EVO not coming to UK/Europe - how effed is that?! - EVO 4G General

Ok, so it's apparently "confirmed" from an HTC rep that this phone isn't coming to the UK shores
http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2010/03/24/htc-evo-4g-next-gen-network-hopes-dashed/
How fuct is that?? I would have bet the farm that this phone would have been a sure seller.
Really baffled by this, if true...

I'm sure there will be a Euro or UK version of something "very similar."
I mean, this phone is basically an HD2 on speed, so it wouldn't surprise me if HTC made a GSM version of the EVO (probably sans WiMax since it's not popular over there yet, iirc.)

Exactly what I was thinking - had it not been for Winmo, I think the HD2 would have been a much better seller.
And now the EVO which is, as you say, a super-charged HD2 with Android and 8mp camera..
I just cannot see the marketing sense in NOT bringing it out over here in the UK (and Europe).
Unless they have some different version of it ready to drop on us under a different name "sans 4g"..

It wil come to europe, although ofcourse a modified version. Earlier specs of supersonic have confirmed a GSM version. Why it came to the US first, I don't know. Most of the time they first release a European version and then move on to the US. Perhaps HTC's brand-building in the US has been noticed and Sprint went ahead to discuss a deal for this phone. Non the less it could also be that the announcement coincided with an earlier event in the US, than one that is in the EU. I do remember how many rumors there where about a US release of the HD2 yes/no. Well, we all know now that did happen.

Don´t worry for that, it will come, as stated above, in a different flavour but sure you´ll have it
Remember this strategy of giving the "privilege" some time to Europe and some times to America of having it first

I suggest they make a "World" launch this time

Hey europe had the HTC HD and it wasnt released over here, but afer time it came but. Howw is that different?

For once us Americans get the upper hand on the cell phone wait game. I'm sure you guys will get the same phone a few months later.

I hope so. Want to buy the Evo... Cant stay with hd2 anymore

my concern is not whether we get it first, but whether we get it at all.

And if we do, then with a proper 4G. We here don't have wimax about 2-3 years already. It's almost dead. What we do have is 4G(although so little it doesn't almost count yet)
E: It got me a bit suspicious, and i discovered that they can label almost any technology providing 100M link as 4G.

Well, as an American who's been living in Germany the past 8 years, I can honestly say that
Europe definetely get more perks when it comes to phones. It doesn't bother me that it will come to the states first. I just hope that it comes here AT ALL.
And in regards to it being the...once again...iPhone Killer....it won't happen. As much as I DESPISE Apple, you can bet ur ass that Steve Jobs will be presenting SOME SICK STUFF
when the new iPhone drops.
Keep in mind guys..Google doesn't want to kill the iPhone. Google LOVES the iPhone.
It puts their search engine, maps, and services in the hands of 40 million people.
As long as they still have market share, and know that most people will search online
with Google, they could care less what smartphone your using.
That said.I'm sure in terms of smartphone market share, that they will be right even with
Apple in the coming years. But even then, the iPhone will be important for Google.
That is unless of course Steve Jobs does something really stupid and bans Google use
somehow on the iPhone.
Then Google will kill it And let's not forget..as awesome as EVO will be (God I want that
damn phone) Nexus 2 could also have the potential to DEVESTATE the new iPhone if
marketed properly this time.
Sry for the typos..posting from my G1 right now

Specs are sparse right now but essentially it's the HD with WiMAX.
HTC really does seem to have quite a lot up its sleeves!
"Out of absolutely nowhere comes HTC's first WiMAX-enabled handset, the sure-to-be-delightful T8290. Reportedly, this bugger packs a 3.8-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, 802.11g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, GSM and WiMAX radios and is expected to launch soon on Russia's Yota. Granted, we can't take this as hard truth or anything quite yet, but the images that reside in the read link are more than convincing."
Engadget.
Anyone has more info?
More pics here:
http://nedge2k.com/blog/exclusive-htcs-first-wimax-device/
I didn't know what WiMax was...so I called on my friend Google and this is what I found:
"WiMAX, an approximate acronym of Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology that provides for the wireless transmission of data in a variety of ways, ranging from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular-type access. The technology provides broadband speed without the need for cables. The technology is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard (also called WirelessMAN).
Currently, Pakistan has the largest fully functional WiMAX network in the world.[2] Wateen Telecom installed the network (with an initial rollout in seventeen cities) throughout Pakistan using Motorola hardware."
That's all good and dandy, but from what I understand this basically just means a phone with broadband speeds. I thought HSDPA was the closest thing to broadband speed.
And doesn't it also mean that if your current service provider doesn't have WiMax service, your phone is good for nothing?
If anybody can explain better what exactly WiMax is, please do. thanks.
(oh by the way, I think the device is pretty ugly, looks like that LG Prada phone...since when HTC went from trend setters to trend copycats?)
wow, that better be real

