Funny Moments at HTC... - Droid Eris Android Development

So one day at the HTC factory, two Developers of Universaly Mind Boggling Assanine System Software (aka D.U.M.B.A.S.S.) are adding the last touches to their current project... the HTC Eris.
Dumbass_001 looks over at his co-worker "hey man, you know what would be really funny?"
Dumbass_002 coughs and replies "no man, what?"
Dumbass_001 says "If you cpassed that joint before it was gone!", then snatches the J from Dumbass_002 "but seriously man this **** would be hilarious man..."
Dumbass_002 "what ?"
Dumbass_001 takes a hit, then coughs out "If we made the 'wake up' button the same as the 'end call' button"
Dumbass_002 damn near kills himself trying to take a hit while already laughing "No, man, we should do that, AND make the screen dim before the display shuts off!"
Dumbass_001 "holy crap, your right! Then they will think the display has shut off for sure and hang up haha"
Dumbass_002 "bro thee only way this would be any funnier... is if we could find a way to randomly shut off all the phones audio!"
But seriously...
Do any of these roms NOT use the damned end call key to wake up the phone?

I have ended at least 20 calls in 5 months this way. No way around it.
There are programs in market to wake up the screen in other ways, like shaking the phone. I haven't tried them on our phone yet, but I'd bet they work.

dee dee dee
i thought i was one of the only ones. i would like to chuck my droid at the tard that decided that was a good idea! it would be nice if the trackball woke up the phone.

Don't know if it's ROM based, but you can also use the "send" key to wake up...

Try blocking and unblocking the proximity sensor. Works for me.

why would the send key be easier to hit?

Use the volume up or down button to wake the screen back up as needed.

i find it takes more to hit the hard keys rather than the trackball... especially if its in a pocket, but totally an individual prefrence.i run around alot, with phone in pocket and have made alot of inproper pocketcalls with other phones.... with having the droid, ive had none. so, i thank the hardkeys but having mutilple options for everything shouuld be what rom making is and i hope to see the option for more hotkeys and more theme control like such.

I have used both Fresh 2.1.1 and Eris Lightning Cyanogen 2.4 and both wake up upon pressing the "send" key.

+1. This is how I do it too. This works on stock and on any rooted ROM where the proximity sensor is not broken.

want opening 8525 keyboard to turn on phone

I have a new 8525. When you slide out the keyboard it is amazing to me that it doesn't turn on the unit. Is there a hack for this? Thanks Bill
You have to push 1 button. Push it. Not hard.
Not hard, but sometimes I am unsure if I hit the correct button, and hit it hard enough. Sometimes there can be a delay, too. So, I hit the button... nothing... hit it again... watch it glow and then dark!
Argh!
I, for a second, would LOVE a hack to have it turn on when opened.
zeddock
That would be pretty cool... but i can live without it....
Would be great for texting..
And I dont think its possible. The only thing that happens when it's opened is a small magnet is activated. I bet that the electrical current to that magnet is not even on while the phone is off/sleep. would be cool tho
Might to cool but it is just one button which is pretty easy.

Actually, it is not pretty easy on the 8525. When the KB slides open it is hard to hit the power button.

Soft "End call" button drops calls constantly

I've been testing this a little now and I am sure that I am presing the "End call" button with my face and dropping calls more now than ever. Maybe it's more sensitive in the new ROM's? Or the light sensor is less sensitive?
Is there a way to get rid of this button or disable it?
I am running DC 2.07.2 with the new radio and PRL 60663.
I was getting that too with DC 2.06. From what I could figure it would be caused by hanging up on the person with the soft end button and not the hard key. That is what I could gather out of the few times that it happened to me.
when you make a call, pull your taskbar down.
thats how i test if its me or the ROM.
Haha, I tried that... but my face pushed "call in progress" and brought me back to the call screen.
Maybe a themer could remove the "end call" button from that screen?
I am really having an issue here. Can anyone suggest a way to disable the soft button?
Download "proximity sensor" from the market.
After you make or answer a call, press the home button to go back to the home screen

Well, we don't really have a proximity sensor. BUT you can download the proximity sensor app from the market and that pretty much locks the phone while its in a call. That would be the only thing I can think of.
It does FC when you end a call on the Hero - but it doesn't disable the app, it gets the job done.

