EVO = 3g and 4g or just 4g ? - Hero CDMA General

im asking this because i was in the local sprint store picking up a car charger for my wifes moment. i ask if they had a release date for the EVO he said no and 4g wont be in the area is who knows when . i said i wasunder the impression the EVO was 4g winmax but was able to use 3g as well .
well he looked stunned and if he had no idea what i was talking about .
so is it 3g and 4g or just 4g . if its just 4g i see no reason for myself to pick an evo till 4g is in my area

3g and 4g. In fact in some of the screen shots floating around you can see it connected to 3g. But regardless, it's definitely both.

It will have an evdo radio.
According to HTC, you won't be able to use 4G and Voice at the same time due to software limitations... which definitely makes it sound like it may be a possibility with a future software update.

in my store im the go to guy, known as the "android guy", i can say not all reps are knowledgable for sure but in my store if someone doesnt know they ask someone they know who does. in my store again theres this one guy whos worked for sprint for about 2-3 years but he doesnt know much about phones he sees as just a job and nothing more, so theres def reps like that also their there for money nothing else.

Eh, it is the same way that you don't get 3g and voice simultaneously on the Hero you have right now.
I guess you could always go GSM AT&T and pay twice as much for the same voice/data package. Might as well pick up an Iphone too.
Hopefully they update the software to allow for data+voice, but it isn't even a phone-deciding factor for me. The EVO has 4g+3g+1x btw.

3G and 1X are really the same thing-ish. They are both in what's considered the 3G family. 1X being the lowest tier/speed and EVDO Rev. B the fastest.

yeah i guess if we had a radio upgrade that would work? i mean on winmo there was a ton of custom radios and such.
4g is wimax. the hero doesn't support wimax. there are no wimax phones out on sprint.
sprint would run the game if they did that (although kinda hard to believe) haha maybe their gonna get a "rollback" price on rent for the towers....funny thing is thats where i signed up for my sprint service is walmart

i don't think sprint would do that. they want to bring out different technologies to make you buy new phones and re-up that contract at the same time. They don't want you to sit on your old phones.

Dude. Seriously. If 2.2 hits the market before the hero gets 2.1, Sprint and HTC are going to look like fools. And have some SERIOUSLY pissed off customers on their hands. Maybe if THEY thought about putting their apps in the market instead of trying to implement them into the software at release (as the article mentions google is planning to do), maybe their wouldn't be such a lag in updates.

+10. Living in an area that is completely covered by 4g makes this purchase damn near compulsory. Though I must admit....no one would have to twist my arm very hard to convince me to buy the evo, lol!
4g
the only thing sprint hasnt told us about the evo is the 4g to my knowledge is going to be limited to certain kb's, not sure of the number yet not sure if this is even true but def a rumor from my friend that works at sprint, while 3g on the evo will be unlimited but they are selling 4g by the gb i think, like for an extra 10 bucks on top of your data plan it gives you 4g but its limited, i use my hero as a modem so that would suck if i got an evo. idk yet i guess we will see in due time.

Actually, the rumor I heard from someone at Sprint (not a store employee) is that it will be exactly like the current 4G plans... unlimited 4G, 5GB limit on 3G. The only thing they are currently wrestling with is pricing on the voice + data plans.

verizon to get 4g ns in feb?!

http://free-pc-guides.com/news/veri...tible-samsunggoogle-nexus-s-in-february-07514
the hell
Same rumor running amok, but baseless rumors aside, would it be that surprising that a Verizon Nexus S will take advantage of a network which Veriz. is about to push hard (LTE/"4G")? Will Samsung's processors be optimized by February for different network's "4G"?
It's entirely possible, even understandable.
This could be true, but I bet Verizon will want Google to plaster their logo on it and give it some "features"(bloatware) only available on Verizon. Also, there is no way Samsung would ever have that much time to optimize a new radio in 2 months without them ****ing up:
"Dear Samsung, my 4g radio keeps going out please fix it!"
Fix? Oh just use 3g, you now have a 3g enabled device.
Just an example that you can't rush things like that. Unless they have been working real closely with Samsung to deliver a 4g enabled Nexus S. A Nexus S sounds a little more realistic but a 4g Nexus S sounds pretty much unimaginable. Notice how Samsung didn't even put the HSPA+ on this one, you really think they are going to make their second flagship device not have 4g and make a new edition that does the some minor changes(like an iPhone)?
Im sorry but Tmobiles HSPA 7.2 is plenty fast,

How Does Sprint Roll Out 4G?

How does Sprint go about choosing cities for 4G? Also, when will most smaller "cities" finally have 4G? A year from now? Sooner, later? Does Sprint have any publication outlining their plans? I live Columbia, SC, and right now speeds are slllowwww on 3G. So when is YOUR city getting 4G? We've all been payin for it!
good luck finding that information out. I tried to contact sprint about those exact things and got the same bs over and over and over and over (yes four times )
Slowly
I live in Greenville and someone that works for Clearwire said they have one tower in the area but that's it so far. I'm not getting my hopes up for a full rollout any time soon and after getting to use 4G recently, I don't really care anymore either. T-Mobile's 3G is faster than what I've personally seen from Sprint's 4G, my wife and I are switching this summer when our ETF drops to $50/line.
I know. They pick a random city and provide customers with very spotty coverage that barely penetrates walls
You need to carry around a ghost buster battery pack to fully utilize 4G constantly any how. The only time I use 4G is when I'm plugged into a power source or to watch one video if needed. Almost useless pretty much, I'm in a 4G area and I'm using a rom without 4G and I'm just fine.

I have to agree with elegantai, that seems like the most likely answer. I'm definitely not complaining though, they just turned it on here within the last week.
I've been wondering how they decide their rollouts. I have a feeling that the commercial is spot on

I have heard that they were going to be using LightSquared possibly. Not sure if that is VZWs LTE provider, but since Sprint uses VZWs 3G towers, I can't see why they won't strike a roaming contract with them again.

An LTE roll out for Sprint will happen.
It's been talked about that Sprint may embrace both LTE and Wimax standards.
However, it's not an instant process and a phone would have to have an LTE radio to use the LTE band.

In 20 days some sort of deal might go down, or they might start some sort of project, but there's no way they can instantly switch and certainly not in such a short timeframe.
IF Sprint drops Clearwire then yes, Wimax would not work with Sprint phones.
It's been suggested that Sprint may go to quadband phones though.
Who knows. I'm not even sure Sprint does, which is part of the problem.

I wouldn't doubt it.
Sounds like a good idea actually.
And it coincides with the idea that Sprint might just run both standards along side CDMA (which would eventually be phased out, eventually.)
Both LTE and Wimax have uses.
Why shouldn't both technologies be used for what they do best?

Neither are true "4g"
Both are just different technology standards (well not even standards lol).
Its just like wireless a, b, g or n.
Just different "standards" for wirelessly transfering data.

In 2009, the ITU-R organization specified the IMT-Advanced (International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced) requirements for 4G standards, setting peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 Mbit/s for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users).[1]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
Basically, 1 Gbit/s when not moving, 100mbit/s when moving and VOIP.
Everything runs through data.
Texting, Voice as well.
lte is awesome, if you use your phone as it comes out of box. ask any thunderbolt owner what happens when you throw an aosp rom on top of the lte radio...

It has nothing to do with LTE and all to do with the spectrum used by Verizon.
Wimax would be just as "awesome" if at the same frequency.