HSDPA is nowhere close to WiMax, if you went to the actual read link, you can see one of the pictuers shows the connection speed is 14 Mbps (or something like that). HSDPA's THEORETICAL max speed is only 7.2 Mbps.
I believe WiMax's theoretical speed is somewhere around 65Mbps. but 1. i dont' think the carrier are willing to implement that fast. 2. the phone can't handle that fast, probably will blow up from over heating. 3. the Mobile OS doesn't have the transport layer to support that speed.
the other difference is WiMax's range is 30 miles radius, though not at top speed of course. this would save the carrier LOTS of money on cell towers, and we would have lots more coverage (that's highspeed coverage).
I'm no expert on this matter, those are what i know
Come on US Carriers get off your asses!

WiMAX is considered pre-4G/LTE (where UMTS is 3G, and HSDPA is 3.5G). The theoretical bandwidth limit is 70Mbps (both up/down), but practical implementation is about 20Mbps (so the 14Mbps is quite reasonable).
Sprint has begun WiMAX trials in the US (early reports show about 11Mbps to-the-handset). Of course many other countries are also moving to WiMAX. Korea is pursuing its own similar standard with WiBro, as are European carriers with HiperMAN, and Japan's DoCoMo is also developing its own new network.
Just my opinion: WiMAX is definitely an important upgrade to HSPA networks, since 10Mbps+ is essentially the same speed as most hardwired broadband. But the current split between WiMAX/WiBro/HiperMAN/etc is another big step away from the beauty of GSM (which is, for the most part, that it's globally interoperable). But not much can be done about that since 4G/LTE still hasn't been standardized. So for now it's a good upgrade/competitor to UMTS, but certainly not a perfect solution. Then again, if you don't travel much, WiMAX could be great.
As for IrDA, it's actually still popular in many countries where its usage varies culturally. For instance, in Japan it's used extensively as a social tool for exchanging information (especially extended information that regular vCards don't offer). Bluetooth is technically more flexible, but the extra hurdles of searching and pairing isn't appealing at all.
Other thoughts about the T8290: I don't think I saw a 3.5mm jack!!!
I don´t want to sound negative at all
But if you don´t have a WIMAX in your country or area (Like me) this device won´t be any better in any aspect form HD. starting with design
Cheers to all
But its meant to hit on markets with WiMAX...many countries have it,big countries with alot of customers for this type of product...and if HTC (as normally does...) overpowers all competition in this area(WiMAX devices),it will be a killer product with lots of sales...so,i dont understand why are you guys trying to compare it with HD...different type of customers.
at least Brazil,Russia and Japan have already skipped the test phase(with great sucess) and are now implementing it all over the territory.
In the U.S. the response was somewhat negative, but its always hard to implement new communications technology in there,so...not relevant.
Not to mention 3rd world countries, where WiMAX will hit hard due to low cost implementation.
It´s not a comparative, it´s just my point of view
Where I live government does not have WIMAX on their plans, not even on their minds, so in my case WIMAX is not something to consider right now (At least in 5 years)
So you lucky WIMAX countries, it´s something to consider!
Meantime I´ll go for HD...

apparently this phone is codename Quartz. I'm compiling a wiki on this phone if anyone is interested.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC T8290 Quartz
Wiki would be nice. In Holland there is also small WiMax support and theyre working on expanding it.
I do wonder why HTC would decide to generate such a huge amount of different phones at practically the same time. I'm not an iPhone fan by a mile, but what Apple does understand is that it is much more effective to keep improving existing models rather than producing a thousand different ones for each and every audience. Why does the T8290 need to be a completely different design ... again?! Especially since its main different feature is only WiMax reception.

The iPhone is just one phone and only appeals to a small market (and why would any waste a cent on it? ) HTC make many different phones, more phones = more selection = more customers.

