First Official review of the O2 Xda Guide online - Touch Cruise 2 General

www.4Winmobile.com are proud to announce the first official review of the new O2 Xda Guide which you can find online here:
http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/4wm-reviews-hardware/20368-o2-xda-guide.html
The O2 Xda Guide
Over recent years O2 announced and brought to the marketplace the Orbit 2 and Ignito devices which featured: 3Mpixel cameras, fast processors, large RAM / ROM, GPS, Quad band phone, Touch interface, etc. The range has now been extended with the svelte and small Xda Guide which is engineered as a fully functional phone with a definite slant towards GPS and navigation use.
Again a rounded candy-bar design (no hardware keyboard) the Guide sports:
3.2MPixel camera, 528Mhz processor, QVGA (320 x 240 display), Quad band, large ROM / RAM, A-GPS, 3G phone / video phone, Touch FLO 2D interface, etc
We'll look at its features as we move through the review and see if the Guide does carry on the traditions of the Xda series.....
Once more we extend our thanks to the generous folks at O2 for allowing us to review the Xda Guide.

xda3 confirmed

I received some more detailed information about T-Mobile's next coming Pocket PC Phone Edition (called MDA III) which is indeed a HTC device called "Blue Angel" (as you know, OEMs always give their devices internal project names. The first xda/MDA was called "Wallaby", the Xda II/MDA II was called "Himalaya" and the expected and confirmed MDA III is called "Blue Angel" now).
However, the information I've received are slightly different than the stuff announced before:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PC Phone Edition
CPU: - Intel XScale, 400 MHz
Memory: 64 MB Flash ROM, 128 MB SDRAM
Screen: 3.5", 240 x 320 pixels Transflective TFT-LCD
Connectivity: GSM/GPRS, Bluetooth, 802.11b, IrDA and USB
Camera: Color CMOS VGA camera
Integrated QWERTY keyboard
Size: 125 x 71.6 x 18.7 mm = 4.92 x 2.82 x 0.73 in
Expansion: MMC/SDIO
I hope it will not be the truth. If MDA III / XDA III is coming with such config, I have no reason to upgrade my XDA2.
Here is what I expected for XDA III / MDA III :
1. VGA Resolution screen - Almost all high-end PPC will come with a 640 X480 screen, there is no way come with a 320x240 screen with XDA3 if they still want to sell it at US$999 sky high price.
2. Faster Processor - I think the battery life for XDA2 is reasonable, and the new generation processor should consume the same level battery as the PXA263.
I DON'T NEED A KEYBOARD. I use pda for 7 year since , I KNOW HOW TO USE A STYLUS TO INPUT WHATEVER I NEED.
Moreover, WIFI is not a MUST HAVE feature for a Pdaphone. Leave it for the SDIO interface. Give me a Dual SD Slot if you have extra space for the WIFI module.
If this machine is really the XDA3/MDA3, I believe it will like XDA1 / MDA1, and it will not success, because the config will be out-dated when it release.
Heh
Xda 2.5 - FaceLift Model?
Hopefully they'll lose the keypad for the true Xda III.
No VGA?
No PXA270?
No 530/624MHz CPU?
No WM2003SE?
No 1800/3800mAh batt?
No Widcomm BT stack?
No High-Speed SDRAM?
Sad.
These photos are appearing on forums all over the place now I too hope it isn't the real XDA III as there is nothing there to justify an upgrade in my eyes.
Ed
I shure hope this is a sick joke, i´d hate this to be the XDA III. It´s just such a dissapointment. I love the XDA II, and there is absolutely no reason to upgrade to this one. Besides, who want´s to buy another kind of memory. I already have 3 SD cards at 256Mb. Should i just toss those away!?
No, i shure hope this is not the acutall XDA III, but just a way of beeing a greedy company.

