Gaming using the hardware keyboard - EVO Shift 4G General

I've been playing classic games (snesoid, genesoid, nesoid, gameboid) using the Shift's hardware keyboard and I have to say I'm really impressed. I was upset at first when I found out the shift's d-pad was on the right side of the keyboard but found you can map the buttons WASZ for dpad and it works really really well. So far i've only found a handful of games that were difficult to play with the Shift's keyboard. Works amazing for RPG type games and I was even able to play Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country really well. Anyone else give gaming a spin using the hardware keyboard?

Not yet,but thats because i havent got my phone yet. Thats one of the reasons i wanted the shift. I want to see how psx4droid runs on it!!

I've run genesis, snes, gameboy, and nes games with sound and they all have run great, i'm gonna test out psx4droid right now, i'll report back.

It works great, I've never had a problem with the D-pad being on the left or right, both work great for me.
I tried out Silent hill on pxs4droid, it ran smooth, but had a few graphics and sounds issues.

After putting psx4droid through its paces I was kind of disappointed. I think lack of an analog stick has a lot to do with it but the controls just seemed very lacking. Also all of the games I tried had a noticeable amount of lag/stutter that alone wouldn't have been that distracting but combined with the underwhelming controls I found any fast paced games to be unplayable. RPGs however are mint.

Playing games where the controls are on the screen are a pain in the butt.

Like everyone else, I found all the games I've played so far to be very easy with the Shift's keyboard. Imagine how much easier it'll be if they someone makes a Game Gripper for the Shift

I did get an email back from them about that, and they said that they will be working on it shortly.

Gaming on HTC Shift?

So i was thinking of buying this really cool device, mostly for surfing, watching youtube and movies on the run and to controll my email. BUt one thing i'm also very fond of is gaming. So i'm of caurse wondering what kind of games you will be able to play on the shift.
I was thinking playing my old favorites wich i think could suit Shift very well, The Baldurs Gate serie, Icewind Dale serie and Planescape Torment. How well do you think the shift could handle these games?
Diablo I & II
Starcraft
Fallout I & II
Myst
Bring back the classics baby.
your series will play nicely. I also played neverwinter nights on it
other classic games on shift
resident evil 1, 2, and 3 plays well on my shift.
I also use EPSXE to play psx games and they work really great.
Thanks for the replies it sounds great!
I don't recommend playing games on this device
it is designed for doing business on it that's why they didn't deliver it with high VGA card
Ultimate hand held
I don't really like PSP or DS, handheld gaming PC was my dream since childhood, so that's where Shift comes in handy, all my favorites from 90s come in, I just wish to solve Space Empires 5 touchscreen issue someday, also reading rotated manga is a lot of fun too.

oh... I like them.. but it's not perfect sure... at home I use a usb keyboard+mouse... (logitech MX3000 or something like that) and it's a real pleasure
Worms armageddon is playable when u disable the gsensor joystick ... tried to play iit with that but its pain
I play Mugen games on this with a Xbox 360 controller and adapter. Works like a charm
Halo works fairly well. After installing from the original CD, and then running the update progam under the programs halo installtion directory, the game runs without the need for the CD present, which is a must for a UMPC.
With minimum graphics settings, at 800x480 it runs pretty well, I play it with a USB Xbox 360 controller.
Let's Talk Really Old School
How 'bout X-Com? Anyone tried that? I had problems with everything getting pushed to the top inch of the screen on my Dell Mini 9. I'm thinking in 800 x 400 X-Com might work on a Shift.

