sure would be nice if these actually existed - Gen8 General

I sure would like an archos 70, in fact i've been trying to buy one for 2 months now. At this point i'm pretty sure they're just a myth and archos only made 12 demo models that they sold to the same person. Every time they supposedly get more they're gone in 10 seconds and then ebay and amazon get covered in $600 archos ITs.
Anyone else completely disgusted with archos at this point? I guess I'll just go give my money to a company that actually wants it.

I bought mine from ErwinComp about two and a half weeks ago. It just took some looking around for a vendor with them in stock at a reasonable price.

I don't think Archos was expecting the incredible demand these things pulled... I managed to get lucky and my dad got one from Just4Electronics for 275, arrived on Christmas Eve.

Still waiting to get my hands on a 101 without paying an inflated marked up price.
Making due with the 43 that I was able to order direct from Archos back pre-launch, but the 101 is the one I've really wanted. But after the talk at CES of a lower priced 10" tablet, I'm wondering if I'm not better off waiting a bit longer.

I waited for 71 days before receiving my Archos 70 Internet Tablet 250GB!
It was well worth the waiting! I was a little discouraged and impatient at first, but have learned how to tweak this tablet. Running smoothly now.
I'm enjoying this beauty more everyday ....
Highly recommend the Archos 70 Internet Tablet 250GB.
I'm glad that I got the 250GB model, because I really need all that extra memory. Have over 600 apps installed already. Still checking them all out, a few each day.
I was originally going to get the Archos 70 IT 8GB, and even bought three 8GB micro-SDHC cards. Then changed my mind and decided to go with the 250GB, so I won't need to be switching memory cards all the time.
My Archos connects to my MacPro without any issues, so transferring files is easy and flawless.
Have tons of music, both MP3 and MP4 music video, articles, books, some back up files of my family history, family pictures.

I was really considering the 70 250GB vs the 101 16GB, but was concerned about the fragility of a hard drive in a device like this. That and I do like the idea of more screen real estate.

I too had the same concern, regarding carrying around a moving hard drive. I got my iBook G4 in June of 2004, and carried it around with me almost everyday, and usually the iBook was running while I carried it in my backpack, the van, or on my bicycle, walking around ....
Didn't start to have any problems with the hard drive until around 2008. I just got a new hard drive last year, as I was using an external HD when the internal HD started crashing. Was still able to get all the data from the HD backed up.
So far, haven't had any problems carrying my Archos 70 around. Haven't had it very long yet, but I've carried it around walking a lot, on the city bus, my bicycle riding around town, and on the church bus which drives over some very rough and bumpy roads! I was impressed yesterday when riding the church bus, and we hit some really rough speed bumps! I though for certain the HD would skip. Didn't have any issues.
I got the three-year extended warranty from J&R, only $49, which was less than other places. So, I figure if anything will go wrong, hopefully it will happen before three years.
Regarding the 7-inch screen, it is slightly smaller than I would like, but still much better than a 3-inch or 4-inch screen. The Archos 70 is still large enough that reading articles or books is no problem. Especially, since I'm holding it close to my eyes. The screen brightness can be adjusted as needed. When I'm at home, I have the screen brightness turned down all the way, and I can still read anything very easily!
I have a small shoulder bag/pouch, which just happens to have a pocket that fits the Archos 70 perfectly. I still need to get a screen protector and case though. If I carried around a 10-inch tablet, wouldn't be quite as convenient.
I'm really enjoying this Archos beauty! Might even consider getting the Archos 43, or some other smaller Internet tablet someday .....
I don't think there are many e-book readers that will do as much as the Archos 70 Internet Tablet 250GB will ....

I know 4 people (in addition to me) that have bought Archos gen8 tablets, so it can't be that hard. They are in stock again at: http://store.archos.com/

Archos
Hey first post on here. Been reading for a while. I bought every single cheap android tablet i could find locally to tide me over while trying to get my archos 101. i got an email from newegg that they had them in stock. went there and were already out! later that night i got another email they were back in stock, so I ordered 2! So I left one in the box and been playing with the other one. I'd really like to trade the 101 (8gb) for a 70 because I'd like to try the smaller size, but I'm too concerned with getting screwed to actually do it. It'd be nice to find someone local!

They're pretty rare in UK shops aswel.

