Power Button!!! - myTouch 3G Slide General

Hello all,
I have not rooted my phone as of yet but plan on doing it. I used to have a G1 and moved to the slide. The biggest problem I have is I like to keep my phone in my pocket at work, but have to have the phone off. If I barely tap the phone's power button it turns on and I end up either pulling the battery or putting my phone in my lunch bag (praying no one takes it).
Anyone know if it is possible to change the power button to need a long press to turn on instead of a short press? Alternatively moving the power button to the genius button would work too.
Any ideas?

Can't you just put your phone into silent mode? Airplane mode? Or turn off the mobile network.

Unfortunatly for me to be able to have my phone on me it has to be off. It is a government facility and its their rules. I may be outta luck but figured I'd ask the fine people here.
Thanks!

It can be done

I looked and in my keylayout directory, I have 3 *keypad.kl files, a Verion 0, 1, and 2... whats the deal on those?
Edit: Eh, doesn't really matter. None of them clearly had a "GENIUS" label. On was called SOFT RIGHT, which may or may not be it...

i was mainly looking into them last night, made bachups of course, tonight i will be playing with changing things and seeing if it works, i figure i will start be changing the A key in each version to something different(comma in one, period in another and something else in another) then we can see which version the phone is reading(i would think it would be v2 but idk) and then we can start remapping those buttons.
not sure how we would change power to require a long press though

May I advise a hard-case?
The idea is that it adds a layer around the phone, and this makes the power button indented. Protecting it from accidental hits.
1/8 of an inch makes all the diff.

So in the creation of this abnormal problem, do you do anything abnormal? For instance, are you poking around in your pockets? Does your Government job require any running and jumping where as to cause crushing of objects into your pocket? Can you carry the phone in an exclusive pocket? (i.e. just the phone, no keys, loose change, peanuts, hard candy, etc.) food for thought...

Nope, just an average guy sitting at a desk working with computers. I have nothing in the front left pocket of my pants other than lint and my phone normally. Thing is...the slide likes to slide around and all it takes is a tap of that power button. I wouldn't never know it was turning on if it wasn't for that annoying T-mobile sound (which I'll get rid of eventually if this problem is resolved).
I've also had the phone slide out of my pocket before and keeping it still in the car while listening to pandora can be interesting. I'll have to look for a good all-purpose case that could fix all these small annoyances I guess lol.

Didn't see it posted in here, but if you can boot into Clockwork Recovery using the update.zip in the root thread, under the Advanced menu, you can do a Key Test, and every key you press, it's key # is displayed. None shows up for the Genius button. This is probably because of what was mentioned before, being mapped by software, or something...

i know it isnt a solution to your problem, but if you power off the phone while in silent mode, it wont play the tmo sound when powering on the next time.
Not a solution, but it may keep you from being discovered if it does accidentally happen.

Not to sound like a smart ass but if you cant have it on when working then why keep it in your pocket? leave it in your car.

You maybe better off getting a case to keep the phone on your hip and out of your pocket. I personally don't like putting my phone in my pocket unless its a flip phone. I bought a case for cheap off of Ebay.

Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using Tapatalk

Side note, as there seem to be possible issues with dust collecting under the bottom of the screen glass, may not be the best idea to keep it in your pocket unprotected anyway.

Do what I did, buy a holster from T-mobile. I basically have to do the same thing as you but only in my budiling! (Government facility also) reason I don't leave it in the car is that I like to have my phone with me in case I need to make a phone call outside of the office.
The holster keeps you from acidentally pressing the power button and its comfortable on your hip and its convient.

I just keep mine in the cloth case that came with my G1...if you still have it its worth a shot...it keeps the button from being pressed...