Psx4droid Compatibility Thread Droid on HD2

Hi all,
I did a search and noticed there wasn't a thread dedicated to Psx4droid users on the HD2 running android. So i decided to start one, to list the games I have tried so far.
(btw, I have a nexus one also and these games didnt want to run on my nexus one and they ran fine on my HD2. =] )
Im running FroyoStone Sense 3.2.7
ChuckyDroidRom
Psx4droid 1.7
16gb class 2 memory card.
Brave Fencer Musashi- Ran pretty decent (.bin)
Mega Man Legends - Ran pretty decent (.bin)
Rival Schools - Lags (.bin)
Remember sharing is caring =D.
seriously no1 else is running psx4droid on their hd2?
I have a few games that I have been playing. I think the biggest problem with this is people really don't want to affiliate themselves with potentially illegal activities.
Anyway here is my list:
Final Fantasy VII: Runs ok, better with audio disabled
Final Fantasy Tactics: Runs great
Gran Turismo 2: So laggy pretty much unplayable
Einhander: Plays fine
Xenogears: Plays fine
Chrono Cross: Plays fine
I just boot back to WM and use fpsece. Much better speed and compatibility
xenogears? really ? how far have you gotten in that game so far?? no problems??
the fpsce emulator looks sweet and all. but what about on screen control? I have only read great reviews with the msi bluetooth gaming controller.
Fpsece has better on-screen controls than psx4droid.... much more customizable. Or you can just use a ps3 controller.

Hey guys, good news, the newest vr, 1.7 released a few days ago, has fixed ffvii sound issues, it sounds perfect!
Was like playing a different game with out the right battle ending music.
Currently using BluTopia v.6
PSX 1.7
Playing Breathe of Fire IV with audio studder sometimes. Havent been able to figure why yet. I 've downloaded xenogears, but that lags like hell. Still trying to get accustomed to the on screen controls.
Its absolute crap, all the games that work perfectly on Fpsece, dont work on psx4droid. It is a big joke, total waste of time im affraid.
It makes sense that fpsece would have better compatibility.... its been developed for what? 8 years now I believe. Psx4droid only for maybe 8 months.

I don't think it's the illegal they are worried about, it's the fact that it's a touch screen phone without hardware game button which kills the fun...for me anyway...
its true that fspce has been around for along time. I remember loading ff7 on my dell axim pda. 500mhz at the time. Psx4droid is actually running almost all the games im throwing at it. except GT2, it gets stuck at the disclaimer screen.
I've been experiencing some very nasty fps frops on alundra and other games no matter what build I used (nand,sd). Is it like this for everyone? Also a lot of touchscreen problems like buttons randomly pressed etc
I've got V3 for PSX4Droid and I'm having a few issues with Metal Gear Solid, she's a bit slow, slow framerate and stuttering sound, anyone else have experience with this?

Evo as gaming device

I was curious as to how many are using their Evo as a gaming device as well as its other uses. I started off playing some of the simple arcade and puzzle style games but I have recently been playing a couple of fps games from gameloft and I realize that there is a lot of potential for the evo if the developers will continue with it.
I'm playing home run battle 3d and a couple of other games.

Yeah I have been playing quite a bit of old NES games with nesoid.
CM6 + wiimote + wii steering wheel + gps dash mount + dremel + gorilla glue = emulator fun. I have been mostly playing old SNES games, but I have a 40 minute bus ride to & from work so I have to kill the time somehow.
Until I saw the demo for NOVA and Sandstorm I never realized that 3d gaming had come so far for android. Those are the 2 main games that I am playing right now.
It's perfect for RPG's which is my favorite type of games. Play final fantasy tactics as we speak. I never owned a ps1 myself so theres a lot of rpg games for me to play.
Am I the only who likes Meteor Blitz? It's just about my favorite handheld game of all time! Like a Geometry Wars mobile.
PSXDroid is pretty nice. I continually encounter graphical glitches though, which is utterly annoying.
SandStorm is neat, Nova is a fun FPS as well. Pretty much most of Gamelofts releases are enjoyable. Well, minus Assassin's Creed.
There's a guy working on Starcraft for Android, but I think the projects gone dead in the water.
Finally, Quake III on Android. Or, Kwaak3
Also, this may not be the best place to post anything about iOS, because I know quick people can be to hate on the iPhone. But Steve Jobs aside, who else is impressed by Epic Game's Infinity Blade and Mutant Bash TV by Id running on the Rage iOS engine?
I'm totally floored by it to be honest. Had no idea a 1GHz processor with 512MB RAM could achieve graphics on this level.
It's only a matter of time before a company creates an engine like this for Android Devices. Development is either already in the works or right around the corner.
*Cough* PSP Phone *Cough*
The prospects are incredible! The only thing that bugs me is that I use to play my old GameBoys till the battery died when I was out and about. It will just really suck if I do the same with my EVO. That would put my day dead in the water if I didn't have a back up battery or wall outlet near by....
I am waiting patiently for oooecao to release their games!

