Thinking about buying a Galaxy Tab - Galaxy Tab General

Hello. I'm a noob to the Galaxy tab. I'm thinking about picking one up (i'm in the U.S., from Los Angeles Area) and just wanted to clarify. I know the European version can be used as a phone but i'm unsure of the tmobile U.S. version. From what I've read, i've found that the Tmobile U.S. version can be used as a phone as well but it needs to be rooted? I just wanted to clarify if this is true or not. This is kind of a deal breaker for me and i may just get a huwaei s7 if there is no phone functionality (without rooting it)

You have to root and flash on the euro software.

The Huawei S7? I thought that thing was supposed to be pretty awful, no?

I played with one at Best Buy and it is horrid!

I have had a tab for 2 weeks now. I am very satisfied amd would recommemd it. It is bette than the ipad. It can make phone calls and very fast. I am browsing xda on it too with the xda app.

I've heard mixed reviews about the s7. Some hate it, others rave that its the best tablet for your buck. i'm going to try one out. Its 299 at best buy, unlocked without a contract and it has voice calling out of the box. The tab does have that ability, but stateside you'd have to root the galaxy tab and install the euro software to enable that feature, which is something i don't want to do.

i bought mine unlocked for £469 in uk (carphone warehouse) it has been widely promoted throughout the uk. imo, i think that it is a fantastic piece of hardware. the only concern i have with it is the lack of apps. yes, Android has a growing market, bug half the apps are useless. on the ipad, all apps have to pass a test. long story short. if you want more games and apps i recommend another tablet (ipad) if you want a smaller lightweight device go with the tab. web browsing on it is amazing. good luck if you need anymore help you can ask me

Agreed, the S7 thing is just not well made or fast enough to be useful

And what's the big deal about rooting? It's reversible.

You do realize that rooting your Tab is as simple as installing an app from the Market and tapping the 'root' button, right? There's even an 'unroot' button right next to it if you need to reverse it.

Why don't you get asian or european one? in India i got it for approx 700USD, no lock no agreement nothing and all functions working
Cheers

did not realize that. i've hacked other various devices and was just tired of going through the process of doing so. I wanted something that I could just use out of the box, but if this is the case then i'll have to reconsider. Can you utilize tmobiles 3g or 4g with the euro software?

Hey, I just got the Galaxy Tab unlocked from sprint two days ago but did have to buy a month of 3g. My question is, since I bought it off contract can I use Verizon with it when my month with sprint is up?
also, is there a better way for rooting other than those one click apps? I tried one once for my moto droid but went back to doing it properly with abd because the one click seemed kind of sloppy and half-a$$ed

No, you can not use a Verizon device on Sprint, or vice versa. They will NOT allow an ESN from another carrier to be active on their network. Should have went with T-Mobile or AT&T if you wanted carrier portability.
And don't compare your Droid **** with what the Galaxy devs have cooked up. This ain't a Motorola device, for one thing (thank God!).

I havent compared my "droid ****" to anything...I said that I prefer using adb and RSD Lite over one click rooting apps, referencing to my Droid only vaguely in passing. As for choosing the Sprint version...shame on me for being unclear as to the specifics of various different mobile technologies and their interoperability, or lack thereof. I suppose that is why I casually asked about it here.
Lighten up, you phone nerd.

I spilled my ice tea reading the "Droid ****" comment. Imagine the Motorola commercial saying, "Drrrrooid Sssshhhhiit"

Give you mi two cents.
Let me begin asuring you that i am the antyfanboy. If something doesnt satisfy me 100% it gets sold within the week. Foolling myself is something i dont do.
So when i heard about the tab i was rather exceptic for several reasons.
1.price
2.no superamoled
3.being samsung after i suffered the horrible galaxy s.
4. In general not many positive reviews.
So when i had one for testing i was pleasently surprised. One of the overall best gadgets i have tried. And i have tried many.
Even the screen that as i said it not superamoled is in my opinión an excellent screen that doesnt have nothing to envy the one i have in my ipad.
In conclusion, if you want or need a mobile device to work on the go evwrywhere with easy, this is it.

