While we wait - A Preview worth looking at (maybe) - XPERIA X1 General

Hi,
Thought you might like this: http://translate.google.com/transla...245/default.aspx&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=auto&tl=en
There area a couple of really great shots in that preview (yes, its a prototype model) and one thing to note are the pictures at the end of that page - which are apparently taken by the prototype Xperia's camera.
WHOA! - Check out the vide on that page!!! Is that an actual launched Xperia's unboxing video?!?!!??!?
The text in some places say prototype so i can't say for sure - google translator does a great job but sometimes it is hard to make sense of much stuff after translating.
UPDATE Definitely a prototype, after reading through the page, but contains a couple of cool pics.
Best Regards.

Sony Ericsson 15th Sept Webcast Event

just in case you guys are interested
there supposed to be giving a live webcast about the X1 today at around 1 PST
here is the link
http://www.sonyericsson.com/premiere/
i'm goin to try listen in and see what happens.
Seems i've missed it...
Gonna wait for the recording.
God, won't september 30th come already?
I watched this event and have to say I was incredibly disappointed by it. The phone that Magnus was using was so ridiculously slow that I thought it was actually broken. Really. He had a panel that looked fairly customised with the usual array of time/weather/shortcuts/calendar etc and when he opened the keyboard there was about 3 seconds of delay before the screen rotated. However, it didn't stop there. It only redrew most of the screen. It took over 10 seconds for the phone to redraw the icons in landscape mode. How can this possibly be acceptable? 10 seconds?!!? magnus said he had been using this phone as his personal phone for nearly a year and he said he loved it. How many times has he switched from landscape/portrait and wasted 10 seconds of his life waiting for his phone to catch up.
Further to that, the whole thing seemed ridiculously laggy. He covered it up very well by pressing a button and then talking about the feature whilst waiting for it to load. It was painfully obvious though to anyone in the know what was really going on.
I have seen the recent video on theunwired and the screen rotation looks very fast, which is excellent. But perhaps when you have a more heavily loaded panel that fast screen rotation becomes a thing of the past? Also disappointing was the lack of accelerometer.
I was so keen for the X1 but that was 9 months ago. Now I'm going to wait another month or two and get the Touch HD. It lacks the keyboard, but I'll learn to live without.
screen lag
Also saw what you did, but he came on a chat at Modaco afterwards and said that he had a lot of apps open; which could be true...did you see how fast Google Maps came up? Each panel is it's own desktop and programs on it keep running, bound to be a memory hog. He was supposed to be using a retail version also, so should be as fast as the unit at The::Unwired.
To be honest, I never have been happy with my TyTn II for the screen rotation, and looking at video of the Touch Pro it doesn't seem much faster.
Maybe if you set the task manager to close apps when you switch away?
I've just rewatched it and it actually took 16 seconds to rotate the screen at one point!!! Surely that's not acceptable, even if there are plenty of apps running. A device can be made smarter than that with more efficient code.
i didn't get a chance to watch but i dunno i had a lot of really high hopes for this phone but it looks like i might be leaning more towards a touch pro but we'll see how long my wizard holds up before i make decisions about what to do
Webcast
For those who miss it, you can watch it @:-

There is another (GREAT!) review from Arne available:
http://www.theunwired.net/?item=videoview-hands-on-with-sony-ericsson-s-latest-xperia-x1-built
As you can see, the switching of orientation is very fast in all examples in this video (today screen, photo browser and opera). The LEDs are amazing and the whole device makes a very good impression to me. I also like the "moving slideshow" feature.
It's quite responsive and even the panels pop up in time.
If the reception quality is also good then this will be definitely my next device.

arnie did sony a lot more just then they did themselves
wow after watching the SE webcast I find myself turned off by it, you would think they would of added more razzmotazz? Anyone remember the HTC diamond press release? I'm swaying back back towards getting a pro now
Switching between portrait and landscape mode just seems to take milliseconds only and also the panels start much faster than before.