Those iOS games are insane, I can't wait till we have them on Android. Epic has already demoed their Unreal Engine on Android so we will definitely have some sick games coming soon.
BTW, what ROM/theme are you running in the pic in your sig?

I know, they just need to come out with a decent controller for handheld devices. I almost want to go out and pick up a WiiMote just for my EVO. I have a PS3 controller but I've read that it will probably never happen because of technicalities with bluetooth between the two. I use my PS3 Controller to play Halo on my Netbook, so much fun! Makes airplane flights a breeze.
Just put a vice grip on a pad with a few buttons and put on a MicroUSB connector with an input on the pad for charging and call it done.
I keep reading about people whom have tested some of these Rage iOS games complaining that the controls blow. Especially Mutant Bash TV, it's tilt shift. I mean REALLY!? I tend to get p'd off at DoodleJump, let alone an FPS.
Stock ROM, unREVOked. Theme is custom.
Better off with a epic, you got the keyboard for controls and better GPU.
which is my problem... I don't use my phone for gaming, so it has no use for me lol

Lol, 4 of my friends recently jumped on to the Epic from TP2's (we all get the same phones, its kinda wierd) But i have an Evo. I play games on mine and its pretty good, but i tell them that games play better on the Epic due to the GPU/CPU and none of them play games, haha.
I got the usual great android games on plus, snesoid, nesoid, gensoid, psx4droid. The emulators are much better when rooted with a kernel that allows for better multi touch,(I'm currently on kings bfs11). I have hundreds games just between the emulators. I would consider psx4droid unplayable unless u had such a kernel. The biggest problem with playing the games is the lack of better multi touch, and thats y I will never b unrooted again.
Swyped from my Evo
they need to change up the controllers. Instead of using the forward, back, left, right motions on the screen, use the gyroscope to do those, and then in the left hand have the movement of the gun, and in the right hand, have the shooting or w/e.
Has anyone here tried Heavy Gunner?
I've been on a real gaming spree ever since I got the Evo!
Super K.O Boxing is really nice
SpeedX 3D is my favorite!
N.O.V.A was a b*t*h to get working, but it's by far the most graphically intense game.
Caligo Chaser is alright if you like more cartoony RPGs. The best part of the game is that when you adjust your gear it visually reflects on the character, lots of choices too!
Fruit Ninja is a fun, friendly style, potentially competitive style game
I just tried Meteor Blitz, thanks for the recommendation! I do wish the movement controls were less sensitive however.
Android is a fantastic platform for gaming, unfortunately it's not the only one and developers are limited
I tried a couple of the emulators but the game rom's I downloaded showed the game on a tiny screen and the controls did not work well at all. I guess I need to try some different games roms. Sandstorm is as graphically intensive as NOVA if not more so. I tried Avatar but the gameplay was a little confusing for me at times. Bottom line is that android is a great gaming platform and the Evo is a good hard device for gaming. I have a kindle and a zuneHD and was getting ready to get a psp. Now the Evo is truly an all in one device for me. It will do what all of those will do. Sure it uses a lot of battery but I would rather switch batteries during the day than to cary 3 or 4 devices and chargers when I travel.
MMORPG: Pocket Legends. That thang was just released today.
?
so why is it so hard to get Need for speed shift? why not in the market? why are there no good games in the market? on my old iphone i played many awesome games like nfsshift, street fighter 4, fifa soccer, chaos rings most of all Grand theft Auto chinatown wars. when i look in the market, there a bunch of crappy games, i mean common no words with friends or scrabble or bejeweled? my opinion, get a 64 gb ipod touch, you get your games and great music integration with itunes, plus 32gb extra possible storage. and its thin. i love my evo but no-matter what mods i do to it its not good at graphic intensive stuff, i cant even run the ocean waves wallpaper without it choppin like Jackie chan.
p.s. also looked for pocket legends, nothing in market for that either

