Played with a Galaxy S. Smooth but why? - XPERIA X10 General

I played with a Samsung Galaxy S (Bell phone at a Canadian Best Buy) and I was amazed at how fluid all the menus were. Everything was so smooth. "Smooth" is the word I want to use because I'm not sure how else to explain it.
To use a video game analogy it looked like it was running at 60 fps vs 30 fps. So it wasn't faster...but smoother.
I'm trying to figure out why it's so much smoother than the X10.
Is it the screen? (Super AMOLED)
Is it the A8 processor?
Is it Android 2.1?
Any ideas?

Maybe a combination of the OS 2.1 and the GPU advantage over the X10. I personally think it is mainly the GPU performance over the X10.

Is the 2.1 and Samsung customization.

Is 'fluid' the word you're looking for?
Sent from my x10 using XDA and swype.

One of my mates has a galaxy s and another has a nexus one. I find both of these phones to be equally "fluid" and as the nexus one has very similar specifications to the x10 I am more inclined to say that it is all to do with the firmware.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

mainly it's because of 2.1 firmware!
I'm eager to see 2.1 or even 2.2 on X10.especially with SE customizations an UI.

untill you've owned one for a while.
every phone seems great the first time you use it. I used a desire running froyo the other day and found it to be crap. scrolling was jittery, browser was slow when loading flash sites, and the ui was not intuitive in the least.
I really wish the samsung/htc trolls would stop clogging up our x10 thread.
mods, please close this thread, it's pointless

Ya, I think fluid is the right term. It was really nice. Not sure about the phone styling (still prefer the x10) but the "fluidity" was great.

This is part of it. The X10 was awesome in the store. get home, add a lot of apps, music, widgets, contacts and it tends to slow/studder a bit. I'm not sure if other phones are like that too - but a bare phone in the store always seems to be fast/smooth.

you prob played with an extremely "clean" phone. I mean how many apps? how many contacts? did u happen to try the gps ?
any phone (even my htc s710) runs nice out of the box, but fill it with apps, contacts, background tasks, etc start running it will slow down.
as well, im sure the firmware will have something to do with the speed

Because that's EXACTLY the case.

i do not see the relevance?
since a Blu-Ray movie has 1080p res and 24 FPS.

I can tell you from experience that once you've loaded up a decent amount of things on the Captivate that it's not so fast. It plays games well still, but the system gets pretty laggy.

Hmm, well ive used a galaxy s too, i didnt notice a difference, but since the update to 026 my phone has been super smooth anyway. No lag or jitters at all...

Thoughts on 2.1

For those that remember, I dropped my streak cracking the screen. o2 gave me a new one - I shall be far more careful in the future.
Anyways I just upgraded to the 2.1, and prior to this (on 1.6) I liked the phone (but didn't love it as I did my HTC Desire and HD2).
However, with the new firmware, the phone is a million times better. The live wall paper looks amazing on the 5" screen, there is a really cool one with various music visualizations. What is even more impressive is the live wallpaper can be tilted up and down, its 3D!
The phone is a lot snappier and more responsive. There is definitely less lag when switching screens or opening programs.
The new dialer and gallery programs look a lot nicer. To be honest the dialer on 1.6 was really depressing.
BUT
The deal maker for me - The camera is infinitely better. There is no longer any shutter lag (which plagued the 1.6) and photos in dark conditions are better, and whilst the 720p video won't rival a sony handcam it is a massive improvement.
All in all very impressed. This should keep me going till the desire HD comes out!
a positive 2.1 review. im really hoping i will be able to get 2.1 on my US streak because i think thats what will make the phone for me.
what fps u gettin with 720p ... some ppl are sayin like 8fps ... ?
The camcorder captures above 8fps, but its certainly not 25/30fps. I would estimate 18fps.
Here is a video I took earlier.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPAoNRcaMPY&feature=channel
It's far better than 1.6 but the keyboard is REALLY horrible, very slow and no numpad and I make far more mistakes than the previous keyboard...
i thought it was supposed to be 24fps. which i think is rediculously slow but what do you expect, its a phone.

I've noticed with it that the fps jumps about a bit but cant really complain as this 2.1 build does feel like a beta so.
The final 2.1 may be 24fps who knows but it is an improvement whatever fps it is

you dont need to estimate.. you can get the info from inside the camera app.
i bet it will depend on room lighting. if you have 2.1, try in high light and low light. also try with lower video resolutions.