I haven't had a problem with Proximity Sensor FC'ing in 2.1. Calls going through at all… Now, that's a problem!
Well, I tried it and it doesn't work at all. Nothing I do makes it go into lock mode.... is my light sensor broken? And could this be from the ROM?

Could very well be broken from the rom, I haven't tried it in a couple of months. I'll see if I can make it work tonight. I wonder if its open source.

If it's possible to re-map the hard button, isn't it possible to remap or break the soft one?
I'd rather keep my hard end button the way it is and disable or re-map the soft one.
Can anyone help? Would a donation move things along?

Sigh........
Well, I had been using Regaw's suggestion of holding down menu and bringing up the keyboard during calls. It was working perfectly as a screen "shield" until a few days ago when it started pushing the screen up instead of covering it. It's so weird, it just randomly started doing that, so I actually am more likely to press the end button with that method now....
I guess I am going to have to get that overbloated "Screen Suite" program to stop this crap, since removing or disabling the soft "End call" button on the call screen does not seem like something that anyone here is capable of doing...
Just updated my wife's Moment yesterday to the leaked 2.1. Her biggest complaint about the phone was that she constantly muted or hung up on other people with either her hair, earring or cheek. Once updated I tried a test called and I couldn't believe that this issue was actually fixed! The mute/end call button now looks just like the vanilla unlock and can't be that easily activated. Not sure if that can be ported over to Hero but it would definitely be great to have.
Maybe just stop mashing the phone hard against your face?
I've never had a problem with this.
^Well, if you've never had a problem, then I don't know why I'm even posting here! Should have asked you first, apparently.
I know plenty of people who have this problem. It sucks.

Power Button!!!

Hello all,
I have not rooted my phone as of yet but plan on doing it. I used to have a G1 and moved to the slide. The biggest problem I have is I like to keep my phone in my pocket at work, but have to have the phone off. If I barely tap the phone's power button it turns on and I end up either pulling the battery or putting my phone in my lunch bag (praying no one takes it).
Anyone know if it is possible to change the power button to need a long press to turn on instead of a short press? Alternatively moving the power button to the genius button would work too.
Any ideas?
Can't you just put your phone into silent mode? Airplane mode? Or turn off the mobile network.
Unfortunatly for me to be able to have my phone on me it has to be off. It is a government facility and its their rules. I may be outta luck but figured I'd ask the fine people here.
Thanks!
It can be done

I looked and in my keylayout directory, I have 3 *keypad.kl files, a Verion 0, 1, and 2... whats the deal on those?
Edit: Eh, doesn't really matter. None of them clearly had a "GENIUS" label. On was called SOFT RIGHT, which may or may not be it...
i was mainly looking into them last night, made bachups of course, tonight i will be playing with changing things and seeing if it works, i figure i will start be changing the A key in each version to something different(comma in one, period in another and something else in another) then we can see which version the phone is reading(i would think it would be v2 but idk) and then we can start remapping those buttons.
not sure how we would change power to require a long press though
May I advise a hard-case?
The idea is that it adds a layer around the phone, and this makes the power button indented. Protecting it from accidental hits.
1/8 of an inch makes all the diff.

So in the creation of this abnormal problem, do you do anything abnormal? For instance, are you poking around in your pockets? Does your Government job require any running and jumping where as to cause crushing of objects into your pocket? Can you carry the phone in an exclusive pocket? (i.e. just the phone, no keys, loose change, peanuts, hard candy, etc.) food for thought...

Nope, just an average guy sitting at a desk working with computers. I have nothing in the front left pocket of my pants other than lint and my phone normally. Thing is...the slide likes to slide around and all it takes is a tap of that power button. I wouldn't never know it was turning on if it wasn't for that annoying T-mobile sound (which I'll get rid of eventually if this problem is resolved).
I've also had the phone slide out of my pocket before and keeping it still in the car while listening to pandora can be interesting. I'll have to look for a good all-purpose case that could fix all these small annoyances I guess lol.
Didn't see it posted in here, but if you can boot into Clockwork Recovery using the update.zip in the root thread, under the Advanced menu, you can do a Key Test, and every key you press, it's key # is displayed. None shows up for the Genius button. This is probably because of what was mentioned before, being mapped by software, or something...

i know it isnt a solution to your problem, but if you power off the phone while in silent mode, it wont play the tmo sound when powering on the next time.
Not a solution, but it may keep you from being discovered if it does accidentally happen.

