponsive G2 and wanted to go back to my previous state of not having a contract. I was within my 14 day grace period for my device so I believed that my contract would also be reverted back to the original status.
The customer retention guy with a heavy southern accent said that I signed a new contract for both the phone and the service... So If I want to be out of the contract, I need to pay a 200 dollar early deactivation fee because the contract with a new phone and the service is two separate contracts. How unfair is this? I extended my contract to get a discount on the phone that stopped working after a few days. Now I can't get back my non contract status??? This is so ridiculous.
I told the guy that I will cancel my account and go with ATT+ the iFail and he promptly told me that I will be billed 200 dollars plus any service usage. I asked to speak to his supervisor and he said he was a supervisor in a very coy and belittling way. I proceeded with "you can take that bill and stick it up your ass you f*ck" and hung up. Am I really obliged to pay that 200 dollar deactivation fee? Anybody here know how this works? I'm so frustrated and angry at T-Mobile for treating a long time customer like this... I was thinking the service contract extension and the phone are together as one. Any suggestions?
No, if you returned the phone within 14days you return the contract extension also. I did this when I bought my Vibrant. I bought it with a contract extension, then returned it and went on to buy another Vibrant from costco at a stupidly cheap off contract price. On the return of my Vibrant to the T-mo store I was refunded the price of the phone and my contact extension was reversed. I am currently still off contract and can upgrade if I choose to.
As the poster below says... be nice but firm, know your rights.
Call back and try another rep. Bit of advise though, comments like that just make the situation worse.

Damn bro. I would call back again and talk to another person. You have 14 days buyers remorse. Call t mobile and tell them your unhappy and want to return the phone.. That should do it bro.

Call 611.
Say Cancel.
Talk to loyalty representative. (Every rep is different, the other guy might've been an ignorant idiot)
If they don't budge & you are within your Still 14 day return policy call t-mobile, repeat the same process BUT this time have your call recorded (you shouldn't tell them b/c they will say they can't talk anymore and hangup, even though They CAN & Do Record your calls)... also be sure to bring up the issue during the call and bring up the day it is etc. (build your case within the call)
File a complaint with the BBB... companies take that seriously.
Make sure you word it so that it is EXPLICITLY Clear who's at fault & Why & provide some emotional appeal... you can mention your call was recorded and you have evidence (even though it May not be legally acceptable)
Your issue will get resolved.
I got in a dispute w/ Dish Netw0rk [contract issue] and had to go the BBB route to get my issue resolved.
btw don't get mad at them or tell them something that can bite you in the ass later... they make a lot of 'Notations on your acct' and other reps will refer to it in the future and may assist you based on that.
Call corporate. I called 6 times to a CSR at tmo to return that piece of crap vibrant and they all told me I couldn't return it even knowing of the issues it was having at the time. I called corporate tmobile and they settled it within 5 mins. Shipped my phone back, got a full refund, and got a g2 discounted at upgrade price when I wasn't even eligible for one.

Yeah call 611 talk to different reps!
@luis86dr - How did you fanagle the discounted price! That sounds awesome.
Here's the number for tmo corporate. Located in new mexico.
425-378-4000
Also I didn't have to hassle them at all. They offered me all that. My word of advice is make sure you state when you call you want to speak to someone in corporate. I called once and said I needed to speak to someone about my phone n they transfered me to the regular customer service reps who didn't do crap for me from the get go. So clarify you want to speak to someone from CORPORATE. Then you should be all gravy from there.

Always check your state laws before recording a telephone conversation. In some states it is a felony to record a phone call without the other party's consent.
Better off trying corp and seeing what happens... less of a headache.

Forget corporate, forget escalations.... I had to do the same ****... Call back, say blackberry at the automated prompt. You will immidiately be connected to Tech Support. Explain it to them, they'll hook you up!
Did you change your rate plan to one of the new plans? I'm just curious because if you dd then there is a contract extension for that and a separate one if you're eligible for an upgrade. If you return your phone within the remorse period then you are still eligible to get a full discounted upgrade but are still in contract due to the rate plan change. Hope that makes sense

