[Q] Gingerbread on Focus? - Focus General

I was just curious if anyone has any thoughts on Gingerbread on a Samsung Focus? I read that the Nexus S with the recent Gingerbread installed is the identical phone. I am very happy with Phone 7 and have no intentions of switching but the possibility could give us all much more value with the Focus. The thought of Gingerbread on this phone may also add to the longevity and a market value if someone wanted to sell it before their contract is up. I love phone 7 and hope they start some regular updates to make the phone even better.

Yep.. it's called the captivate LOL and probably not because it's a 3 button phone, kinda why HD2's and other window mobile phones are not upgradable

on a side note.... the HD2 is upgradable... they've successfully put windows 7 on it. The only catch so far is it doesn't have the correct licencing so it isn't able to have working live tiles or the marketplace. But none the less.... its on there working.
I dont think anyones been working on Android on our phones yet. First thing's first is to get WP7 cracked open totally then they can do their magic. That's still a ways off though.

If you want android on a phone, how about you buy an android phone and not clutter wp7 areas.

well work in progress...considering they said WM7 wouldn't be able to run at all on any other devices Id say its a pretty huge step. Probably the only WM phone that can do it and do it well. Android still doesn't work fully on my touch pro 2 but I kept that phone just for that reason that one day it WILL be able to run it.
the HD2 can run android (almost full), WM 6.1/6.5, WM7 and I think they were saying they're starting to work on getting webos on it too so, pretty stellar phone I would say!
Still, like I said, I think android running on our phones is still a long ways a way. They only just recently cracked one of the HTC WP7's to be able to run other roms. Big step for sure but still a far cry from running an entirely different OS

Yeah well considering I use the GPS, and camera a lot, and live tiles now that I have it. I wouldn't consider that close lol That 4.3 screen is just awesome for TomTom. I'd rather use my HD2 as an android device before a windows phone 7. Web OS might be interesting though... aah so little time some many possibilites. Another problem is the Focus is only a 3 button phone, I duno if you can rework Android to work on 3 instead of 4.

Thanks for the useless comment. This is a legitimate question. Not all of us want to spend the money on every different devices. I'd like to be able to run android for testing on the Focus if it was possible. Nothing wrong with that question.

Are we going to see a push for an Android port for the Tmo HD2?

Are we going to see a push for an Android port similar to what they already have working on the Touch Pro 2? I was curious if this is already in the works, or if we're just going to have to wait for the EVO to come out and have someone port that over.
Android question
Dude to answer your question Android is the same for Europe, Australia, US, and China. It utilizes the same drivers so bro so no need to port, it has all ready been done.

not to be rude but he asked are we going to see a push for android to hd2. Obviously android will stay the same throughout other countries..other than language adaptations. N to answer the original question...yes there will be a push, im thnknin when the evo comes out we will have a better chance. N if there was a fully working android port to HD2 i would have it, i pray the day comess soon
I hope so, because its the only reason i got the HD2 to be honest, and that way i can get rid of my Nexus because WinMo isnt cutting it for me (
In the main HD2 forum there are a couple of Android Discussion & Dev threads. From what I have heard they are working on it but with the current available info it could be 6 months to a year before we see a working port, now that may or may not change when the Evo is released. You have to realise that even though the hardware is similar, the drivers and Kernel are much different so it's very difficult to make a port.
But that's pending the release so we will see.
Can i run Android on my HD2?
..And if so which one should i use?
Im already missing Android, this Winmo is making me want to pull my hair out..
Are there any with Sense UI that run 2.1 Android?

If WinMo makes you want to pull your hair out, maybe you should go back to an Android device?
No, there are no fully working ports, and there probably won't be for a good year.
Why you'd want to castrate a phone like the HD2 with Android is beyond me though.
dude if you like Android why in the world would you buy the HD2? You already know this is running winmo from the start. if you're still in the 14day buyers remorse then return it. cant be that hard....... heard the desire is coming sometime this year to tmobile so save yourself from trouble and from pulling your hairs..... i myself is gettin' bald from people asking bout androids and crap for hd2.... lol
The HD2 is not that different from a desire/nexus 1, why not just buy that instead of buying a WM device then posting in a WM forum hoping for an android port? Seems simpler and you get a FULLY working device.