What other tablets do you own besides and including Archos?
I have the 70 8gb and just think it is the greatest. Everything is setup and working perfect. Would really like to get a 10" one. Would like to get the 101 or the Viewsonic G. I know the G is a tad heaver. But the folks here are doing just amazing things with it. Would love to get one just for the fun of expermenting with it.
Not sure if it's a "tablet" per se but I've been an iPod Touch user since '08. I just got an Archos 43
I had the ipod touch for like two years before the screen cracked. Loved it. Talk about a bonding. I had in my shirt pocket and it did everything perfect. How you likeing the 43. Looks like a pretty amazing device.
So far I'm not pleased with the touch interface. I find text entry very, very difficult which makes using the device frustrating.
Had a gPad I ordered from China...sold it after 2 days.
Had a Viewsonic 10" tablet (the one they sold at Sears for $399) returned it 4 days later because it was slow as dirt, crashed constantly, etc...
Had a Nook Color and found the wireless and browsing a poor experience...returned it when the Archos 101 arrived in the mail...
Was thrilled happy with the Archos until this new battery issue that apparently only affects me now...

[Q] NY Purchasers -- Are you satisfied??

For those who actually were able to make it to the NY Event, how do you feel about your purchase? It is meeting or exceeding expectations? Is it heavier or fatter than you thought it would be? I'm hoping to see some reviews from actual users, not review-sites. I know there are a lot of the IO edition users here, but I feel when you plunk down $500-600 for a device, your feelings are amplified and may provide for a "different" review.
Edit: and for those who wanted the grey, how do you feel about the white that you had to purchase? I originally wanted white, but feel that the grey would be more durable (that's a total guess, though).
My specific question regards creak and light bleed. I love the Asus transformer Inks some slight light bleeding along the bottom and right side. It is minor but I am obsessive.
Don't mind the bigger size of it as I do prefer its expandability.
Only review out since new release of the Samsung tab is on mobiletechreview YouTube. I could swear I see some light bleeding along the bottom and right sides. If this is at all an issue on these tabs I am happy to stay withmy Asus.
But my return window ends tomorrow so need help deciding now.

Leftovers? Damn, I wish I lived near NY! I have my pre-order in on Amazon for a 32 GB Grey version, but cannot expect it until June 18 at the earliest (release date +1 according to their shipping options).

I'm happy with my purchase. i am also glad that i went in the afternoon (2:30p) instead of joining some line it literally took 2minutes tops. The build quality is actually quite sturdy considering that it is extreamly light, everything just fits snug and tight no creaks. i didnt notice any light leakage, but i was slow to notice it on my evo until i saw what to look for, so it's not noticible if present at all. i think for me personally no matter which tab i keep i'm going to be giving up something from the next, i like the sd card and the overclocking of my xoom but i gave it up for the light weightness and the sleakness of 10.1.

