[Update new HTC-Hotfix 18/09/2009] Battery Charge issue (no green) - bug - Touch Diamond2, Pure General

Several user in swiss forum (pocketpc.ch) reported on following issue.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Charging for many hours with the device in standby doesn't come up to 100%. Ends up at 70% circa (differs), LED is orange.
2. When switching the device power off, the LED becomes green in few minutes.
3. Now when switchin on again, battery status shows 100%
Seems to be an issue with reading or displaying of battery status?

Hotfix for resolving LED not showing a green light when the battery is fully charged for HTC Touch Diamond2
edit 06/07/09:Hotfix doesn't work, no changes in behavior.

Confirmed with me. I find it a little frustrating to say the least...

I believe you may have a faulty units.

What do you want to say? You can not confirm the issue?
Additionally I suppose that it is a software issue, the device seems to be charged.
Anyone else?

i have the same problem usually at 85%, if i soft reset then i have 100%

Yep i have excatly the same problem. I just thought it was taking ages to fix
Any Fix for the promblem? Firmware, software?

Guys, I had the same problem - search for rakh1 to find the thread. Anyway, after 2 hard resets it dissapeared. Must be a software glitch. Since then it has performed perfectly.
R

same problem here. hope they fix it soon.

I have D2 for 2 week now and this problem also happen with my D2 too. However I able to get it 100% charge while my D2 still on a few time. After A few test! I believe this problem is not a hardware fault! this problem is within rom itself. I did some test on my friend's D2 and almost 100% sure about this
Here is what I did so far....
2 week ago on my first receieved my D2. it come with original ASIA rom (can't remember rom date but it come with original radio).
Not sure that on original rom have charging prrblem or not (since I did upgrade my rom to new radio because HTC web have new update).
After update my ROM, I start notice this problem.... start wonder it's software or hardware problem...?!
Start Test.... first try to charge D2 while system turn off... result: the LED always green once it fully charge! (so this can confirm that not hardware problem)
Then again, test by charge while D2 is on... and result are same... never get 100% charge
So finally, Charge while D2 is on but turn the "Airplane Mode" on to stop all mobile and network functions. and the result..... it able to get 100% charge with in few time! still not sure what cause this problem.
Anyhow, even after few hour of charging my phone and never get green LED. if I soft-reset my phone, the batt will said 100%
Sorry for some of my comments is same as other people.... just want to let other feel better

i found out how this problem is to slove
hope i can help you.

Just a different well known battery icon (FInixNOverBattery) - i have it since one week.
Has NOTHING to do with the issue described in this thread.

Call me suspicious - but downloading a rar from someone on their first post??? Maybe you can give us some more info as to what the fix is - and if there is an offical source???
Rich
PS: mine worked fine for a few weeks but is now back to never getting 100% charge again I emailed HTC about it - suggest you all do the same to get their attention.

ok, sry at my device it make a full load abel.

Same problem here, and i suggest everyone with this problem to mail HTC about it too! The more the better!

I am getting full charge even with WiFI turned on, hooked on 3G network.... I also have the latest official update WWE Asia.

Maybe the most of you did not notice, but it has to be a software-related problem and can be fixed by a new rom update.
Some phones seem to have this strange behaviour, some don't.
However, charging the phone when it's off, will ALWAYS charge it to 100%.
So the led will change from orange to green when it's done.
However, sometimes, the most of the times, when it is powered on, it seems to have difficulties updating the battery state.
To keep the best battery quality, you should not reboot your phone to get it green. Why not?
The battery was fully charged already, reboot it interrupts the charging (look at the led) and restarts it when the phone is booted again.. This means you charge it twice to 100%:
- First time when it did not show the right percentage.
- Second time, when it was already full (99% -> 100%).
As this is bad for every battery (look @ notebooks), I would advice anyone to unplug and reboot. One con about this is that the phone-information (last charge date, standby time etc.) will not be reset.

I just plug my phone in my dockingstation and it charged to 100% without any problem.

Hi, what ROM version do you have?