Bought HTC Max4G three weeks ago

Hello, everybody. Since there's no forum for this 4G new phone - a twin of Blackstone , I hope you don't mind me joining you...
I just posted some photos here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=457037
But my knowledge in WinMo is very limited-- I was a UIQ guy.
I really appreciate it if anyone can help me with my question here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=461910
Thank you very much!
Your questions isn't specific toHTC Touch HD (4G) at all, its just a general windows mobile issue. So you shouldn't ask in this forum, and creating two threads for the same topic isn't fine as well.
But I think you questions get answered in the other thread.
Thank you, johnpatcher. That was just my first post. I do have more questions (as a new user of WinMo) to post later. After all, writing in English takes much time for me.
On the other hand, I'm not sure if any one can answer my questions specific to Max4G, since it is not for sale outside Russia, yet.
But it'll be interesting to compare it with HD, won't it?
p.s. I posted some questions on a Russian forum, however, I didn't find such good forum there compared to xda-developers.
HTC Max4G vs HTC HD
some simple comparison by a WinMo newbie:
Advantages of Max4G over HD
1. supports 4G WiMax
2. 1500mAh battery (HD: 1350)
3. built in 8GB memory (HD: 512MB ROM)
4. supports TV-Out (HD: none)
5. (disputable) looks better
Disadvantages of Max4G to HD
1. no 3.5mm audio jack
2. doesn't support 3G (no HSDPA/WCDMA)
3. minimum accessories in the kit, no soft case, microSD
4. costs 1050 USD in Moscow (sorry I wrote an incorrect price in another post)
--- however, this price is regarded low in Moscow provided the price for Touch Pro is 1300 USD there.
5. sports 3.2 megapixel camera (HD: 5.0 megapixel)
--- but this is an advantage for me, since I think 2.0 mega is enough for such small lense. Extra pixels don't improve the quality of photos at all; mostly they just waste more memory.
Equals
1. no flash for camera
2. gorgeous 3.8" display
3. expansion slot microSD
4. no GPS software
5. both support GPRS, EDGE, WiFi
6. equivalent CPU (I guess?)
I always heard that WinMo has great choices of software applications, but so far I cannot find the text input/keyboard for Chinese and Japanese languages.
The only program I heard is CE-Star, which is said to be perfect for X1. But I downloaded the trial version from the official website, and it caused serious crash on my Max4G Could it be due to the Russian interface on Max...??
Any help is greatly appreciated.
The file downloaded from the following link works fine for Traditional Chinese input on my wife's diamond:

Without her I can't tell you which one is the one she uses, buty I am sure it will make more sense to you then me.
Thank you so much for sharing the Studio Kuma.
I was in ecstasy to know that website, until.....
until I find the sentence at the system requirement: "This software doesn't work with phones after HTC Touch"
But thanks anyway!

The diamond actually was published after the Touch, wasn't it ? So maybe just give it a try.
Perhaps being unable to read Chinese meant being brave enough to install it on diamond and pressing ok wherever I saw it. All I can say is it has very good integration on Diamond. It works fine on sms, email and messenger so far I had no complaint from her. I am not sure if the resolution difference would be an issue. It works perfect on my case. Also, never tested on official rom as well but i guess should be ok.
WiMax in Russia
Right now the 4G WiMax network is only functioning in two Russian cities: Saint Petersburg & Moscow. Last time when I was there, the 4G coverage was not satisfactory. I guess that is why Yota is free of charge so far, and it'll begin to charge around 50USD/month - unlimited access - after 31 March 2009 when the company Scartel promises to complete most of the construction.
(Don't you think 50USD is too expensive only for 4G service? The Moscow MTS GSM charges me about 70USD/month; that's 120USD totally. )
With that unlimited 4G access, Scartel says you can listen to tons of free music and watch tens of TV channels -- almost useless for me personally.
After booting up a new Max4G device, you have to download the Yota Center program in order to start up its service. But you need at first to find WiFi or spend a whole hour on downloading it via GPRS. Why couldn't they just save the program in the Max4G CDROM?
I was located in Moscow downtown. The 4G signal was very weak. The signal (RSSI) was around -90dB and the quality (CINR) was 9dB averagely.
However, it dropped to zero if you walk away from the window. That is, it was only usable on the road -- but I did not want to use a phone on a December Moscow street at all! ...So I gave up and switched to WiFi.
Some Russian guy told me he enjoys the high speed music channel when driving. It's also said the Yota network works better in Saint Petersburg.
My preliminary conclusion is, so far it's pain to use WiMax. Let's wait until January 2009 and I'll share my experience again.
You are right. If it works fine on a Diamond, there's a chance it works on Max4G, too.
I'll install the Spb Backup before trying the StudioKuma, in case it fails.
Hi again,
Out of curiosity, tested on my HD and here are the screenshots. I have no clue about what I might have input though.
Hope it helps.
You're lucky. It's very goos phone but need time to explore it. iPhone (T-Mobile G1) was same story, but after many hours hard work, cracking, experiments it's now perfect. HTC Max 4G is specially made for Yota, and truly hard locked to it. Need some jailbreak , custom WWE ROM, Hard SPL etc.

