Cheapest data plan? - G2 and Desire Z General

Hey guys, I was just wondering how much you guys pay for the data plan? I heard T-Mobile has an unlimited Android web plan for $20, does that include the HSPA+ network? I also hear some people getting it for $10 saying it's a really crappy phone. Also will the g1 data plan work for the g2's hspa+ network?
Thanks!

As far as I know there are three available data plans.
$10 should be the regular plan for basic phones, not smart phones
$20 should be for the phones that support wifi but have a 5gb limit before throttling
$30 should be the android data plan with the hrsp+ deal and I've heard that you can hit 10gb before tombile considers throttle your speed
That's just based on what I've read on forums and junk.

Thanks for the reply, oh man $30 a month for HSPA+? Looks like I'll just stick with the $20 after a month or two. Thanks!

and if you buy a phone at full price, the cheapest data plan can be $25 (no unlimited text). the cheapest call plan is $29.99.
actually, if you make 2-year contract, the cheapest total plan will be $79.99? month-to-month is $25 cheaper a month over next 24 months. so total 2 year saving will be about $600.
it can cover the full price of phone.
in addition, you can add/drop data plan anytime and they charge daily proportion of $25. if you are usually just home/office where wifi is there on weekdays but going out of town on weekend, you can add data plan online on friday and cut on sunday.
moreover, even if you don't have a data plan, you can access to the internet for $1.99/MB for emergency.
and T-mo has no interest installment. if you buy G2 now, you pay $70+ for first payment + tax, then start paying $25 from january for 19 months.

Thanks for the reply, MassimoM2! Sadly, I can not get the contract as I might switch carriers any time. The emergency $1.99/MB is interesting, I have a g1 without a data plan, and it tells me I will need a data plan to use the internet.
My main plan is to buy it for the full retail price and see whichever is the cheapest way to get internet. Looks like I will get the 24.99 plan since I already have text, thanks!

Great news for Loyal T-Mobile customers - Unlimited DATA PLAN for $20 a month

Just got off chat with t-mo. Below is part of the transcript. Important lines are in bold.
kcaj32: I have one more question about that account
kcaj32: the new line I added is an HD2
tmo CS: I can see that you are typing. I just want to let you know I am still here.
kcaj32: a good friend of mine also has the HD2 and he told me that you guys have a new unlimited data plan for $20 a month for that phone instead of the $30 I had to sign up for. He told me that he already switched to the $20 unlimited data for smartphones plan. Can you add that to my new line instead of the $30 plan?
kcaj32: The line I'm talking about is 916-xxx-xxxx
tmo CS: I will check to see if that feature is available for your account. It may take me a few moments.
kcaj32: ok
tmo CS: That feature is available for that line. I have changed that over for you.
kcaj32: ok thats great. I just got an sms too saying that a web plan was changed.
kcaj32: So is this available for everyone? or just some selected people?
tmo CS: It is only available to long time loyal customers.
kcaj32: ok
Got the news from : http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/HTC-HD2/New-20-Preferred-Smartphone-Unlimited-Web-for-HD2/td-p/360447
I logged into my primary account (android line) and I have the @20 a month option there too.
I havea grandfathered Family plan:
700 min
Unlimited Nights & Weekend
MyFavs on all lines (works great with Google Voice)
and now $20 data on all lines
This is the same plan as the $34.99 plan minus the $14.99 unlimited message option so if you had text before switching and are still using text, expect a huge bill at the end of the month.
The $30 plan does not include messaging at all. the plan with unlimited messaging is $35 a month. I have an older plan on my android with unlimited web and 400 messages for $25. And the messaging works for me on my Google Voice account.

Unlimited messaging? no no no....
This is the way the contract is structured for the 2yr
$30 data plan (mandatory)
$10 messaging (optional)
$59.99 for voice (cheapest one you can actually get)

When I signed up for the new line I was offered
$35 for unlimited messaging and data
OR
$30 for unlimited data only
But I guess it you want unlimited messaging as well, you should be able to add it to the $20 account for another $10. That is still $5 less than new customers.
This would be good for me. Been with T-mo for ~7 years and I have the unlimited family loyalty plan (offered before the all-unlimited plans were available) with the $20 addition for unlimited texts. If I can cut my HD2 bill from $25 to $20, I'll take it.
Oh, and, has anybody noticed there's a $5 charge for some sort of device insurance? I've yet to call T-mo and ask about it, but I tried to remove it myself from my plan and I can't. Both of those would be $10 less a month, which, out of my $250~ a month bill, is kind of welcome.