First of all, T-Mobile corporate offices are headquartered in Bellevue, WA. Second, that 425 area code is for Kirkland / Bellevue area. Third, I used to work for them. Believe me that number took you straight to Bellevue. You may have been transferred elsewhere, but it took you there first.
@Delirius
When I was out of contract, they offered the phone first and just gave me a newer plan for loyal customers. They never said I was signing off on two contracts. When a normal person that wasn't on a contract, upgrades their phone... they would expect the phone and the new contract to be included in the 14 day remorse period. If that isn't the case, T-Mobile is basically tricking you into thinking that you have 14 days to decide if you want to stay with T-Mobile, or get back to non contracted status. Pretty shady if that's the case.
Also, why do I get the feeling you work at T-Mobile? Anyhow, if you were on the cheaper, non contracted Even More Plus plan, you will have to upgrade that plan to the Even More plan counterpart which is more expensive in order to cover the discounted phone price. So you are telling me they can't go back to their old plan under the remorse period? Pretty sneaky and underhanded way of forcing us to stay or pay the early termination fee.
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using XDA App
I don't disagree with you just wondering if they mentioned an extention for the rate plan change. From what it sounds like you were offered the unlimited loyalty plan for $49.99 and if that's the case then there is no contract for the plan. Just trying to find out the details so I can at least give some advice.
Edit: if you moved from even more plus (no contract) to even more (contracted) to get the discount on the phone then you did accept a contract for the change but if you returned the phone then there is a way to have the plan moved back. I would advise going to you nearest corporate T-Mobile store and speak to the manager and explain the situation. They have the ability to change it back to even more plus if the reason is good enough. If they don't know that they have this ability then they are unaware but they do have the ability. Hope that helps

Any tips on porting numbers and buying an EVO for Christmas?

The gal is eyeballing my EVO and is thinking about picking one up now, so I'm thinking of maybe picking one up for her instead for Christmas. So my goals here are to get her a new phone with her old number using a new plan under her name, all while still maintaining surprise on Christmas.
Just a little background, she'd be coming from T-mobile, her contract has been up since September, so she's good to a new carrier. She is wanting to change carriers to Sprint. She figured out that for the same price as her t-mobile plan (with a clamshell), she could get unlimited data, text and 450 minutes (unlimited talk for cellphones)...and also a student discount. Figured I'd mention that here so people don't think I'm just randomly changing her carrier.
Has anyone ever gone through this process before? What are the best steps to take to 1) buy the phone for her with a new account, 2) get her old number ported over after receiving the gift and 3) putting the phone in her name after giving it to her? (and 4. have a contingency to return the phone if she changes her mind)
My current plan involves the following steps:
1. Buy phone off of Amazon, sign up for new individual account under my name with a new number.
2. Give phone to the gal.
3. Immediately after if possible, call Sprint and port over her old number. (is this possible?)
4. Transfer account to her name (I will probably pick up the first month of service and activation).
I was looking at picking the phone up off of Amazon.com for $149 with free 2-day. If anyone else has any better thoughts/deals I'd be grateful for help in this area as well.
Porting numbers is a very easy thing to do:
1. The authorized contact on her account must give the OK for the port; essentially this would just involve your gf contacting TMo and inform them of an impending port request.
2. Provide Sprint with all the necessary TMo account information: account number, account PIN (if any), etc.
3. The port is completed while you are on the phone with them. I've never ported from TMo to Sprint, but I've ported between Sprint and VZ. It's very easy.
The only issue I see is that you are purchasing the phone with a subsidy. In other words, that phone is tied to a contract. When you port her number over, you are locking in to that two-year contract (her ported number replaces the new number on that device). Make sure you transfer the account to her name asap in case there aren't any wedding bells in the future
Also, you will have to probably pickup the pro-rated charges on both accounts; this can get pricey.
EDIT: call Sprint ahead of time, because you might get stuck with two contracts: one for the contract that came with the device purchase, and a 2nd for the ported number. That would suck. I am unsure if Sprint would just replace the number or require a new contract for the ported number. Call ahead to check on this.

But It's not nearly as fun to open! Gift cards suck as presents.
I wouldn't worry about getting stuck with two contracts, I've ported plenty of numbers to Sprint, no biggie. Just make sure her other account isn't still under contract so you wont have any ETF's. You will have to have some information ready before you can port, just her account #, passcode, etc for her existing line.
Also, you could just add a line to your plan to save some money. If you have to later, for whatever reason, you can remove her from your plan as long as she takes the number to another contract. I had to do that before, wasn't a problem.
And, there's a deal on cellulardeal.com for $140 Evo's, Just bought one for my girl yesterday, cause Amazon doesn't support contract renewals for Sprint yet, and she was getting tired of the Hero.

