I'm not the OP but i believe i may be able to answer that. First of all, for someone who has been using Windows mobile, using pim backup or other backup tools it is easy to transfer not just our contacts but also our pms from one WM device to another. For some, it may not be important but for others it is.
Another reason is that in a new WM device we can install the same apps we had in our previous device and learn quite easily how to use it.
Battery life is also a factor. To the best of my knowledge, android uses the battery much faster than WM.
You may ask, since i like WM so much, why do i post in this forum. It is because people who do have android keep telling me how good it is so i'm considering buying ZET Blade as a cheap way to try out android without crying over it if it turns out i don't like it. However, i would like to see the things i mentioned above being seen to

Make the switch to android. i was a hardcore wm fan like you. i bought a zte blade to test android. it is amazing! so i got a galaxy tab a week later. from now on my next primary phne will be android from now on

Everyone who has ever used android says so but why? What makes it so good? And why did you change the blade within one week? is it not good?

Try it our yourselff... it has so many apps potential development, we switch from the blades software, because it comes with lots of carrier and manufacture bloatware

Well, at least in Greece (where I live) carriers are forbidden to lock the devices to their networks, so they don't bother to put too much bloatware in them either. However, i take it would you suggest another device as a first and cheap android phone? If so, what would it be? And since i'm affraid i have derailed the topic, please pm me your answer, because this is probably off-topic

as i was a hard winmo user with my hd2 i switch it completely to Android and i m happy so far.
For me it is much better than winmo more fast and stable and no need to reboot after install uninstall.
As for the apps there are so many that i can guarantee that most users will say bye bye to winmo...

A quick question if you may, zte blade with an LCD screen and 256 ram (that's the version they have in greece) or samsung galaxy 3 (i5800) at the exact same price, 159 euros ans as far as i can see the same characteristics

They can be unlocked to 512 RAM if you're comfortable with that sort of thing.

Ha-ha-ha! Exactly the same spec! Let's just start with the screen resolution, which is exactly 1/2 of the Blade's.
Right now, there's just no other Android device at a similar price point to match (even the LCD) ZTE Blade specifications

HD2 or Desire

I know u ppl got tired of this question , but since I'm ordering new phone these days , I dunno which one to choose.
My vote will go to HD2 , since I heard there will be Android on it aswell (that was my main reason why I even thought about Desire).
I hope you kind ppl can help me solve my "problem"
Cheers,
Alex
Just get a Desire, the HD2 will never run Android as stable day-to-day as phone a designed to run the OS.

Like I thought so, thanks for your reply.
EDIT : Also , other replies are welcome too
depends on what you need most, big screen or android.
Both , but Android on 1st place.
The Desire HD or HTC Ace is due in October basicly a HTC EVO for GSM, it may be worth waiting till that comes out before you buy...
Personally, I will jump to Android when this phone arrives, I'm done (after many years) with WM ...
Thanks for reply , I just can't wait 'till October , but thanks anyway.

if android is your top priority, why is this even a debate???
There has not been one instance of Android as a primary OS on any WinMo phone to date. And that is after, what, 2 years of trying.
Don't let the aesthetics of the HD2 fool you. If your main concern is the OS, then go ahead and get the Desire. No question about it. Android will never be running 100% on the HD2 and if you're not accustom to winmo in general (which mean countless head-scratching as you're trying to make it work), you're screwed.
Then I guess imma buy Desire.
Thanks for feedback.
Actually I'm using desire ROM on hd2, working fine, they made Android really batter in a few days.. think of the advantage of a dual boot

Hmmm , does it have any glitches / bugs w.e ?
Cuz I don't want my phone to freeze or something , and its brand new.
You bet it does. I am an ex-owner of an HD2 and I swear to God that if the guys from the service center will give me a new HD2, I`ll say "no, thanks... what about a desire?" without having any second thoughts.
Personally, I`m done with the HD2. Full of bugs/freezes/etc, and I might say that I`m not quite the average apple fanboy who wants everything to work out-of-the-box. I love tweaking and hacking, but only to an extent.

