Are you buying a Venue Pro? - Venue Pro General

I'm pretty excited about this phone and after scouring the internet tonight, I can't find **** on new information. It looks like it was showed at the WP7 launch and that's it.
Dell's being very hush hush and that's just making me more and more impatient!
Anyway, are you buying a Venue Pro?

Yes! I have pre-ordered it on Clove. Been looking for a Micro SD card to go with the phone. I am hoping that it can take a class 4 Micro SD as I have my eye on a 32gb SD card to complement the phone.
Roll on 8th November. Hoping that it does not get pushed back but with all of these infromation leaks from Clove it is look more like a reality.

Will want to try the keyboard first. The screen is probably near perfect.
The Dell Venue Pro would have been perfect (for me) if it had:
1) HTC Locations (/ maps)
2) HTCSense.com functionality
3) Flash (as per the HTC Desire HD)

Yeah, I'm also digging the HTC Hub stuff. I bet some XDA devs will be able to port it.
Flash is on the way in Jan 2011, last I heard.

I was planning to get the Dell Nov 8. However I read it won't be available stateside on Nov 8. So I'm looking into a plan B.
Plan C might be a Desire HD. I hope it doesn't co e to that.

I switch to tmobile for it. Pre ordered from Clove but now it seems there version won't support tmobile 3G so emailed to cancel guess I will have to wait. Had picked up a g2 for now but took it back and got the Vibrant. Great phone so I am content for a moment. I like the Vibrant even more than my Captivate I had. Thought they were the same but the tmobile tweaks are great

My guess is that there's just a single model coming out, and it's intended for TMOUS.
HOWEVER, in addition to their own oddball 3G frequencies, TMOUS smartphones generally support world standard (European/Asian) ones also. This enables TMOUS customers to use the phone overseas. Recent example: TMOUS HD2.
So, except for any SIM lock issues, the TMOUS Dell Venue is probably good to go on European networks, and that a "European" Venue Pro is probably a TMOUS one in disguise.
Again, all just a guess.

yes yes and yes
im getting it if it ever gets over seas to Sweden its the perfect phone for me! though it could have been slimmer XD

I plan on getting this if I'm not totally blown away with Gingerbread and/or the new myTouch HD, whichever comes first. This looks like a joy to use. The large 4.1" AMOLED and the portrait qwerty. Looks like they read my mind. Also it WILL have expandable memory, it's similar to the Samsung where you'd hard reset it and it'll recognize the sd card. The caveat is you'll lose all your data every time you change sd cards.
Only wish it supported HSPA+ and had the newer procs. But since I'm connected via wifi more often than not, it doesn't matter much to me, tho it would be nice. As far as the older chips, it could be powered by a hamster and wheel as long as it doesn't hiccup once, I'll be more than happy.

I think it's being released late Nov. as opposed to Nov 8th.
EDIT: Anyone have past experience with Dell phones? How was the build quality / support? I've never owned anything other than HTC smart phones.

This is the first dell phone . They've had handheld devices before (pocket PC's) but the build quality and overall product was terrible (they didn't put much effort into them). This phone is a completely different direction for Dell. Build quality is superb, it's worth every penny.
And unlocked versions are expected to be available in the UK as of November 8.

Battery Life
I am really thinking bout getting this over the HD7, but some reviews were saying that it may have 3 hours of talk time?!!!! If this is at all true with an AMOLED screen, then wow. I know Dell computer batteries suck, hope they used another company for their batteries. I know it isn't out yet, but what are your guys thoughts?

As far as build quality goes, if it feels great at the sotre, then I'll def buy it. I'm mostly looking forward to the stereo speakers and 4.1 inch screen. I've always felt that 4.3 inches might be a little too big for me.

No one has had the Venue Pro in their hands since the WP7 launch day. If you check YouTube, all you'll find are videos of that Dell lady demoing the phone for everyone.
Wherever you heard this 3 hour rumor, I call bullsh**.

Dell computer batteries suck? Wtf have you been buying. My 3 year old Dell Latitude D630 still gets a good 6-7 hours of battery life.
No one has even received a review unit of the DVP yet, so it would be impossible for anyone to conclude that battery life is only 3 hours.
The microsoft site states that the battery life is 7 hours with 14 hours of standby time (if I am reading it correctly).

Alright, thanks. Yea, the site I usually go on just changed their info to 7 hours too. Thats really the only worry I had about the phone.

I'd disagree. I had an Axim X5 and an X50v, and I found the build quality to be fantastic. They were solidly built, hard wearing and all round well designed. Pretty much everything about them gave the impression of solidity. I still have the X50v and the only signs of it being 6 years old is a small amount of the chrome paint has come off the centre button and the battery is knackered (this would happen to any 6-year-old Li-ion battery). When I sold the X5 it had no signs of wear at all. I'm fully expecting the Venue Pro to be the same.

I really love the form factor of this phone. Having a full screen with a slideout keyboard that doesn't go to landscape mode would be perfect! Two issues:
1) The TMo data network in my area, while 3G, is pretty poor
2) Same ol' 1GHz snapdragon processor
So switch to CDMA and toss in one of those fancy dual core Snapdragons and I'll be in line on launch day

Yeah, I am liking the idea of possibly being able to QUICKLY type out a text message with just one hand. If it had a landscape keyboard, it wouldn't be easy to do that.

