Warning about running 780mhz - G1 General

Mod Edit: Moved from Android Development. (General view, though not all agree, is that this is a better forum for this)
hi im only writing this to inform people to be carefull when your flashing roms and overclocking because the devs are not joking when they say that theyre not responsible for bricked phones. i am not blaming anyone. so ive had my g1 for quite a while now and have always used cyanogens mod. when kingkick released aosp 2.1 i flashed it. and have been using it since.
my g1 had the death spl and i had just 1 partion on my sd card. my fat32.
i flashed kingkicks 1.5 2 days ago and was running it at 780mhz. i noticed the battery would deplete faster than running at 528mhz. today i was running it at 770mhz and i had the brightness up 100%, i had wireless tether running, usb tether running, gps, and i was using google maps to buzz about my location. i set my phone down for maybe 1 minute and when i looked back at my laptop it had no connection. i checked my phone and it was super hot. the led light was red. i removed the battery and now it wont boot. it just rapidly turns out the red led light and it turns back off. good thing is i have insurance but just a warning to those that are doing stuff to their phone and have no insurance.

I read the other sections.

Hey, thanks for the info!

Another reason could be all the crap you have running, wifi/usb tething by themselves not with each other heat the phone up enough, running both and other apps, thats a deadly mix right there the chips can only handle so much heat, and with all of those

There are thermal fuses in the system that will blow when parts of the phone get too hot. There's one on the mainboard that I know of, and one or an equivalent protection system in the battery.
Personally I don't see what's wrong with warning developers (as distinct from integrators) that clocking the main CPU at 2x stock rate may exceed the power and/or thermal budget of the handset and that such mods may not be particularly wise for "daily-use" ROMs, i.e., those that aren't being cooked just to whore for attention.

So, you're trying to say it was better to post a new thread than post this in one of the 3 or 4 overclocking threads?

Dang. I'm glad I over clock at 628 mahz 528 min. After reading a lot about how 780 mhz barely makes a difference from 628 mhz I don't know why people even over clock that much. 628 mhz is plenty for me.

So you had wireless and isb tethering going =HEAT... then were playing with maps and buzz while tethering 2 different ways... And you think its because of the overclocking?????
Good luck on that

errm, red led you say
OMG mine has a RED LED
hold on... that means its charging
phew....
seriously, I very much doubt this has anything to do with King's ROM @ 770Mhz the OC is a myth.
I have noticed my G1 get hot, even with the Rooted RC33 when running 3G/GPS

LOL @grandomegabosses

omg man you guys are hilarious.

you people are ridiculous...this is good info, and a good warning, and instead of burying it in a thread he decided to make a new topic...as a warning...to the end user...
some of you people need to get off your high horse...it's not like you see as many "I just bought a G1 and it doesn't have multitouch, what do I do???" threads anymore...
sometimes I think you look for things to b*tch about.
(I haven't had any issues and I've been running at 780mhz max and min)
but he's pretty much saying...watch out...he doesn't know the deal...he's simply warning us.

first off, how am i on a high horse?
second, how is posting THIS thread in development not worthy of flaming?
third, he was running his device in a way that would overheat it without the unnecessary overclocking.
fourth, get off your "antihighhorse" high horse.

Not necessarily saying that. But which of the three threads would you have dj post it in? Or would you have them post it in all three? Personally I think it'd be nice if, since we have the thread now, the "me toos" got posted here, hoping all the same that there aren't any.

its only serving to perpetuate the OC myth
max is 528Mhz !!!
, the 'speed' increase people are reporting is more likely to do with 'Up threshold' tweaks i.e. it scales up sooner.

Breakthrough!!!

Ok im running jacheroskiv1.5r2, and its been great so far.
I usually leave my phone on the charger and go to sleep, but when I woke up just now(i got class @11:30 im not a bum for waking up @ 10:30 ) but any way my leds are working. They aren't as bright as the original leds, but they are there nonetheless they even flash when i get a text.
idk what happened btw im basically a n00b
not quite
Its not really a breakthrough, in the description for the rom it mentions that there are slight led fixes where it will come on just very dim.
lol ye they work
I was expecting something amazing and then i open the thread and see this. Dude dont you read the change log before you download a rom?

