Adding another line but activating the EVO on a current line... - EVO 4G General

I'm on a family plan with sprint and I am planning to add a friend of mine for the EVO 4G. The plan is to give him my hero and buy the EVO with the new line discount but activate the EVO on my existing line.We moved to Sprint from AT&T and have done this multiple times (including having the store employees help us do it) and have never had any problems.
I went into the sprint store today to make sure everything was kosher and according to the employee I talked to this is fraud. He said that I would be ineligible for the MFG rebate and they may even charge my account for the full price of the phone. Is any of this true?
Basically what I really need to know is...
1. Can I add the new line with RadioShack and have them activate the phone on my line and the Hero on the new line?
2. Is it likely that they will charge me more than $200 for doing so?
3. The employee also mentioned waiting 30 days to switch the phones, is this necessary?
On a lighter note he did inform me that my city (Jacksonville, FL) will be getting 4G by the end of July

that employee is a retard...
to my knowledge you have to activate the new phone on the new line first... but there is no time limit that you must keep it on said line

Actually I've talked to various different Sprint employees and they have told me that if you open a new line, you can switch the phone over, but you HAVE to keep the 2nd line open for 30-45 days. If you close the 2nd line immediately after getting the discount and transfer the Evo to your primary line -- that is considered fraud.
However, if you open a second line and have the Evo activated on that said line -- then you CAN close your primary line with no issues, even if it's right after opening the 2nd one. You'd lose your number, but you wouldn't have to wait 30-45 days.
Good luck!

Oh I have no intention of closing either line, I just want to have the EVO on my line. My friend is planning on staying on our plan with my Hero. He's also going to port his number over so we can't just switch phone numbers (it would be too confusing for our other friends)

If you have a third cdma phone you can try:
Main Line: Add third phone in place of Hero
New Line: Add Hero to this line
Main Line: Replace third cdma phone with new Evo
You can't do a direct swap from the Hero to your new line because the phone will be activated.
You other alt if to find a good sprint store that can do this for you.

I am doing the same thing. The guy at Radio Shack told me he has heard of Sprint charging me if I don't keep the phone on that line from 90 days...I laughed at him. I say it would make sense that Sprint could charge me if I canceled the second line before 30/60/90 days, but like you I will be keeping the line open. I am not worried about the threats of being charged. Sprint customer service is usually pretty good about making customers happy.

the main thing that they are talking about is u dont keep the phone on the line u activated it with the discounts (upgrade or new activation) for 30 days u wont get ur mail in rebate back on the line thats y it takes 10-14 weeks to get it back because no matter when u mail in the form they dont start working it for 30 days after u buy the phone if u dont care about the mail in rebate then u can esn swap all u want they wont charge u for esn swapping the dev within the 30 days other than keeping the mail in rebate

I gave up trying to read that without proper English formatting.

Im getting the Evo on a new line since my upgrade isnt until October. I spoke to Sprint and they said I could transfer the phone numbers between the old line and the new line and then I can cancel the old line. Basically I am keeping the new contract but with my old number so their are no issues of fraud.

1. No. They have to activate the new phone on the new line to get your pricing to come up right, and to get paid properly for the sale.
2. n/a, see answer 1
3. While you might be able to get around that by calling sprint, it screws over the store that sold it to you as they will get charged back for the subsidy on your phone. (Yes, I realise most customers dont care, but those of us working in the stores have to eat too ya know?)

Could you explain that to me? I don't understand why they would lose anything if I'm keeping both lines open.

