HTC HD2 and Gmail - HD2 General

ok, I've used the search button, found lots of stuff but not what I wanted or unclear. This is what I want: I want my mails from my gmail adress to be pushed to my HTC HD2. I want them to wake up the device and tell me, I have a mail ( like a text basically )
What do I do, what do I set up, I've tried turning on push, but it seems to be turning itself off or something, it doesn't look on when I go to the manager. If anybody can help me, that would be great. Ow, and we're talking 3G or edge, gprs, not wifi here.

There's no push feature that I know of, you set how ofter to check for new email, and in notifications you set how to let you know that you have new email.

There you are: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299

Completely wrong.

kilrah is spot on, and it works extremely well. The only thing I would add is that it does add to battery drain, so I would disable it at night and other times it is not required. G-profile can be used for this. By the way, it will not work if you are connected to a computer using Activesync, and that computer does not allow connection to the internet (most work networks are set up this way).

so does this keep the internetconnection open all of the time, even when the phone is asleep? I suppose so?
I'm asking that because, when I put the settings on send and receive every 5 minutes, it appears as if the connection stays on after the first send and receive ( for instance, I check pxInternet and it has been connected for 40min ) and yeah, if that were to be the case, why not use push.
thx for the help so far, really, great and to the point.

Yes of course, otherwise the server would have no way to tell the phone there's something new for it. If you close the data connection in the connection manager it will warn you this also deactivates push.
I've found the idle data usage and battery drain is minimal (at least on 3G). Push on for one night drained 8% battery, which is pretty much the same as without it (~6%). Data usage was under 100kB, and I received 2 mails during the night. Makes great savings, as doing a send/receive on my IMAP account easily uses around 200kB, which would happen every 5 mins or whatever is set for automatic checking, and by extension less traffic = less battery usage...
EDGE might use more battery as there are more keepalive signals.

I agree with Kilrah, I have my calendar, contact and email all synced through google and i don't notice any obvious battery drain compared to when push is turned off.

I use ActiveSync to sync my Gmail account and the push works fine.

Because Google Sync works via ActiveSync, you can adjust the settings for ActiveSync (e.g. only during peak times). So no need to use G-profile.

PUSH mail is avalaible on GMail with HD2. Look here : http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299

can you synch/push more than 1 gmail account with this method?

How do you do that please?
As well as the battery/data aspect I would rather not have my sleep disturbed by the "bings" of new emails!

In activesync, menu -> scheduling.

ActiveSync > Menu > Schedule. And just set Off-peak times to Manually so you won't be disturbed when sleeping
At the bottom click on: "Adjust peak times to fit your schedule"
Sleep well

Thanks Guys!
I have set that up to push my main Gmail account and am using Gudusoft email scheduler to check the other one every 30mins.
Let's see how will it works now!

Sync issues
Anyone having any issues sync'ing with calender.
For some reason the only way I can sync at all is with that one disabled.
Currently I'm only using push with email and contacts only since the other won't work.
Can't believe I didn't know that google offered this service now...yes I just found out today reading this forum...
Been waiting too long for this...

Hello, I have some problems with gmail...
When HD2 turns off (standby), it doesn't sync my emails (haven't tried contacts or calendar yet). When I go to activesync to check what happened there are 2 possibilities:
1) If I am home (wifi always on even in standby mode) I get an error (0x80004004). Btw even with wifi on it still keeps the data connection on (?!?!?)
2) If wifi is off it starts syncing when I open activesync.
Any help would be appreciated
EDIT: Seems like there is no problem when wifi is off after all. I guess having wifi always enabled is a problem because it automatically disables 3g...

i want to share my cheap way of getting my emails from Gmail on my phone

emoze.com offering free push email...any tried this yet?

www.emoze.com has just come up with a push email feature for mobiles and pdas.
i just wanted to know if anyone has tried out the service and how is it?
i don't have an outlook exchange server so i can't really set up direct push on my 8125.
I just checked and Emoze does not support the Qtek 9100 yet
try selecting the Tmo MDA.. same thing.. i'm downloading the program now to see if it works..
ok, stay away from it for now, it is in beta, but here's what happened to me..
1. it replicated my contacts about 40 times.. i had to go thru and delete duplicates... ugh..
2. Program on the PC desktop crashes randomly, it crashed 4 times in a 30 minute period..
3. kinda flaky performance.. it works as in the push email function, it notifies you, but then it took 3-4 trys on the PPC to get out of the notification/program and see the actual email in outlook..
give it time and if they perfect it a little, this will be very cool to have..

