Qik video quality SUCKS

So i've put a few videos on qik's site, and the quality SUCKS. I thought it was actually supposed to look good but it's extremely pixelated, even in HQ mode.

Which camera did you use? 8MP is on the back one but the one in front is 1.3, just enough to convey your emotions and face more than be high def or anything.

Videos taken with the one in the back look no better then ones taken with the one in the front.

I'm really hoping that the video quality is a matter of HTC or Qik compressing the ever loving hell out of the final result. If so, I sure hope it can be changed via root.

i agree, i tried to stream with the 8mp cam on as high a quality as i could get and still, the video comes out pixelated and poor.

I also hope this, can anyone confirm one way or the other, where/when is it compressed, upon recording, or while saving? Is it fixable; it does seem pretty poor for a High Definition camera, no?

the extra 5 a month is supposed to allow greater resolution. go figure.
screw them. fring with skype is at least that good, and its free.
someone will come out with a free alternative, albeit with ads, i'm sure

Wow, that is terrible. WTF Qik / Sprint, ugh, you would think 720p HD it would be a whole lot better.

Sucks but about what I expected. Bandwidth isn't free.

what exactly are you expecting from your cell phone? that looks pretty darn good in my opinion. Sure it's not a 720p DVD quality, but again, what are you expecting from you cell phone?

sure, but as we are in a 'premium' demo you would expect more. I would expect this quality from free qik but not for paying monthly for it.

Kicking off this week’s battle between the HTC EVO (unboxing) and Samsung’s Epic 4G (unboxing, update and Media Hub first run), is a post covering the cameras. First, a video walking through the software on each device, followed by a series of video and photo samples. All video samples were shot in 720p HD with reminaing settings left at defaults. Don’t forget to select 720p from the resultion playback menu for the YouTube vids! Yikes, hate to say it...... but you know........

someone needs to figure out how to get our fps up on cam record!!!! this hurts... lol

I really don't understand the fascination of mega pixels on smartphones. It's good for marketing but when it comes to actual use.. you realize that they probably sacrificed the quality of the sensor for a higher number. A good example of this is the FF cam, the EVO's shoots at 1.3 MP and the iPhone 4's shoots at a measly VGA resolution, yet the difference in quality is like night and day (in favor of the iPhone 4).
All things being equal, more is better but I'd still argue that a high MP count is useless on smartphones. It takes up more space and is very, very rarely ever going to be displayed at full resolution. 99% of the photos you take on a smartphone will be resized for use on Facebook/Twitter/MMS/or general web use.
I hope HTC realizes this when designing their future phones.

Does the evo video just suck when its at such a high resolution? Is framerate better when you lower the resolution?

wonder if the fps unlock will effect the video camera as well.

Wow, I used to think our camera was good. Very good comparison though, especially the night video. Even the sound quality on the Epic is great. Too bad everything else about it sucks.

How do you know how much I use my camera? And I can bet MOST people here use the camera a lot more than 1 - 2 days per month. Plus the Epic's Super AMOLED screen is also A LOT nicer than ours. Thats about all the Epic has over the EVO though.

The CPU/GPU (which downright crushes the EVO) and Super AMOLED screen doesn't suck. I was also pretty satisfied by the size of the display the couple of times that I've seen a Galaxy S phone. It's definitely not perfect but there's no need to be a EVO fanboy.

In my tests with the evo and epic in video, I found some interesting results to me at least. Note, I haven't looked at the article posted by op yet. I found that when both are set to 1280x720 and 640x480, the epic has color saturation that seems closer to real life than the evo. Evo's was exaggerated. The epic's focus seemed a little sharper. Those two resolutions were the only ones I saw that both had in common, so that's what I tested at. One bad thing about the epic was when it was at 1280, after a few minutes or less, the camera app would crash with an error and the video was corrupted. I shortened the time at that resolution to about a minute and the test was fine. I didn't include sound in testing because my car was too noisy and would be too irritating to listen to during playback. I haven't posted them to youtube yet because I want to do an effect of putting both videos together side by side but I can't figure out how to do that easily. I don't have any experience in that end of video editing. I also noticed something that is already known to many people, the evo compresses the video too damn much and the video looks pretty bad sometimes. The filesizes from the epic are noticeably larger because it isn't compressing as much. I forget if there was an encoder choice in the phones or not. I might have remembered that from another rom...
I am not, repeat not, trying to slam the evo. I still love that phone very much. I'm just reporting my findings and opinion.

