HTC Sense features? - HTC Aria General

Hi again everyone!
This may sound like a stupid question, but I've been reading up on a lot of apps that disables the HTC Sense features (ie. Launcher Pro, Cyanogen ROM, etc).
I'm asking myself this question: What are the features of HTC Sense? What will we be missing if it's disabled? Smooth scrolling? Animations?
I read up on the HTC website but of course it's more marketing than informative *duh!*
Thanks for being patient with me

You'll get smoother animations and transitions between apps, but you can't use any HTC Sense widgets.

Thanks for the response zervic and Product F(RED)!
I just read the link that you provided. In summary, HTC Sense is just a smooth-scrolling, animated user-interface comprising of several applications & widgets for the Android, such as:
# Friend Stream
# Camera
# Gallery (Pictures)
# Calculator
# Calendar
# Desk Clock
# Contacts
# Music (player and library)
# Weather
etc.
That's it! Wonder what the big deal is…
Will anyone convince me I do not want to lose Sense at all?

The two main things that work in Sense but not in CM6/AOSP are Flash Lite and FM Radio. Flash Lite is HTC's proprietary "lite" version of Flash that will allow you to view some of the more basic types of Flash on webpages (but not things like streaming videos or music). It's kind of pointless though because that basically means the only thing you can view are Flash ads... lol. Personally I haven't missed it.
Anyway, there's no need to "convince" you. You should just do a Nandroid backup then install CM6. If you don't like it, just load the backup and you're right back where you started like nothing happened.

I have been meaning to ask this question but I don't want to open another thread so I will ask here.
I am leaning towards making the jump to CM6, but I keep seeing that it has no Flash Lite or Flash 10.
Can you elaborate on that a little more? Does that affect my web browser?
I had the Tilt and that didn't have Flash and web browsing sucked. Will I have to deal with that again? Thanks.

On Sense you can temporary disable Flash Lite through the browser settings, so if you're curious to see what it'd be like, just disable Flash Lite and see if it causes any problems for the sites you usually visit. Personally I don't think you'll miss it.

AOSP > Sense
Freedom > conformity
Sense is just HTCs way of making android their own. Using a rom without sense means you can make android your own instead of the way HTC thinks you want it. Samsung and Motorola both have their own versions as well (I'm sure others do too, but those are the only two I've others I've used. I personality prefer the extra customization you can achieve with an ASOP based rom. If that's not important then theres no reason not to stick with the stock sense ui.

The Aria is incapable of flash 10.

Hmm… Now I'm just speechless. I don't know what to say. Guess the best way is to flash different ROMs and try them out myself and see which ones I like best.
Thanks for participating people!

Not exactly. Adobe has designed Flash for Android to rely on an instruction set that is not supported by the Aria's processor. It would still be possible for Adobe to create another version of Flash that WOULD work on Aria in the future (for the sake of expanding Flash support to more devices), although to date they haven't really given any indication that they would do that. I just wanted to point out that there is some hope still, although I wouldn't call myself optimistic.

Yes, but the Aria's processor isn't fast enough for smooth playback anyways.

I had a stock Aria with Sense for several months and loved every bit of it...then I flashed Cyongenmod and I love it even more. Somethings arent as "pretty" as with sense but you get the added benefit of making it look the way you want. The level of customization is incredible and I dont miss Sense at all.
For those that miss the Sense weather/clock on the home screen, Just Google "Fancy Widget"...its exactly the same thing but without the cool weather animation thing that you get after unlocking from the lock screen. I think it was pulled from the market, but you can still find it. I have the apk if you cant.
Just do what others have said. Nandroid back up your current ROM, flash a new one and see how you like it for a few weeks. If you dont, go back to your old ROM. Its super easy.

It's fancy widget 1.30. Don't say you're going to offer out because that's part piracy. Pointing them in the right direction isn't breaking any rules though.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I tested out Sense without flash and the only site I really go to (a NBA forum) had problems because they usually post youtube videos of dunks or other plays embedded in the threads and they wouldn't show up. That sucks.
But I have seen so many really amazing customizations in the Home Screens thread that I will probably go to CM6. One more final on Monday and then I can get to messing around with my phone.
I just love what people have done with Clockr. And the sense weather animations are cool so I will miss those.

