How close do people hold their phones to their face? - EVO 4G General

Looking at the specs of the iPhones new screen... are people really holding their phones THAT close to their faces? EVO 4G... You can keep it at a distance and still see EVERYTHING clear and sharp... I dont get it?

It's simple. Think of it like TV's in your house. The smaller the screen the closer to the TV you sit to make it appear bigger.

Agreed.. fixed that Zagg screen protector.

I enjoy picking out the pixels because it makes everything seem very matrix-y, so i have it right up in my face. That, and my vision is horrible.

Anyone have the HD in hand?

With the Touch Pro/Fuze, there were a few people I bumped into that had the device in hand before the release (job perks). Does anyone lurking this forum have the device in hand, or know someone that does?
I played with it in Gitex Dubai - UAE. Looks nice but i hate to judge a device while it is being connected to a power cable and a security cable.

can understand that. lst time i went into a shop to try out a touch diamond just to see the interface, it didn't even work because those idiots at the shop connected the security cable on top of the screen, destroying it ^^
But beside of this, can you tell us about your experience? how big does it feel? whats with the screen size? how does the interface handle on this version . tell us every bit!!
Sure,
Size: seemed big in hand, but again, i beleieve this sense is due to the 'Cables' below and Behind :|
Screen size and quality: simply Amazing.
Performance: seemed excellent, without any lag. better than diamond.

haha, i cant wait also for the release ....
as for the keyboard, it is yes, way better than hat on diamond. but i am using TOUCHPAL on diamond, so i can't tell exactly the difference from the built in which i never used.
Good thing, yes, the upper part of the screen is too big where u can see more while typing.

Good. I liked the sturdy feel of the Diamond which was largely because of the robust feel that the metal border gives.
Good thing the HD has this too.
Does it feel solid in general? I like a phone that feels heavy and solid. I know the weight spec but it all comes down to the total feel.

Just got this in my work email from my Sprint rep

From what I can gather, it looks like:
Angle touch is -- touching the device at an angle... Instead of using a stylus to go straight down (90 degrees) to accept, it supports angle touching..
Size touching - it measures the size of what is touching the screen. So you touch with a thumb vs a stylus, it measures the surface areas of the two.
I could be wrong though..

that is just silly for it not to do this... who would use the stylus or finger or anything in a 90degree angle? It is normally the point of contact that it registers. So I am guessing there is something else to this, and refers to some future benefit, but I cant think of any.
all just speculation on my part.

Not necessarily. I don't mean an exact 90 degree angle, but rather, a straight touch, and not picking up other parts of the screen...
But you're right, all speculation.
I thought it meant it can sense the angle at which something touches it. So it can tell if it's coming in at 45 or 90 degrees... Could be wrong though.
Sense angle?
How could it do that? A point of contact is just a point correct? To determine angle you would have to go through layers of detection right? A point on top layer compared to a point on a subsequent layer could determine angle, or a camera (multiple/3d) could sense angle, but how could a pad sensing a point (multiple points) on its surface determine angle?

Well... My guess is they do it by the diameter and shape of the sensed finger. It's not actually just a point. It's usually circular and they find the center point and use that. Your touch is generally far bigger than 1px. That's also how they can tell how hard you push down. Harder you push, the bigger the diameter. If you push on an angle, the shape distorts as well. It's not perfect, but I've seen it used. I forget where though.

I must say, I'm shocked the Samsung Epic is only .06'' thicker than the EVO.

0.56 inches versus the EVO's .5 inches. What are my fellow EVO owners' impressions on the Epic? The thickness was the only thing that caught my eye. I'm pretty leery when it comes to non-BlackBerry hardware keyboards.

I'm glad the evo is as thick as it is, any thinner and it would hurt my hand to hold it.
It looks like an interesting phone, reminds me too much of a PSP though. Though after having this big of a screen I don't think I could downsize.
The Moment was only (an average of) 4mm bigger than the Hero in each dimension and yet the Moment felt like a brick compared to the Hero.
It is amazing what a few mm will do, and don't forget to compare the weight!
Is this the "Galaxy S Pro" with a new name?

Yes this is the biggest reason for the fact that it is barely any thicker. AMOLED means they need no backlight and super amoled with the touch screen built right into the actual screen means it's even thinner than normal amoled. This should save about 3mm right there.

I had no idea what a difference AMOLED made. I wonder if they will have shortages like the Incredible. I'm guessing that it won't be as bad since the Epic is coming straight from Samsung.

That phone is impressive. Love the idea of taking pictures in 3d, but I suck at taking pictures, so a blurry 3d picture is just as worthless as a blurry 2d picture..

It's also convenient for using it as a clock at night...I'll miss the kickstand.
Despite it all I want the kickstand also
I'm sure 3rd party manufacturers will make cases with the kick stand. Not sure why they dropped it from the design though
I will miss the kickstand. I use it to take more stable pictures and when holding the phone in landscape mode. I flip the kickstand open and slide it between my ring and middle finger on my right hand. Helps so much! and big hands helps too I guess.
I haven't seen a picture of the back yet...where are you guys seeing that there's no kickstand?
Kickstands are FTW

Anyone else not been able to use this phone because of its ergonomics

I had a GS II but had to get rid of it because it caused me so much hand pain. I should declare that I do have existing problems with my hands but the Arc doesn't really cause me any problems. I think it was a combination of its width and the squareness of the design that did for me. I have tried out the Sensation and though that is only a bit narrower it seemed much easier on my hands, I reckon because it's a more rounded design.
I thought it was a good device but I am not going to keep using a phone that caused me that much constant pain.
First one i have come across though as it is larger i did recommend a young lady to hold it before buying .http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

For me the phone is too slim and slippery, but silicone cover did the trick and it steadily fits my hand no problem.

So have I. Which makes me think it's more the design than the size. The Arc isn't that much smaller but is narrower and a much better thought out ergonomic design IMO.
By the way I should have said I have a form of nerve issue with both hands.

Hehe I'm not saying that there's something wrong with the phone, but I can't reach the top left side of the screen one handed and barely reach the middle left side. That being said I wouldn't change that beautiful big screen for anything, so I can live with.

It's a fraction too wide for me, but I can live with it just. I've suffered from a bit of RSI in the past so I can imagine how it might hurt if you have similar issues (carpal tunnel etc).
The SE Arc next to this feels much nicer in the hand as it's about 5-8mm narrower - yet still sports a 4.2" display. Maybe that would suit better.