I have the evo and the epic and the camera is way better on the epic then the evo even taking pictures at night the epic looks like it was day time full color everything on the evo you see pixels from a picture shot in the dark

Wow. HTC can't code camera drivers worth ****t. HTC camera is from the same company as the iPhone 4's camera...I see why Samsung used the phone to film the TV ads...The HD video looks damn good!
Tooo bad the G S has so many other problems that Samsung will never fix. Apple is really good as getting everything working perfectly, at least.

well in that case you should of bought a camera instead.

Samsung always has and probably will continue to have a better phone cameras than HTC. Thats one thing Sammy does right. Too bad the cons outweigh the pros in everything else though.
My Samsung moment pics Id say were on par with the EVO if not a little better, and the max was 5mp with that phone. I never got that motion blur that I get using HTC.

I actually don't care which camera is best or video, it's handy to have for the odd this or that kind of thing. But I carry a camera for quality pictures and a camcorder for movies if I'm going somewhere that I know I will want that sort of thing.
There are times when you just don't have the camera or camcorder handy, so in that case use the phone.
I too got the EVO for the 4.3" screen so I can see it without having to put glasses on.

I just bought the Kodak Playsport HD Camcorder. I doubt the camera issue will ever get fixed

qft. If you want high quality pics then you should have a camera. There is a reason why cameras are still being sold even though most phones have a built in one.

Is 720P Important to You?

Hey guys, quick question for nexus one users. Do you guys consider taking 720p video important? I know you could do the 720p hack, but the quality is so-so with alot of stuttering. Do you guys find vid recording a selling point or just a perk thats not really necessary.

Yes i use it and love it. i find the micro stuttering is from a slow sd card. It wasn't a selling point for me since its not a stock feature

if you turn off auto focus, it's pretty good. i call 720p a good selling point, and from now on a must have for a phone.

I'd trade 720p for better quality pictures, so no, it's not that important to me, but nice to have nevertheless.

forgot to put in the reason why im asking.
i love the vanilla UI and i LOVE (you have no idea) the Nexus One styling. This is the phone i wanted for a really long time. But the thing is, the nexus one is lacking in apps (one in particular that i play everyday, bejewled blitz) and its lacking in the HD recording department (and touch to focus). Im trying to decide if those two things are worth going back to the iphone. The ironic thing is, i dont even take videos on the iphone. i think its the fact that its nice to have.

You're comparing a year old phone with a few months old phone...not working, compare it with the 3Gs!
I don't have an iPhone 4 but I'm pretty sure the iPhone has better video/picture quality than the Nexus

It's not that important to me now, but may be in the near future...

It is not as good as the iPhone 4's but the Nexus One is an older, less powerful phone. The video quality is adequate.

Wow thats really good quality video. Not really a pic/video person but glad my n1 will take quality video.

I've used the video capabilities exactly one time.

I can do that in CM6 ... if I understand you right. I'm able to change focus method in the middle of the recording.

I agree with some of the posts here.
I don't care about the 720p recording but it's good to have it but I'd also definetly trade it for better quality on my photos

Really bad audio on video recordings :(:(

hi..i m currently using the native camera app to capture videos...video quality is very good...but the audio is crap...i was recording a live concert...not exactly a concert though...live music performance...the video turned out very good but the audio really sucked...
since the phones mic is the only source...i would like to know if there is an app that can record good quality videos with decent sound...?
Or is there anyway i can remove noise from the recordings using a software on the pc...any convertor that will convert the video to a format which will output the audio better.
P.S the audio is real bad...just not acceptable...its very hazzy and full of noise
Note : settings used were...720p..mpeg4 codec.

I second the OPs inquiry...

The answer, as always, is CM. Video and audio quality is superior in CM.

2.3 fixes this via a new ACC codec. CM7, which is very much alpha, is the best choice. Whether that's worth flashing just for that fix is up to you.

Don't do this yet, though. The camcorder is still not working on CM7.

i hv no time to flash CM or 2.3 right now...was looking for a quick fix...some app/codec or tweak that will enable me to record better audio...or i don mind if theres a software for the pc which will rectify the recordings later...i need to do 3 hrs of live recording tomm...and sound is very vital !