Internet Explorer Annoyance

Hi Guy's
I am getting annoyed with Internet Explorer. It keeps opening when I recieve a call. As I end the call there is a pop up box asking if I want to connect. I allways say no and then close IE. Does anybody know how to stop IE doing this as it is a pain. I only want to open it when I want to go on the internet and not on almost every call.
TIA
this could be a dumb question, but are you accidentally pressing the IE button with your cheek when you make a call?
Maybe not such a dumb question, considering where the button is it is possible the when i put the phone to my ear it does touch my cheek without my noticeing it. I will experiment.
if it is the case is ther a way to dissable that button
TIA
I cannot imagine that is the case; you have to press the button pretty hard (on my device anyway); I think you would hurt your ear or at least hear the "click" if you happen to accidently pressing the device that hard to the ear.
Martin
believe it or not there have been multiple TyTN users that never noticed the top rocker button... and there have been more than a few complaints about IE and Mail starting in the middle of a conversation...
coincidence? Methinks not...
My TyT sometimes srarts up IE for no apparent reason... ummm... Holy Crap! That bar over the lights is a rocker button? Crap, I've been using this thing for over three weeks and never knew about it. Thought the drawn on icons were just to represent the lights (internet happens to be above the WiFi light). Wonder how I missed that, considering I have read the entire instruction booklet.
Hi Guy's
Well I have solved my problem with IE, as goestoeleven pointed out I could be pressing the "WnW" button by mistake. Well I had a call today which I did not put the phone to my face but used the speaker, yep it still did it.
The problem I found was not to me pressing the button on the phone but putting it into the case supplied with the phone. As you can see the buttons are slighly raised (this does not help).
Every time I put the phone into the case, because the lid has two strong magnets it slaps shut quite hard. This force causes the button to be pushed in and thereby starting IE. This tends to happen mainly if the screen is facing out.
I thought it was every time I answered a call that IE started but it was already on from the last time I put it in the holster.
To resolve this make sure the screen is facing inward so the magnets are on the back, this should reduce the impact.
But!!! I supposed if you have the phone on the holster and nock into something this cauld also trigger IE.
It would have been better if the button were recessed then it would not happen.
I hope this will solve this issue for some of you at least
P.S. This will might also answear the "Mail" starting on its own as the button is also on the same rocker although this has not happend to me...

End key button - press hard to register

Recently the end key button on my Titan has become a button that I need to press with a good amount of force on the very left or right side of it to have it work. I have ruled out a ROM problem (was using a prior DCD rom, now using 3.2.6) and I have never dropped my phone or had any extreme pressure/vibrations.
Has anyone else has this happen? The button still sounds like it clicks like all of the other buttons. Are there instructions out there for taking apart the Titan, or at least the front of it?

how do you carry your phone? My VZW case would press my down arrow in and that caused alot of issues with the arrow. might be your case just wearing it out. remember, you dont have to drop it to wear out the metal contact underneath the button.

I carry is in my right side pocket in my pants, without anything else in there (keys, etc). I've had it since January of this year and babied it pretty well so I'm just surprised that with normal usage the button would become that hard to press.
I guess my options are taking it apart to look or bringing it to Verizon.
i posted a similar thread about the End key not to long ago... I had to press it extra hard to get it to register, then it just finally stopped working... i then had to use the touch screen end button... I got tired of it, so i took it back to sprint and they replaced my Mogul for free (as of 10/27/08). i also had issue with my keyboard, which keep repeating certain letters and having to type very hard to make them work. I searched and found a zip-file program that fixed that issue... but if you cant find a solution to the End Key problem, take it back to the store and let them handle it.
The Titan keyfix cab has fixed many of our problems with the keyboard and hard keys. Worth a shot I guess...
was your phone insured to be replaced?

Buttons that wake up the phone

i`m currently playing and tweaking my 3 day old HD2. Shame I got one, now my Rhodium and Kaiser are oldish and forgotten =) What a wonderful device the HD2 is.
So far, I´ve managed to tweak all the things I wanted, except for one: in all other devices, I can access the system page and a "keylock" option there, so I can configure the device to wake up ony if the power button is pressed while locked. There is no keylock option in the HD2, and while in the pocket, buttons keep getting pressed and the screen is turning on. I want to reduce that to as few times as possible (since battery life seems to be a problem with the HD2).
Any ideas ? Guess they removed the keylock option simply because the HD2 does not have a power button... anyway, waking up the device with a specific key (only) would be nice.
tia
I'm looking for the same thing. Please advice!

Add me
to the list that would like this option. My HD2 is always being turned onin my pocket and its seriously reducing the bettery life!!!
ok... bump. My day ended up with a dead phone. The screen turned on so many times that the cellphone got warm... more than once.

... it does... and it works. Problem is not locking or remaining locked, but the fact that the screen turns on even locked.
I mean, if you lock the phone, there is only 1 way to unlock it (by sliding the unlock button on screen). But hitting *any* button (except for the volume) brings the display up. Since the buttons are elevated, it´s not that difficult to keep hitting the buttons while it is in your pocket.
The end result is that the screen remains lit, wasting battery. It would be nice if, once locked, only 1 single button would bring the screen on. That would reduce the chance of turning it on by accident.
With my Kaiser and Rhodium, both have a power button. Once the screen is locked, the only key that will bring it to life is the power button itself (that is somewhat difficult to hit by accident). But the Leo does not have a power button.
Would the leather case solve that? I know it's more impractical but if anything saves battery it would be worth it.

