Wow, it's been a *long* time since I've seen someone ask that question. If you don't mind my asking, what software are you trying to install? It sounds like something from early Pocket PC era or even before that when they were called "Palm Sized PC's". Pretty much everything these days is ARM compatable, regardless of processor to avoid the problem of developers having to assemble three separate executables.
If I remember correctly the last WinCE machines to have Hitachi (SH3) processors were the HP500 (Palm sized) and HP600 (Handheld) series. MIPS? I think the long gone (but fondly remembered) Casio's used them.

i install AlarmClock Ver. 0.04
is the only freeware program i can find
it's better then the build in alarm.
that goes off before i have the change to awaken. . .

ahaha!
I remember my Casio Cassiopeia EM505 !!!
PocketPC 2000....mips!

Some Freewares softwares

I think you didn't moved to this site and some others but I like this one coz it is totally free or some high quality software with shareware. Also you will find the incredible work of xda-developers there. I don't know if it is their owned site or they are being taken to that site somehow. Here is the link

Just ordered an xda mini on 02

Hi all
I have just ordered an upgrade to the 02 xda mini from 02. it is my first smartphone and wondered if there is anything i should be aware of. also is there any essential software i need to download either for the phone or for my pc while i wait for it to arrive.
One more thing, i really like the profile settings on my old nokia that allows you to quickly change ringtones and switch vibrate on and off etc so is there any software available that will allow me to the same on the xda. ideally it would also change the profile when i connect the bluetooth headset if thats possible. sorry for so many questions - pesky newbies :?
all advice greatfully received.
thanks
Congratulations!
I had an original xda and an xda II and I think this (XDA Minis S/Pro, aka the Wizard) finally delivers everything I need..., except perhaps for an FM radio, but that's just picky.
I didn't bother loading Clearvue PDF as the Adobe one (v2.0) is free anyway.
I got rid of the O2 Active screen stuff as I never use it and it does slow things down. There are instructions about how to get rid of the O2 theme altogther in this forum, but I just use the Basic set up instead. I quite like the O2 theme stuff.
I will load Tomtom 5 when I get a mini SD card.
Other than that, I'm happy with it as it is.
If I want to switch phone profiles (like a Nokia) I just turn the volume down to vibrate. I only ever have it ringing or silent/vibrate anyway.
Hope that helps. There's plenty more knowledgeable people than me here who can help.
Cheers, Dave.
many thanks for the reply dave,
Another question now, being new to all this, i have been looking around the web for software (well freeware). a lot of sites list different versions such as Mips Arm SH3 etc. my question is which one do i need to download for my xda mini.
Thanks again
neil....
Erm...
Sorry, Neil, b*ggered if I know. All I know is it's a Texas Instruments (TI) chipset, so unless there is a TI option I wouldn't know. So far, all the stuff I've downloaded says PocketPC or Windows Mobile.
I'm not helping much am I ? :?

ARM all the way. Well, actually it's an Intel, but the chipset is ARM compat, so that's what you want. MIPS and SH3 are long gone in PPC.

Mid 2.0 Jsr-82

Hi guys,
I want to run an app in my O2 Atom (WM5), my question is: are there any way (JMV/EMV/Midlet) to run it who support MID 2.0 and JSR-82 (API Bluethooth)?
Thanks a lot...
you should look at j2me from ibm

Some googling brought me to this page: javabluetooth.com and this one: javabluetooth.org. the second one contains source code and jars for a jsr-82 implementation, but no obex.
J9 and jsr 082
Did anyone get BT running with J9 on a PDA or do we start using C#!!

x86 emulator for PocketPC

I'm looking for some x86 emulator that works on Windows Mobile 5 or 6. I used Pocket Bochs, but it doesnt work on my Qtek9100 with WM 5 nor WM 6. Is there any way how to run it on WM5/6 or is there some other x86 emulator for WM5/6? Google didnt found anything else than Pocket Bochs.