yep just watched it and I must say it does give it more justice, I'm back to waiting for the release so a proper comparision can happen.
Well the suit guy (what a douchebag...) did say that he has been using THAT device since february, so it's probably some alpha version of the device
While the other video it's the almost release beta version.
I still think the device that modaco have done a small video review of is too slow. I mean, surely we're past the stage where we have to wait for things to happen. I don't want a phone that you press a button then wait for something to happen, or open the keyboard and wait for the screen to redraw. The first Diamond roms were a fairly slow, and after updating mine it was much better, so perhaps something like that will occur with the xperia. If not, I'll be glossing over this sexy device!

i know if i had be using my phone for that long with out any backups or a new rom update my phone would have probably been as slow as that also
given that he's not a romhead like us if you don't know what to do with it you'll just let it be unlike us rom start running slow we flash it with something new with the quickness
I'm incredibly disappointed.
Response time for screen switching was a joke ... I've never had an issue with my TyTN or TyTNII ... even though I know some have ... but it was several seconds on the X1 in the video. Also it then seemed to take another 10 seconds to finish populating the screen with icons. The guy then left it open which suggests to me he didn't want to draw too much attention to the time it took.
They were reluctant to answer most technical questions and skirted over the ... it doesn't have tv out one. I was also amazed no one commented on 30FPS performance issues ... I watched the recorded one. I suspect they avoided any difficult incoming questions.
My gut feel is that this will be a very poor showing in it's initial release and if the P series are anything to go by ... updates fixing issues will be few and far between.
This was looking like a dream phone for me ... but now I'm not prepared to buy without trying first hand.
The TouchPro isn't enough of a jump over the TyTN II - same rubbish stills and video and no extra width to the screen ... 800x480 is native for most websites ... so the extra resolution for WVGA makes far more sense than VGA and the G900 showed me there were no issues with apps.
The Touch HD excited me ... and I thought I may get away without the keyboard ... but it also worries me in too many areas ... the first ... although it is 5mp ... the lens is no where as big as the N95 and therefore won't get enough light in to produce decent pictures ... and video is still QVGA which is just crazy for a modern high end device ... it's a little like bring out a car today with a 3 speed auto ... it was fine in '78 with a big old Ford Essex ... but not today. There are also many unanswered questions - Is there TV-Out or not ? How will games be played or those apps that rely today on the dpad - many today screens like Breeze etc ? The touch sensitive buttons ... if they are like the Samsung's we will all be closing calls with out cheeks mid conversation and dialing people when we just pick up the phone to move it.
Why can't these designers think a little. The capability of these phone is amazing now ... but they always miss out those essential things that make a device genuinely complete ... and I don't think it is to hold options for future devices, I just don't think the designers really think things through.
I feel .... very frustrated.
It is always amusing to read the bad and good feelings of all of you here without having one in your own hand. All pre-series and not one of the sold version.
I don't mind this all. I took a great risk to buy the Toshiba G900 with all the bad experiances written about (and the first rom might have been very poor). And what did happen? The G900 is the best manufactured PPC I ever had -best build quality ever seen. With its high resolution it is not slower than my TytnI before. And there you had to wait a good time switching portrait- to landscape-mode.
I am sure the X1 will not only give his owner a very unique design feeling but a good basic to work with. There may be faster PPC, there may be PPC with other features. But most people will buy it in cause of the large screen offering so much more than just 2,8" vga
Buying the X1 will mean not to take the most advantage with games, but texts, internet or similar. Just where the screen has its best sites
if i know htc there will be a Touch HD pro with slide out keyboard after Touch HD

Software and reviews on Xperia X1

Hi,
first, I would like to ask if anybody knows about the software that is actually shipped with the Xperia X1 (not on the test releases, but on the ones that we can get soon)? Are there any other tools than the WM6.1 tools? (Like, a Navigation system? A media player? Games? Business software?)??
Second, are there any reviews from "independend" magazines testing the devices that are shipped (rather than any "latest beta releases")??
Thanks for info!