I have a Dell Streak - and the build quality is brilliant. Its really very very good. If the Venue Pro is anything like that then it will be excellent Im sure.
Battery life on the Streak isnt anything to shout about but its a 5" screen and I had it running some live wallpapers.
I had a play with a HD7 in my local O2 shop and now Im torn! Windows Phone 7 is slick as a bag of oiled up ferrets!

Choices, choices

Hi guys. First off; I'm getting a new phone next month and I'm looking to get a wp7 device, but which one?
I've narrowed down two options:
- Htc hd7, £30 p/m 500mb data, unlimited sms and 300mins (Orange network)
- Samsung omnia 7, £30 p/m 1gb data, 5000 sms, 500mins, free Skype calls (Three network)
I know it may seem the omnia is a much better deal, but the screen size and HTC hub are very attractive. So, could owners of both give me some ideas as to which I should take the plunge for?
Thanks in advance.

I was using HTC hero with Orange but the reception for me is really bad (east London).....i can never talk more than 1 minute in my own home.
I recently bought the omnia 7 with T-mobile £35 per month 900 Min and 500 txt including
a flexible booster....i can now talk with ease in my own home.
The Omnia 7 is just beautiful compared to the HTC HD7 beacuse of the SUPER AMOLED screen.....but unfortunately Omnia 7 is only 8 gb but HTC HD7 is 16 gig
I'd go for quality....
I recently got the Onmia 7... very very very nice handset, its very quick it looks stunning and thank god isnt made by HTC.
The memory on the omnia is built into the phone with chips and not Micro SD, this has its pros and cons.
The pros are its very fast, games loader quicker..there are vids on youtube to show this.
The cons - cant upgrade size
The screen is really something to see, its Beautiful
HTC seem to be putting more effort into their android phones than the WP7, which is fair enough its a new product and possibly they dont believe it will sell much, android on the other is has a waiting list on the Desire of 6000 on Orange Uk network, so thats defo a seller they will back.
Ive had a few HTC devices over the last few years and they always seem to come short of being what you want (my personal opinon).
Also the camera on the Onmia is a 5MP and isnt the best but is ok as a happy snapper.. good when you need a quick pic. That being said I think the only handset that has a better one is the HTC Mozart with 8MP.. but if you want something that takes Professional Pics go buy a proper camera from Nikon or Olympus.
Hope this helps
I've had a play with the Omnia 7, and it's a good phone no doubt - the screen really pops, but I actually prefer the LCD on the HD7 for day to day - the Omnia is not realistic and too saturated.
The HD7 has a bigger screen, which if you use it for browsing etc is a big advantage. I found myself reconfiguring my router the other night using the wife's HD7 because she was using the laptop, and it was bloody brilliant I have to say - so easy to do, and definitely feel the extra screen size plays a big part here.
The HD7 is very well made - I've seen some reports to the contrary on here, but I can only imagine people have had bad luck because I can't fault the quality on the HD7.
There are early glitches with it - there always well be, but I'm sure there are with the Sammy as well. The manufacturers will release firmware updates to resolve this.
I would say what do you want the phone for - is storage space important, is size important (either big or small)? Make your decision on that basis as ultimately they are both pretty much the same hardware, and both are the same OS!
Oh, and HTC hub is more of a gimmick really, can't see the point in it overall since you now have the Metro UI instead. It looks nice, but can't see that you'd use it often as it's not the home screen.

Agreed.. new OS's always have bugs.. the Samsung has them too, hope to be sorted soon by Microsoft.
Thanks for all of your responses, I think I'm going to go with the Samsung, I had a look at both devices in store today and the omnia 7 feels far better made and the games loaded much quicker; added to the beautiful screen is a winning combination. Thanks again for your responses I can't wait for my new phone!

I've had both HD7 and Omnia 7 and the Omnia has much better build quality.
Oh and I would recommend going with a different network to 3, I signed up with them as they were the only shop to have a Omnia 7 in, I am not impressed with them at all.

Thanks for the info, I'm not sure I've never been with three and the only other deal that comes close is with orange who I'm currently on and have shocking coverage in my area. My mate who lives down the road has an omnia 7 with three and the signal is great where mine is awful :S

I think it just depends more on where you live. I've been with 3 for the past 12 months and have found the network to be great.
Samsung Omnia 7
Somehow got the £35 month deal 900 min, 500 texts, unlimited landline calls, for £30 a month with t-mobile on a renewal i kept waiting for 3 months for Winmo7 deals. Wanted the HTC Pro 7 when it came out, But couldn't wait any longer
Along with comeradealexi everytime i look at the screen it's amazing. Glad i took it over the HTC. Bright, Crisp, Colour looks great.
I see jip about features such as settings that drain the bat are automaticly disabled like the camera features but i've come to think they work. the bat isn't the GREATEST i've noticed, so anything to keep it alive and kicking longer is A+ in my books.
The audio on the Samsung is amazing, and better than most bluray decoders i'm seeing because of the requirments of this thing.
And i'm glad they went NAND style storage *thumbs up Samsung*, Quicker, Snappy than SD and what you would expect as xbox's use the same style Nand storage but they only use 4gb in the new models, anyone who wants more GBs is just being silly, I'f you get a £500+ smartphone and can't afford Zune Pass while you have the phone then your should get another phone for music or your gonna moan. Simple as that.
Whatever you do, stay away from three. I think you can get an omnia 7 from t-mobile/orange instead.
t-mobile man, they always been good to me, plus we can use oranges signal now whatever that means to more coverage in 2G at least.
Right, found another deal which I'm defo going to go for.
-Free omnia 7
-T-mobile 24month
-600 mins
-500 sms
-Unlimited Data allowance
-Best of all £25 per month!
Thanks again for your responses.