Truefully I'm happy with the HD2. I sold my Nexus cuz I love the screen on this thing and you can't go wrong with snap dragon on this device but until TMO gets their own version of a the Supersonic um good for now.
I think this phone would be a beast with some form of Android on it.
This is probably the 20th thread created asking the same question... please search before starting new threads. They have been working on an Android port for months now. The EVO might help a little, but it will still be a long time before there is a decently working port... at least a year.
I dropped my G1 for this phone, I love Android and all, but the screen size and speed was worth it. I do hope someone gets Android running on it, because that would be just awesome. If not, it's no biggy.
Also, are there any partial ports of android? Like ones with no Wifi etc? I haven't seen anything, but I may have looked in the wrong places.
No there is nothing working yet, partial builds will be the first that we get and then go from there. But like said it may be up to a year before we do.

The *hope* is to dump the kernel from the Supersonic on Sprint when it comes out this summer. That *might* help a bit with drivers and whatnot, but even then, it is going to take some work.
so all-in-all... there will definately be android on the HD2 eventually, correct ? (I am looking forward to it...)

No, there's no definite anything. Android may never get ported. WM7 may never work. There's some talented people out there but that doesn't guarantee a damn thing.

By that time Windows Phone 7 will probably be ported over to the HD2.
Why buy a WM phone and wish for Android? Why not just get the N1? Android and Windows are made for two different types of people. Those who just want to press a button and those who want to see how the button works and change it to do other things.
From day one, WM was never meant to be an "out the box and work like a charm" device. It always required a little tinkering. Hearing all this "I wish it had Android" makes me wanna puke!

No Mobile 7 upgrade!!!!

So, I just got off the phone with TMob support and found out that my new phone will NOT qualify for Windows Mobile 7 later this year. Needless to say I am pretty upset about this, but I am torn because I LOVE this phone...I do have the option to return the phone for a full refund.
Should I dump it and wait for Sprints Version with Android or roll the dice and mod the hell out of it???
I can't stand Windows 6.5, but fear hosing my phone with heavy mods...
I was thinking of getting the HTC EVO/Supersonic as well but its a non GSM phone
i am sure it will get ported to this device.

Its already been ported to the HD2. I'm not sure why people want WP7 it sucks compared to 6.5.X. WP7 is so locked down with no multitasking, copy n paste, and restricted install on apps. Granted something like side loaded apps will be taken care of with cooked roms but no multitasking or copy n paste is big problem for me.
I'm sorry but all I want to say is SRSLY? I hope you didn't really just find out about this, this has been all over tech blogs, here and tmonews for months, even before the HD2 was released, just give it time and it will be ported.

Yup, he's right. More than likely it will be ported sooner or later. Same goes for Android on HD2. Dunno when though. Still don't let it stop you from enjoying the HD2.
Well the joke is on me for sure...Thanks for all the comments and I will have to make the decision to join the fun and make this phone really rock or wait for the next generation...I am please with Tmob and their understanding to let me out of my contact with a full refund...good customer services for sure

If you can't stand WinMo6.5, you should consider returning it. Their won't be fully-functional ports of either WinPhone 7 or Android until at least the end of the year, maybe longer(probably). This is a WinMo6.5 phone... why did you get it in the first place if you can stand WinMo? If you want an Android phone, get an Android phone. If you want WinPhone 7, wait for a WinPhone 7 phone.
Has no one seen this video? The HD2 has already had WP7 ported to it. Everything is working except the video drivers are beta so it runs kinda slow.

It hasn't been released, and it's debated whether it's real or not. And it was never stated that everything was working, plus without good video drivers, it won't be very useful.
From what I have heard and seen...6.5 > 7
Besides...7 will not be out till probably Q4 and thats not to say that TmoUs will have a Winmo 7 device at launch.
TmoUS now gives full handset discounts after 1 year, and I myself have 4 lines on my account...2 of which are still available for a full upgrade after I upgraded my line to get the HD2...so I dont think there is much to worry about here.
Besides...I have no doubt is the abilities of the XDA cooks
I say keep it! the Hd2 has a bright future with the ppl of Xda on top of it.
Stick it out man.. its gonna have wp7 and android later on for sure.. i have no doubt.
Mod it dude.. you can get it just how you want almost. theres is many roms and mods and theres no limit.
I say keep your phone because it's a great machine and 6.5 can be good. As far as android and WP7S go it could be a long wait. Android is in progress but there is a lot of work to do.
On the Windows Phone 7 Series side I wish people would stop promising that XDA will port it over for this phone. We don't know. There is a video of some reliable people claiming they have it partly working but until we have something we can install it is all rumor.

