Replace windows mobile 6 with another OS?

hi guys.
i have a tytn II PDA.
i'm using it since 2-3 months and at the end i can says it is not comfortable at all.
microsoft has to work in the worse way it is possible every time.
not complete as a pda, totally uncomfortable as a telephone.
can u tell me if there are some roma or OS to replace the windows mobile 6 pre-installed?
i knew apple OS where the best one, is there something i can do in order to have a better pda instead of this microsoft trash one?

just out of curiosity how long have you been using the device?
first month or so of using windows mobile is always tedious... but when you get used to it.. you wont want to go back (I got a nokia N95 and regretted it)

hi there.
i'm using the pda since 3 months.
by now i've quite stopped customizing it or "playing" with since i find win mobile set up quite messy.
i came from nokia smartphone series and found symbyan the best os for mobility ever.
fully customizable, fast, stable and above all build with "few clicks" philosopy.
with official win 6 rom, in order to reach a sub menu i have to dig into folders and tabs getting annoyed really fast.
start menu is almost not customizable, i cannot move links where i like, well they could have done a far better work insetad of that.
maybe changin rom passing to an unofficial one could give me some more satisfaction, but i'm not sure since the starting point is the same.
i hope i could explain myself at an understandable basic level ^^

i can believe you can tell me that even USING the touch screen, finding menus and doing other stuffs is easy and intuitive!
there are lots of things could have been projected better as iphone did, for example

However, the first time I had an iPhone in my hands, I admitted its interface is 8 levels ahead of M$. Now, what we need is a fully customizable, fast and stable OS. Might be Android since HTC signed the partnership. Let's see. Anyway M$ got to react quickly otherwise they might be out of the game soon.

Hi, I do agree some things need to be "fixed" in windows mobile... and I have every Faith in the long run MS will do so.. not arguing with anyone here.. just my personal view.. when you get to grips with WM its not too bad.. third party apps do help tho! lol

i totally agree with you...
windows mobile is very complicated becuase it has all these extras that the average cell phone user will never even bother using....word, excel, ppt, etc. while business users thrive on these features.....
i am an average cell phone user but the only reason why i got the 8525 is because of the large qwerty keyboard so i can text a lot, but i wish the interface was as simple as a normal phone, maybe google android will fix this problem in the future =)

extra features do not make something complicated. complicated to you maybe. Very simple and easy in my opinion, besides, its near identical in operation and style to desktop windows, which everyone, even mac users are familiar with.
buying a hermes for just quick sms is like buying a a ferrari to get to the shops... should have bought a sidekick.

they only one who could beat the young sms fanatics was freaky enthusiast old school telegraphs people
if a full keyboard was all the requirements then a nokia comunicator would prob be closer to fitting the need of a normal gsm user who just wanted a keyboard

Check out HTC home. you can add 8 programs to the quick launcher.
Or since you seem to be such a fan of the iPhone, why not install the iPhone interface for hermes http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302739&highlight=iphone
or you can even look into the HTC touch interface.
I think thatif you look at thoes, they will help with your situaltion.
BTW, you should look in the TyTn/Kaiser forums for specific infomation to your phone. this one is for the older TyTn(8525).

Mate, go ahead and install Mobile 6! It is a lot better than the old WM5. Make sure you get a "cooked" version from this site, one with a built in HTC cube, HTC plugin etc. You will not fail to be impressed. Did I mention that you can use a 8 meg micro card for extra storage? Try doing that with an I-Phone!

Doesnt the iphone have 16 gigs

He meant 8 gigs of sdhc ram and if you factor in that you can have as many as you can afford then your software and music and video options are very near limitless

[ROM] Windows mobile 6.1/6.5 request for the Nokia N97

HI,
This is my first post, i actually have been a member for a while, but never felt the need to make a new post because someone always had one. I was looking to see if its possible to get Wm6.1 or 6.5 for a nokia s60 aka nokia n97, because i have been looking for a new phone for a while and i have like been liking the Touch pro 2 but i noticed its too rounded and wide, and the tilt machanism is very weak, and lets be 4real, the spec sheet is the something as the old one except for the phones form factor and price, so i looked some more, and found the nokia n97. The phones spec sheet is soooo out of this world 32Gb built in, compass, wifi, 5mp cam with flash and a sexy form factor, its crazy. I used to have the n95 8gb, then i moved to the omnia, because just think bout it, nokia OS is the worst, and it cant be customized in anyway except color. So is there away to make allow it to have windows mobile 6.1 or 6.5, I hope so. Then that phone will be the best phone out offically, because you cant have a great phone without the greatest OS every made(WM). I have seen the iphone and the G1 running Wm, so im pretty sure that NOKIA'S top phone can run it.

I highly doubt that the N95 hardware is supported by WM6.1 or 6.5. You probably have to write drivers for all of it.