Corrected. It just feels like over a month away
you guys that bought one in NY, help us out with a 3.1 system dump
Hey,
I purchased mine yesterday, I got their at about 11:15am before the sale started. I really wanted to purchase the 32gb but ended up just buying the 16gb. This is my first 'tablet' that I've ever purchased.
I have a Droid 2 Global phone and I've done all the rooting etc/loading different mods etc and I'm looking forward to doing it with this. I bought this because I want to customize it the same way I did for my phone.
I'm kind of disappointed that i''ll have to buy the usb desktop hub thing in order to get full the usb functionality. Other than that though I really like it.
I bought the Wi-fi version because i can easily tether it to my phone (and have- it works really well). I commute from NJ to NY every day so I wanted something for the train that was bigger than my phone. I think its worth the purchase.
PS i voted - YES
I bought mine yesterday after work around 6:00 and I can honestly say that as a former Transformer owner, the Tab is a much better tablet for the extra $100. No light bleed, no creaks, no FCs...none at all. Plus its a lot more comfortable to hold especially over a longer period of time. Be advised that if you are a Mac owner there is currently no way to transfer through USB. I had to use doubletwist and sync wirelessly.
Did you try the Kies for Mac beta?
I was third in line. I'd been waiting since 5 in the morning. I'd planned to get the 32GB in grey, but since they only had the 16 white, I was a little let down...until I started to use it. I'm totally and completely happy with the device, and can't see myself being separated from it. I've already ordered the USB adapter from Samsung so I can connect my travel HDD and thumb drives for movies. I actually am so happy with it that I'm going to keep the White 16GB.
I wish i could see why the 2 people who are unhappy wothhthe device have voted as such. Assuming, that is, that they're not just trolling.
I'm only selling mine because I want the 32gb version. its a really sweet device.
I was 13th in line at BB and also was disappointed that the 16 GB white was the only model available. I let a couple of the Samsung reps know my dissatisfaction with the way the whole thing was handled, but that's a gripe for another thread. I'm happy with the unit and have zero regrets and, if I didn't like the gray-backed one better, I'd totally keep this one. Those that haven't gotten to handle one yet will be very happy with the unit.
I stopped in at 9pm on the 8th and there were plenty left. It's already listed on ebay in hopes I can make a few bucks. If not I will return it to Best Buy. Build quality is fantastic but 3 major issues:
1. How the F do you transfer files? I'm not interested in hunting down drivers or trying to find back door soutions. The whole purpose of getting an Android device over an ipad is NO ITUNES meaning DRAG AND DROP. I have tried connecting on Mac OS and Windows with no luck in getting any of my computers to recognize the device.
2. I installed Dropbox, waited 2 hours for 1 movie file to transfer over (AVI/divx format) and when it had finally transferred, the default player would not support playback. I didn't even bother trying to DL another media player. The F'in default player should play divx files since that is what is advertised.
3. The damn USB cable requires the charging block that came with it to charge. I can't trickle charge on my laptop's port or use any of my USB travel chargers. That means 1 more charger PLUS one more stupid proprietary connecting port that I have to travel with. Maybe not a big deal to most but I fly about 150 times per year so 2 more things to have to remember to pack is a huge deal.
WARNING - this is a half baked OS. Looks pretty and the device flies but is nowhere near ready for mass consumption. I work 60-80 hours per week with a screaming 2 year old at home. I don't have time to search the web for stupid tricks to make this thing do basic things. For $500 I want something that works well and feels solid. And WITHOUT itunes.
Got mine last night a BB. They seemed to have at least a dozen left in the display area stack. But when I inquired 10 minutes ago they said they were sold out, though the may get more I stock by tomorrow.
I too wwas disappointed that the white model was the only one available, but in actual use it looks and feels pretty good. I may just stick with it.
Build is surperb, but honeycomb needs more tuning. Dedicated apps are supreme, just not enough of them. Looking forward to software improvements, including custom ROM, but I doubt I'll see better hardware before Christmas or ipad3 next year.
(Typing from my GT with thumb keyboard. Which is awesome!)
Mine died today. i was using it and i shut the screen off and now it wont turn back on... I will go back to Best Buy tomorrow to exchange it for a new one.
All and all I like it.
A
1. Downloading samsung kies driver from samsung's website should do the trick,no?
2. Don't bother to convert when transferring video files, and play it using a file a file manager, and it should be fine. (I've watched two HD David films with it already)
3. Not sure about the charging situation, shall check again.
hope this helps!

Thinking of selling iPad 1 for fire!

So, I'm an android fan and have been thinking about selling my iPad 1 and taking the cash and picking up the Fire. I've played with my co-workers and realize they are supposed to be compared. Was just wondering what you guys think?
You will probably be able to sell your ipad1 for at least 300 dollars. I guess it really depends what you want to do with the tablet. There are Android tablets out there with better specs than the Fire that you could get for 300 dollars, maybe cheaper with holiday sales. However, if you are mainly interested in surfing the web and consuming Amazon content, the Fire is the way to go. It probably meets my needs/wants about 80% of the time.
The main issues I have are that browser is not faster than my other tabs, not much storage space for offline content, and keypresses don't always respond.
Edited to add: lack of bluetooth is also a bummer.

There are plenty of tabs out there that will service you better than the KF. If you get $300 for your iPad1 seriously think about looking around at other options. After using an iPad I truly doubt, in the long run, the KF will satisfy you. More memory, more options, a much better chance at HC or ICS (very much doubt the KF will get either) and overall better android experience. Comparing the iPad (any version) to the KF is not really valid no matter who says so IMO. The only things they really share, IMO, is that they are both serviced by closed gardens.
That said, welcome back from the "Dark Side".
What I wish I could do is have both. But the wife says only one tablet. Just kind of ready something for something new. The majority of what I do is Netflix, Hulu, and web browsing. I'm thinking the fire will do all those things well and hoping the developer community gets behind this and we get some fun roms.

I can respect that. But don't buy something mainly because it's "new" and "flashy" or "because everyone is getting it". Get something that is scalable, stands good chance of upgrading and will provide you with a learning milieu that truncated e-readers likely will not.
Just food for thought.
Check out the HTC flyer at Best Buy for $299 and look at forums here. It has much better specs and will run netflix and hulu plus.