G1 died today.....what phone to get

So ya i was hoping my G1 would survive till an android phone with the 1ghz cpu was released to t-mobile in store, but it didn't make it. Unfortunately i cant get the Nexus in the t-mobile store, which i think was a terrible idea on google's side, but whatever. What other android phone you guys think would be a great device to have?
got the wife a Behold 2, and its AWESOME.....after i rooted it and put a custom rom on it. The mytouch is ok. reminds me a lot of the G1. Ill never buy a motorola product ever again.......does anyone know of any other android devices coming out for t-mobile anytime soon?
thanks a ton for the time!
cheers!
The HD2? It's Winmo but these clever minds here on XDA will soon put Android on it, I'm pretty sure.
I felt the MT3G is a vast difference from G1, and you can check out the 1.2 version as well.

It sounds like we may be in similar situations, this is what I am thinking:
Im wondering the same thing. i have a mytouch, and wife now needs a new phone. Not getting the nexus bc of the family plan we have, and not gonna spend $500 on it.
Since it does not look like tmobile is coming out with any new (nexus like performance) phones really soon, this is what I think we are going to do, maybe good for you too:
I think we are going to find a mytouch on craigslist (like mine). hopefully for around $150. root it so that it runs good, and wait for tmobile to come out with something good, then use upgrade to get discount on new phone. Then sell the mytouch (purchased from craigslist) on ebay for about the same, if not more...
sounds like we are in the similar situations, so figured i would share about the only option I can see would be good. What do you think? good luck

No, it was a very good idea. T-Mobile would lock it down and not let it be used on any other carrier, without unlocking. I'm sure you know that a large portion (probably around 60 - 70%, if not, more) of all cell phone users have never even HEARD of unlocking. Not being on just one carrier = more buyers. More buyers = more money.

Aside from the CDMA junk, both GSM versions are happy to work on other networks, not just the one whose 3G band is compatible.
I.e., the tmobile3G version is compatible with ATT2G, and the ATT3G version is compatible with tmobile2G. They are both compatible with INTERNATIONAL2G and some 3G.
Further, if you decide to go to.... europe, or wherever, with an unlocked phone, you can buy a LOCAL SIMCARD and it will work IFF your phone is unlocked.
But there is MORE TO BEING UNLOCKED than just sim-unlocked. There is also FIRMWARE unlocked, and with GN1, it is TRIVIAL -- "fastboot oem unlock" is the command. This allows you to load CUSTOM FIRMWARE to the device.... which is not possible with a carrier-branded device.
If you like the phone, buy it from google. They are a very reputable seller.
Expect this in the future though: as 2G dies away, you will start to see 3G-only devices with full 6-band 3G radios -- 850/900/1700/1800/1900/2100. These devices, when they appear, will be universal.

Did you bother to even read wtf you quoted? That's one of the most pathetic responses I've ever had the pain of reading.
Unless I misunderstood what you're trying to say. As of now... That's exactly what I said. They make more money like that instead of it just being T-Mobile. Or are they about to start putting out a different phone better than N1?

No, the Desire is going to be exclusive to Verizon in the US, thus cannot be used on T-Mobile because it is CDMA.
HD2
Heck yeah the HD2 is awsome, even though its not android. Like somebody above said people here at XDA will find a way to put android on it. That HUGE screen is amazing.
If you ask T-Mobile they are sure to say that one of their "lovely" blur devices is what you want, kindly kick their shin and spit on them if they do
and then Toot and, oh, I apologize, TWEET and inform us what phone you got on your way to jail.

JUST FYI, NO U.S.A carriers has been announced for the Desire or Legend and since HTC wants this to be their "super phone" it will most likely be GSM since it will be world compatible (on edge anyway) You are probably thinking about the HTC Incredible (A completely different phone)
Any way I would go with the HTC HD2 since it is a great device and there will be an android rom for it one day and when a great android phone comes out for t-mobile just sell the HTC HD2 (someone will buy it on XDA, you should get around $300 for it if you take care of it)
Get the DROID! It didnt sell over 1 million units in 74 days for nothing. i know you dont like Moto

moto isn't a good company. They been saying for a few months that the droid will get the 2.1 update in a week but it has been pushed back a lot of times. They finally pushed the update but to the milestone (droid's name for other countries) so now the droid users are pissed.
I would only choose moto for an android phone as a last resort because HTC is the brand for me.
WOW! The HTC Legend looks amazing!!