my girfriend has the htc desire. in my opinion it has only 2 advantages over my hd2: better screen sensitivity and a brighter/more colorful screen (which i find not very natural anyway...).
the hd2 can run android now, it has a larger screen (with more natural colors) and i'm not willing to give up on wm just yet. android is very finger friendly, tons of apps and a more "secure" future ahead but i got bored with it very quickly.
so to make things short, i recommend to go with the hd2 or wait for something else...
oh, forgot to mention - your experience with the hd2 is highly dependent to the rom/radio/location "trinity". i am very happy with mine
I really wanna say: get the HD2.
An Android ROM should be made available in another month or two and with all the development behind the HD2 (on XDA of course!), it might even run Android better than the Desire some day. And who knows, the HD2 might be ported to WP 7 some time next year.
How about them apples?

I think you should get the HD2. What can the Desire do that that the HD2 can't? And that massive screen dweebs out any other phone on the market. Plus the HD2 is cheaper than the Desire.
If HD2 will get a Stable and fast Android rom.....go to HD2....you will have two SO on a big, big screen.
but just if will have android stable...in contrary....

[Q] Planning to buy Acer neoTouch s200 f1 and custom Rom for update

Hello,
i am planning to buy the Acer NeoTouch S200 F1, and i would like to know which custom rom consider to be the best. In addition, could you tell me if Greek language is supported?
Thanks in advance
Well it depends what rom you consider the best.
If you already know about Windows Mobile and its different Homescreens it is actually up to you.
I personally prefer SPB mobile shell, www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell , but it does cost . If you decide to choose SPB mobile shell, then a clean and lite Rom would be one of your choice
Or if you go for Sense 2.5, then Arto's sense rom would be the best choice for you. Some nice feature i really like is SRS WOW HD which signifantly improves the sound quality
Concerning greek i can't answer your question
Thanks for your answer
i read that the latest official rom from acer is ver 3. Does it worth to change it with another unofficial rom? What common things will improve?
In addionio could you tell me how do you find sound speaker and camera quality?
Thanks in advance!
well there are wm versions that are more fingerfriendly, and many unofficial roms run on these.furthermore many unneccessary apps from acer are mo more included
speaker quality concerning the speaker for a call is fine but the external speaker is lets say sufficient
the camera is the biggest weakness, lack of features and bad quality of the photo unless the light conditions are perfect. my old omnia did much better. video recording isnt the best either
Thank riotman for your answers. I really appreciate.
Do you suggest me another smartphone in ~300euro, better than this one?

I am using Acer only because i need a Windows Mobile device for my work, otherwise i would bought a Android smartphone - probably HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S (I9000).
Android is having much better apps and is easier for use. If you have enough money then buy HTC Desire - you wont regret it - but don´t buy Acer Liquid or some other Android under 300 €.
lets say im contended but i wouldnt recommend it, bad acer service, built quality suffers fast from daily use and wm is a dying plattform. id also buy an android device like the desire or galaxy s if i needed replacememt
neotouch can be found ofr 199 euros...I don't think that you can find a decent adroid smartphone in that price-range..
id like to see the source where u can buy a new acer neotoch for 199 euros...

None of them, because they both have small display resolution - very bad for surfing.
But, if you are O.K. with that, then i would always go for HTC.
thats why i thought acer neotouch with the 3.8 " screen.