I really like the 7 inch size. The iPad can be too big sometimes.
It all depends on your needs. I for one love my fire. But you have to keep in mind it does have its limitations, aka memory. It has "only" 6.5 Gb of useable storage, personally I feel that is plenty of storage for my needs. I mean I've downloaded a ton of apps and have barely made a dent, but, if you plan on loading up the kindle fire with a ton of music and movies, you may want to think twice, me personallly ill just stream everything. I might load some music on it for a trip, but beyond that I don't see the point. Enough with my storage rant though. I'm really enjoying the kindle fire, I actually have grown to love Amazons custom skin it just makes sense to me, even though at times it can be a little frustrating because of some.minor lag, which I'm sure can be fixed with a software update. But, one thing I enjoy about the interface, is depending on what section you are in, aka books, apps, you can quickly access the store for that content, very User friendly, but if you don't like it then side load go launcher ex and you got an experiance like other android counterparts. And another feature I feel is well done is the search with a quick click of a.button you can choose to search device or web, fantastic. Plus watching Hulu plus on the fire is great, the $199 price tag is really a steal in my opinion.

I sold my ipad 1 around 2 weeks ago to make a switch to the kindle fire and loving it. The whole experience is much smoother, no more checkboards when I scroll down webpages and having multiple tabs open didnt make the tablet unusable. Though I do kinda miss the app store and itune university. I use my tablet mainly for browsing and reading so the smaller form factor is perfect. Before the kindle fire I thought about switching to the galaxy tab 8.9 its significantly easier to handle than the ipad weight just under a lb. I really liked it but for less than half the cost and comparable specs I took the kindle fire over it

The flyer is 7 inches. I don't have any big problems with Fire, you just might want to check all your 7 inch options before you decide. Of course with the Fire, you can't beat the price.
I sold my 16GB iPad 1 (WiFi) for ~$225 and got a Fire, I couldn't be happier.
I use an ipad2 as a college book and internet lol... if you can justify using it and getting a better experience go for it. I have an android phone so that would be too much android in my life. I'm sticking with the ipad and android together. Makes the one offset the other when one becomes lacking.

I sold my ipad earlier this year and picked up a nook. I just couldn't stand iOS. Sold the nook and now i have a Fire. I like it a lot, and i'm really tempted to keep it. I have to say I am disappointed with the lack of storage. As far as i am concerned that is the only major drawback, albeit a large one for me as I can at times be without internet for several months at a time. This is primarily when I want a tablet for movies and reading.
As far as its intended function, as an e-reader, it performs quite well. With wi-fi turned off and the brightness at about 80%, i'm seeing an hour for every ten percent down to 15% before I plug it in.
I think it is a great size. For the most part it is quite portable. Its got some heft to it, but it feels right and solid. I'm sure you have read plenty of reviews by now, so no point in me going on about it.
I say bite the bullet and pick one up as it is quite cheap. If u don't like it sell it, i'm sure these things will be sold out for an amount of time some where, at that point you definitely shouldn't have a problem getting your money back. Heck, pick one up locally, most places now have an extended return policy because of the holidays. I've already bought two as gifts for my family when I go to visit them.

If you have access to usb power source when you are away from internet, you might check out the seagate go flex satellite( 500gb hdd with built in wifi). You can sideload the app and stream media from the drive to your device. The app isn't terrific, but it does work on the fire. The hdd acts as a router and creates a network between it and your device.
Well, my problem has been fixed. I'm keeping the iPad, so the kids and wife can use it and I'll be buying a Fire right around Xmas. Talked the wife into letting me buy one after saving up some money. Thanks all for the recommendations.

Should I get a cheap nook?

I've been borrowing an iPad two and I really can't see the lure especially for the price. Could some of you guys say wether it's a good idea to pick up a nook ?
You can get them relatively cheaply on eBay and I love the idea of having cyanogen mod on a tablet.
I'm not so fussed about cameras and all that the iPad camera is horse **** anyway.
Interested to know what you guys think?