I guess you're right "Product F(RED)". It took me awhile to find it and I would like to provide it to anyone who is looking, but I see what you're saying and maybe its not a good idea. On another note, I did a little bit of research and the guys who made the one that was pulled have made a new one (still called Fancy Widget) that is on the market. It looks pretty nice and has a lot of features, but does not have the "flip clock" design that I like so much.

HTC Sense makes me want to die. Please help.

Hey, all. Long-time flasher, first(ish)-time poster. I think HTC Sense does a great deal of covering up for Windows Mobile, which is great... if you hate Windows Mobile. I don't. I love it. And that's all I want.
Right now I'm using Kumar's ROM on my HD2... hats off to all involved, by the way... but it's still not exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe what I'm looking for doesn't exist. I don't know. I'll get to the point.
Here's what I'm after: a stock Windows Mobile 6.5.3 ROM. I don't want any of the HTC Sense bull**** on there. Not Sense, not HTC's SMS/MMS app, none of it. I want strictly Windows Mobile. Does something like this exist already, and I'm just retarded/overlooking it?
Thanks in advance for any help here, all.

I was working on a ROM like that, but in the end decided it was easier to just take Kumar's ROM, and turn off Sense/HTC Messaging.
start->settings->home->Items, disable Sense, enable Windows Default
Ok... disabling Sense on the home screen is easy enough, that I've already done. The real thing I'm after is disabling their messaging client. It hurts to use, I die a little inside every time I'm forced to interact with it. How do you disable that?

Also, Kumar is working on a Titanium ROM without the HTC Sense apps (especially messaging). Or, you can try SPB Mobile Shell to see if that suits you, though it is a commercial product.
THANK YOU!
Holy Hell... you have no idea how good it feels to use the stock WinMo SMS/MMS app. Well, maybe you do. Either way, that's exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks again, man... and I will definitely keep an eye out for Kumar's Titanium ROM.

EnergyRom
NRGZ28 has a Titanium only rom with the HTC messaging already disabled by default. I would give that a look too
Oh brilliant, was hoping there'd be Titanium-only HD2 ROMs - I've got a TMoUS HD2 en-route at the moment, and although I've only played with M2D, I've never understood the fascination with TouchFlo. It's pretty, to be sure, but so memory-hungry and annoying to use. Although I suppose RAM-hogging won't be a factor when the HD2 has so much to spare, heh.
Link to HD2 EnergyROM w/Titanium-only version for anyone still looking.
Say, can anyone who loves Sense UI explain why? I'm just curious, having had bad experiences myself.

I love and hate sense.
As you can see from my signature, I use NRG's titanium ROMs on my TP2, because I get fed up of it, and it always feels slow.
The reason I loved it was the integration of everything in a today screen, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, all in one, along with weather, stocks and everything else I do daily .

For those who are interested, An updated Titanium ROM for TMOUS (Based on 23563) will be up before this weekend.

Not true at all. I'm not a big fan of sense. It's way more buggy than a lot of other great shells or ui's. I'm gonna start using SPB Mobile shell now that I've used sense for a few weeks to see if I grew to like it. I didn't.

Quite a few people have posted requesting Titanium-only ROMs, thats why several ROM chefs have started making them.
More people still prefer Sense, but there are plenty that do not.
Having actually gotten hold of said HD2 now, I'm really beginning to dig the Sense UI. It takes a bit of getting used to, and I think I'll be hunting for a ROM that has Titanium as well, in case I feel like switching between the two. The major advantages of Titanium are its low memory footprint, nifty clean look (Sense is not so clean, but it looks boring when it is) and having everything on a single screen, while having all the key information visible at a glance - the comm manager panel was the single most important app I had installed. But Sense does all of this too, with a few tweaks and some specific quick links. Although I'd really prefer to have comm manager status/links to favourite people/currently-playing music/new texts/new email/home tab visible all at the same time, I'm pretty sure I can deal with swiping to the left to get to Twitter, heh.
Funnily enough, my friends' reaction upon seeing Sense UI is "WOW, is that Android?"
I've built a rom with chuckys tools 23563 if you wanna try here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618787
i forgot to take out the htc dialler and that interferes with the reminder notification snoozing(gives you a choice of 5/10/15mins etc) so you might wanna google htc dialler disabler aswell.
Be aware i stripped out a lot of stuff with this so no opera or anything, i found it easier to try newer versions etc that way....
I feel you
Your post pushed me to find a way to do exactly what you're talking about. I love Titanium, and despise HTC Messaging.
I installed the Energy ROM ("standard" Sense build 23566) and it's perfect. Once you disable Sense you're good to go. HTC Messaging is not included! Fast, stable, and includes only minimal extra software. The default Start menu arrangement is excellent.
Cheers,
Rob

