Who Has an Unlocked Bootloader? - Nexus One General

Hey guys,
With All this Warranty talk, the people who unlocked your bootloader. Do you regret it? Was the warranty worth sacrificing for custom roms? I want to unlock it but at the same time I keep getting these paranoid thoughts that I'm gonna need the warranty later on. WTF. Any help?

You can install custom roms without unlock bootloader. I have evil nxsense rom installed in my N1 without unlock my bootloader.

HTC honors the warranty even with the bootloader unlocked; I can't say that I've needed to make a claim myself, but that's the consensus from majority of members on this board. So, my advice is just go for it.
I had the same doubts as you, but you won't regret it

Agree with this. Although I've never had to make a claim either.

I unlocked mine as soon as I pulled it from the box back in January 2010. I have had no regrets about it at all. I have never needed warranty service, though I wouldn't hesitate to call HTC for a hardware related issue. If something went horribly wrong with a ROM flash or a radio upgrade, that would be my own fault and I would look into buying a new phone. But I wouldn't try to BS HTC to make them pay for my screw-up.

I have made two claims with my unlocked bootloader. Each has been hassle free and quick. Oh, and cost me nothing.
First, a few months ago for dust under the screen, repaired and sent back in 4 days.
Second, which was last week for power button issues. They received, repaired, and shipped back in one day. I got it back the next.
HTC is quietly brilliant.

thanks guys! i may actually unlock the baseband than.
is unlocking the baseband more beneficial than just doing a root without unlocking?
btw, so you guys think its better to safer to send it in and get it repaired if you have a unlocked baseband than the riskier "swap" (when they send u a new one and you send your old one in) method?

hey, did they send it back to you with a locked bootloader?

First time they relocked it.
Second time, they left it unlocked.

ROOT is fine

I don't see any point in unlocking boot loader while you can root the phone and do whatever you want. the only thing you can't directly do is to flash a partition usion bootloader commands but you still can do it if you use "flash_img" command in ClockworkMod Recovery (on the adb shell). I install different roms and I am on CM7 now.

I unlocked mine without wanting to. I flashed modaco rom and it just unlocked my boot loader. but there is supposed to be a way of locking it again. it's somewhere on xda...

Yeah, I like posters that don't know what they post.
1) No ROM can unlock the bootloader. User has to do it and the system has to ask for permission.
2) Once unlocked, it can't be locked, only by HTC.
To the OP: I've unlocked my bootloader long before "non-unlocking" way has been found. Never cared for it since, didn't need the warranty, and it's going to expire soon anyway.

Yes mine unlocked, and I have no reason to regret it, as my phone is a freak that can be locked again.
Worth doing in my opinion, and even if I couldn't lock it again, I still wouldn't regret it.

Mine is locked, but there are 2 goods reasons to unlock the bootloader:
1. Once the bootloader is unlocked, you always have a rooted phone. The next ota won't relock it.
2. You have more options to fix a potentially bricked phone.
I'm thinking about doing it for these reasons, plus it seems like HTC still honour the warranty.

I unlocked my bootloader because the warranty was gone anyway. Put the nexus into the washing mashine . Somehow it survived (Bluetooth, radio and camera gone). It actually was pretty tough. after about 10minutes in the mashine (60°C) the screen was still having fun inside the mashine.

1. Well, if you wanna update ota, you don't have reason to root your phone in the first place.
2. what more options exactly you have? simple, do not mess with HBOOT and Recovery partitions, and ur safe.
My opinion, use oneclickroot and don't risk it, cause HTC support behave deferentially now!

Repaired N1 comes back with re-locked bootloader

I just got my phone back and they re-locked the bootloader, updated the radio to 5.08.00.04 and updated the hboot to 0.35.0017.
I thought it wasn't possible to re-lock the bootloader.
I guess I have some work to do.

I bet that is what they did. I sent the unit back on 12/22, they got it on 12/23 and sent it back on the same day. I got it back today 12/24. It is the same shell because I has a full skinomi skin on it. It does look like they took off the screen protector and put it back on because it had alot of air bubbles under it. Anyhow, I just unlocked it, flashed Amon 2.0 then flashed MM gingerbread v.10. Gingerbread looks great.
Actually I think the first thing they do as part of their testing is to reset the phone back to defaults - including re-locking the bootloader.
I've sent mine in twice. The first time they could not replicate the problem so they just sent it back.
Both times it came back fully wiped with a re-locked bootloader.
Their Kung-Fu is strong indeed
I sent mine back for a broken screen and they relocked my bootloader. They reflash everything some how
I would guess that the first thing HTC do it to get a standard image on the phone and benchmark it, so that know exactly what they are working with...

HTC service will just replace the motherboard.
So its why you got wiped and relocked phone.
For leaks preventing, they dont have any tools for work with hboot or radio.
The old motherboard must be sended to head office, where it will be repaired and used again or just destroyed.
Actually its the ways they did with WM devices, but i dont think HTC changed it for android

don't that change also the IMEI #?
It would change the IMEI, and probably it's serial number too.
HTC can set S-OFF to relock the bootloader.

