A little review to look at - Shift General

http://www.doctorsgadgets.com/htc-shift-review.html
its 35 minutes long and ................ awesome!

Yeah, I've already seen this! Only problem is that it's kind of outdated. I'm pretty sure this was for the 30GB 1.x GHz htc shift that really wowed a lot of people. I'm pretty sure the new ones come in either 40 and 60GB or 40 and 80GB models

The trouble with the "Magician"

It looks nice - but where's the advantage?
It's smaller and it has a higher resolution camera - but it has less RAM, the CPU is no quicker than the Himalaya's and the Angel's and it's still fumbling around at 320x240!
HTC want to get off their arses and do some more R&D - they seem to have forgotten that the only way to make something desireable to the consumer is to make it better than the competitors and keep the costs low.
They seem to have done very well at it so far - but I fear they'll be overtaken by the likes of HP if they keep producing devices with same or similar specs to one another. The XDAIIs really isn't a great leap forward from the XDA2 - the only extras it has are a keyboard and WiFi, and the battery lasts a little longer. And I have to say I'm very glad that it's not been called the XDA3 - as some members of this forum suggested, it is only really an XDA2.5!
Of course, this could be a very-much-likely-to-fail attempt to secure business in other areas. Yes, the Magician is a PocketPC and a phone, but it's still bigger and more expensive than the i-pod - and has only 3.2% of the storage capacity! All the same, it's advertised as a music playing device. You can pick up a little USB MP3 player for a fraction of the price with four times the storage capacity, or an iPod for half the price with a 20Gb hard disk. In other markets, they really aught to be looking at a complete landscape solution rather than a half-baked portrait system if they hope to pick up business from those who are put off by the price & lack of connectivity of, say, the OQO 1 (www.oqo.com)
Speaking of storage - I picked up a pair of 1Gb SDIO cards on eBay for around £50 (~72€) each!
HTC actually makes the HP units and also does the Treo 600 series units. Apart from RIM, they have no competion in these devices (as most other competing units are also prduced by them).

No bells ringing on those two points there? Basically you just stated that for a piddly 50 bucks, this thing becomes 1GB MP3 player - and that's in additon to being a full-fledged PDA and mobile phone. And still no bigger than vanilla mobile phones.
IPOD is a music player, but with this kind of range of capability of the "Magician", the IPOD reall starts to look like and old carthorse. Even where the IPD is going (displayig photos) the "Magician" can do that ith a better and bigger screen.
One could really argue that you are unduly downplaying the importance of this kind of device and this is where the market goes from here on in. I'd suspect that whatever follows the "Himalaya" will stick with this form factor and just load load on power and cababilities.
That was me posting above.. Login didn't work and it turned up as "guest".
Its JUST RIGHT
Guys
I dont know what the JAM is advertised as, but I went ahead and bought one last week and I just love it.
THe form factor is just right, the screen isnt as small as we would like to think it is - in fact I havent noticed any discomfort from the smaller screen.
Okay its not different in specs from the other devices, but this one just fits into your life unobtrusively - with the Qteks (both 1010 and 2020) as well as my first Pocket PC phone (Sagem WA3050) it was difficult to keep track of all the things you had to carry. Suddenly, life has become so much easier with the phone fitting very nicely into a belt pouch no larger than that for other mobile phones.
I am glad I made the change to the JAM, and the only cribs I have are that the build quality isnt as good as the earlier pieces - it feels really plasticky sometimes - and I wish they'd stuck to the 1010's design for the SIM card because I switch cards quite often and it is quite a chore with this new unit as the battery cover doesnt come off as easily as it did with the 2020.
And yeah, I would have preferred built-in WiFi to a 'megapixel' camera. Dump the camera, give us WiFi...
I think we're going to be seeing quite a few devices in this form factor now - EVERYONE who's seen the JAM wants one.
Cheers
Sands

