Am I the only one who doesn't like "Droid" - Nexus One General

Maybe I'm just picky, but I don't like the the way "Droid" is becoming the defacto name for all Android phones thanks to Verizon's add campaigns. It's like calling any old mp3 player an iPod, even though it's a Zune or a Sansa. I just feel the need to correct people when they ask what kind of phone I have, and I tell them it's a Nexus One, they say "Huh", then I explain it's and Android phone, and then they're like "Oh, you mean a Droid", and then I have to correct with "no, AAANNNdroid, not just Droid".

Dont mind.. really.. i also just nod when my aunt calls my Computer a hard drive and an mp3 player a walkman..

Don't have the problem in the UK, so Android it is.

funny thins is,as i was reading this, verizons "Droid" commercial was on the tv lmao

I really dont like the Droid name or add campaign. Some of the (Moto) Droid users are super annoying fanboys like the apple ones. Most of them barely know how to use a smartphone and the Droid might even be their first. And all the "Droid" apps just confuse people because its slightly misleading. Apps might work for the Droid only or all of Android. But the most annoying thing is when I hear "Droid does", its just annoying. I don't correct people calling my N1 a droid to just Android, I add call it the Google Phone.

I would do the same thing with my grandmother as well, correcting some people wouldn't do any good. I guess the one thing that really got me, was when my roommate called my phone a "Droid". He's a geek like me, not as tech savvy, but a huge gamer (PC, console, whatever), and we he called my phone a "Droid", it bothered me really bad and I had to correct him.
It's stupid though when you thing about it (yes, I'm admitting my own annoyance is stupid), cause there are many other thing I call by the excepted name and not their official name as well. Examples would be, Kleenex(facial tissue), Weedeater(weed trimmer), Cresent Wrench(open end adjustable wrench). All these things are actually a specific brand of something, but I came to call them all by that name long before I even knew that was not their technical name. I have to wonder if I would have had the same problem with all of them if I were alive back when those brands had came out and people started calling them by that name?

As a phone I do not like the droid due to the keyboard but as a marketing tool to get Android OS out there its been great!

Holy crap. Here in the states we've got government at every level committed to special interest groups and selling us down the river, and here we are getting upset with silly advertisements and resultant jargon.

while i don't like the Droid label all android phones are getting, whatever helps spread the android kooliad i'm a fan of...VZW did it right with this massive ad campaign...we're finally getting a leg up on the iphone weenies

reminds me of the crappy moto

I find the moto (droid) commercials really awesome. It be kool if all android device would be called droid blank. Droid rachael lol

its kind of like when someone says, "hey can i borrow your PC for a second?" and i respond "no but you can borrow my macbook"

You guys are lucky that people around you know what android or droid is. Here where I live, when I tell people that I'm getting a Nexus One, they're like,"Man!! never heard of it. Get Nokia n97 or iPh*ne". I get so frustrated when I have to tell them the phone's specs... I wish google advertised its N1...

Every time you hear a "Droid" commercial, George Lucas gets paid.
Verizon has to pay a royalty to LucasFilms Ltd. to use the name "Droid". I just find that funny.
I'm hoping the next HTC superphone for Android will be the HTC R2D2 or something ridiculously blatant like that.

I hate it because it is very confusing... Verizon has the Droid, Droid Eris, Droid Incredible, and so forth... so you can't distinguish any of them.
Plus, it is just annoying that Verizon is essentially "taking ownership" of Android, in an odd way... I hate Verizon. Hate them. Have I mentioned my hate for Verizon?

Yeah, when I showed someone my n1 and told them its an android phone, they gasped because they couldn't believe that I switched to verzion. I had to correct them on the diff between droid and android, but in hindsight, it was a waste of time. Either way, the more advertisements out there can only help android's visibility, because Google seems incapable of advertising its products.

I felt like adding this. lol

Don't really mind as it benefits all Android users. look at how much more exposure OS has gotten, how many more apps we get. whatever helps, so long that they do not make Droid only apps, I am good. Android is not nearly as catchy as the Droid, and Verizon really wanted this thing to take off. guess what, it did! as much as I do not like them for their crappy rates and ridiculous fees, I do appreciate what they have done to Android.

Hardware, like most Samsung products, is usually pretty immaculate - can't complain about that. TouchWhiz UI is likely garbage as with most Samsung products software.
So with Root and a competent developer who could get AOSP working - Rockin.

My problems with the moment were hardware related. I'm going to keep an eye on this phone though. I want a kicking 3G phone though since I don't live in a 4G area and hate the idea of paying extra for a feature I won't use.

