Fennec, whats that? O yeh, that parasite of a sloth browser

are we there yet with technology? I always thought pico projectors were useless gimmicks, but if they can do that keyboard thing that would be neat

that virtual lazer keyboard you see already exist, it only cost $170+
http://www.thinkgeek.com/interests/techies/8193/
the wireless aero mouse also exist by logitech only cost $350+
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/mice/devices/3443
the phone with projector i've seen it already on DX extreme website for around $280+
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.17069
Fenec for android is still in Alpha but it exist
so if you can marry all of the above together, you will get what you saw on the video
the only cool thing on the video is how compact they were able to put all that stuff together in 1 phone.... unlikely at this point in time with our current technology, or nano tech is not mature enough yet to produce such small devices with all the required components inside, at least not for mass production.
just the lazer keyboard itself is the size of that phone, same goes with the aero mouse

ive one of such ultra tiny projects and it works decently well. uses a LOT of battery.
fennec is also pretty much awesome interface wise etc. it's just way too slow for real use right now. (like the sgs without lagfix )

i wonder how much they will advertize the price for the phone if they actually do make it to the market

That is like the coolest phone / mini computer I have ever seen!!! I want it NOW!!! lol!!!

I still don't get how people can bag out Fennec considering it's in alpha and Mozilla make a point of stating under status 'Firefox for Android is in very early development.'

Wow... If they actually make it that good I want it *stares in love*

its renamed to firefox on android and still starts after 1 sec on my phone and using 40 to 50 mb ram

RedFly Price reduction to $199... through 10/31

For those of you that have been salivating for a RedFly... but couldn't justify $500...
Here
wow, i never really took a good look @ redfly and only had a vague understanding of it. but after seeing what it does, and does not do...and considering that it doesn't have a HD or OS onboard, i'm not blown away that it actually cost 500 bucks. Even a cheap laptop or eeE/micro pc would be better than buying this at full price. but still good deal nonetheless. the 200 dollar price does make it much more attractive
DONT buy this piece of shi%, I bought one and used it on my tilt. Worst thing i ever bought. Save your money. Hell Best Buy has laptops NOW starting at 400.00, and they have RAM, HD, OS. you know COMPUTER things. JUNK CRAP TERRIBLE, i wouldnt piss on it if it was on fire.
And thats all I have to say about that......

wow. Ya know, decaf tastes just like the regular kind without all of those nasty side effects.
I didn't need another laptop... if you count the tilt, I already carry two with me whereever I go.
If I can eliminate one by adding a device the size and weight of a paperback... it is worth exploring.
I just received mine... and am typing on it right now. The keys are small... and I will have to try it for a couple of days before I make any long term decisions....
I would much prefer software to do this with, like mymobiler but with scaling abilities.
I already own a notebook and take it everywhere as well as my phone, so this product would fill my needs.

One question... the internet.
Does Redfly allow you to see imbedded frames on the internet? I don't know if this limitation on the Tilt is caused by PIE or by the reported screen size.
If you goto the yahoo page, do you first get the "mobile" page or the real page?
Please let us know, thanks!

I use Opera, so I can choose whether or not you get the mobile page.
However, it is just a screen device. If the Tilt doesn't see imbedded frames, neither will Redfly.
That, by the way, is my biggest complaint after the first 24 hours. That there is stuff that just can't be stretched or resolved.
Redfly doesn't understand SPB Mobile shell - one of my fav programs... or the latest version of Opera. It doesn't work on Skyfire. It doesn't understand games like, of all things, MONOPOLY because the screen can't be stretched.
It needs a "sizing" switch that allows a collapse to a regular form factor when necessary.

I use SOTI, and love it too.
I am hoping, though, for a life without carrying around a 6 pound laptop and charger just so I can see the same screen I would see if I looked at my phone.
That is the biggest benefit to Redfly... it ADDS to the real estate on the handheld so that you can increase fonts in things like Word, Excel and PP so that you can actually READ them. Far more map coverage on Google and Tom Tom navigators.
Just wondering has anyone found a way to print with Redfly?

Again, Redfly does not add any functionality to your Tilt that wasn't already there.
However, your could print via bluetooth or plug in a flash drive and print directly from the printer.