It's just a retarded system. /shrug

I did'nt know that Radio Shack was dealing with the mfc rebate. Are they? I was assuming it was similar to Best Buy, $50 card, but with $20 accessory thrown in.
After reading this I called Best Buy, I have 3 lines, one upgradable now. I am going to use that one for my Evo, with my phonenumber, and give my Hero, to my husband, and switch his number over to that from old phone which is the upgradeable line. (hope that make sense)
BestBuy, said no problem, they just do a Hardware .something lol, and I just need to make sure I bring in the upgradable phone for verification. But again, not deaing with any Mfc rebate in this case.

can i use airave upgrade for evo???

ok i have 3 lines i just renewed on march but just received an airrave a month ago becvause of my bad signal at home.i was thinking of adding another line just to get the evo so went ahead and preordered today at bestbuy am number 25 on the list..the poinjt is that the rep told me i can use the airave but am not paying for airave service sprint wave the charge,so if i upgrade if i can with airave number would i loose the waived charge and can i just easily change esns like evo back to my number ?????????????please help
dont want to add another line...
im going to guess no but call and ask them
I'm in this exact situaiton and did call Sprint about it. They said that yes upgrade could be used but that no mail in rebate would be honored.
I agree with them in theory but my bigger worry would be that since the EVO would be activated on the airave's line it ouwld compltely screw up the biling and trying to fix it would be a nightmare if not impossible since at that point Sprint would figure out what you were rying to pull.
This is a lesson to Sprint that these "complmentary" airave lines should be somehow notated to NEVER have an upgrade. That would solve any potential loophole.
well i havent called sprint but checked online it say upgrade eligible 5\01\10 but when i try to upgrade online it says that i need to set this line to 39.99 a month for me to get the $150 discount..ita quite confusing though i wish somebody from sprint would look at this and give us an answer ..bfre we commit suicide and end up screwing ip our accounts,,,,,

I just called SPrint and the lady said that could it technically be done... yes but would most likely take someone who knows what their doing.
the reason we all have an upgrade on the AIRAVE lline for 5/1/2010 is because a) we technically never bought the equipment so just like if a friend gave you a phone and you activated it you never used the initial upgrade credit and b) their new system requires all devices ot have a phone number attached to them.
my biggest concern in working the system is that the EVO gets activated on the AIRAVE line even if just for a few minutes and that would basically render the whole free AIRAVE deal null and voice. Unfortunately because of the poor signal in my new place and my phone being for business I don't know if I want to risk it.
Maybe if it gets blogged about and we complain enough Sprint will realize its just easier to realize there's a loophole in their systems and give those of us who complain about it enough the break

i need sprint account advice. please..

Sup. I am new to xda but have a lot of time over at sdx.
I have a tricky issue:
I got my account on may 3rd. I want the evo but won't be released until
2 days after my "sprint worry free" end date. I am told by the store manager, account retention, customer care, account services and the manger at local bb the only way for
Me to get the evo at the 199 price is to cancel under worry free and restart the entire
Account when the evo is released.in my case I will likely cancel tommorrow and go over to bb tommorrow to preorder. As you can see I am really wanting the evo...
Long story|short.. if I cancel my account they all say I will not be denied service
A b|c my credit isn't re-run for 60 days from first app and b, the worry free has no penalties in my case..
It seems hard to believe. That seems to be a big loophole for sprint..
Is it true? I ask cause I had no deposit the first time and would like to save cash where I can...thx for any advice...
I don't think you cancel and sign back up like that
i don't see why not. although you wont be able to keep your same number.
Yeah . They say can't guarantee me my #. But I don't have any friends..j|k..
I have talked to like 5 managers. They act like no one else has ever asked about this.
yes its possible i ask sprint sustomer service and they said that u dont have to wait day or a day soo yeah im pretty sure yeah
I beleive that there is a "waiting" period when you do something like that. I have heard it is sixty days.

i work for sprint and alot of people have called and asked the same question..... so here is your answer that you are not gonna want to hear.
if you cancel you line and you only have 1 line on the account then you will have to wait 60 days before you can open a new account.
but if you do it the right way u can still get your evo on june 4th . you can go to sprint today and open up a second line but dont buy a phone there start the new line with another sprint phone that you already have (or buy a cheap one off craigslist) and then wait till tomorrow and cancel the original line. on june 4th go to radio shack or Best buy (since its only 199 there) and do an upgrade on the new line. you are able to upgrade since sprint did not provide you with a phone when you started your new line... i hope that wasnt confusing for you, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask...