It was widely known that the HD2 wouldn't get a WP7 update weeks before it ever came to t-mobile (why do you think they're selling it so cheaply?)
That being said, there's a good chance that an unofficial WP7 and/or Android port will come to the HD2 in the future. The biggest question is how long it will take for this to finally happen...and if by the time it does, you would have moved onto a new device or not.
Supposedly WP7 has already been ported to the HD2, but there isn't any solid confirmation that its real. On the other hand, there isn't any solid confirmation that its fake either.
If you don't like Windows Mobile, then I would return the device to t-mobile, rather than going through the mind f*ck of waiting for a port to come. I don't know why anyone bought the HD2 without being absolutely sure they could stand Windows Mobile. I don't know why anyone would buy a device on the *chance* that it would be upgradable to a new OS.
WP7 will not be perfect
I agree with many ppl here that WP7 will be less functional than 6.5 mainly because of its interface.. I know that having tiles for every single app and scrolling vertically in order to find the app at the bottom would not be nice...
However, putting all the negatives of WP7 aside, the only reason I would want it running on my HD2 is mainly for the apps... lets face it, Microsoft is going to go crazy on new applications and all the developers are gonna support WP7 once it comes out... so all I want is application support as HD2 has all the hardware required to run the apps for WP7...
Love the HD2 and WM6.5, just want more and better looking apps... there are many good ones out but I would love it if I had the option to pick between similar apps...
I'm a software developer and let me tell you, working on applications for the .net 3.5 CF is horrible. For me, WP7's support for both silverlight and XNA is probably the biggest draw for me. Plus the XBOX Live integration will be killer. I saw a demo of the same application running on the phone and on the xbox and the dev said that 90% of the code stayed thed same. That is a HUGE win.
I think that the quality, look and feel, availability, and discoverability of apps is the the main reason for WP7.
WM 6.5 is a computer, and I use it like a computer. I had an iPhone before my HD2 and even though it was limited, slower, smaller, locked, etc the fact that I could search for an app and find exactly what I was looking for in seconds ON THE PHONE and have it work and consistantly look good is what I miss most. That is what WP7 is bringing to the table, and if numbers are any indication, that's what people want. Just look at market share trends.
Dream setup: Dual boot WPClassic and WP7.

Wait, you just found this out YESTERDAY?!?!? Wow. How was life under that rock? Fear not. While it might not be an "official" update, there is promising video out there that shows WM7 running on the HD2.
My questions is why in the blue blazes anyone would want that iPhone clone is beyond me.
My second question is if you can't stand 6.5 why did you get the HD2? If you can't stand it, take that sucker back.

Is there still an progress of the Android port?

Hey all,
Im quite new and I was wondering if someone knows if there still is a progress of the android port to the HD2.
I've searched myselfs lots of times but I didnt find anything except in the [CLOSED] ANDROID/MAEMO/LINUX on HD2 [NO MORE ACTIVE!!] thread (CANT URL THIS IM NEW!!!)and its closed...
So my question was... Is there still a progress going on? and how far is the progress? Please reply.

Yeah, there's no way to positively say how long it will be or even if it will ever be done.... right now they are stuck on some kernel issues that they have yet to figure out. They haven't made any more progress for a couple weeks, I think. But I'm remaining hopeful.... I think things will work out eventually. I'm in no rush for Android.

The drivers aren't the main issues.... they already have a lot of the drivers. The main thing they were hoping to get from the evo is the touchscreen... but it uses a different touch sensor than the HD2, so probably no luck there. The evo might help a little, but probably not any more than the nexus one did. It's just gonna take time to work out the kernel issues.
With so many android phones coming out with specs similar or even better than the HD2, this is a futile attempt.

This is the worst kind of news... I mean, baby steps are fine, but no progress makes me worry.
... not wishing to bash the people who are working on this, just stating my worries here.
BTW, I'm sort of amazed that hardware manufacturers would rather side with software developers rather than the community. IE: Throw down the specifications and then porting one phone OS to another phone won't be such a problem, right? Instead, they keep the specs hidden and only one software company gets them (in this case MS). If software could be changed, it would force the developers to put some more effort into it.
Alternatively... are there any phones with Android and Snapdragon-like CPUs coming out sometimes soon? I bet that'd help.

