AT&T Smartphone Data Usage Alert for X10 - XPERIA X10 General

This morning I got text from AT&T that they moved me from my $15 unlimited data plan to $25 2GB smartphone dataplan . Did this happen to anyone? I am wondering is this has got anything to do with X10 coming to AT&T soon? My wife has Nokia N97 and she didn't get the message (touch wood).
Damn, it sucks to pay them $25 when you pay full price for your phone. I am going to call them and at least try to grandfather me to $30 unlimited plan instead of this 2MB plan as it should help when I grab a Huawei S7 Android Tablet or similar device.

are you sure it's 2MB instead of 2GB? that could be used up in no time.

lol I wasn't aware of a 2MB plan..what can you do with that? send 3 emails a month?

Can you let me know if you're able to grandfather your $30 plan? I just got billed the 2gb plan too.

I also got the text this morning. Sucks. I purposefully bought the x10 in may because I had heard the nexus one was recognized by att and required the smartphone plan. Going to put my sim back in the old nokia n95 and try to switch it back to the 10 family data plan. The only reason I buy unlocked phones is because of the cheaper data plan. If I was going to pay for the full smartphone plan, I would just get a subsidized phone from them for cheap. The smartphone plan is 2gb btw, not 2mb. From my usage, 2gb would be plenty, do you guys actually use more than 2gb a month?

This sucks... anyone have any success with contacting AT&T to switch back?

I just finished talking to AT&T. I switched my SIM card to my old W810i and told them I didnt have a smartphone. They are trying to switch me back to my original $15 Unlimited Data for Non-Smartphone plan. Looks like i'm going to have to buy another phone...
Any ideas? Switch back to X1 or X2? :/

i have theyre 30 dollar plan, which is unlimited text and data and i didnt get the text today

I got the same text this morning. Planning to call in later today to try to be grandfathered into the unlimited plan, then I fully intend to soak up a lot of data. It's complete bs that we need to pay for the extremely overpriced data plan when we didn't receive any subsidy from them. I don't care what they spew out about them doing us a fair by giving us enough data so we don't get overcharged. It's the same internet we've been receiving from them and it's been that way for years.

Lol guys you pay 25$ for 2 gb ?
In my country i pay 25$ for 6 gb lol
Lucky me

When you call them can you also ask them whether they detected you by IMEI or your total usage, because I am also using the x10a on AT&T but has no data plan and have yet to receive the text message. Thanks

when I went to asia I paid $1.50 for 2gb
I received the text for the smartphone data plan today too. I guess the rumors of the x10 going to at&t are true. What's a good data counter app for the x10/android besides the at&t one? I want a widget of some sort.
I may be getting rid of my x10 now. I've always wanted to try an n900 or even e72 and may end up doing so. Was going to get an ipod touch in september for media anyway. Not sure what to do. No point in buying unlocked for me if I can't use medianet (even though technically we are supposed to use the data plan anyway), even though I also buy unlocked just so I can switch phones often. When they finally remove medianet for good, then I'll get sucked in to their data capped plans. Until then, the war continues.

I used to work for att as a csr so ill throw in my two cents.
Whether they can match your imei to a specific model is unimportant. The system has a way of flagging people using smartphones. From what I understand you get flagged when your phone tries to access the data network with an incorrect or non existant feature. So if you have no data plan don't access ur data through the network and you won't get flagged. If u have one of the non smartphone data plans u are gonna get flagged sooner or later.
PS if u get the text saying u have been put on a data plan call them and tell them u were only trying your friends phone. Get a non smartphone imei ready and they should be able to remove it.
Hope this helps

Guys why all the grumbling over $30, I'm with vodafone in the UK and my mobile price plan is for calls and data. I pay £30 GBP which is about $40-45 USD, for that I get 600 minutes of calls, 500 sms & 1gb of data. Yes 1gb and that's only a recent change because smartphones becoming so popular, when I started my contact in April I only got 500mb and went over that the first two months.
Do you guys get calls included in your plans? Not sure how it works in the US & Canada?
I wish I could get 2gb for $30 which is about £20 GBP but that's dependent on included call time.

Oops about the 2MB plan. Talked to AT&T CSR and they won't let me grandfather to $30 plan as I was on $15 unlimited dumb phone plan. So, I am sC*W#*@*. Hope I don't exceep 2GB. Started to enable WiFi and also checked the notify option for WiFi Networks.
I because of the crazy data use by iPhone users AT&T is making everyone suffer with these stupid limited data plans as I now need to monitor my use.

I was told I was detected by my data usage. So, I am wondering even if I go back to something like W995a, I still would probably chewing in lot of data but these days I got too depended on Google maps to check out restaurant reviews, etc. I was told the $15 unlimited data plan will exist if I ever get another dumb phone.