Cool, thanks for the input. Hopefully they'll fix the bugs soon so we can use it.
replicated my contacts also, it states that you cannot have activesync running while this program is running, which is kinda ridiculous...another thing is, it runs OFF of your computer, uses your OUTLOOK, nothing on their end, its just a piece of software...in other words, if your computer is off, no email....useless if you ask me
Ya know, it's a shame the T-Mobile's SMS-based notification feature isn't a bit better tuned. It really works well - just takes to long to notify your phone of a new event.
For anyone who hasn't tried it. When you go to the T-Mobile website, you can put in the info for one or more of your non-T-Mobile email services. You can use POP3 or IMAP4 servers along with your SMTP server, and you specify your email login and password.
After that, you can click on the feature in your MDA that retrieves specs for your email account from T-Mobile's servers, and pocket Outlook will set up an appropriate additional account for you in the MDA. With this all set up, you can, in addition to your normal way of checking your email, check your email account via the T-Mobile website or via your MDA simply by doing a Send/Receive on the MDA in the Messaging app.
The neat part that T-Mobile hasn't quite implemented 100% is that you can have their server monitor your email account for new incoming messages, and in turn send a "silent SMS" to your MDA to let it know when new email has arrived. Then your MDA automatically kicks off a Send/Receive, fetches whatever email is waiting on the server and notifies you.
This works quite well. The ONLY problem is that that it may take way too long for you to be notified that something new is on the server. This could be due to one (or both) of two possibilities:
1) T-Mobile's back-end servers may not be monitoring and checking your email server frequently enough. If it checks for new email every minute, that's great - but if it waits 30 minutes between checks, that's about the best you can hope for when waiting for your MDA to be notified about new incoming mail.
2) Even if T-Mobile's back-end servers "know" that your email provider's servers have new mail for you once a minute, that only helps if the "daemon" (or whatever process they use) sends the "silent SMS" to you immediately. If the "silent SMS" is queued up, and the process to send them out is delayed, or possibly scheduled to happen once every 30 minutes, we have yet another way in which it takes too long for your phone to be notified that new email has arrived.
Whichever delay is causing this, it would be fantastic if T-Mobile could fix it. If they did, this would, functionally, serve the purpose of push email for many of us -- especially for those of us who have unlimited messaging as part of our plan with T-Mobile.
despite the bugs, it worked great, and i'm gonna keep an eye on their progress..
This is basically the program i've been looking for. Something that I can load on my own PC (since it's on 24/7) and have it sync my inboxes on my 8125.. it was nearly instantaneous when it worked on my system..
a note to people that want to try this though...
1. BACKUP YOUR CONTACTS!!!!
2. Make sure ActiveSync is set to not sync anything, and turned off.
3. Then run the program..
I wish it was more stable, and i'd use it all the time, but until then, im sticking with POP updating every 2 minutes..
I can't get it to work on my PC in my office. My company uses a proxy server and the desktop app can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions?
not really sure.. but keep an eye on this thread from their forums, the emoze team might respond with an answer..

I think they started push service in their "live.web2mail" bbeta but I could be mistaken as I have not tried it. Even if it free it wont be for long as MS has pretty expensive licensing fees per user to use exchange server. I think they have 6 months where they can claim 0 users. The emoze you need your home pc on all the time. For me it would be ok cuz i always keep my pc turned on but for a lot of people i dont think they do that.
Any news on this? Is it working yet? I keep my computer on all the time and was looking at running Exchange Server from it to get Push Email, but maybe I'm better off waiting for this?
I've been using a mail3web live account for a couple of weeks and it works very well. I just had to set up mail forawrding from my own ISP. I'm pretty sure it's not push email but it works fine through active sync on the PPC as long as I remember not to kill the application. You can set it to synch with the sever as often as you like and as I'm a bit worried about getting a large bill and I'm not too wooried about getting everything instantaniously I've set mine to synch with the server every two hours. If I want to check more frequently I just hit send/receive.