I must admit that it's a cool device. For $200 is not that expensive... But for the price, I rather pay $100 extra and get myself an 8" laptop and do the same thing with it, but with an OS and better software.
HOLY CRAP! No WAY would I pay for that. Just get My Mobiler: http://www.mtux.com/ or many links: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=my+mobiler&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=
I just bought one of these. its awsome for web browsing, typing, navigating and logmein it gets an F- at playing videos thats it biggest limitation. from what I read the software can be upgraded so I think its a good deal.
for $199 you could have bought one of those older laptop models that you can still find at clearence stores and you'd have 1000x better device LOL
Pentium or Celeron processor, real Windows XP or linux if you want , real laptop - I hope I don't need to state the differences between this and that crappy display enlargment for WinMo called RedFly

That's too bad. I'd really like to take this along to classes because my 14" laptop is too big. But my school's class-link sites depend on frames.
Therefore this Redfly is totally useless for me. If the next gen. WinMo has fully functional Internet Explorer on it (frames, flash, shockwave, youtubery) then I can see a use for the Redfly.
Until then...........
One note, the 1x6x9" size is utterly perfect! Why oh why can't there be a 8 hr+ XP laptop that size!!!!!!!

/edit/
actually:
My 1998 laptop (yes it is 10 years old *and* it is still working although I don't use it daily anymore, when it was new it lasted about 4+hrs on a single battery (it came with 2 spare ones):
Dimensions: 9.3" (W) x 6.9" (D) x 1.4" (H) (so actually the size you're asking for, but 10 years ago LOL)
http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/html/tm310.html
I keep it as book reader / music player / browser / communicator beside my bed (running Win2000 perfectly)
and I *bet* it still beats the RedFly in usability even today

So I asked the Android team about multi-touch at I/O fireside chat

And in front of hundreds of android devs they stated their reasoning for not supporting it is because there is no hardware that properly supports it. The Dream panel for eg has a flawed method of multi-touch (this qwe know).
So there it is. Until the hardware comes out, no multi-touch for you.
Cheers
Leon
Regarding custom firmware: one of the google panelists, whose name escapes me, would be happy to see being able to load custom firmware and factory firmware alongside each other.. interesting to see.
And most important of all XDA developers got a shout out by the panel though they are worried we may be returning bricked phones to stores under warranty.
The real reason is that apple holds patent on this multitouch stuff and google don't wanna pay for this.

I highly doubt apples magic gesture patent would hold water in a court of law. It seems almost like a flexing of muscles, by a frightened body-builder who is in no shape to fight the competition.
patent laws are pretty cut and dry. this is what happens when a google ceo is on apples board of directors
I think Android doesn't really need multitouch. JF's multitouch browser is nowhere near as good as say, the iPhone's Multitouch implementation. I liked the look of that Circular Zoom that was demoed on the Magic a while back.
The Android team has already said if someone makes a public API for it, they will consider adding it to the official release. At the moment, the multi-touch JF et al have are more hacks then anything else. The Android team (probably) don't have the time to add full blown multi-touch support + api.
Afaik, Apple's patent is for specific gestures only, but it would never hold up if contested. MS has been showing off surface well before iPhone and there have been other people working on multi-touch for years now.
Even if this was implemented into the G1, it would still be to slow to run on this thing. Heck , it has a hard time running the browser alone.
i agree that the wheel zoom on the magic that was demoed months ago is cool. i also agree we dont need multi touch zoom or any other type as long as we have what we do now. i like the implentation thus far. still think its shady that we have people in both companies on the board of directors, CORRUPTION starts here. (lets hope not).

Well I read that the iPhone 3G's internal processor speed is only at 412 MHz. Whereas, the G1 is 245-384 (depending on load) and you can overclock it to it's superior speed of 528MHz (which is what it's advertised at)
Also the iPhone holds 128MB of memory.. I believe the G1 has 192MB (i think.. I may be wrong)
I don't see why it would be that much slower. Mine doesnt have a hard time running the browser at all

Actually 192 is correct, but misleading: Half of this is actually reserved for the radio! The most the Linux kernel EVER CAN SEE, is 93 megabytes! This is the real problem with the G1 and Magic right now; too many apps running (or the memory hogging browser) and the non-foreground one(s) get terminated due to lack of memory.
Ever wonder why your ConnectBot session dies? Why StreamFurious may randomly stop while browsing? This is why!

