How Does Sprint Roll Out 4G? - EVO 4G General

How does Sprint go about choosing cities for 4G? Also, when will most smaller "cities" finally have 4G? A year from now? Sooner, later? Does Sprint have any publication outlining their plans? I live Columbia, SC, and right now speeds are slllowwww on 3G. So when is YOUR city getting 4G? We've all been payin for it!

good luck finding that information out. I tried to contact sprint about those exact things and got the same bs over and over and over and over (yes four times )

Slowly
I live in Greenville and someone that works for Clearwire said they have one tower in the area but that's it so far. I'm not getting my hopes up for a full rollout any time soon and after getting to use 4G recently, I don't really care anymore either. T-Mobile's 3G is faster than what I've personally seen from Sprint's 4G, my wife and I are switching this summer when our ETF drops to $50/line.

I know. They pick a random city and provide customers with very spotty coverage that barely penetrates walls

You need to carry around a ghost buster battery pack to fully utilize 4G constantly any how. The only time I use 4G is when I'm plugged into a power source or to watch one video if needed. Almost useless pretty much, I'm in a 4G area and I'm using a rom without 4G and I'm just fine.

you know...if you didnt have to toggle the radio, it would be alot better. i agree with you tmobile is kicking some ass and taking names...however our saving grace for me and us is the anymobile anytime stuff. If tmob got that going id etf it...I like sprint and my 22% discount but i could pay the same on tmobile for the 3 lines I have (since I dont have to pay a 10.00 fee per line) and I could get liek the dell streak or some other snazzy gsm phone. Really cdma I personally think is a dying technology.

man, im starting to like this thread already
I think they all go out and get drunk, then throw darts at a map. Thats why they just rolled out 4g in Jamaica and Taiwan

I wish I knew too. We just got 1 tower here in Appleton, Wisconsin. I'm not sure why we get these faster then bigger cities? Oh well, guess we will need to get an insider to leak the info.

They are doing it based on population size. I've also heard that there is a minimum population size to even be considered for 4g.

I highly doubt this is the case. There are many examples where their roll out does not follow suit

I have to agree with elegantai, that seems like the most likely answer. I'm definitely not complaining though, they just turned it on here within the last week.

I've been wondering how they decide their rollouts. I have a feeling that the commercial is spot on
But anyway, I can't wait to try some day to day use here at KU. Been to KC a couple times and was blown away by how fast it was. 4G is supposed be activated here in a month or two, so stoked.

4G Youngstown Ohio

Got a little 4G love in downtown Youngstown Ohio today for the first time. I attached a couple of images of the speed test results I got. Not the best speeds EVER but darn better then 3G. Thank You Sprint.
in Springfield here and i get nothing
Wow, didnt expect 2 ppl from NEO on here. Anyways, I dont think sprint cares much for anyone not in the three C's. I really thought we would get wimax here in akron when CLE went live.
Y-town? Nice. That's my hometown. Been in VA for about a year now though.
I tried in Campbell and got connected and got an IP. Signal quality was poor and I was only able to get 822kbps down. I couldn't even web browse because I was losing signal.
I got home on the south side and couldn't even connect to 4G.
Will we receive a text message from Sprint or any other indication when 4G is fully live here?
Went to YSU here, why the heck would sprint/clearwire waste money on 4g in Youngstown before Akron.

Obviously, because it's the home of Al Bundy.
Actually we have a thriving tech hub downtown. Makes sense to me.

I would hardly consider it "wasting money". How about because its between Cleveland and Pittsburgh and they probably want 4G between the two. Seems to make sense to me. I love how some people feel their city is more important than all the others. Akron is not that great sorry.

It seems pretty obvious which NEO area should be next in line for 4G

Don't feel bad, SE Michigan towers over any other part of michigan with half the states entire population @ ~5 million people. No 4g love for us , and sprint just turned on 4g in flint, which is the most broke ass city in the state.
I am going to have to take a trip down to toledo to scope out their new 4g. At least you lucky bastards have like what 5 or 6 major cities covered

If I had my way I would turn on the whole state. I don't get it at my house so I would have to go down to the University to use it. We are renovating a plaza downtown so I might get to use it.