Schaps is still releasing TouchXperience???? When I started on this forum in 2007....I couldn't wait for Schaps to release that.....then for personal reasons, he was gone. I'm hoping you are saying he is going to release his 'latest' version....because if he still hasn't released his first version...yet...you may want to keep looking. I've always found his work very good....but the drama very high.
have you even heard of the home screen customizer?
it pretty much saves winmo6.5.
go into the Marketplace on your phone, and just search "home screen customizer".
it's amazing, hardly anyone finds it.

AOSP vs. Sense

I've been using HTC Sense since getting my Evo on launch day and have been loving it. However, I keep hearing about AOSP and how the much-awaited Cyanogen ROM that is in development is using it.
What are some of the key differences between both?!
someone should post a picture comparison of Sense vs AOSP so threads like these will stop being created.

It will happen no matter what..Its not like AOSP is something new. There are countless pics of AOSP on these forums already. Google pic search for AOSP and you will also find many.
You have to use a AOSP ROM to really know how much better then sense it really is. Sure you'll loose some fancy dancy widgets but I have found good replacements for all the ones I used.

It is a very different feel. I like clean/simple things (I like Apples computers and gadgets, for example) and to me AOSP has a more clean simple feel. I think Sense has a great look to it, but some of the bubbliness is tacky to me. The lock screen and rosie are nice, but most of the apps (calendar, RSS, etc.) and widgets are gaudy to me. I particularly dislike the bubble at the bottom to switch tabs thing, just ugly to me.
I also think there are some big UI mistakes in Sense. Editing a contact is confusing for instance.
However I do like the black notification bar, and I like Bugless Beast's launcher with a black google search bar.
In the end it is a matter of taste. One of the reasons I moved from my iPhone to an Android phone was to have more options in regards to this kind of stuff.

I'd rather post a quick question to people who are dealing with this frequently, than trawl the web, sift through junk and install something which has lots of bugs.
Cheer up, its not all bad.
Thanks for the link.
you'll have to forgive XDA, recently it has attracted many young people that get bullied at home and school, this is a place they can come and anonymously display their e-toughness. Just ignore them.
btw, i dont think there is a sense rom that has everything working like your stock version. i hope im wrong but i was interested in rooting to use sense, in the development section i couldnt find any that didnt have disclaimers about things that arent working, so i havent gotten to try it out yet. But again, maybe im wrong, and i hope i am.
Without a criteria of what he is looking for other than good and stable it's hard to give a good answer. It's not about e-toughness, it's about searching, putting together an informative post, and reading the forum rules.
'cymru' is 100% correct. All it took was a search and reading comments about what does and does not work, then nandroid backup and try the rom and see if it passes the "good and stable" test.

Well there are some roms that have ported sense camera, and apps.
I do believe my "The Official" rom has them. It didn't come stock with the sense camera, but I had it installed (easy to do from spare parts, plus I have 720p recording).
The best you can do is look for a rom with those things ported over.

Hi guys, if the battle for whos the cleverist is now over, heres some feed back for the advice given.
I've installed, Evils q&d sensefroyo. Been running it for a few days, its cool. A little buggy, a few force closes, high battery use, no bluetooth, but very usable.

Cheers.
I tried kingxclikz and Paul's r23 roms, I must say the first one is very buggy and there are no ways to use it even for 24h(though I think it needs an eclair radio),Paul's rom is way more stable but the lack of Metamorph themes, trackball mods and BT are too important.
He promised to release a new version soon so all we can do is wait and see!
Ughh. No BT on any sense ROM then?
Is anybody even working on bluetooth for Desire roms? I don't think anybody actually is. There are a few people I think might be capable like Paul but he's busy with other things now by the looks of it

[Q] Touchwiz petition?

Anyone think there would be a point in making a petition and sending it to Uncle Sammy, so that maybe in the future touchwiz would be an OPTION rather than mandatory?
I kinda think that samsung won't really listen but I'd be willing to give it a try.
Personally I'm going to be using LauncherPro on my Epic, but it would be nice to just shut off the touchwiz UI without rooting and flashing something new.