Unfortunately, no... In fact, the standard leather case (that came with it) is so tight that if you put the phone with the buttons first, they get pressed.

Yeah just tried, don't think it will loosen any more either. I guess you need a jacket pocket with plenty of space, a trouser/jean pocket would be fine until you sit down.
Well, didn´t find any app that would help me do this trick. In fact, a simple app that enable us to configure the key that wakes up the phone after locking, could solve the problem. Was thinking about changing to the volume down key (guess it is one of the hardest to accidentally press, like when in a pocket).
As a temporary measure, if you use the leather slip case it came with, put the phone in upside down so that the USB is pointing out the open end.
I've bought a leather executive flip case that stops accidental button pressing. But it's not everyone's cup of tea to make the phone bulkier in the pocket.
Any people can provide other solution like change the registry or make a simple software?

Bump - someone must know the answer - I hope!
Just to share my experience.
I never use the leather case. It is too tight to squeeze in. And the HD2 is not as fragile as the other models. However if you use a screen protector, then you may find that it is pretty easy to scratch and dent the screen protector, which is rather visibly annoying.
As for keylock, I think TouchLockPro is rather good. It can't stop the end button from waking up the phone. Nobody can, because it is the only method to wake up an HD2. However, you can set the phone to go back to sleep in say 5 seconds. Or you can keep it always locked when it is dark (in your bag or pocket).

[REQ] Trackpad Wake

Well one of my biggest complains by far has got to be reaching my finger all the way across to the top everytime I want to use the phone. On my G1, every single one of the buttons could turn it on, and I know that on the nexus there is a hack called "trackball wake" that does precisely this. Does anyone think that they might be able to port this over? Lol and while we're on the topic of remapping buttons, how about porting the CM long press on volume rocker to skip songs?
Sent from my G2
This type of thing really bothers me. You're seriously too lazy to reach up 3 inches to press the unlock button? Come on people, its a phone. Half the things on this forum are due to pure lazyness. No personal attack to you, just saying.
Other then that, no there's no app out at the moment. I'm sure cyanogen is working on it if its not done already. Probably waiting for perm root and custom recovery. Patience...

I sometimes just pop the keyboard out-and-in and the screen unlocks. Especially easy since my hinge is loose... ;-(

Maybe once the phone is rooted. Otherwise, we can only wish that HTC will pull their heads out of their asses and pay attention to some of the great features coming out of the ROM community.
So yeah, once the phone is rooted.
You know... I wouldnt mind having something like this. It'd be a little more convenient.
I wonder if Tasker can do something like this.
As long as it is configurable so I don't accidentally unlock the screen in my pocket and uselessly waste battery. I dunno my index finger is always sitting next to the power button when I am holding the phone, its not that hard.

Coming from BB....
in BB the track pad is king.....is is not about laziness...but depending on the situation....if I have it sitting on my desk it would be nice to just press the tp with a finger, as opposed to having to hold the phone with my hand in order to press the top button....
How is this a matter of laziness? Sure I can reach up there, but wouldn't it be much easier just to press the button? It's a matter of convenience, not laziness. Also, my case covers the power button.

It' not a matter of lazyness, it's that it's different from the way I'm used to doing things. The whole point of android is that you can customize it however you like. I mean, according to your thinking, using a bluetooth/wifi/brightness toggle widget makes me lazy since all those settings can already be changed manually? Really?
And I know there's nothing out yet to do what I want. If you check logcat though, every time you push a button on the device you can see the output on the computer. I was hoping a more talented coder than I could help me achieve what I wanted, or at least could point me in the right direction so that I can try to figure this out on my own. Do we really need perma-root for this? It would definately help out so that we don't have to reaply it everytime, but we could make a gscript or something similar with what we have now.
Sent from my G2
So are you saying that all people who use the trackball to wake up their phones are lazy? Are you saying that wanting to make it easier for myself is a matter a laziness? So what do you call a TV Remote. I COULD get up a turn the TV off, or I can use the remote. Your logic is flawed, maybe you need to find something worthwhile to ***** about.