The games that are made for the xperia play are crap but you can run a lot of emulators on it that work really great with the hardware keys.
yes the emulators are great on the play
with a great gamepad
the games on the xperia play are just as good as on any other android phone
while there are better spec phones out there
the games for them can run just as good as on ours with chainfire3d
Lol ya except they cam play them without staring at fingers ad thumbs and only being able to see a small portion of the screen. Seriously though tell your friend if he likes game he will destroy everyone who doesnt have a play in multiplayer.

I agree and also disagree . This phone has a nice big screen and playing the touchscreen games off the droid market works as well as on any other phone out at the minute. The game pad is just an added extra for me. I enjoy/play with the emulators & fpse alot but even if you forget the gamepad it is still a good phone.
After rooting mine and freezing the bloat. Nothing i have thrown @ the phone has caused it any trouble apart from some fpse games, but thats the same with most phones even dual cores ones. Nothing is perfect but this phone does an above average job as a normal phone with the added bonus of amazing game play on emulators or any game that supports the game pad.

I do agree it is a good phone but they should have put a much nicer screen on it. My Iphone 2G had a nicer screen. The Play's screen is impossible to use in sunlight. It's just a bit of a shame. Other things lacking would be HD video recording and a top of the range camera. But don't get me wrong, it's still good and I love it.
ps. what have you froze mate, just rooted myself cos I was sick of the phone stuttering and general choppiness on the likes of Gameloft games. Looking for ways to improve performance.

The Good -
- Hardware Buttons work GREAT with emulators. Honestly this is an emulators fan dreams come true.
- Hardware buttone work GREAT with Gameloft games. You think they are good on the iphone? They are 100 times better on the Play.
- Android Market Games are starting to work pretty good with the Play. Lots of games support the D Pad even if they dont mention it.
The Bad -
- Auto Brightness still cant be disabled as a stock feature.
- Low RAM means sometimes games stutter a little bit. (This is hardly an issue, but if you look close you can see it in some games, so it's worth mentioning)
- More games need to start appearing
Conclusion -
I personally hate using touchscreen for games. My finger prodding on the glass gets completely agitated to the point it drives me insane. The hardware buttons as controllers is an awesome feature.
You get all the Android software working excellently as you would on any Android phone.
It is a solid gaming phone, but does have room for improvement. The screen has an excellent display, but it's not as good as some phones. The auto brightness is a part of this reason.
Battery Life is decent. However it's unlikely you can last 2 days without charging. You will need to charge every night.
Speakers are very decent. The loudest on a phone i have ever heard.
Gameloft games are cheap and plentiful. Forget almost every other developer though, decent games other than Gameloft games are almost non-existent.
Basically if you love gaming and enjoy Gameloft + Emulators, then this phone is most definatley for you. If you dont care about gaming onphone and just want a quick touchscreen game every now and again, then go for something else. Either an iPhone or a powerful Tegra 2 chipset.
Gamer's Phone
The obvious reason to get this phone is the controls.
Basically, if you game on your phone, get the Play. If not, get something else. It really is that simple.
The controls rock. Emulators are perfect. Nothing better than playing old school NES or Sega games. The gameloft games run great, and lots of games in the market have support but dont mention it. I sit at work and play all day long.
The analogs work better than you think they would although it takes some getting used to. I
As a phone I have no issues. Its just like any other android I've had. Dont let the specs fool ya, its pretty quick, camera is good enough for me and I've only used the front facing camera once. It was fine. Mine came with a class 2 sd card so I bought a class 10. Made a little difference. Noticeable at least.
I like it.