Also they seem to hate the default way of setting up Android OS. Their file system is pretty bizarre.
every sammy i have owned has sucked.. lol but for every sammy i hated prolly 3 more liked.. so mostly personal pref..
Im happy to see this come to sprint..for one reason..they need it. more android..look at verizon.. lol
This is like phone porn. I'm all horny for touchwiz 3. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/29/samsung-epic-4g-preview/
Think this will be my next phone, i'm tired of waiting for HTC to put out a killer android phone that has a slide out keyboard. I have had bad experiences with samsung phones in the past (they were before smart phones even existed) but i'm willing to give them one more shot with this phone.
I've never had a Sammy phone. I had a couple Sony Ericsson's and then the HTC Wizard came out, been with HTC ever since. The hard qwerty is what drew me to HTC, I had no idea places like xda existed. It's been over a year since HTC has made a keyboard phone and the HTC Vision has one but I think it's only going to Tmous and I can't do that because they dont have a single 3G tower in Arkansas... I'm presently on AT$T because when I first got a cellular in 2003 Cingular was the best carrier in the state and I'm a creature of habit so I've stuck with them. But, they suck about picking up phones I like, the iPhone has hamstrung their network, and they're handing out free femtocells but when I called about that they basically told me to fu*k off. My two complaints about my TP2 are slowness and no headphone jack. Epic 4G/Galaxy S Pro ameliorates both of those to a t...
So, how do you people like Sprint? They'd save me money and I like the new phone every year... Also, what's the build quality like on sammies? Last question is are they as easy to take apart/repair as HTC phones are?
I have to say that every samsung phone I, or anyone I know has owned, holds up like a tank. They drop them, throw them and step on them and they are fine. I wouldn't be that rough, but its nice to see.
Really? I was a little worried about build quality since they seem to use a lot of plastic and little if any metal. I'd love for Epic's slider to be as firm as the Droid's but wasn't expecting much.
Well, their initial quality is what it is. But they stay in that condition with very good resilliance in my, and my friend's, experience.
I have a sammy dumbphone, the a727, and it has amazing build quality. Soft touch plastic, super thin and light, great battery life.
Samsung can make a good phone if they put their minds to it. The epic seems like the best galaxy phone, mostly because of that soft touch back. Getting the soft touch battery cover for my Pre made it feel five times better, much more solid and durable than the crappy glossy bendy plastic that is default on the pre(and the other galaxy variants).

"stereotypical iPhone user"
I almost peed myself. LOL
I'd say they're both equally annoying.
iPhone people are idiots and refuse to see anything but Lord Jobs. We Android fanboys are just as bad, we're more informed, but we think Android is the only way.
It's definitely about even IMO

But Android is the only way! UGH!
Despite the fact that fanboydom isn't exactly the smartest choice, I would say that Android fanboys are better just because we don't ignore glaring problems with things.
Most Android fanboys would agree that the Droid X is horrible because of the locked bootloader and eFuse bull*stuff*.
On the other hand, most iPhone fanboys conveniently do not notice problems.
Still, fanboydom in general is not good, especially if the fanboy/girl doesn't KNOW (or won't accept that) they are a fanboy/girl. Personal acknowledgement of such a thing allows for healthier thinking.
Also, shouldn't it be a Linux shell, not a DOS command 'field' (considering how Android runs on a Linux kernel)? :/
douchebags are douchebags....you don't need a phone to make you one. Apple has more users therefore they have more douchebags. Android users are just a more vocal crowd so their douchebags stick out more.

Android fanboys are not nearly as vocal as Apple fanboys.
Dig up an old benchmark thread showing the evo getting stomped and tell me android fanbois aren't as bad as apple.

Haha I couldn't have said it better myself.
I think fanboys of any kind are annoying. I'm not a big fan of Apple as a company, but I'll admit, the iPhone is just a better phone for some people. For me, I need a little for hackability and openness in my phone, so android is the clear choice for me. Personally, I think it is pretty awesome we are at a place where there are a ton of different, awesome phones to fill everyone's needs.