15fps on the cam apparently....damm
Well ever since i got my streak on release date i've loved it
Had been waiting on 2.1 as i knew this would make the phone even better and oh boy it's really amazing.
The live wallpapers, currently using beautiful widgets live wallpaper n it's a real eyecatcher for all my mates, so much so 2 mates r upgrading to it.
I've only got one problem in that i couldn't wait to get flash.... bbc iplayer full site on my streak...heaven... n here is the problem.. can i get flash 10.1 to download..nope.. really frustrating as it would be great.
if u like big phones then this is the phone for u, u'll not be dissapointed.
But if someone can help with the flash prob then pleeeeaassee let me know
Ev vern if you can download flash you won't get it to work as it designed to work on 2.2. Some one has tried this.
I am also looking forward to getting flash.....just wish dell would hurry up

HTC Incredible vs Samsung Vibrant: HTC Incredible is faster?

I have the Vibrant. My friend has the Incredible. I compared the two.
While on paper the Vibrant tops the Incredible in terms of hardware (aside from camera related areas), the Incredible seems to be a bit more snappy. Now I am not saying the Vibrant is "slow", but rather there is noticeable ~.5-1 sec delay when opening messaging, for example, where as the Incredible has none, at all. (I have applied Ryan's lagfix and hit 2.2k on Quadrant... wish Quadrant results would reflect actual performance.)
Seeing as how Vibrant has the better hardware, my guess is it must be Sense UI vs TouchWiz thing. I love TouchWiz (don't flame me) but if it is the one causing my otherwise great phone to slow down... I will nuke the thing.
What do you guys think?
I thought I saw that the incredible was starting to see froyo. Has he updated? That would make a huge difference. If you are seeing lash on the Samsung specific apps. I would say it is likely touchwiz vs. sense thing.

We need a later firmware revision. The one we have isn't very good. Later versions reduce or eliminate the type of lag you're talking about.
Besides that, I don't know what you're trying to prove here
My guess would be it's Touchwiz that causes this but there could also be other factors involved. I have a friend with an incredible and he replaced his messaging with handcent because the lag he was getting from opening the messaging app itself as well as the threads.

Have you applied the "fix" yet? I don't see any delays or lag when I open apps.
if you apply the "lag fix" i'm almost certain you won't be able to notice any slow downs in terms of opening applications.
from the limited knowledge I have of the whole "samsung vibrant lag" it's caused by the way the vibrant processes I/O read/write? it's very inefficient as compared to other phones. the fix is a work around and it literally makes it amazingly "snappy" and fast.
I'm choosing to hold off on the fix for now, people reporting issues and having to ODIN flash back to stock is turning me off.
*edit - totally missed the part that said you applied the lag fix. reading comprehension ftl

I have a friend with an incredible its a few months old but I found the opposite to be true. Using her phone made me appreciate the speed of the vibrant, I almost felt like I was back using a G1. my phone is about as stock as you can get aside from running launcher pro instead of the regular home app.
2.2 will only make this thing faster. I use touchwiz to show off my phone. It is a lil choppy but never slow. I think our only competitor when we get 2.2 will be the x but for some reason im not worried.

G2 a bit laggy?

i just got my tmobile g2 and after putting my email in and unlocking it for my att sim, i feel like is a little bit choppy. the scrolling in the web browser (i dint even install flash) and the responsiveness of the buttons, it doesn't feel as snappy as the the iphone 4. i remember when i was using the n1 with 2.2 a while back is a bit smoother. is it because i been using the iphone for too long? or is it because its preloaded with too much app? i don't think thats the case since the android rom it self is stock. will the smoothness of the ui improves when you put in a different rom when permit root is possible in the future?
one more thing, is it possible to add touch focus to the camera and video recording?
I don't know what you did but the G2 is incrediblly snappy for me. No lags at all. I'm even playing some heavy duty games, like Asphalt (racing game) and I do not notice any lags at all.
thats what i was expecting too, i dint do anything to my g2 is out of the back from the store
flash comes pre-installed.
Have you tried rebooting?
What are your linpack scores?
I too find G2 a bit choppy (after playing with my friend's iPhone4) but I think that's just the way Android is. It can do so much more but we have to sacrifice some smoothness in return. Seems to lag a bit more on home screens. Browser, maps, other apps are just fine.
Also, with Android 2.2, you have to use a phone for a while for it to achieve it's full potential. Something about JIT getting better over the time.
I had the same thing happen to me after i put my work email through microsoft exchange active sync. i ended up putting the check email frequency to never cause i always check it every morning and night to reply and that seemed to clear up that issue. it might be a bug with microsoft exchange active sync or the email app itself. hope that helps.
Honestly after the G1 I didn't believe android could run without lag, but my G2 never lags at all. Well maybe twice I've noticed a tiny second of lag coming back to the home screen but that's it. That being said, one of my friends got a g2 too and his is a little laggy here and there... gotta be particular apps/widgets causing issues in my opinion... with him in particular I think its the anyRSS widget, but I could be wrong of course. I love this phone

My g1 and my g2 BOTH lag blatantly when connected to cheap third party power cords fyi. They work fine on decent power cords, but glitch on the made-in-china, 3 chargers for 99 cents adapter cords.