Why is it a futile attempt? It was known from the start that there will be just as good or better android phones by the time it was finished. Thats how it was for all the android ports to WinMo devices in the past. I dont want to use android full time... anyone who does should have gotten an android device instead of a WinMo device. I want to use my WinMo most of the time, but have the ability to boot into android on the same phone and use that if I want to. Android or Linux ports were never being developed to completely replace WinMo... just get an android phone if you want that.

shoot, the only reason I want Android is for the apps. I could care less if the radio worked correctly. a phone is a phone. The apps and hardware is what makes it stand out and we got some bad ass hardware.

More Likely To Happen First....WP7 or Android?

I'm sorry HD2 lovers but although Windows OS is pretty custimizable its CLEARLY a VERY OLD OS that I just cant get that into. So my question is this and your answers really depend on whether I decide to keep the phone or not. What is more Likely to happen first
-Fully Working WP7
-Semi Working Android(ie: broken wifi, bluetooth, camera etc...)
Hum! its hard to say... But I am sure that when either of those come out, its going to be a P.O.S.
I wouldn't keep my hopes up on either, but im thinking WP7 might be the easier port.
If you really don't like WM6.5, return it and get an android device. By the time WP7 is out there will likely be much better hardware out with it officially installed.
Qualcomm has dual core and 1.5ghz snapdragons in the pipeline for later this year, im sure there will be many WP7 phones with them.
On the other hand if you're a WM fan like myself, stick with the HD2 because its probably the best hardware that WM will ever be officially released on.
It would be interesting to see HTC do an official android release for the HD2. There are no licensing issues why they couldn't, just have to spend some time to do it, or at least give the enthusiast community the needed drivers and other know how to get it working so we're not reinventing the wheel. you know they've probably already got it working in shop.

This is the 3rd time i'e seen this exact same question posted. Either one will be at least 6 months-1 year away.... maybe more.... so if you don't like WinMo, I suggest getting a different phone. Personally, I think WinMo is the best OS out there for mobile devices and I am glad to have what will probably be the best WinMo phone of all time since there won't be many more winmo phones made.
My bad. You guys are right. I saw the news for the port but didn't follow up about it being fake.
I still think WP7 will be ported first.
With all the Android Superphones coming out (EVO [sprint], Droid X, Incredible [verizon], Galaxy S [t-mobile], Captivate [ATT]), its easier to buy a new device than use a ported ROM on the HD2.
I think we're more likely to see a windows 7 Shell similiar to how HTC Sense is on the HD2 before any fully working windows phone 7 ports are done. Although the hardware on the HD2 is pretty much as impressive as anything available now the fact is that, just as with computer parts it will be considered "not fast enough" when windows 7 phones are actually released.
I'm 26 years old and had my first pc in 1994. it was a packard bell and ran at 600 Mhz with 128MB or ram and a 40 GB HD. My HD2 is faster than my first pc ever was and it is about 20x smaller. Anyone else think about these sort of things and really marvel at the pace technology is moving?
The wife and I were in the food store the other day waiting in line behind some lady paying for groceries with a check. My wife was *****ing to me that people are crazy that still carry around paper checkbooks. I told her that when we're older and probably holding up a line with our surgically implanted RFID chips to pay for groceries, some youngsters will be complaining about us not using retinal scans so we can be done quicker..LOL.

[Q] What will happen when android is 100% functional with htc hd2 ??

will a custom ROM have android instead of WM6.5 ?? i mean it will direct boot to android or we still have to open android from WM6.5 ??
at the moment you run android as an application in windows mobile.
other way is to flash andoid to nand like we now flash our windows mobile roms.
as far as i know there is not enough room to flash both OSes to nand. <- pls correct me if im wrong
oh ok when it will be 100% functional with everything working it could be flashed to nand without the WM ?
why did u buy a winmo phone when u want android?
...the world as we know it...will come to an end... lol well what's most likely to happen is people wanting to get windows phone 7 on the phone.

i think thats wrong. android is NOT an app running in windows mobile. this would mean android is runnning as some kind of emulation. as far as i know, winmo is still needed in order to initialize the hardware. by starting haret.exe, the wince-kernel is shut down and a linux bootloader is started.
hopefully we'll be able to flash an android rom to nand and have a device which can hold either OS equally. I personally like the fact that the HD2 can become versatile. I agree - that if someone wants to run android only, he should buy an Android device. I wanted to have a taste of android with the ability to run WM as i have for the past 4 years.

but if someone wants to run android on such a beautiful piece of hardware like our hd2? have you ever seen a good looking android device (i mean the physical device itself, not the ui)?