It's not so much the coverage, it's...well, a story:
When I went to O2 to get a HD7 the guy came over right away and we went through the form filling out and he explained everything and it all went smoothly. My number was ported within a few hours and all was good. When I took the phone back they didn't even ask why I wanted to return it they just put it through the till and refunded me all the money. They were great.
Then I went to the 3 store next door, the guy came over soon enough and said he had 1 Omnia 7 left. When I said I would take it we went over to the computers and while we were entering the details in he kept trying to sell me various things, first a router, then 3 home broadband. That was the first thing to annoy me, O2 did not try to sell me anything extra, not even a case.
After all the forms were done I gave him the PAC code and he said my number would be ported within 24 hours, it took 3 days. And even after 3 days it still had call forwarding on for some reason, so I rang the support line and of course the call centres are in India. The support guy couldn't help at all he said just wait longer basically. In the end I had to do the special code thing to get rid of it.

Still worth buying?

With Gingerbread and the new dual core CPUs on the horizon is it worth it at this point in time to invest $600 to buy a Streak? I really love the idea of the large screen, but there are even rumors of dell's successor to the Streak (Opus One) with a dual core snapdragon and higher res screen on the way. I'm looking for peoples opinion, should I wait or go for the current Streak?

I'm in the same boat and have the same question. I'll probably be using a more camera orientated phone but will probably wifi tether so I'm looking for a tablet to carry around. Galaxy tab and what nots seem nice but I like how the streak is a smaller size and easier to carry around. So is it worth it? Or is there something better for the price?
There is always something better coming on the horizon and like anything in tech, it is old news once you have bought it.
What you have to ask yourself is will the tech that is around now suit your needs and if so, buy it now. By the time those specs arrive in the shops, something better will be on the cards.
Did the 2.2 update bump the WiFi from G to N? (Otherwise, no, it's not, IMHO.)
Agreed 100% Once I started using this thing, my X10 looked like a mini. Even with the 4" screen.

It's not worth buying a new one as it's 5 months old (if that makes any sense).
Why don't you buy a used one at $430, then it's worth it.
Can you stand to wait longer? I would wait it out, depending on your situation.
The Streak has been out around 5 months, and 5 months is a LONG time in tech and CES is right around the corner.

Sure. If you don't mind waiting a ~year for the device, you can wait.
(It's been over 10 months from the initial Dell Mini5 rumors to the actual device available on the market.)
Best buy in U.S has it for $100 this week. You could always try it for up to 30 days, then return it after you find out whats in store for CES.

5 months and still Dell has not been able to release 2.2.. Does not say a lot about Dell's software abilities. Seems like the Streak is just a hobby to Dell
With dual core, what is the battery life going to be like? Seems like the current devices have plenty of power, but the battery life sucks big time.

This is not true.
Dell completed their 2.2 on August 30, 2010.
I purchased my Streak on October 1st (This was the first day it came out here in Australia) and the first thing i did was update to official 2.2 in the car on the way home.
The update is completely OTA and painless.
If you haven't got the update it is probably because you bought your streak carrier locked on a contract, therefore the bottleneck for receiving updates is the carrier not Dell.

Very true. I got mine, as well, and the update was available right off the bat. It was turn it on and "update available!" lol. I love the streak. It's very usable still. Battery life is way better than my iphone 4, and the screen is awesome (I just need apps to be able to make text larger! Because as is it's very tiny!) I think the Dell Streak is great ^^ Camera sucks tho. It's got HORRIBLE shutter speeds.
Yup, Jump on ebay and get yourself one cheaper then $500. I got mine used for $450 and the guy sent me Dells invoice and I have the warrenty information and all. So be cautious as to who you by from.

[Q] - Tempted to purchase - UK

Hi Guys,
I'm at the end of my contract this month, so tempted to get ahold of the Venue Pro. I've seen there are some Firmware issues, so basically I have 2 questions.
1,
Does anyone know where I can get it on a contract in the UK, havent found one yet - or where I can purchase it sim free - preferably contract
2,
How much of a deal breaker is the firmware issue? And how much does it impact the phone
Basically the phone would be perfect - portrait slider is what I need, and WP7 is the dogs.
Cheers Guys
Chris
I love mine. Like you i mainly wanted it for the portrait slider, however i only use it on long emails as the on-screen keyboard is amazing.
I was lucky i guess on issues. I cheaped out and ordered the 8gb with intentions to swap it to 32gb as soon as it arrived, which i did for not only more space but to get around the lockups.
If i had to do it all over again, I "might" have gone with the samsung focus for the better camera since I'm not using the hardware keyboard as much as i thought i would on the DVP. But all in all, i love the look of the phone and it stands out. And it does everything i need it to do.
I might not have much of a voice, but I love my DVP.
I did not experience issues that are expressed on this forum as much. I have not tampered with the registry (well you really cant...) and the only thing i did to modify it was sideload apps using my MS developer license.
Maybe it is because I apparently have the updated firmware?
The people you will find on this forum who stuck around are probably the ones to talk to. I hear domineus has had his since the beginning.