I dont even live in Akron I live in Cleveland and could care less about either city.
From a business standpoint I wonder why Youngstown would get 4g before Akron. I lived in Youngstown for 4 years for college I'm not trying to trash it. If they were actually going to add 4g all the way along the turnpike I would understand that but considering clear is teetering on bankruptcy I don't figure they have the money for that. And as someone else pointed out Akron has a significantly larger population and likely a similar area to cover although I haven't looked that up.

Whole state sounds good to me but isn't happening anytime soon.
Honestly I see most metro areas of the state getting it soon. I am in Springfield which is in between Columbus & Dayton. Dayton doesn't have it yet, but Columbus does. I hope they build towers west instead of going straight to Dayton. They will probably have Dayton go live and then fill in between. I could never expect my dying city to get 4g before Dayton. Maybe Sprints big announcement is going to be live 4g everywhere. A lot of places have been popping up lately & a lot of them are smaller too.
Swyped from CM7 using XDA App
They should hit all of the cities around universities first -- the younger generation are the ones using the data the most and thus the ones that need it.
Next up should be: Akron and Kent.

anyone else fed up with Sprints lack of 4g?

love the epic, awesome phone. but being stuck in 2006 with 3G data and paying basically the same as other people are paying to the other carriers with 4g data is frustrating to say the least. Especially when I was told 4G would be in my area but it isn't anywhere within 5 miles of where I live and I don't live in the boonies. Further, even where I can get 4G, its completely unusable, just goes on for a little bit, then disconnects, then reconnects. Chat told me they were still building out the network which I seriously fail to believe.
So bottom line, has anyone had any luck with getting out of the ETF fee so they can go to a carrier that didn't lie about 4G?
I have 4G data over most of the central Ohio area. It works great, very consistent and still has better coverage than any of the other networks "4G" services.
I am tired of seeing so many thread about either not having 4G or having it and thinking it doesn't work. If you don't want to pay for it, then get a phone that doesn't have the option, then you can't complain. Sprint is STILL cheaper than any of the other networks for comparable features and options. Even with a "$10" service charge for "data".
And on that note... Doing research before jumping into a contract for something that MAY or MAY NOT work is a smart idea. I didn't even buy the phone or plan to begin with for the 4G service, I bought it for the keyboard, and the 4G was a nice addition.
I really don't know what else to say, but it seems a LOT of the Epic 4G owners are whiny babies. At least the majority of the threads leading up to the Froyo release seem to point towards that conclusion.

That's pretty easy for you to say since you already have 4G.
From what I have read, no carrier has true 4G currently. But t be honest I am pretty pleased with the speeds I get with 3G.
But it would be nice to get the speed boost that sprint is calling 4g

I'm glad its working for you, why don't you try it down here in south florida. it apparently works okay for people in Miami too. that doesn't help the people that were all told they were getting it. And before you type inane stupid things, try to think before you type. I did my research, i was told 4G was coming, and specifically to my city, yet it isn't in my city or any of the neighboring cities, plus sprint is talking about switching to LTE so thats a pretty good indication that WIMAX certainly isn't getting built out anymore in areas where it is "Live". And according to sprint south florida is live from Miami Beach to West Palm Beach. Oh except for the 80% of the parts that aren't. LOL. Oh and you didn't buy the phone for 4G, thats good for you, I bet 80% or more of the people did buy it for 4G. No one is complaining abou the price, its a great price, if 4G actually worked. and the other companies like ATT Tmobile have speeds that are at least 7 times higher than 3G sprint. so I'd consider that 4G. Verizon will be there very soon and Metro, Metro of all carriers, the dog crap carrier has 4G and its half the price of what i'm paying for sprint to lie directly to me.

Such a poor argument... They are charging the extra cash now on any smartphone. Also, have you seen a single decent android phone on sprint besides the evo, shift, or epic? They don't exist for a reason, to funnel people into 4g phones.
to the op... Yeh I'm fairly sick of not having it, it's extremely close to me but it fades all the time. Basically, just like the epic itself it was a great idea, awesome technology, but poor execution leaving it lacking.
its not that I really need it that much, its the thought of forking over 150 bucks a month for 2 phones for almost the next 2 years that is frustrating, especially when 3G is out of date now, let alone by next year.