But iPhone has Gigs of memory for apps and the rest.
Also, I thought their CPU was actually a 620 MHz ARM underclocked to 412 MHz.
While I agree that multitouch would be a bit useless in the browser, there are many application possibilities that would benefit from the use of multitouch. I'd love to have tap tap revolution playing on my G1, just not possible without multitouch.
Also the g1 is runs apps behind a vm while the iphone apps are compiled to run directly on the processor, or at least how i understand it.

Well .. I'm quite disappointed too .. but iPhone just wont cut it for me. For example I require playback of non-converted videos in common formats (avi, mpg, flv). No smartphone can do that well at the moment.
I'm at the moment I'm staying with Xperia and hoping that Palm wont block 3rd part media player development ..
But sure, iPhone, especially the new one, looks great, and everything it can do it does better. Way better.

The panels interface was indeed the most useless thing ever. That's why I uninstalled it. Although you have had some problems with the X1, you'll encounter new ones with the new iPhone. Add to that, you'll be paying a bucketload of money for that new device. Why would you buy a MacBook? Windows mobile =/ Windows.

All in all, personally I prefer the X1 (or any WVGA HTC WM phone) over the iPhone because it's customizable. I like being able to tinker around with it. I also prefer Microsoft's approach (although, I'm aware, they're just as imperfect as any other company) to operating systems.
Then again the iPhone does have much better graphical support, smoother UI etc.
If only Apple and Microsoft would merge
iPhone is for tech illiterate sheep that want to look trendy in front of their equally degenerated friends. Flashy, useless, unproductive toy with features that phones had in 1999............
let us know how you like your iphone.
i was looking and playing with one the other day. it was ok but i like the customization that you can do on the windows mobile. i like the big screen but i didnt like the touch (capacitance?). i like to use my fingernails a bit and it doesnt work on the iphone screen.
The major problem with the iPhone for me is the lack of a hardware keyboard. I can handle a normal phone keypad, prefer a qwerty keyboard but cannot type on a touchscreen. I don't care what some people say, for me, a touchscreen keyboard is not good enough.

have You ever had an iphone in Your hand? obviously You are talking nonsense. these days You can do almost every thing on ipod that it's doable on winmo. okay... it is not so customizable, but it's interface is simple and just works. works like a charm. I guess when you get something like an iPhone it works fine out of the box you dont need to tweak it to get it right which is which is what i dont get from windows mobile devices - why are they not already tweaked to offer the best performance?
simple example - why, oh why those simple tweaks like increasing of glyph and filesystem cache are not factory set for performance??

Xperia broken.
Last Saturday my X1 broke. I was at a party and decided to jump over a car gate at an old summerhouse. Thing is, it wasn't steadied at all or fastened in the ground, so it swung with my body, resulting in me landing hard on it and it gave my Xperia a good blow. Now half the screen is dead and the slider part is crooked, and I don't have insurance on it so it'll cost me about 100 - 200 dollars to get it fixed.
That is why I'm getting an iPhone 3GS when it comes to Sweden. I like the seamless Mac experience that just works (and is really great looking) and, actually, the fact that I'm not gonna want to flash it every other day.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm quite the avid customizer of all things techy, and I love playing around with settings and tweaks just to feel like I'm improving my device. Now really. I understand why the people here at XDA like their devices - it's because of the new roms. BUT. It's simply retarded for the company making the phone not to include those optimisations OOTB. I understand that a lot of things is set slower by default to gain battery and ensure a safe phone, but let's face it. An iPhone provides a better experience for ALL customers, not only the ones who know how to tweak their device.
I'd suggest by simple human psychology patterns that people like tweaking their phones because it brings them a satisfactory sense of being special - knowing something not all the owners of a particular thing knows. Though, think about it. It would be kind of nice to be free of the constant urge to flash your phone, all you flashoholics? I sure know that I feel that way. Sort of like being free from a time consuming freedom or wanting a schedule when you have nothing but free time.
That's just my two cents, I won't miss my Xperia much. I'm rather glad it broke (although it was a blow to my economics, but hey).

Yea i started flashing my phone but then one day i realised that the stock ones are just as good really and more stable but your right about the tweaking and such it makes you feel like your phone is faster - Maybe when you start using your iphone you will start to miss and acknowledge the little things that make the xperia really good but we will see

Getting an Android Tablet?