Echo Venelar's statements. I love my Dell. Its really a choice you have to make. You've read the threads. There are people that have received a Dell that just are NOT right...period...there are other people, like myself, who have had little to no problems. Whether one side or the other is in the majority, we'll never know. So, until the fixes are in place and in production, you take that risk...good one...bad one.
Again, like Venelar said, I find myself almost never using the keyboard...almost as in once or twice in 7 months....But, I could not bring myself to get the Focus. Not a Samsung fan for design...and it appeared they had hardware issues that impacted the update ability.
One of the more attractive phones in Europe was said to be the Omnia 7. Don't know if thats available in the UK, but you may want to look it up. Also, the Trophy started out slow with staining on the display, but is turning out to be quite popular. It has a good size and feel to it, though lacks the brilliant display of the focus and VP.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I currently have a HD7 - which I love to bits, but I do spend alot of time emailing / texting ,and I think with the upcoming addition of facebook chat / windows live and facebook messages that I'm going to use the phone alot more for chatting.
I guess I can see what you mean - the WP7 keyboard is really good - far better than my wm6.5 or android keyboards I've had, but as I trained as a touch typist for a previous job 5 years back, I end up typing really fast and I make far too many mistakes on the touch screen.
I've seen the Omnia 7 - that looks good. But, I'd probably prefer to keep my HD7 over it. But the Dell seems to be a better build quality than the HTC devices - from what I can gather.
Another frustration is that it doesnt appear to be in any of the UK stores - so I just cant get to try it out. I was hoping it would be on a network here, hidden away - I wonder if anyone has found anything out about it?
Thanks again for your input guys - I'll be researching heavily over the next couple of weeks the best way to acquire one of these I think
Hi
I'm based in the UK and have been using my DVP for over 2 months.
1) Haven't seen the phone available directly from carriers yet. I bought mine sim-free from Dell - there are also third parties (e.g. ebuyer.com) selling it significantly cheaper. One thing to be aware of is that many third parties appear to sell the 8GB version whereas Dell sells the 16GB version. You can add a higher-capacity SD card - however, as mentioned above it voids your warranty.
There also seem to be a few websites selling the DVP with a contract, presumably a deal they have put together themselves. If you google 'dell venue pro contract uk', you'll find several. I don't have experience of these sites personally.
2) For my device, the firmware issue basically means that I keep wifi switched off, except for short bursts. With wifi on, the phone becomes unstable. However, with wifi off, I have been using the phone for a couple of months without any crashes or reboots - it has been very stable. Generally, the only time I switch on wifi is to get marketplace updates. Obviously, your mileage may vary.
Personally, I use the hardware keyboard extensively, which was one of my main reasons for choosing the DVP. I find it very comfortable. It doesn't have any cursor keys but that's probably not possible in a portrait keyboard.
Overall, I am happy with my choice of the DVP - it's a very nice device. I wanted a phone with a hardware keyboard, good screen, decent storage capacity and WP7 - the DVP is a perfect fit.
From my perspective, the most positive sign recently is that Dell have finally started communicating re: DVP issues. Much more optimistic now that they are serious about resolving the issues.

Sadly you can only get it from dell. I waited a good bit before ordering my nexus one because of the same thing. I had never purchased a phone without the chance to hold it. I bit the bullet and ordered the nexus one when they announced stock was getting low and it worked out. I couldn't have been happier with that phone. I guess having that experience go well didn't hold me back from getting the online-only DVP.
And yes, the build quality is amazing. Yeah the phone is heavy, but if you've always used phones with hardware keyboards then it's something that you are used to dealing with. The phone is stout, I love it.

Ex Dell Streak er

I'm surprise no one started a thread just yet on this so let me be the first. I'm a former Dells streak user and one of those who can't rid myself of the 5 inch display, use it up to the latest rom by Djsteve on streakdroid 2.4. got myself a Gnote for couple of weeks now and is currently on Cassie's literom KL3.
here is my like and dislike with Galaxy note as compare to Streak:
Like:
Super Amoled HD makes streak pixel looks so rough in comparison
For factor, lighter and easier to hold even though screen is 0.2 inch bigger than streak.
GPS lock is blazing fast
Superb Battery life -consider this if you need more juice-http://www.obostore.com/5000mah-extended-battery-for-samsung-galaxy-note-p-3925-c-198.html
Picture and movie quality!
Dislike:
ROM for Note at infancy stage, can't even get launcher to work flawlessly
Can't run many games due to compatibility(screen not maximize or apps cant run)
Physical button location. Streak button is all at the right place for one hand thumb usage and correctly position when use horizontally. (streaker who had migrate will know what i mean)
this is what i can think of and this is not a review, i know its not fair to compare both hardware as both are from a different time and in gadget time, one year means 1 decade in human time
Ex streaker, please share your thoughts.
Streakers, post question if you have any.
I am an ex Streaker who was "forced" to go to a Samsung Infuse when my precious Streak's screen cracked... I have been drooling over the Note for months - only thing holding me back is fear of being shut off by AT&T (I am on an "unlimited" smartphone plan and I do not want to lose that). Great thread - I am curious what the ex streakers think of the Note!
Just waiting for the white Note to be released in the UK then I'll add to this thread ... Hurry up Samsung !!

