fm transmitter for defy? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I travel a lot & use my tomtom for directions, to answer calls via BT and to transmit my mp3s to the car radio. I know that the defy has a built in fm radio but was wondering if anyone had seen an fm transmitter to suit the defy?

Kind of funny posting a reply to my own question but thought other ppl might be checking up on this.
I've found 2 possible ways to transmit audio from your defy to your car's fm radio.
1) using tunelink for android, this would work well, but costs US$100, this has just been released as far as i'm aware.
2) As per another forum post on xda, the defy has a built in fm transmitter, cool, so save ur US$100 and spend it on ur girlfriend!

I use the old Motorola T505 bluetooth speakerphone with FM transmitter for a long time now, and it has always worked flawlessly (currently paired with my WM phone). There are many of them for sale on eBay, much cheaper than Tunnelink's. However, if some cook out there figures out how to activate the Defy's FM transmitter, it will mean less gadgets (and chargers) to carry.
Regards,
Carlos
UPDATE: my old T505 is now paired with my new Defy, and it keeps working flawlessly, for both phone calls and music streaming to my car's radio.

same here, works fine, allow me to transmitt music and calls to the car fm
bought for 55$ on ebay

Unless I'm missing something here, the FM transmitter can be found in the Music App open it and click the radio icon at the botton of the home screen, you will need the headphones plugged in for the Fm radio to work.

this is the radio reciever

Sorry I miss read the post. Wasn't aware that the Defy had a FM transmitter. Had one for my iPod of awhile but didn't have much luck with it. There are to many FM stations in the area so finding a free freq is really had. The radios in my vehicles have the aux. jack so it's pretty easy with the patch cable. Don't know if it broadcast the phone that way though haven't tried it.

don't waste ur cash on an fm transmitter, my twin brother who has a defy has explained to me how to use bluetooth audio and I can now transmit the audio on my defy to my car radio via blue tooth, thanks PJ!

How did you set this up?

gday erra, pair ur phone with ur car radio making sure you select calls plus audio on the car radio side, then when ur phone is connected to ur car radio via this blue tooth link, when you play music on your mobile the car radio will play the music. your car will need to have blue tooth and also support blue tooth audio which I'm told is quite standard now, best to consult ur car's manual, good luck, it's awesome & clear as when u get it going, most important thing is to pair for calls & audio

it's nice to have our defy fm transmitter but i just don't like the fact that it only has 10 station presets ... we have around 20 here in the philippines ... but i really dont care that much barely tapping that radio button ...

I heard, that it works on Ipods from the new Generation...so perhaps you can look how they get it to work...

just to clear something up, the radio ur talking about is a fm receiver, the defy apparently has an fm transmitter on the phones board but no one can work out how to use it yet
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App

i doubt it has also an antenna for the fm transmitter.

I just got a t505, have only tested calls and music so far. Took one minute to set up and works flawlessly, no static, very clear on my end, pretty clear to others on calls. It is an old car with only a radio/cassette and the sound is surprisingly good for music, cuts the treble out a bit but sounds much clearer than expected. I like the way it automatically finds the best station and tells you to tune to it. No regrets at all

Cheaper alternatives
I was also looking for same device. So I searched "fm transmitter" at dealextreme. It's cheaper than Motorola (the quality, though, may be lower).

Hold on dirtbaghh - you're saying that Defy can transmit on FM? That would be cool. Any more info??

the t505 is very usefull and freespech is included. top!

USB Radio Transmitter

Does anyone know of a Kaiser compatable radio transmitter for the Kaiser so I can use it like an itrip and play my tunes from my kaiser in my car over a radio frequency?
anybody have any experience of this thing:-

Any old usb/headphone splitter will allow you to do this, as the FM transmitter element simply plugs into the 3.5mm headphone jack - FM transmitters are, notoriously, pants though but if its your only option, I would suggest getting your own splitter and then getting a different FM transmitter that has digital tuning, so you can select any frequency, and not be limited to 4.