Athena dead or dying........any miracle workers out there?

Background:
I have had MANY PPC's (so many I can't even count them) and I've loaded many different cooked ROMS and such on most of them so I'm not a complete noob on these things (don't claim to be an expert either).
However, my most recent acquisition is an HTC Advantage bought at CompUSA. I've read most of these came with a test ROM and mine was no different except for the fact that when I attempted to update the ROM to the "official" one provided to me by HTC it would not work. I always got the error "Connection lost" about half way through the process. I tried it numerous times and it never worked. On some occasions it would get stuck on the bootloader screen but I was able to get it back to working status (still on the test ROM).
I decided to try installing step 1 of Ollipro's SPL to see if that would help loading the HTC ROM. Turns out that wouldn't work either. It would get stuck at step 1 where it would ask if "PPC gone idle and didn't work or to wait 30 seconds". Tried it many times and would try to get it to keep going but the grey box on the bottom left would say the "parameters were incorrect" and would give me the option to quit, which I would. No problem, at least my 7501 was still working.
After that I tried the official HTC ROM again and I got the same "connection lost" error I had previously, except this time I didn't get anything on my PPC screen, just a black screen, not even the battery charging light behind the joystick lights up anymore. Soft reset...........nothing. Bootloader reset....................nothing. Hard reset.......................nothing. No lights, nada. The only flicker I get is if I try a reset wheen the power cord is connected. A red light flickers behind the joystick whenever I click the reset button. Any ideas or any help?
Sounds to me like the battery is just dead. I bought one at CompUSA (had the test ROM also) and I got the red ring around the joystick too when I tried to turn it on in the store. I left it plugged in awhile and it finally booted up okay. I then replaced the test ROM with the one and only available for the X7501 on HTC USA's web site. Good luck and I hope you get it working!
I think it could be battery related as well but it had a full charge when this happened. For some reason the unit has lost communication with the battery. I'm at a loss.
I got the same problem like you man !!! but i bad luck and so stupid man , i did with HTC X7501 then it dead after that i bought the X7500 then did it again , holy "... " it dead again....man ...So how your phone now bro ????
I left out the battery a half day and tried it again but still dead. Then I left it charging overnight and tried it again but still dead.
I can't believe this. I've never had a bricked device that can't be revived but after so many have seen this post and still no solutions I'm guessing it's no hope.
I met the same situation when I started to unlock Athena ( TMobile Ameo) within not fully charged battery ( less then 70%).
Solution ( try to make BL mode) with connected wallsocket charger ( not connected to PC USB slot) or find 100% charged battery. It helped me two times.
After many tries it changed to BL mode .
Now I didn't start unlock/change ROM without 100% charged battery.
I have the same BIG Problem, only red fliker when soft reset when AC conected. I wanted to update rom from russian to english and phone stoped working (black screen), and battery heats when inserted in phone . nothing to do? i read everything but i have not got any solution. I think it may be bios dead. helap us please

"heating battery" (i.e. discharging when inserted, you mean?), no charge led = dead bootloader indeed.
I get the same problem. My device is work, but not charge. Also like yours i have red ring around the joystick when the battery is taked out. And if battery inside, when i make a softreset it blink one time, continued to load but not charge.
You`r speaking all wonderful. But have anybody found the solution?
Hearing these stories makes me nervous. I'm on the stock ROM (mine came from CompUSA with the latest ROM and I don't have an urge to try the cooked ROM yet). I've been using my Athena daily for 4 months, it charges correctly from several different chargers I have (car, computer USB, stock wall charger, aftermarket wall charger).
However, one day 2 weeks ago I went to make a call in the middle of the day and my Athena was dead. D-e-a-d. Usually I can make it back home at night and still have 90-100% on the battery meter, so with no use in the middle of the day and a dead battery, this was weird. It wouldn't turn on, no soft boot, took the battery out and put it back in, and always got nothing.
I bring this up here because when I plugged it in, I encountered similar problems that others here are describing. It wouldn't turn on, and it didn't give me the orange charging light behind the joystick. I ended up leaving it plugged in for a while and finally I got a red ring, not the usual orange. I've only seen red when the battery was almost dead and the unit was on. Then after some more time the ring turned orange and at this point it would turn on again. I still have no idea why my battery died so fast and hard.
So, is there a problem with the battery charging system that is starting to crop up in units that have been used a while???