Unlikely..their goal is to try to improve TouchWiz till the point people like it..these kind of things heps sets manufacturers apart to the average consumer...overall though its not like TouchWiz 3.0 is bad..if anything most people hate it because either they are used to Sense, think it looks like an iphone, or used a previous TouchWiz and didn't like it...if you set this aside its pretty compatible to Sense, some even like it better...
But again..unlikely..
I don't see any problem with Touchwiz, I think it looks awesome, and if someone has a problem with the performance at all, they can just get a different phone. Touchwiz 3.0 has a ton of features that are just great to have, anyway, couldn't you just run a rom if you don't like it?

I doubt..that would undermine what Android is...remember Android isn't only used in cellphones...its used in car systems and other stuff..Google can't tell vendors to stop loading custom UIs...it would be silly...
You can remove touch wiz with root.

You can also just install another launcher and set it as default. LauncherPro, ADW, aHome... etc.

They didn't say they plan to stop/ban custom UI's.
They said they plan to make custom UI's unnecessary.
I don't think they have to get rid of touchwiz.. just make it optional. Rooting is pretty simple and i'll probably do it, but at the same time, why dont they give the user a choice? Like I said, i'll be using LauncherPro on mine, but I think the gesture would be nice on Sammy's part.

That's because Samsung uses TouchWiz, HTC uses Sense, Motorola uses Blur... it's their version. What you're asking is Honda to sell you a Civic but give you the option to use a Corolla engine... it can be done, but it must be swapped (rooted)
In my opinion TouchWiz > Sense and MotoBlur it's not that bad and honestly if you really don't like it just root the phone and install a custom ROM why petition over something so cosmetic you can petition for a GPS fix if you want to do something productive.

+1 ... except im Sense>TouchWiz/Blur
Stock AndroidUI > TouchWiz/Sense/Blur
Moto is apparently dropping blur though. If only they would drop that stupid damn bootloader now.

Is there something wrong with its GPS?
Edit: Nevermind. I should have read the "GPS Fail" thread before posting that question! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756026
just install another home screen and make it default

Got proof? Because I don't think that's going to happen.
Gingerbread will improve on Android's basic UI. The way buttons\menus look. The status bar. Etc. You bet your ass manufacturers are still going to load on their custom UIs. HTC has already said that they will include sense when they update their phones to Android 3.0.
I'm going to have to agree with everyone else. If you don't like TW3, install Launcherpro or ADW. Wait for a custom rom which gets rid of TW3 (like senseless roms for EVO). It's only a matter of time before the Cyanogen team puts out a 100% AOSP rom for it anyway. But for those who don't liek rooting... Launcherpro.

The proof is in the videos google made when they were showing off Android 2.2... they said it themselves in the video, I'd search for it but the video is long as hell
see this thread
thought I'd update this thread to point to another more recent thread: How to disable touchwiz
To be honest, Touchwiz is my favorite UI I've used.
Thats above Sense, MotoBlur, Stock, etc.
Always have been a fan of the color themes, love the lockscreen, the dialer, and even coming to like the ****ty horizontal app drawer.
If Samsung can improve Touchwiz to have the media player and other features that are on the other Galaxies, it would be even better!
I was going to say, it's easy enough to turn off. Yeah, I don't care for it, but it's not a big deal to make the vanilla launcher the default one. You don't have to install or remove anything, or need root.

Thoughts on MIUI Rom

I'm sure I will get flamed but here goes anyway. Everyone is jumping on to the MIUI bandwagon, and yes in my opinion it does have a few cool features, but not enough to win me over. Am I the only one on XDA that kind of dislikes this rom? I've tried to like it but I just can't. I like roms that tend to be more stock anyway, I think modded froyo such as enom's rom and cyanogenmod etc. have all of the features and beauty that I need. I see a lot of people saying think iOS and Android together! If I wanted iOS I would own an iPhone and not a N1.
I understand it is all preference and whatnot, but I can't be the only one who hates the MIUI interface. FM Radio cool! Interface not cool! I know I can install other launchers but to me that kind of defeats the whole purpose of running this rom.
I'm not going to mess with it anymore, I just wanted to give it a chance.
Am I the only one who doesn't care for this rom?
Sorry for the rant
It's okay. I dont hate or like it
Haven't tried it. It looks nice and well done but the iOS styling doesn't draw me in
Think I'm gonna try it, but I'm with you flapjaxx

