Which PDA to replace an XDA Exec/Orange M5000/Jasjar? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

My XDA Exec is a couple of years old now and I'm wondering what to replace it with when I need to.
The criteria are:
Minimum 3.5 inch screen
Windows Mobile O/S
Excel, Word and Outlook
A qwerty keyboard, but can be an on-screen one
Quad band phone
Bluetooth
I have done some research and the PDA phones seem to have smaller screens these days apart from the HTC Advantage. What others should I take a look at?

check the Touch HD (blackstone) or wait for the Touch HD Pro (if you want the slide keyboard). It's new, it has a big screen (3.8 WVGA) and it's still a lot smaller than the Uni.

Do a search before making a new thread with the same topic
We all Uni users are waiting to get a REAL replacement of our beloved Uni!

I did do a search but didn't find what I was looking for, possibly didn't use the right search criteria.
The Touch HD Pro looks like a contender. I will have to consider that one.

If you are comming from Universal maybe HD is not the best option
As you may know NOT ANY virtual keyboard can be compared with the confortably and speed of a physical one.
Have you saw Touch pro 2? so far is the closest to a "succesor" for our beloved Uni´s

Now that looks very nice!

you should take a look at the xperia x1. it's my chosen successor, but i haven't got is yet.

Yeah, agree, upgrading from Uni it must have at least the same or more! (3.5" - 3.8")
And also design is not so nice...
Just my opinion

If I where you I would keep the UNI!
I have had almost all HTC devices that exists, and I can honestly say that the UNI is the best!
Dont even consider the new devices with the qualcom chipset, if you read around this forum you will learn that they have many problems! (Missing drivers, under performing, etc etc...)
The only other device I can recommend is the Samsung Omnia!
But that device only has a on screen keyboard!
Just my 2 cents!

Anything similar to Athena?

Is there any device in market or coming soon similar to Athena?
Important features included:
large screen (5" or above)
under $1000
long battery life
instant on
wifi, gps
weight about 1 lb
It should have more than one in this market segment.
Thanks!

Good question. I'm looking for it too. I was hoping that 7510 was going to be it, but no. It was a step backward instead of forward, from my perspective and based on the way I'm going to use it.
I would add FM radio, support High Capacity external memory cards, 5MB camera, fluid video recorder, television, more rounded and thinner than 7500/7510.
I would like it to maintain the existing aspect ratio and not move toward 480x800 for the sake of software compatibility. No thanks, I don't want a 2.8" screen.
As you can see, there is none in the market that meets my dream list. So I guess I'd be using my Athena for a long long time to come still.

question: All the things you've mentioned are included in the Athena, so why are you looking for something else????
Or if you don't mind a small screen and the absence of a keyboard, check out the Samsung Omnia: http://samsungomnia.com/
To be honest, if this had a better screen size, I would not consider saving up for the X7510, but nothing beats the screen of the Athena and Advantage as of now.

Indeed. You'd really appreciate Athena's (big) size when you're using e-reader program, pdf file viewer, SoftMakers (when in 92dpi especially), and internet browsing. You can see those otherwise too tiny fonts.

I am dying in waiting here... for the X7510. On The Go Solutions will have it in stock by tomorrow. I keep holding back because I am waiting for the price of the X7500 (brand new) to drop to at least $900. If I can't control myself, I'll be buying the X7510 by next week. But before I order, I still want to know that they have it in stock, because the release date keeps moving back.
I even purchased ahead of time the following: Brando Workshop's Ultra clear screen protector, LG HBM 700 BT Communicator, heck... I even ordered a customized belt holster from Nutshell in Horizontal Style that houses both the case and the X7510 with keyboard. I had to make sure I didn't messed up on the size specifications I provided, so I waited for some reviews to confirm it. I guess we'll know in a few days.
...
For my the Athena is the best device today even compared with with the newer devices about to be released, HTC had the chance to get out a much better device with the 7510 but they didn't deliver.
In my opinion the only better thing is they doubled the amount of memory to 16gb and that is solid state rather than a hard disk, so what (8GB micro SDs cost peanuts this days and 16gb will soon be out there) but not joypad or buttons.
I want my next device with a proper graphics chip and the most sensitive gps chip out there and a camera that actually deliver even in poor light conditions
I want the OS and applications as good as those made by Apple or better and for gods sake Athena it is a VGA device, I want VGA working out of the box.
a little more ram will hep too ( for speed) and the phone function should work flawless at all times.
transflective LCD screen any one?
those are the issues that if solved will make a difference to my, and yea they can be solved the proof is this forum and excelent roms and apps.
Is anybody from HTC reading this?
said this I still convinced than Athena+XDA develoers hard work is the best device out there even after a year.
right, I feel much better now
oh yea good try with the new keyboard but not good enough.
i was reading this thread... and i had the urge to bump it up.
lol.
ciao!
HTC SHIFT? A bit Bigger... but loses some of the mobile capabilities and batt life?
Three months later and the answer to this thread is still the same - the 7500 or 7501 are still the best on the market. 7510 gives up too much, and nothing else on the market has the screen size, battery life, instant on, wifi, bt, etc.
For me, the replacement model is the HTC Touch HD.
Touch HD
I am also intrigued by the Touch HD, but I can't see on its spec page if it has VGA out. I use my Advantage to hook up to a projector and run PowerPoint. (Maybe I need a pocket sized projector that takes an SD card instead?)
touch hd lacks the hardware keyboard and gps, right? but atleast maybe they already fixed the graphic card issue in touch hd.