THIS!
I just might put this in my Sig.
I'm neither. I hate Apple but always test out their new products and give them a fair chance.
I think Android has its flaws but were doing a great job of fixing them..
Who cares what others think. Just use what works for you...
I'll chime in here. And I'm using the term "fanboys" only for convenience, no offense to either side.
In my experience, Apple fanboys are vehemently tied to their brand, and I think it's an obvious form of elitism coupled with the fact that they paid too much for a device that's "idiot proof." They know how to turn it on and use the basic functions, but beyond that they're at the mercy of the Genius Bar. But if something does go wrong, there is usually very little complaining from inside the community. It's brought to light by reviewers and outsiders saying "why would you put up with that?"
Android fanboys, on the other hand, tend to be more in-tune with their devices and really want to know how they work. But when they don't work, they flood the forums and the manufacturers' inboxes with reports and complaints. They also depend on a much broader open-source community to maintain and enhance the system as a whole. It's still elitist, but more in the way that Linux users are cocky because they tend to know their system much more intimately, as opposed to Apple users who, in large part, can barely handle one button on their phone.
Apologies to both sides if I've offended anybody. There are exceptions on both sides.
I am an Android Fan, I hate Apple, not because is apple, i just dont like how they run things(they like a big monopoly), Android I love because Google,(open-source)( always have prefer google over yahoo, lolz).I would say one thing, apple fanboys are not that smart, if they use a android phone they will say, is to hard i dont understand it.
You know it's not so much the apple fanboys that get to me it's the nasty by-products of their fandom. Like If my EVO gets mistaken for a iphone one more freakin time.... I usually just say no it's something better a android!
fanboys are the reason I never stick to a forum...Ive had 3 accounts here I think. Get annoyed of fanboys leave, comeback forget user/pass, annoyed of fanboys, leave comeback forget user/pass. Also the reason I only have 2 posts on this account cause I have to sensor myself....haha
well, both sides have pros and cons. at least we're not apple users sucking on the teet waiting for our updates to fix our software that tells us we have more reception then we actually do.... at least we can take it on ourselves to fix the problems that other devs might have missed. we have our cake and eat it too, and oh is it soooooo gooooood!!
Another big difference I have noticed is that when apple fanboys ask about an accessory they expect to be able to go and buy one.
Android fanboys will suggest that they make whatever they want.
Just a funny observation I noticed

"You are by far my best component"!?
Lol. What does that even mean?
There is no point arguing with a apple fanatic, its like arguing with a rock.
Maybe if you throw in works like "wonderful", "fantastic" ,"incredible", "awesome"...
lol at "sketchy" and "bit laggy", thats so non-technical and abstract coming from a nerd. (probably never even tried a nexus)
Otherwise you should have showed him:
your battery,
your sd card,
a ps-ef from a shell (sh, bash etc),
your ability to use any working SIM,
navigation, voice recognition,
your ability to hold the phone any way you want

I agree on all of the above. I was going to say, at one point, "at least I don't have to put duct tape on my phone to call people" xD, but decided to leave that out. And - another thing - even a Jailbroken iPhone is barely customizable. It was late and I didn't want to mention that, because I would have stayed up for another hour arguing with him. I would have, too, if it wasn't so late. xD
It makes me laugh when Apple fanboys say that a Mac can run Windows 7. Then why the f*** did you get a mac? lol. I've stopped arguing with Apple fanboys for the reason that britoso mentioned.
lol iOS4. finally caught up to what winmo and android could have already done.

Shun the non believer! Shunnnn! Shunnnn!
xD
The iPad is too bulky, imo. I'd rather carry around my laptop. And I do.
And Mac's aren't that bad, they got some super sweet media editing software, that I love using. But still.
I have no qualms with any Mac computer...I think the OS is slick...I'm just real nitpicky and I honestly hate the lil dock bar (good for looks, but nothing more, give me a taskbar anyday over a dock bar) and I also LOATH the finder bar...give me the menu in EACH and EVERY app...many other things I just don't like...and many things it does indeed do better though...I do not like the explorer either...(same with Ubuntu btw, but that's customizable to an extent so a non issue)
The main appeal of Android IMO is it's desktop like feel....Especially with ADW or LauncherPro installed...no sea of icons can beat that IMO.
I love that everyone thinks they're "a hacker" because they can complete a three-click jailbreak.
Although I will say that the same applies on the Android side. Rooting and flashing a custom ROM based on instructions found on the internet doesn't make anyone a hacker either. The hackers are the ones that did it first.
Well, Technically, all a Hacker is, is someone who is taking something and making it do something that it wasn't meant to do. And android was meant to do bloody well everything. So there's not much hacking going on here, is there ;D
Yea I'm still new to Android but I was able to whip up heavily customized versions of the latest Windows Mobile build in no time. Even Windows Mobile gives you more choices when it comes to user interface and tasks.... it just runs ****ty and ugly (although the later builds are coming around).
Nothing beats Android though. I tell all my friends and family that have iPhones that "Android is like an iPhone on crack"
Wow.
Just wow.
p.s. (It's just a phone you have no stake in)
harrisonfordwhogivesa****.gif
But wait.. the iPhone 4 does have the most advanced antenna design ever. It's "revolutionary."
Oh, and you should've told him that you don't have to kill your warranty to tether for free.. or pay 99 cents for a flashlight app.
LOL, sour apples doesn't have a clue!

A Happy moment with my rooted DHD.