plz NO MORE BOCHS name EVER!
there are some other versions and builds of x86 emulators...
dosboxes by n0p - ok on wizard,
n0p cvs build(only which lead me to launch fallout on ppc..13 mb RAM!, master of orion playable, even HOMM was ok, settlers in 800x600, settlers 2...and playable jack jazz rabbit ) - works ok on wizard,
n0p dosbox xscale optimised - cant remember if its ok on wizard,
dosbox 6.1 - didnt want to try,
dosbox for wm03se - i cant find it on HDD...
some older dosboxes(arent optimised),
pdosbox 1.1 - forget it..,
pdosbox 2.0 - damn fast DAMN unstable....didnt test it on wizard
pckdos(made as pdosbox 2.x, more stable than 2.0)-seems to be quite slow on wizard, best mouse control,
pocketdos(fast 286, until 386/486 plugins used, then slow like bochs, i launched fallout on that 1 too ...)....works fine on wizard...
qemm- did not test...
3/4 of speed is to set PROPER cfg options.... so if its slow... its wrong set, or you are trying to make it on improper device ...
i am on wizard now, i was earlier on 400 mhz xscale...trust me wizard is slow with pc emus, always , but dosbox cvs seems to be fastest...when we are talking about usability.
for 286 pocketdos may be best...though.
btw, do not waste time with 195 mhz..lol... start from 243-273 mhz ...
link to dosboxes by n0p..:
http://n0p.tonych.info/?Welcome
btw - theres port of WARCRAFT 2 too, and ONLY sega mega drive emulator, that is able to run EU roms(pirates, cannon fodder, lemmings, lemmings tribes, etc)...
n0p is great.
Guys and gals, don’t forget to check out my brand new, MS-DOS / x86 emulation-related article at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1276884
(Sorry for flooding – IMHO, this article certainly deserves attention because it answers ALL the questions a Windows Mobile user may want to EVER ask about emulating MS-DOS. Make sure you read it!)
wow, respect, seems to be very interesting article!

Windows 95 on Pocket PC

there was i a way of doing so long ago
http://www.pocketgamer.org/showthread.php?threadid=3660
but moust of the links sfrom there are dead or Outdated !
any sugestions of were to gell all i need ?
ie Bochs emulator that works on WM5 etc
niet, forget it....
do you have wizard?
forget it.
bochsppc was made for that screen(hheh)..
forget it.
you may think about win3.1, but believe me...forget about it too.
Wizard can hardly allow dos text mode imo..
btw, i am amazed, that you aren't looking onto Russian foras ...
You have BEST foras i could find...many talented people there...

i got Treo 750 WM5
i got the screen resolution Nyditot Virtual Display to run so it feels like huge screen but u have to scroll through it
and win 95 have sys requirement of "Preferred: Pentium 75Mhz or higher"

you are new in matter, don't you?
your 300, 400, 620 mhz is nothing comparing to x86..believe me. add 4x more gfx data to compute(nyditot).
400 mhz xscale is like 16 mhz 386 in x86 emulated environment(MINUS that 386 gfx speed of course and on dosbox ONLY, 'cause bochs is SLOWERRRR)...
well.. circa about.
max emulated mem is ok, 13 mb with n0p's dosbox, but you won't be able to launch w95 on it(i launched dos fallout with it..hheh.).
bochs may launch w95, but you will have time to drink big coffee(or get nap) to get onto w95 desktop.
And then you will feel pain, cause there's NO KEYBOARD support(as far as i know..).
When u will see desktop, your battery say AAAAAAArgh.
Good luck with installing w95 of course....
win3.1 installation is taking 35 minutes or so? installation of total commander for 3.1 took >20 minutes.
I gave you links, you will find preinstalled win there(made on pc bochs).
go and have fun...
http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=44701
sorry for destroying your vision of having UMPC,...no way.
all you can have from pc on ppc - some old games/dos soft. settlers 1 ,2, colonization..etc.
nothin is speaking the absolute truth about this software. I tried this on my old x50v and even with the 624mhz processor an old 486/66 with 16 megs ram made it look like a joke.
Oh well im givig up th idea
to much to do for it and i dought i will be sucessfull
for start i cant find win95
not tlaking of the rest of the tools i will need
why not just use simple OS if you want something like a windowed operating system, works but still a bit buggy

Windows 95 or 98se emulation?