Probably.. I just don't see what the big deal is about this rom. I posted in the general forum so I am allowed to express an opinion/vent a little about a rom thats getting a lot of attention and I personally don't see what all the hype is about.
By the way you did read and reply to my thread.
Yea you're correct in stating that installing other launchers defeats the purpose. I liked it for about a week but went back cyan...now i'm on micromods hybrid...for me the sense roms got me hyped up. If the Mui wasnt iphone'd up then it would actually be really sweet but that whole iphone thing just ruins the experience and awww of having an android device
I agree with you OP. I dont like it at all. Now the fact they made a new UI is cool, but like OP said, if I wanted iOS, I would have bought an iPhone
haha fair enough.
I am not too big on the iphone icons either. However, I do like the lock screen, speed, and the battery life.
Also it isnt as obvious as in cyan, but it does have .flac support and will stop playing music when you disconnect. However it will not play upon reconnecting.

The lock screen is slick. It does seem speedy, I can't confirm battery life only because I wasn't able to use it long enough to really wear on a battery. I do appreciate that there are so many choices with custom roms and the dev team that created this rom has obviously worked hard and it shows. That is the beauty of android, so many choices. It is a very pretty rom no doubt, but I just prefer a more stock type interface.
The MIUI ROM looks nice, but I also prefer a stock, simple look. Im happy to see them pushing the envelope though.
the big hype is because MIUI is a complete overhaul, different than what we are used to. Sometimes a change once in awhile is good, and MIUI is a great change I jump from cyan to MIUI. FM radio, lockscreen, and the UI is amazing, I do prefer different style icons but that's about it
It's a very, very optimized ROM. Battery life, speed, the super-neat toggles in the notification tray. You can just install another launcher and still benefit from all of the above plus the great lock screen, FM radio, and excellent phone/SMS/contact apps.
I Agree, with launcher it's really a nice rom !!
I like the resent part who include a task killer.

I like the UI, but i miss a few features from CM.
CM with the MIUI launcher would be great.

And who told you that you have to use it and are not allowed to use anything else???
If you don't like it use something different. Whats the problem?
I don't like pink colored t-shirts so i don't wear them. I don't blame anybody else that wears pink t-shirts. I don't tell anyone that I hate them. I just don't wear them.
Same thing for you, if you don't like MIUI Rom don't use it. Try it, if you don't like it restore nandroid backup and forget about it...
And shut up, keep it for yourself that you don't like it.

Umm...dont use it then?
Just want to say I tried the port for my Inc, but went back to cm6.
Though I don't feel as if its my flavor of ROM, I do want to say it is very innovative, and probably the first (at least on ROMs for the Inc) of its kind to really truly redesign the interface.
So while I don't use it, I would definitely like to see more transformations of this kind.

Well i guess you have a wrong concept of the MIUI rom. It is not because of the launcher ppl like the rom. But because of the tweaks. till now there are no roms to my knowledge where you could change the lockscreen within the android os. ( i am not talking of 3rd party apps like widget locker....., here it's different. it's the native one being modified. ) we havent been able to change native phone and contact.apk, we were just applying themes. but the MIUI is different. Even when you go to settings in the menu, you'll observe how things get snappier and all bouncy. Not to mention the little menu's in the lockscreen ( now being seen in the sense HD), answer&reject mods when receiving calls... and the FM radio which were unknown and still being documented in the xda community. Basically everything has been modifies here, even the mms.apk.
so i guess it is wrong to make such an assumption based only on the launcher which ressembles the iphone. I have been using the MIUI with launcher pro and I had amazing battery life.
If you do not like a rom , just don't use it. Why dont u make another thread saying that rodriguezstyle is too greenish or micromod's roms are too glassy ( sorry chefs , lol . it was just to make my point). or maybe somebody else should start another thread saying i hate stock looking roms! Of course you can come up with all these talks that xda is a community forum, everybody has the right to bla bla bla , democracy.... and you do have the right but it is all about MANNERS and RESPECT here! You do not critise someone's work ( which you are getting for free btw) just because of ur taste!!