What kind of different memory?!
It's said to have SDIO slots, perhaps two of them.
You can use your SD cards as much as you want...
Integrating a thumb board into the XDA3 is a real waste of space and weight, i prefer to use the stylus on the virtual keyboard in preference to a thumb board, and if i want to use a keyboard with it i want a separate one connected by bluetooth that i can touch type on,
Dual SD slots is a must for my next device too, or at least a CF and an SD slot, but CF takes up too much space nowdays
wonder if it's that much less expensive for tmobile to push mda3's then mda2 because it dont seem all that different
so odd that there would be a market spc for the mda3 compared to mda2
XDA III
It looks as though the keyboard is detachable.
Wireless is a big deal, as SD 802.11 cards are expensive and wireless is everywhere
The keyboard does not look detachable to me, I think it looks like it is integrated..
Like one of the smaller nokia phones I think it looks like the unit is made up of two pieces the front unit and a back unit. The front unit would slide up wards against the back unit, revealing the keyboard section. which is on the bottom part of the back unit...
We need to remember, that they are probably targeting a slightly differant market with this unit; The people who are more for phones than for PDA's, the phone type of people would probably go for the keyboard cos it will be easier for them to text and SMS. MEanwhile the PDA' type people can keep using their stylus in the method they are used to.
THere are proabably lots of people who looked at the XDAII unit but didn't buy because of the lack of a keyboard....
kinda like this siemens mobil
http://www.smartpress.gr/weekly/adv/siemens.gif
with the keyboard that is
hi
more interresting to me is how to use this keyboard....
It might just be my opinion, but this seems all awful small to me, remember the whole keyboard is maybe 6cm wide.
How to you hold your XDA3 in order to typ... do you have to lay it down on the table, do you use two thumbs, or one hand typs the other holds, or... I don't know
Many questions..., someone has a answer ?
Alex
guess you could use the stylus ?
Hi,
If you want more pictures, go there.
These are CDMA CU928 pictures.
Didn't found on the web where CDU928 could be used as XDA III in 900/1800 Networks... Even on T-Mobile's website.
By the way, I personaly find it is a good idea to integrate a keyboard in next Xda III if size and weight do not increase, like suggest pictures.
Serge
Serge,
they write something about Qualcomm's MSM5500 chipset as modem, this modem is CDMA2000 which is AFAIK not compatiple to UMTS (someone might know better)
But for sure it is not dual mode, so you won't most likely don't see it in europe as here UMTS only phone aren't sold by big providers.
Alex.
I've used the PalmOne Treo 600 for almost a year and really appreciated the keypad, regardless of its tiny size. Hence, including a keypad per se isn't a bad idea at all. That said, however, the core goal, at least in my opinion, should be to increase memory/functionality AND decrease size/weight. So despite the Wi-Fi capability and keypdad, the XDA III is no alternative for me.
True enough, the addition of the keypad and the Wifi doesn"t justify the upgrade to this XDA 3 ... for new buyer it might be a good investment though
I asked the distributer in sweden (www.qtek.se) about this device as an upcoming qtek 3030. They said it won´t be sold here, and that there will be a new device with VGA screen and wifi!!
it seems a little unfair that after they just released the xda2 out comes xda3 these phones are costly and i think a bit of consideration for there present customers wouldnt go amiss.

New phone: TyTn killer

http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/11/toshibas-g900-qwerty-hsdpa-tytn-killer/
What a phone !
Glad that I have not bought TyTn yet I will wait this phone for sure !
Amazing resolution at last !
for me the true killer of the TyTn is the HTC and the scarce quality that it uses for producing his ppcs...
HTC=scarce quality High costs
Too many unknowns about that one at the moment.
Could be a good one, the design looks a bit of a dogs breakfast though.
Size?
Mike
If it's Quad band and supports US 3G then it's a TyTn killer otherwise for us in the USA it won't be
PPC??
As far as I know it will not run with WM5 nor WM6. Screenshots suggest a total different OS. Go with it - but it will not replace my TyTN
It's not quad band and the GUI is flash.
Cool phone but lousy plaform and no north-american love.
The WM6 version of the LG Prada will end up more useful even if it is just EDGE.
It is running WM6 !
Check this side-by-side with TyTn:

The behemoth features, as we mentioned an utterly unreal 3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, rear biometric scanner, 2 megapixel rear camera, front-facing video conferencing camera, 64MB of internal memory, miniSD expansion, tri-band HSDPA (yes!), 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, USB, video calling, and USB On-The-Go. The E01 is far more lower end, but still manages HSDPA, a 65k color display, A2DP Bluetooth, and that same 2 megapixel camera. ...

No way is this a TyTN killer, the only way to kill off the hermes is for the major networks to start using this, but they have it WAAAAAAY to easy with HTC at the moment. I can see it doing well but it has alot of catching up to do (especially with the major developments we have made on here with WM6, SSPL and HardSPL etc....)
The thing that puts me off that is the big border around the screen! I really think the TyTN looks smarter (I'm going entirely on looks here).
My Orange SPV M3100 (which is a HERM100 with silver/black colour scheme) is still the sexiest-looking phone I've ever seen.
You lucky bastard, I got the horrible T-Mobile Vario II - Never seen a phone being branded so ugly...