My Vibrant Rant

So, I got the vibrant, and overall I like it because its much more responsive than both my G1 and MyTouch, but kind of have the following thoughts.
1. I feel having an LED has to be a big mistake/oversight. I cant imagine the LED would have much added cost for samsung nor be very big/require much space. Yet would have a GREAT improvment on the user experience. I hate not being able to glance at my phone and see what happened. Plus, it's alot less battery than having to turn on the screen. There are some hacks - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725458 - being done to compensate, but none are 'great' solutions, although clever.
2. Battery life - for an AMOLED screen, I'm surprised my battery drains as fast as it does. It lasts me 3/4 of a day more or less. I do have a few things installed, and do use the feed widgt for facebook etc, and have gmail and work email synced. I think it still doesnt last as long as it should. I'm considering removing the facebook widget and adjusting sync times to get more battery back, but still feels lacking.
P.S. : Isnt there some sort of App that can help me identify which apps are using the most battery/CPU time?
3. Calendar Notification - This is something I cant understand. I have worke mail synced to my phone, as well as my calendar for it synced. I get long vibrations and sound (if my phone isnt on vibrate), but there is no way I can find to adjust the notification to be less annoying. I know other users have noticed the same issue
4. Bloatware - I dont mind the fact that they install alot of apps on the phone that other users may find interesting, but I really feel they should make it easier to remove them. I shouldnt have to go through extra effort to get the bloatware removed.
5. Camera App - its a nice app, but I dont like how after taking a picture it does not switch back to camera... you have to hit the back button.
6. Power on button - You already have to do a slide to unlock... why on earth is the power button so small and obtrusive? I feel this is a bit quircky.
7. Proximity sensor - I dont know about you guys, but it took me a while to figure out why, when I am on the phone, the screen kept lighting up on and off. I *think* I figured out that the proximity sensor right next to the ear piece detects if your head is near the phone, and if it is away from it, it will light up the phone. I find this rather annoying, maybe I hold the phone awkwardly, but several times it has lit up while talking and I've accidentally muted etc.
So ya, </rant>
Overall, the phone is nice and a well needed improvement over my previous phone, but I feel there were just a few simple things that samsung could of done to make it a solid release.
What do others think?

I'm glad you felt the need to be a complete jerk in your response. Very smooth and professional.
FYI the rant was partially so others (who may want to get the phone) know what issues and downsides I've personally experienced, and partially to see if anyone has any suggestions on ways to imrpove/fix some of my issues.
If you have nothing smart to say next time, it may be best to just keep it to yourself.

this posting was worth it allow for this fine joke of yours...nice one do you do stand up?
@temperbad - the reason people on this forum will harass you about your post is mainly this:
xda-developers is just that - a DEVELOPERS forum. Most people who want to complain about devices go to forums for those devices that address general discussion. This forum caters to people who "mod" their devices. While many new-comers do come to this forum and are welcomed - it is appreciated if they stay on topics related to app modification/generation, themeing, developing and modifying ROMS and such.
So, while many do get on here and post about other crap - it is only tolerated by those that seriously want to use these forums for the intended purposes.
Your rant about this device will most likely only be heard by those who own the device out of necessity or desire - AND, by people who are already committed to owning the device. THEY DON'T CARE about hearing someone complain about a device they are already committed to!
So, in the future please make these kinds of posts on forums on which people discuss more general topics or cater to the device "generally" instead of on a forum that is dedicated to DEVELOPMENT and MODIFICATION.
I am not attempting to be harsh - however, hopefully, others will read this and will not post topics that are not related to this forum.
MOST OF THE REALLY GREAT DEVELOPERS ARE RAN OFF from Development forums because of all the off topic comments. We hope that one day this will stop.... But, I am beginning to feel like all hope is lost...
@shaneaus - yes, I understand that, but I did post in the GENERAL section. Also, I understand this is a developer forum. I'm a developer myself and have trolled the forums for a few years, and there are some development solutions to the problems I mentioned (like notifications) etc...
Thanks for the thoughtful response though.
Every phone has it's shortcomings
Return it or whine about it
At this point I would suggest you move on
wait for the froyo update and some of your issues may be resolved.

Are you people serious? You don't know how a Proximity sensor works on these phones? "Bloatware" as if T-Mobile hid it from you and has SO much of it on this phone? "Photo review, a feature that YOU CAN TURN OFF IN THE CAMERA SETTINGS?!" "PS isn't there an app that will tell me what is using the most battery" - Wow. Just wow. And you call this a "rant"? Maybe you should consult the owners manual before creating threads like this.
You knew or should've known that there is no LED Notification light on this phone. If you're trying to tell me that the battery life is worse on this phone than the G1 you're doing something seriously wrong.