In canada we pay 30$ for 1gb. I would gladly pay that for 2gb.

I just got off the phone with at&t ccr, and after a lot of persistence, it seems at&t is really getting the x10, or at least something from sony that fed them am imei list.
Also I have some good news.
After opening a ticket and talking to two separate reps (one from the regular customer care and one from the business dept), both seem to believe that an elevated team will be able to change my plan to the smartphone unlimited data.
To those who tried and were unsuccessful, I would try again. Having the right rep really means a lot in these kinds of situations.

AT&T Pure owners: Did you have a data plan added to your account?

So I'm curioous how this new data plan requirement works. Is there anyone out there who didn't have a $30 data plan when they got the Pure, and still doesn't have a $30 data plan?
If you had a $30 data plan added when you bought the Pure, was it added automatically by the system when you stuck your SIM in, or did the sales rep add it?
If you did not have a $30 data plan before you bought it, and the rep didn't add it, can you check the Online Account Manager and see if the Pure shows up but your data plan is still not the $30 plan?
Prior to purchasing the HTC Pure I had the unlimited family data plan for $10.00. I purchased the Pure at full retail price, as I was waiting to see if At&t would come out with some new devices before the end o f the year. As of today my data plan has not changed. The retail clerk did not offer or suggest or state that I was required to change my plan at the time of purchase. So I still have the $10.00 unlimited family data plan on my account.
I used my upgrade to buy the Pure so I was required to get the $30 data plan. Before I was still using an old 2125 (aka htc tornado). The unlimited plan for that was only $15 per month.
The data plan requirement is supposedly based on the device you are using, but when you buy a phone they only check your account if you are getting the upgrade discount for the phone.
If you buy the phone without the contract then that would explain why your data plan hasn't changed.
For those of you with ATT you may be able to pay less for data like I do on T-Mo. Not sure what the equivilant Data plan to the $9.99Web2Go(formerly T-MoWeb $5.99) is but I get full web capability off of it with my unlocked phones. If I log onto My-Tmobile online and I put my phone as a WinMo phone My T-mo Web (GrandFathered in @ $5.99 ) goes away and I have to choose one of the $20+ Plans. So what I do is choos a low end phone as my device and I have the option of using my T-Mo web service. (Unlimited Data Baby)
This may work for ATT. I'm not familiar with ATTs site so I can't give direct directions for this but mebe you can do it. After doing it go to settings>all Settings> Connection and connection setup and your phone will automatically configure the settings. You probably wont even have to reconfigure the settingd. But you will have to be carful on what you DL because the low end data plans now have caps on them so you can only DL so much.

Well I don't have the phone. I am just trying to confirm that if I buy a Touch Pro 2 no commit my data plan will or will not automatically change. I figured there must be someone out there who bought a Pure that can confirm this once and for all- one way or the other.
I'm waiting on the Pure which I ordered online on attwireless. I bought it retail, no commitment and didnt't change my current plan. I will be adding the $15 data on the line I will be using the Pure. I currently have an unbranded phone on that line and can add any feature myself on their website. Something tells me that I'll get by.

Nice. good to see that AT&T has a way to bypass the expensive plan like tmobile. Not many peolp know they can change plan options online.
Well we're all hoping that the "back door" way to use a $15 data plan works. But AT&T has been saying your plan will automatically get a $30 data plan added to it when you put your SIM card into any AT&T branded smartphone.
That's why I started this thread- to find out if they were bluffing or if they are serious.

I give you an example. I gave my 3GS to my wife and she had the first generation iphone with the $20 data plus messaging and they're yet to figure out that she's using the 3GS with a cheaper plan.

Intresting. I know T-mobile can see what phone I have (Topaz) and that it's not Branded. But if ATT automatically switches your plan with what phone you have that is total BS. Unlocked or Branded it shouldn't matter. It's non of their buisness.

That's cool. They only say you need the high data plan to use all the phone features so they can make extra money. They could sell the phone without the data plan if they wanted and leave it as a side option.
AT&T finds out quickly what phone you use. I changed my sim from my unlocked Tilt to a Sony W580i, received 2 calls, made none, loged in to my AT&T account & there it appears my phone as a Sony W580i.
How do they find out& is there a way to get them from finding out?