But keep in mind that the manual is a Draft version and there may be various changes in the final device... but it definitely will cut close to the final release.
I think this is the first review available. Use google translator or something:

Thank you very much! This war very interesting to read. The end:
Very good battery life! Good quality of camera and videofunction. Solid build.
There is some speculation this review is based on a 256mb proto, but i think we can safely say, the retail will not be any different, since teh author says the device is fast and stable and the build quality is also good. so as far as that is concerned everything works fine on a 256mb proto (if it is a proto) and should work even better on retail version.

They didn't mention anything of the specs - i.e. how much RAM and actual speed of switching panels, etc... so we really can't say for sure if it is final or not. Anyways, i posted the same link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433491
That review is in dutch, by MR over at Mobile-Review (a trusted reviewer). He's added some comments on their forums too.
He says it runs fast, no problems there. Keyboard sounds better than his earlier impressions would have you believe, but clearly inferior to the Touch Pro. Build quality is fantastic. Panels poorly implemented, Opera browser poorly implemented (for example the Google panel goes to PIE instead), WinMo barely covered at all by panels - especially bad given how small the text/icons are on this resolution screen - AKA not finger friendly at all. All in all disappointing out-of-the-box experience - what remains to be seen is what people can do with panels, or better yet, porting TF3D to this phone.
As i said there was a bit of speculation over at esato. But it does not matter. If it's retail it works fine, if it's proto, the retail will work fine as well. Most certanly it's the latest ROM.
Regarding this review I would say xperia is an awsome piece of hardware. And if there is enough interest in improving this "out-of-the-box" XPERIAnce, especially on this forum, it will also make an outstanding phone on the whole. I really hope this happens.
Anyone seen any 3rd party panels yet? My google searches haven't turned up a single one!

I saw one from Spb on Youtube, but I`m sorry I can`t fint the link. Maybe someone can help.
I think it might be in the 43 min video with Magnus. I think he shows a panel from Spb.
Take a look at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YQTjnObyOM
After about 19:45 you`ll see the spb panel.
They are at the most obvious place:

Nice, Jabe.
I tried the norwegian version of the site and the panel-link isn`t working. Nice to see a few panels allready available.
Being in France, I can't get my hand on a Sony-Ericsson Xperia X1.
Can some confirm if EveryWAN Remote Support is fully functional on it ?
You can download it here:

DashWire seems like a nice one too!
But the main thing to note here is that with panels such as Dashwire or the Spb Panel, you can get an idea of how much you can do with Panels... i'm expecting a Touch Flo 3D panel in the near future for Xperia...
Very glad to see at least a few panels coming out, X1Panels.com is still just a placeholder

Xperia Reviews - Let the Battle Begin

Hi,
Post any reviews that you find in this thread, with a small conclusion if possible.
NOTE: I have added a poll to this thread, but do not cast your vote yet. Let as many reviews come in, and then vote.
Reviews: (links to reviews will be added here as they start coming in after being confirmed to be reviewing the final build)
Old Links:
Description: The first review of Xperia to hit the Web. Does not go into much detail on performance and speed but covers a lot of stuff in detail and has a couple of really good pictures.
Link: http://www.jouwmobiel.com/review/view/05-10-2008/Sony+Ericsson+X1
Side-Notes: The biggest concern of theirs was ease-of-use. According to them, using your fingers is hard when you start going into inner menus/windows... However in my opinion, you can set the font size to your needs and can easily overcome this. Furthermore, they say that default panels are great but lacking in functionality - which i agree with, but hopefully new panels will come with more functionality and appeal. (For instance, consider the SpbShell panel or others available at SE's site)
Descriptions: M3's review of Xperia. Not too much detail, just the gyst of it all.
Link: http://m3.idg.se/2.1022/1.183975/fo...ria-x1&usg=ALkJrhjPndp9Yybs6iISJnj1OhWlA9MLBw
Side-Notes: Build quality is great but will Panels live up to the expectations? X-Panels are a bit slow at times - same as what Generation Phone House guys said - but hopefully an update will fix it up. The camera is not as good as can be expected from Sony Ericsson (although in my opinion, having seen sample shots, i think it is great!). TF3D from Touch Pro/Diamond is smoother than Panels - in the sense of switching screens/panels. Spb shell is the absolute best screen at the moment.