Yes yes.. So true... I stand by my first post with pride.....

What should i expect?

I just brought an Atrix. Its coming in the postage and well initially i read reviews from Engadget and such. But what im a to expect? Is the battery life really that great? Oh and i plan to root the device, how do i go about doing that?
So yeah, Im new to android and moving over from WP7.
Personally I miss WP7. I had a focus, but I am more than happy with the Atrix. A lot of the issues people mention here are things that I do not get or notice. I can see the pixels on the screem, but only if I really try to look for them.
One thing the Atrix kills WP7 in is games. I'm playing Galaxy on fire 2 and History Channel Great Battles; they are great and rival my PS3.
I have a HTC trophy, and it really is a let down. Battery life is poor. Lasting maybe 7 hours when idle and when im using it throughout the day, usually it will last for about 4 hours. Camera isnt great, games are really awkward to play, oh and the speaker is crackles regardless of how loud it is. I will admit i do like the music player, the photoviewer and overall UI is really nice. But im sure i can customize android to the same standard. Right? Though, I heard atrix is alot smoother when playing games, but i dont know if it could rival my ps3 haha
I'll be getting one soon as well. can't wait

your username is perfect OP
I too came from WP7 (lg quantum) and I tell you the Atrix is amazing I've never had any of the issues people reported and the battery really is that great. If you properly charge it from day one (drain the battery then let it charge for a day, and repeat) the battery will be amazing I no lie get around 14hrs of useage and im constantly youtubing, texting, downloading some game or playing a game, but using setcpu I have it underclocked at 816mhz but even at full I would get 10-12 hours of use. And as far as root. My favorite method is gladroot. Its clean neat and seems to work throughout updates.
But thats just my 2 cents

Thanks Guys, I really cant wait to get my hands on it. Battery life is a big issue with me, considering my phone was at 50% by 8:30 in the morning, and i had only taken it off the charger at 7ish. But to be fair, i had been on youtube and reddit for the hour and a bit. And I learnt today that my speaker doesnt work, its now just plain static. How lovely.

There are no custom ROMs or custom kernels available for the Atrix at the moment, there are "pseudo ROMs" that apply themes and hacks etc but still use the Motorola kernel. Supposedly 2nd init will open the door for some true ROMs/kernels in the future, but there is no eta. Dont hold your breathe for an unlocked bootloader like many are doing, there is no reason to expect one. I love CM7 on my Captivate and before that I flashed every ROM to the moon and back.. Hands down the Atrix is a better piece of hardware and is much more of a reliable phone out of the box. I am much more happy with the Atrix in its current state than I ever was with my Captivate running any custom ROM.
Edit: I stand corrected. It seams there is an unlocked bootloader solution being offered by Moto now is some countries and/or on a few leaked builds. Fingers crossed Moto/Att push this update to us also! But as of right now there is no official word. Only speculation and word passed from ear to ear.

Screen unable to show accurate yellows.

Has this been fixed with firmware updates or now that custom roms are able to be loaded?
Or is the screen just that terrible?
Sent from my microwave
I've heard this complain before but I don't seem to have this issue.. or perhaps I'm color blind or something lol.
I do intend to not have much yellow more so red and black on my screen than anything..
Is it really THAT MUCH of a nuisance?
it is really annoying, and unfortunately i'm pretty sure it's hardware-based due to the PenTile display. there are plenty of previous discussions on this so please search back and read up on it there.

It's not terrible for me. It's just the way our screen is.
Our screen was built for -> battery saving, that's why color reproduction has problems.
And for me the choice paid off, I am getting the best battery life than with any android smartphone.
If color reproduction was more important to you, you shouldn't have bought an Atrix.
Supposedly pentile screens also have advantages with sunlight visibility. My wife has an HTC Desire S, and it is literally unviewable in the Sun and yet mine remained completely usable and clear. She was not impressed and I was left gloating

You're getting the best battery life of any android phone because you have the biggest battery of any android phone LOL
And there is no reason in the world why inaccurate color reproduction would EVER result in better battery life. Unless of course you're talking about switching a screen to black and white.