Hi i am no expert but i had simaler problem no display or no lights round ring no responce to any commands (ie hard reset and bootloader ) only red light flickred on reset button all i did was removed battery while pressing reset button and placed new battery and left it on wall charger for couple of hours and before doing hard reset i pressed reset button 2 to 3 times and green light round the battery came up so i tryed bootloader and it worked and insted of flashing it with pc i just loaded the img in sd card and flashed it while whole thing was on charge (i had tmob test rom before ) which i think is best way to do no hassle of losing connection or failing in half way and it works like a charm
hope this helps
and ya if you have a spare battery it dose help
New battery?
I'm a wizard user (and lots of former PDAs) looking to buy and Athena, maybe.
Has anyone tried a new, right out of the envelope, battery? these issues sound like worn out Li-Ion batteries to me. I've had them completely conk (won't take a charge at all) if I let them go completely down, and I've had them wear out and stop taking a full charge (down to maxing out at about %20, but sometimes showing %100 depending on ROM status) when I kept charging them while they're already charged.
Li-Ion batts don't sit for long periods too well, either, so if they're sitting on the shelf at the store/warehouse, they may be suffering even more than one that has been used since earlier in its childhood.
Perhaps the answer is a switched charger that stops charging when the battery (not the ROM/unit reading) gets to %100. ???
I didn't see anything like this posted. I'm terribly curious to see if anyone can resolve it.

Amber charge light always on! Arrhh!

Hi everyone,
I have an unusual problem and I have searched almost the whole internet but I have not found an answer, so now I turn to you for any ideas. My problem is that over the past month, my amber/orange charge light remains constantly on, even when the phone is not charging. I have tried to soft reset, I have looked into HKLM->Drivers->BuiltIn->Battery key and have found no solution. The phone will still charge the battery OK. The other bluetooth light works OK, it still blinks when bluetooth is on. The right led remains orange. I have also tried to take out the battery and re-insert, but issue persists. I am using Faria's 3.3 and IPL/SPL is 2.26, radio is 2.61.11 for over 6 months on a WIZA100, but the issue has occurred a little over a month. Phone has always been well taken care of, no major drops and absolutely no water has ever touched it. Battery drain is normal, I get about 1 day and a half of normal usage, push email. I thought it was batterystatus, and I have removed it, but problem persists. When I soft reset, as soon as the IPL/SPL screen comes on, better yet, as soon as the HTC logo screen before the IPL/SPL screen comes on, the battery light remains constant orange. Any ideas? Please help!!
Sincerely,
Ricardo Cheing

It doesn't sound like you've tried hard resetting your device yet. Hard resetting the device will not revert back to manufacturers rom but will bring you back to the part where you configure the phone, before customization.
I imagine this is the only way you are going to get the orange light to go away, at least when its not charging... You can hard reset by holding the comm manager and voice button and pressing the reset button with the stylus.
BACK UP EVERYTHING BEFORE HARD RESETTING!!!! If you do not, you will lose everything on the device IE: music, videos, pictures, documents etc...
Try to use another Radio ROM version. The charging related issues are related to the Radio ROM.
Thanks guys, I will change the radio rom on my phone before hard resetting. I didn't want to try to hard reset because of the way I already have my phone configured. I have heard there is a way to create a cab with all customizations, but I'll have to figure out how to do this. I will report more later, because I'm at work right now and I don't have the usb cable.

