Thoughts on 2.1 - Streak 5 General

For those that remember, I dropped my streak cracking the screen. o2 gave me a new one - I shall be far more careful in the future.
Anyways I just upgraded to the 2.1, and prior to this (on 1.6) I liked the phone (but didn't love it as I did my HTC Desire and HD2).
However, with the new firmware, the phone is a million times better. The live wall paper looks amazing on the 5" screen, there is a really cool one with various music visualizations. What is even more impressive is the live wallpaper can be tilted up and down, its 3D!
The phone is a lot snappier and more responsive. There is definitely less lag when switching screens or opening programs.
The new dialer and gallery programs look a lot nicer. To be honest the dialer on 1.6 was really depressing.
BUT
The deal maker for me - The camera is infinitely better. There is no longer any shutter lag (which plagued the 1.6) and photos in dark conditions are better, and whilst the 720p video won't rival a sony handcam it is a massive improvement.
All in all very impressed. This should keep me going till the desire HD comes out!

a positive 2.1 review. im really hoping i will be able to get 2.1 on my US streak because i think thats what will make the phone for me.

what fps u gettin with 720p ... some ppl are sayin like 8fps ... ?

The camcorder captures above 8fps, but its certainly not 25/30fps. I would estimate 18fps.
Here is a video I took earlier.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPAoNRcaMPY&feature=channel

It's far better than 1.6 but the keyboard is REALLY horrible, very slow and no numpad and I make far more mistakes than the previous keyboard...

i thought it was supposed to be 24fps. which i think is rediculously slow but what do you expect, its a phone.

I've noticed with it that the fps jumps about a bit but cant really complain as this 2.1 build does feel like a beta so.

The final 2.1 may be 24fps who knows but it is an improvement whatever fps it is

you dont need to estimate.. you can get the info from inside the camera app.

i bet it will depend on room lighting. if you have 2.1, try in high light and low light. also try with lower video resolutions.

Anyone else think that 2.1 has made sound louder when playing music and videos Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

15fps on the cam apparently....damm

Well ever since i got my streak on release date i've loved it
Had been waiting on 2.1 as i knew this would make the phone even better and oh boy it's really amazing.
The live wallpapers, currently using beautiful widgets live wallpaper n it's a real eyecatcher for all my mates, so much so 2 mates r upgrading to it.
I've only got one problem in that i couldn't wait to get flash.... bbc iplayer full site on my streak...heaven... n here is the problem.. can i get flash 10.1 to download..nope.. really frustrating as it would be great.
if u like big phones then this is the phone for u, u'll not be dissapointed.
But if someone can help with the flash prob then pleeeeaassee let me know

Ev vern if you can download flash you won't get it to work as it designed to work on 2.2. Some one has tried this.
I am also looking forward to getting flash.....just wish dell would hurry up

well I have HD2 also, and the cam is pretty good. but on the 1.6 of my Streak is the shutter lag really terrible. much slower as of the HD2...and the flash is very poor... If the quality doesnt get better in 2.1 i will have to send the Streak back
Does anyone know if the dell streak will allow you to keep the flash on while recording video? Any difference in this from 1.6 vs 2.1 or if it makes a difference?
Also, I know it's off topic but can you watch youtube videos in HQ in the youtube app?
The camera has been improved, but not by much. At least it's usable now though.
The 720p filming is pretty damn good though
and yes, you can watch HQ videos in the youtube app.

Thanks Meltus, How about having the flash on while recording video. I know that is mainly a froyo thing but some devices with 2.1 have implimented it so though it may be possible on a new device. One can dream..
Also, was the 720p only added with the 2.1 update?
I have also heard horror stories about the keyboard on 2.1. That is probably the only thing keeping me from forcing this update. How do you like the keyboard with the 2.1 update?
The camera is slightly better, but the app is now hideous. It really is ugly and far less usable. However we should remember the leaked ROM is beta at best, its not an official release.

No, there's no flash (will probably come with 2.2) and they've also got rid of the zoom-before-you-film, which is annoying.
Yes, 720p was only added with the 2.1 beta leak.
They keyboard isn't as bad as everyone says, whilst it is a HUGE step backwards it is still usable (i use swype anyway, so it doesn't bother me).
But the camera layout is now dreadful, because when you go into the settings menu and select something, you cannot then go back to change something else, you have to close the settings menu then re-open it, which is VERY annoying.

Played with a Galaxy S. Smooth but why?