Videos: (links to Youtube and other videos - showcasing the final xperia. Videos included within reviews are not included in this list)
Description: Xperia Testing...
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjatGzL-QRA
Notes: Very nice and really fast. Near the end she switches from landscape to portrait and it is almost instant if not exactly.
Description: A look at SE panel... Very smooth and fast!
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OnnDosWiuY
Description: EMP Xperia Video 1 - Goes over the interface of Xperia via various apps. No dialogue and the video is stretched, but worth looking at.

Description: EMP Xperia Video 2 - Word, Excel, browsing, etc.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAE5U-klAHw
Description: Swedish? or some other non-Enligh review. Takes you through panels - more of a quick glance - in the first vid. The second link looks at the keyboard. And the third video again looks at panels though this time using the finger rather than a stylus.

Link 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D24GNI-ZKB4
Notes: i'm really liking what i see...
Old Links:
Description: A demonstration by Xperiancers. Though they say that it is not the final device, but is the pretty close to it - prob. with the increased RAM and all.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zal6JJn5F38
Notes: Fast. Silver looks Good! Showcases the Spb Panel as well!
Thanks to hrcro for sharing.
Description: A demonstration by Generation Phone House of Xperia.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LlrJAncJxE
Notes: "Finishes impeccable design and fun, this XPERIA X1 is a true success. The camera is effective and the presence of a 3.5 jack a real asset! The app is rather fast, only the X Panel has been a bit slow at times..."
Side-notes: Panels work pretty great in his video, but like he said the X Panel is a bit slow at times.

Note: There is speculation that this is also a prototype model's review, and we can't confirm as the reviewer does not state it to be the final set and neither are specs, etc. detailed. Hopefully we'll see more reviews come out in the next day or so.
That keyboard review kinda disappointed me, I was hoping it would feel as good (if not better with bigger keys) than the Touch Pro but just have less functionality... Turns out, according to that review, it feels worse AND has less functionality.
I expected the keyboard review to be just like that.
Regarding the reviewer - its MR from Mobile-Review. I've asked him over there to clarify whether the review is a final retail unit.
not totally happy with the review, of course...
I would like pictures in low light conditions too to see how flash works...
The major problem in my opinion is the tiny text size, thats really sad.
Is it smaller than the diamond for exemple? Because diamond is VGA @ 2.8" and Xperia is WVGA in 3", maybe not that different? I'm used with diamond fonts.

We knew from the beginning that it wouldn't beat Touch Pro's keyboard... HTC did an awesome job with that one.

Well, I knew it wouldn't perform like the TP's keyboard (5 row to 4 row obviously) but I figured with the bigger buttons it would feel good to type on.
In the review he basically said the keyboard was fine, just not the best out there. My impression is that the keyboard is adequate, though not ideal.

Definitely... and though also goes on to say that it is hard to find keys at times and so on, but once you get used to it, it won't be any hassle. It won't match up to Touch Pro's keyboard, but i think it would be pretty good.
"Regrettably, the flat keys. You are constantly with your nails looking for the edges of the keys. Walloons fl on the keyboard is more common than you think. You look regularly to the keyboard to determine where your next button is located. The space between the keys X1 is not sufficient in helping you find the keys. The pressure response is also lower than the Touch Pro. As you have not always good or key is pressed. Touch Pro also has more slope in the keys so you better know where you should be. The number of features that you can reach via the keyboard is less than the Pro. The X1 has no directional buttons and no direct keys for SMS, MMS, or mail. If you or CAPS FN enable you see this on the screen and not through two lights just above the keyboard."
That doesn't sound "fine" to me, that sounds ****ty if you always have to look at the keyboard to know where the next key is.

" The keyboard is good, but we have seen better."
Thats after all the criticisms, so sounds like a final summation to me, and hence why it seems adequate.