On my Max it's written QUAR100
Today I got on my hand 3 phones altogether: Max4G, HD and a white Diamond.
I confirm that the batteries for Max & HD are completely different in dimension. The battery for Max is much larger.
When holding Max & HD side by side, you feel Max is slightly larger and thicker, and you understand that Max has to be "square" to keep its size reasonably slim.
I took some pictures by my SE P1i, but it was too dim and the result was horrible. Anyway, I'll post them up here later.
Sorry the following pics were poorly shot - by a phone camera in a dim room.
This picture shows that the batteries for HD and Max4G are not interchangeable.

I could do with a bit more ram (only has 256/512 rom).
But I like the add on projector. Ideal for keeping in your laptop bag and plugging on to the phone when you want to.
What do you guys think?

I like the phone, without the projector. With LG, I won't have to pay HTC tax, which seems ludicrious, with HTC Diamond (1)'s costing more than an X1.
I think its kinda cool, but in all reality the only thing cool about this phone is the projector.
How would that projector actually work? By using native app or projecting device screen (clone mode) ?

I'd guess its clone mode, so you could use it for presentations etc.
I would imagine that the LG build quality means that the keyboard works without the iiiiiii oooooooo etc, and it doesn't crack down the sides if you look at it
I would rather have a better camera than the fingerprint reader (had one on a M900, sold it within a week) but all in all it ticks the right boxes for me.

Rans,
The only issue is firmware... LG sucks at software - I used an LG Arena, it was slow and clunky.
Hopefully there'd be chefs willing to cook for it.

Should'nt be a problem since its a WM 6.5 Device.
LG only had Problems with there on lousy software.
I think LG will not install any "addons" that will make that phone really crapy.
With Windows Phone they have a good base at least.
Btw. i'm missing infos about a G-Sensor.
If there is one, it would really be an alternative to the X2
Yes it does have orentation sensor

I just picked up a Telus LG IQ (this is the Canadian version of the eXpo) and it does change orientation based on how you hold it..in some apps...for instance Internet explorer will change to landscape if you turn the phone on its side.
YES please chefs!

Although you brought that with a lot of fervor, I don't see any evidence.
I wouldn't be too surprised if a few ROMs for other WM phones are around the forums - people from other sites come and share here too.
Fact remains, there won't be an LG eXpo section on XDA, as it's not an HTC manufactured phone, unless the XDA administrator changes the rules.
You know I'm right and I know I'm right - lets just stop messing about.
It's a pity this site is so linked to HTC and not windows mobile phones in general. The ability to run Microsoft products on various hardware manufacturers equipment gave it the advantage in the popularity stakes. If they had stuck with a single manufacturer like IBM I'd be typing this (and you would probably be viewing this) on a mac.
The original XDA was a ground breaking piece of kit, and it sporned this site, but there's some great WM phones out there and I'm sure that some of the software they have could be ported to HTC's devices.
Maybe it's time for the mods to open up this site to all WM devices and take the site to the next level, rather than a blinkered approach to a single hardware manufacturer.
Whats your opinion Mods?
Rans,
I don't think you'll reach a lot of mods by posting in this topic - for that you should go to the general XDA forums, or maybe ideas and suggestions.
However, without ever having browsed those forum sections, I can tell you that this must've been suggested thousands of times already.
I think one of the main problems is the scope. Earlier on, HTC was the main WM phone manufacturer. Now there's so many companies out there doing the same..
Even HTC has way too many WM phones already (try looking for one in the main forum, it's a huge list). If we'd add all other WM phones, the forum would get a mile long.

I agree that it seems pretty sweet. Not flashy, but great speed and features - like what we all wish the x1 could have been. I hope the camera and video recording are good. I wish they'd sell an add-on xenon flash in addition to that projector.