I thought the supersonic/EVO was the android version of HD2.
only thing I like about the HD2 is how big the screen is...yet so thin like a razor, but I'd much rather wait...even if the devs dished out a android rom for it tonight, I don't want to waste my upgrade on a WMO phone regardless of it's value or capability...simply because I'm stubborn
As far as the Desire goes, I believe it will be coming to T-mobile and if not, more likely a universal unlocked release like the N1...but as far as the Verizon only rumor, bullsh*t. HTC would never let me down like Moto did with the Droid
I have had up close experience with the N1, (friend of mines owns it), lovely phone, simply the best Android has to offer right now until proven otherwise by a later release, but I'm not going for it
If I'm going dish $500 bucks or more for something it will most def. be the Desire...because that is what I desire

Which is the best tab to get?

Hey guys, wondering which version of the tab is the best to get, eg: the one that has least trouble flashing and will work in most places.
Reason i ask is that a friend of mine is looking at getting one after playing with mine but he has just gone to the US for a couple weeks. Should he get a tab up there, or one when he comes back to Australia?
it would be a P1000T if he was to get one down here (same as mine)
Thanks
I would have gotten AT&T (my cell carrier), but I wanted to pay it off over several months, so I bought the Sprint version with my Best Buy CC. I do love that glossy white back surface.
Oh, and I'm using mine as Wi-Fi only, so I don't worry about paying a month carrier fee. Can always tether my phone if I need something and I'm not near a AP.
Sprint is getting much less dev love, but it is much newer.
Sprint better video? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10370530&postcount=11
More storage in non PCS ones.
I would rate the Sprint tab as dead last, *if* want you want to do is uncripple it and re-ROM it.
Sprint crippled the ability to pair and connect bluetooth keyboards and mice to it. Also, each day I check in vain for Clockwork Recovery love for the Sprint version, and no ROMs around as yet. :-(
Wait till he gets back to Australia as the voice app have been disabled on us models and would need some hacking whereas the aus one wouldn't as far as im aware!

SGS2 and AT&T Questions Thread - I have A lot of questions!!

Howdy,
Full disclosure - I plan to cross post this thread of different Android forums, so don't get irritated with me!
A little back story - I've been an Iphone owner since the beginning and truly love the Apple ecosystem. However, I started to get downright bored with the phone and the restrictions placed upon it. I'm sorry but if you are not "allowed" to even custom change your SMS tone what does that say? Plus....I have an Ipad
Now, I have the Samsung Infuse (AT&T) and I love it. However, I one that likes to have the latest and greatest and am willing to pay the money for it. Also, if I am going to be locked into AT&T for at least 2 years, I want a phone that is future proof. Now, I know the Galaxy S2 is suppose to come out soon, however, I am currently in my 30 day window and may not be able to wait that long. Therefore, my plan is to by the Galaxy S2 while I still keep my Infuse and test them both over the next 30 days.
With that said, I have a couple of questions:
1. I'm live in TN, so of course I will be buying unlocked to use on AT&T. What do I have to do to make the Galaxy work? Can I just put my current sim card into that phone?
2. What are the downsides to buying a phone unlocked? Who takes on the responsibility if something happens to it? I do plan to buy insurance.
3. Which vendor would you buy from? I'm leaning towards Amazon but am open to other options.
4. Have any of you all done a test drive as I plan to do but sent back because you didn't want? Will the company take it back?
5. Should I expect to have the same fast speeds with the S2 as I have now with the Infuse? or will there be a downgrade in service because it's unlocked?
6. S2, Infuse, or Iphone....that is the question?????
7. MOST IMPORTANT - How is call quality and GPS functionality. I need both to be on point.
9. Any app incompatibility issues with the phone? Gingerbread?
Thank you all soooooooooooo kindly for helping me. I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.

Yes. It works out of the box. You can also save some money by telling AT&T you're replacing the Infuse with a Motorola Krzr and changing to the dumb-phone $10.00 per month unlimited data plan. Do a search for more info.

You can't buy insurance. If you buy it from either Handtec or Clove in the UK or Expansys-USA it'll be covered by Samsung's two year warranty. All others, you're on your own.

Nothing specific or out of the ordinary has been reported. If there's apps that are critical for you post them and ask if others have used them successfully.
There are some other benefits. Since the phone's carrier unmolested there are no software or hardware changes made to it. You also get updates directly from Samsung which seem to be coming with incredible speed.