Did he confirm if this is a prototype version or a final one?
I agree, the default panels are pretty basic - if you ask me - but given Xperia's hardware and the Panel SDK, there is a lot of potential over here. (thus why i am in favor of Panels over TF3D)
He has confirmed it was the final release.
Agreed on the panels front, but for now its clearly inferior to running Manilla on this phone.
Inspite of everything else I think that this is the next phone for me. Although it may be lacking at the beginning it has huge potential and I think we will only see it once third party devs start taking an interest in this phone. And let's be honest here most non-diamond WinMo phones have now got Manila variants which people are choosing to use over the default (Even on Omnia )
The spec (esp. screen) and build have enough potential for me. Size of the fonts is not an issue and whichever phone I got Spb Shell was always gonna be an option
I am also realising that I may also need a hardware keyboard as opposed to a virtual one - not a fan of the Touch Pro/Diamond (although again I think it will be great eventually once the kinks have been ironed out). We'll see - I get a feeling that it will be on Orange eventually (end of month????)

I agree with what you said. Xperia's initial panels may fail to impress, but it'll boast the best hardware in the market at the moment for a WinMo device. It definitely has a lot of potential.
Furthermore Manila 2D may be something i might be looking it, but once Touch HD comes out - same resolution - there is chance of TF3D being copied over onto Xperia as well which will definitely be able to take it on with its specs.
Touch Pro is the best alternative there is to Xperia at the moment, but in my opinion Xperia is better - more RAM, customizability (panels), higher resolution, better video recording capabilities...

I don't understand what's all this stuff about small fonts.
First of all, WM has the ability to change font size and developers can decide the size of their displays I don't see where is the problem
Second, I had said this before, for the same font size Xperia beats every other phone hands down in sharpness and detail.
Xperia has the highest density of pixels per sq inch. producing extreme detail and sharpness
Xperia 100000 pixels per sq inch
Diamond 86000
Touch HD 60000
iPhone 27000
Omnia 21000

Edit: I forgot to mention that I've fiddled with the S Voice in multiple languages (I'm not a native speaker of either of them) and it surprised me how well I managed to get along with the app. It's responsive, useful and can easily understand you (I'm kind of shouting at it because I wanted to get it right, but it works very nicely). Can't wait for the Romanian version!
Cool!

Tomorrow I'll be giving back the SIII, so post questions, if you have any, while I'm still able to verify things for you!
How were you able to acquire such a beast before release?
I'm with the Samsung Mob!lers Romania and we almost always get the devices prereleased. Unfortunately they are beta products and can have faulty software, but luckily I had no problem whatsoever with the SIII. Stay tuned for a full video hands on and many other Samsung devices
Funniest part is when it open maps in Korean language

Rate your UX with the new nature inspired TouchWiz. How is it different than S2 TW? Smoother? Any small, but experience enhancing changes?
Reviews have shown that the stock S3 browser is much better and less laggy than the S2. Can you confirm this with real life usage?
Unfortunately I have no S2 at hand to try out, but what I can say based on my experience with TouchWiz is that it's very sharp and quick and in the time I used it I had no intention of using a custom launcher. The browser is the same I have on my Tab 2, and prefer it over Chrome, but I can't say how much faster it is than the predecessors.
There are many users talking about the possible screen issues on the SGIII. Were you able to notice some kind of tinting?
Thank you for your time and great videos by the way.
I saw some topics talking about the display quality, with a slightly pink hue, but the model I have is just perfect. A lot of people complain about the oversaturation, but I think the colors are very very vivid. You get four different display color settings to match your taste, with dynamic being the flashiest and then standard, natural and movie.
I've tested everything out and I never got a force close or any kind of error, although it got stuck in S Voice once, but bear in mind that I don't have an actual production model.

i read about other reviewers saying this too. very cool. thanks.
And here's the full review, a short presentation of the features. I particularly love the screen, crisp clear as you can see in the close up at the end. Enjoy