Device insurance is just that. It insures you for any lost or broken device, but I think there is a deductible involved in getting a replacement.
The new insurance rate for HD2 is $7 a mo... if you have it for $5, I'd say keep it (only if you plan on using it in the future)
And $250 a month? how many lines is that? and is it unlimited talk on all lines?
If I'm reading this right, the $30.00 Data Plan includes Web access and personal e-Mail (POP3 or IMAP). The $20.00 Data Plan is only Web access, no personal e-Mail. Niether plan has anything to do with text messages (SMS) or picture messages (MMS). Those are under some other add on plan. I got grandfathered with unlimited text messages for families for $9.99 and can see no reason to change it.
I just tested the $20 plan with a POP3 account and it worked just fine. Its just a discounted plan they are offering to their old customers.

Older customers being the key word here. I had an account with TMO for close to 5 years and now these bozos cannot even find it to allow me to SIM unlock my device...
I hate tmous more and even more every day...
I went to MyTmobile.com, signed in, clicked the manage my plan, shared services, Line specific services. The "preferred" web option was available on my primary smart phone line. I selected it and submitted, then got confirmation. I went back and repeated for my secondary smart phone line, then for my 1st family add-a-line dumb phone line. Total knocked off my bill... $25 a month (two smart phones @ $10 savings each, and one "phone first" @ $5 savings.)
Unlimited Text messaging is included in my family plan.
I hope any trade off for the "preferred" web plan is worth the money. Tmobile USA's normal "Unlimited" is 5Gb a month at full speed, then throttled down above that (no extra fees for being excessive users.) I hope preferred "unlimited" still is.
With the phone first plans, a semi-smart phone as an add-a-line with unlimited web comes out to just $10 extra a month ($5 for add-a-line, $5 for unlimited web). Tmobile considers two semi "internet capable" proprietary OS touchscreen phones as "phone first"... Samsung Highlight and Tmo Tap. Its a shame neither can be ROM flashed to a better OS.
The also have the Nokia Nuron with Symbian with a $10 data plan. Unfortunately the Nuron does not have Wifi. and has a very small screen. I looked at it in costco and it seemed pretty small although it was 3.2". Was looking for my Wife.

Been with TMo for years (I think since they existed.....8-9 years), and I checked and I have that option as well. Currently I have the Unlimited Data + Texts for $35.
I'm thinking of switching to the $20 Preferred Data Plan and the $10 1000 texts for a total of $30 ($5 Savings).
Are we sure that there is no difference between the data plans?
"Preferred Smartphone Unlimited Web Only
Smartphone Unlimited Web Only"
"T-Mobile Smartphone Unlimited Web
For people who love having the Web and e-mail at their fingertips. Includes unlimited Web access and unlimited personal e-mail."
Always looking for some monthly savings
nothing beats the 5.99 unlimited Tzones..
Just got off the phone with a CC rep and as most here have stated it is the same as the $25 web plan just cheaper
And for the Nokia Nuron....it is one of a couple of phones that get the $10 plans for what ever reason.....maybe because the download speeds are super slow My GF had one and the speeds on it sucked and the text messaging was pretty buggy....she ended up returning it.
Thanks for the heads up. I can also confirm that the CC rep told me there are no differences in speeds.
Just switched to the $20 Preferred Unlimited Data and $5 for 300 Texts (is it me or was there a 500 texts for $5......). Saves $10 a month, hopefully I won't go over the 300 texts.....500 would be perfect.

4 lines. the family plan is 90,unlimited
talk only on 2 lines, each additional line is 40, 20 for unlimited text on all lines. 20 unlimited web on my line and 30 unlimited blackberry web on another. plus the 5 insurance. 245.
I'm thinking of switching to the even more plus, i lose subsidy for upgrades, but it's cheaper, 140 2 lined unlimited text and web and calls, plus 30 for two more lined unlimited calls and text. 200, i do mind losing the subsidies, so maybe I'll get new phones subsidized and then switch (you're still bound by the contract, but It's less month to month)
oh and i got offered the 20 plan online, turns out i had android web and it was incompatible, so i was forced to chose the cheaper plan, no complaints, i hope it fixes the slow connection i have though (100 kbps down on 3g)
Wonder if it is really for long term customers or Tmo is just hooking up us HD2 owners