Any one here planning on getting one of the what seems like dozens of Android based tablets that will be coming out later this year?
What about Google TV? Anyone planning on springing for it?
I have already looked into many of the tablets that are available over seas right now.
Some are as low as $100 bucks... got to do more research though.
I've noticed some rumors of really cheap models <$150 (iPed)
But the specs are laughable in some cases even compared to our phones.
I have an iPad and it's pretty nice but it is really lacking in a lot of areas and I can't wait for a Nvidia Tegra 2 Android Tablet to come out so I can sell the iPad and get a real tablet that or one of the windows 7 tablets that are coming out too. I really just want iPad build quality Tegra2 hardware with a 10"+ screen and Android the iPad is really a faster larger iPod touch and iPhone OS has nothing on Android. It would be really nice if the guy who got Android running on the iPhone could port it to the iPad I would be in love because the build quality and the screen of the iPad are top notch pair that without the best mobile OS out and you've got a clear winner!!

I agree, There is no official Android Tablet out there, just the bull**** that comes out of China. If you have been current on engadget, you would have seen their china gadget segment where they show all the knock offs that china sells. I really dislike China in that aspect because they do sell knock offs of real gear. A real tablet in my opinion is not some ****ty operating system that runs one program at a time and does'nt use the "Internet" correctly.
In the mind of Steve Jobs, he is a self indulging lunitic who favors a internet world without flash apparently, A operating system without multitasking, A world without people who have more than 1/4 of their brains. Meanwhile a monkey deep inside apple corporation is telling the dev team how to build a phone os by pointing at bananas and various nuts and fruits.
A real tablet pc in my opinion is a Windows 7/Android based operating system with a ATI or Nvidia based chipset that can run Starcraft 2 or Farcry 2 out of the box. We just need to give the Android team time, they are just getting themselves situated in this field and I know we can expect some amazing **** to come in the future.

Its going to be a looooooooooooong time before we see a tablet that will run games as graphically intense as Far Cry 2. Most pc's other than fairly high end systems can barely run it, if at all................besides, you need a mouse and keyboard for games like that, doesn't fair well with a tablet..................Besides, tablets are a pain to carry around, don't fit in the pocket or on the hip....

I feel with gentures and multi-touch capabilities that we will be without the keyboard before long. i mean its long overdue regardles.... The keyboard is like what.....30 years old now? We need to move on to higher and better things especially with multi touch or even on screen keyboards.
I swear to god if our PCs start going to soft keyboards, I will personally huntdown and gut whoever made the push.

Agreed, I love my keyboard LOL.
I have a couple of tablet devices I use at work and there will never be a virtual replacement for the tactile feedback a keyboard gives you.

I don't think that will work well with games, unless they go the route of the Wii and use motion sensing.....
I love my keyboard and mouse......
I think touchscreen interaction is, at best, a sideways move from physical input devices. The future is going to be a pure thought-based interface.

Wonder who will control who...seems like if you could go one direction with "thought powered" the computer implanting or creating thoughts in your head is not far off...scary thought....i think I may have poo'd a little...

I actually think games like starcraft 2 would be amazing on a tablet, using multiple fingers instead a lot of on screen clicking with a mouse you could micro easily and do a lot at once.
off-topic. anyone ever see people play starcraft (especially koreans) they are amazing good, I used to play sc a lot and couldnt come close to anybody actually good. starcraft is like a national sport in korea, best players are treated like celebrities.
Dig up your old starcraft cd key and you own it for life on blizzard website, you can download it as many times as you want and play online still...
I used my starcraft non broodwar cd key i found in a box in my attic and they gave me broodwar for free...
worth trying out.
Only if I can find mine, looked earlier when i seen i could try to get the beta for sc2

Webtop user experience?

Hi all,
To those that have received or tried an Atrix, could you please share your experience of Webtop? To many of us, how good or bad Webtop is will affect our decision as to whether to buy or not to buy the Atrix, so I personally think that it is important to gather as many thoughts as possible.
So, is it acutally usable/useful? Or just a useless gimmick?
Is it quick enough for normal use? Or is it frustratingly slow?
Is the user interface natural? Or is it confusing?
Is the Firefox same as the desktop counterpart? Or is it dumbed down?
Do extras like Flash or Firefox Addons work correctly? Or is everything locked down?
Is the "virtual phone" window usable and responsive? Or is it a laggy distraction?
Is there an unreasonable limit of resolution/mouse/keyboard/etc? Or is it pretty flexible?
Does it work as advertised? Or are there catches?
Etc.
Please share.
Thanks.
I have only one question.
Can it run citrix or RDP in full screen??