Thank goodness there is no keyboard.
Athena screen size attracted me most, though its a little bulky.
Xperia X1 is my prefer choice, if it is 1 inch more.

i see, i must have misread that gps thingy somewhere.
While Touch HD is the best replacement today, I'm still waiting for a 4.5 inch minimmum screen, with FM and TV and joystick. I don't mind not having the other hardware buttons but I really really want the joystick.
I prefer no keyboard personally. Just want the same form factor as the Touch HD.
I'm intrigued by the t-mob G1

"a bit" bigger. nah, it is like several times bigger, i can take and post comparison photos
the truth is, while the shift is really small for a vista pc, the athena is incredibly small. (just don't compare it to normal phones )

X1 vs Touch HD

I'm nearly at the end of my contract for my T-mobile vario II. It looks like my next phone will either be the X1 or the touch HD. I read a lot of ebooks and web pages so the bigger screen is going to be great.
I like the fact that the X1 has a slide out keyboard and dpad. These should help when writing emails or playing games. However the simpler package of the Touch HD does look very nice.
One thing that sucked about the vario II was the sluggish interface - from the few videos I have watched the HD seems a bit slicker than the X1 - am I right?
If possible I would like to install android on my next device - is this more likely to be possible on the HD?
So what are your views - which is better?
Mercedes or BMW.
Two similar but quite different animals.
Need the keyboard... X1
Need no keyboard .. T' HD
It's simply a choice only. Some point or other.. a HardSPL and cooking of roms will be well underway.. along with a vast choice of rom shape and size, along with inbuilts. The only thing that will not change is the Hardware shape. (guts are the same)
The Touch HD is not even out properly, and the HD manilla is already available and installable on the X1. the Sony panels will no doubt hit the Touch HD.
I have bought 2 X1's..along with an Omnia... Will get a HD also.. but this is because i'm a picky sod.. and have money to pee away.
Please don't tell my wife!.
Well the Touch HD is technically using HTC's "2nd" version of TouchFlo3D, after Diamond/TPro, so understandably they've put some effort into getting it to run more smoothly. SE's panels will debut on the X1 so it's probably buggy just like TouchFlo3D was when the Diamond first came out.
That said, XDA got even the stock Diamond interface running really well, so there's no reason they can't do it with the X1's panels. It's not a question of if but when.
I think if you're going to reading most of the time, the HD will be the better choice (bigger screen, and you dont "need" a hardware keyboard to read). But I must say if you do a fair amount of messaging, a real keyboard is second to none -- there's just no going back after you've used one (imo).
As for Android, only time will tell. My guess is yes for both, but it might not be fully functional for some time. There are just too many unknowns right now for there to be an easy answer.

If you are so flush with cash feel free to mail me one of the X1's!
fhseih - I do read a lot and the physical size of the screen on the touch hd would be very nice for that. However the actual resolution of the X1 is the same so it should be almost as good in that respect. As you say, once you get used to the keyboard you never go back. I have got used to having a keyboard on my vario II. I love the way that you can type without wasting screen space on a virtual keyboard.
Maybe what I really want is a Touch HD Pro - any rumors that we will see one of these soon?

Even though i have capital... and enough to buy a handset i want when i want it on the network i choose to be with.. i am certainly no charity.. so i'm sorry.. if the second x1 goes anywhere its back to supplier... and get a HD instead.
I think getting a Touch HD pro is pointless.. HD is such because its not bulky. Its slim and basically a screen with a send and end key.
Adding a keyboard to it = not a Touch HD Pro but a X1.
Lack of G-sensor on X1 is the thing i think when it comes to using different roms and software. Hardware apart from this and keyb is the same. (except screen size...res is the same)
I think... i will keep one x1 and get a HD...
that way.. i'm covered.
Really wish the DX900 Glofiish had been released... 2 sim cards... one phone with VGA/GPS/WIFI/Bluetooth/3G/HSDPA .. but as yet.. its just due... due .. and due....