Streak
Im an ex streak owner forced to the Note after suprise suprise, breaking the lcd on the streak.
Comparison wise, the streak was good, but im sorry to say the streak is an amateurs toy compared to the note, th Gnote is a real beast humming along, the streak could never compare, as for roms, people can talk Dj Steve all day long, there isnt a single rom on that forum that actually worked as it should have, especially streakdroid.
Whats all this talk of people being cut off their data plans for having a streak, Im on an unlimited data plan in the uk with 3 and no ones ever said anything to me about my data usage, ive heard this a few times on this forum now, is this only an AT&T issue or something??
This device is basically eveything everyone who had the 5" had hoped the opus one would be. Rooting and roming seems to be easier than on the streak too somehow. I only lament it not having nfc or lte or hsdpa2 or 4g connectivity as was stated months back. There will probably be an updated version somewhere along the road too. Rumors already fart in the general direction of 6" too. Which, btw, is basically the maximum i am willing to carry, as long as the bezel ain't too big anyway. The pentile matrix samoled display is a bit of a cheat because it only uses 8 instead of 12 subpixels too. BUT the display is both capacitive AND induktive and the s-pen is basically a wacom stylus pen.

Also an ex Streak user here. I loved the streak at first, but after a few months I got really fed up with its temperamental nature. It was very slow at times and became just a hindrance. I couldn't wait to get rid of it and upgraded to a galaxy s2 as soon as I could. Then a few months after that I saw that the Note had been announced and began drooling over that. Had a few problems with pink spots on S2 camera so I used that as an excuse to complain to Orange UK, got out of the contract early, started a new one and got the Galaxy Note free.
Its just such a different experience to using the Streak. Much faster (although I do think some of the 3rd party launchers were smoother on the streak), much better screen, nicer to hold, s pen is fantastic, and as some others have said...the s2 now feels like a little toy.

Graemeg, don't worry that wont happen on UK networks. Its only US networks that do that for some reason.....it seems absolutely crazy that in this day and age, and in such supposedly free country that that should be allowed to happen.. .what the hell is this world coming to. Come on all you AT &T users, get together and do something about it.

It looks like AT&T had the wrong IMEIs in its database, and it was incorrectly identifying the Note as a tablet. Apparently it's been fixed.

what is the deal on LTE for AT&T? Should I wait for the AT&T LTE version - or just go ahead and buy the UK version from Amazon?
I'm an ex-Streaker and have had my Note for about 2 days now (Euro/UK version) I love it. I was about to get a Galaxy Nexus but went into VZW on launch day, held up my Streak to it, and realized I can't go back to a smaller screen (4.65" in ICS is about 4.4" or so due to soft buttons).
I am a former Dell Streak owner / early adopter.
I chase new technology and when I heard of the Note I became consumed with interest.
My Streak was great. I used it a lot. Thankfully, I was able to sell it.
But... the Note is SO MUCH further beyond the Streak. The screen. The feel in hand. The speed. The camera. The OS. Leaps and bounds ahead of the Streak and it's not even close.
But... if I had a small complaint; the Note's side buttons are easy to hit in the gripping process. Sometimes the easy press is good. Sometimes not. But I'm learning to avoid them.
I used to own a streak, and now own a note. This phone really is what the streak should have been. All the djsteve roms couldn't make the streak a frustrationless phone, the note is without modding it.
Everybody thinking about jumping ship, do it!
AT&T
Sorry for all you guys having those issues, thats just awful the way this company has behaved.
Im on the 3 network in the uk, and i know 3 and vodafone allow complete tethering over here, so there never seems to be an issue over it, although 3 are the only network that give TRUE unlimited data to their subscribers.
I do not have home broadband, i do not see the need, my friends are on 21mbps Broadband and even at good times only achieve DL rates of 5mbps, i tether my NOTE via usb tethering and achieve between 6-10mbps DL rates.
Some months ive downloaded about 10 to 20 gig, so, i see no need to ever invest in broadband that will never match what i have now.
I did read that the AT&T issue is now resolved, fingers crossed for you all, the note is probably in the category of a HYBRID as the streak very much was, but this does not give AT&T the right to spoil your enjoyment of the digital age, i hope you guys across the pond have no further issues, its a shambolic statement of corporate America based on greed, but then ive never heard anyone say anything good about them.
Dont get me wrong guys, i dont mean to DIS the streak, for what it was it was nifty, in its day, but it didnt help that the makers were DELL, and the amount of flaws in the item straight from the box in the uk were awful, my friend had 4 on the trot replaced, upon turning it on straight from the box, BOOTLOOPS, lmao, she soon ditched it and demanded a blackberry, i dunno which is worse LOL, then theres the terrible screen issue made of FEATHER glass, drop it from more that 3 inches from the ground and thats ya screen done for..........
What i did love, was how easy it was to customise, flash, reflash, revert to stock, flash, Wow, it really was childs play, this phone really was unbrickable, and i think that was its best feature, but still were very lucky, if Dell had never made and failed with the streak we may never have seen the GNote, SAMSUNG YOU ROCK......GOD BLESS AMERICA, AT&T you suuucccckkkk mannnnn.
I still have my Streak but I really enjoy and like my Note.
Mine should be here Dec 23
Ordered it from Amazon, should be here Friday.
I was also one of those that emailed at&t, and got the same "we screwed up" calls from them saying that it was a computer issue, so after seeing others get the same response, fingers crossed...I ordered it.
One way or another, it WILL work, or at&t will get another call back (lady gave me a number to call back if I had issues)...
Bought my Streak Oct 2010, rooted it to install 2.2 after waiting for at&t to do something, Dell to do something and just did it myself. After various tweaks...it's about as far as I can go. It's been a pretty good device, never really had any issues other than pretty much zero carrier interest or manufacturer interest...when Michael Dell pretty much said screw Android, that was it for me.