Nope. They find out from the SIM card. It tells them which phone it's inserted in. Whenever I call Customer support for T-mobile they know I have an unlocked phone. They don't care. Not sure if AT&T cares. But on T-mobiles website I have the option of choosing which phone I'm "using" on my account. It doesn't automatically choose it for me unless I put my sim in a T-mo Branded phone.
I have been with AT&T for >7 years now. For the last 4 years or so, I've had a MediaNet plan that's $20 for All-you-can-eat data and 200 text messages. I've had 4 phones since then, 3 of which have been smartphones. I just checked my plan a minute ago, and it's still the same one.
There is an inertia built into the system. Unless someone goes in and specifically changes codes, they stay there forever. I'm still getting a company discount for a company I haven't worked for in over 2 years. Whatever codes you have in place will stay there. They know what phone you have because of the SIM card, but that has no effect on the codes.
The exception is the iPhone.
I have the $25 unlimited data plan that has 200 messages and unlimited "in-network" messaging (SMS and MMS).
AT&T is sending me a Pure as a warranty replacement when their 4 broken Fuzes didn't work. They never said anything about automatically upgrading my account.
We also upgraded my wife's old a$$ samsung Blackjack to the new Samsung Jack because it is supposed to get a WM6.5 upgrade soon. The guy said the upgrade was supposed to require a data plan. I just said she doesn't use data just likes the keyboard for SMSing... he quick to move on. No problem at all.
I think it's stupid that they even had 2 different data plans based off what phone you have. Total crap. They tell me that my phone is "too fast" for the cheaper data package and the internet can't keep up with it. lol.
AT&T is already expensive for their services. We pay like $140 for 2 freakin' phones; 1 with unlimited SMS and mine with Data. Outrageous. We almost pay more for the 2 addons then we do our actual voice plan.

Holy wow that's expensive. I pay $56 a month with taxes with unlimited data and 1500 messages. My sis and mom are on a family plan and pay 80 some odd dollars with messages. (No data for them).
Crazy how 3 phones is nearly the same as 2.
I just bought a Pure for 49.99 as an upgrade and one condition was to add the 30 dlls Data Plan. Att they don't sell you the phone if you don't add the data plan, thats what I've been told for one of their representatives. I had a Tilt for the past 2 years paying only $15 dlls for unlimited data, on my account appeared the tilt but on their system showed a Nokia 6682 phone. They didn't make the change from Nokia 6682 to the Tilt I don't know why. I bought the Tilt two years ago over the internet on Black Friday. Now it shows the Pure but with the 30 dlls data plan added. One thing is for sure if att finds out that you are using a Smartphone they will add you the 30 dlls data plan automatically and may charge for past months.
How did you get them to sell it for 49.95?
I thought I'm paying a lot for my phones but yours is worst. I have the Tilt with Unlimited data+200 message, my wife has the iPhone 1st Gen and my son has a Samsung phone with unlimited msg (no data). My monthly bill is about $140.
Since I'm already on the $30 unlimited data plan on my Tilt, is there a way to switch back to the cheaper plan?

ATTN.T-Mobile US-Keep your android data plan!

This is just an FYI to everyone who swtched from an android device to the HD2. YOU CAN KEEP YOUR CHEAPER DATA PLAN! they will try to tell you that the smartphone data plan and the android data plan are specific to the device and that one will not work on the other, but that is just not true. My android plan is $24.99 unlimited data and 400 texts a month the smartphone data plan is $30 with no texts. so after getting text messaging it's $10 more expensive. I swtch from my G1 to my HD2 all the time and the data works on both. Call up the customer loyalty group people and demand your android data plan back! they will give it to you if you keep at it. they switched me to the more expensive data plan after specificly telling them not to, i think its just an automatic system adjustment when you buy an HD2. but it can be switched back and it DOES WORK! dont be fooled by the CSR's they dont know what they are talking about. Spread the word!
This applys to anyone like me who has an old and cheap family plan and obviously not people with the unlimited everything plans
I'm set up the same way. Only issue is you will get some funky text messages for the vm notifications. Notifications on the wm phones still work, though.

I thought the same way, so I kept my Blackberry data plan for 25 dollars.
It didn't work properly. Internet was ok, but kept getting weird mms or email issues. changed to the 'proper' 30 dollar plan after 4 days, and I don't have that issue anymore.
As for how or why that happens, I don't know.

I haven't noticed any text messages for the vm notifications. I do have visual vm working on the HD2.
I wasn't actually aware of the price difference between the 2 data plans.
I actually switched back to Android data plan so I could try something on my HTC Dream and since the HD2 works as well... no reason to switch back.
I thought tmo us only offers 2 kinds of data plan. first one is for blackberry users and it's called blackberry network. the second one is for any other smart phone users. it's called the android network. even hd2 is a wm phone, it uses the android network.
its not that bad of a deal considering you pay 30$ for data and 5$ extra for unlimited text
yeah it's not that bad its only $10 more, but everytime they have a new phone or OS they add a new data service that is a little more expensive. first it was the BB data which i believe started at $20 then the android $25 that includes texts, now they have the smartphone data plan $30 w/ no texts. To me it seems that if you can keep whatever grandfathered in data plan and phone plan for that matter it will always save you money. If you dont keep the charges where they are at they will nickel and dime you to death! the funny thing is that i doubt there is much of a change in the actual service it just has a new name and a new price tag to with it. once HSPDA is available in Kansas City where Im at I would gladly pay more, but i dont see a reason for charging more for the same service.
oh and also, I have had zero issues with the android data plan on my HD2. it works exactly the same as it did before when I had the new smartphone data plan and didnt know it. once I fiqured out they switched my data plan I immidiately switched back to the android plan. I have had no weird VM notification issues or anything.
good point
Heh I rem making a post about this too.

