Is 720P Important to You? - Nexus One General

Hey guys, quick question for nexus one users. Do you guys consider taking 720p video important? I know you could do the 720p hack, but the quality is so-so with alot of stuttering. Do you guys find vid recording a selling point or just a perk thats not really necessary.

Yes i use it and love it. i find the micro stuttering is from a slow sd card. It wasn't a selling point for me since its not a stock feature

if you turn off auto focus, it's pretty good. i call 720p a good selling point, and from now on a must have for a phone.

*lol, like the vid!

I'd trade 720p for better quality pictures, so no, it's not that important to me, but nice to have nevertheless.

forgot to put in the reason why im asking.
i love the vanilla UI and i LOVE (you have no idea) the Nexus One styling. This is the phone i wanted for a really long time. But the thing is, the nexus one is lacking in apps (one in particular that i play everyday, bejewled blitz) and its lacking in the HD recording department (and touch to focus). Im trying to decide if those two things are worth going back to the iphone. The ironic thing is, i dont even take videos on the iphone. i think its the fact that its nice to have.
being stuck in the middle blows.

CM6 video has touch to focus and continuous auto-focus in video.

You're comparing a year old phone with a few months old phone...not working, compare it with the 3Gs!
I don't have an iPhone 4 but I'm pretty sure the iPhone has better video/picture quality than the Nexus

It's not that important to me now, but may be in the near future...

It is not as good as the iPhone 4's but the Nexus One is an older, less powerful phone. The video quality is adequate.

Wow thats really good quality video. Not really a pic/video person but glad my n1 will take quality video.

thanks for the replies guys. i guess i'll use the nexus one as a primary phone and carry the iphone if i go places i need to record videos.

i would just like some mod that can enable the auto focus when im recording something

not really important but always good to have.. loving cm6.1rc1

I've used the video capabilities exactly one time.
Don't think that 720p would do anything for me.

I can do that in CM6 ... if I understand you right. I'm able to change focus method in the middle of the recording.

I agree with some of the posts here.
I don't care about the 720p recording but it's good to have it but I'd also definetly trade it for better quality on my photos

improvements to video with Froyo

What exactly did HTC fix or improve in video recording? Running stock 2.1 every 5 seconds i had sound problems where it would sort of pause for about one second and now on a different evo with 2.2 same problem. Anyone else experienced this?
This is only when recording with 720p.

I had this problem in 2.1. Haven't had a chance to test it in 2.2. I'll try to post back when I have tested it.
Not having your problem, but a bigger one. Fresh 2.2 - 3.0.1 and shot a lot of outdoor videos this week in Hawaii using lots of different settings: h.254/480 and MPEG4/720 - It all looks like ****!!! Therefore, a much bigger problem.

evo is a terrible recording device. The software is junk, the parts are junk. Theres no end to how frustrated I am with the audio quality of the videos recorded. Instead of lugging around a dedicated video recorder and a phone I think I might just get an iphone 4.. I love recording videos and uploading them to youtube/facebook for people to see my life @ concerts,clubs.. its just retarded how htc boned us and cheaped out on one of the most important selling points of this phone.. I agree with this. The video recording on the EVO is a total joke. 720p my ass! More like 120p.
Droid X and iPhone 4 are worlds apart in this category. Sad!
Personally, I don't think the photo camera is all that good either. In fact I think its also **** for a so-called 8MP camera.

I tempered my expectations because I knew it was a phone, but when two of your selling points are 8mp camera and 720p recording they should be decent.
I have had good luck using the camera, and I gotten great shots (especially considering it is a phone) But the stock camcorder was HORRIBLE, and it makes 720p fans cry!
Cyanogen's rom has made video recording better for me.

This genius took the plastic off in the store.
This genius is also a professional photographer and knows the limitations of cameras and lenses so I expected little from a cell phone, but I experienced less than I expected.
The video is not 720p, that is a downright lie.
The 8mp camera, yes it is 8mp, but it is poor quality.
I run CM6 and it has a slightly better take on the cam and camcorder.
Even after multiple attempts to adjust the media_profiles.xml and the different configuration files there is little we can get from it. There is an entire thread about this is 28 pages long.

^^^ very good point.
Plus I would imagine that utilising a 720p resolution is goig to have a major impact on the already mediocre framerate.
IMO theres not much point having 720p recording if its going to be at 5fps.
Hopefully im wrong and it will be silky smooth at 720p
Well on robsbay.co.uk it has said for a while now that 720p is defiantly working but isn't in any builds yet.
I'm not sure if he actually means defiantly or definitely...
X2 on 720 not being worth it. High resolution video through a crummy lens is just a bad idea. Giant crappy video is still crappy video. Pick up a Kodak Zi8 if you want HD video on the cheap.

I disagree... yes, the quality will always be worse than a real video camera but the same applies to still images. DSLRs are head and shoulders above the best camera phone, so would you say camera phones might as well have stayed at VGA resolution instead of 5 or 8 MP common these days?
Unless there are framerate issues I'd love HD video capture. Some phones it's not so great, but some are pretty impressive given everything (the Samsung Galaxy S seem to do pretty crisp 720p).