I want to share a moment just last week, when I was again glad I had rooted my DHD. I realize this kind of thread is unusual here, yet I think it's also important to appreciate.
I walked into a mobile shop to enquire about networks and getting a smarter tariff sorted out for my needs. When a sales assistant ignored me expressing I didn't want to change phones and whipped out his brand new HTC Evo 3D, and began to show off. He swiped the screen and a look of smug sanctification was written across his face, as the sense screens whirled.
"Oh and what phone do you have?", he half heartedly asked.
"The Desire HD", I replied.
"oh", a look of pity, or disdain (couldn't tell which) crossed his face. "about 5 generations older than my new phone".
I noticed he was running a task killer, and I commented on it, I was beginning to feel competitive, something about him suggested to me he had limited product knowledge.
I asked had he ever visited this site, as I had learned so much here about my phone and I had made the decision to root it. I got a blank look...the timing could not of been better..I then whipped out my DHD, turned it on, he looked surprised to see Sense 3 lock screen, I then whirled my screens around (such a useless exercise really). As it it smoothly came to a halt, I tilted it to show the 3d widgets ( I just couldn't help myself).
"ah, but mine has 3d and 2 processors", was he's only immediate reaction.
I just smiled and replied "and I guess you'll be getting a new phone soon again, rather than actually getting to use your phones full potential". I really at this point felt a little sad for him, he obviously updated as quick as a new phone came out under the believe newer is always better.
No matter how he dressed his phone up, and don't get me wrong it's a lovely phone he has, apart from some minor hardware specs, my rooted DHD could match his in every way and do a whole host of other useful things he would never be able to do.
"I can play Games faster on mine", was his final remark and which I raised an eyebrow, and replied "when I want to play proper games I have a PC"
Later that day, another individual in a shop asked me why I didn't wish to change phones, when I showed them, they understood totally and I pointed them to XDA.
All of this would not have been possible with out the Great bunch of Devs, chefs, and the general great feedback you get here on XDA, and I wish to say a massive thank you, your efforts are very much appreciated, and hopefully soon I'll be in a position to donate as well.
Would be good to hear any others tales of your Rooted DHD happy moments..
Dang, I'm in awe. Awesome story! I love the way you reply to the salesperson.
Yeahhhh beautiful!
We always encounter such circumstances! And we always feel like winners!
Personally, i encounter such things probably once a week when i show off my phone, especially with my friends having Sensation phone while i have FOR FREE a sensation ROM!
Cheers!
Awesome story. I love it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I have had my phone rooted for the last 7 months, yet I never felt the need till then to show it. My phone is my own, and not everyone can appreciate what rooting can achieve. Something about him, brought out 7 months of glee in me...I'm proud I didn't go overboard..still the thoughts persist with that sales assistant. I know he was doing his job to a point.
Yet personal it became as he didn't validate, he just mocked. Until he became desperate to validate he's own ego.
I'm very tempted to go back and show him a ROM by Capychimp, RCTeam and Coolexe I've had on my phone since first Beta.

Pretty cool
Please do not take this the wrong way.
Why is it cool a celebrity uses it, in fact I don't get the whole celebrity endorsement thing anyway.
I have never once in my life bought anything based on an endorsement.
My thought is, as all companies do it, instead of paying them millions for a commercial, use that money in other ways that would actually Increase sales.
There is no person alive that if I walked up to them it would make me scream, cry, or act crazy.
Got off on a rant there sorry, it just irritates me people on here are getting screwed with their orders or returns but I bet Samsung has given millions to people to carry and promote the phone
Well we don't know that he was endorsing the phone at all in that picture. Hes a guy whos well know and using Android, I say thats win all around most celebs are Mac heads. Have to keep the zombies in check actor are people too shouldn't really matter what they use. I wonder why he chose it?

They are using money to increase sales, with celebrity endorsements. It works because people want a phone like Taylor Swift has, it might help them shake it off even better.
It looks like he genuininely is using the phone as his personal device (using the spen for instance). He's certainly not posing for photos with it. I think people have him all wrong.
Celebrity endorsements really don't mean anything to me, but, at the same time, it's nice to see a Hollywood star ditch the iPhone and use an Android, much less a Note 4.

Agreed, and don't take this the wrong way, your signature says john 3:16 and there is no one on the planet that would make me fall for any religion, why is it cool to just believe, when we have a thinking brain?
Just saying, there are things that bother us, but we need to learn to live and let live.
I am all for live and let live.
Not sure what my signature has to do with anything whatsoever to do with anything mentioned but by all means, use your thinking brain in any way you please.

If you think for 1 second that these clebs get millions to carry a phone around then you are nuts. They may get a phone for free but thats about it. Unless its a TV deal for a select few then that is about it. If its not on TV its usally just free swag.