Its too bad some color panel hidden behind the scenes couldn't be accessed to correct the color. It would have been a top contender for some time to come. Love how big the battery is.
Have they ported cm7 to it yet? Are they still doing the 2nd init hack or has the bootloader been unlocked?

wasn't trying to upset you.
but if we're on that wave, if you're well aware of the problem and searching only netted you no new answers, what did you expect asking would do? net you more non-new answers.
The Atrix screen indeed makes everything a little "bluer" (are your yellows slightly green?).
I read that in CM7 you can alter the color scheme a little bit, or there's an app that can also do this...I'd have to search a little bit to find what I'm talking about, but I'll post a link in just a sec.
Edit: this is what I was thinking of...Might not be exactly what you're looking for, as it requires you to have CM7 it looks like (not that that's a bad thing, but of course it's still in pre-beta and you might not want to use it). It's a start though, and gives you a little more info.
It's an unfixable hardware "problem".
It not a huge deal (can't really tell a huge difference)
Who cares.

This is excellent information and essentially a fix to the problem. I may pick up an Atrix for this very post right here!!! Thank you for the info!!!!

It's an unfixable hardware "problem".
It not a huge deal (can't really tell a huge difference)
Who cares.

Lol sure thing. Just remember that, from what I can gather, it requires you to use the CM7 ROM (which in turn requires unlocked bootloader, etc. etc.) so make sure to look into all that first!

The only thing I use is cm7 so not to worry
I just need to ask around about a couple of other things about the Atrix before I decide to buy one again.

The atrix is the bomb diggity yo.
I voided my warranty and your mum.

overclock thread(what is the best ghz you do stably?

I know higher ghz doesnt mean better but just for fun.
Lets share some overclock experience here!
I am using tegrak, running 2 ghz now. Never experience rebooting yet! And done all the test bench.
Can you please give the detail here how to set the CUP o/c up to 2.0 mhz.... Thanks a lot!
here is my setting below..i am not professional! Comment is welcome!
Nice... Do you "feel" any difference in performance? Is it worth it?

Can you walk through how you did this? I'm new to overclocking, but understand the concept. I only show up to CPU 5 and I noticed the picture you posted shows up to CPU 7. When I go to CPU 0 to adjust it to 2000, tab just reboots. Not having any success in applying the changes you've shown. Are there any other settings you haven't shown that are necessary to make these changes?

Wow, its amazing how people will just go ahead and blindly do whatever someone else does without thinking anything through.
the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is based on the old A9 cortex we know and love, and at 1.4ghz is already fast for the specifications it was originally designed for. I would think very carefully before just plugging right away with a 40% increase overclock on your very expensive and prized possession tablet. If you break it via crazy high frequency speeds, and Samsung engineers would have little trouble identifying the cause in a repair shop and your warranty will certainly be void.

wow, it's amazing how people just assume everyone else around them are idiots and are completely oblivious as to the detrimental effects this can cause to their tablet.
I know quite well the dangers of OC'ing a PC and Tablet.
Back to the OP. Can you explain how you've done this?
Wow 2Ghz at 1.3Volts

You say you are new to overclocking, then say you tried to directly apply 2ghz and the tablet "just rebooted". Forgive me for assuming you don't quite know what you are doing.
I'm calling shenanigans on this post... Those settings are just bollocks, unless the OP somehow managed to get their hands on a prototype 5 series Exynos, which CAN handle speeds like that...

I never claimed to know exactly what I am doing, which is why I asked for help explaining how it was done. I said I understand the concept and the detrimental effects OC'ing something can cause.
If you don't have something useful to contribute to the thread, don't waste yours or anyone elses time by posting.

Yup, I can imagine the CPU handling it for as long as it takes to reach unstable temperatures... 0.5-50 seconds. Not to mention the voltage i can imagine required to keep it stable at such a high frequency.

The useful thing I am contributing is trying to drill into people that just because you see someone else do silly things on a $600, doesnt mean that you should do them too.
Tablets are not desktop PC's, they are 100x more delicate and do not have close to the tolerances or tweakability that PC components enjoy, and the risk of breaking something is much greater. Going straight for 2ghz before testing stability at lower speeds (as you did, hence the reboots) is just careless, no two ways about it. However, feel free to go ahead, just don't complain here when all of a sudden it doesn't power on any more.
moving right along
colour me skeptical (of 2ghz)