Hi, my phone last night (O2 XDA Mini S (Wizard)) started the exact same symptoms as you. At half 4 last night the screen came on and the phone claimed to be charging, while unplugged. I soft reset, but no change. by the morning the phone now claims to be fully charged. I've taken the battery out for a while, soft reset but nothing has worked so far, it now claims to be 100% charged constatnly, so i'm currently running the battery down to see what happens.
did you ever find a solution to this?
Hello, just wanted to update the thread, after 1-2 months of the battery charging light always on, no matter what, it fixed all by itself as I was preparing to hard reset my phone, no BS, I swear. I took the phone in my hand and was debating if I should hard reset or just flash another radio rom, and bam, I saw the light go back to normal, blinking green. That day it went back to always on, but then it would fix itself, but finally it's back to normal. So I went ahead and flashed the official T-MO 2.26/ 2.26.11 ROM which downgraded my Radio from 2.61 back to 2.26.11 and replaced my OS and then I flashed the official T-MO 3.08/ 2.69.11 ROM which upgraded my IPL/SPL and Radio. I then flashed Dr. Dot's BlackDiamond 2.0 WM6 and applied the 2.69.11 radio fix on XDA Mobile 6 Release 3. My phone has been wonderful since, thanks everyone.
hi leewebster try this and let me know if it works for you
thanks Ricardo Cheing ,
your input helped as this problem started when i had charged my phone with wife's dopod m700 charger
any way after playing around for some time i figured a workaround for it
i did the regitry hack for disabling the charging via the usb,
powered off the device by pressing the power button then took out the battery and put it back and then powered the device and the problem was sorted also the phone now will not charge when connected to the comp
now if i enable the charging via the usb then the problem returns
hope this is of help to somebody
ps: registry for disabling charging via usb
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/DRIVERS/BUILTIN/usbfndrv
enablineUsbcharging change the value to "0" (for disabling)
and
"1" (for re enabling)
Thanks for this tip, I have added a reference to this thread in the Wizard Wiki
just to update
today i re enabled the charging via the usb by making the registry hack , powered down the phone took out the battery and then restarted the device and was pleasently surprised to see that the device no longer had the solid amber light
device is working absolutely fine
Sweet hack
Hi, The post about disabling USB charging does indeed cure the charge light on all the time. Now the battery status works correctly. Only drawback was I use a cradle to charge with a USB plugged into a wall adapter. It won't work because of the USB being disabled and I mistakenly assumed since it was plugged into the wall it would although USB is USB whether powered from wall or computer. The factory AC adapter charges it fine though and the annoying light on all the time is gone. SWEET!! I will also re-enable it just to see if it remains gone like you did after a few days, and hopefully it will. If it doesn't I can live with it the way it is now
Thanks for the post!

Problem with battery charging

Hi,
I have a problem during charging my battery in HTC Iolite.
LED which mean charging can stay yellow for many, many hours. For example today my device was charging from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (9 hours), and the LED didn't change to green.
It change just when I twice use soft-reset and few times plug and unplug the battery charger cord.
Any one know what's the problem?
Best regards,
Radek
I have the same problem, but if i'm recharging the iolite from my computer via the USB cable it works properly and it turns green. Is this a common problem? Anyone else has this strange behaviour?
Maybe the wrong AC/DC - unit? Look at the backside. 230V or 110V input? (for instance from USA or some asian countries)

2nd idea: you have a AC/DC ad. from a navigation-unit? Try it, so you see, is the adaptor or the phone defect.
Greetings
I don't think, it is phone or charger problem. Mine does the same (orange light for about 5 hrs). At first, I thought, it has something to do with SEX Battery enhancer, but I think, problem is somewhere else. Device is fully charging maybe for 2 hrs (just guessing) and when it is near full charge, it slows charging current. My laptop is doing it in the same way - Quick charge to 95 %, then slow to 100 %.
Also whe you use WiFi, BT or data connection, battery is draining and charging all the time. With combination above, it might be charging all day.
This is just my guess, but very probable one.

I'll try to charge via USB next time or in the car.
But so far I've used original AC/DC and second one from HTC Trinity. Both are 110-240V, 5V, 1A. And nothing has changed.
I have also a HTC Touch HD... but in my opinion it's not AC/DC problem.
Maybe should I change ROM or something?