Yes, you'll see Citrix Receiver here running in full screen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WzeIGZKW_Y
Max resolution for Citrix Receiver is apparently 1280 x 1024.
take a look at this very good preview http://www.anandtech.com/show/4165/the-motorola-atrix-4g-preview/6

Thanks. Sounds like it will be quite frustrating to use...

It's been quite usable to far. I'd say it really depends on your needs for whether it is useful or not. I've really been enjoying the media player on my TV as well as the web browsing, and the lapdock is a neat way to charge your phone and have an extra screen to run video on next to your PC, or use for general web browsing and whatnot on the go. Battery seems to be quite good so far.

It's about like using the Asus eeepc netbook I got when netbooks first came around for most tasks, although media definitely works better on the Atrix.

It's very Mac OSX-ish, so I guess it depends on your opinion of that.

Flash works great for the video / games I've tried. I just tried Adblock Plus since I hadn't tried addons yet, and it installed and is functioning correctly. Pretty limited testing there, but its good to know addons are a possibility, not that I'd want to install too many. Remember, you don't even actually have a gig of ram.
However, I currently have the Android window, 2 Firefox tabs and a second Firefox window playing flash video and 35% of the memory on the device is still free, and everything is running okay.

I haven't used it with my PC monitor yet, but the lapdock is 1366x768, and the entertainment dock connects to my HDTV @ 1280x720, and they both seem to work about equally.
The bluetooth keyboard and mouse work great, as does the remote. I plugged in my Razer Naga to the lapdock, and it detected immediately and is working fine as well.
Does it work as advertised? Or are there catches?

Most everything so far seems to work fairly close to how it was advertised. I'd say its more a matter of setting the correct expectations. The phone is slightly more powerful than a good Netbook, and the OS takes less resources than Windows or a full on Linux distro, but on the flip side it IS running both the phone OS and the webtop OS at the same time.
I think how I put it above probably sums it up the best - it runs about as well as a Netbook, but with better media playback power, the catch being it isn't a full blown OS, so outside of documents to go and things of that nature, you most definitely can't replace a full laptop, nor is the entertainment dock as powerful and flexible as a standalone media center PC.
For a device that does a little of all of it though, it does what it does quite acceptably, and I suspect software revisions will only improve things.
If you aren't flush with cash (or a foolhardy tech geek), I'd probably go with the recommendations of most sites. If you don't have a media PC, the entertainment dock is quite nice. If you don't have a laptop, analyze heavily what you will need a laptop for; web browsing, email, video/music and some light document work? The lapdock is fine, particularly if you want the ecosystem benefits of everything you do on your laptop being immediately available on your phone as well.
However, and its a big however, even the launch combo price of $300 for the lapdock makes it extremely questionable to get the lapdock over a netbook or low end laptop, barring your feelings on the ecosystem benefits mentioned. At $500, it is most certainly not worth it.
I hope any of that helps. If you'd like to know more I'll try to answer what I can, but I've also only had it all for a day myself, so I'm still experimenting.

Great review tomit12.
I agree with your assessment, in general it is very much like a first rev netbook. I've been able to install all my normal FF add-ons (adblock, xmarks, url tooltip, no menu, etc) and they seem to work fine.
As far as the "OS" goes it does what it needs to, but is not very customizable. I wish for instance you could move the "taskbar" over to one side and get more vertical space but no-go. I paired a BT mouse with it, and as long as I wait until the Webtob OS has loaded before turning it on, it works great. If I turn on the mouse before WT loads, the scrolling and buttons seem to get messed up.
I'm still not sure if I'll be keeping it. If I didn't know it was all coming from a phone I'd be pretty disappointed in the performance, but knowing it's all coming from my phone, it's kind of impressive.
YMMV
Thanks for sharing your oppinions guys; I was thinking about licking it up; I know I would love it,but I just don't have a use for it now; if someone/ were to take the iPad off my hands I might though.
The concept is amazing though and I'm sure Ill end up getting one down the road.
Rooted/ROM Captivate
Rooted Atrix
Many many thanks for sharing. I cannot express how much I appreciate it.
I think I'll wait first to see if there is going to any way of customising the Linux distro. There are apps (such as Chrome) I want to put in.