720p video recording quality

Am i the only one disappointed with the quality of our videos? Even with enough lighting the video always seems to fall way below the "advertised" 30fps.
This is the only feature i envy iPhone 4 users of, the ability of recording constant 30fps 720p videos with good audio quality.

Spell it right, it's "night."
I've done some recording and the quality is good enough for me. Yes, the hardware is better on the iPhone 4, but I'm satisfied with what my phone delivers.
I'd only call it terrible if it's skipping constantly and/or recording below 20 frames. Can you seriously tell the difference between 24 and 30 frames per second? Would that be distracting for the given audience that your video is intended for?

720P recording

I love everything about the G2 besides our video cam peformance... i used an Epic 4G and the video was night & day difference, i couldnt believe how nice it looked compared to our G2's.
I envy Epic 4G (Samsung Galaxy S phone) users and iPhone 4 users.

SD card maybe?
Trust me, the Epic 4G in 720p was a night & day difference. I couldnt believe how smooth it recorded compared to my G2. My videos were slow & choppy @ 720p while the Epic 4G was smooth like an iPhone 4G.

I've never seen another phone record HD video better than an iPhone 4. That being said, if you step down the quality on the G2 it actually looks pretty good. Also the macro on the camera is surprisingly good with adequate lighting.

I didn't even mention the 720p recording, but I agree it's below average in the current crop of smartphones. The thing is, all phones are pretty bad in low light so I don't think that's a good reason to hate on the camera. When I shoot outside with the G2 on lower quality it does look good, plain and simple.

Uh no it's not. Have you seen the quality of the Nokia N8. Blows away the IP4.
Low light is exceptional, dual mic recording, very high bitrate recording etc...
See here: http://vimeo.com/14903500
I think the OP has a point. If they are going to offer 720P then why not make a lens and sensor that is capable of producing a decent quality video.
Can you imagine if you took the quality of the hardware of a Nokia camera and combined it the awesomeness of Android?
I had the N8 and IP4 but I love the versatility of Android and had to come back. Telling people to go buy an iPhone is not the right reaction. Telling HTC to make a damn good camera for once is!

Like the G2 is cheaper than the N8? lol
I don't mind paying for quality.
Right, if you're going to advertise "720p video at 30fps!!!" then actually meet that quote. The G2 is one of the best Android phone out there so it's a shame that they can't even include a decent lens/sensor that actually records at 720p @ 30fps.
Not a deal breaker, but like i said it's lame to see a Samsung Galaxy S phone capable of doing it but we can't on ours because of some cheap ass lens/sensor/hardware limitation.
Oh and the audio quality is just horrible too - and yes i know, if i want HD video with good quality audio/video use a camcorder. But you know I paid good money for these new devices and they are advertising good quality video/audio so why settle for less? Unless you have a camcorder with you everywhere you go, your phone is sometimes the only option to capture events that maybe only happens once in a lifetime.
Just a thought.
Although I love the g2 I side with the ones saying video is kinda mediocre... G2 kicks butt in benchmarks and etc, so I was expecting video to be up there too.. the quality is iffy, esp don't like the bad audio quality.. to be honest it seems its like my G1 only in "HD"
I don't like to settle for less.. usually... but when other phones do a lot better.. eh.
However id take physical keyboard over smooth hd

Yes me too, thanks for the reponse, I wish it will come with.
Doubt it, think only the iphone 4s/5 have video stabilization, and of course the new lumia 920.
Digital image stabilization is a gimmick and rarely works well. From seeing video comparisons, it basically crops the image in order to be able to compensate for the excessive movement, so the quality suffers.
Even if the stock app doesn't have digital image stabilization I'm sure it won't be long before the market app ICS+ Camera works on 4.2 (if it doesn't already already). You can just toggle stabilization in the settings.

But I wish I will have this choice w Google software.
I know this a technique far from being perfect yet. But last year I went travelling with my SGS2, recorded more than 200Gb in videos, recorded a LOT, but in the end, most of the videos where useless, the vibration of the walking or of my inexpert turning ruined great moments. ICS and Jellybean (4.12) has image stabilization so I don't see why they would remove the feature. So I'm going to say "yes" it will have it.
Someone asked if there was a better way of doing image stabilization and the answer is yes. The new Nokia 920 (Windows 8 phone) has optical image stabilization (the lens itself moves to compensate for any shaking). Apparently it's fantastic.
It's the same tech that's been in camcorders and camera for years. Just coming to phones now. According to the Engadget Mobile guys LG is working on their own optical image stabilization system but it's not ready yet.

Wow 200gb? If you were going to record that excessively, you should have used a dedicated camcorder, especially since you were traveling.

In case anyone is still looking for an answer it does not appear to support image stabilization. It is not in the options for the camera app, but I decided to go one step further and check the API.
Camera.Parameter.isVideoStabilizationSupported() on my Nexus 4 returns false. So I believe this is a definitive no.