... but in power settings (information tab) is a date of "last full charge" which changed when LED turns green...
My laptop charge to 100% in about 3-4 hours when I'm using it (2 hours when turn off), and after that battery is "unpluged" and working only on AC/DC. I think it's to prevent from battery damage because of still being charged.
Change ROM is not so easy, because are no many working ROMs avaiable (CID-lock!), only the oiginal ROMs. I think, torrentonly is on the right way.
I have the SEX-Battery-Enhancer on my phone too, my LED will be green after a while. You have any data scessions on, for instance bluetooth or AGPS?
I was disable all data connections, make the weatherupdate and internet with ActiveSync or wifi. With AdvancedConfig I was disabled the "auto data connection" and enabled the power management. My battery runs one week with normal using (ca. 3-4 calls per day and ca. 1/2 hour per day playing with any apps) 4-5 hours needed the loading from ca. 15% to 100%

If you mean the car charger kit, than I can say that when the last time I used the phone as a GPS it was fully charged after 1 hour (it was just half way charged when I connected it) and the green light came on just fine. This is a mistery
I use a AC/DC from my old Navi, have a mini-USB-plug. They have more power (the Volt is the same) and it works only with 230V~. Yesterday i was tested the original Power unit from Iolite - works too.
Now, when Palingo not makes data connection, maybe it works now?
Greetings
the device actually stops charging, but the led doesn't turn green
You can sense this - htc not being worm after a while (when it finishes charging)
If you soft reset the device, the led will turn green immediatly and the battery level will be 100%
So I guess it's something software based

My Iolite is from official HTC distributor, with original HTC ROM and without SIMLOCK. If I decide to update firmware I'll probably use original HTC ROM, but I don't know is there any newer than mine? And where can I find it? On HTC site?
I have:
ROM 1.09.479.3 (40104)
ROM date 01-16-09
RADIO 0.41.30.12
How CID-lock works?
I've installed SEX-Battery-Enhancer and going to plug AC/DC again We'll see what happen with LED
BTW: My battery runs about 3-4 days (in Trinity 2-3), but I turn-off phone radio for night (24:00-8:30).

You can sense this - htc not being worm after a while (when it finishes charging)
If you soft reset the device, the led will turn green immediatly and the battery level will be 100%
So I guess it's something software based

I have exactly the same. But yesterday even after two or three soft resets LED didn't turn green.
Amazing
I've noticed this too - although it doesn't happen everytime. I'm pretty sure it's a software related issue as the charging itself works properly. The only trouble is with the battery indicator/led. I don't feel like hard-resetting my device yet though. Anyone here had the problem since the beginning? Maybe some of recently installed Apps made it work buggy (?).
Following apps have been installed in my device in period when I noticed this issue (maybe the list is not absolutely complete):
2_Way_Plus_InCall_Recording
FingerKeyb-2.1-QVGA-Giannis86
FingerSuite.v1.11
MobileMonger1.2
mobireader
MortPlayer-3.3-en
nitrogen-0.3.2-wm6
QuickMark-HTC-Niki-v3.8r4474
S2P-0.58-QVGA
VAlert
(Personally, I am little suspicious about S2P...)
My other thought is that my device totally ran out of the battery life before I noticed the problem for a first time. Maybe also this could be connected to the issue somehow...
So, 3 questions:
Did you notice the problem since the beginning or just recently after using the device for a few days already?
[*]If not, did you install any of the apps above (or any other you are suspicious about)?
[*]Didn't you make your battery flat before your first notice of the issue?
Got no more ideas right now...
light problem
I found some bugs concerning this indicator light.
- I tried a new carholder (Brodit) and thought that this was not the good one, because the light was still green. After trying to plug it just "in the wall" it was also still green.
So I gave it a soft reset and after that everything worked: any powersource made it turn orange.
- If I receive a message or an email there's no change. The indicator does not flash orange. Never. And all settings are just fine: warning (sound) and flash.
edit: according to the manual it should flash green when a message or mail is received. Problem is that there's no difference, because it's always flashing green.

