huh? so all current 3g customers will get a free network upgrade? or will it cost more and require additional services? i just want the update already.

4g as in wimax? i don't think there's a wimax radio in our phones.

yeah he's full of it! jesus i love my hero but all of this bad news lately is really dragging me down. no flash and no 2.1 yet.
good thing i got a new pancake rom to play with...thanks to the devs on here!

The Supersonic or whatever sprint is going to call it will have WIMAX(4g). But it doesn't even matter if your not in 4g coverage area.

and the fact we will have to wait for the network and tower upgrades to take effect. which could take a long time.

the rumor sites say there(sprint) trying to get a deal with wall-mart to install the 4g towers on their stores. if thats the case 4g will be everywhere.

yeah i guess if we had a radio upgrade that would work? i mean on winmo there was a ton of custom radios and such.

4g is wimax. the hero doesn't support wimax. there are no wimax phones out on sprint.

sprint would run the game if they did that (although kinda hard to believe) haha maybe their gonna get a "rollback" price on rent for the towers....funny thing is thats where i signed up for my sprint service is walmart

i dont think a radio update would work.

never say never. for all we know the current radio chip supports it but requires a specific radio upgrade?

i don't think sprint would do that. they want to bring out different technologies to make you buy new phones and re-up that contract at the same time. They don't want you to sit on your old phones.

I agree. The supersonic is sexier in my opinion plus WiMax is a nifty thing for the future. Hey, if I coud get ANY phone to work with Sprint it would be the Nokia N900 but since that aint gonna happen I'll wait for the Supersonic.
Supersonic is really only going to be relevent if you either plan on moving to, or already live in a WiMax area. The average two years that it takes for us to rotate through phones will surely be passed by the time one gets "anticipated" WiMax coverage.

Works for me since i live in baltimore where they rolled it out already.
On another note though, I thought they specifically said the N1 was not coming to sprint at the launch. In that articile I don't see anything saying its coming to sprint, only what networking it supports. Not sure where the whole sprint thing is coming from. Doubt the N1 and supersonic would be coming to sprint.
I will definitely do a serious comparison of the Supersonic, and the Nexus One, should this thing really come to Sprint (I'm in Atlanta, so I'm covered for WiMax). And if the rumor of Sprint wanting to use Wal-Mart stores for 4G tower locations, this should help make WiMax available almost everywhere on the eastern US.

I saw that also. My next upgrade is not until November, so I'm looking forward to getting something with WiMax. I live in Hampton Roads, VA so not sure how long it will be before it's rolled out here though.
+1 waiting on Supersonic. Here in Atlanta, Sprint's 4G WiMax network was the first in the country.
Call me spoiled, but I don't think I can go without SenseUI, especially on a platform with a rumored 1ghz cpu.
I'll be just fine with my Rooted and (soon enough 2.1) ROM'ed Hero until the Supersonic drops.
True true, as long as the Supersonic does WiMax, EvDO, and they don't cut out 1x, I'd rather have that than an N1
We have WiMax here in the DFW metroplex, so no worries there. The only reason not to get a wimax phone is the possibility that a carrier in the US will deploy an LTE network and kill interest in wimax, hehe.
Well WiMax has not rolled out where I live & it's hasn't been announced as one of the locales that getting WiMax soon....
More clues to a Sprint Nexus One: link.
So the Supersonic will only work on the WiMax and not on the regular 3G network as well? That's kind of stupid since WiMax is only in limited areas. So that means if you travel down the road to an area that doesn't have WiMax and have a break down you're screwed. Want the Supersonic, but I'll stick with the Hero.
No, it would have WiMax, EvDO (most likely) & 1x. It won't make sense to have WiMax only.
Also, don't forget to take into consideration that Sprint Premier customers were moved to new phones every 12 months, and that they are trying to move most customers to that plan.
it would be pointless for sprint to release two almost identical phones. It's not gonna happen.

EVO = 3g and 4g or just 4g ?

im asking this because i was in the local sprint store picking up a car charger for my wifes moment. i ask if they had a release date for the EVO he said no and 4g wont be in the area is who knows when . i said i wasunder the impression the EVO was 4g winmax but was able to use 3g as well .
well he looked stunned and if he had no idea what i was talking about .
so is it 3g and 4g or just 4g . if its just 4g i see no reason for myself to pick an evo till 4g is in my area
3g and 4g. In fact in some of the screen shots floating around you can see it connected to 3g. But regardless, it's definitely both.

According to HTC, you won't be able to use 4G and Voice at the same time due to software limitations... which definitely makes it sound like it may be a possibility with a future software update.

Eh, it is the same way that you don't get 3g and voice simultaneously on the Hero you have right now.
I guess you could always go GSM AT&T and pay twice as much for the same voice/data package. Might as well pick up an Iphone too.
Hopefully they update the software to allow for data+voice, but it isn't even a phone-deciding factor for me. The EVO has 4g+3g+1x btw.

Pcworld sucks, and so does the article. The guy says the only 4g phone is the evo. Also, doesn't mention anything about clear planning to get into lte as well. The board members resigned for antitrust issues and so they can get other investors on board.
let it die, and quit charging me the extra $10 a month.
Ok...so what does that mean for us who own a Evo?? No 4g?
If they switch to LTE will the EVO work with LTE?
No.....By the time they get LTE up and running....the evo will be obsolete and another phone with reign supreme......with LTE on board.
we will still have 4G coverage........im sure they had a contract in place for the use of their towers......comapnies just cant pull out of things such as this.
If this is the end of WiMAX then I'm getting out of my contract without the ETA. Sprint promised me 4G in my area prior to me signing up for this bull**** by the end of the year. If that ain't happening - bye bye Sprint hello Criket. Sick of this crap anyway.