The g2 certainly lags in the browser. On more complex webpages the scrolling is not very smooth at all. Load up a flash heavy site and its really bad. I find It really hard to control flash players and stuff. You have to zoom way in to get any buttons to register like on myspace music.
Set flash to "on demand."
Overall I have no lag. when i first got mine (oct 6) there was a delay when i tried to scroll the app drawer. The issues has a since disappear. This thing is snappy and blazing fast.
I think he might be referring to the "smoothness". Unfortunately all android phones have a tendency to stutter when scrolling.
There is no 2D graphics acceleration in the UI, as google did not want to have issues with the older 528mhz phones. Hopefully this will be resolved in 3.0.
The newer faster phones (Like the G2) can hide this with their raw CPU performance, but occasionally if its multitasking or doing something else it will stutter/lag. For now, Windows Phone 7, and iPhone's will always be "smoother". Until we get some decent UI acceleration .

do you have adobe flash 10.1 installed? Keep it on your phone internal memory not sdcard. If you are running stock browser or Xscope or skyfire (or even fennec) just clear the caches regularly. Otherwise there is no reason why the phone should be lagging. Also in settings, set flash player to "on demand" not "always"

I'm actually talking with flash off though and comparing the g2 side by side a captivate. So android's ui is not hardware accelerated but the galaxy s phones are able to totally mask that. Its not a big difference but a shame that the g2 processor doesn't keep up with the hummingbird. Now someone could explain to me that its because we are running 2.2 but I thought it was actually supposed to be faster than 2.1.
my phone is fast. there is a difference between lag and choppiness. lag is when there is a delay between when you tell the phone to do something and when it does it. choppiness is a lack of smoothness in scrolling. some apps are more choppy than than others. like the stock music app is way too choppy when scrolling lists. the browser is choppy. the contacts list is pretty smooth. but in terms of lag, I don't have any lag.

I think most of the Web browser choppiness is due to the fact your use At&t network for browsing on the G2 which will only get you slow speeds since it can't use At&t's 3G. This would be expected. Try wifi and see if you still have the choppiness. I don't know about your button issue though.

X10 / Arc Sneak Peak Comparison/Mini-Review

Hello everybody!
I got a chance to play around with an Xperia Arc (preview version, NOT final) and I've created this short review and comparison of the new features.
absolutely amazing!
Thanks.
You should say that your X10 has JIT. Mine even beats the Arc, I get 34.974 in Linpack, but overall the Arc is faster and smoother.
I'm looking forwad to the 2.3.3 update for our X10s.
Then we can make a fair comparison...

Nice video by the way! Though it really shows that you're using an early model of the arc since it seems to lag so much, especially when pinching in the homescreens. I've seen it run buttery smooth on other videos.

The guy made an effort to compare his X10 to an Arc, and you decide to argue again Come on!!
Most of the videos available have the uncompleted 2.3 similar to the one showed in the first video, that's why you saw many lags. However, the polished product will be smoother and better, it's always smoother.
Of course you'll have lag here and there once or twice, especially if you're running something for the first time while it caching...
I think we are two steps away from having lag-free android OS. Even Honeycomb has some lags from what I tested
Edit: Look at the Japanese version "SO-01C", you'll notice it's much smoother than most of the videos you watched since it's polished and finalized ( released already )

Here is mine. The lag is not bad, but pretty much everywhere. Obviously an issue with 4.2.2. I don't know. When it doesn't lag the phone is super smooth. I hope they fix this soon.
Samsung obviously didn't optimize their software to run properly on 4.2.2. Makes me miss how fluid the UI was on the Note 2.

Can you do one after the reset. And another one with ALL the gimick features off? Thanks.
Noticed exactly the same on my mates gs3 - it was unusable, up to 3 seconds till home launcher and frequent redraws.
Samsung completely kills androids performance, and for that price and hardware its a shame.
Thats why many people prefer apple - my iPod Touch with 200 apps still runned better than my mates gs3 for almost the double price with 50 apps. Android is getting very, very slow after some use. Calls, sms, apps, after every month you'll loose lets say 10% of performance, related to how you use your phone, more performance loss in the beginning, less after some use.
And touchwiz makes everything sloooww :/
You only notice, when you install 300 apps on iPhone and gs4. Gs4 will lag, I can gurantee.
Especially 4.2.2 was a kind of downgrade, lots things are "tasty" things, you may like or not.
IF Google could bring beak Gingerbreads performance and ram managment + project butter and some new features on android 5.0, I would marry them
I just did this video about 10 minutes ago and would like to get some input on it. I will try to do when in more depth video when I have time.

All of those were off and my model was made in Korea.

Well based on the polls. They said the korean one has lag but it's minimal. and it appears to be quite minimal on your phone. so it's "normal".