Well, here's my 2 cents worth. I got my husband an iPad, the original one. We both already had Android phones. My kids got me my Nook Color for Christmas, at my request. I feel the iPad is so limited in how you interact with it. It has no proper file system, so if you want to put files onto it, they have to be associated with a certain app. My husband was hoping to use it to take pdfs and excel files with him to look at and edit at work. It's a huge hassle. Apps generally cost more, in my experience, on the iPad. There are possibly more accessories for the iPad, but they tend to cost more, too.
As for the Nook Color, I am very happy with it. I have a 16GB microSD card in it that I can boot into either CM7 or CM9 (Ice cream sandwich). Or, if I choose, I can boot into the original Nook OS. I ran a script to stop updates, and am at 1.3. So, I can boot into the Nook OS, read books, get freebies from B & N on Fridays, and read for an hour a day, in the store, any Nook book. Honestly, I spend most of my time booted into Android. I find my Nook runs much faster on Android. I sometimes have trouble tethering my Nook to my phone on the Nook OS, but generally it works better on Android. (I have rooted my HTC Evo 3D phone.) I can do just about anything on my Nook on Android that I can do on my Android phone, except make calls. The Nook TABLET actually has a mic on it, but there aren't as many hacks for it as there are for the Nook Color, yet. I think that someday we might be able to either use a USB mic or get a BT mic working on the Nook Color, but it's not certain. I personally like the apps better that are available on the Android market vs the apps in the Apple app store. And, my primary desktop is an iMac. I also dual boot both my aging laptop and my netbook to Windows and Linux.
Of course, you can totally replace the Nook OS by flashing Android to the onboard memory called emmc. If you have the proper microSD card, though, some people say the difference in speed is negligible. The onboard memory is actually 8GB of SanDisk flash memory.
If you decide to boot from a microSD card, read at least some of the thread linked below on choosing a microSD card. In general, the class 10 and even some class 6 cards do not work well when running the OS from them. I got a 16 GB SanDisk from Costco that says it's a SanDisk Mobile Ultra. It's benchmarks for both writing small files and large files are pretty good. And it was only $20.
I suggest you get a warranty for your Nook Color, wherever you get it. There is an ongoing problem with the charger cable going bad. And, though it is a micro USB cable, it is proprietary in the sense that it will only charge in the fast mode if you have one from B & N. If you have troubles, most people seem to be able to get one from either a B & N store or over the phone with their support, but only if under warranty. I got the 2 year warranty from B & N, which is $40. If you have to go buy a new cable, it comes with the AC charger and costs $24.95! Possibly your best bet is to buy one of the refurbed Nook Colors from B & N's ebay store. The current price is $149, with free shipping. It doesn't state, but I think they come with the standard 1 year warranty. I would check on that, though. And also ask it you can get the extended warranty for it. Though we have a warranty from Square Trade for our iPad, I wouldn't do it for the Nook. I think it's better to go through B & N because of the charging cable problem.
If you want to root your Nook Color and load Android into the memory, there are many threads telling you how to do that in the Developers sub-forum. Otherwise, here's some threads you might want to read:
Thread on choosing a microSD card
Thread on making a dual boot microSD card
How to keep your Nook from updating
Barnes and Noble has info at their "book clubs"
If you get a used one, and hope to use the Nook's own OS at all, be sure the seller deregisters the Nook, or you will have a hard time using it as a Nook.
When I bought mine for $250, it was the cheapest tablet at that pricepoint. Now that more powerful tablets are available for $250, I can't make that argument anymore. However, if you can get one for $150 or less, it's still a hell of a value.
If you're not interested in B&N content, there's no reason to bother with the B&N firmware. With a used device, warranty isn't in the picture. You might as well pick one up cheap, flash over whatever version of firmware you prefer (I recommend CM 7.2 RC0 Mirage) and start having fun with it.
I'm holding on to my NC until more options open up at the $250 mark, at which time, I'll probably dump it. If the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus were $250 instead of $350, I'd jump today. In the meantime, the NC is doing just fine.
Wow thanks for all your replies! Very helpfull. I think they've got to be worth a shot for the price im seeing them.
When you say there is a problem with The charger is it with the adaptor itself or the NC's units micro female port?

When I bought mine for $250, it was the cheapest tablet at that pricepoint. Now that more powerful tablets are available for $250, I can't make that argument anymore. However, if you can get one for $150 or less, it's still a hell of a value.

I agree with the your assessment. There are rumors of an Ausus 7" tablet coming out next quarter at $250.