I bought the device with the intent on running android. I am not help bent on completely removing it
There hasnt been a device until the evo 4g that had the same screen size. And since i dont hop carriers I cant use the evo.
The my touch 3g slide screen is too small
The my touch screen is too small
The samsung galaxy screen is too small
The g1 screen is too small.
The samsung behold 2 sucked !
THe cliq sucked
The nexus 1 screen is too small
So people do have reasons to have the hd2.
Plus a lot of people I have met with the hd2 didnt realize what they were buying. Most people hate the phone. They then see mine with android and fall in love.

Can some one answer this question. What windows mobile 6.5 do, that android can't do? This is my first WM phone and I tho it was alright. I would of got the Evo but I can't switch carriers until the end of the year. Since now we got android, I'm staying with t-mo. I pay full price for this phone ($560.00 in NYC) I first regretted and since android I don't. Anyways I found that android do much more for me than WM. So if I'm wrong please some one tell me. Ps: excuse my english.

For me, I would consider the NAND flash for Android ROM the 100% fully functional since that is of primary importance to me here.
I bought my HD2 even though I knew it had WM. And at the time I didn't want Android at all, just my WM, but with some configurations & such.
But now that I have Android running on it instead, I never want to go back.
And just like someone else said, there ain't an Android phone around that have the same hardware specs as the HD2. Except the EVO, but I've had my phone a long time before they released the EVO. And from what I know it's only available in the US. Maybe I could import one and configure it to run on Swedish networks, but wth..
The wife and I got this phone and she didn't realize it was Windows Mobile. This was my first experience with Sense UI and thought it was awesome.
I loved the phone for what it could do and actually "Used" it to it's potential. She "HATES" it. Then again, I don't blame her. Sense fails hard when it comes to texting and load lag
She can't wait till I can flash Android to her phone. Me, i'll stick with my options.

I don't think people who HATE WinMo buy this phone with the sole intent of putting another OS on it. I think most people bought it for the screen & the media capabilities. For me, I saw a lot of potential in the hardware specs and bought mine cause it's the last real WM phone(I'm sappy like that) and because it's a GSM phone that I can unlock & use for years to come. It was like buying a barebones PC that I could run whatever I want on & have multi-boot systems.
I decided to run Android on it initially out of sheer curiosity, and so I can learn the next OS I'm gonna be using. When WM dies out(it's GOING to happen, so we may as well face it), Android will be what I will move on to partly because its Linux & open source, and partly because there's no way in pus-spewing, blood-gutted hell that I would ever use an iPhone or Blackberry(WP7 has NEVER been an option). I must say, Android runs VERY well on this phone even in its current stage of development, I can't wait to see how awesome it'll be as a fully flashable rom. I'm already almost to the point of not even missing WM anymore. I've been running it for a week now & I'm getting to know how everything works & I love it. Very versatile & powerful, and quite stable. I don't think I quite realized just how many lockups and crashes I was really having with WM until I started using Android as my main OS. The first time I used Android I HATED it because I had a bad build & an underpowered phone(One of the first leaked Froyo builds on a Sprint Hero) and it ran like crap. But with the combo I've got now, it's simply awesome. Everything is so integrated & all the programs mesh together so beautifully. It really does 'just work', and it's hackable & customizable at the same time. Best of both worlds. If & when a NAND version of Android for the HD2 comes out, you can count me in.
Don't get me wrong, I will ALWAYS love WinMo. I think it's the best mobile OS there ever was, and it's incredibly sad that it's dying. It would still be going strong if Microsoft had just marketed it better & hadn't copped out with WP7. But I'm not gonna stay with a stagnant platform that nobody develops for anymore(I'd have stayed with Palm OS otherwise), and I was honestly starting to get bored with it. I had pushed WM to it's limits & did everything I could possibly do with it, and it's just time to move on. I believe Android is the wave of the future, and will eventually overtake the iPhone in popularity.
Plus I love robots, so anything named 'Android' is automatically cool in my book
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Friendly robots are a plus in my book.

Once android 2.2 is fully working, android gingerbread will be released and people can start working on that. Windows phone 7 is also a possibility. Ubuntu is still under development as well. The possibilities are endless.
Why windows mobile 7 when android so much better?
