Hey guys,
With All this Warranty talk, the people who unlocked your bootloader. Do you regret it? Was the warranty worth sacrificing for custom roms? I want to unlock it but at the same time I keep getting these paranoid thoughts that I'm gonna need the warranty later on. WTF. Any help?
You can install custom roms without unlock bootloader. I have evil nxsense rom installed in my N1 without unlock my bootloader.

HTC honors the warranty even with the bootloader unlocked; I can't say that I've needed to make a claim myself, but that's the consensus from majority of members on this board. So, my advice is just go for it.
I had the same doubts as you, but you won't regret it

Agree with this. Although I've never had to make a claim either.
I unlocked mine as soon as I pulled it from the box back in January 2010. I have had no regrets about it at all. I have never needed warranty service, though I wouldn't hesitate to call HTC for a hardware related issue. If something went horribly wrong with a ROM flash or a radio upgrade, that would be my own fault and I would look into buying a new phone. But I wouldn't try to BS HTC to make them pay for my screw-up.

I have made two claims with my unlocked bootloader. Each has been hassle free and quick. Oh, and cost me nothing.
First, a few months ago for dust under the screen, repaired and sent back in 4 days.
Second, which was last week for power button issues. They received, repaired, and shipped back in one day. I got it back the next.
HTC is quietly brilliant.

btw, so you guys think its better to safer to send it in and get it repaired if you have a unlocked baseband than the riskier "swap" (when they send u a new one and you send your old one in) method?

hey, did they send it back to you with a locked bootloader?
First time they relocked it.
Second time, they left it unlocked.

I don't see any point in unlocking boot loader while you can root the phone and do whatever you want. the only thing you can't directly do is to flash a partition usion bootloader commands but you still can do it if you use "flash_img" command in ClockworkMod Recovery (on the adb shell). I install different roms and I am on CM7 now.
I unlocked mine without wanting to. I flashed modaco rom and it just unlocked my boot loader. but there is supposed to be a way of locking it again. it's somewhere on xda...

Yeah, I like posters that don't know what they post.
1) No ROM can unlock the bootloader. User has to do it and the system has to ask for permission.
2) Once unlocked, it can't be locked, only by HTC.
To the OP: I've unlocked my bootloader long before "non-unlocking" way has been found. Never cared for it since, didn't need the warranty, and it's going to expire soon anyway.
Yes mine unlocked, and I have no reason to regret it, as my phone is a freak that can be locked again.
Worth doing in my opinion, and even if I couldn't lock it again, I still wouldn't regret it.

Mine is locked, but there are 2 goods reasons to unlock the bootloader:
1. Once the bootloader is unlocked, you always have a rooted phone. The next ota won't relock it.
2. You have more options to fix a potentially bricked phone.
I'm thinking about doing it for these reasons, plus it seems like HTC still honour the warranty.

I unlocked my bootloader because the warranty was gone anyway. Put the nexus into the washing mashine . Somehow it survived (Bluetooth, radio and camera gone). It actually was pretty tough. after about 10minutes in the mashine (60°C) the screen was still having fun inside the mashine.

1. Well, if you wanna update ota, you don't have reason to root your phone in the first place.
2. what more options exactly you have? simple, do not mess with HBOOT and Recovery partitions, and ur safe.
My opinion, use oneclickroot and don't risk it, cause HTC support behave deferentially now!

1. (Disregard this one. Didn't realize this was a Verizon exclusive.)
2. When I first get it should I OTA it, so it doesn't disable the possibility of unlocking it?
3. Is this phone supported by many developers?

What version did they patch the BL Unlock method? Cause when I get it I won't be OTA'ing. I will unlock this phone.

You will most certainly be able to unlock the phone with the latest update using either cellzealots method or mine, but the bootloader will remain locked disabling the ability to use custom roms. If you get one on the 98.17.66 (?) Software your good to use Matt's Droid RAZR M Utility to unlock the bootloader yet so dont take the update, unlock the bl and do what youd like

stock, this phone is great (not sure about the latest release - although, I think it was just to enable a security patch to prevent folks from unlocking the device). so, essentially, if your version is prior to May 2013, then you'll be able to unlock with current methods - otherwise, you'll have to HOPE for someone to create a new method for unlocking or for the devs to make their ROMs flashable via safestrap.
I'm pretty sure you can still root though.

right - do not accept the OTA if your baseband is prior to May 2013. if it reads May 2013, then you've already got the latest, and you're locked until someone really smart decides to crack it.
if you wanted to, go into the store, have them break out the device, and check the baseband.

Closest one to me I think is down in Pittsburgh. Only a 30 minute drive, not too bad. I guess I could do that, if I decide to go with this. I'm either going with this, or the Razr HD.

I have both to play with and I have to say I like the feel and size of the RAZR M moreso over the bulk of the HD. won over my Galaxy Nexus which hates me now lol

Ok, as long as I can root. I think I can live without the custom ROMs... maybe. I plan to get one used, hopefully no OTA but whatever.

So what are the changes? I know there is more than just camera quality and pausing videos. they lock down anything? 4.3 to 4.4 took away my tethering and a few other things. what did they lock this time

Haven't had a chance to check yet. At first glance the only thing I've noticed is it seems a little quicker.
Does this re-lock the bootloader if you paid for the unlock code?

wasnt able to install it, even after reverting to stock firmware through fastboot flash files.
Edit: tried it one last time, got it to sucessfully install, running 4.4.4 now

I'm also interested in this. Though, I may just wait, and use this opportunity to flash a stable 4.4.4 based ROM instead. Don't want to lose root or bootloader unlock.