Thank you Barry! Very helpful answers except for number 6! No. 4 is the reason I probably won't buy. I just don't want to be stuck with a phone I may not like. Decisions..decisions
Purchased mine from Handtec, and it was shipped right after it was released in the UK. I can't see myself ever buying another AT&T branded & neutered/downgraded subsidized phone ever again.
The phone is simply awesome. In a sense, this is the first time I've felt a device *could* last me longer than the usual 1 year refresh cycle. Reason for this is simply because of its sheer processing power. For instance, I just revised my framework-res.apk file last night to have the browser ALWAYS load the desktop version of websites instead of the dumbed down mobile websites that both Android and Apple devices default to. I can actually do this and live with the performance because unlike other phones, desktop version of websites on the SGSII are no slower than the mobile/wap versions... they are as fast and fluid as viewing them on a notebook computer. And, this is even before the SGSII's hardware is properly supported as I believe the current Gingerbread 2.3.3 OS doesn't fully support dual core quite yet.
The only downfall I see is what I'm experiencing with my 2 buddies (previous IPhone users) that I talked into getting an SGSII. Don't get me wrong, they love the phone and would never see themselves going back to Apple. But, they now have to rely on me to do a lot of the tweaking for them because editing system files, decompiling/editing/compiling apks, flashing with Odin... they simply aren't comfortable with all that yet, especially since Apple handed them everything on a silver platter (to which they blindly accepted everytime). They'll get there, but for the time being, I've been labeled the local Android Guru/Master/Swamy/etc.
Other than those points, I echo Barry's feedback verbatim. And, I do hope your Mom is more attractive than Barry, I can barely stand the sight of him on a good day.

I was kidding with 6. It's obviously a personal decision. See if anyone that lives near you or in a city that you travel to will let you play with theirs. I love my phone, it's rock solid, and can't think of anything I'd want instead. But again, that's just a personal opinion.

Dreaming about the Note!

I held a Note at the local cellular store the other day and I thing I fell in love. I currently have a Galaxy S and I do love it (Except the crappy GPS) but my contract is up next November and I started to see what is out there and what is coming out in the near future.
As my motto is The Bigger the Better when is comes to screen size (with-in reason) I wondered if the Note would be too big. But, it's not. I really like the size and it fits in my pockets as well.
So, last night I had a dream I lost my Galaxy S and I was running all over trying to find it, going out of my mind. The next thing, I tripped and my phone jumped out of a secret pocket (it's a dream remember) and when I picked it up, it was a Galaxy Note.
My contract is up when the Note will be about a year old. Does Has anyone heard if a new version is coming around that time? I know it's a while away, but I am curious.
Thanks,
Ian
no news about the next Note, but given the fanfare this version has received, it's nearly inevitable that there will be one. just hang on
One thing I've learned: It's simply not worth it to wait for month and hope. Just go for it and be happy...
@GPS: I've got my Note yesterday, so I could'nt test it properly yet. But one thing surprised me today: I walked to a local grocery store and used the app "GPS status & toolbox". I started it and had 5 seconds (no lie!) later a fix with 17 satellites! Holy crap, that was quick!

This is great to hear. My GPS only works with a ROM from Europe. I have never had GPS with the stock BMC (Canada) ROM.
Hey, leppo, how does your GPS work with the Canadian version? Are you still on the stock ROM?

i ordered the international version from an importer nearby, and the gps is amazing... very similar experience to the above poster. if you want to know how the Bell/Telus/Rogers version performs, head over to the Note i717 (AT&T) forum. they're the same thing.
I dreaming about one too.... Still using a Omnia II with WM6.5. Got another year to wait on my contract (corporate, no early upgrade options) tempted to just buy one and then wont have to be locked into another contract for a while.

I felt the EXACT SAME WAY, because it hadn't even been a year yet since I bought my HTC HD2, but after I lost it, I went ahead and bought the note.
Trust me when I tell you this, IT WAS WORTH IT. The note is the best toy you can buy, until the note 2 comes out. And even then, the note will hold you over until the note 3 comes out. Even with it's imperfections, the note is badass.

Actually, I got it through a clever dealer who arranged for me to get a Nexus on 3yr subsidy with Bell, then swapped it for this Note. I paid $140 for it, including the price to get the Nexus
The Note has GPS and the russian GLONASS (GPS is american). More satelites = faster and more reliable.