Do they have LTE in your area? If that is a benefit to you, then hold off and hope at&t actually gets it here in the 1st quarter of 2012. Me personally, H+ is about all we'll have for a while, I don't see the market I'm in getting LTE until 2014, if their slow rollout of H then H+ was any indication. Most of the time, other than checking a few emails, maybe a webpage or weather radar, I use wi-fi or hot spots, so the LTE version wasn't a consideration. Also, the branded at&t version won't have the home button, but the 4 capacitive buttons like the streak does, that is if you believe the leaks on the net, plus, I don't think at&t has a branded android device with a home button? or maybe it has something to do with some goofy patent that Apple has LOL.

I considered the same thing, and got my Note just 2 weeks ago. (I'm in Baltimore)
We do have LTE here(baltimore city), though not where I live(though since I have wifi at home, that point is mute)
I decided to jump on the unlocked deal since I'm out of contract already, and wanted to use a iPad SIM for data only use. I use google voice for text/talk.
It's almost for sure that when ATT gets the Note it will have the snapdragon processor and NOT for exynos. It will possibly loose the physical home button. It will have horrible battery life(or at least worse then H+ version), just as Verizon LTE phones do.
I'm not willing to give those things up for ATT/locked down phone. H+ is very satisfying when browsing and watching netflix. Besides downloading files, I don't see where I need that kind of speed on the go. In Baltimore I get 6-7 down and 1.5-2 up. Not to shabby when I am just loading a few megabytes at a time to check gizmodo or watch a flick.
"Me too" - or rather I will be once the Note arrives. I have had a Streak since Autumn 2010 and it's been "ok" and I love the screen size - being large and fat fingered myself
I finally ordered the Note after seeing the official confirmation of support for ICS earlier this week. I bought from Amazon Germany on Tuesday and it's already showing it's with my local Citylink ("****tylink") this morning. About £100 cheaper from Germany than Amazon in the UK - or at least Amazon UK fulfilled.
I am looking forward to my Note as my Xmas present even if I was expecting it next week.
It arrived after some issue (Xmas I guess) where it lived in their depot in MK for 36 hours. First impressions: The screen is stunning. Same WxH as the Streak but thinner - once it's in it's cheapo case, it's still thinner.
Merry Xmas all

Looking for T-Mobile WP7 phone - is this a good choice?