Switching from Sprint to T-Mobile - Question

Planning to buy the MyTouch 4G off contract and use the Even More Plus plan.
Currently the Unlimited Text + Data + 500 Min = $59.99
But it looks like T-Mobile will be coming out with new tiered data plans on Nov 14th with no restrictions on smartphones and plans:
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/11/t-mobile-adding-data-plan-to-new-data-lineup/
Will I be able to switch to the new data plan (ie. $10-15 for 200MB) once the new plan comes out (so $39.99 for Text + 500 Min.. and +$10-15 for data)?
Or should I just wait until Nov 14th to buy the MyTouch 4G?
One last thing: Are there any 3rd party retailers that will sell the phone off contract? Seems like most places I checked (wirefly, costco, Target, etc) all require a 2yr contract.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
Costco will more than likely do an Even More Plus plan in which you buy the phone outright and open up a new account. You get more minutes and/or a cheaper plan in return. You usually save around $20/mo. The EM+ plans are contract-free. Costco still requires that you open up a new account with new phone number, which you can always terminate anytime. I did that with my Vibrant.
Well since the Even More Plus plan is no contract, you can get the unlimited data plan now and switch to the cheaper data plan later. Also your numbers might be wrong since both add up to $60 a month, and it wouldn't make sense to get unlimited and tiered data plans for the same price...
@floepie: I actually stopped by Costco today. Was told they will only sell on contract. I've purchased phones from Costco before. If I was going the 2yr contract route I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again.
@ArcticWolf91: Yeah the ability to switch is what I wasn't sure about since I've never been with TMo and am new to these no-contract plans. But most likely that's what I'll do. And yeah I had the pricing wrong..and looking at it now I think it'll only save about $5/month between the tiered and unlimited so not really worth it.
Thanks for the help guys!
You won't be able to use a full android phone with the lessed data plan.
They have two classifications -
"Media oriented" android phones aka mytouch 4g - $30
Basic android phones LG Optimus/Huwai - $10
According to TmoNews, the data plan restrictions might change on Nov 14th:
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/11/t-mob...w-data-lineup/
So you're saying even the T-Mo stores refuse to sell to you at full price? That's not cool. I would say go to BestBuy, but they usually inflate their off-contract price vs carrier MSRP so as to weed out non-contract sign-ups.
**EDIT**
Dude, i just went to Tmobile.com and you can buy it off contract for $449.99, plus sign up for the EM+ plan.
Why not do that?
Nov 14th 200mb data is 10, ultd is 30 for ANY phone... you CAN Chang to it whenever... its a promo so requires contract extension, but doesn't mess with equipment upg eligibility date... also tethering drops on the 14th for 14. 99

It's $20 per month cheaper IF you get your plan switched to the Even More Plus contract-free plan.
It's not cheaper automatically, as far as I know, if you're on a current contract rate and don't ask for the change...

No, it would be cheaper.
If you're not currently a T-Mobile customer, and you buy the phone contract free and at an unsubsidized price, you can ask for the Even More Plus plan, and you will get a rate that is $20 per month cheaper than people who buy the phone for $199 with a two year contract pay per month.
The Even More Plus plan is not available online any more, you have to go into a T-Mo store and ask for it specifically... I'm not sure Best Buy can/will offer it to you.
What I did with my Nexus One was go into a T-Mo store and buy the sim card before my phone even came in, then just plugged the sim into the phone when it was delivered.
I pay $59.99/mo for 500 talk minutes, unlimited text and unlimited web AND I'm not tied to any contract (well other than the monthly contract). You still get free nights and weekends and all that good stuff.
No reason to not buy the phone at full price and unsubsidized, unless you don't want to fork over $580 all at once. In the long run it's a better deal.

distortedloop is correct; T-Mobile's pricing is such that plans are marginally less expensive if you are not on contract.

Just so you know, ALL Nexus S's are sold unlocked. The word you're looking for is "unsubsidized", or full price.
People have been saying that Even More Plus (no contract) plans are $20/month cheaper than Even More (contract) plans. This is only partially true. The Phone+Text+Data plans are $20/month cheaper. Phone+Text (no data) plans, and data only plans, are $10/month cheaper.
The general Even More Plus plans are not available online (with the exception of the data only plan which I linked above). You'd need to go to a T-Mobile store (or call customer service) to get the general EM+ plan.

+1, yes you will save in the long run
I was in a loyalty unlimited plan ($84.99) for 2 years with my G1. Wanted to save more in the long run so I opted for the "non-contract" Even More Plus Plan ($59.99). I had to call Customer Care to be able to change my loyalty unlimited plan. So in 2 years similar to signing a 2 year cotnract, I save $250.
Like others suggested, buy the sim card for the Even More "Plus" plan for $59.99
and just buy the phone outright.
Even More Plus is really only beneficial for single lines. If you have more than one, it's not worth it.