So you are saying people shouldn't try to future proof as much as possible? Not everyone can afford to buy a new phone every year or 2 years, etc. So if you are up for a new phone, why not get a 4G phone. That way, when 4G finally comes to a city that is on Sprints list, you won't have to upgrade your hardware.
Seems like Sprint isn't upgrading/expanding their 4G network at all and Sprint customers are stuck paying just as much as other people on other carriers for the same/slower speeds. Not cool
Fed up with the lack of 4G? Absolutely. And let's not forget Sprint shafting their "Premier" customers and getting rid of yearly upgrades if your plan isn't over 89.99 or if you've been with Sprint for 10 years. If Sprint keeps it up, they will continue to lose customers.
Look. The epic 4g has 4g capability. The phone is a multimedia powerhouse with or with out 4g. 4g is nice but not a necessity. Id be frustrated if I bought th phone and was paying for 4g and not getting it.
But, I live in nyc so I knew I wasgonna get 4g sooner or later so I upgraded and a week later 4g went live
You should've gone with another carrier. Like the other guy said, do research befoe signing your wireless life away for two years.
Right no I don't even have 4g service, or even 1xrtt. I'm in wifi only right now, but idc. Because I know when I get home, I'm not gonna have any service issues. I leave 4g on while I'm home in nyc.
I was seriously considering going to t-mo because my friend with his TP2 was getting 5mb/s dl speeds and stuff, but sprint came through at the right time so I stuck with them.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I spend 1/2 of my time in NYC (which has 4g) and 1/2 the time in Long Island which does not. Although it work well when the phone is actually connected, most of the time I cannot connect to it while inside a building (even in Manhattan coverage is pretty spotty) - so when I wifi tether 4G hardly ever works. In Long Island, most of the places that I am in have wifi so lack of 4G has not been a problem personally. But I understand being upset for paying the $10 a month without ANY 4G availability in the home market.
again, did the research, read the quoted press releases and the article from the newspaper down here that listed the cities 4G was coming to. so i would be happy to go with another carrier but can't fork over ETF, and buy another phone when I already forked out 500 for these.

i don't know about you, but I don't do anything major on the phone, I do like to browse the web though and occasionally download something, like maybe a new rom for the phone thats impossible to do at 3G speeds that half the time are 300K or less. want to send a picture? how good is that going to work on 300K. So its not like 4G is just for gamers or youtube fanatics. youtube isn't even installed on my phone.
I have used WiMax in Atlanta and Nashville, and its awesome.
The Epic is Epic even without 4G, but I do wish I had it here in Louisville.

My concern is they've quit releasing any sort of expansion plans. Last year when the EVO and Epic were fresh they went on and on about which markets would be getting it. Now, nothing. If I at least knew if it was eventually coming to my area I'd be happy. Sprint has until my contract is up or VZW/ATT get LTE going to get some 4G in my area or I'll finally be switching carriers after almost 10 years. That being said, I get pretty decent 3G speeds to tide me over in the meantime.

No one lied. On the Sprint website you can look at the 4G coverage map. If that wasn't good enough, you shouldn't have jumped onboard.
Verizon and T-Mobile are aggressively building out their 4G networks. ATT has upgraded its 3G and unveils 4G this summer.
Sprint's 4G expansion has mostly halted as Clearwire teeters on the edge of bankruptcy. This 'news' was obviously not known when these phones were released with Wimax touted. The OP's criticism is valid.

Afraid to stay with Sprint and get the EVO 3D.

Wow i really do want this phone badly. But i'm just so afraid of sprints 3g coverage. I can barely watch a you tube video now. Anything that involves data sucks. What good is a phone if the coverage is horrable. Plus now they are really going to get hammered with to many people on the network for them to handle. Anyone else afraid of this?