Wimax has been just a transitional technology from the start. It was a great idea initially, but took too long to implement and LTE is the future. Sprint WILL utilize LTE in the future, and our precious EVOs will be long forgotten by then anyway. I feel bad for anyone that was in the longhaul for CLWR since their IPO.
If you are reading this, your gay.

bender u have no idea what you are talking about... just keep following verizons bs. There are over 500 wimax networks world wide. wimax isnt going anywhere
Clear has stated that they have begun lte trials, sprint has stated that they will upgrade when they feel they can justify the costs, and further stated that even after they begin supporting lte they will continue to support wimax, and there have been several instances where various representatives have stated sprint is conducting trials for voice+data on wimax so it may well replace the 1xrtt/evdo rev.a standard they are using now, its also been stated that the initial differences in wimax and lte was not hardware but software and it is possible to update wimax compatible devices to run on lte but i doubt they mean at lte speeds, the way they said it seemed to hint that it was more of a work around, on top of that japan is testing the next wimax standard which has a theoretical limit of 300Mb and they are barely testing at around 54Mb, and as for the whole resigning thing, they stated that due to some changes in law dan hessey and others would resign in the interest of both company's and that both sides discussed it thoroughly, but they keep most of the controlling interest, and they reserve the right to appoint anyone to replace them and other board members in the future should they feel the need to do so, Sprint will still maintain the presence that they did before resigning
If you read my post you would see that I said our EVOs would be long forgotten by then. Yes Sprint is going to expand their current 4g network based on wimax for some time, but they will eventually convert to LTE. They have built their infrastructure with the flexibility to eventually make the transition to LTE.
Try researching before attacking DRK!

[Q] IPhone to sprint?

I was at a sprint store this weekend and one of the reps. there told that sprint might get the iPhone at thebend of the year. Can anyone confirm this?
There is no official confirmation but it is a rumor that Apple is going to release an iPhone 4S at the end of August that will also be on Sprint and T-Mobile. We will see.
I personally don't think Sprint's network could handle it.
That's the rumor. It's not confirmed by any stretch of the imagination, but from Apple's standpoint, it makes a lot of sense. Apple is getting beat in the US by Android, and wants some of those Android sales. Plus, it looks like the next iPhone will have both radios (gsm/cdma), so it can release one phone for all networks. Now, whether you could unlock the phone to go from Sprint to AT&T, or Verizon will remain to be seen...assuming the rumors of a Sprint and T-Mobile iPhone are true...
God, I hope not. Sprint's 3G data is slow enough as it is, I can only imagine how an iPhone would perform on it. So unless they're planning on ramping up their 4G game or signing some major roaming agreements nationwide, might as well stick w/ an open-source Android!
Besides an android is so much more better than an iPhone. Why would you want that garbage?

The only way I'll give my evo up is if they get any kind of towers up in my area beside the junk 3g service i get now. I'm just glad I can get wifi, in just about every inch of my town that is unsecured.
I'm keeping my EVO until i have the money to switch to AT&T for the Galaxy Nexus.
Sorry that you want to go to AT&T. Been there done that. And there is a reason why I am with Sprint now.
For the people waiting for the new phones, you wont get unlimited internet since you will have to change your plan.
And yes the EVO will get ICS. HTC may even release a version for it. They just have not committed to it yet. But don't get your hopes up.

I dunno what you experienced, but everyone around me in Dallas with AT&T is pulling 5mb+ on 3G. My buddy at A&M says he's pulled even faster speeds down there. Unlimited data doesn't mean squat at less than 150kbs.
Nope. Ill probably downgrade to a 3g only phone or even VirginMobile. I use like 600MB per month cuz im always on a wifi.
HTC Evo 4G | Deck AOSP 2.3.7 | Tiamat 4.0.5-sbc
Nope. I'd start working on the ICS build myself.
And even though this isn't the case, and CM9 is all but guaranteed to show up on the Evo (as it's in the top 3 devices they have users for, iirc), I'm still planning on helping out.

This is the only differentiator Sprint has and the only thing keeping me from heading to Verizon who has significantly better coverage in my area (even with my Airvana at home).

Never happen.
CM9 or a good AOSP are our best bet. I've been giving the GS II 4G a long hard look, but a nice AOSP ICS build with 4G working would keep me happy for a while longer.
I'd dump Sense for ICS AOSP easy.
Hey, if ICS never get ported maybe we can hold out for Jelly Bean (j/k)
My EVO does everything I need it to do and I don't see any compelling reason to upgrade until sprint flips on the LTE switch in my area and pushes out a decent ICS/LTE phone. Of course by the time that happens Google will be prepping Marshmallow for release... I'm on wifi 99% of the day, though I can appreciate peeps agrivation with Sprint that do rely on mobile data. I suspect my EVO 4G will die with only about 5 minutes of Wi-Max use to it's credit. That makes me face a little.
Read today that the nexus 1 will not get an official release of ics due to hardware. Adreno 200 issues? I don't know. I'm sure there will be a port though.