Whoops - no I haven't discovered a new one! The above should read mail2web live account!

There's no tweak. mail2web just upgraded to Exchange SP2, so if you've got a ROM in your wizard that supports push (I'm using the 2.17 custom on my TMO MDA), sign up for a free mail2web account, forward your email there from other accounts, and follow the diretions to set it up on your Wizard, and you will get true push email now.
The only problem I have is that I forward my gmail to my mail2web, and once or twice/day I notice I'm not getting e-mail, sign in to my gmail account and under the forward it says gmail is having trouble forwarding to that account. I push try again, and it starts sending my email again for maybe a day. I think mail2web is either having a problem receiving so much mail (there's been a big buzz about it on xda and howard last few weeks), or else it might be a problem with their spam filters...
MC
thanx for ur reply...that's exactly what i did and got a gmail account too and everything's ok here...all my mails are directed to my mail2web account ( actually live.mail2web.com account)
But can not succeed in push to mail...my rom is the "test only" one I think it's the one before the official 2.17....Any chance to get it work though?
Many thanx...

Push without Exchange?

I was wondering if there was a way to push mail without the use of Exchange.
Everything I have seen leads to no, but if I have noticed one thing around here, is that you folks don't seem to like NO very often... kinda like my wife.
www.emoze.com
I use it and it is close to perfect for me.
It's free, simple, installs on your Desktop PC and a client on your TYTN. I programed it to push every 10 minutes - more than enough for me.

Christmas and the bug is being looked into. Hopefully fixed in their next release.
If you have Cingular you can get Xpressmail Personal Edition.
is there anyone who knows if it is possible to change the name from Emoze to something else? (account name)
pb with emoze is you have to have PC connected all the time, otherwise no email is pushed forward ... just my 2 cents ...
Sure you do. Your PC is your server so it has to be on all the time. What is the problem with that?
You could just use a free www.mail2web.com exchange account. If you want to change the outgoing email address all you pay is $1.99. I went from 1and1.com exchange to there service and its about the same minus customer service.

I thought you can set your pop3 email to check it a certain interval in minutes...like..1, 2, 3 miniutes, etc...
I have it set up on mine...so it does log into your pop3 server...and it is free with no additional software. I forgot where to go and set the time interval.

If memory serves correctly, it is in the "Accounts" tab of the program.
Yep its in accounts then follow the setup thing until you get to servre information and then click on the options button
I wish there was a way to make it check every day though instead of the max being every hour.
Cheers
Beware Emoze...if you leave the default settings you might end up draining your battery if you're constantly in a 3G area. My wife's 8525 was like this...it checked almost constantly and the 3G use would drain the unit to half battery about 3 hours after being unplugged from the charger. Thankfully she's on unlimited data so I don't have to worry about the bill .
Install her EMOZE on a memory card instead of the main memory. This will make a difference and also it won't drain the memory. Also have her install the Band Switch program and stay on GSM most of the time. If she requires large downloads she can switch to UMTS for a limited time.

that is what I usually do, except I don't use emoze but the trick is worth been mentionned.
You can use OpenPush by ivorh, see this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=279369
on most of the latest ROM's, the messaging client will check at least every 5 mins. Im on Black 2.5 and I am someone that goes back and forth with people with Sidekicks and its enough for me to check every 5 mins vs. spending money and setting up new accounts.
Go Mail messanger > Options> highlight and select the account you want to change >Next till you see advanced settings> under automatic send receive select interval.
I stayed on WM5 til this was available on WM6. Why pay for push?

Send/Receive all email accounts at once?