As I said in my earlier post ... the first time I sent my phone in they sent it back because they could not replicate the problem. The bootloader was re-locked even though they did not do any repairs on the phone.
It is part of the testing process. They need to make sure they are 100% stock before they run their tests.
I think the reason why the bootloader can't be relocked is because nobody has the original SPL. Could be wrong, though.

The SPL in the retail phones lacks the oem lock command altogether. It only exists in the larger SPL in the holiday phones that won't fit on the retail version's NAND.
Not true, mine is retail and is S-OFF (see link in my sig).
Unfortunately it seems there is no way to use it to help others though.
My phone came back with the same IMEI# and serial #. It does not look like they changed the motherboard.

Nope, you're pretty screwed. When unlocking the bootloader, the phone tells you that your warranty is now void.
The nexus S has a oem bootloader unlock. In other words, samsung will not hold the fact that bootloader is unlocked against you. You do need to get rid of miui and get back to stock. There is a thread showing how to do this and provides the files you need. I'll see if I can find it for you.

I said that because I was screwed over by Samsung.
I just use cwm to flash the latest ota rom then locked the bootloader and reboot.
no issues from samsung regarding voided warranty. Perhaps you had sent it in with the bootloader unlocked?
Just use rom managers stock 2.3.3 and flash it... then lock bootloader by the instructions provided a post up
Just a heads up... same thing happened to a guy and he sent it in.for a speaker that wasn't working ... he waited over a month to get his phone back rather then them sending him a new one or refurbished

good luck! make sure the bootloader says locked, and there is no super user app and no custom recovery!!!

Relocking the Bootloader

Hey guys!
I just bought a Nexus 4 a couple days ago... you can imagine my desire to unlock the bootloader and root my phone, I think...
I do have one concern, though. My last phone was HTC One X. I unlocked it, of course, but relocking the bootloader kinda got me in trouble. When bootloader showed up on the screen it stated "RELOCKED" thus my warranty was void. I would like to know if such thing could happen with my Nexus4 device, since I wouldn't want to loose my 2-year warranty in case I decide to sell it somewhere along the way.
Cheers!

One Click Root?

Hey Im getting the Moto X Pure Editon and I was wondering if there are any viable one click root methods, or a way to root without unlocking the bootloader. I have read that one certain (very questionable) method that XDA is against (and rightly so) can be used, but I have no plans on going that route. Im certainly not new to unlocking a bootloader and am not against it. Ive had the original Moto X Developer Edition, and currently have the Nexus 6, but the whole void the warranty deal I would like to avoid if at all possible. If I could get root and use titanium backup and ad free I could be fine with that. That being said is there a way to root without unlocking the bootloader. And is there something like on the old Droid Razr where you could install a recovery while the bootloader is still locked. Yes I know google is my friend and I have looked but haven't seen anything. So my assumption is I will probably have to unlock the bootloader. But I did want to ask before I jumped and unlocked it, because if anyone would know I know I could find out on here.

With the hassles Motorola gives people trying to get warranty support after unlocking the bootloader, it would actually be quite beneficial.
Unlocking bootloader does not void warranty completely!!! Software issues caused by the user are indeed not under warrenty anymore. Hardware related issues are.. I had 2 times screen blemishes and both times my screen got replaced for free. Great service from motorola.

I'd stick with the tested and tried methods. One click options have the potential for opening the doorway to unwanted content.....
Chainfire's supersu has been around for a long time.
Unlocking the bootloader is a must if you want to root on this phone... ATM anyway and I doubt it will change. I used to think one click root was the way to go too but once again, there are potentially many things that can go wrong so knowing the tried and true manual ways is always best. Knowing how to recover from botched attempts has allowed me to bring my phone back from soft bricks several times.

Looking to buy Verizon HTC 10, but had a few questions (Root? Bootloader unlock?)

I was browsing the threads here and it seems the verizon htc 10 can be rooted, s-off, and bootloader unlocked via the Sunshine program. However, can I do it myself or do I have to mail the phone to someone?
Also, does the device have to have a certain build # to be able to root, soff, and unlocked? As I will ask the person I am selling what build they are using if so.
Thank you!
Hi,
I just got this phone yesterday and just went through this process. Upon immediately getting home from Verizon, I ran sunshine and it worked right away. I believe my firmware was something low like 1.19 or so. From what it sounds like though is that sunshine will work at even more recent firmware versions. Sunshine is just an app you can run yourself. All you have to do is enter your credit card and it will run. Hope this little bit of info helps.
Sunshine will work until Android N.
Verizon won't update us again til N
Pulled same crap with M9.

Opt for s-off locked. No need to do unlocked.

Just to reinforce what others have said, the phone can be rooted with any current Verizon firmware versions, and you will be required to run Sunshine for S-Off/Locked status. As has been said Sunshine is a breeze to use and the developers certainly deserve the mandatory donation, lol. Though the carriers were quick to lose interest in the 10 I've been very happy with the purchase all around, I would definitely recommend it as a daily driver that's fairly safe to tinker with (due to s-off)!
Yes, you can do it by yourself but I haven't tried it yet. It is a kinda long procedure and in between the process if you press the wrong key or did something wrong then you end up with bricking your phone. Rest of all you can read here :- http://www.tekpirates.com/verizon-htc-10-unlock-bootloader-root-system-gain-s-off-install-cwm-twrp-recovery/.