I posted this in another thread but it applies here too. I get crappy 3G in my area and no 4G. They are so focused on bringing 3D phones but we can't even upload/stream regular vids to YouTube with their ****ty network. Why not roll out 4G in more cities and beef it up first? T-mobile is turning up the heat with 40mb in a few cities. This proves that sprint could turn it up as well if they wanted to.

I do wish that the new Evo did have the LTE radio, as rumored, but I get 5Mbps in my apartment on 4G, so I'm not going to complain too much. And I have no issues with my 3G in this area, either.
The thing of it is guys, is what are our options? AT&T-Mobile or Verizon. Both with data caps, sub-par customer service(at least from my experience with the GF's iphone) and high rates. There's really no other choice.
That being said, sprint absolutely needs to step up their network. My evo will never connect to 4G. i can be sitting in downtown Dallas, TX, right in the middle of the alleged 4G coverage area and never connect. Its worthless.
I've never had an issue with 3G. Wimax is another thing. It's mostly good but I hardly use it for anything. I'm almost always in Wifi when I want to download a big file anyway. Pretty sure they are going to eventually add LTE support to their towers since Wimax is ok for cheaply blanketing an area in Wifi-like coverage but isn't so great in big buildings and they are dependent on Clearwire's oversubscribed network.
For all the talk of "why are they worrying about 3D phones and stuff like that", they need to stay up on the flashy new handsets because that is what gets them subscribers. This is their chance to really make or break their company with the playing field narrowing soon. AT&T proved with the iPhone that folks will put up with all kinds of crap for a must-have handset so they need to keep putting out exclusives that stand out in the market in order to stay attractive to customers.
Moving to another company would cost me a lot more per month and add a data cap so I am not going anywhere soon. I used to have T-Mobile to fall back on if Sprint ever pissed me off but with them being bought up, it's time to double down on Sprint.
Since when does VZW have a data cap? And I dont mean some data cap that "may" come at some point down the road. At this point the data is still unlimited.
I live in KC, which is basically saying the Sprint HQ (overland park is a division of KC) and the service here could def be better. 3g is no too bad, unless you go to Overland Park. Which is funny, because your IN the campus, and service blows. 4g... you pretty much have to be downtown to really make it "better" than 3g. I too find it odd that t-mo can ramp up 3g speeds to topple our 4g. Co worker has tmo and he dominates me in d/l speed. Somehow for him that equates to his mytouch slide 4g being better than my evo, but then again he does have a wicked self idolize-ing issue.

Ok guys, relax. It's one of two things if you are getting slow 3g speeds.
First, Sprint is actually growing again. In some areas it's growing so much that the existing network is at capacity. It's being addressed.
Or, it's a bug with some phones on 3.70 or 3.70 based ROMs. It's being addressed in the next update (not sure if it's going to be gingerbread or not)

Not disagreeing at all with your points, but the max capacity is what the op is saying he's/she's afraid of. I've seen extremely slow coverage expansion of 4g in KC, while other carries have been going hard at it. It's doubtful they are expanding 3g much anymore since 4g is the "new baby." I like Sprint don't get me wrong, but if the op is more concerned with coverage, and the fact that we face $10 a month for 4g coverage, he may very well be better off with another carrier.
You all act like Sprint could revamp their entire network overnight if they wanted. I know for fact they are working on it, and I see signs of improvement all the time. I can get 2Mb downloads now on 3g in several locations in my city where 2-3 months ago I was lucky to get 200k. Maybe they could make people happier faster in the short term by taking shortcuts, but it looks like they're doing it right. So have patience or gtfo.

Well if it's ok in your city then that should be ok for everyone worldwide then. Try growing up before posting please.

Supposedly Sprint also has a "cap." Never seen it myself, but that "rumor" has gone around a bit.
I feel the exact same way. My 3g is terrible, I get anywhere from 200-700 MAX DOWN and about 400 UP. No 4g at all. :/

Try growing up?? WTF??? Did you not click on the link to see that I was trying to provide some hope for people that are not in a good data area?
I did not even say it was ok in my city... I said there are signs of improvement and there are places that are great. I was just trying to help people out who think the network sux everywhere and Sprint is not doing anything about it anywhere... because that is wrong. They are working on it diligently.
Perhaps my "have patience or gtfo" comment was a little rude, but that sums up the situation here. The network sux. It's getting better. If you can't wait for the improvements, complaining on xda is not going to do anything for you.