I played with a Samsung Galaxy S (Bell phone at a Canadian Best Buy) and I was amazed at how fluid all the menus were. Everything was so smooth. "Smooth" is the word I want to use because I'm not sure how else to explain it.
To use a video game analogy it looked like it was running at 60 fps vs 30 fps. So it wasn't faster...but smoother.
I'm trying to figure out why it's so much smoother than the X10.
Is it the screen? (Super AMOLED)
Is it the A8 processor?
Is it Android 2.1?
Any ideas?
Maybe a combination of the OS 2.1 and the GPU advantage over the X10. I personally think it is mainly the GPU performance over the X10.
Is the 2.1 and Samsung customization.
Is 'fluid' the word you're looking for?
Sent from my x10 using XDA and swype.
One of my mates has a galaxy s and another has a nexus one. I find both of these phones to be equally "fluid" and as the nexus one has very similar specifications to the x10 I am more inclined to say that it is all to do with the firmware.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
mainly it's because of 2.1 firmware!
I'm eager to see 2.1 or even 2.2 on X10.especially with SE customizations an UI.
untill you've owned one for a while.
every phone seems great the first time you use it. I used a desire running froyo the other day and found it to be crap. scrolling was jittery, browser was slow when loading flash sites, and the ui was not intuitive in the least.
I really wish the samsung/htc trolls would stop clogging up our x10 thread.
mods, please close this thread, it's pointless
Ya, I think fluid is the right term. It was really nice. Not sure about the phone styling (still prefer the x10) but the "fluidity" was great.

This is part of it. The X10 was awesome in the store. get home, add a lot of apps, music, widgets, contacts and it tends to slow/studder a bit. I'm not sure if other phones are like that too - but a bare phone in the store always seems to be fast/smooth.
you prob played with an extremely "clean" phone. I mean how many apps? how many contacts? did u happen to try the gps ?
any phone (even my htc s710) runs nice out of the box, but fill it with apps, contacts, background tasks, etc start running it will slow down.
as well, im sure the firmware will have something to do with the speed

i do not see the relevance?
since a Blu-Ray movie has 1080p res and 24 FPS.
I can tell you from experience that once you've loaded up a decent amount of things on the Captivate that it's not so fast. It plays games well still, but the system gets pretty laggy.
Hmm, well ive used a galaxy s too, i didnt notice a difference, but since the update to 026 my phone has been super smooth anyway. No lag or jitters at all...

Hey Galaxy S Experts>> Can you help me?

Alright fellas! pls don't shoot me if im repeating a common question, im currently using an HTC Desire & my friends are telling me that their galaxy S i9000 is better. I've done my research & I kinda like it but there is alot of negative vibe cus of the gps & video calling features.
I have 4 questions:
a. Is video calling practical both on wifi/3g? And what apps can we use to make video calls((Skype, Fring, Tango, gtalk{ve used gtalk video calling on my N900}))?
b. Is the internal memory(RAM) is sufficient for apps?
c. And does it gives problem for gps locking using maps.?
D>> Would you buy Galaxy S over HTC Desire, keep in mind desire has a solid Sense UI?
Im ready to make a move but im much concerned before i make a move, Im quite happy with my desire. You help is much appreciated. thanks.
I compared my SGS with my friend's Desire the other day, when he was doing something with his HTC and he said "hey download this and that..." and I was embarrased that my SGS was so laggy (seconds to open maps, to respond to touch, pinch...) and also the GPS worked like a charm, when with my SGS I want to throw the phone to someone because it doesn't get a lock D
But don't worry, I disabled some applications and widgets from Beautiful Widgets and it's as fast as a lightning. I think it's the file system so you need a lag fix, you can download from here DDDD
I'm running stock Froyo JPO. People here are running JPZ and custom ROMs and they perform way better and have better GPS.
The screen is way better than Desire, and the processor/GPU too.

Unless you need 720p recording, or are rich, you are using a device which is the same generation device as the SGS anyway.. Why do you think it makes sense to upgrade?

Xperia X10... How BAD can it be?!

In my urge to find something "different" I'm considering purchasing an X10, but all the reviews say it's just terrible...
Honestly, how bad can it be? Is this just tainted blood from when it was first released on 1.6? Am I wrong in thinking that it's a very usable device, either with the latest updates, or on a rom from the dev section?
I'd say wait another month when it gets Gingerbread and look for reviews then.
Right now, I wouldn't recommend buying it, no matter what custom rom you put on it. There are better phones you can get with the same price.
Ofcourse, I love the design, camera, UI, etc but the screen is so unbelievably bad right now, it goes over anything else
What do you mean the screen is bad? Response or the image on the screen?

I totally agree.
Most of the people that reviewed the x10 used it with Android 1.6.
IMHO, it's as bad as you think it is. But as Mr Patchy said what's the most important thing or feature do you want on a phone?
In my case, I just want a stylish, camera phone that has ANY Android OS in it be 1.6, 2.1 or 2.3, so with or without the GB update, I am quite satisfied.
Of course, any new features are welcome.

Well yes....but not 1.6. If you can remember 1.6 the screen was terrible!!! But since 2.1 SE adjusted colors and made it a very nice display imho. But, yes I to find it important to have a quality camera on my phone....big big reason why I ditched my nexus one for my very first X10. Then everything else just fell in place. I need a quality cam, reliable signal, decent battery life, and a usable messaging system, with an accurate keyboard.
That's about it.
Camera, signal, and battery life are just fine. It's not the fastest phone. It's still pretty laggy even when optimized. Things should really improve with the 2.3 upgrade but even with that, there are faster, more powerful, and featured phones out there.
For the average smartphone user, the major downside to this phone is the low in call volume. I've had to purchase a bluetooth speakerphone for the car (which is great actually). Taking a call in a loud environment is awful.