I know I posted a while ago if this was a good replacement for my G2 - but now I'm looking to supplement it.
This would be over the other two current options, the Lumia 710 and the Radar. I love physical keyboards, and I'm assuming the screen between the three is the best (and obviously biggest). Plus, I like the reaction when I ask T-Mobile employees about it and then show them pics of it - most of them aren't even aware it exists. Front facing camera on the Radar is nice, but not a dealbreaker. They're all available to me for around the same price brand-new/off-contract.
Anyway, my concern is that it being an older phone, I'm not sure how much longer it'll be supported, and if it'll be supported into Tango/Apollo (not saying either the 710 or Radar will, though); although according to a post in this article, if Dell reps are getting them to replace other phones and it's still getting updates, I'm hoping it'll get supported for a while:
http://www.wpcentral.com/dell-shocks-world-releases-8107-os-update-unlocked-venue-pro
I'm aware of the lack of Wifi hotspot and compass, but neither really matter to me. I need a WP7 phone period (for work), and it has to be on T-Mobile, so it's just between these three phones.
Raw spec wise, the VP is 1 generation older.
It's a 4.1 AMOLED (no super, no plus, which means it's pentile)
Biggest diff is obviously the screen, the V/VP's screen isnt amazing but it's by no means bad, it's easily much better then any plain lcd it's age (but it's a year old, dunno how it compares to more recent lcds like the other 2 you mention) After using a 4.1 and 5.0" phone, I'm pretty sure there's no way I'm gonna go back to anything under 4.0" It's simply too small unless you're basically using it as a featurephone.
No WP7 device is really old enough to be EOLed yet, but the VP is a launch device so it will be among the first to EOL (whenever that is?)
The tmo one is only 99 cents on contract (if you consider that cheap) you can easily get a brand new one off ebay for less then $200. (New, unopened, and recently manufactured)
Full price: eh it's a hard sell.
On contract/less then full price: It's worth the money if you want a HW keyboard.
It's basically breaks down to: do you want the keyboard and screen size.
Screen Size and Keyboard make it a no brainer to me. I wont even consider reupping my contract for a new windows phone unless the screen is 4.3in minimum though. The 1st gen processor doesn't really matter much as WinPhone is so smooth...Just my thoughts.
I have both the dell VP and the 710. I have also spent time with the radar. There is no easy way to recommend, seeing how this is a basic personal choice.
Of the 3, the dell is the nicest.
Of the 3, the 710 is the fastest.
Of the 3, the dell and the 710 do not have front facing cameras.
Of the 3, the dell is by far the oldest. There were serious questions regarding mango compatibility. I doubt, PERSONAL OPINION ONLY, the dell will see Apollo.
Do not mix Tango and Apollo. They are not on the same path. Tango is considered a mango derivative, not an upgrade, most likely associated with a hardware line.
As second Gen hardware starts arriving in the coming months, the dell will fall, behind speed wise at least. So if your phone usage includes a healthy dose of data usage, you should probably factor the lack of 4g and wifi n into your decision.
Hmm...definitely gives me a lot to think about...anybody know how battery life compares to the other two phones? The keyboard is basically the #1 reason why I'm considering the phone, but not if there's better options. I know WP7 is smooth in general - is there anywhere the better/newer processors of the Radar/710 come in? Data speeds are a valid point, but I don't think I'll be needing much more than it provides.
I really don't see why people are comparing 1st gen and 2nd gen. The only MAJOR difference I see is the processor, is 400mhz REALLY going to make that much difference? Not that I can think of.
Yea the camera sucks when not shooting in daylight but its a phone...And yea there's no front facing camera(a luxury not a requirement)either, in all the times of having a FF camera on my devices I only ever used it once on my Galaxy S in a Skype call.
The other advantages of this phone far outway its disadvantages.
Perfect physical keyboard
Big amoled screen
Nice quality speaker/mic due to slider mechanism
Premium look + feel
Gorilla Glass
Removable SD card, limitless expansion(if you dont care about your warrenty)
The compass not working isn't a major problem either, its just a luxury that COMPLIMENTS the gps, as long as I can use Bing/Google/Navigon maps I honestly couldn't care about the compass.
Let's not forget that software issues can be fixed, yea I know Dell haven't said much regarding the compass but that doesn't mean to say they won't fix it in the future.
I'd say go for it, until the generation gap is that big I don't think this being a 1st gen phone really makes all that much difference.

The Dell Service Manual and Windows Phone Device Manager both state that the phone has N capabilities...
Had mine since launch, and personally while I would like to upgrade to something like the Lumia 900 the Dell really is still a good, fast and stable WP7 phone with the advantage of a unique design and the excellent keyboard. If your work usage just entails emails, viewing docs and calls there really isnt any reason not to get it.
As for support, generic devices are getting the update to 8107 so at least for now its still supported. If you can get it cheap now, do it and enjoy and wait for the real upgraded hardware with Apollo.

It must be in error then, S1 snapdragons (such as the QSD8250 in the VP) do not support N, only B/G.

I agree with your statement.....but. It depends on how the OP acquiress the device. Get it used off Craigs list or ebay...sure....go for it...using appropriate caution. Buy it new and lock into a 2 yr contract, why? Why lock into a contract with an old phone. There is no difference in 400mhz is like saying all cars drive 60mph. Yes, thats true. Side by side there is a distinct difference in the speed of getting your data. If you choose to not see that, thats ok. sitting side by side with my Droid Bionic, there is NO comparison speed wise. The VP is a clear second choice. Even with the 710, speed wise, its a clear second place.
Now, the OP said data is not primary in their use of the phone. In that I agree that speed should not be a problem then. But I will fall back, once again, on old hardware, and a 2 yr contract. At the end of that contract, the Dell VP will be 3yr+ old hardware.
But.....the thing is pretty...the screed is very good...the keyboard is nice. Go for it if speed and age are ok with you. You wont be dissatisfied.

I've never got the wifi N to connect, ever. I played with all the frequencies, and bands, etc. Had a connection to the MS DEV team for WP, and they confirmed, to me, no n with the Dell...at least the original dell vp.

I agree the Dell is not a good choice to get on a contract now, I dont think the other 2 WP7 choices on Tmo are any better either. The Radar and 710 storage is pitiful and the screens are smaller, and in a few months there will be better devices with faster data and more storage, probably not with a hardware keyboard but with big enough screens to make it easier to adjust.
I dont think the age of the hardware is too relevant, the Radar and 710 are themselves old tech compared to the current range of android phones, even compared to the iphone. The Dell still works beautifully though, and is one reason I dont feel the itch to get something else. Tough choice, but all told I would still pick the Dell for non-contract use, and wait for something better if it is going to be put on a contract.