Why's that? The cheapest Talk+Text+UnlWeb family plan is $30/month cheaper on EM+ than on EM. And the savings increast with the higher-minute plans.
where are you guys seeing EMP plans? i thought t-mobile got rid of them, i certainly can't find it on their site.
I'm still in contract with my G1 plan. $79.99 with unlimited talk/text/data.

Current Plan:
Even More 1500: $79.99
Data Plan (2): $40
Unlimited Family Messaging: $20
Two phones: Free til 2012
Total: $140
Even More Plus 1500: $119.99
Data Plan (2): Included
Unlimited Family Messaging: Included
Two phones: $10
Total: $130.00
That's only $10 a month cheaper for EMP. When I have to start paying the other two lines, it'll be $20 a month cheaper...which is the general consensus that EMP saves ($20/month).
$20 a month for 22 months = $440.
Now go to upgrade your phones. I need two smart phones and two regular phones.
Even more: Free (2 Vibrants, 2 Gravity T)
Even more plus: 2 Vibrants at retail ($400? each) and 2 Gravity T at retail ($175? each) = $1150 (this may be a high estimate) - $440 (savings) = $710
The difference I save each month on EMP does not offset the price I have to pay to buy phones outright.

I must be missing something. On T-Mobile's website, the EM1500 plan with unlimited txt + data is $160/month. Is your plan maybe part of some special? Or do you have 4 of the $10/month (200MB cap) data plans?
From your description, it's tough to tell whether you have 4 lines or 2 (since you say "once I have to start paying for 2 lines").
I realize we're kinda sidetracking the main thread here ... I'm just curious about your plan for some reason.

Keeping unlimited data plan

Anyone else buy the phone that already has unlimited data? I can't get the $199 price. It tells me it's $299 if I dont change to a limited data plan.
This just seems terrible. I have an upgrade but not full if I won't change my plan.

Where did you try to buy it? If it was online, I suggest trying to go in store. If that doesn't work, give AT&T a call and complain. Tell them that you're a long time customer (I'm assuming since you still have the unlimited data plan), and you insist on being grandfathered in. I upgraded to the Atrix via a phone order and kept my unlimited plan, the only downside is having to wait for it to ship.
yeah do it in store they'll grandfather your unlimited data
I'll have to try a different store on Tues. The folks i asked today said only $199 If I go to the datapro plan. Well I'll try again elsewhere.

yes. i had web2go on Nexus. bought MyTouch 4G (used) and could not connect to internet, called tmobile and they switched me to 5GB data plan for the same price, at least thats what rep said.....and i asked him twice to make sure there are no additional costs. my plan at tmobile.com is 500 min + 5GB 4G data for $39 bucks. I have something similar. My sensation (international version) didn't work, so I was going to get the Android Preferred but I didn't want to extend my plan 2 years because of AT&T. They gave me $10/month off for taking the Android Preferred with 2 years extension... - okay, I checked and this shows up as credit adjustment under the main family account

I asked too and after consulting a manager the rep offered 5GB for $25 a month. (Its usually more). I just took the 200MB plan. ($10)
You're lucky
Well not that lucky. Turned out that rep LIED to me. (I asked him many times if I will still be paying $10 for my 5gb data and he said yes) 1st month I did end up paying $10 bucks, but 2nd month they charged me $25. I called them up and they refunded me $15 bucks and I also had to switch to Valve plan with 2-year contract. Now I get 2GB data for $10 bucks. My bill used to be $40 with 5GB and now its $45 with 2GB. (i only use 1.5-2.0GB max though)
I was pretty pissed....not really because I had to switch, but because of that STUPID rep.
never agree to the solutions they offer. Always ask them to fix the problem and remove whatever they added to your account.
then go to the store and start over. the "fixing" is always good on their end. it's on the books. you just agreed to a 2yr contrat w/out even a free phone

Correction, the T-mobile rep LIED to me too. Even after I repeatedly verified. There are overage charges on the $10 data plan. (They removed it for me after I called, but only once)
There are no overages only if you are on the "Value" or "Classic" plans. I am on the old even-more-plus no-contract plan.
Note: Only the classic plan lets you get a subsidised phone. And switching to "value" or "classic" both require a 2 year contract.
Sad t-mobile, sad.
I dont know where people get that Tmobile is #1 in customer service.....every single time I call its a lie after lie......followed by another lie
They are usually nice on the phone...compared to att. No other carrier can match their rates either.
(5 lines, 1000 min , 3 lines with 2GB high speed data then unlimited 2G for $95/month)