I've had my x10 since march. Ive had other droids before and an iphone as well but what i really needed was the great camera that the x10 does have. I've always read people having problems with low in call volume but I can say that i've never had that problem myself. I never used the phone with 1.6, when i got it the 2.1 update was already released, so i never experienced the dreadfulness (some say) that was the 1.6 rom.
The x10 is a very beautiful and stylish phone (specially the white one) with an outstanding camera, HD video and android. I can agree, that the rom (The SE one anyway) is not the fastest or more responsive thing on earth, but I don't find it too horrible either. now that it has the dual touch, the large display is a lot better to handle, even if not perfect.
I say go for it. try to find the one dubbed x10 HD (one that comes with 2.1 out of the box), because it is my understanding that it has a better display module that looks even better than the first x10s did.

If you want to make calls with your phone DON'T buy a X10! The in-call volume still is the worst I ever experienced in my life. All those updates, hacks or custom kernels didn't change anything. When you aren't in a church or library understanding someone is a challenge.

One thing to consider is how long you plan to use this phone. The X10 Is about to receive android 2.3. This however will be the last official android upgrade that it will receive. I'm close to the end of a 2 year contract so this is not such an issue for me. Granted if you are planning to use a custom roms it won't be a big issue for you either.
Edit;

It's stability ranges from no issue's at all to overheating, "usb & chipset" death.
Support from SE is very much lacking.
The x10 does not do well in low signal area's and will overheat and chew thru the battery on 3G.
The camera is nice but unfortunately lacks a flash.
The screen is great even with only 16Bit color.
It's upto you but i would suggest another handset.

Feedback on new AT&T ROM

So I installed it yesterday (and thanks to all those who helped).
I think the new ROM is FANTASTIC. Everything works for me, its faster than before and I have no lags. Im using Launcher Pro because the new Blur doesn't support scrolling widgets.
Battery is definitely better (turned on at 6am and had 15% at 6pn which us amazing for me).
Camera has been improved. Pictures look sharper and the colors no longer look weird. I owned an sgs2 and to me the pictures are just as good (and definitely better than the Sensation I owned for a bit). Its also much faster (put it in sport mode and virtually immediate).
Fingerprint reader works. Properly. Period.
Sound on speaker is excellent. Its still the best device on the market.
Sound on earpiece might be a little quieter. I am not certain on this but its something I noticed on my first call.
Gps lock is very quick. It was before too.
Software. Wow what a MASSIVE improvement. Email software is finally useable readable and possibly as good as Sense. Widgets are also better, like weather. Photo software and gallery better. MUSIC is a different application totally. I think I preferred the old one or just need to get used to it. Dialer is improved. Video playback is still great and again an area where this device excels over others I have owned. Animations also very cool. Top bar and notifications simply better than before. Entire color scheme is improved.
Stock keyboard is better but I still make a lot of mistakes when typing. HTC still make the best Android keyboard IMHO and I wish I could port the Sensation keyboard.
Overall its just more elegant and mire pleasurable ti use. For the first time I feel like its a device to show off. I really believe its the best device out there. Had Moto started out with this ROM it would have been considered a device as good as the HD2 in its day.

After one day on gingerbread, I'd have to say the keyboard's the biggest improvement for me. An @ key without having to press alt first? Yes! Long press keys for numbers? Yes!
I agree. It's a fantastic upgrade and the new skin is slick....my only complaint is that homescreen scrolling isn't as fast as I expected. The forest LWP is a little slow, and pinch to zoom on stock camera gallery isn't as good as my previous phone or 3rd party market apps

its is an amazing difference
before making the plunge I wud like to know from u guys about the screen gradient issues
is it solved??
like skin tones appeared really odd and washed out
I thot it was a software issue as the screen grabs also showed them on my PC
that was a big gripe for me but for the otherwise near perfect phone
and ya camera quality was also really poor

I freakin love the new ROM. Thanks KP!
They have made a smart move by selecting a color scheme that greatly reduces the effect of the inherent technical limitations of a Pentile LCD! Its better than Froyo but I guess only because of the color scheme they have decided to go with!

Loving the new rom so far. I do think the cardock app got worse (looks better, but fewer custom buttons). I love how you can uninstall apps using a long press from the app drawer.
I'm also looking forward to trying the ignore call, respond with text option.
Last thing, wish the default music app worked with Google Music Beta... installed the Google one instead.

Overall, this seems to be working pretty fantastically for me except for a few things.
- Contact List can get REALLY slow sometimes. (15 seconds to load up a contact's information!)
- Unlocking (the screen, not the phone) can get slow, as well as Facebook and a few other apps. Haven't fully tested yet.
Is this happening to anyone else?
So far, i'm loving the new blur, everything is working fine for me.but i hope this is not the final blur version, because i was watching a demo of blur for droid3 on youtube it looks a little bit better then this. The swipe between screens was different and the quick contact widget was different and more useful.