I have my Messaging service linked to 5 different email accounts. Is there way to receive email from all of them at once? Currently, I have to open each account, and hit the send/receive button (a bit of a time waster). I use wi-fi, so I like to receive only when there is a connection. Thanks.

Rather unhelpful I know, but given that the 'send/receive' command is only available on a per account basis I would guess you are doing the best that you can.
There may of course be other PPC e-mail clients (other than Pocket OutlooK) that can do what you want.
You might want to consider senting the accounts (each one seperately) to automatically collect the mail - then you'd achieve what you want without actually having to hit send/recieve manually. You could have this work only with WiFi or an Activesync connection by disabling the data connection - this would stop it from connecting and (presumably for you) causing expensive data connection charges. Of course if the data connection charge is not an issue then simply leave it enbaled and you will effectively achieve push mail (albeit auto pull in fact).

Push Gmail Solution

first if id like to say, sorry if the title is misleading
second, im still trying to figure out how to get true directpush gmail on the HD, ive been using wm for 4 years now....but since ive gotten the HD is when the push gmail is really starting to bother me, i mean yes, i can use owa to get my gmail, but its either manual sync, or interval sync. which is not true push mail. ive been able to use my hotmail account for push mail, obviously MS designed it this way that you can use it.
but still cannot find a way through owa or standalone wm to get push gmail
other thoughts here are;
-hotmail is capable of this obviously their parent company created the technology
-blackberry is capable of this because they have their BES server
-third party apps blow, so its not a true solution, i would perfer to have my emails between sender and me, rather than being filtered through by some third party app/company
if anyone has any kind of input or say, please feel free...
no one has a solution?
ive seen that there a lot of people looking at this thread, people have come across this im sure problem/topic, but no one has found a solution to the gmail push?!!

I had the same problem but "solved" it with HD Tweak. Ok solved is the false word for it but it works now.
So what I did is:
1. Start HD Tweak of course
2. Go to point 6.1 (Disconnect After)
3. I set it to 1 Minute or 2 Minutes
4. Save this with OK
After that my gmail works perfect when it always have to connect for a new time to the internet! If you are connected to the internet it won´t work! Crazy but ok what should I do
First I didn´t wanted to use this "disconnect after" option to get my gmail workin. I only wanted to safe battery energy but than I saw that with this disconnecting after 1Minute (on my HD) my gmail is working and syncing all mails correctly to my Touch HD.
Please tell me if it also works on your HD!

Sorry wrong answer on your question.....I thougt you have a problem syncing with gmail^^
But your question would be also interesting to me if there is a possibility to have pushmail with gmail.
Im also really interested. I have mine set to sync every hour which is ok but as mentioned, not pushmail at all. In fact it is barbarically pullmail.
I hope this will solve the problem.

Carefull with the battery.

Sorry for my bad english

well i mean i have gmail set up as imap on my hd but its still pullmail, i set it to manually sync, right now i have all my gmail forwarded to my hotmail, i get pushmail from that so, if i do get an email from my gmail account ill know and i can just hit sync on gmail, and reply if i need to, if i dont need to reply its just to read it then. but its not a solution just a temporary fix? waiting on google to release a gmail sync!
Funambol
Try funambol. It's open source and is getting to be a very popular push email solution.
Hi, I tried using the funambol which seems like a good application. However I couldnt get the messages by push.If I manually do 'sync all' I get the messages but not as push mail as and when they arrive. My 3g connection is on and funambol client is also running.Any idea what I am missung.

im a bit hesitant about trying out the program, doesnt sound worth it, i could be wrong. but googled it a bit and found this
http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/networking/?p=160
the article is a bit dated, but still. skimmed through it and i think it says all funambol basically sends you a sms? and tells you that you have new mail which means manually having to hit "send/receive" i may be wrong, i didnt read the entirety of the article
but in my opinion still not a true solution, im so eager for google to release a gmail sync, dont let me down google....! waiting for you to release a break through tech for wm users!!