That would be a great feature. On my Nexus I use NoLock from the market. One of the main reasons I use this is because of the power button on the Nexus had a history of dying after long wear and tear. If you can take away the wear and tear on a part with a history of failing then it is a big plus.I want this feature for my G2 as well. Tried both NoLock and Widgetlocker without success. They both work on the Nexus One without root.
+1
great idea. Thats why they did it on the nexus one....
no laziness. also because the power button broke easy on the nexus and people wanted a way to unlock their phone.
The power button being on top is one of my number one things i dislike about this phone, makes it akward to turn on. So I would LOVE track pad wake. Especially since my hard case kind makes the track pad recessed a bit so it would be hard to push in my pocket.
There is a app on the market called extended controls which has a option to turn off auto lock and use any button to wake the phone up I use it in the car when listening to music, pandora, or making phone calls...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yup it is kind of habit, not simply laziness
I am still getting used to pressing the power key and then swipe the screen to unlock, come on! Most of the time I just turn on then shut the screen
When I was using my G1 with custom rom all I need to do was to press the menu button twice
Hope this thing gets sorted out soon

haha such a heated debate over this. but i agree the power button is in a really bad spot. i was baffled why they didnt make the trackball wake up the phone, especially since it doesnt stick out and sits flush with the front part of the phone so there's minimal chance of an accidental push. to have to push a small button on the very top and back part of the phone and then have to swipe across the bottom of the screen to unlock the phone is really a pain in the ass, especially using it with one hand. the only way it makes sense is if u slid down from the top right of the screen to unlock so u got one fluid motion going.
and while we're on the subject of dumb hardware decisions why the search button on the front but no phone button? maybe it's just me
I came from the iPhone 2G, so Im familar with the power button placement. It did take me a little time to get use to it since the G2 is slightly thicker. I dont think it's in a bad spot though.
Now if we want to talk about bad spots, then the micro USB port is the winner. Not sure what they were thinking there. Why cant it be at the bottom?
Anyway, the trackpad definitely needs a way to wake up the phone. If not a touch-to-wake at least a press-to-wake would be cool.
Personally, the power button should be reserved for powering down and locking the phone.
it was a simple hack on the mytouch slide when i had that, all we needed to do was change a few things in the keymaps and it was fixed, unfortunately since we have NAND locked device we would need to re-apply the hack every time(save hacked keymap to sdcard and add entry to visionary.sh to copy it over to /system) maybe i will look into it, maybe i won't either way the rest of you should be able to figure it out with some looking around the forums and at the correct files
yeah, need track pad and shutter button wake.

Verizon power button mod

Been trying to think of what the best way would be for me to modify the power button on the verizon model.. Its stupidly difficult to distinguish...
So I tried a small clear rubber "foot" that you might find stuck on the bottom of a glass vase or decorative tray. You can get these at any walmart or craft store. They are meant to protect the surface the object is sitting on, as well as to reduce slipping. I had to cut it into a square to make it fit and it looks and works great! However, I have a feeling the adhesive will soon wear off and this thing will fall off coming in or out of my pocket one day. Its clear too so the power button light shows through. Its great, it just wont last..
Anyone else thought of anything to make this work? My other thought was a dab of hot glue..
So sorry! I realized I just posted this in the wrong forum. But now I can't figure out how to delete the thread or move it... This is a Verizon specific thing, but its not a software mod...
Admin - feel free to move if not appropriate..
I've been considering a similar mod. Verizon really screwed up these buttons. If I didn't want the wireless charging, I'd just swap out the back and buttons from the international variant.
I'm thinking of adding a drop of clear epoxy to the buttons. Need to do a little testing first, though, to see how best to get a tactile bump since the epoxy will tend to self-level.
No pun intended, but I am not sure what the big deal is over the power button. I very rarely even use it. I use knock on for the screen on and off. I only use the power button if I need to reboot or to shut the phone off.
The problem for me isn't just the power button, it's also the volume buttons. In general they are just all hard to distinguish between..
I will add that over the past day of using the rubber "foot", my phone has rebooted a few times, I think cause the button is being pushed in my pocket... It does stick out a little too much.. Probably need to use one that's not quite as tall...

The only time I use my power button is to turn the phone on. To turn it off I use the "Universal Touch Service" that I start by triple tapping on the home button/key/icon (whatever you want to call it). The after I turn the phone back on I just turn the service off. Very cool.

I cut a tiny square of skateboard grip tape and placed it on the power button. Works great and it's not permanent.

As above, The problem isn't so much with the power button as it is with volume. I use my phone as an MP3 player all day, every day. I can't hardly distinguish between buttons when holding the phone in my hand, let alone while in my pocket.
Maybe I should use the volume rocker dongle that came with my IEMs...
I'm going to try a TINY dab of clear silicone on the power button.. Just gotta get to the store..
I still think the best thing may be a very small clear rubber foot, since it's very easily removable.. Gotta get to the store for one of those though too..