Not to sound like a smart ass but if you cant have it on when working then why keep it in your pocket? leave it in your car.
You maybe better off getting a case to keep the phone on your hip and out of your pocket. I personally don't like putting my phone in my pocket unless its a flip phone. I bought a case for cheap off of Ebay.

Side note, as there seem to be possible issues with dust collecting under the bottom of the screen glass, may not be the best idea to keep it in your pocket unprotected anyway.
Do what I did, buy a holster from T-mobile. I basically have to do the same thing as you but only in my budiling! (Government facility also) reason I don't leave it in the car is that I like to have my phone with me in case I need to make a phone call outside of the office.
The holster keeps you from acidentally pressing the power button and its comfortable on your hip and its convient.
I just keep mine in the cloth case that came with my G1...if you still have it its worth a shot...it keeps the button from being pressed...

What do you mean you get the feeling 'next time won't work' ? Does the key feel flimsy or something?
This would involve very serious Hacking of the Android Framework, which is not doable ATM

I agree with "thor2002ro" it's wil be fantastic to have "application" to simulate back button function with a touchscreen gesture ( and i think this button he should be visible always on the screen)

they mean to say - by the prolonged use of the back button, if, in the near future, it dosnt work anymore, then it will be really difficult to use the phone.
main problem hardware buttons can break down really fast..... even faster if SE cheaped out on the button hardware parts(hopping this is not the case...)
and i cant believe its that hard to call the back button function... or if we cant call the function we should be able to simulate a press from /dev....hopping the buttons are "mounted" there
Remember the good old days when phones only had hardware buttons... you could bang on them all day, and never worry about the idea that they might not work all of a sudden...
Now with a touch phone, it just seems that hardware buttons just seem breakable...
Don't get me wrong - I feel exactly the same way, but I just keep reminding myself of the good old days...
Also, try something like AppSwipe - you can close programs with a gesture...
Now is it just me here that thinks the home key is strong enough to last me for ever, but only has a bad feeling about the back key...?
ya but in the old days phones wore cheap and the hardware buttons wore not that good as you say .... i got an old htc vox and couple of buttons i have to bang them with a hammer for them to work .... and the vox isn't that old really 2007 if i remember correctly,
if something like that wore to happen to x10 it will be hell....
Sticking on the topic... I've been doing some tries with Tasker, it allows you tu make gestures based on accelerometers... you can close some programs, lunch some execs, go home... but i didn't see any action for go back....
The back and menu buttons do feel a little fragile and it doesn't help that my first X10's menu button was a little sunken in and spongy.
The button still worked and I pressed it obsessively about 1 million times and it didn't get any worse, but it was a little annoying.
The replacement I got is a lot better but i'm always weary pressing it.
The home/middle button feels solid though.
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general
...and maybe later to t&a
i was hopping a dev will help us

[Q] How do you hang up?

Hi,
I have a i5800 which I have updated with froyo.
I'm pretty pleased with the operation of the phone, with 2 exceptions.
Firstly, the audio seems to skip in voice calls, which makes it hard to comprehend the other person. I figure this may be because there isn't an official froyo yet, so I hope itll be resolved if the official firmware ever comes out.
Secondly, I just can't believe how awkward it is to hang up a voice call. When the screen is on. There is a button, but usually the screen has blocked during the call, so it needs to be swiped first.
So, does anyone have a more convenient way?
Can you stop the screen turning off/locking during voice calls, or can you assign a physical button to hang up?
Any advice would be appreciated.
which version did you flashed? in firmware I5800BOJP6 works everything good try to flash this version
I usually say "Alright, bye."
*Rimshot*
Now as the laughing has faded away we can get to the point. I know how you feel. I hate same things about my phone.
Go to Settings -> Accesibility and press cancel. Then check 'The power key ends call'
It will not turn the screen off. That's what I use.

I use this as well. It's the best way to end a call. I felt the same way trying to hang up calls before. So I used to give up, say bye and put it in my pocket hoping they hung up soon.
That's a good idea, but when I go there on the settings it's greyed out, and says I need to install accessibility application, checked market and cannot find. Where do I get this application?
Odd. What rom are you using?