Neither. It's the "blinking" cable. From what I've heard, the micro USB end goes bad. There's an indicator light in that end of the cable. There has been speculation that it overheats the connector that then breaks or otherwise fails. I've only had mine since Christmas and have been fine so far. <crosses fingers; says a prayer> The bad thing is, the connector, while looking like a normal micro USB plug, is actually longer than others. If you don't have this longer one, it will only charge slowly...
my 2 cents
If you can get one for $150 I'd say go for it. Otherwise I'd hold off for a bit. There are supposed to be a whole slew of ICS tablets coming out soon.
My only gripes about my NC is that the single core processor struggles a bit even when overclocked, and the horrific Bluetooth range. Beyond that and for the price it certainly was an unbeatable deal when I got mine over a year ago.
As to the charging cable either I'm lucky or it's my incredible OCD when it comes to treating electronics gingerly, but I've not had an issue at all with it. I'm not sure a $40 warranty on a sub $200 dollar device that is pretty well outdated makes sense. If you are concerned about a potential cable failure you can do what many others have done and get a warranty replacement preemptively.

i bought a refurb for my son for xmas - he's 5
however my wife, who has had her NC since last xmas wanted to see if she liked CM7 enough to commit (now she dual boots off sd card) so we bought his over the summer, figuring it would give her 6 months to "play with it" while I got it prepped for him.
as I was wrapping it up, I had it plugged in to charge (so it would work when he unwrapped it), cable got hooked around the chair and the whole thing pulled off the desk.
everything looked ok, but it always took a few tries to get it charging, then last week, it stopped charging.
swapped cables with hers, no go
So this weekend bought one from CL for $100, still wrapped in the plastic.
So I was pretty good with that.
HOWEVER if anyone knows of a step by step on getting these APART (I know some sites do "tear downs) I would love to try and fix this one.
I believe that the USB plug needs to be reseated/resoldered.
I just dont want to 'rip it up' if there is a more appropriate way of getting it open.

so I guess what I was saying is, if you can live w/o the warranty CL is a great way to go
HOWEVER I do plan on digging around to see if his can get fixed via warranty (the other reason I dont want to rip it apart)
thanks

I will second (third?) the suggestions to try to find one for under $150. Heck, I think I've seen refurbs for $120-130 a couple times too. I got mine almost a year ago when they were first $200. It was totally worth it then, but there is now a lot more competition at that price point. Idk if it's because of the Touchpad fire sale or what (that also makes a great Android tablet, btw).
I don't miss the cameras either. Sometimes it would be nice to have GPS, but not a big deal. That said, CM makes these things GREAT. I mainly use mine for reading still, but it's capable for light web browsing, and is super portable for a tablet.
The Nook Color has been as cheap as $70 after cashback at overstock.com. I didn't get in at that price but I did pick up 9 for family @ $120 right after black friday.
I got mine when it first came out for $250 and haven't regretted it. That being said, last month I picked up a 10.1" lenovo K1 when it was on sale for $250 after instant discount and $30 off $150 coupon. I use my 10.1" a lot more than my nook now but still consider the nook an excellent value (it's a great device for anyone willing to take the time to get android on it).
$250 will be the new price point for android tablets. It will get harder and harder to sell them at $500 when there's so many cheap ones out there. The K1 is at $280 again but it's in store only and it'll be harder to apply the coupon.
Not sure if you're following, but it's actually $130 right now through B&N's ebay store:

Well... here is my in depth post on the pros and cons of getting a Nook Color...
Well... where to start...
CONS:
The Nook is HEAVY - 500gramm sure weight a lot and comparing it to other 7" tablets it's the one that makes your hand fall off if you try to read for more than an hour...
It's lacking cameras and mics... and even bluetooth mics dont work properly with it at this point... so... thats a big con for me...
Even if taking pictures sucks on tablets... its just too damn comphy to get on Skype and have a Videotalk on there...
Sadly no Video on Nook, hell - not even normal phonecalls on it...
Work-In-Progress Android 4 being the last con in it... because its as the name said work in progress... you will encounter a whole bunch of things that dont work just right yet... if you dont mind stepping down to 2.3.7 Android though and thus missing out on Tablet-Optimizations Android 4 brings in then this might not apply to you however.
PROS:
The most awesome battery life you will ever see on a Android 7" Tablet... I was able to squeeze 10 hours of REAL use out of this tablet with the right settings... (turned down screen brightness, wifi off, etc.)
Sadly other devices range from the worst (2 hours) to the okay range (8 hours) - but ive never seen one top the nook in that part...
This is most likely thanks to efficiently picked hardware, software optimizations and the 4000mah battery it runs on (while other tablets range from 3000 to 3700mah).
Fast Charging will be the next PRO... most tablets use a normal USB Port to charge, thus being limited to 5V for charging... (Ramos W6HD for example)
The nook comes with a special cord and charger that allows for 13V charging... speeding the charging process up by more than two times.
A lot of merchandise available will be the final PRO to it - similiar to iPad & Co its easy to find a whole bunch of Nook gadgets to work with, be it that extra cool book case you're looking for or some nice anti-gloss foils for the screen, you will easily find those for the nook.
Not as easy on other tablets...
CONCLUSION:
Depending on what you want to do with the Tablet... whether you want the full Android 4 Tablet experience or not... and so on... you might be looking for something else...
Also... the price is another thing...
Previously the nook was the "cheap mans' tablet" - as tablets were expensive as hell...
However... you might be better off getting a Ainol Novo 7 Elf or Ainol Novo 7 Aurora...
By now, they are easily on par with the Nook... both price/value wise as well as feature wise... and last but not least they come with cams, mics and a proper Android 4 OS...
The only thing you would lose when going for the Novo Elf or Novo Aurora is 2 hours of battery runtime... giving you 8 hours instead of 10...
Last but not least, stay away from the Ramos W6HD... what looks like a good deal on the paper is broken by the awful battery runtime (4 hours).
I say... give all of those options a thought... try to get some info about the devices I just mentioned to you... and then just grab whatever you think best fits your daily needs.
If you get a used one, and hope to use the Nook's own OS at all, be sure the seller deregisters the Nook, or you will have a hard time using it as a Nook.

I feel like this is all i have been good for lately, but you could always do a hard reboot in that situation. 8x restart with 'n', power and volume depressed. That gets you into the Nook OS, registering and navigating to the in-froyo Erase & Deregister option in the settings gets you a virgin Nook OS.
I have been messing with my system files a lot lately, so maybe a clean wipe isn't as big of a deal to me as to some other folks, but were the hard reboot better known, I think we would see fewer "Bricked! Help!" threads.

More excellent advice I might look at saving and spending a bit more to get something decent, I'm a little late for the nook-mobile me reckon. Tablet world has moved fast.
It's not that simple

I bought another NC (used from Craigslist) a month ago and went through this exercise and what you suggest will indeed get the NC back to "factory fresh" state but if the previous owner didn't hit that "deregister" link while they were logged on to that NC prior to selling it to you, you will NOT be able to register it to your B&N account as it will show in the B&N system that the NC with that serial number is registered to the previous owner.
I spent at least an hour on three separate B&N chat sessions and at least 15 minutes on the phone with the B&N Support person to get that answer. The Support associate told me that since the original owner doesn't have the NC anymore they would have to call the 800 number and ask them to deregister that NC off of their B&N account before I could register it to my B&N account.
In my case the previous owner was kind enough to call that 800 number to do just that. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to register it with B&N on my account but it would still be fully functional with a custom ROM on it.
Well... for me its a easy decission really...
B&N doesn't operate in europe, I'm in europe, so it never was an option to begin with...
I got my Nook Color because at the time it was the cheapest way to get a properly working relyable tablet and so far I'm okay with it.
I get my books off drm-free bookstores in the internet, use FBReader to read them and Mango for my daily manga needs.
That and a whole bunch of IT Crowd Episodes + Animes help me stay a happy camper on my CM9 Nook Color.
The nook is great because its easily rootable. The screen is wonderful.
However.... I might be the only one who thinks this, but even with decent overclocking, android (cm7 AND cm9) is jumpy and laggy.

second thoughts?

As much as I really want the nexus 10 I'm having second thoughts... for the 500 + shipping I could get a really bomb ass tv.
I'm conflicted.
I know people on here will say go for the tab... and i really do miss having a tab since I sold my tf700... but should I get a tab since I already have a cell phone? I mean it's nice to have, but at the same time I'd really only use it when I'm traveling which isn't too often...and even then i've got my cell phone with games on it. ugh. what to do, what to do...