Data plan costs the same. but if they give me the smartphone one, G1 internet dies.. However.. otherway around.. works fine.
t-mobile getting pretty close to at&t now with their data plans.i pay extra $5 now for unlimited web and text before i had the $35 unlimited data and text.i always thought data plans prices would go down day by day but i was defenetly WRONG.wondering how much carriers gonna charge for 4G datas?
I am looking at the HD2, presently have the iPhone. I am with T-Mobile and have the non-contract family plan (4 phones.) I have 750 shared minutes, unlimited Text, Unlimited Internet (my phone only) and pay $100.92/month.
I talked to T-Mobile at 2 different locations and they tell me something different.
If I buy a 2 Year contract I can get the HD2 for $199.00, but must pay $24.95 or $30.00/month for the data plan. They say that I can keep my other 3 phones without a contract. That equates to $240 more a year. However, I cannot just keep my unlimited Internet @ $10/month. I must get a data plan.
They tell me that I will be changed from the Unlimited Internet $10 to the Data Plan automatically when I use my phone. The 2 year contract does not bother me as I have used T-Mobile for years and will continue to do so unless I find a better plan.
My questions are:
1. What is the advantage of buying the HD2 at $500 vs $200 as you still have to buy the Data Plan? Apparently the 2 year contract.
2. Why can't I just buy the HD2 and use my old SIM card and continue under the plan I have? Will they really worry about my current Internet plan and get me for the Data Plan?
3. Is the HD2 better than the iPhone overall? I am very impressed with the HD2 and from what I have seen via YouTube, it is very slick.
I know I will receive different opinions, however, that is what I am looking for. Have had the MDA, Wing, Omnia and iPhone.
I value your opinions as I have been on XDA for years and have received very valuable information and Help! Thanks in advance.

dont know the difference between the $10 data plan and the $30 data plan but all i know i've been using the iPHONE 3g since it came out on t-mobile offcourse jailbroken, never thought i would go back to windows mobile till the HD2 arrived and i gave my iPHONE to my sister for good and never looked back cuz im shocked by the experience on the HD2 since i became a member on the XDA.thanx to XDA i've tweaked the HD2 and loving it and looking forward to the end of this year for XDA to flash WM to ANDROID 2.1 on the HD2.as far on buying the HD2,i've already have a contract with t-mobile and i was do for an upgrade but instead of upgrade i bought the phone with 4 months installment plan which is about $112.50 a month on the bill(which is not bad) and i made sure that they didnt upgrade my contract.also added $5.99 for full insurance.so.......... so far loving the HD2 and its a keeper for me.hope it helps u a little.
@asctony if I were you I would try tobuy an unlocked hd2 and try to keep the $10 internet.but I would make sure it works first somehow, anyone here know? the csr will say it wont but I bet it will.if it works the price difference would pay for your phone in a relatively short amount of time.
Thank you both for taking the time to answer my query. Yes, I will try to use my $10 Internet Unlimited. When I signed up for the $10 Internet Unlimited CSR told me that I could not and it would not work. However, little do they know other than $$$$$$$$. Been using it for almost a year. I am really excited about the HD2 and will let you know what my opinion is. Thanks again.
Actually, you don't need to call customer care. Log into your mytmobile, change the phone in your profile to an Android phone and then add your data plan.
@asctony: if you buy it from the TMo retail store or a 3rd party that does not have rebates and does not require a data plan, then no, you don't have to change your data plan. Use your existing data plan by changing your APN (search my post about Nexus One and HD2).

it is not like a switch that you toggle right? because i am looking at it in my profile but since i have a grandfathered plan it says it conflicts with the current smartphone plan. maybe i am not looking in the right spot.
that's weird.... I switched my plan from android internet to the total internet for the HD2. both were the same price of $24.95. I'm here in NJ if that makes a difference
Yeah I had the $34.99 unlimited internet and texts for android. When I called customer service they switched me over to the smartphone plan and I'm still paying $34.99, don't know how that happened exactly but I'm happy!
No MMS
I've been with T-Mobile forever. I had a Blackberry before my Touch Pro 2. My Blackberry BIS add-on charge is $19.99/month. Internet is good and fast, phone and SMS work great. Cannot send or receive MMS and was told by customer support that, "your HTC sends MMS via the data plan and your current Blackberry data plan is not compatible with your phone."
My kids have cheap camera phones that send/receive MMS on our same family plan, but my more sophisticated WinMo device cannot? Sounds fishy, but I have searched every thread and tried every setting and finally have given up. I can live without MMS if it's going to cost me an extra $180/year.