She's passed her contract with TMo, so we're good there. Honestly, I'm more worried about her making the switch herself and buying the phone before Xmas rolls around.
Hey, as long as I can buy the phone (with a new number on a separate individual contract), wrap it up, have her open it, port her number and transfer the contract to her so she's the sole owner of it...then I think we're good.
**off topic...wow I can renew my contract and pickup a brand new EVO? That's obscene! I might as well do that and then sell it on ebay for $400 and net a tasty little profit. (I bought my original EVO unsubsidized, and since I'm a premier member, I hit my 1 year mark for getting a new phone just recently). Wonder if I can utilize my full coverage warranty on my current EVO and get it cleaned up and scratch freed while I'm at it.

Funny, I'm just about to do the same thing with mine. Got another one coming in a few weeks, probably going on ebay. Gonna go see what the Sprint store can do for my over worn screen first though. I got lucky with my first Evo, I had the Best Buy insurance on my Hero, well when it got broken, they were out of Hero's and gave me an Evo. So I never had to use my upgrade to get it.
I used this line to gain access to my mom's account long enough to get her into a new phone for Christmas:
"OK, I was checking, I can get you on my work discount as soon as you add me as an authorized user."
After that:
-Buy new phone, activate long enough to set up, then switch back to original phone.
-Helped her "lose" her phone.
-Loaned her an OLD beater of mine.
-Christmas morning, dip beater in water and freeze. (to ensure it doesn't work...she didn't know it got frozen, but she knew she couldn't get a new one that day).
-Have sister call my phone to complain she can't get mom to answer and talk to her.
-Turn on new phone, start calling repeatedly while present opening is going on.
Modify as needed for a GF. It's a fun gift, well worth the work to go all out.

They have been around for a while, the regular wirefly site has it for 149 but adding friends in the url send you to a section with special pricingI just got my EVO from them for $119 with free shipping. You need to talk to them though about starting a new number and then porting one over after a months time. If you purchase online and select to port the number they will automatically port it within 5 days.

AT&T Incompetence

DISCLAIMER: This is a rant about AT&T's incompetence. Read at your own risk.
Fed up with T-Mobile's ongoing data issue in my neighborhood, I decided to jump ship to AT&T. Last Friday, I signed up for a 2-line family plan, ordered two GSIIIs (a blue for myself, and a white for my wife), and let the waiting game begin. On Monday night, I got a shipping confirmation, with a scheduled delivery on Thursday (today). On my way home from work, I tracked the package and saw that a delivery attempt was made, but my apartment number was missing. Having received countless packages via UPS (Amazon Prime member), I called UPS immediately upon walking through my front door. UPS informed me that no apartment number was indicated on the package and that I have to contact the shipper to have it added. I immediately asked if I could pick up the package at my local UPS depot, and the service rep informed me that the sender placed a restriction on the package and it can only be delivered (I can't pick up the package in person with a government-issued photo ID? Sounds like BS to me, but whatever). The rep then stated that UPS will require permission from the sender in order for me to pick it up in person.
I call AT&T and explain the situation to their service rep. The rep admits that the apartment number was omitted from my package's shipping address (really? I mean, really???) and that she'll be happy to contact UPS and have them change the address. I asked the rep to inform UPS that I am permitted to pick up the package in person. She stated that she will make the arrangements with UPS and placed me on hold. After a few minutes, the rep came back online and was "happy to inform me that she was able to get my apartment number added to the shipping address." Unfortunately, UPS will not allow me to pick up the package in person and will only deliver it, because of a restriction placed on it (BS - just a few minutes before, a UPS rep told me that the package can be released to me with sender's permission).
Here's the kicker. My billing period with T-Mobile is ending on Saturday, and I don't want to incur an additional month's charge (T-Mobile doesn't prorate final bills) in the event that my numbers aren't ported out in a timely manner. AT&T sure knows how to impress a new customer. If their employees are unable (or just incompetent) to correctly fill out a shipping label (seriously, how freakin' difficult is it to enter the apartment number into the correct field?), what does that say about the company? They were certainly competent enough to quickly charge my debit card for the phones!
I haven't made up my mind yet, but I'm considering refusing the package, getting my money back, and staying with T-Mobile. I haven't even used AT&T's service yet, but they've already managed to make a negative impression on me. T-Mobile's data really sucks in my neighborhood, but do I really want to commit to doing two years' worth of business with a company that not only can't seem to get their logistics right, but doesn't even know the policies of their shipping partner?
Again, this is just a rant. I probably should have gone to the store and saved myself the aggravation.
KGBKNY .. I can relate to issues also with AT&T, however .. until you get a real issue, what you experienced could have happened with ANY company.
AT&T is good .. although there systems only show that I have been with them since December 2005 (when they bought it back from Cingular), I have in fact been with AT&T since 1994 (and I even still have my first cell phone .. and it still works). I started with CellularOne in '94 in which was bought out by AT&T .. AT&T ran into financial issues and split its mobility department away from corporate AT&T and called it Cingular .. then of course, come 2005, AT&T regained control.
Now, in 18 years .. there has been ups and downs, and in all instances, they have come through for me with no problems. I have a family plan, 5 lines .. but believe me, they have perks for there long time customers that cannot be beaten. An example of one perk .. I now have a Samsung Galaxy S III .. most people on here (or around the world) are paying anything from $150 to $800 for this masterpiece .. I myself received the Marble White when the second batch was released last week .. paid absolutely nothing for it .. sorry, let me correct that, $ 4.95 for overnight shipping !!! But, here is the other perk .. no contract extension.
So, give them a chance, a shipping mishap is a little issue .. when you receive a $ 1M phone bill from them, then complain ..
Cheers .. and welcome to AT&T :highfive:
everyone makes mistakes and there are shipping errors all the time no matter the company or the parcel company itself. Don't judge AT&T until you get on their network. Plus like you said you could of gone to the store.
Goodluck
Just get the phone and you'll be satisfied. Sheesh. everyone makes mistakes. It shouldn't influence you to think badly of a company unless it happens on a consistent basis. I understand that it's beyond stupid how someone didn't enter the apartment number but it's one mistake... I would just advise you to give it time.
I been with at&t for 6 years and I have no complains. Excellent service and great customer service.