if hes never used a smartphone before, y is windows mobile perfect for him?
might as well get an iPhone 4. easy to use.
he would probably hate windows mobile...
For lot of years only windows mobile were exists. Did you hate them so much (as now)? I believe not. You hate them now because you see android and iphone
The phone will be for my father. He will use it for wifi surfing, listen to music and watch a small video, take a picture.
i like the big screen 3.8"
what do you thing? if i was 'sure' that acer phones is not like acer laptop, i will bought it
Well, Windows Mobile demands a quite large amount of time to understand its functionality... its not like an iphone, which takes away your opportunity to decide what you want to be able to do.
Freedom always requires time to get along with, so if your father likes to discover this, windows mobile will be ok for him.
I actually even gotta agree that the big advantage of Windows mobile is the large variety of Navigation software.
But still i wouldnt recommend Acer... My battery cover is kinda loose after a few months, its not totally fix anymore, btw the battery cover gets scratched really easily, and as already mentioned, unless the daylight conditions arent perfect, the camera is useless.
Try to buy a used HD2 from ebay or somewhere else. it'll be the better choice.
Dont get me wrong, The Acer neotouch is a stunning device, but it's built quality isnt made to last very long

otherwise for business or private :

Actually, I'm quite happy with the stock Acer ROM, it's the most finger friendly UI I've seen (I dislike Manila and SPB Mobile after ver2). Only problem I have with it is just the outdated WM 6.5 and I can't seem to arrange the Start menu icons easily.
I can't say Android is a better platform because I bought one and tried it out extensively. If you're looking for a "smart" phone, then go for Android. If you're looking for a PDA phone, then get a Windows Mobile.

OK. But is the Acer then Wm phone to go for? The HD2 might indeed be of better build quality but it has a smaller capacity battery, is too big and cost allmost twice as much.
So the question remains. Is the HD2 (for a slightly slower device but better build quality) the snapdragon WM phone to go for or is the neotouch the better option (especially since the HD2 won't get Windows Phone 7 as was originally promised and remains on a dying platform).

[Q] Gingerbread on Focus?

I was just curious if anyone has any thoughts on Gingerbread on a Samsung Focus? I read that the Nexus S with the recent Gingerbread installed is the identical phone. I am very happy with Phone 7 and have no intentions of switching but the possibility could give us all much more value with the Focus. The thought of Gingerbread on this phone may also add to the longevity and a market value if someone wanted to sell it before their contract is up. I love phone 7 and hope they start some regular updates to make the phone even better.
Yep.. it's called the captivate LOL and probably not because it's a 3 button phone, kinda why HD2's and other window mobile phones are not upgradable

on a side note.... the HD2 is upgradable... they've successfully put windows 7 on it. The only catch so far is it doesn't have the correct licencing so it isn't able to have working live tiles or the marketplace. But none the less.... its on there working.
I dont think anyones been working on Android on our phones yet. First thing's first is to get WP7 cracked open totally then they can do their magic. That's still a ways off though.
If you want android on a phone, how about you buy an android phone and not clutter wp7 areas.

well work in progress...considering they said WM7 wouldn't be able to run at all on any other devices Id say its a pretty huge step. Probably the only WM phone that can do it and do it well. Android still doesn't work fully on my touch pro 2 but I kept that phone just for that reason that one day it WILL be able to run it.
the HD2 can run android (almost full), WM 6.1/6.5, WM7 and I think they were saying they're starting to work on getting webos on it too so, pretty stellar phone I would say!
Still, like I said, I think android running on our phones is still a long ways a way. They only just recently cracked one of the HTC WP7's to be able to run other roms. Big step for sure but still a far cry from running an entirely different OS

Yeah well considering I use the GPS, and camera a lot, and live tiles now that I have it. I wouldn't consider that close lol That 4.3 screen is just awesome for TomTom. I'd rather use my HD2 as an android device before a windows phone 7. Web OS might be interesting though... aah so little time some many possibilites. Another problem is the Focus is only a 3 button phone, I duno if you can rework Android to work on 3 instead of 4.