Do you realize thats the equivalent of asking if my pc can emulate a cray mainframe? Running one windows 95 program would use up all the memory and cpu your entire phone has and then some.
Don't make the mistake of thinking a 200mhz arm processor = 200mhz pentium..the pentium is 1000 times faster and keep in mind the average phone has 20-30 meg of memory...the average pc...ok..even a dog old pentium 150 typically had 128 meg of ram available.
Now do you see why the first poster is laughing at you?

I had a pentium 90 with 16mb ram.
but anyway, I've seen someone running windows 95 on a pocket pc
http://www.pocketgamer.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3660
dont know if it works on wm6 but it looks like you need a large storage card, a lot of patience, a great cpu, lots of memory and a vga screen at least.
good luck
Its not so hard to believe is it?
I had it running on my PSP, so why not my ppc?
Okay, well in that case, whats the best software to access your PC through the internet on your ppc? I used to have this software that worked via wifi for my PSP that would let me operate my windows machine with the psp, but I cant remember its name, and thats not QUITE what im looking for. I want one that will work NON wifi as well
you can use pocketdos or dosbox with bochs plugin to make win95 work. Nevertheless you wont get any decent speed on it.

You are probably referring to VNC and there are plenty of clients that run on ppc.

Yep and your gonna trash the storage card in a short amount of time due to all the read/writes since it's basically using it as a huge swapfile.
there's the emulator of win32-x86 for win32-arm platform. it called wow86 and developed by GreateVK. it is not ready-to-use product yet. but it successfully run some (even simple) x86-applications without modifications.
p.s. wow86 and applications should be placed into the root folder of your device

the PSP has a lesser speed MIPS processor than some of the available ppc's today.
MIPS being the old one we don't use anymore.
and look at what IT can do, without anything but that to run it's games.
and take a look at the NEC MobilePro 900C.
it has an Intel PXA255 400MHz processor, and runs windows ce .net 4.2.
which basically has the same interface as windows xp with classic skins and does alot of the same things (e.g. the full desktop ms office apps).
i think we underestimate the possibility of today's pxa270 624mhz processors and the mobile graphics chips.
but yer, pocketdos and the likes have shown to run windows 95 and 98.
if they were more optimized it could be a possibility to run basic apps and find a way to convert the instruction set to run more complicated apps.
"(e.g. the full desktop ms office apps)."
maybe more full then the office mobile
but i doubt ms would ever compile a full office
nor a full windows for the arm based instructionset
the asm codes are not the same
all the software needs a full recompile to work
unless a full emulator is being used
the maintaince expenses for ms to make something like that
would be staggering
when ms first made windows CE all devices which had CE had the same GUI as NEC MobilePro 900C
but nobody was buying the devices people pref'd the palm way of operating their pda's
so ms made pocketpc series
this was not a step down it was a step besides
CE is not any closer to real windows then pocketpc series it's just different
it's the same core it's the same everything but imput and gui

All very true..but the person asking has a tmobile wing which is a 200 mhz arm chip. The low end of the spectrum (I should know as I have the MDA which is the same chip) and it's gonna run a PC emulator like that CRAPPY as all get out. It has a hard enough time emulating a gameboy. Also in the end would still be easier to "optimize" the code into a ppc version then to try to run bloated regular windows programs where they stopped caring about resources a long time ago.

If you want the full version of MS Office, you can try porting Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org or http://porting.openoffice.org) to Windows Mobile. I'm sure a lot of us here at XDA-Developers would like to see that happen.
i guess that it would be easier to compile it for linux on our phones
being that i think the wm win32 stk is more limited then linux is terms
of which components are alowed