1/ Yes, I have this problem from the first charging using AC/DC
2/ I don't use any of these apps so I can't tell you anything about them.
3/ I'm always charging battery when it's not less than 10%-30%
Yesterday I made a small trip, so I use car charger. Original from HTC. And after 2 hours LED turned into green.
So... What's the problem?!
I have the same problem.
I have the italia rom, when i charge the phone with PC usb it's ok, when i charge with the power adapter the only way for charge is shut down the phone and in 1 hour the charge is completed!
Same problem here
I have bought the Iolite two days ago and it have the same problem described in this thread.
The green light of battery charged doesn't appear and the PDA is always hot (even when it is turned off).
I try to hard reset and recharging it and it works fine, but after few hours it begin again: the phone became hot and the battery drains out in a few hour and if i try to recharge the green light never appear (it stay all night with the AC plug).
Anyone have some ideas?
thanks
e.
PS I have the Italian ROM too.

Last ful charge information not updating

I charge my phone to full (till green light appears though sometimes while off), but the battery information in settings still show some old 'Last charging Date' and talktime, etc figures are also not reset.
Is it a bug that this information is not getting reset automatically at every full charge.

Hey does no body is facing the same problem for battery information!!
Hi pgu,
I m also having the same pblm..But I have noticed that when you switch off the TD2 and charge to full...the battery information is not getting updated and is working fine when you charge by keeping the phone on..
try charge ur topaz while its power on..and check if its updated...
Yeah, the same here.
It seems when the Operating system is not awake it doesn't know when the battery is charged.
yeah...I've tried this...when we charge the phone with phone ON, then that info is updated. But many a times phone never shows green charging light when ON...I think this is some bug in TD2 which has been discussed in some other forum also...
The same problem for me about time of last charging but no problem with green light.

Dead HD2 - Can't power/boot up

Update at post #26 (handset returned from HTC alive and well)
Urgent help required please guys - help me rescue my very poorly HD2!
Phone is completely dead at the moment. Battery is completely dead and attempts to charge it are not working - however I'm sure it's not the battery that's the problem!
I've been flashing different radio roms this last couple of days going from 2.08.50.05 to .08 and back yesterday to .05 because while on .08, the back of phone was getting really hot and the battery was draining very quicky. Late yesterday afternoon it discharged completely while I had it on-charge!
Since then it's remained dead! Initial attempts to re-charge saw the orange LED come on for a minute or two, at which time I tried a hard-reset but it froze at the point of making the selection to hard-reset after the brief bootloader screen. On one more occasion the LED came on for say 10 seconds before disappearing again and since then - nothing!
Taking the battery out for all of last night and at least 20 times today has made no difference. Trying to charge it via (original) charger and via usb cable has not worked. No LED, no charge (though interestingly it still gets warm at the back when on charge), can't boot, no response, nothing, nada.
Helpful guy in O2 shop spent 40 mins helping me out earlier today (he's a XDA forum user who flashes custom roms from here too on his HD2). He took his charged battery and put it in mine with pretty much same result! White HTC bootscreen came on for a few secs before dying again. Couldn't start/boot up my phone using his good battery, yet after putting my battery in his phone he was able to begin to charge it, proving I think that, it's not battery that's to blame for this, but an internal fault with the power-unit of the hardware, (and/or perhaps with the charging port).
I'm convinced that the power-unit is the major issue, and that as it seems to be over-heating quicky, then it shuts down immediately from doing anything. I could be wrong of course.
Sorry for the lengthy story guys, but now feeling really low that I can't seem to sort this. If I cant start it up or get to the bootloader screen then I'm not going to be able to flash a stock rom to get this problem fixed under warranty, so as you can see, I'm really frustrated!
Any help, advice, suggestions etc would be gratefully received and much appreciated too! Thanks in anticipation.
Edit: sorry should have said that I've extensively read these forums today and found many similar (but not exact same) threads/posts, hence the new thread.
hapened the same to me, radio 2.08.. to 2.05... white screen HTC freeze....not booting.
my solution was press the two sound boutons at same time, when the screen write HTC apears....them booting at radio specs...them press one more time de 2 sound boutons sf same time....
it solve for me the booting...is strange this issuie of downgrade the radio 2.08... to 2.05..
good luck.