How can you be a TYTN killer and not have a 5 way D-Pad? The only thing you can improve on the TYTN is put iTunes on it, maybe make it slimmer, and if it can do my taxes, hahahah.
But really, with this XDA community, I am sure we will have the latest and greatest for while to come. You can increase magapixels all you want, but this is still a slick device.

HTC Touch Dual -Will original Touch owners feel the love?

Okay the new virtual keyboard, contacts app, photos app, home screen and gestures all look great with the Touch Dual, but will original touch owners be able to enjoy this by way of an update? Ive heard nothing. Im a bit pissed actually, I know technology moves fast but the Touch is only 4 months or so old, its still a relatively new device and I feel HTC sold me half a product.
have a look
As quoted on techtree.com
After a successul release in Japan, HTC now plans to officially launch the Touch Dual mobile phone for Europe. The Touch Dual measures 107x55x15.8-mm and weighs 120-grams. It supports WCDMA/HSDPA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access/High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) 2100MHz and GSM/EDGE 900/1800/1900MHz networks. It also features the TouchFLO interface over Windows Mobile 6 Professional and a 2.6" QVGA touch-screen and is powered by a 400MHz Qualcomm MSM7200 processor. It comes with 256MB flash, 128MB RAM, and microSD expansion; Bluetooth 2.0+EDR; 802.11b/g WiFi; HTC ExtUSB (HTC's mini USB 2.0 jack with support for data and audio); and a battery to keep you talking for upto 240 mins on WCDMA and upto 360 minutes on GSM frequencies.

doubtful,.. but hope dies last!
There will be an update for the keyboard.. that's sure ! but for the rest we will see... it seems possible to have everything "software" if the rom are quite the same.. but we can't say this without the touch dual roms.
HTC promises the keyboard for the touch .... but for the rest.. nothing is said yet.
Ofcourse they aint gonna give that to us. They want you to buy the 'new and better' Touch. They already have your money, but they want mmmoooOOORE!
*ahwem*
Anyway, there might be a chance we get it for the Touch. And otherwise I'm sure someone will be able to get it from the Touch Dual .
But looking at how succesful the Touch is in sales, this is the moment for HTC to show how they are in the after sales.
Coming from the s100 and s200 I'm not too confident in all this though, but we'll see!
some of the new features for the dual is surely plus for me. i don't like the smaller screen and bulkiness of the unit compared to the touch. but who knows, when i see it personally on shops, i might get one also to play with.
i think pdaviet or another developer will include this functions to their roms for prophet and old htc touchs.
No wifi
I dont think we will want to wait for HTC to release an update for these features. This sounds like a job for.... someone else. I bet a developer will write a app that will implement these features. Touch Dual looks great, I like the direction HTC is going but not giving this device Wlan is really lame. It's also being released as the O2 XDA Star, but quadband.
No wifi? As far as I can see wifi is one of the features....in previous specs I've seen GPS - which is missing now - which would be for me the only reason to swich
GPS
Do you think GPS is on board, but disabled???

one of the things that made me switch to Htc Touch was wifi. Since the HTC Slide doesnt have wifi, then i dont think its worth the change
The lack of wifi let me down too.
I've been waiting for the new touch with 3.5G, but no wifi is a big no no for me. Let's see if they update the software on the original touch, if they do, I'll buy one, if they don't, I won't buy any of them, I'll just wait. Form factor wise, I think the original touch is cooler
Yep, my ideal phone (at the minute) would be the Touch, but with built-in GPS, a faster processor and larger storage. But processor and storage don't bother me too much (overclocked and a 6GB memory card) so only issue is the lack of built-in GPS - means I have to use a separate bluetooth GPS, which is rather inconvenient at times
David
400mhz
400mhz is awfully fast. the touch is 201, i think most people can get it running close to 300 with overclocking but that just means the new one is gonna scream, nothing better than streaming porn to classmates and coworkers via bluetooth!
seriously though, the tech upgrades alone might be worth picking one up, espcially considering it will probably have the same customization options our touches have now.
i just love my touch and wouldn want any other phone now! it just has everything and i like the fact that the only keys are the ones to make calls...
i dont mine useing the touchkeyboard and the 201MHr are enough i think...
gps doesnt bother me neither... only people with a bad sence of orentation need pgs
Hi
Does anyone know on what network the touch dual is going to be released in the uk?
Is it going to be available on t-mobile? If so when?
Thanx

hey guys !
watch this rewiew of the htc touch dual
http://smape.com/en/reviews/htc/HTC_Touch_Dual-rev.html
wow i just read the review, it seems the old Touch is better at quite a number for stuff especially graphics and many multimedia.
With the higher price, minus Wifi, and smaller screem, we (with the old touch) shouldnt feel too bad guys

Htc Diamond!!

