Get Titanium Backup, free version will do but Pro is much better as when you batch restore apps it will do it all silently instead of asking if you want to install each one. It will also backup/restore your app data.
If you constantly change roms its a must have app.
ty, when i go into titanium back up, it says sorry, i could not acquire root privledges,. this application will not work please verify that your rom is rooted and inclused busybox and try again, i dunno if my rom is rooted or what busybox is, whats this? and where do i keep titanium backup so when i change roms i can get the app and get all my apps back? ty so much.
there is a file data.img in the android file in your sd. copy it to a safe place. download the new americandroid.rar ,unrar it then copy the content of it to the android folder in your sd. clrcad.exe then haret.exe. the booting will take a long time. after the succesfull booting copy your old data.img to replace the new one in the sd.btw americandroid roms are rooted and your case is strange.

rooted means, you have privilege that you can accept and deny that you cant normally, do. like you are the admin etc.
if you go down the route of using your old data.img save your mem card to the pc format the card put the new build on let it boot up and sort its self out turn phone off, then just replace ur data.img from your build you saved onto the mem card and everything will be there,
Titanium back up can save all your settings as well though. personally i use the free version it works well just the downside is you have to go through the process of clicking install on every app again but it works.

So I installed the Cyanogen mod from RomManager to try it out. The thing is, now my phone is telling me my SD card is damaged and I can't read from it. My backups were on there and I foolishly did not save copies onto my computer.
So, is there anyway to get a stock ROM for the incredible so I can flash that back onto there?

Have you tried booting your phone into recovery.
Then going to nandroid in recovery and choosing your backup to restore?
That damaged message sounds like something you see in rom manager, but you can probably still see your SD card fine in recovery if you haven't tried that yet.
Ditto, except have you tried checking your SD card with a reader straight into the PC? If you can't read it with a reader it may very well be damaged.
If it is actually broken IncredibleRoms (dot) com is usually a good place to look for ROM's.
Looked around and found a stock nandroid backup

Only other option might be trying to go the RUU route.
This is a rooted stock rom binny made that you can use. Its from a previous thread a few weeks ago

Can't access the card in recovery either. I even took the card out and put it in my computer and can't read it there either.
I found the droid incredible downgrade file for returning to stock without root, I guess I'll have to go this route. I know I can re-root the phone, its just loosing all my apps and data that's painful.
EDIT: or use the rooted rom, thanks kentoe, that definitely saves me some time.
Titanium Backup can take care of the apps and you could pull data to your pc.
Unless the apps and data were on your SD card in which case you'll need some CSI/NCIS tricks to reconstruct your messed up SD.

Yes, I used Titanium Backup for my apps, but unfortunately they were on the card. I'll just have to call it a loss and reinstall my apps one at a time.
Utils for SD recovery
I have a few utils that have been able to recover data from SD cards, flash sticks, CF stuff like that. Look on the net.
Yeah, I somehow actually damaged my friends SD card from his Moto Droid while attempting to root my Incredible. Needless to say he wasn't very happy. So off to google I went and in the morning he had all his files back like it never happened.

You can rename your current android folder and then install a new one. I don't know about maintaining all your pages and settings. But the problem that you run into while installing multiple versions of android is that they may become corrupt and then you start getting SOD's and other errors.
(On a side note: Its been speculated that you can run scan disks on your sd card when it becomes corrupt. But this didn't fix my problem. SOOO, frustrated, I reformatted the SD card and started over. I've settled on Mattc's 1.7.)

Will try that on the next run...so, what builds did work the best for you? More specifically: what gave you the best battery usage? Which roms did you use?
Desire based 2.2. Only minor glitches. All hardware functioning and battery indicator accurate. Two phones on one!

Could also grab a few cheap smaller SD cards & switch em out as needed, lesser card writes and should help with corruption, etc...
I was just about to ask this question, good news i guess. ive pretty much settled on froyosense 2.2 while i wait to see if we can get closer to a flashable rom (had it with winmob post using android for a month).
I just boot the phone into WinMo. Connect to computer. Copy all the folders that relate to Android. Then delete them from the SD card. Copy over the build I want to test and boot it up.
If I don't want to keep the new build, back to WinMo and computer. Then delete new build folders. Copy old folders back into place. Boot up again. As far as the old build is concerned, it was never removed.

Yeah, that's what I did now. I think, I found my favorite build. At least battery seems to be ok at the moment.