Well, i think it depends on how often you travel? From my point of view i'm kinda in the same boat, with the added thing of having a young boy who gets bored in the car quite quickly, I was debating if I should buy one or not for the same reasons, then thought, well I can get a holder for the car, then the boy can use it to watch Nemo over and over and over and over again! lol, or play games or do whatever.
So do I want to pay £150 ish to get a half decent DVD player for the car, or can i justify a tablet? I can justify, between me using it when traveling, the missus, and the boy, then yes its worth it.
I think you know if you want it or not, if your racking your brain trying to find a reason to buy it, you don't need it. save your money. When it comes down to it, this is gunna change the tablet market with Android, all the other makers are gunna have to react, in 6 months, with the tegra 4 chips and everything else then their will be better out their. so wait.
I'm actually thinking what do I use a tablet for that my phone doesn't do? Not much. I do game on them if I'm traveling, but I don't travel that far for more than a day or two very often. I actually had a nice gaming laptop that I gave my wife because I never really used it when traveling. lol
nexus 7 AND a tv is looking like a better option right now... or maybe just a really nice tv.
Or get a really nice tv and stream your phone screen to the tv instead.

Yeah but what can a 7" tablet offer what a mobile phone can't? Neither is as comfortable for browsing and media consumption as a print quality 10" tablet, and this is why I have no interest in 7"-ers. A phone and a 10" tab. Phone and convertible. Phone and ultrabook. Phone and desktop computer. Phone and... a slightly bigger phone? Meh.
If you're unsure, hold out, it can be a lot of money to some people. Wait at least until some solid reviews are out and make a decision.
You should only be an early adaptor if you can justify spending the cash on something you really don't need.

ya I want another tablet for sure, but the infinity kind of burned me with the horrible io performance. i will wait until i'm in a better financial place after the holidays and see what third party tablet makers put out since the nexus 10 will obviously be a big influence for them if they want to compete.

I'm still expecting Google to make a price/storage adjustment in a couple months, just like they did with the N7. Don't think I mean that the base price will drop below $399 tho.

Mmhm.. and you'll get about half the usability of a tablet. Same virtual real estate as a phone, scaled up to a big and beautiful 40". Nice.
Personally, I'm planning on both the 4 and the 10 from the Nexus line. I see the phone as a more portable substitute for the 10 if I'm not hauling my bag around, plus it's quicker to just pull out of my pocket. But if I'm on a train or otherwise waiting/chilling in one place (like on my bed or something), I'd rather I had the tablet. That's why I haven't considered a 7-inch tablet, either.

It depends on how much you use your phone. I was convinced that tablets are gimmicky and useless until I bought a galaxy note and started using it for all my media consumption, games and Web browsing. Recently I even started to get annoyed with how small my note was (desktop websites look cramped) so I pulled the trigger this week and got my first tablet.
Long story short, if you don't feel like you absolutely need a tablet (or if you really need that tv) then hold on a little bit.

I've got a 4.3" phone, a 4.7" phone, a 5.3" phone, four (count 'em, 4) 7" tablets, an 8.9 inch tablet, used to have a 10.1 (and next week I'll have a N10).
Different horses for different courses. Phone is always with me, so it gets a lot of use by default...when I'm not at home. Once I get home, it goes on the charger and unless I get a call or text, I don't use it. It's an inferior entertainment/consumption device compared to a tablet.
My 7" tablets also travel with me quite a bit, often coming to work with me, and I'll whip out my current favorite, the N7, when I'm on a longer trip by plane, train, or automobile instead of my phone. It'll move about the house or hotel room with me as, mostly for ebook reading and light surfing. Biggest benefit is much better battery life than my phone so no in-flight charging worries, and it's damned near perfect for books (and light surfing).
My 8.9/10" tablets are more for home use, and usually hang out near the couch. I'll bring one on a trip if it's for more than a few days, but it never comes to the office with me. At home though, it gets used a LOT. Besides the couch, it's my bathroom Netflix/DLNA weapon of choice, it's a better surfing and magazine experience, and in some cases a better gaming experience as well. Plus hands-down it's better for productivity tasks (documents and spreadsheets) than a phone or a 7" tablet.
So I have a use case for all my various sized Android devices, and there's no one-size-fits-all device in that collection. But if I had to cut my devices down, I'd be able to get by with just the phone and a 8.9-10" tablet. The 7" is nice, but a bit more narrow-focused (and I could probably sub my N7 out for a good Kindle or Nook eInk device, if it came to that, since it's mostly used as a reader).
got a nice 42 inch sharp aquos 120hz tv... but i still have the void that a tablet should fill. LOL I think i'll wait not only due to money reasons, but to see if a 64gb comes out, or if I really would even use one... I think a 7inch phone is what i'm holding out for one portable device i can use on the couch, the bed, or anywhere and it'll have enough screen real estate... but the nexus 10 looks oh so good. If sprint had the 7 on mobile contract i'd buy it.