iPod 20 GB for 299,00 Euro the only thing it does is play music.
Why would I need 20 GB mp3 on my body?
BTW I paid 479,00 euro (without contract) for my Magician....
I think the iPod is a fashion statement just like the first iMacs.
Only those iMacs where ****ty computers and the iPod is a nice mp3 player.
(and as all Mac-thingies way to expensive)
BUT to compare the iPod to the Magician is plain silly.
I can do anything with my Magician. (even swop the accu!)
Or scan barcodes. (www.flicscanner.com)
Offcourse we all want a device the size of a matchbox with all the gadgets packed in.
I would like a 21 inch 1600 x 1200 display beamed from that matchbox on the wall
and a keyboard beamed from that same matchbox on my desk.
A 300 Terra byte disk and a zillion gigahertz proc inside!
In the mean time why don't you buy a Magician and see for yourself what it can do right now.
Why am I getting the feeling that the magician is way too expensive in Sweden? My eyes almost popped out when i read that it is 479 € in your country.
I paid 595€ which was in a cheapstore, the other one i looked in took 659€!
:/
It really is a great device though, the size made me buy it, I can have it in my jeans pocket just like any "ordinary" cellphone. The only bad thing is that I got a dead pixel and I really hope they will replace the unit because it's purple and in the middle of the screen :/
Hi!
Maybe you should buy the MDA compact (same as iMate Jam) in Germany for around 400 EUR. Even with shipping to "somewhere" in Europe it'd be cheaper. Of course you need to flash an english ROM to it - or learn german...
I really didn't know that we're sooo cheap here.
Greetings
plant
Is it really 400 euros? You must be kidding me!
i bought one for 459€...
EDIT: http://fonez.de/pd1101545991.htm?categoryId=27 <- 439,64€
attention, the site is in german!
Hi!
No - I'm not kidding.
The cheapest price I was able to get was 397 EUR excl. shipping (but including german VAT which is 16%).
Just check out http://www.geizhals.at/de and search for MDAcompact - the cheapest price at the moment is 426 EUR (incl. VAT, excl. shipping).
Proof: http://www.geizhals.at/deutschland/a130814.html - as you can see the first 2 shops are rated quite good.
Beware: Site is in german.

Unboxing Xperia X1

http://miniurl.org/2qL
What do you think folks? isnt this the ultimate phone we've been waiting for all these years?
Broken link.
Edit: Thanks for fixing.
One thing I don't like is how when you're flipping through the panels you HAVE to select one. You can't flip through them in that format, then lift your finger and not pick it. Also, very laggy on the screen rotation in panel mode. Graphics accelerator, 384MB ram? Maybe it'll need all of it just to rotate the screen. Really lame, one of the "benefits" to this was going to be that it eats less memory than TF3D... Seems to eat more.
Overall, once they work out some issues, it'll be a good phone. The phone of the future? Maybe... Not my future, but it'll compete with some of the best.
That site has been viewed by a lot of people in the last few days - with regards to performance issues I think it is stated that he had a pre-release version. I believe newer roms have made it snappier (from what I have read)
yup i agreed, its still laggy on screen rotation in panels mode. but switching from one ponales to the other is so fast!
and of course it eats alot of memory than TFL3D, it has 8 active desktop and all running on the background! What makes you think they boost the RAM to 384MB?
hell, it would even be funny to see TFL3D/ manila 2D running as one of Xperia panels and still keep the speed

Umm, not all of the panels are running applications... It's not the same as having 9 programs open simultaneously, like you guys make it out to be.

Can't wait for a real unboxing.
For the first time ever, I can't wait as well. not because of the phone, i know everything unboxing could tell me. i just want to know what the heck there will be in the box besides the phone! will there be a case or a memory card or a headset...? Noone's never said anything about that, but I'd like to know how much additional cost i can expect provided i go with x1.

They upped the RAM to 384, that sounds like reconstruction to me.

Oh yeah? Hm. That video was from September 25th, and on September 26th it was posted on Xperiancers saying there was 384MB RAM... Are you sure that version didn't have it? You're not? Okay then. Notice they didn't say "The device will have", they said "The device has"...
"• Questions re: the speed etc… The device has a graphics accelerator, a 528 Mhz processor and 384 megs of ram (so it should be as fast as anything else that is out there.)"
So I'm glad to know you're 100% sure the version on video 1 day earlier didn't have 384 megs of ram.
And wow, I'm gonna call major BS on what they said here on Xperiancers:
"• How big is the battery and how long does it last? The battery is a 1500mAh unit (about 10% bigger than, for example, the touch pro). How long it lasts depends very much on how much you use the phone. Even in the worst case scenario, with all the features turned on (GPS, internet, applications etc…) and heavy usage, it will last all day and need to be charged over night."
Really? GPS and WiFi, WORST case scenario, using everything, you can't kill the battery in less than a day? BULL****.
Haha chill out there buddy. But you missed one assumption. You assumed because that video is posted on the 25th that they have the newest phone version. As you can see here right in the review they say it's difficult to say how far they are from the final version. Now why would they say that if they got it a day before the release?
"This is a prototype, we were advised that we do not run into any big test that before we start selling a lot more changes. There are several things that at this X1 does not work at all (like GPS), or do not work optimally. It is difficult to say how far we are from the final version, it is clear that the work on the software, therefore, prefer to avoid the assessment of speed or function at all. "
And another quote to back me up.
"With the speed of the animation of the prototype would be worse, but what can be seen in the accompanying video is one of the things that are in the final Xperiích significantly improved (see video at the:: unwired). "
The unwired video was posted on the 15th. Now if it was posted on the 15th why would there 1 day old phone be significantly improved 14 days earlier?