Hey all
I am sorry for sounding like a noob but do I delete "everything" off of the SD card and replace with other build or do I have to leave some files on for it to work right?
Or if it is of the same base build you can just copy your data.img.
Hi I just wanted to say thank you to all of your hard work on this site. Both admin and developers. I didn't expect much when I bought this phone, I got very good price and it was brand new, so why not. Just got it 4 days ago.
Than I did some youtube and saw some pretty cool stuff, and here I am
Anyway, I tested out Android on SD and it was cool, I like it better than WM6.5 but camera could have been better. Feels like WM6.5 camera is better.
Now today I decided to try out Nand version. Omg it took me like 4-5hours, I know lots of information is already there, so I study, study and study. Decided to go with

Everything went smooth, except that I almost killed myself, it was not easy but it was fun. Lots of reboot on HD2 thou.
Anyway everything seems to be running fine and it feel smooth and good. About Ram I saw it list 411 but I guess it's correct because system use the rest.
Anyway sorry for making this long, I have one question. I tried to edit build.prop but without success. I tried and copy to memory and than to pc and edit there to make icon bigger. But when I tried to copy it over to root/system it fail. Same thing when I download text editor from Market and edit on phone, it can't save. How can I make icon bigger if I can't save the file?

for editing build.prop you should get root explorer from the market or the internet.
then in root explorer go to /stystem and there is you build.prop
then click open in text editor and you should be fine

You need to make system R/W,its prolly in read only mode so you need to change it to read&write.
Thanks guys, I will play some more with the phone, haven't got time today. Just testing out some games. Since WM6.5 had very bad Market and barely any games. I tried not to ask to much, but do some research for my own, there's already so much written in forum. But sometimes it's kinda difficult to find the answer.

well for me on this build most of the apps work while on sd card.
some apps btw don't work on gingerbread builds.
well for the SD card you can just copy all the files you have on there to your new one right? that way you definately won't lose anything

I got 32GB Kingston yesterday, I copy all from my old card to PC, and than copy it over to new one. I had some problem at beginning, files wont install. But than I took new one out and reformat with SDFormatter, it seems to works fine now.
But unfortunately my saves files don't seems to work. I re-install Angry Birds but I have to start all over again.
Btw when you click on Apps button on homepage you get lots of apps/games, and you can make a new folder, and than customize it. But can you delete a folder call "All"

Not quite sure what you're getting at. When you make a partition, the phone recognizes that partition as additional space, or just available space the phone has. In other words, partition space is phone space according to the rom. So your apps when installed to the partition should say they are installed to phone. Correct me if this is not what you wanted or trying to get at.

Sorry if I didn't explain correctly. What I want is the extra extern space. As you know HD2 have small intern storage. And on my last Rom I did partition 1gb before I install the Rom. And when I install apps/games they all went to that extern instead of phone's intern.
But I did exactly same thing with this Rom, but it seems that games/apps that I used on last Rom, they went on phone's intern instead of that partition I made. Is there anyway I can make sure there's a extern partition? Any program that I can check with?

Some ROM's you have to turn on auto moving to SD card in the settings. Check there. Anything currently on your phone will have to be moved to the SD card via application manager.
You run any Linux? Easiest way to work with your SD card.

That's where you turn on auto moving. Anything already installed will need moved manually via settings -> applications -> manage applications. Click on a program and choose "move to SD card".
Easy partition creation:
Reformat the whole thing in Win7 using default allocation size.
Boot into MAGLDR -> AD Recovery to enter CWM Recovery Mode
Once in CWM choose advanced, then choose Partition SD card, then choose the size of the partition (Maximum of 1024M recommended)
The choose 0 for the swap and partition away.
*Edit*

We are using the same ROM. Did you check in settings? Mine has the cyanogenmod settings.
And yes to the partitioning. That's how I did mine. Not sure if the ROM need reinstalled as I've always had my card partitioned before the install.
I boot my roms with magldr from the SD card. My current rom won't boot up, so I backed up the whole SD card and put in a fresh rom which works fine, but I'd like to get my PIM/SMS and app data back.
I know I can mount the android FS, but I'm unsure on what is safe to just copy over to the new rom.
I'm guessing app data would be the easiest, but where do the apps keep all the data? I'm guessing in a few places, and would like to be sure i got it all.

You could always try just copying the data.img of the ROM which didn't work, then fresh installing the same ROM, and replacing the new data.img which is generated with the one from the old one. There's a [slight] possibility that this could work. If not, then I think it's stored in a folder called android_secure or something like that, but wait for someone else to confirm before doing anything with that.
I'm loving the CM10 unofficial (SD version by LNE) and see there are various test versions... I've gone with the latest (1.0) and followed all the memory tips, tweaks and SDcard error stuff.... and it's working great - better than the CM7 I have been running...
Question is - when the next version comes out - can I overwrite the files, or do I have to do a totally new install?

That depends on the developer. When he makes major changes he'll probably ask for clean install, whereas when they are just some minor fixes or changes, you probably won't need a fresh install, an overwrite would do.

Yep, what Marvlesz said. If the dev says fresh install, then do that. If not, then just keep the old data.img and you should be good.

If I have apps on the phone that the developer does not include in the build, then when I copy the data.img over, will my apps also reappear, or will i need to install them again?

You can get you settings back by using a backup programme such as Titanium. Google sync will get your Contacts and Calendar back anyway if you have synced it previously to Gmail account.

Yes, Data.img should keep your applications as well as other settings or info.
Just realised, when I copy my SD card to computer there is no data.img file....
How do I create it?

It should already be there, in the Android folder. If you have SD Android and 3rd party apps then there has to be a data.img.

Personally I think those instructions are stupid. I've never had an issue just copying over the old data.img and booting first time around.