Sorry to be the guy that challenges what other people say but there is a dedicated sony ericcson X1 section, so I am assuming that other devices are eligible. I think its a litttle important to mention that unlike the rest of the world, this is the first US phone to drop with a QSD, I am thinking of getting one myself, but will wait to see if ROMs are getting cooked as a stock device will not do.
True, but HTC made X1.

Anyone Considering Evo.....(you better be) should check this out...

ICD Gemini Tablet
Gemini has beautiful 11.2" screen, compared to iPad’s 9.7" – a whole 1.5" larger diagonally. This gives us 8.38 square inches of extra viewing space to ogle at.
But this is just the beginning. Gemini specs include:
an ultra-fast dual core nVidia Tegra 2 1GHz CPU
a 3G connection with voice, SMS, and MMS support
2 cameras – 5MP autofocus on the back and 2MP fixed focus on the front – hey, that’s way more than even my desktop’s webcam has!
a GPS – the iPad doesn’t have any
a user replaceable 40Wh battery compared to iPad’s 25Wh one
an SD card reader
support for playing 1080P video
a promise to support Adobe Flash which is not too shocking considering this is an Android platform
dual speakers AND dual microphones for noise cancellation
FM radio
USB ports – iPad doesn’t even have any
a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, infrared
Android (of course, why else would we talk about it here?)
11.8" x 7.5" x 6" dimensions
If you dont know everything about the EVO then slap yourself now

is there a TL;DR version?
The Evo is a very interesting device. For sure when it comes time to upgrade it'll be my device of choice.
I'm definitely not getting the EVO. I might if it didnt have Sense UI but its just not worth all that money. My next phone is gonna be the Nexus... and it has a trackball too.

TL;DR : ICD Gemini Tablet > iPad; HTC EVO > *
These two devices are not even remotely the same. Can you imagine holding something larger than an iPad up to your face to make phone calls?
One is a phone, one is not. Why the comparison?
Epic GIF though.
I need a phone with computer like abilities more than a computer with phone like abilities. The Gemini is too big to just carry around everywhere you go.

Even though the Gemini is pretty cool device... when I want to purchase a mobile device... I'm going to look for a mobile device, not a tablet. Even if it can make phone calls and such... it isn't portable and it no longer becomes a feasible mobile device in my eyes.
The Evo has large enough screen, especially at 4.3"... it'll be the biggest screen in the mobile/smart phone scene. So, with that instead, I still plan on getting the Evo over any device as of right now.

When you decided to put the "vs" in there. you turned it into a comparison. Along with deciding between the two. They're two completely different devices, that's the same as deciding between a laptop and a phone. Calling capabilities doesn't make it a phone since you can technically make calls from your home pc or laptop. Both great devices, but not sure why you'd choose one over the other. If it's a phone you need, evo, if it's a tablet you want, gemini. simple

WIND is way worth it ($40 all you can eat), at least in the GTA area
not sure how is the reception over around your area, but it should definitely considered.
I was on FIDO until just a couple of weeks ago, heck i still need to cancel my FIDO account, but the plan was simply too sweet to resist so i made the jump
..and no i definitely did not switch carrier because of the phone, it's rather the other way around.
After being "forced" to WIND (peer pressure), no, not really, i'm paying at least $60 less with 2 PHONES with ALL features, than 2 phones on FIDO with LESS options, and DATA only in 1 phone, it'd have been stupid not to take the WIND plan
but that was my best and worst move at the same time.
I totally forgot about the PHONEs that i can use on an AWS network, you need both 1700+2100 to properly get 3G, it wont work if you only have 1 band
So, i was screwed in that regard, I really like my SGS even with all its flaws it still beats the SNS
They are yes essentially the same phone with minor differences, yet the one that is killing me the most is the lack of microSD support, and no MKV, DivX, AVI support on hardware
yes 2.3 is nice, but it's more buggy than 2.2
yes it has flash for the camera, but it's totally useless for outdoor pictures, it might be okay if you are in a party room
yes it has NFC, but... no one in America is using it at all, this new feature it is completely wasted, until some form of Advertising Media Marketing, makes use of them, and make Movie Posters interactive, or until supermarket starts tagging their boxes and cans with NFC tags to scan the prices... which basically means, it's absolutely useless, as there will be no retailers willing to spend that kind of money on useless electronic tags, when the good old bar code is so much more efficient.
i'll trade NFC over microSD any time.
playing movies, animes, foreign films with subtitles and without Hardware decoding on the SNS really sucks, performance and video quality wise
oh by the way no hardware support for 720p on the SNS
same mic recording audio gain bug found on the SGS, in the SNS
GPS works on the SNS, but the same i'll say about the SGS, never had any problem with the GPS on the SGS
battery life on the SNS is better than the SGS, even tough it uses a crappier battery
very little accessories available for the SNS on ebay, etc
LauncherPRO has always been my main launcher, don't like stock android, and totally despise TWlauncher
what i miss the most in the SNS that was also build in in SGS is the front facing chat phone calls, yes the SNS has FFC, but it has no support to use FFC for normal phone calls
it only works via 3rd party apps like Fring, Yahoo, Tango, etc.... which totally kills the point of having a FFC for regular phone calls
that was possible in the SGS
... there are alot more i can go on for, but those are the basic main issues that annoys the most, coming from a SGS experience