I highly doubt it. If I'm correct, each version of windows mobile is extremely tailored to the device it's intended for, so you'd have to do a lot of work to port it. And as JR_de said, you'd have to write all the drivers for every piece of hardware. And even if you did that, it's unlikely you could ever get things like the camera working. And to make things worse, the device runs at a resolution not supported by Windows Mobile.
And I've watched most of the videos claiming Winmo was running on unsupported devices like the iPhone, and for many of the same reasons here, I would say that they're fake, especially when you take into account the unsupported hardware and screen resolutions, and that capacitive screens are currently not supported. I think a lot of them look like animated GIFs. So the short answer is: I would say it's close to impossible, if not so, to get Windows Mobile on a Nokia N97.

Leo or Nokia N900

I'm anxious to know what you all think about the HTC Leo and the Nokia N900. Which of these two devices is a suitable repacement for our beloved Touch HD??

N900 is not Symbian but Maemo (Linux)

i am actualy considering the N900 , i love HTC as a company ,
but i am very dissapointed from the HTC speed .
and because of that , the Leo is a device with strong processor , and a very bad OS.
if he had the N900 OS , or android , that was nice .
anyway , N900 for me !
and someone should tell HTC to stop sell a good device with bad OS !

Leo looks as though it could be a great device, but Windows Mobile 6.5 is just really starting to show its age and bulkiness(slow even on a Snapdragon). HTC also gimped it by giving it a 65k screen - what's the point of having such a large screen if everything looks like crap on it?
I love my Touch HD, but compared to my friend's 3GS it doesn't have many strong points(and compared to the n900 it loses on all accounts). I'd still wait for more announcement concerning the Xperia X3 before making my final choice.

N900 is interesting but the "Landscape Only" is ugly... Linux OS makes it like PC and this is good but CPU/RAM/Battery moving it?
I have Touch HD and I don't think to buy Leo because no real improvements but not N900 too

I'm with you D'rath on this one as Archos just announced their 4.3 Inch Phone Tablet outfitted with a 1Ghz Hummingbird and android. February 2010 is going to be an interesting month for sure!

I'l be waiting for Tegra/WinMo 7 before i change my HD

when i saw the leo video review i decided to keep my hd leo camera still sucks only improvement is the processor but in the review it is not also so fast don't differ allot the only issue with hd is that it will not get wm6.5 officially when talking about memo5 in nokia n900 it has not allot of applications and not good support for games and applications

It was probably gimped because WM 6.5 only supports 65k colors... still.
The appeal of getting a enormous screen and a much faster processor in Leo is tempting. N900 is interesting, but being a completely new OS think it's best to wait and see. The X3 / SE Rachel also looks tasty, but again too few details to make it a sure-buy.
If nuerom can get overclocking working stablely on the MSM 720x devices I think I'll stay on HD for until end of next year at least

I got for the Leo, I will buy it when it hit the streets.
N900 is bulky compared to leo (because the hardward qwerty keyboard), Leo seems to be faster and more polished in the picture viewer and video playback. Not to mention the multitouch of Leo, wich can become a standard for WM7 and future high end devices.
So for leo:
+Multitouch
+4.3" screen
+I like touchflo
+I love TouchFlo3d
-Dont like WM 6.5 (perhaps with some tweking start menu can be set to work like 6.1,need to read further about this)
...and for Nokia:
+hardware qwerty
-Not symbian (how many aplicacions exist for that varely unused "new" os?)
-Not like the interface

I don't think I would spend that much money on a Htc Leo, and only get a litle faster, a bigger screen and multi touch. I would rather keep my HD, which can do almost anything that Leo can.
If i buy a new phone it has to be much better than the HD, the HD can do almost anything (with a leo rom, its even much better)
The N900 looks like a nice phone. A qwerty keyboard is nice, and I like on the first sight the new Linux os. But I will wait for a while till I get a new device.

n900 for me - I've had guts-full of winmo, and android just doesnt do it for me (dont really like the interface or the architecture tbh).
And btw to the people who say they 'love' these companies because of x, y or z - get real lol. the only time I can imagine someone loving a company is if they either work for that company and they are being paid to say it or they have developed some twisted form of Stockholm syndrome around their employer... if you don't fit into either of these categories, you are a fanboi idiot both are capitalist scumbag companies nearly as bad as apple they cant help it, its just how the world works.

andriod imo is hacky and not very mmmm.. viable(?) for a range of application areas (e.g. video players?) - is it true that all the apps for android have to be written in java? for real? why?
to me, the n900 looks to be suffering from early run hw problems - these im told should be fixed in the 2nd and 3rd runs. as for the software, anything that is currently not working im very sure will be working very soon - simply due to the community around the device and the openness of the platform - this alone sets the n900 apart from everything else - including android (which although linux based, is very different) - a great example of this fact is the fmradio app (http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/fmradio/).
if i've offended you with my opinion in this post, you may consider yourself offended - i don't care!
so, come January, ill be picking up an n900 its the only path of progression for me. btw, if im wrong on anything here please correct me.