Hi,
I was also interested in push mail solution for WM and Touch Hd and this is what I found:
http://www.emoze.com/
I downloaded version for htc/other device and installed cab on mobile. After creating an account for gmail, it automaticly created account in outlook. Mails seems to be pushed into my mobile maybe 1 minute after they arrive to gmails inbox, so it sounds like a fair solution. Pls someone check that because it seems too good to be true. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to be a real push mail solution for gmail and wm. And its free.

I just tested Emoze, and I'm REALLY impressed!
The setup is fast, and easy!
In the settings menu, I get my own language, despite the software being downloaded in English!
Receipt of testmail on my HD after 4 minutes.
Receipt of reply on my Lotus Notes after 30 seconds(!!!).
This is it! I'm not looking any longer
Another alternative is Seven. I've been using it for over a year now and prefer it to emoze. It's still in beta but works great.
well does seven emoze and funambol all enable you to reply with the gmail account name? and its all a separate application correct?
in a way my temporary fix is working for me, pain in the ass but working.....i just prefer not to have a 3rd party program "filter" through my emails, private or not.....
but has anyone received any word on whether googles releasing a gmail sync?

Seven integrates with outlook and runs in the background to deliver emails. When you want to read/reply you use outlook. Any replies sent are from the email address you set up.

Same thing with Emoze.

E-mail direct push and setup !

Hi there everyone
I have this issue setting up my Leo for the direct push.
The good news is ,I did setup the hotmail account as well the outlook for the "as it arrive " for the direct push and I found it that amazingly the hotmail arrive to my phone like in a fraction of a second "super fast" and that the outlook take a little while " I'm not complaining as long as it arrive" the only thing that it only push e-mails when I'm on the Wi-Fi connection.
However, when I try switching off the Wi-Fi no Push?!...... So what went wrong?, any ides, or anyone have better solution. Though when I do "physically" ActiveSync the outlook do receive the new e-mails. It looks like the phone doesn't sense the new e-mail.
Other thing dose anyone know how to receive push e-mails as well from Gmail and yahoo??
Thanks a lot
any help plz guys
I am interested in this too, my Gmail syncs fine. But Hotmail only works if i manually sync it when on 3G. It's greyed out in the email accounts section so i can't alter the settings.
The email setup is a bit of a black art to me on here. Maybe i should read the 310 page PDF manual.

The thing that I found a round-over solution for it by using a 3rd part application "Seven or emozeMail" to add ur e-mail account and it will do the trick for you!
However, this is not a really push serve from WM, I was looking for something without the use of the 3rd party app. Again, the hotmail as well the outlook do push when it is only on Wi-Fi!!! But not in the SIM net connection
By the way how did you set ur Gmail to act as push e-mail?
Best luck
no answer!!!
up...up...up i really need helop!!!
Stupid question - you do have Direct Push on under comm manager I guess?
have you tried turning it off rebooting then back on again
Have you tried performing the intial setup/sync over 3G and not Wifi?
I just set mine up using 3G and did nothing special and it syncs using 3G fine from Hotmail.
I didn't do anything special, so can't tell you how to magically sort it. Sorry.

If you want 'push' e-mail then it'll have to maintain a connection - either 3G or Wifi. It won't connect when an e-mail is received then disconnect once it's downloaded, it requires a constant connection for the device to receive the e-mail immediately

It's best not to use push e-mail unless you have an unlimited data plan! I'm not sure what you're asking: do you want to know how to set up an sync schedule? In the Windows Live options you can specify a 'sync sechdule' frequency, anywhere from every 15 minutes to four hours. You can do the same for an exchange/activesync account.

thankx alot for ur help. what i was trying to say that when i compare better the two methods ( the Data connection Vs Sechdule one) for me the data connection will be very costly !..what i was thinking of that if there is like a way to disconnecte the Data after it have pushed the e-mail
Actually, push won't increase your data usage. it may well decrease it.
Good point actually, just being connected won't cost anything without data transfer. Cheaper than repeatedly refreshing your inbox.

It should be so, that's why it's usually charged by the megabyte.