You know what I am looking for... I would love to see a Bluetooth FM Transmitter. Then you can just enter your car, and wirelessly play your music through your phone. Anyone know if these even exist? I did a brief google search but it looked like everything was either a car kit for hands free talking or just people wishing they had one kind of like me.
Universal Belkin adapter.
Personally I use the belkin 3.5 inch universal FM transmitter.
the audio quality isnt grand but its very passable.

with my kaiser as soon as I get my miniUSB to 3.5 adapter in the mail.
I recomend it.
Say that again...
Hi...
FAO Captainsensible/JPHCCFC or others with experience on this...
I'm wanting to do the same thing but have absolutely no technical knowledge about this kind of thing.
I have a Mk4 VW Golf with the standard VW fit, quad speakers radio.
What products would I need to buy to get my Kaiser playing through the car speakers, and, how would I need to set it up.
Links to the products and detailed advice in plain English welcomed & much appreciated.
TIA.
Regards,
Mark.

I think the quality is better than the FM transmitter.

I use an iTech-clip connected to a cassete player adapter normally for a walkman. Gives me BT stereo music and when clipped to the sunvisor acts as a hands-free automatically cutting off the music when a call comes in.

It took me a while to track one down! But I finally did and I just purchased on off ebay... It is from a brand called Scosche. It sells new for US$90.
It functions as a Bluetooth Reciever (for bluetooth devices with Audio Push, such as the Keiser...) and as a hands free. It plugs into the car power, and I understand it has a built in battery for portability. I should be receiving it later next week, I'll update on how it works

I was one of the first in the states to get the venturi and have been using it for several weeks now. The quality is great and it is the only device I know of that transmits caller ID to the FM radio via RBDS. It is not the cheapest, but only thing i know that transmits FM, charges phone, and does bluetooth calling/stereo. (not to mention it works flawlessly with the Tilt/kaiser)
Hi,
Just saw this on google:
http://www.aftermarketcellular.com/ic/UNIJABRAA120S.html
Most new radios have a plug in the back for external CD or other audio, just connect this and you dont need an FM transmitter.
Good luck...
I have a Monster Icarplay for the ipod. I am wondering if there's any way of modding it to use on my kaiser. I know the ipod connecter is just a modified usb connector - so I am wondering there is some sort of adapter that goes from ipod connecter to regular usb. I don't think I can just snip off the end and solder in a reg. usb because there are controles on the ipod connecter plug. Any thoughts?

I'm browsing around trying to decide what unit to purchase. The thing I like about the Motorola is I do not have to plug it into my cigarette lighter (other than for a charge, of course).
But, I had purchased a Motorola speaker phone a couple years ago and the sound quality for the person on the other end was pretty bad. With this sound quality for me as the listener would probably be OK, as it would go through the radio.
Has anyone used one of these yet that can report back?
The positive feedback from Venturi on the Verizon one sounds good.

what I want to know is ...
how does it transmit to the FM wirelessly though ???
and if there's another radio nearby happened to be scanning stations ... will it also pick up my private conversation ??
I can understand when this is routed through the cigarette lighter plug ... but wireless ??? and they don't specify the type of FM radio ... so I just assumed any regular car FM stereo ...
anyone for answers ???
Good questions.
It seems to me that it transmits to the FM device via BlueTooth; then the FM device transmits to the radio over FM frequency.
And I assume that if someone in a car nearby (I don't think it will transmit very far) happens to tune the the same FM frequency you are using, that they in fact would pickup your conversations.
I would like to be able to have the bluetooth transmit my stereo to my radio, and if I have on a BT headset, have my conversations go there. But, I'm not sure that is possible.

[USEFULL INFORMATION] for those wanting FM transmitter and buetooth in car for HD2

Hey Fellas,
I would like to share with you some usefull information, I drive a lot during the day and at the same time i use my phone a lot. What i wanted is to be able to listen to the music (8GB of music) and at the same time reply to phone calls i receive on my HD2
Anyway I bought Griffin- I tripp Auto FM transmitter and i set the default station 103.7 (in Sydney) and I listen to all my music collection without any problem, the beauty about it is that you are also capable of receiveing and making call through the fm transmitter thus hearing people on your speakers. I was bit pessimiste about it due to the fact that i was worried that people will not hear me too well BUT TO THE OPPOSITE the sound is excellent both ways.
The beauty about the whole set us is you are not connected via bluetooth therefore saving the battery for other things
Anyway I recommend evryone who needs music and phone facility in their car tio get one of the Griffin-Itrip
cheers
Isn't the i trip iphone only?

definetly not 3.5mm jack output
no! itrip can be for any mp3 player too, it's called the itrip universal
http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/itrip-universal
I had used itrip many years ago, quality is quite bad, also depends on your car's antenna...
I just got the iTrip auto universal plus which works with any 3.5mm jack and changes the device as well. It's pretty good.