If you were approved for more than one line when you signed up, you can add the evo on one of those other lines, and then cancel the original line (though if its over 30 days you'll have to pay the etf, but you could just sell the hero to cover that cost. That would be the easiest way.

How can I get an X?

I got a a Touch Pro 2 in November of 2009 and I hate the friggin thing. It's slow as hell and no way compares the to X. I called Verizon and they said I was not able to upgrade until August 2011. I simply can't have that. So does anyone have any advice as to what I can do to get this amazing phone within the next couple weeks. I am almost desperate enough to sign up for another plan just to get this phone.
Hell if your going to sign up for another plan you mas as well just pay full retail for the phone because its going to eat you up with early termination fees. Or you can always hit up ebay you might find a new never opened clean esn phone
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
You may be able to buy a cheap dumbphone on craigslist (verizon branded) and have that activate don your main line (change ESN) then you can call customer service and tell them you no longer need the unlimited data for your current plan (so they drop the $30 a month) So then you're basically just paying for your minutes and any extra features you may have such as texting etc.
THEN, go to a verizon store or Best Buy and add a line to your account with the droid X, this will run you $9.99 + $30 a month on top of what you were paying for just minutes and text.
In essence if you get the data package canceled on the first line, then added on a second line, you will only be paying $10 more a month plus the price of the droid x, which can be offset by selling your touch pro 2
I agree with everyone here, but don't worry about getting a dumb phone to replace your tp2. When I got my incredible I went in the store ready to pay full retail, they said just open a new line and we can place a fake esn on your line. Just depends on where you go. And I'm glad I didn't pay full retail, cuz I wouldn't have been able to get it replaced with a droid x.
I actually still have my old Chocolate and an old LG phone that I can't remember the name of, so should I just use those? And will VZW just let me cancel the $30 data plan?

I AM IN THE EXACT SAME BOAT AS YOU, Explodee. I bought the TP2 the day it came out for Verizon; before I had actually seen one. It was so hyped up that I thought it would be the best phone to EVER grace Vzw. Well turns out its a complete and total DUD. WinMo is by far the worst OS and I have only found about 3 apps that are worthwhile, while android has TONS of apps.
But, I know how you can get the X for the 2 year price. Just add a line. I added my family onto my account and they all got brand new BB's for the 2 year price, while my phone number didn't get any upgrade. I would just put a dummy phone on your current line, take off the data package, then open up a new line on your account with the Droid X, and switch to a family share plan.
I just switched my entire family over to my plan from Sprint, so I told the Vzw people I wanted an early upgrade if they were going to get 4 extra phone lines from their competitor. They agreed, thank god! I couldn't go another year with this TP2.
Good luck!
I should have mentioned this earlier. I am already on a family plan with my mom, bro and sis. None of them are eligible for upgrades for about a year as well. I also wanted my number to be on the X and if I had to sign up for a new account I would want to get the X for the new one, then immediately switch the service between the phones. Is that possible?
Also, would I be able to sign up for the X and cancel the data package and put the dummy phone on the X account?
Look lol I've screwed Verizon over every way possible lol, I've had EVERY Droid branded phone they made (yes even the eris ewww) and have never paid over the two year price for them and have kept the same line everytime. It just depends on how much the rep you talk to wants your business. I go to the same guy everytime, so I get a really good deal everytime. Your best bet is to make friends with someone at your local corporate store and go from there, or just add a line with the x, switch a dummy esn to that line and cancel the data package. Then switch the x to your original line, and your done. You don't even have to take the data plan off your line that way. Hope this has been helpful.