Urgh Sprint...

I was on Verizon for years and my wife talked me into a Sprint family plan. Good rates, nice phones...though sure, EVO looks tight, nice specs and is a fantastic phone. My wife purchased an epic 4G. Both are rooted and running very nice programs. My problem is the data is 100% garbage compared to Verizon in every way. I am located in Warner Robins, GA and if it wasn't for WiFi i would be lost. My friend purchased a Thunderbolt I rooted for him and in the same area side by side he was getting 2.5mb dl speed and I was barely at 800kb. What gives? Do they not make enough to give good coverage? I avg 300kb at best. Some place are better but never above 1.3mb! Why can a company sell such appealing phones and yet have such terrible data? Anyone else feel this way? I get cell service and can send texts but working at Robins afb and the abysmal signal is really making me want to jump ship. Verizon doesn't have the phones I want though. I like HTC. I have for many years. HTC, you make a kick ass product, just wish you would start using a kick ass carrier or Sprint start actually putting money into their Damn network and bang some towers out around here. Grrrr

Lol yeah I'm in Atl(gwinnett county) and I get ok speeds. Even 4g at times but I usually stick to my wifi when available to save battery. I'd say chock it up to being in the sticks out in Warner robins lol jk. Data speeds arnt the greatest but its worth having the phone due massive amounts of dev support. The thunderbolt is a great phone though. Pretty much a cousin of the evo execpt they get bent over and raw dogged for pricing compared to sprint. Just my opinion though
Verizon is absurdly overpriced...but they deliver the goods! Guess that's what u get for cheaper service, just that! Cheaper service. If they would drop better data coverage I could handler it better
I wish I could 300... most of the time it is around 50. Been like this for a year in this area.

Not the case with cheaper service, Thats what you get for not living in a major city?
Los Angeles is nicely blanketed with wimax - So we are paying less than verizon customers here and getting around 8mb down on 4G and average 700k on 3G, good enough for me
Sprint gives me around 100-400kbps down depending on the time of day.

O come on LA really there's only a few Citys (12~20)on Earth that compare to LA.
In WI 3G sucks ass 100k most of the time. To me its like having a flashback to the netzero & free aol days on a 56k modem lol. I left sprint years ago because they sucked in WI and then I was in Ohio with "No Bar" went to Verizon for 6 years. Then last fall I wanted an Epic so I moved back to Sprint (back in WI) and I found out that they did not do one single thing to upgrade there network that an end user would see as to data speeds. Booooooooooooooooo! Sprint :-(

Yeah i know they have great service....for only a few damn places! Lol feel like a t mobile customer
I never get over 200k 50-70% of the time.
Yeah i def hear ya.... Fricken speeds suck here in Green Bay. Idk what it is, but for the last week I've only been getting 500kb download speed. Before that i could hit like 1.2 mb... I've been to lazy to call and ***** and they would just have me do everything i have done already.... Speed fix and pri update etc... Def not worth the price in switching for me tho

Sprint has no cash to improve this stuff really, LTE tests, clearwire hell... yeah it's going to be bumpy for a while.

i realize that they aren't as big as Verizon or ATT, but come on... their 3g speed is just pathetic. and it's only going to get worse if they just keep adding better and better phones to their network, which is already on it's knees.

All I heard was how sprints network is getting fast and blah blah blah but has anyone seen speeds that are actually faster? Mid Ga doesn't seem any better. I looked at the sight and see upgrades being done but I can't tell at all. Am I crazy or am I getting ransacked