If it is so vital and you don't have time to flash a ROM, then march yourself to Best Buy or your nearest electronics store and buy a camcorder. Relying on a "phone" to record "vital" video and audio is not the way to go.

^^ camcorder is out of budget...already spent a lot on d evo..so need to wait a while to get a good camcorder...

yes, the video quality is pretty bad even at the max settings. i've never been happy with it.
if you got it less than a month ago, and the video is THAT important to you, you should return the phone and get an even exchange for the Samsung Epic.
The video recording on the Epic is amazing. Even better than the iPhone 4. My wife has it and i'm totally jealous of her video quality, which rivals our flip camcorder.
Besides that, the Evo is a much better phone in almost every way.
but if you're specifically looking for an amazing camcorder and not much else, go get yourself an Epic.

i donno but technically evo should record better video and audio as opposed to epic...the fact that evo has 8mp...mpeg4 codecs and features like light correction etc...i know 8mp don matter much but technically more the pixels better is the resolution and naturally better quality....is software the culprit in case of evo or is it that i m missing something abt the hardware of both phones ?

The point that you are missing is you are trying to use a phone as a replacement for a camcorder.

MP means very little outside of how many pixels at maximum the photo can be made of. With EVO vs Epic video recording its a non issue since both record at the same size -720p- and no larger. Outside of MP, the Epic's sensor is just better; it may capture less pixels at its maximum but the pixels that it does capture will be of higher quality. A lot of people have said that the Epic takes better photos than the iPhone 4; and we just had a long thread where it was found out that the reason why the iPhone 4 shoots better than the EVO is because it does indeed have a better sensor. That's likely the same reason why the SGS/Epic are better too.

HTC makes great phones, but are notorious for making horrible camera sensors. This is because, besides from tacking them on to phones, the DON'T MAKE CAMERAS and have no experience in it and little budget to fix it up.
On the other hand, Samsung has been making digital cameras for the last 10 years and are even better known for their cameras than their phones. So, they have more money and research behind this form of technology. So they just slay at making cameras for phones as well.

Has very little to do with what he said. The iPhone and EVO use sensors from the same company. The difference is in product direction. Apple aims for quality, HTC aims for numbers. People expect Apple products to be easy and to work good; most of them don't have a clue what a mega pixel is or does. HTC doesn't have the same product positioning as Apple so they rely on marketing numbers to persuade people (3 more MP then the iPhone 4!!!). At least that's my view.

Is this really true? I always though that whenever i recorded or took pics with a CM rom it look a little bit better pics or shot better vids than any sense rom just did not know it was ture, or is it? What makes it better?

Dump crappy video into a great editing program and you can turn out a relatively acceptable video. As a commenter on that blog stated:

when i try and record audio with my evo it sounds like utter CRAP! the evo cant handle loud noises at concerts AT ALL. the iphone 4 on the other hand can record loud concerts like a charm!

Um, it's a music video, i.e. a video with the sound being the actual song. The song obviously was recorded in a studio, not on the evo.

all music videos use the final recorded production audio, most times a lot of directors will have the music playing in the background to help the artist keep the timing, and also that was my post on the sprint forum..haha, not that it matters at all, i just dont like it because this video will easily spread mis-information about the evo's capabilities and i generally find it somewhat underhanded when a company does that

I also noticed there wasn't a lot of movement in the video, that helps with the smoother and clearer picture. And yea all music videos have the studio or pre recorded audio over the original recordings and synced, its not that difficult to do, even for the iPhone user

The Evo's video looks like ass for anything other than videos of your friends/family (i.e. camcorder ****). There's no reason to ever record anything professional with it unless you're using the gimmick of shooting on a phone. Nobody would ever have watched this if it were not shot on the Evo. I take personal offense to things like this because ****ty cameras that can shoot "HD VIDEO OMG" are being used in place of actual cameras like the Arri Alexa, driving down production costs/budgets, reducing quality of produced material in general, oversaturating the market with poorly shot material, and ultimately, driving MY paycheck down. Put the god damn time and money into concept/story/quality and stop ****ing around with cheap, flash-in-the-pan technogarbage.

She was just trying to do something different, and some unknown artist like herself probably isn't working with a big budget in the first place. I also wouldn't be surprised if sprint helped out with the production costs. Don't hate if its putting her name out there and getting plays, there are other people out there that made a music video with an evo, but this is by far the best quality and most professional I've seen yet.