My HTC HD2 mod-shortened FM antenna

EDIT: found out if you put in a regular 3.5mm headphone, the FM transmitter should also work guess you can do it any way you want!
so let me get this right, if you get a 3.5mm jack off some headphones, i can plug that in and the radio will work?

Yeah, I just tried it on a Sony headset and an ipod headphone set and they both triggered the FM to work. I think the FM can be triggered with software to work but the reception will be crappy without extra wire coming out to catch the signal.
Great experiment ! Easy solution ! Can now uninstall all internet-radio apps and get my local radio station w/o headset.
Tx !
Personally I think it's just a gimmic to buy HTC's headset, don't fall for it guys! Use your own equipment that will sound better and fit more comfortably!
I could only pick up a couple of local stations like this, and we have a huge transmitter only a few miles away.
Went back to a full length set of headphones and did a rescan
and they were all back....
NW UK based.
The whole wire acts like an antenna. There is no dedicated antenna for FM. That's how FM works since it's short range and hig frequency unlike the older AM low freq signals which need a more specialised antenna.
For good FM reception, a good wire will suffice.
Nice i'll give it a try, but first thing i would like to know is how did you get your sound so high, been lookin every ware for a cab file or a hack, any info would be GR8

how to listen FM radio using a bluetooth headset on Android

Hi!
is there a way for that?
Thanks in advance...
You need a wired headset in order to listen to FM radio. the wire will work as antenna.
That's why a BT headset will never work for FM radio.

Only half true. Yes, wire works as antenna, but that doesnt mean that the radio will not get anything AT ALL without it. It's just gonna get like half of the available stations, some a little noisy may be. But it will work still. Especially true in urban areas where the signal is strong.
I speak from experience with my Sony Ericsson T715 which had exactly the same situation - FM radio which will only work if you have the headset plugged in. Turned out, simply changing a certain "1" to "0" in a certain file in the phone memory allowed the radio app to work without the headsets. Mind you, I never tried this hack, for certain reasons, but read more than enough feedbacks of it working.
Will not be surprised if it's simillar case wih HD2, where you just need to change a registry value under WinMo or some config file in Android.
is there somebody out there who can tell me how could I set it on Android...

there has to be masses willing to pay for this feature. come on developers.
for my situation i listen to my car radio and want any satnav voice instructions to interrupt the radio (just like a call does) and then resume to radio
or if the phone radio is enabled to bluetooth then i can listen to the phones radio over bluetooth and the satnav voice does talk over the radio
BUY a SonyEricsson MW600. It has it's own radio . It's not soo expensive as it was before when HBH-DS980 arrived...
Radio BT headset will just defeat the purpose of long-life battery. I cant find it any useful to charge my BT headset all the time
still looking for an answer :-(
1) Plug the earphones as antenna. It's needed if not you're not be able to receive any signal or will sound as hell.
2) Start the radio program
3) Route the audio to BT (try with a new app on the market named "Super BT Mono" which could route audio to bluetooth mono earpiece)

fm radio over blue tooth when using navigation software
So is there a solution?
I also would like to use the phone's fm radio over bluetooth so I can listen to music and have the navigation software interupt it when needed.
An internet radio is not an option. it stops all the time and is very exspensive in foreign countries.