T=Mobile is notorious for low ended hardware, especially with Windows Devices. The Radar and Lumia follow that path. I am more familar with the Lumia. Though I am happy with the device in that its 4g and wireless N, The look and feel are not what I would decide to move to for a primary 2yr phone. I too am looking very closely at the Lumia 900.
I've always hoped that TMO would begin to offer a couple of mediium to higher ended phones in the Windows space. Even a Samsung would be a change. But continued reliance on HTC and low end hardware overall, just makes me doubt TMO's commitment to quality.
I say again, if you can get a DELL VP off contract, its well worth it. On contract though, its an old phone thats just getting older. Think about phone design, testing, etc. and how long that takes. Then remember the DELL was released in Dec 2010. That means the design and hardware pushes back to close to, if not into, 2009. Thats a long time for a phone, hardware design wise.
I can vouch that the V dates back to early 2010/late 2009 as prototype roms are known from back then.
The VP is essentially a V+keyboard, so hardware wise it's the basically the same. The V/VP are some of the last S1 devices released, with the VP being a WP7 launch device.
Looking around: are there really that few choices for WP7 device on TmoUSA? I bought my VP for unrelated reasons.
Looking on wikipedia, pretty much all S2 WP7 devices are for at&t for US markets, or pretty much all but tmo?
Depending on your work you might not even notice the difference from S1/S2, if it were me I'd (and under the rather large assumption all device drivers are of the same quality):
I'd pick the VP for the larger screen if you wanted 3g on tmoUSA.
The fact it's only 4.1 isnt saying much, but it means jack how fast your phone is if the screen's so small you can only look at 1/20th of a page/whatever at a time.
If it wasnt tmo, something like the lumia 900/titan 2/focus s are pretty good otherwise (ignoring price)
If you want a HW keyboard, the VP is the only(?) tmoUSA 3g supported device.
If you must have a keyboard, nothing compares to the DVP. I've owned both the HD7 and the DVP, and I prefer the HD7. You can find those pretty cheap on Craigslist or eBay, 4.3" screen, decent, not great but better than the DVP, camera, and it has full unlock and custom roms if you like to tinker.
The DVP is a much prettier piece of hardware. I'll give it that. The screen is great compared to the HD7.
I would wait just a little longer and see what TMO releases. I still have faith that a Nokia, 800/900 will be coming. A TMO HDx successor would be great if I had an ultimate request.

Now wouldn't that be grand!!! A nokia 800/900 on T-Mobile. I'm crossing everything for that. However...patience is required. I understand AT&T has a 45-90 day exclusive window on the 900. So the earliest we could possibly see it is June-ish. And, I believe the 800 has yet to be picked up in North America.
Which ever the next device, consider a higher end model. This should allow updates to Apollo possible. I have also heard through the birdies that the first Apollo internal testing builds are ready. So hopefully we should be hearing things about that shortly.

As nice as the 4.3" 900 sounds, I wouldn't second guess picking up the 800. They are both amazing looking phones. Why TMO picked the 710 over the 800? We may never know.

Possibly for the same reason why they dont have the galaxy nexus (tmo previously was the launch partner for every other nexus, and the g1), they're trying to shoot themselves in the foot?
The newest device they have seems to be the HTC amaze, which at first impression from the specs is just a rehash of the htc sensation, possibly a varient of the sensation XE? (which is only months old)
Has tmo had any flagship device since last year (as a major launch partner i mean, "oh we also carry" things dont really count)?
The closest flagship wp7 device they had was the HD7, which at&t turned around and got the HD7S?
The titan/II and lumia8/900's would count as flagship devices, and the titan's are At&t devices.
Basically, tmoUSA's been sitting on their butts for the past half year or so?
They're lacking flagship devices on both fronts basically?
Until someone releases flagship AWS devices, you're not gonna see anything above edge bringing over a device.
If you dont mind that you could simply pick any unlocked device available, like the lumia 800. Amazon is selling unlocked international 800's.

TMOUS had the Sensation which I would consider a flagship. I had one, and after rooting and s-off it was amazing. You're right about the Amaze being a rehash. Slightly better camera and faster data speed (at the sacrifice of battery) is the only difference.
I use to buy unlocked international devices before TMO had 3g. I can't go back to edge speeds though. I wouldn't complain if they had hspa aws bands. Doesn't even have to be hspa+...
I'm waiting for pentaband chips to become more common. Its not too far down the road (I hope).
It's getting off topic, but the galaxy nexus is itself pentaband.
Buy a GSM galaxy nexus, it supports 850/900/1700/1900/2100, pretty much only missing 800.
Really makes you wonder why tmo doesnt have it, it's literally just a stamp of approval if you look at the nexus S (pretty much unmodified, launched as the AWS varient)
You could argue that carriers such as at&t and tmo are blocking cross-supporting devices from launching, there's nothing stopping a manu from simply not specifically releasing it in the US.
I believe it's not the chips per-se that determine what bands they support, but what amps the manufacturer puts in them. HTC is notorous for cutting corners and putting in the absolute minimum needed for a varient.
Hopefully nokia or samsung will make a WP7 phone that's at least triband or higher, preferably quad/penta. Nokia's already got experience with pentaband devices, they were like the first, or close enough.
It really doesnt matter which os you like, only that there's plenty of people on the wrong side of the fence for 3g

I thought I read that all those bands were not available. They were all listed but not all selectable. I don't own the nexus, nor have I played with it. Just a side article I read somewhere. I could be mistaken, most likely am....
Thanks for all the info/help, guys - I went ahead and bought it for $230 plus $4 overnight shipping, hopefully should have it tomorrow to start playing with. I'll post my reactions (and any questions) soon after.