Same place. They show upgrades happening but I don't see it. Its frustrating. I have 6 towers near me and get pathetic to OK coverage on base, but off bade its pretty good. Problem is I used to be on Verizon and they are strong in my area. I hate to switch back but I been w spring almost 2 years now, my wife has been w them 7 years. I am pretty close to cancelling this and moving on. I really like sprints line of phones but w 3 lines, I feel I can do better unless they have real changes they are making. I am holding on to the hold of the 800mhz I have seen floating around and was under the impression that that's what network vision was bringing me. Now 5 months after talk of it...still no great data. When everyone on Verizon is sucking data slam up. A consistent 1mb where ever I go isn't extreme to me when that's pretty much how Verizon treated me years ago. Now all my Verizon friends at seeing 2+mb
Same here...they upgrade some sites but nothing gets better. Even tech support said they upgraded one tower and was able to give me details. Still sub 100 kilobit speeds from this tower.
Well according to sprint next month I should have better service... needless to say if I dont see any difference then I'm gone cause I work 50+ hours a week and have no service wat so ever so if no improve bye bye sprint

Where I live it's a struggle to get over 100 kbit on the 3g and 1 mbit on the 4g when it's available but It is better than AT&T.
Sprint unlimited is a joke, it's like offering unlimited mileage on an auto lease and then you find out it's a yugo that can't go much faster than 1 mph.
I can't break 1 gig a month because the data rates are so slow.
My plan is to drop sprint when my contract is up. You can sign a new contact and get cheaper prices on high end phones.
Wow 100kb? Yuck, I would have left them long ago. Hell, I roam at 130kb! I know sorta because I work on an air force base and in some spots data is non existent. I may ride it out until June...if it isn't happening, I have to leave sprint. Too bad they don't read forums haha. Hurry up Sprint! Stop buying iPhones and buy some damn towers!

I noticed my 4g signal ha become stronger over the past six months. This week I found I no longer lose 4g in the backroom at work and my 3g has started working a tad more in areas there was once none. Overall speed is the same just more coverage.

That's positive. Hopefully something will come to my area soon . I was fishing for feedback. I do like sprints price. And have always had voice coverage, hopefully data coverage expands here
Its all about location. Sprint service isn't that bad guys.... I get great service in Omaha, NE .. however... 4g is virtually non-existent, which is retarded considering im required to pay for it. I have had verizon, alltel (when it existed), StraightTalk, AT&T.... I would say Sprint and StraightTalk (YES STRAIGHT TALK) provided the best service for me in terms of dropped calls and data. AT&T is a joke.
When I was using straight talk I had their nokia smart phone....if I recall correctly.... im pretty sure their 3g service ran off verizon towers, im not sure though.
A tower was marked recently as having recieved a data speed upgrade within the past 6 months near my niece's high school. We were there for a basketball game, 6pm to about 8pm at night on thursday. I did a speed test and saw 1200kbps. I was impressed. By my house it is still 200-300kbps at times dipping down to less than 100 or in the middle of the night peaking around 450.
From the looks of things the upgrades should be heading towards towers in my area soon. I am curious to see how it goes, as I would love to get better 3g speeds. I have some crappy 4g right now but its so spotty and the battery drain so significant 4g is just pointless to me.
Is there a site like this for Verizon? In case someone would like to (hypothetically) change prl's and force roam to Verizon in certain areas? It would be handy to know.

3G is gotten lil better.
Better where I am at. Nothing like what I would like but better.... on the funny side, My brother is staying with us and he has Verizon, talk about slow service in this area. You can cry and ***** all you want, all carriers will have problems. Why not over pay for them. lol
Mines slower. After the EL30 update. Modem issues thou. I hope not, I like the latest and greatest.
I live in Los Angeles. I've noticed my 4g improve in reliability, but decrease in speed.
My 3g is abysmal. Like, almost worthless. Once in a blue moon I'll get 200+ kb/s, but usually it is sub 100.
Calls/texts are generally fine though.

I'm not seeing a huge problem with Sprint, I did 3 tests like this and they all came out roughly this fast. I live in the Twin Cities in Minnesota and I can stream Pandora without any interruptions back and forth from my 40 min commute. When I head to my dads place (its 3 hours away in the middle of nowhere) I can still stream Pandora basically skipless the whole way. I hardly ever use 4g though since its a battery suck and overkill 99% of the time, and it doesn't reach into my apartment . I also don't roam very often, automatic system select rarely works with data without some fiddling. I only use roaming at my dad's house since verizon is the only provider out there. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with Sprint