HOLY CRAP. . .
This isn't the new HD though, so maybe the HD is still going to be strong for a year(meaning no major updates to it, just internal hardware, like a US 3G antenna).
I dont think we will see an upgrade for the HD till later this year (if at all) but this in most peoples eyes will easily do for a HD with built in keyboard.

That new TPro is still sexy though , but they could have done with out the bezel and all the brushed aluminum(not saying that I don't like).
*sigh* it makes me confused to make a decision between Touch HD and Touch Pro2
Touch Pro2 contains lots of software impovements, espsecially a newer version TF3D,
however, the backplate which coloured in grey really... ugly ('cause I'm a grey-hater)
the Touch HD have a stylish design (in my opinion), but software are just out-dated
and there maybe not have any WM6.5 offical ROM provided, even an update of TF3D
Anyone can help me to make a choice?
My only concern is about the updating of software and any alternative colours of Touch Pro2

The Touch Pro 2 is just too heavy for me, the HD is bad enough...same old story, to keyboard or not to keyboard. The WhiteStone is supposed to be the replacement for the HD. Who knows when it will come. Personally I don't care to upgrade my HD because with these new devices come new roms, YES!

i fully believe that the new TouchFLO will be available to the HD thanks to XDA-DEVELOPERS
and i can't wait, it seems to have some nice additions and tweaks
o and WinMo 6.5 will definitely be available for the HD thanks to XDA-DEVELOPERS (not an official upgrade, but fully awesome)
not impressed
I'm not impressed, i have had three HTC Phones and all have been underpowered due lack of chipset drivers, I will be probably looking towards the omnia HD next, unless HTC decide to shell out the cash for licences for drivers. it winds me up no end that. made I was fooled yet again by HTC into buying one of their half finished handsets.
Its good more XVGA's are coming out as it means more supported apps. Maybe a google version might help us crack the RGB666 issue.
Hardware Keyboard
I sincerely beleive that the HD (aka beast, aka black stone) is currently the ultimate device. Most people who long for a hardware keyboard must have never used the TouchPal. I have done continuous testing and TouchPal allows me and most other people to type considerable faster. I DO RECCOMEND IT for anyone who has not tried it.
I love what I'm seeing with the new ROMs out there and I'm not worried at all that the brilliant minds of this community will bring it to the world best device. Heck, after WM 6.1 was ported to the BlueAngel than everything is possible here!
I love my HD and these new devices can't even hold a candle to it. 3.8 WVGA display, FM Radio, 5MP camera with Autofocus, GPS, front full 2nd VGA camera, 7 hardware buttons, magnetic stylus, expandable memeory via Micro SD (now up to 32GB) all in a form factor the same size as the iPhone! (who can beat that?!)
Only thing the HD's missing is US 3G support, and Video Out, and a capacitve touchscreen.
Damn I love my HD!!!!!

LOL yes many of us agree with you there!
I wonder if there's an exact launch date on this. I'm due for an upgrade soon.
Before getting the HD, I was a happy TyTN II user. Sure I wished for at least VGA and a larger screen but I was content (with the technology back then). But when the super sexy HD came out with WVGA and faster performance I was interested but the lack of keyboard held me back till I found out I could manipulate the screen to horizontal for any "serious typing" since the landscape keyboard was almost the same size in length as the physical keyboard. Now with FingerKeyboard (the black & red) I am completely satisfied. I gained light-weight and thin and able to type.
My next upgrade will be for windows 6.5 and the faster processor and video card!
I think my girlfriend will be pleased
I just pre-ordered the diamond2
expected delivery date: april 10th
I'm gonna be so lucky tonight

Damaged X1 - Planning to replace X1 with Touch Diamond 2?

Hi folks!
My X1 recently stopped working and I had to sent it back to amazon. Instead of repairing or replacing it they gave me just the money.
Now I'm not sure wether to buy a new X1 or another almost newer phone. I'm thinking of the HTC Touch Diamond 2. The main reasons for this thoughts are:
+ smaller form-factor considering the thickness
+ leight weight (117g instead 147g)
+ built-in touchflo (no need to flash)
+ announced winmo 6.5 upgrade
Drawbacks may be the missing hardwarekeyboard and flashlight and no panel support?!?!
Any comments or suggestions what to do?
greetinx,
gordonshamway
Hi, why not a touch pro 2? its an upgraded x1 pretty much ok its not for sale yet tho..
Keyboard or not?
I'm not quite sure wether I need the hardware keyboard or not. I did not use it very often with the x1. FingerKeyboard just replaces the hardware keyboard. Together with the smaller form factor I think the diamond 2 will be the right choice for me