I agree...and concur what is said..They have had their ups & downs..but considering all of the BS I have gone through with Sprint..Verizon..T-mobile...AT&T mobile is the best hands down.Now..I will say this..check out the different stores in your area...not all are the same with regards to how well you will taken care of..or the knowledge of the staff...Luckily we have plenty of stores to choose from where I live..and can tell you there are night and day differences in both the staff and the store managers in each. Don't go in blowing steam...that will get you zero respect and help..but talk to them as you would expect to be talked to..and remember to get all of the techs information if you have to complain to the manager..They will be more than willing to help and keep you happy...even when dealing with issues of their other services...I got mine with a early no charge upgrade..and no extra fees because of issues I had with their stupid u-verse..and getting my Atrix 4g earlier this year...The longer your with them..the more perks you can get..you just have to know how to talk to them..

Thanks for the replies, everyone. However, my story gets even better. UPS is now showing "Returning to Sender" when I enter the tracking number. Now, I definitely have to wait for AT&T to receive the package in order to get the account canceled and my money credited back. Moreover, I also have to endure another month of T-Mobile. I swear, it almost seems like the universe is telling me not to sign up with AT&T. J/K
This has not been a positive experience at all....smh.
I switched over from Sprint and had some issues too with ATT.
First I started a new family plan with 2 lines that I was putting over from Sprint. The next day I decided to port over another one of my numbers from Sprint and grab the GS3. I was told to choose a individual plan for my GS3 until I receive the other 2 phones and then I just Derrick my plan from an individual plan to s family plan.
Well everything appeared to go fine, until they went to port my numbers over..they got all the numbers mixed up and I had to go to the ATT store to get a new sim card. So after that everything was all good.
Also the FedEx guy delivered my GS3 to the wrong house. Luckily the house was only 3 houses away from mine and I was able to catch the delivery guy before he got of work.
Blazed from my ATT Galaxy S III
A short update to my situation. Turns out that when a shipper requests restricted delivery from UPS, the address cannot be amended, even it's something as minor as an inclusion of an apartment number. If a package cannot be delivered to the address listed, UPS will automatically return it to sender. To make a long story short, I spoke with a customer service rep who spent a good 30 minutes helping me resolve this issue. Although I will have to wait until the returned package hits the warehouse for the money to be credited to me, I was given the option of buying the phones at my local store, located a block away from my place of work, and having my numbers ported to the new phones.
As they say, cooler heads prevail. During my lunch break, I went over to the store (the manager and the individual who processed my purchase were extremely knowledgeable and helpful) and bought the phones. It took about 5 minutes for the numbers to be ported over, and I was on my way back to the office. A short while later, I received a call from an AT&T rep with whom I spoke earlier in the week regarding the status of my order. She reviewed the notes on my account, apologized profusely for the inconvenience cause by the shipping mishap, and stated that she will waive my 1st month's bill to compensate me for it.
On a side note, seeing the speed test numbers (20 Mbps down, 13 Mbps up on the Upper East Side in Manhattan) made me question my sanity for dealing with T-Mobile's 0.5 Mbps for the past year.