I literally had a dream about one....lol....now that dream is becoming a reality International White version will be here Monday
I' m dreamin about one too. I'm an illustrator, and i saw some awesome artwork on this forum. My contract is until september, so i,m closer to get mine. I was wondering the same thing about a new version. I'm sure there will be a new note in 2013.
anyone know where ot get an unlocked, no Bell bloatware version in Canada?
I got mine through a company called "Mobile DNA", which is a store in Richmond BC. They can be found on facebook... Though there are undoubtedly some stores nearer to you.

If you're going to buy the Note, I suggest you do what leppo did and get the international version. If the Bell/Rogers version is the same as the AT&T version, it has the Snapdragon 1.5GHz dual core processor which I read is not as fast as the Exynos Dual-core 1.4GHz processor.
Are you going to root your Note? If so, use Titanium Back-up to remove all the bloatware you don't want. I do that, I remove all the software that comes with Android I do not use.
Ian
Mobile DNA is only BC, not Ontario, but thanks. I would like to get the international version if at all locally as I don't like the wait! Not sure about rooting it yet, I'm thinking I'll just play around with it for a while before rooting it or flashing it.
This is one of the threads I started when I was dreaming about the GNote :

I've had my note for about a week, and am loving it. My previous phone was a Galaxy S2, and the note feels like a big upgrade. I've noticed that GPS locks on super fast - faster than any other GPS I've used including Garmin units.

Just received my AWESOME Galaxy Note wich I bought blindly, and I'm already loving IT!!!
My old Galaxy S1 feels so little, it looks like a silly toy now!!!
I LOVE IT!!!
BTW what a GPS!!!!
Well, dished out the big bucks and bought the Note yesterday. I could see how i may not need my ipad too much after this

[Q] Just bought S7 Edge, still in my return period. Switch to 10 (VZW) for root?

I'm coming from an iPhone so I have no brand/device loyalty, but root/jailbreaking is high priority for me. It doesn't seem like the S7e has any advantages over the 10 besides screen (honestly not the biggest fan of the curved screen anyway). Should I make the switch?
Yes.

Lol, iPhone 6 Plus here as well. And I can't wait to get rid of this overpriced junk. I can't do crap with IOS like what I can do on Android. #power10 it is.....beside I never fall for S7 or edge when it first release. I'm glad hTC waited.
I returned my s7e today and ordered the 10; I found that unless you have the hands of a giant, you will continually hit the edges and cause miss types/screen jumps. I also couldn't deal with the lack of ad blocker and the DPI was too big, even with the new native scaling. AND I thought the curved edges would be in addition to the screen, but they really occupied about 1/8" on either side.
I agree with everything you said, Rus. I ended up returning it and getting on that pre-order train too!! What whatt

Remember phones bought from Verizon store/online are IMEI blacklisted from using HTCdev. It will probably come with a ton of Verizon bloat. It is also not a guarantee to be able to get root. It could come in a week, or could take a year like the M9.or maybe never. A java card could also possibly work but not a 100% yet. Due your research, only way to guarantee root is by ordering from HTC's website. Just FYI.

So all I need to do is select the Verizon option on their website, right?

Sadly no, only thing that will get you is the uh-oh protection. The unlocked version "might" work on Verizon but we wont know until someone try's it and sees if it has the CDMA radios. On paper with the posted specs it should but in my experience with verizon you may never know. They got the money to bully company like HTC to do what they want. take a read at this forum for more info.http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/unlocked-htc-10-verizon-t3357874

****in hell man, all I want is a rootable phone through my current provider, haha. Either that or a quality Nexus that isn't a phablet to make me jump to Fi.

Yeah Verizon is the devil. Finally making the switch myself to ATT. I am done with the hoops you have to jump through to get access to the device you own. The Verizon version of the M9 gave quite a bit of trouble to get root but @jcase and the sunshine team finally did it so they may still have a trick up their sleave to get root on the Verizon 10 without using HTVdev to unlock the boot loader. Sadly the only way to 100% guarantee root with Verizon is a nexus. Don't give up home there are a lot of very talented devs on here but sadly its never a guarantee and can take time.
I just did my preorder through VZW. I know the risks as far as maybe not being able to unlock/root., but I just paid off my LG v10 for this because I know HTC, and I will get something going. I hope the great developers from the M8 series are here .
I may be a bit too excited for thursday to get here....