Thanks pack21, but at the moment I can't get it to do anything at all - it won't start, it won't go into bootloader, and I can't charge it. I'd be happy to see anything on the screen at all right now! Thanks again.
since it cant boot why dont you take it back to HTC? They will first have to repair it since they dont know it has been flashed with an unofficial firmware....They might even give you a new device!

Yeah, that's what I'm going to have to do as a last resort, but my fear is that with their tech/tools, they'll figure a way to power it up or get it into bootloader and discover it has a custom rom, and return it to me unfixed. This is almost certainly a hardware fault, as I believe it has always been warmer (sometimes very hot) at the back than it should be, but trying to prove it would be difficult. It would be great if I did return it and they couldn't boot it, but I only want to return it this way as a last resort. Here's hoping someone out there might have another solution.
Can you power the phone up with the charger and usb lead plugged into it?
Have you tried booting wth the SD card out?
If you can at least boot it up then you could try MTTY to see if that helps.
Post your outcomes back up and lets see what else we can do to help.

Thanks for input WB - I note you've helped many others out on other threads with related problems.
Can't power up the phone by any method (AC charger or USB), and because it's got no power, I can't boot it at all. Tried it without SD card earlier, and it didn't make any difference. Even with someone else's battery in earlier, it wouldn't boot up or charge even, so I'm at a complete loss. Always thought I'd need to try MTTY sometime soon - just didn't know my device might die on me before then (and its only 5 weeks old). Any other thoughts?

Hmmm, tough one this.
I know that some of the newer roms are particular about which radio you have installed else you get a problem not dissimilar to yours, ie the device won't get past the boot screen. Yours being completely dead is a new one on me.
Do you remember what radio and what rom were on the device just before this happened?

Yeah, was on 2.08.50.05 until 2 days ago, flashed 2.08.50.08 to give it a try but noticed it was draining battery fast and getting v hot at the back, so reverted yesterday to .05 (but maybe too late, maybe damage was already done, because total discharge happened shortly after that yesterday).
Hey guys (WB and any others with any possible solutions), I need to hit the pillow (11.45 pm my time now and I need to be up 5.45 am), but please keep posting any ideas that you want that you might have, and I'll give them at go first thing at 5.46 am. Thanks very much in anticipation!
I think Kholk of the Eugenia project has done a lot of work with radio roms. PM him (nicely) and see if he can help.