yeah it's not that bad its only $10 more, but everytime they have a new phone or OS they add a new data service that is a little more expensive. first it was the BB data which i believe started at $20 then the android $25 that includes texts, now they have the smartphone data plan $30 w/ no texts. To me it seems that if you can keep whatever

Aria IMEI

I know it is a sensitive topic, but I'm so frustrated with ATT, and was wondering if I could get any directions from you guys.
I bought for my wife new Aria (full price) so she can collaborate with me without using her brain. Few days after the change I realized att changed her unlimited data plan to tiered one. That move really pissed me off, and I had to switch her back to old nokia to preserve unlimited plan. I used to have an iphone with this plan (unlimited data for $15/month), and it looks like they are enforcing new, more expensive plans not only on new customers, but also on existing ones.
Enough said... I would like to get some hints on changing imei, so I get to keep my old plan...
Thanks
Not 100% sure but just swap the sim and it should work. ATT are assholes for doing away with unlimited data made the mistake of losing my unlimited data plan when the iPhone 4 was released thanks iphone!

I upgraded to the aria And had the unlimited data plan transfered..if u just call customer service and tell them that u have been a loyal customer for a long time now and u should be able to keep the plan u have had..u should mention being grandfathered in, be polite and tell them if they can't help u then u might be looking at other carriers. U would be amazed at the things I have gotten for free or discounted by just calling and talking to customer service..if they say they can't do it ask to be transfered to to the person who can, u might be on the phone for a minute but u can get it done I promise u

Post this same info on ATT's Facebook.
Same thing happened to me, I went from an iPhone to the Aria, and had the unlimited data removed, put a post on ATT's facebook, and within the day, I was talking to a guy who gave it back, credited my account, and gave me an additonal discount, to make my bill cheaper.
Interesting... if that's what they did to you then I may actually get somewhere. I just pulled the plug on one line to get G2 from tmo, and may threaten to close another line if they refuse to keep my plan...
If it comes to sim swap then it won't work with att branded phones. The only thing that may work (it worked with my old line) is to use unlock phone and ask them to update imei. They will mark your line as unlocked phone and never update your plan again. It worked for iphone...
Thx for your input.

How much data do you actually use on your plan? I use my phone's data very regularly throughout the month and the most I've ever managed to use in a month was a gigabyte, making the $25 plan a cheaper solution than the $30 PDA Smartphone plan that preceded it.
I work in a retail position in which I handle AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile customers on a daily basis, and I have yet to meet anyone who uses more than 2GB a month, and some of these people use the phone as if they do not have a home internet service!
Thankfully AT&T has a very easy way of checking to see the monthly data usage you use, and even gives you a nice graph of the last six months of data usage, so you can decide for yourself what data plan is right for you.
"Unlimited" 3G data (w/ 5gb limit) for $30 on a smartphone is going the way of direct connect. Verizon will not be far behind with unveiling their new data plans and T-Mobile is talking about doing the same thing. I think once it is all said and done, we won't even see unlimited plans on 4G networks, especially once Sprint gets enough people back onto their service.
Just do the switch yourself. If you bought the phone full price you could have gotten it anywhere besides AT&T, swapped the SIM and been on the same plan. that's what i did coming from my Fuze. I just moved the SIM card to the new phone, and it worked flawlessly. kept my unlimited plan and everything.
as for data usage. When i had my Fuze i used maybe .5gig a month, but as soon as i got the Aria my usage spiked. I use consistently well over 2 gigs a month, breaking 4 gigs in August. I don't use it for tethering, i don't download huge video files, in fact i'm pretty tame with my phone usage. I'll be keeping my unlimited plan when i get a free upgrade in January.