thank you gamer , nice review .. thumbs up
i m cooo with my sgs
The SGS does support UMTS video calls (what you call normal phone call) but Bell charges an extra $5/month for it so nobody has it. Plus, who can you call with that feature? Your other friend with a SGS?
no one said SGS doesn't
it is the SNS that is missing the stock video dialer to use that feature
and you can call anyone with a video chat capable phone, it doesn't need to be SGS
the old "dumb" phones (nokia, samsung, LG) that are video capable works as well
yeah, as long as they pay $5/month
I think this technology was popular in Japan but I have never seen someone using it in Canada
Wind Mobile
Thanks for the reply AllGamer.
I find myself in EXACTLY the same situation as you! Haha. I live in Edmonton and I just HAD to try out this $40 all you can eat plan from wind. I've got an i9000m unlocked and on Rogers and I love it. The GPS is it's main flaw though, it's pretty terrible and sure I get pissed at it when I try and use it, but it's not a big enough deal for me to want a new phone right now. I also hate TouchWizz and use ADW exclusively.
Anyway, I bought this cheap Alcatel with the $40 plan from wind here to try out their network. I figure if I don't like it I can return the phone and just be out the one month plan fee, and if I do like it I can use the phone in the interim until I get an AWS compatible phone. I just had to jump on it now because the $40 Holiday Miracle plan expires tomorrow.
I've only had the phone half the day now, and the reception doesn't seem too bad. I'll have to move around the city and stuff a lot more to get a real sample though. If Wind is able to deliver I should be able to save at least %50 every month once I ditch my Rogers plan.
I ran some speed tests here at work and I didn't really care for the results though. This is the only place I've tested, so it could be this tower or something, I'll have to test more to know for sure. Anyway, I'm getting:
Rogers w/GT-i9000m:
Down - Up
1884 - 1148
2944 - 1237
2567 - 1244
3291 - 1242
*Wind w/OT-981A:
Down - Up
1749 - 159
1280 - 156
1575 - 159
1529 - 159
I can live with 1.5Mpbs down, that's not to bad, but the upload is terrible! I called customer support to ask if they had some sort of upload cap in place, but they said they've never heard anything like that. I'll try some other places around the city and post back the results.
I really want to like Wind, or more, my wallet really likes to want Wind XD
Anyway, I kind of got off topic here, the reason I asked the initial question is because if I do move to wind I'll have to part with my SGS. The SNS seems like the logical way to go, but I've heard bad things about the quality control and as you know, living in Canada, we can't exactly easily exchange it at Best Buy.
I don't think the MicroSD would be a huge deal, but I don't really like not having it either. I agree, the multimedia support would be a pain to give up. If Samsung did one thing right, it's the great codec support on the SGS. As for the rest of TW and the crippled samsungafied Google apps... they can go.
One of the reasons I really liked the SGS was the multimedia support, but I found I didn't really use it. One of the reasons is all my stuff is in 720 MKV and while the SGS can play those files locally, Allshare is incapable of streaming anything in an MKV container. This is a huge drag and as a result I never gave it much use. The 720p camera recording is also nice but again, I have no way of outputting 720p. It would be nice if it had mHDMI out, but now I'm just dreaming XD. BTW, does the SNS support video out through composite like the SGS?
I already have a pretty good feel of what I'm getting into if I get a SNS, but I like hearing real world things from users. You can't tell everything from specs, it really is about the experience. My biggest fear is getting a defective one. Pop into the SNS forums here on XDA and it becomes apparent quite quickly that there are problems with a lot of them.
*Update: I just noticed the the Android SpeedTest.net app is not pulling the Wind phone's location properly. My SGS on Rogers is testing with a server right here in Edmonton. The Alcatel is trying to use a server in... Virginia . That could certainly lead to some extra latency XD. Edmonton isn't available in the server list, so I'll try and find a more reliable way of comparing. Perhaps a different app will let me manually input a server IP to test with.
Do you find Wind's Fair Usage Policy unfair? Isn't unlimited, unlimited, not capped?