Thanks for suggestion WB. I'll pm Kholk in a moment - whilst it could indeed be the radio rom that caused the overheating and/or discharge, it seems that whatever caused it was catastrophic because I still can't get any charge into it, and hence I can't boot it up!
I hope sincerely other HD2 owners do not suffer this same problem at any time - it's proving a nightmare to fix.
My advice to all would be ignore those who promote the idea of allowing your battery to fully discharge - especially if it follows an over-heating handset - you may never recover from it (like me at the moment)!
If anyone's got any other suggestions for getting my handset powered/booted up - I'd be delighted to hear them. Really don't want to return to HTC with a custom rom on it!
The Radio ROM contains software parts that are critical to your device (at least for HTC devices) as it contains the OEMSBL (the radio bootloader) that boots ... ALL!
So, if you flash a wrong Radio ROM (as for example flashing a Diamond radio on Leo, or every radio that is not compatible with Leo: remember that for Diamond/Blackstone/X1/Raphael the radios were compatible) you'll get a totally bricked and unrecoverable (if not using JTAG!) device.
BUT.
You've flashed a Radio ROM and your device booted successfully, so, no errors during the flash process.
Assured that this Radio ROM is compatible with every HTC HD2 (TMOUS and EU), this Radio can't have produced an hardware fault on your Leo: it's almost certain that it is a coincidence that your Leo died with this Radio!
Anyway:
1. Be sure that your battery contacts are sane: check that they coincides with battery contacts: if you swap fast a battery you can do a wrong gesture with your hands and fold youre device's battery contacts.
2. Check the battery LED near the speaker: does it power on? (orange/green)
If the battery contacts are sane and the battery LED doesn't power on, maybe your battery is fault OR it is really completely discharged: on my old NEC e606 if the battery was completely discharged (0A, 0V) I had to charge it "manually".
However, if these two steps aren't helping, try this:
1. Take an AC adapter of maximum 5 Volts, or an USB cable
2. Cut off the end of the AC adapter (or the other end of an USB cable) and connect positive on battery positive and negative(GND) on battery negative.
3. Make sure that the cables are correctly connected and that your power source (AC Adapter / USB Cable) is connected and/or powered on.
4. Mantain this position for 5 minutes: your battery will take some power (yes, it is a really raw charging process)
5. Don't wait more than 5 minutes: it is a raw charging process and it will never stop! (well, not never, but if you wait for too much time, you'll **** your battery!)
6. Battery slightly charged: disconnect it from your power source, take it into your HTC HD2 and connect its battery charger.
If it works, well, you're saved, but I think that there is a fault with your HD2 because for a complete discharge of your battery you have to wait for weeks....or months! Or even years!
If that doesn't work, try with another spare battery that is known to work.
If your HTC HD2 doesn't work even with another battery, RMA it, HTC won't see that you've flashed an HardSPL, a new Radio and a custom ROM because they'll simply replace your mainboard.
Let me know how it goes!
Hope that this helped.

Hey kholk, huge respect for taking the time to consider this serious problem of mine! Thank you for the different options - I'll work my way through them and see if any can bring my HD2 back to life.
I can confirm that I've successfully flashed roms and radios (via SD) and never had any problems, and I think you're right - it wasn't the switching between 2.08.50.05 to .08 and back to .05 - it was probably just a coincidence that the unit got seriously hot and discharged at the same time as I used .08 (hence the reason I had just re-flashed .05 when it happened).
Battery contacts are good - checked them carefully yesterday.
I'm convinced the battery is as dead/discharged as it could be; since yesterday morning I've not even had a glimpse of an orange LED when connected to AC or USB charger (though the unit continues to get warm at the back, but doesn't get hot any more). I'll try your ideas for getting some life into it, and I've got a replacement battery on order, but as I found out with a friend's spare battery, it still won't boot up or allow itself to be charged.
I think therefore that it will ultimately need to go back, but I'm grateful for your assurance that HTC are unlikely to know that I've got HSPL/Custom Rom and Radio on there! Many thanks again for now (its so re-assuring to know that if you come across occasional difficulties, there's some good guys on these forums who will try to help bail you out)!

That's 2 bad nights sleep now, as this happened day before yesterday . Thanks - fingers crossed eh, both for getting mine fixed, and for hoping this is not going to become a common problem for other HD2 owners!
Well, if the device won't power up even with a known good battery, then HTC isn't able to power it on magically. Your hardware got a fault and the only fix for this is replacing the faulty part.
And no, HTC won't desolder and resolder a chip on your mainboard: they'll replace it completely!
I'm sorry for your dead HTC HD2 and I know how you're feeling... I've experienced the same.

Thanks again kholk. Reading what you've written confirms for me that there's not likely to be an easy fix for this and so I should give up on that idea now and just get it returned sooner rather than later for a warranty repair. If anything develops from this I'll be sure to post an update for the benefit of anyone else who might experience the same difficulty. Much appreciated again for now!

I had very similar issue on my X1 when I left it plugged into my car by accident, it totally drained the battery and wouldn't do anything other than blip a red light.
I swapped to my spare battery and the phone booted once, said low battery (was fully charged the day before) then did the same red light.
After much fiddling, it turned out that I had to leave it on charge for around 12 hours for the battery to kick back into life and boot the phone. Then it took a further few hours to charge it again!
Older devices could only be chared with a HTC stock charger (when having a dead battery), cause they delivered a little more power then custom AC chargers (like the one for your BT headset).