How would they test it and know it works? Do you mean to tell me you expect them to completely revamp the hardware of the device and release it as-is, with no beta testing? If that's the case, I'm REALLY worried about their quality control now.

upgrade from Topaz? or stick with it?

Well my topaz screen is being replaced for the second time (Newton Rings) so will come back pristine. Its 9months old now, so next time will cost me. Do I sell on ebay now or keep? what would you do?
I mainly surf, read feeds , tomtom calendar and email.
I'm looking at iPhone, Leo or HD. Screen size appeals for browsing, or perhaps keep, but feel sure the rings will reappear. Is Leo too big? too problematic?
Looking for thoughts if you were in the same position? any regrets? Anything else I should consider??
Just upgraded from the Topaz, I'd say go for it m8!
It's a bigger device but you'll get used to it very fast and it's just an awesome experience from my Topaz. Sold my Topaz for 250 euros and bought my HD2 for 585 so not much of a loss. Bought my Topaz for 380 euros in Sep 09.
Hope this helps.
Thanx - appreciate it! Is the battery much different (I've read loads of conflicting views and sounds a little worse than the topaz if I had to average the comments -is that you take on it?)
Anyone else?
Can't really tell, cause I have my HD2 since yesterday. Looks like the battery life is worse than my Topaz but I can get a full day with it.
Cottonpickers,
There's a few threads on here asking very similar question to yours. One that I commented in the other day has a few links I provided of polls that help to give you a sense of balance and perspective and, hopefully, answer your question.
Just have a quick scan through the posts here to find it.
WB
Any more sharing of experience, impressions from Leo (HD2) users?
I heard that the Leo sucks software-wise.
Does the 1Ghz Snapdragon really lives up to its hype?
I made the upgrade from Topaz... I love it... It is WAYYYYY faster, screen is amazing... I use Swype and happily MSN/sms/email without a hitch,.. in fact, I'm much faster now than I was on the Topaz.
Software is plentiful if you know what you want and know where to look. I'm sure the Isheep has loads more of pretty and perhaps useless apps... I dont game so much on my phone either... this is a top of the range business phone... If you would like to game, then the Iphone is for you. If you want to do the stuff you mentioned, you wont regret the upgrade. I look at the Topaz now that my wife is now using and wonder how the heck I managed to do anything with that size screen... and although the Topaz is bigger, it feels much more comfortable to use now. Its so thin it almost feels a little like a slate/tablet device
i've had the HD2 for almost a month now and can get through a day's usage before the battery gives out. That's with weather updating every 3 hours, twitter every 2 hours and direct push and hotmail push on. Add to that about an hours worth of phone calls and about 20 texts, the battery seems to be ok, but it does depend heavily on how you use the phone.
The 1GHz Snapdragon does make a huge difference and you will notice it, i've come from a Touch Pro and Xperia X1 and the speed difference is immediately noticeable.
As for software, most of the programs I used on the touch pro and x1, work without any issues, so whatever you had on the Topaz should work on the HD2 as well
As mentioned above, the HD2 does feel a little like a slate/tablet device.
Great advice - thanks all. I found that poll on whether people were happy with Leo in the end (thanks for directing me to find that) , and I was surprised how positive it was.
Also surprised at all the comments that the Leo is not too big in the pocket due to its thinness which was a big concern
On this basis, I think I'm goinig to bite the bullet, and ebay the topaz. (unless there's any I'm missing) and go with the Leo. I'm less in to games and more into a good 'mini slate' and sounds like that is the Leo

Fennec, whats that? O yeh, that parasite of a sloth browser
are we there yet with technology? I always thought pico projectors were useless gimmicks, but if they can do that keyboard thing that would be neat
that virtual lazer keyboard you see already exist, it only cost $170+
http://www.thinkgeek.com/interests/techies/8193/
the wireless aero mouse also exist by logitech only cost $350+
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/mice/devices/3443
the phone with projector i've seen it already on DX extreme website for around $280+
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.17069
Fenec for android is still in Alpha but it exist
so if you can marry all of the above together, you will get what you saw on the video
the only cool thing on the video is how compact they were able to put all that stuff together in 1 phone.... unlikely at this point in time with our current technology, or nano tech is not mature enough yet to produce such small devices with all the required components inside, at least not for mass production.
just the lazer keyboard itself is the size of that phone, same goes with the aero mouse
ive one of such ultra tiny projects and it works decently well. uses a LOT of battery.
fennec is also pretty much awesome interface wise etc. it's just way too slow for real use right now. (like the sgs without lagfix )
i wonder how much they will advertize the price for the phone if they actually do make it to the market
That is like the coolest phone / mini computer I have ever seen!!! I want it NOW!!! lol!!!