I have to chuckle every time someone posts that they have screwed a cell company.
Really? Keep reminding yourself that every month when you pay the bill.
I've been on VZW for a long time, have numerous lines with them, and have convinced them to give me early upgrades on several occasions. Not once did I think I had screwed them. At 'BEST' I felt like I got a little recognition for being a long time customer. I'm pretty sure they are still very profitable on our business.
-Z
Zaphod, you have a point. Cell phone companies make all their profit in their monthly bills, not in selling cell phones. If they did, you could get a new phone every day if you wanted.
My buddy works at walmart in the electronics department, and I had mentioned the Droid x to him. He said that a guy came in and bought a X for full retail price, 500 something dollars from him. On the register he can look up and see what how much Walmart made off of the transaction (percentage value and only for certain electronics like computers, tvs and carrier based cell phones). He told me that even at full retail, Walmart still lost money.
Vzw screws you over every month, we just help take the edge off the price by giving them 200 bucks towards a droid x

[Q] Buying an Epic 4G on a friend's account.

So right now i have a HTC Hero on a SWAC (advantage club) account and want to pick up an Epic 4g when it comes out. I emailed the SWAC people and they said they can activate the Epic for me if i buy one at retail cost which i dont mind paying since im not eligible for an upgrade anyways. Since normal employees cant touch SWAC accounts it seems like i cant buy one from a corporate store myself since they will not be able to activate it. Does anyone know if ill have any problems buying the phone on a friend's account and then just switching it over to my account afterwards?
It depends on your friends Sprint account and credit standing.
I currently am opening a line on my friends current family plan. Its the 3rd line on her account, so Sprint wants a $100 deposit to open the line. This is on top of the $250 for the phone.
I think if you are getting the phone retail full price off contract, it won't be a problem, but if you buy it on contract you will have to pay cancelation fees if they don't keep the line open.

You will lose the rebate if transferred within 30 days. If transferred within 30 days the number must be kept. If number is not kept and cancelled, the phone must be returned. If kept past 30 days, you are now in contract.... Only way it will work is if friend allows you to use the upgrade on their personal line and you transfer the phone to your account. If transferred within 30 days, rebate is lost, if after, rebate is still good.
I was actually planning on buying the phone at the full $500 on my friends account, and basically have him activate the Epic on his phone number and deactivate his EVO. Then once we leave, we would call in and reactivate his EVO which im hoping would allow me to activate the Epic on my number.

If you're going to do that just buy the phone on ebay or amazon or bb or rs full price and activate it on your account - save yourself the headache of activating/deactivating phones for no reason
Thats my backup plan, Sprint's retail price is actually at least $100 bucks cheaper then the other stores ive seen so far though, which is why im considering doing it this way.
be VERY careful with this, and consult the employee who has the SWAC under their name. In some areas, he/she can get fired if you put one on your line.

Any tips on porting numbers and buying an EVO for Christmas?

The gal is eyeballing my EVO and is thinking about picking one up now, so I'm thinking of maybe picking one up for her instead for Christmas. So my goals here are to get her a new phone with her old number using a new plan under her name, all while still maintaining surprise on Christmas.
Just a little background, she'd be coming from T-mobile, her contract has been up since September, so she's good to a new carrier. She is wanting to change carriers to Sprint. She figured out that for the same price as her t-mobile plan (with a clamshell), she could get unlimited data, text and 450 minutes (unlimited talk for cellphones)...and also a student discount. Figured I'd mention that here so people don't think I'm just randomly changing her carrier.
Has anyone ever gone through this process before? What are the best steps to take to 1) buy the phone for her with a new account, 2) get her old number ported over after receiving the gift and 3) putting the phone in her name after giving it to her? (and 4. have a contingency to return the phone if she changes her mind)
My current plan involves the following steps:
1. Buy phone off of Amazon, sign up for new individual account under my name with a new number.
2. Give phone to the gal.
3. Immediately after if possible, call Sprint and port over her old number. (is this possible?)
4. Transfer account to her name (I will probably pick up the first month of service and activation).
I was looking at picking the phone up off of Amazon.com for $149 with free 2-day. If anyone else has any better thoughts/deals I'd be grateful for help in this area as well.
Porting numbers is a very easy thing to do:
1. The authorized contact on her account must give the OK for the port; essentially this would just involve your gf contacting TMo and inform them of an impending port request.
2. Provide Sprint with all the necessary TMo account information: account number, account PIN (if any), etc.
3. The port is completed while you are on the phone with them. I've never ported from TMo to Sprint, but I've ported between Sprint and VZ. It's very easy.
The only issue I see is that you are purchasing the phone with a subsidy. In other words, that phone is tied to a contract. When you port her number over, you are locking in to that two-year contract (her ported number replaces the new number on that device). Make sure you transfer the account to her name asap in case there aren't any wedding bells in the future
Also, you will have to probably pickup the pro-rated charges on both accounts; this can get pricey.
EDIT: call Sprint ahead of time, because you might get stuck with two contracts: one for the contract that came with the device purchase, and a 2nd for the ported number. That would suck. I am unsure if Sprint would just replace the number or require a new contract for the ported number. Call ahead to check on this.