Benny, since "up-to-date" is a fairly subjective term, and the available builds of Andoid (both NAND and SD) change daily (or more!), then that's not a question with a easy, single answer.
Your best bet is to first pour thorugh all the guides that motomudder linked you to above, and then once you've done that you'll be better equiped to know exactly what you want/need in a ROM, and then it'll be much easier for you to go through the available choices and make the best decision for you.
Also, questions like this (and others you have) should either go in the Q&A section, or in the thread for the ROM they're related to...I'll move this one over there now, but please be mindful of this in the future

MOD EDIT: Flaming comments removed
There is MANY MANY reasons why somebody would want want a HD2 specifically for Android over a Desire HD.
1) Price!
2) Specs are very similar.
3) Multiple choice for OS so multiple choice for apps/games.
4) Android runs VERY well on HD2.
5) Price!
6) Price!
7) and more and more.
Thank you for all the replies!
The biggest factor here is price, as many people have already stated. Although network compatibility is actually something I'm relying on right now. I'm in Toronto (Canada), where we have 2 new mobile providers that run on the same AWS band as T-Mobile USA. I'm purchasing a used T-Mobile HD2 so that I can use it (unlocked) on one of these new carriers.
As far as I understand, the Desire HD doesn't even exist in an AWS version, so it's not even an option for me at all. And even if it was, I wouldn't spend that kind of cash on a phone right now. I'm getting the HD2 for a great price... that's what encouraged me to go this route.
Off topic, but has anyone else noticed the price of hd2 has gone UP in the past week or two? Coincides with a couple of software releases as well as articles ABOUT those releases. Just thought it was funny how everybody is now discovering the power of this phone and therefore the price has almost doubled since new year's eve.

Ya, I ended up paying a bit more than I originally expected to. I still got it for dirt cheap compared to the other options that currently exist. Well now that I have it I am very eager to get Android running on it. Wish me luck...

Questions from an android users planning to switch

Hey guys! What's up? Well I currently own a one x and I'm happy with it, however I'm still planning to make the switch. Not to the lumia 900 but perhaps the lumia 920(when it comes out of course) .
So basically I might be selling this phone . Now I just wanted to ask the following and please try to be as honest and not bias.
Would you guys in all honesty say that windows mobile 8 is more fluid than android?
To users who have used android and winmo os, what is your take on this? Is browsing nice and smooth ?
Anyone here who has been using android for a while and made the switch to winmo here have any regrets? How well to social networks work performance wise (facebook, Twitter, etc.)
One thing I'm particularly worried about is that I buy the 920 and it ends up getting a mini package with not much support (win 7.8).. what's your take on this ?
I hope this thread is not in the wrong place I thought posting in the lumia 900 section andnd speaking to Nokia users is the closest way ill find the answers I'm looking for.
Thank you guys. Of course once the device is out I will test it in the shop as well. But till then I would like to read your feed back. Thanks in advance
Edit: do you guys have custom roms like android users? (A question I thought i would add to the list ad well)

Would you guys in all honesty say that windows mobile 8 is more fluid than android?
To users who have used android and winmo os, what is your take on this? Is browsing nice and smooth ?

Well, we don't know. Not many people have seen WP8 yet. But if WP7 is anything to go by, yes, it is very much more fluid and smooth than Android is.
Anyone here who has been using android for a while and made the switch to winmo here have any regrets?

You always kind of pine for that new hot app that isn't out on WP7... But in general no, I personally haven't had any regrets.
How well to social networks work performance wise (facebook, Twitter, etc.)

That's all built in the OS. There are of course 3rd party apps for them. The Twitter app sucks at the moment, Facebook is nice.
One thing I'm particularly worried about is that I buy the 920 and it ends up getting a mini package with not much support (win 7.8).. what's your take on this ?

My opinion is that because of the switch to Windows 8 shared code, the future is much brighter than it was before.
Current Windows Phone is definitely more smoother and more reliable than my Android. Here is a good video of the social aspect of WP.

Thank you for the video. So basically out of the box one does not feel like they have to smack a custom Rom onto it for the sake of making it a good user experience?
Thanks for the information guys. Haha! I hope the screen size of the lumia 920 doesn't feel much different(smaller) in size compared to my one x because I'm so used to this size.