You sound like att spokesperson addressing all dumbasses that purchased smartphone thinking it will make them look smarter. Your data usage statistics are off, and just because you ask your customers about their data usage, it doesn't mean it makes you right. I have observed the data usage by mobile devices in the enterprise I manage in the past 3 years. It seems people spend more time using internet driven apps when their experience improves. That pretty much means the faster mobile network becomes the more bandwidth is consumed. Another huge impact on data usage comes from pushed advertisement. People love free apps, but in order to support brightminded developers those apps have to display small banners. lets do quick math here... each banner is about 5KB. Popular apps rotate them in intervals of 10s, or display new ad whenever you go to new page. If your phone supports multitasking, for example new iphone, then if you don't close the app (for example weather app) it may actually keep rotating those ads in the background eating up your bandwidth. That's 5KB every 10s throughout billing cycle gives us total of about 1.3GB each month. That's based on single app that probably won't be running 24/7, but you may have few of such apps running at the same time, so this will definitely bring you close to that number.
Now, lets talk about 4G, and your assumption of all carriers going with tiered plans. I've been enjoying my G2 over HSPA+ so much. You tube videos are actually in visible quality now. Those very same videos over att 3g were just a joke, and waste of time. What do you think how much bandwidth those HQ videos consume? How about video calls? How about flash driven apps? Limiting users to tiered plans would mean blocking all those services, and worse it would bring technology development for mobile devices to a halt (at least in US).
Mobile carriers are facing very hard times. There is more bandwidth demand than they estimated. ATT for example chose greed, and decided to oversubscribe their infrastructure hoping iphone will save them. Verizon however, invested in their network to ensure they can handle the growth. They all should be thankful to Apple for stealing the name "smartphone", and introducing it to masses in the form of a dumbphone. That move changed the industry, and right now we're all paying for it through higher cost, development by spending more time rooting devices than coding new apps, and reliability. I love my mac, but I hate Jobs for the iphone so much...

Aria is the only woman friendly (small) android phone that supports att 3G. I paid for it $300 (new). Legacy, which seems to be pretty much same phone is $200 more, and doesn't support att 3g frequencies. It looks like att is getting better in cat/mouse game. I may just have to threaten to leave, to get something done...
BTW
any android phone is concidered by att as smartphone, and they require smartphone plan with it. My wife previously had unlocked nokia, so they did not know what kind of phone it was, and allowed regular $15/month unlimited data plan. Once you put your sim into device that they have in their database they enforce on you smartphone plan that's currently available. If her previous plan was unlimited data for smartphone ($25/month), then I agree, she would be able to keep it.

didn't realize you came from a non-smartphone. I came from a Fuze (touch pro), so i was already on the $30 unlimited smartphone plan. I made the phone switch right after they announced the end of unlimited plans, and just swapped the phone on my own. Their system caught it, changed my profile on AT&T's site, but did nothing to the plan. I still have the unlimited plan, and will be keeping it as i foresee my usage staying hight.
Do what i did.
Change the sim into a dumb phone and turn it on, wait about an hour, then log into your account online. The options for the medianet packages will reappear. Remove the smartphone data plans then enable the medianet plan for unlimited data. After switch the sim back to the smart phone, if you get a text or email saying they detected your smartphone just call them up and tell them you do not have a smartphone and give them the IMEI number of the dumb phone and have them remove the data and restore the medianet.
I know its a bit much to lie to them but it is robery that pay as you go data is $2 per 1MB, $15 for 200MB and $25 for 2GB when the service sucks inside any building in lower Manhattan.

Going back to my initial request... Any hints on changing imei?
Thanks
Is it doable at all?
I don't want to waste anymore time on it. Can some of the bright ones just tell me, if imei on this phone is "burned-in" or is it changeable via software?
Thanks
So... I've done more research, and seems people are saying it is illegal to change imei... Illegal???? I think, if changing/spoofing for criminal activities then it is illegal. Carriers clearly abuse that id to rip more money from people. Where is the government to protect us? I wouldn’t mind, if there was an alternative, but there is none. How come I pay full price for the smartphone, and can’t deny data plan? I want to roam through local hot spots offered for free by my cable provider to sync phone instead of X fuc…ing G!!!! I think it is time for people to start filing complaints with FCC...

First off AT&T can see immediately when you switch, and to what phone you are using, as well as the kind of traffic, to categorize your phone... so spoofing an IMEI won't get you anywhere - the bandwidth usage from a regular phone vs a smartphone is miles apart.
Second and more importantly Unlimited data for smartphones ($30) vs unlimited data for a regular phone ($15) are two completely different plans. Your old nokia was clearly not a smartphone if you were paying $15 for unlimited data.
I had a blackberry 9700 and went to an Aria, smartphone to smartphone. They let me keep my same smartphone unlimited data plan.
Bottom line you can't switch from a regular phone unlimited data to a smartphone unlimited data plan and keep the same plan.
You're SOL.
Your best bet is to talk to a manager in a retail store - as they are the only people who can work miracles. AT&T grants them special privileges, like allowing you to "early upgrade" (essentially re-start your contract) for a fee + regular advertised phone prices (way cheaper then a new phone at full retail price), and then allowing you to spend that "fee" as a credit on retail store accessories.