You know...perhaps I'm going about this all wrong. Maybe an Amazon gift card for the price of the phone would make more sense.

But It's not nearly as fun to open! Gift cards suck as presents.
I wouldn't worry about getting stuck with two contracts, I've ported plenty of numbers to Sprint, no biggie. Just make sure her other account isn't still under contract so you wont have any ETF's. You will have to have some information ready before you can port, just her account #, passcode, etc for her existing line.
Also, you could just add a line to your plan to save some money. If you have to later, for whatever reason, you can remove her from your plan as long as she takes the number to another contract. I had to do that before, wasn't a problem.
And, there's a deal on cellulardeal.com for $140 Evo's, Just bought one for my girl yesterday, cause Amazon doesn't support contract renewals for Sprint yet, and she was getting tired of the Hero.

She's passed her contract with TMo, so we're good there. Honestly, I'm more worried about her making the switch herself and buying the phone before Xmas rolls around.
Hey, as long as I can buy the phone (with a new number on a separate individual contract), wrap it up, have her open it, port her number and transfer the contract to her so she's the sole owner of it...then I think we're good.
**off topic...wow I can renew my contract and pickup a brand new EVO? That's obscene! I might as well do that and then sell it on ebay for $400 and net a tasty little profit. (I bought my original EVO unsubsidized, and since I'm a premier member, I hit my 1 year mark for getting a new phone just recently). Wonder if I can utilize my full coverage warranty on my current EVO and get it cleaned up and scratch freed while I'm at it.

Funny, I'm just about to do the same thing with mine. Got another one coming in a few weeks, probably going on ebay. Gonna go see what the Sprint store can do for my over worn screen first though. I got lucky with my first Evo, I had the Best Buy insurance on my Hero, well when it got broken, they were out of Hero's and gave me an Evo. So I never had to use my upgrade to get it.
I used this line to gain access to my mom's account long enough to get her into a new phone for Christmas:
"OK, I was checking, I can get you on my work discount as soon as you add me as an authorized user."
After that:
-Buy new phone, activate long enough to set up, then switch back to original phone.
-Helped her "lose" her phone.
-Loaned her an OLD beater of mine.
-Christmas morning, dip beater in water and freeze. (to ensure it doesn't work...she didn't know it got frozen, but she knew she couldn't get a new one that day).
-Have sister call my phone to complain she can't get mom to answer and talk to her.
-Turn on new phone, start calling repeatedly while present opening is going on.
Modify as needed for a GF. It's a fun gift, well worth the work to go all out.
go to wireflyfriends dot com. They have been around for a while, the regular wirefly site has it for 149 but adding friends in the url send you to a section with special pricingI just got my EVO from them for $119 with free shipping. You need to talk to them though about starting a new number and then porting one over after a months time. If you purchase online and select to port the number they will automatically port it within 5 days.