Think you got the wrong thread
Boy, aint he hideous!
Watching this video made me remember of when Homer produced an American-styled car in his brother's industry...

sure would be nice if these actually existed

I sure would like an archos 70, in fact i've been trying to buy one for 2 months now. At this point i'm pretty sure they're just a myth and archos only made 12 demo models that they sold to the same person. Every time they supposedly get more they're gone in 10 seconds and then ebay and amazon get covered in $600 archos ITs.
Anyone else completely disgusted with archos at this point? I guess I'll just go give my money to a company that actually wants it.
I bought mine from ErwinComp about two and a half weeks ago. It just took some looking around for a vendor with them in stock at a reasonable price.
I don't think Archos was expecting the incredible demand these things pulled... I managed to get lucky and my dad got one from Just4Electronics for 275, arrived on Christmas Eve.
Still waiting to get my hands on a 101 without paying an inflated marked up price.
Making due with the 43 that I was able to order direct from Archos back pre-launch, but the 101 is the one I've really wanted. But after the talk at CES of a lower priced 10" tablet, I'm wondering if I'm not better off waiting a bit longer.
I waited for 71 days before receiving my Archos 70 Internet Tablet 250GB!
It was well worth the waiting! I was a little discouraged and impatient at first, but have learned how to tweak this tablet. Running smoothly now.
I'm enjoying this beauty more everyday ....
Highly recommend the Archos 70 Internet Tablet 250GB.
I'm glad that I got the 250GB model, because I really need all that extra memory. Have over 600 apps installed already. Still checking them all out, a few each day.
I was originally going to get the Archos 70 IT 8GB, and even bought three 8GB micro-SDHC cards. Then changed my mind and decided to go with the 250GB, so I won't need to be switching memory cards all the time.
My Archos connects to my MacPro without any issues, so transferring files is easy and flawless.
Have tons of music, both MP3 and MP4 music video, articles, books, some back up files of my family history, family pictures.

I was really considering the 70 250GB vs the 101 16GB, but was concerned about the fragility of a hard drive in a device like this. That and I do like the idea of more screen real estate.

I too had the same concern, regarding carrying around a moving hard drive. I got my iBook G4 in June of 2004, and carried it around with me almost everyday, and usually the iBook was running while I carried it in my backpack, the van, or on my bicycle, walking around ....
Didn't start to have any problems with the hard drive until around 2008. I just got a new hard drive last year, as I was using an external HD when the internal HD started crashing. Was still able to get all the data from the HD backed up.
So far, haven't had any problems carrying my Archos 70 around. Haven't had it very long yet, but I've carried it around walking a lot, on the city bus, my bicycle riding around town, and on the church bus which drives over some very rough and bumpy roads! I was impressed yesterday when riding the church bus, and we hit some really rough speed bumps! I though for certain the HD would skip. Didn't have any issues.
I got the three-year extended warranty from J&R, only $49, which was less than other places. So, I figure if anything will go wrong, hopefully it will happen before three years.
Regarding the 7-inch screen, it is slightly smaller than I would like, but still much better than a 3-inch or 4-inch screen. The Archos 70 is still large enough that reading articles or books is no problem. Especially, since I'm holding it close to my eyes. The screen brightness can be adjusted as needed. When I'm at home, I have the screen brightness turned down all the way, and I can still read anything very easily!
I have a small shoulder bag/pouch, which just happens to have a pocket that fits the Archos 70 perfectly. I still need to get a screen protector and case though. If I carried around a 10-inch tablet, wouldn't be quite as convenient.
I'm really enjoying this Archos beauty! Might even consider getting the Archos 43, or some other smaller Internet tablet someday .....
I don't think there are many e-book readers that will do as much as the Archos 70 Internet Tablet 250GB will ....
I know 4 people (in addition to me) that have bought Archos gen8 tablets, so it can't be that hard. They are in stock again at: http://store.archos.com/
Archos
Hey first post on here. Been reading for a while. I bought every single cheap android tablet i could find locally to tide me over while trying to get my archos 101. i got an email from newegg that they had them in stock. went there and were already out! later that night i got another email they were back in stock, so I ordered 2! So I left one in the box and been playing with the other one. I'd really like to trade the 101 (8gb) for a 70 because I'd like to try the smaller size, but I'm too concerned with getting screwed to actually do it. It'd be nice to find someone local!
They're pretty rare in UK shops aswel.