I'm afraid you're wrong, and this is why. I've had iphone 3gs on unlimited data plan ($15/month) for over a year. Before that I had Nokia N95 (which is still much smarter than iphone 4) on the same plan also for about a year.
You're saying they monitor bandwidth usage... How come they never picked up on my international SIP calls, and radio streaming? and yes, spoofing will get me somewhere. ATT holds only imeis from att branded/approved phones. If my imei is not found they assume it is simple multimedia phone. How do I know that? I talked to cancellation dept manager two days ago, and was ensured I will get my plan back once my imei doesn't match any of those from att smartphone lineup.

So what you are telling me is that basically, you want people on here to help you do something which is admittedly illegal in many counties, so your new smart phone appears as a multimedia phone and you can pay less and keep your unlimited data plan.
*scratches head*
edit: you would have been better off just getting an Aria for free with a 2yr contract and then paying for a 2G plan.

Well, not exactly. I've had that plan since gen 1 iphone, which was running on Edge, and three months later I switched to n95 3g. Basically I'm trying to retain my old data plan, and that's because I have not received any special treatment, or services in order to pay more... If they rolled out LTE, and use that for justification then I would agree.

Better off????? 2 year contract means locked in with old technology. Those contracts don't do any good to people. By signing, you let att screw you any way they want. You can't walk away, or negotiate. If I wasn't tied up with the contract when att announced new plans, then I would switch to verizon long time ago... If you are real smartphone user then you better off buying unlocked phone, and use it the way it was designed to use without extra fees (tethering $60 ), but if you are one of those guys thinking "smartphone will make me look smarter", then your best bet is to buy discounted phone with the contract.

Yes, but on the Even More Plus, you are not under contract and pay FULL price for your phone.
If you are still under contract you will pay the Early Termination Fee.
Why throw in something that's only relevant to 1 or 2 people? Most of us are under contract.

If you've been with T-Mobile long enough, i'd say like 2+ years... you can ask them to put you on the Even More plus plans..... they ARE getting rid of these plans as it turns out they are not as profitable as they thought they would be.
I personally think thats the best deal around $60 for all that is unbeatable.
Also, if you have a good credit you put the G2 on Interest-free installments.... I paid $250 down and the rest $250 will be added as $25/month on the my bill each month until I finish out the remaining balance.

Honestly, it doesn't take much to get T-Mobile to lower down your prices. You just have to call retentions and make them budge.
I have two friends that JUST switched to T-Mobile from Verizon about two weeks ago. They got the Even More 750 minutes Family Talk and Text Plan for $79.99, and to one of the lines added a $30 Unlimited Android Data Plan and to the other line a $10 Unlimited Feature Phone Data Plan. So in total, their bill came out $120/month.
What I told them to do the very next day is call T-Mobile retentions and tell them that Verizon came calling back with an offer that they couldn't refuse, and since they were in the 14-day trial period, they could leave T-Mobile without having to pay any contract cancellation fee. T-Mobile is not about to let someone walk away. That is just not good business. So they made a counter offer that they couldn't refuse that looked like this:
Even More 750 minutes Family Talk Plan for $59.99/month
Unlimited Text Messaging for $15/month
Preferred Android Unlimited Data Plan for $20/month
Preferred Feature Phone Unlimited Data Plan for $5/month
10% Off Entire Phone Bill every Month through University Affiliation
2 Months Free of Data Charges
That comes out to $90/month, not even including those two free months of data charges. That's a ridiculously good price if you ask me. So next time you call T-Mobile, push them a little. They'll cave eventually.

Planning to leave Verizon (and Incredible)...

After 7+ years as a loyal Verizon customer, and 2+ years as a fanatical Incredible user, I'm leaning strongly towards leaving it all behind. The straw was the recent change to mandatory Shared Data plans. I just can't justify spending $30+ more per month when I upgrade for essentially the same service I am getting now. I understand why Verizon needed to make a change...but it's just too much for me.
I've been eyeing the GNex for a while, and with the continued disappointing turnout of HTC on Verizon (Inc 4G...really? Small screen, no ImageSense), I am planning to get the $350 unlocked, GNex direct from Google and then sign up with a month-to-month plan with a GSM provider.
Sad to see it all go, but also excited with the new possibilities.
If anyone else is mulling this conundrum, I found this thread to be very helpful...

I'm not happy with that either but to my understanding the shared data is an option not a requirement. I believe the tiered plan will still be an option.