Thank you, Flo.
EDIT: Now I see that the other guy has replied to my question about the reader and the answer is that it is available for most sites!
Is there a "reader" type function in the web browser? In one other video demonstrating text reflow, the reviewer pressed an icon in or near the address field to go into a "reader" mode! So clearly it does exist, but the reviewer was browsing mobile wikipedia when he did it, I was wondering if it is available when for example reading an article on Gsmarena in desktop mode?
I didn't see any reader button so I can't say if there was one, when I browsed I simply used the text wrap on the standard double tap zoom, never at different sizes.
If it's the same browser with the one I have on my Tab 2 (ICS 4.0.3) then there is no such feature, but they nay be different.
have u used or looked at a htc one X before? if so could you make a brief comparison of its screen with the sgs3 screen?
I have only seen them separately and I only know that both displays are amazing. A romanian reviewer whom I trudt has made a detailed comparispn between them and he favours the screen of the One X. In terms of resolution or color tones they're both overkill, but he says that the visibility in heavy sunlight is better on the One X.
I can only say that there's nothing you can possibly use the screen for that requires a higher resolution. Check the close up in the end of my gestures video to see how crisp clear it is!
Fantastic mate. Thanks for the videos.
If you still have the device with you can you try to shoot and upload a video showing the multitasking capability. Open as many apps as you can including games and browser and switch back from one another to see how well is it functioning ?

I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?fife3i
I gave the phone back, but I've tested the problem reported on the One X, that the multitasking was not working properly (reloading web pages when switched back to the browser etc) and I can completely vouch for the multitasking on the S III. It switches the apps flawlessly and keeps them in the RAM not requiring a reload.

haha love the comparison with the 5110. I had that phone about 14 years ago and it wasn't considered to be a big phone back then.
Facepalm the phone to silence it is EPIC !

First playing with the HTC One

Today I was in the fortunate position to test the HTC One. My first impression: Wow! It feels f***ingly good in the hand, looks tremendously nice and knows to impress me a lot.
First you see is the new Blink Feed. It is strongly reminds of Windows Phone tiles, but is graphically more dynamic and nicer. Various sources and apps are integrated. Facebook, Twitter, on the social side, dpa, Stern, Engadget and others on the news page. BlinkFeed looks so great, that the plain one colored calendar entries seem almost out of place. Overall, Blink Feed will certainly replace my news apps like Flipboard and Press, if can add my own sources. Hopefully there will be some modifications which will allow this.
With Zoe, I could not really play, because it was a demo unit and the possibilities of trying out camera quality, HDR and Co. in a bright lighted O2 Store is not really meaningful. I will probably have to wait until next week to test it properly.
The impression of the Appdrawer was positive as well. It is very tidy, can be customized with folders and sorting to the own needs, and even the grid size can (3x4 or 4x5) be changed. The only downside -you scoll vertically and not horizontally. I feel it as disturbing with some gingerbreadish feeling. Let's see how I see this in four weeks.
With Sense TV I could also play limited, because the necessary equipment was missing in the O2 store obviosly. However, this feature also made a good impression. Select your country and enter the zip code, Sense TV provide all kinds of vendors, including my vendor T-Home Entertain. Immediately I received a list with the current available TV channels. Here you have the opportunity to remind yourself of programs or access full series guides, etc. I'm impressed.
Last of all, I have called the demo video and could enjoy HTC BoomSound at full volume. My next Wow. No rattling, but logically no bass as well. But crystal clear and extremely loud. Looks as the times have passed to bring some small analog boxes with me when I go to the lake to listening to some music.
A look at the settings shown Android 4.1.2 with Sense 5. HTC's software version was 1.24, a 1.26 was already in the queue. I hope that HTC:
1. Android 4.2 will come soon
2. HTC will change its update policy and doesn't support this great product for just one year.
Then I see a good chance that once again, people are opting for a HTC high-quality device. I am very impressed and looking forward to next week when I can finally keep the jewelry in my hands.
I sent an email to HTC asking if they'll ship it with 4.2. Their reply was 'most probably'