I've looked everywhere to try to find how to unlock and root. Can you show me where you found out how to do this and does it still stay prepaid if you do?

When the new cell unlock law goes into effect Motorola should have to give out unlock codes for the XT1028..
I Doubt it. Seeing as the Moto G was manufactured before the law went into effect.

I read nothing in the bill that prohibits the unlocking of any device manufactured prior to the enactment date of the legislation. Specifically, the bill allows unlocking at the direction of the owner of the device:
(c) Unlocking at Direction of Owner.--Circumvention of a
technological measure that restricts wireless telephone handsets or
other wireless devices from connecting to a wireless telecommunications
network--
(1)(A) as authorized by paragraph (3) of section 201.40(b)
of title 37, Code of Federal Regulations, as made effective by
subsection (a); and
(B) as may be extended to other wireless devices pursuant
to a determination in the rulemaking conducted under subsection
(b); or

I flashed stock Verizon 4.4.2 firmware and then took 4.4.4 update via ota.
Tired of flashing nightlies and custom roms with all their bugs and issues.
Glad to be back on stock and re-rooted with TWRP installed.

Yeah, kept getting systemui force closes after installing a few things, and usually while listening to my podcasts. i'll probably venture back into roms once they hammer out that issue

I hear you. The only reason I used custom roms was because Verizon had not yet pushed the 4.4.4 ota and now that they have and I have it I have no need for customs roms. Actually I find the 4.4.4 update to be quite a surprise. The camera is much improved imo and the rom seems to be a bit more quicker than before. All-in-all I am glad I reverted back to stock rom and I plan on staying with stock.
P.S. To my understanding Android L is coming later this year to the moto G.

Attached are modified factory roms that will flash an at&t or t-mobile phone to an unlocked phone. This means no more bloatware and in my case much better handoff between the lte bands.
These images reuse the carrier bootloader (I'm working on it) but everything else from the radio to the rom is from the unlocked priv.
Version: AAJ919
AT&T -> unlocked hybrid: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298947044
T-Mobile -> unlocked hybrid: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767153589
Directions: Unzip files. Hold power and volume down until phone reboots to fastboot. Launch flashall.bat. Follow instructions. This WILL delete your data so have a backup or don't I'm your boss. Wait. Done.
As usual I am not responsible for you bricking your phone. That being said even if the wrong file is flashed the phone gets stuck at the fastboot screen where you can flash the right file.

This does not unlock your phone, this is an unlocked rom with no carrier bloatware.
You must already have an unlocked phone. If your phone is paid off call your carrier and ask for the pin.

I haven't bought a priv yet. But i came across a killer deal for a VZ model that's I'd be using on tmo. I'm going to be snagging it. But will test for sure and let you know. I am just trying to read up on the phone before ordering it on how to get rid of bloat and whatnot without root. Thank you very much for making the file.

I tried it and it worked. However, once it boots it will install a software update which takes you back to the bloated VZW version. Perhaps there's a way to block that update?

Totally possible. If we had root just modify the host file and set the verizon server update ip to localhost. You should be able to install DNS66 and do something similar. This will take digging on your end to figure out what the update IP is though.
I have an ATT Priv, so if I flash this I'll get next time OTA from BlackBerry instead of ATT? Saw the one above with the Verizon update and went back to bloated version.
Reporting back in to verify that it worked flawlessly on both at&t and t-mobile variants I have. Now if only we could get root lol

I have an ATT branded Priv which got unlocked from ATT directly and has successfully installed this ROM. It works perfectly without any ATT bloatwares, but this built is old and when I check for system update it shows my system is up to date. However the most recent built for unlocked factory image is AAL202 according to the blackberry official reload software website.
So does this ROM OTA updates via ATT server or directly from Blackberry server?

AT&T runs a newer version of android then the international. If you want stockish android with no carrier bloat go international.

With the very recent Verizon Priv update can the de-bloated image be updated?
If you intend to do basically anything with this phone I highly recommend unlocking the bootloader and leaving it in that state always. Especially do this before accepting any kind of beta ota because you might not be able to roll back without bootloader unlock. Do not for any reason try locking your bootloader again unless a rom you are using specifically says to do so like Copperhead or you may end up semi or hardbricking your device. Recent Non Beta OTA Update also Ruined the Phone. Since the Device was Locked it turned into a Useless Brick Now.
So its Strongly advisable to keep the Developer Mode on with USB Debugging ON and Allow Boot-loader Unlock Option ON at-least.

This is mostly the problem I'm referring to as I've now seen like 5 people who are stuck with a broken ota or are stuck on beta with no way off
I bought a second hand Pixel phone(small version) this summer and it came with locked bootloader. But i live in Russia now, so i dont use verizon. Is there any way to unlock bootloader on verizon phone? Android 8.1 last release

Doesn't matter where you are, but there is a post or two on here talking about a guy who can unlock it using remote access and installing flexihub on your machine. If you wanna try it make a windows VM real quick and wipe ur phone after you back everything up that you need

today，i spand 150￥ on chinese Taobao.he let my 8.1 verzon pixel unlock,its amazing,i found all bbs ,only fine one way to unlock，our phone need S-OFF S-OFF S-OFF（importance say third）s-off need our chinese is king-card，i dont know what speak in english（Key words：S-ON S-OFF htc） through it to return android 7.1 （sorry my english is pool，but i think you can understand，wish you an early unlock）

A misparsed or improperly fetched OTA can semi-brick a phone yes. It can also happen when the manufacturer or carrier push a broken update. Both scenarios have happened many times with lg and Samsung phones for example