re: wind fair usage policy
yes, it's not really unlimited data, it's 5 GB
they won't really cap you off if you go over, i think they do it on a case by case basis, as in they'll look at the ports you have been using the most, and if any of those falls into File sharing then they will most likely cap you

re: speedtest.net
in the GTA i constantly get 2.8 Mbps down, and 800 Kbps up in many areas of the city
very decent if you ask me
same results using both SNS and XT720

yes, it is supported, and using the same cable as the SGS (Nokia something something, forgot model #)

is very hard to say, i got lucky i guess
if you don't want to run the risk, go to your local phone shops, usually those chinese or indian cell phone stores in the malls sells them at a bit high ($700-$800) but at least you can check out the phone in person, and not have to run the risk of buying it from Best Buy USA
Wind Mobile in Edmonton
Yes, no one's unlimited plan is ever unlimited, but 5GB is pretty decent if you ask me. The cap doesn't seem like it would really hurt though, as I can't get uploads higher than 0.15Mbps anyway.
I found out what was going on with the speed test. Apparently Wind's data access comes from Ontario, and SpeedTest.net determines where you are based on IP location. If you connect with WiFi it will give you a server in your area, then you can just switch to 3G and complete the test with that server. I did this and tested with an Edmonton server... 1.75Mbps down and 0.14 up. About the same. Again, respectable download, abysmal upload.
I still need to run speed tests in more areas, but this part of the city is where I live and work, so it matters the most to me. I can't help but feel there is a cap here. I never get more or less than 0.15Mpbs up.
Another issue I've seen is my data just cutting out. I'll have full bars but just no 3G access. Sometimes a power cycle brings it back, sometimes I just have to wait. Seems to only happen when I'm at home though, so it must be something wrong with the AP i'm near.
A Google search shows I'm not alone in this upload problem. A shame
in the case of WIND mobile i switched more due their unlimited talk plans, and unlimited long distance, and unlimited word wide SMS, also all their HOME ZONES in different Cities that attracted me the most
the unlimited internet was just the cherry on top of the icing
on FIDO/ROGERS i was paying just about the same for the 6 GB data package
so i might be 1 GB down from data, but i gained a lot more on the useful stuff

Absolutely, I agree. I have a 500MB plan and I never go over 175Mb/month. My only problem is when a company says one thing and the fine print says another.
I would just like a little honesty in corporate policies.
my average is aprox 3 GB a month
A bit unrelated but cud anyone help
I have the Motorola Xt720 that Wind provides, but now i see they have the newer Samsung Nexus S, and i'm considering swapping phones, but should I?
I have looked at the pros and cons, but the 2 phones are better and worse than each other on different fields and to me seem to balance out oddly. like the xt720 has sd card while the SNS doesn't but has a significantly bigger internal memory, which means more apps and stuff, i find that on my moto that i constantly run low in internal memory due to too many apps. SNS runs 2.3 and the xt720 runs 2.1; however, if i root my xt720 i could update it to 2.2 (which i hear is less glitcher than 2.3), but I'd void my warranty. the camera on the xt720 is much better, not sure about the video though. The SNS i see covers more video format though, and seems to have a longer battery life. I find myself having to constantly charge my Motorola if i use it moderately and it easily over-heats which leads to more battery consumption. but that SD card thing for the SNS is the real con for me, i have a few vidoes, but I am heavy on music. But at the same time i want more apps...
So essentially I have 3 choices:
-Keep my xt720 the way it is and get on with life
-Root my Xt720 and upgrade to 2.2 or
-Get the Samsung Nexus S
I'm really confused D': , and would really appreciate help on the subject, also if there is an x-factor that I'm missing (either good or bad) i want to know about it. What do you guys think? oh, and in case anyone was wondering i have the irresistable plan