Im up for my upgrade so i went on the vzw site logged in, went to upgrade device, picked a phone and went to the plan portion and there is only the one, 40 per phone 50 for 1gb shared data. No option to keep my current plan unless i buy the phone for retail with no contract. I am just going to save up my cash and when the inc dies, buy a phone retail or off amazon or ebay or something. That way i keep my 60 dollar a month bill with the unlimited data plan forever. I dont do a lot of talking or texting so the whole unlimited deal dosent really seem like a deal to me. And 50 for 1gb, thats just outrageous.
I know losing unlimited sucks, but I voluntarily gave it up. The shared plan gives me unlimited talk time, and 4gb a month between my girlfriend and I. We only averaged around 1.5-1.75gb per month each anyways and now that I figured out my employers network password I'm on their wifi at work lol. Saving $40 a month and gaining unlimited talk time was well worth it for me.
That said, I'm still considering leaving Verizon. Their service has been exceptionally poor in my area lately. My friend at work is on sprint and using speedtest his 3g speeds are consistently much greater than mine. But I don't know if I want to keep my Inc until January 2013.

I plan on doing the same thing when the new iPhone (yes, sorry) comes out in Sept/Oct. I've been a Verizon Wireless customer since I was 16, and would end up paying about $20 more a month on their new plan as well. Verizon has good coverage where I am, so I'll either buy it unsubsidized and keep my unlimited data, or switch to a GSM month to month provider.

The Shared Data plans work great if you have someone to share it with. Engadget, Android Central, et al have done the analysis and these are good deals for groups of 3 or 4 people who use less than 4GB together...for individuals like me it's a really bad deal. I would basically pay $30-40 more for a capped data plan.
I've thought about getting a retail price phone...you can get an Inc 2 on ebay now for $250-350. But then I wonder, why settle for an old phone, when, for the same price, I can get a brand new, unlocked GNex and be free of all this. Coverage is a concern. Support is a concern. Verizon has been fantastic for me on both. But I live in DC and friends with AT&T and T-Mobile are happy with their coverage.
Still haven't decided...but I appreciate everyone's thoughts and feedback. The Incredible dev community has been just that....another reason I'm looking at the GNex...gotta follow the devs.
Yeah dude I'm considering a nexus for my daily driver. I'm already on tmobile and pay $15-30 a month. They have a $30/month prepaid plan, 100 voice minutes, unlimited texts, and unlimited data (first 4 or 5gbs at hpsa+ speeds). Beats any Verizon plan for a single user. Only thing is you have to have T-Mobile coverage in your area. I get better coverage on T-Mobile than Verizon in some places where I live

Big Red's BS is the reason I left and went PP years ago.
It has worked out very well.

I was not lucky enough to upgrade before 6/28 and now im stuck on this angry little boat. I swear to god I'll be the last mofo on 3g. I'm the only one on my plan. Data tiers are complete bull****. A complete rip off the consumer.

My wife just left sprint because of crappy service and support, and went to straight talk. $43 a month with tax, unlimited talk text and data, and here service is excelent. It even comes in at the beach where vzw has no service. But straight talks best android phone is still junk. If i could get my inc or another newer better android phone flashed to straight talk, i would leave big red in a heartbeat.
Woh im only use Rp 45.000 or 5$ per month for my Dinc for unlimited data plan. it's cheap and enough for social media and download apps..

I tried straight talk and was not happy you could not bring your own device and that the data was throttled back,
With page plus its the same network , you can bring your own device and the data is throttled back.
I have had good coverage when I travel.
Just ran the numbers for all the lines on our plan and it is better for us to stay with what we have now. If we do upgrade we will go retail or upgrade and opt for the 2GB non-shared data at 29.99 It will keep our price the exact same and the lines that have unlimited can keep it. It also makes it 10 dollars cheaper for us to do 3 lines with 2GB data than shared 6GB data. I totally get the new plans and such, but it suck to only be one phone on the plan.
If we didn't live in the middle of nowhere we might change, but VZW offers the best service for us.

So you can get a non shared data plan? When i went on the vzw site to do an upgrade, it only gave me the shared data option starting at $50 for a gb.

Have you tried calling VZW customer service? I went into my local store last week and asked the gal at the counter what I needed to do for my stbxw will be getting off my account and getting her own account. She said in my case that she made a note in the computer allowing her to take her phone/phone number off my account. But once she did that, then I needed to call customer service for them to change my family share plan to something else, because they no longer sell a unlimited data plan so customer service would have to make my account a single tiered account so I don't get cornered into a share everything plan and lose my unlimited.

That is my understanding from the rep I spoke with on the phone on Thursday. I was told the 2GB plan would still be around for any line I would want to put it on. I think it would for sure be something you would need to call in about b/c I don't see it listed under online options.
i had the incredible, went through a bunch of phones, lost some money, but ended up on a nexus with unlimited data. now that i only have ~9 months left on contract, im thinking of going to tmobiles $70 a month unlimited everything. its more then i get now, for a lot less. if you guys are in the market for used phones, try swappa.com. really good site. ive used them several times. nexuses can be had for $360