If you're not writing many emails, then go, get the diamond II. For SMS, the finger keyboard is doing good enough.
I was also thinking of changing the phones but I am writing mails quite often, so I'll stick with the x1 for a while

hi Alf.
I believe that You've answered Your question. I personally, cannot live without hardware keyboard. As x1 is my main pc of choice, so whether I am posting on forums, writing email or texting it is more convinient for me to have one. and form factor as I stated in other post is an epic win of xperia over, for example, touch pro 2. x1 doesn't look like a bar of soap in Your hand, so tbh I'd rather go for d2 if You don't need hard keys or ... give xperia another go.
I replaced my Diamond with the X1 because I didn't get on with the fingerkeyboard, it was too small for my fingers. I ended up using the stylus all the time. I'd stick with the X1 if I were you.

woooop another manc i only got my HD like 2 weeks ago, upgraded from my touch diamond, i cudnt afford a HD2, so i got the next best thing lol
I too have a diamond, the reason i'm interested is that i'm outdoors ALOT! So a cap screen is rubbish with gloves on.
I could go for a S200 or TG01 but XDA DEV have no support for these. So a nearly new HD is tempting, but the performance of the HD will be no better than my Diamond other then the extra memory...
There are a few of us Mancs about
i have maybe 50% free ram, when using my HD and thats running Sence 2.5, on the diamond tho it soon shot up to like 20-30% free ram only using TF3D 2.1, but on the other hand, even tho the HD has a higher resolution, things looked alot sharper on the diamond, maybe cuz of its smaller screen size, i like being able to use a sd card tho, im not limited to 4gb like on the diamond and the large screen is gr8 for watching movies, The HD dosent offer that much more than the diamond tho so yeah the HD 2 is the better choice if you can afford it lol I could of got a TGO1 for £200 pound, £35 pound less than i paid for my HD, They got em in the fone shop nr picadilly station in town if you want one lol
Near the train station or those near Picadilly Gardens (bus station)? A TG01 would be tempting.
Near the train station, its just at the top off the hill, they got hundreds of fones in the windows, theres another site floating about called wmdevelopers or sumat, its ment to be like xda but for other wm devices, you'll be able to upgrade a tgo1 there i assume
I'd say you wait for some time -- see what comes out and maybe there will be something even better than HD2!!
As for me (a Touch HD owner) I wont go for HD2, because:
1) it has snapdragon - I was waiting for Tegra
2) There are some rumors about Tegra2 (two times more powerful than Tegra)
3) Im saving some money for a Yamaha WR125X , so I cant afford to spend it on a new phone, of which I will get bored after a few weeks
4) I've also heard some rumors about Toshiba next models (those after TG01) -same snapdragon cpu, but some nice features like 3speakers (good for me as Im a melomaniac)
if i didnot own touch HD already i would be sure to buy HD2. now for me there is no significant advantage of upgrading
right...i have a HD and cannot wait to get my hands on the HD2...im using a custom rom by L26 which uses the Leo interface. using half the power of the HD2, the Leo interface is bearable, very usable actually, however i can just tell that some of the nags will not be an issue with the extra 500Mhtz of processing power and double ram the HD2 will have. i think using my HD as a backup phone will surfice!
=D
I use a stylus almost 100% of the time so will not be buying an HD2.
More likely to get the acer, even after a bad experience with an F900, it's smaller, has better battery life, look's to be a bit faster and is far cheaper.
Couldn't care less about TF3D or sense.
My HD is OK for the moment, I would have preferred them to just change out the crappy msm7201 for snapragon, make the screen "a lot" more sensitive like the S200 apparently is, leave the rest alone.
The HD2 is a windows mobile iphone because of it's input and has no appeal to me because of it,I can barely stand not having a d-pad, let alone no stylus.
imo a resistive screen with a stylus is better on a finger-unfriendly windows mobile, isn't it?

Absolutely. There are all sorts of threads on the Leo forums where people are having real problems with the capacitive screen, and having to practice hard for a couple of weeks before they get the hang of just typing with the standard keyboard.
Also some folk are finding that the capacitive screen is registering all sorts of crazy inputs when they're not even touching it. Someone's got a hack hat seems to improve things, but I would say wait till WM7 comes out, and HTC have sorted their screen technology/sensitivity.
If the HD2 was resistive I'd buy it without hesitation.

I'd like to think issues between Microsoft and HTC would be resolved with wm7...........but if I was a betting man I'd bet that it would just cause more issues!!
Unfortunately for me (in the US) I have to wait until a branded version comes out. My Touch HD 8585 gets me 3G for now.

most "issues" are solved by XDA, not them

when we first bought the blackstone we are surprised by the huge screen which enabled some finger operations on the finger unfriendly windows mobile, but, whenever you need a stylus, you got an option at least. Not really need to go over a learning and compromising process to get used to it.

Touché, I would tend to agree with you on this
Yep. The 4.3" Screen is just too big - not pocket friendly at all. That and the capacitive screen...
I would personally love to trade my HD for an HD2. The HD2 has a larger screen, led flash and most importantly: a 1ghz cpu... too bad it is not going to happen