I know people complain about HTC all the time (myself included) but they do produce nice phones. My main concern is that they create new phones all the time with no real improvement between them. I think you'll find the next release (or 2-3 after) will be the device worth moving to from the HD.
Also, I'm addicted like many other to flashing (phones ), customizing and tweaking my HD as well as finding new fixes, helping others and constantly being online at XDA. If I was to get the N900 I would lose all this.....................

i'm moving at the moment from the touch pro 2 to n900. why? because as someone posted above im sick of sloweliness of my device (altough latest AthineOS was excellent )
im also a flashing n customizing addict, and on every single device from htc ive had, after installing mod's the OS was simply slowing down.. even changing the wallpaper was a pain in the a**(especially in Manila- u know what i mean ).
im not saying that htc is crap or something, but n900 seems to better fit my needs now.
Getting it in couple days n we'll se was it worth going back to nokia ( god save me from that filthy n sh*tty Symbian) or not.
Surely i'll be missing htc in some way

I really like the design and specs of the HD2, but Windows Mobile makes it very buggy and unreliable :/ Since the new ROM-update didn't fix the sms-problem I need to return my HD2 and buy a new working phone, that can send smses without problems. Does anyone have any experience with the N900 and any cons/pros vs the HD2?

I had a chance to play with the N900. I must say it's awesome

My N900 should arrive in about a week, if you can wait I'll compare it to my HD2 for you....

Is the resistive touchscreen a no go? I'm not sure, but everybody says that capacitive touchscreens are much much better.
I got my HD2 form eXpansys but I'll send it back. It's so buggy and my battery is the worst. I only lasts about 6 to 8 hours, and that's when I'm at work. So I'm doingt pretty much nothing with it...

N900 screen is nice, since you have the option of using a stylus or finger. Some Flash sites have smaller icons, so the stylus function is nice. This also comes handy for mouse function in Flash games.
I have about 200 Flash games saved to my N900 and launch through the file manager. A LOT of Flash games play very well launching them this way.

Resistive screen requiring a stylus? No multi-touch or pinch zoom support? A 3.5" screen instead of 4.3"? 600mhz processor instead of 1ghz?
No thanks, I'll stick to my HD2 if that's ok and I suggest you do the same.

It's a resistive screen so while your finger might work if you press it a certain way (I can get my three year old O2 Orbit to work with my finger too), it's designed to be used with a stylus and comes with all the limitations that implies.

I got the chance to play around with the N900 for a few minutes, I don't regret getting the HD2.
Didn't like the OS, not that WM is any better, but HTC did an excellent job with Sense UI.

ONLY if you prefer resistive screens.
Maemo is certainly not better than Windows Mobile at all and has its own shortcomings, just like any mobile OS.

If you hate the HTC Messaging not being able to handle too many smses you can use this hack to disable it and use standard WM 6.5 SMS interface - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556614&page=1

If you really want to know what the Nokia is like why don't you post on a Nokia forum? You will get more opinions there from those that have used/owned the device but perhaps no less bias than you would get on here.
To be honest, if you are that keen then I would walk into a phone shop and handle a real one. It is the only way to work out whether you can live with a device or not.

If you can live with an small screen is fine, according to me the screen of the nokia 900 is exactly the same size of the N97.

i was going to go for the n900 but the tech specs put me off compared to hd2, then i found outs resistive with no multi touch, a complete joke, nokia are way behind and the device itself is huge compared to the hd2,

i have my HD2 since last friday trough insurance of my old dead Xperia X1, going to test the N900 next wednesday at a friends phone shop
will compare it couse im thinking about switching as well, ill post my findings

check out gsmarena.com they have a long review on the n900 seems good but does have limitations like no voice dialing which may not be a big thing for most people but more importantly no mms ability as a result of maemo not supporting it

Its getting MMS and more widespread portrait operation in an update arriving Dec/Jan...

Just disable HTC Messaging on the HD2 and you get 100% reliable SMS communication.

Just wanting to know is it worth it, I'm on the search for a new phone this week. I live in the u.s&I came across this while looking at the nexus one on the web. I'm usually an android user comming from a tmobile g1.

It all depends on your needs. I work in a company developing soft for all kinds of phones (iPhone, Android, Symbian, WM) and what can I say... There were two phones I really liked in the past few years - Nokia N95 (imo a perfect phone) and... the HD2! It has all features I'm lookin for in a phone and it is stable and easy to use (before I had a HTC Diamond and I wasn't happy with it). Of course there's the iPhone so it depends - if such features as good GPS, internet browsing and decent camera are important for you go with the HD2. If you have some other needs (for example you want to play good games) go with the iPhone or a Symbian phone (there are cool games on OVI Store).

I'm also in your position (and also G1 + CM4.2.13). I'm eagerly awaiting the HD2 from T-Mobile.
I'm interested in the HD2 due to the 4.3" display and snapdragon and WM. I wasn't able to find the same programs from my experience with WM6 on my iPAQ hx4700 PDA (4" VGA lcd). Mainly good PDF reader and video player.
The G1 + Android is very nice, but I don't feel as productive (pdf/text book reading/videos) as I did when I carried my iPAQ and my Motorola Razr phone. Also the lack of 3.5 audio jack...

I was really interested in the N900, until it was released. The 3.5" display killed it for me. I was hoping for it to be like the N810 with 4" display, but slimmer and faster.

Best phone experience I ever had and I been through my fair share. Just don't get it with Vodafone as they are currently refusing to update the rom or even support the phone.