Looking for a smartwatch that works as music player (via bluetooth)

Hello to everybody,
I'm looking for a smartwatch that could be paired with a couple of bluetooth earphones, acting as music player and that could works without a phone.
I found a lot of cheap device that has a TF (microsd) slot and that could be paired with bluetooth earphones, and this is good.
But I would like to have also Radio FM and I was unable to find a device that could work with bluetooth earphones because all the devices I found with radio FM needs to have earphones jack inserted because they act as antenna.
So I started looking for a device that could run app without a phone, something like "tune in radio", that streams music via data connection, but I'm not sure if someone has already developed something similar, I've seen that Samsung has created the Gear S that has a 3G and wifi connection but I'm not sure of what are its capabilities, if it could work alone (without a phone) for the task I need.
Does anybody knows if there's something that could fit my needs? (or mp3 stand alone with radio FM via bluetooth or mp3 with undependent streaming radio app)
If I could throw a bone...
I carry an iPod Nano 6G. Relatively cheap, doesn't have Bluetooth, but it has been my goto for music. I paid $10 for a stainless steel band, it has a week battery life typically, and its just a good device overall. If you're willing to compromise Bluetooth, it can't break the bank.
Sent from my 306SH using Tapatalk
Thank you, but I can't give up bluetooth, Nano was one of my first choice but it doesn't fit some of my requirements.
Probably some other little device like this small phone could be good. Does anybody knows it?
Basically any MTK6260 based smartwatch will do.
I listen to music at work straight from my GT08. Either via bt heaphones or via the sound system since it has a bluetooth receiver.
Yes but it also works with fm radio ?
All the reseller I contacted told me that in order to listen fm radio I have to plug earphones into the 3.5mm hole because earphones works as antenna.
Did you try to do it without
well, best I can think of is an actual headphone with built-in FM radio, kind of like the Sony MW1 - or if you prefer, there's sport-headphones with all kinds of options (SD card, FM radio, etc.) which don't require any kind of additional device/bluetooth/etc. and are pretty much just headphones with a wire between the two. Example: Sport Wireless+ by Jabra has FM radio.
problem is, that for FM radio you will always require SOME kind of antenna - if I remember correctly it has something to do with the wavelength of FM and needing a certain minimum antenna length to pick up the signal. In cases with no cable (e.g. big headphones (over-ear)), the antenna is built into the frame, while in-ear headphones require some kind of cable/wire (even if it's the one connecting the two headphones) to function as antenna.
I agree with you but I just received a pair of Plantronics beatfit bluetooth earphones, that are superbs in terms of quality, but that lack the embedded radio FM as Jabra ones!
About the antenna, it's strange, because I think that if it's possible to integrate it inside a couple of bluetooth earphones it should be possible to do the same also in an mp3 player or in a smartwatch, don't you think?

Problem is basically that the shorter the antenna (compared to the actual wavelength) the worse the signal (more or less, google "FM antenna length" - or anything similar - for the specifics involved). And considering that FM has MUCH larger wavelength than any other frequency used in a phone (iirc BT is more or less 12cm, FM is 3m), having an antenna small enough to fit in a watch or phone COULD work, but the signal would be really bad - so you'd have to make the receiver REALLY sensitive and probably use quite a bit of power.
Kinda like the difference between turning on a world clock radio with & without extending the antenna - it'll "work" with the antenna collapsed (and maybe even pick up a station or two if you're lucky), but it'll work much better with the antenna extended.
FYI: The larger the wavelength (and thus lower the frequency), the further the signal travels & less interference from objects in between - reason why in the middle of nowhere between trees and mountains you'll pick up an AM (approx. 1kHz, 100+m wavelength) signal much better than an FM signal (approx. 98kHz, 3m wavelength). Same reason as to why the lower mobile bands (700-800) are more suited for large area coverage than teh higher frequency ones (2100, etc.).
NOTE: You'll have to forgive me for any (probable) errors in specific numbers - it's been a LOT of years since I last used/checked them
addendum...
Ok, apparently a full-length set of headphones (to some extent) isn't even needed nowadays - basically phone makers being lazy. Check this thread over @ androidcentral.com about someone getting the radio (not through BT though) working by sticking a cut-off 3.5mm jack stub (of an old pair of headphones).
No test on how WELL it receives various stations, but at least something is picked up... now all you need to do is modify the ROM so it'll allow BT broadcast even with a 3.5mm jack plugged in :silly:
Or maybe (as suggested in the thread), plugging in a standalone BT transmitter into teh 3.5mm jack?