I beg to differ, the iPhone 2g had an inferior screen.
The Play's screen may not be good in the direct sunlight, but it's still far from the worst. I have no troubles reading stuff in direct sun. Sure, colors go to ****, so pictures and videos suck, but as a phone it's still completely usable.

Emulators, Imagine The Possibilities!

Has anyone else thought of emulators on the ouya? Playing retro games on the big screen again would be great. Personally this is one of the biggest reasons I'm excited for the console. Can't wait to play ocarina of time.

I've bought/pre ordered the ouya primarily for xbmc, but being able to pay some classics like shadow run and legend of Zelda, whilst lying in bed on a Sunday morning is massively appealing.
It's starting to feel like Christmas with the release just around the corner and I'm looking forward to seeing what the devs around here do when they get their mucky paws on it.
cooool
No, I prefer something like the Xperia Play for emulators, though its a bit out dated in term of performance. But the Ouya should do emulators really well too. I'm mainly getting the Ouya to use as an HTPC.
ditto.
I backed OUYA mainly for XBMC but the fact that I can run emulations is a bonus. imaging DosBox with all the old school Sierra games, on the big screen.
Emulate
God i totally love the idea of using emulators on this it's another reason i purchased it. On my phone gs2 i use the playstation emulators gameboy eveyrthing now to be able to do it on a tv.... man im excited
Search YouTube. Tons of videos of devs using side loaded emulators to play old school games on the Ouya. It's reality, folks.

Betrayal at Krondor
Honestly, there's not really more "possibility" with emulation on the Ouya than there is on any other somewhat recent Android device.
There is one bad thing. The focus Ouya team are now placing on emulators could result in unneeded focus on the subject and gaming company retained lawyers could be out for money. Kind of like when MP3 started getting popular and you had a lot of one hit wonders trying to sue for a back catalogue that nobody even bought when they were new. Saturday Night Live had a funny skit about that.
Ouya had better be careful, since they are pushing it as a feature, which will be like a bleeding cut in the water to lawyers.

I dunno about having to worry that much about emulation and the legalities for the OUYA. Heck, google play sells emulators that can be used on any android device. the ouya is that itself.. just another android device. emulation isn't illegal..
The emulation is not illegal, only the BIOS and the Games which are downloaded
are more or less illegal. These would have to be copied from your own console with
special equipment... nobody does this in the time of internet.
Theoretically this things could be free to download if the copyright owner allows this.
There is also my idea, that Nintendo and others aren't interested in forbidding emulation
for some (not every) console and that's why they aren't fighting against emulation.
In Ouya you can download and install anything... So, doesn't matter if it's legal or not...
Has anyone tested the Interworks Controller Pro U (aka Retro Classic Controller) with the Ouya (or any Android device)? I'm especially interested in joystick functionality...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
I've sideloaded SNES9X emu, works good. Started playing chrono trigger, it nice it has an option to let joystick function as dpad.
I'm about to see n64oids performance on the ouya. If it does run smoothly then I guess I will be replaying Zelda oot
I personally prefer mupen64. Ouya is plenty powerful enough for it anyway
Emulators
Emulators, I hadn't even thought of that, now I'm really excited about the Ouya, mine should be arriving very soon... I think some companies turn a blind eye to very old emulated games because it keeps their IP popular, which for some franchises still has some value.
For now, i managed to work gba, nes, snes, genesis, psx and n64 emulators via sideloading and all worked smooth with posibility of assign hardware pad buttons to them
There are 3 emulators in the OUYA store.
1. EMUya for NES emulation with intergrated ROM store (I'm sure this won't go forever, pretty much illegal).
2. Mugen64 is an N64 emulator which works better than any N64 I tested before, plus it's already mapped to work with the OUYA controller and does so flawlessly. No lag whatsoever
3. 2 different SNES emulators which also work very good. One of them is already altered to work perfect with the OUYA the other one is a known one from the play store.
I got the ouya especially for emulation, because hooking up my Galaxy S3 via HDMI to the TV and using a PS3 wireless controller was too much of a hassle and had a crazy input lag. With the OUYA no input lags at all.
Feels like playing the real consoles. Finally.