This phone looks really cool, and i thought i would share it with you.
The May 6th event in London in London is drawing ever closer. It is still three days away, and our mouths are already watering for the HTC Diamond. The presumed highlight of the show, will be the HTC Diamond. Now, instead of the low quality spy shots we have seen, we finally have some awesome images. Also, we have the rumored specifications of the device. Strap in, because this is some exciting stuff.
For media, there is a 3.2 megapixel camera, 4GB of internal storage with MicroSD expansion still on the table, FM radio and a 2.8 inch glorious VGA screen. This things rocks Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, and has the hardware to back it up, with a 528MHz CPU monster. Connectivity is a sure thing, with HSDPA 7.6mbps, and WiFi, you are ready for all the high speed you can handle. To round out the feature list, it has a slide out QWERTY, quad band GSM, a rumored accelerometer, and is 10.7mm thick

This is true and I had thought of posting my Themes in this section which others have but, I posted them in general instead. Making a theme isn't development IMO as compared to making the killer app iTask.
That thing is ugly
Sorry for posting in the wrong section!! =(
really ugly !!! The front looks good, but the BACK !!!
vga is great, but the screen isnt bigger than others, why ? and does it still have just 64000 colors ?
The cpu is good, but this is no real milestone, and really uggly design sorry. Reminds me of the ugly corners of the touchcruise.
But you are all right, this is all definitly wrong here.
hohoho
LG KC1 is Marvell Monahans 806 MHz CPU
I think it's beautiful all the way. The back is painted with an optical illusion that it looks like a diamond, where in fact it's just flat. Brilliant!
Have you guys ever heard of buzz marketing?
This is exactly what this DaVince boy is doing.
I hope for him that he makes some good money out of this.
BTW the HTC Diamond brings in some step changes and not the quantum leap he alluded to.

This is a continuation of the Touch series. There is no QWERTY slide out keyboard.
Enough to make me not buy it, sadness.
does HTC fix the video driver problem with the Diamond?
I was thinking of buying a Diamond for Mother's Day for my wife who is enjoying her Wizard. I was assuming that the video performance problem that exists with the Touch, the Kaiser, the Athena, etc., etc. is fixed in the Diamond, but I'd like to be sure.
My Wizard and my Cingular 2125 perform better than my Tilt and my Athena. By perform better, I mean screen redraws; doing things like changing orientation, or using the Camera, or scrolling in a web page, are painfully slow on the Tilt and the Anthena. I don't own a Touch, so I don't know first hand, but I believe the Touch is listed on http://www.htcclassaction.org/.
Since the Diamond is in the Touch family, I am concerned that it will have the same video performance issues. I'm not up enough on which chipset use which drivers.
Does anyone know if HTC has fixed the video driver problem in the Diamond?

Which PDA to replace an XDA Exec/Orange M5000/Jasjar?

My XDA Exec is a couple of years old now and I'm wondering what to replace it with when I need to.
The criteria are:
Minimum 3.5 inch screen
Windows Mobile O/S
Excel, Word and Outlook
A qwerty keyboard, but can be an on-screen one
Quad band phone
Bluetooth
I have done some research and the PDA phones seem to have smaller screens these days apart from the HTC Advantage. What others should I take a look at?
check the Touch HD (blackstone) or wait for the Touch HD Pro (if you want the slide keyboard). It's new, it has a big screen (3.8 WVGA) and it's still a lot smaller than the Uni.

We all Uni users are waiting to get a REAL replacement of our beloved Uni!
I did do a search but didn't find what I was looking for, possibly didn't use the right search criteria.
The Touch HD Pro looks like a contender. I will have to consider that one.

If you are comming from Universal maybe HD is not the best option
As you may know NOT ANY virtual keyboard can be compared with the confortably and speed of a physical one.
Have you saw Touch pro 2? so far is the closest to a "succesor" for our beloved Uni´s
Now that looks very nice!
you should take a look at the xperia x1. it's my chosen successor, but i haven't got is yet.

If I where you I would keep the UNI!
I have had almost all HTC devices that exists, and I can honestly say that the UNI is the best!
Dont even consider the new devices with the qualcom chipset, if you read around this forum you will learn that they have many problems! (Missing drivers, under performing, etc etc...)
The only other device I can recommend is the Samsung Omnia!
But that device only has a on screen keyboard!
Just my 2 cents!
