Programs or Games will not install - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi all,
Having a spot of trouble trying to install anything onto my MDA Vario, I generally search for WM5 software/games and everytime I try to install I get this message.
XXXXX is not a valid pocket PC application
Any clues?
Thanks

Sounds like your installing an exe that needs to be installed via pc using activesync. You can download activesync from the M$ website. The latest version is 4.2 as far as i know.

If you are downloading exe files, try opening them on the pc first. Most of the exe files are installation files that need to be executed from the computer. Some, very few, are actually compiled executables that only have to be copied to the PPC and run from there.
You will also come across CAB files. These files are my preference because you just copy them to the PPC and execute it there, and it installs the files right on the PPC.

Had a problem running activesync, it used to loop my pc when I attached the device. Since then I reinstalled XP Pro OS and reinstalled activesync (probably old version conflicting)
It now works a treat and loads up all my software!
Many thanks

T-Mobile MDA compact with PocketPC platform can't run .exe

This is my first post and I have looked around but it seems no one has the same problem with me or I could miss something.
I just got a MDA compact from T-Mobile UK. I wanted to install some applications but I can only use .CAB files. When I tried to execute a .exe file it says "'file_name' is not a valid Pocket PC application". After that I found out my MDA using Pocket PC platform.
Question is how I can use those .exe files. Would upgrading ROM help?
If they are the correct .exe programs for Pocket PC 2003 SE then I believe they can be installed via ActiveSync.
Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

By far the most .exe files you can download from the Internet for a PocketPC are actually installers that need to be run on your desktop PC, not on the PocketPC itself. Make sure your PocketPC is connected to your PC and ActiveSync is running, then try starting these .exe on your PC.
If your desktop machine is a Mac or any other non-Windows PC, you are out of luck basically - then you need to ask someone with a Windows PC to run these .exe for you, grab the extracted .cab from some temporary directory, and give those to you.
Cheers
Daniel
Just for the sake of completeness, you cannot install Smartphone software on a Pocket PC, despite the similarly-named OS
misunderstanding
so far that I know, exe can only be executed on the desktop pc. while cab files u can executed it in ur pocket pc.
Omg...I'm so dumb...
Thanks a bunch guys

Mac support

I am looking for a way to sync ical with my tasks and appointments on my phone. Ive found software online and whatnot, but nothing for 5.0. anyone know of anything? I would really appreciate it.
Missing Sync for Windows Mobile
I'm using Missing Sync for Windows Mobile on my OS X MBP. It works great and you can install .cab applications with it as well. Unfortunately you still need a windows machine/install to install the .exe stuff but I've found most software vendors for PPC apps supply a .cab install option now as well.
http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_windowsmobile.php
cool ill track down a PC and try it out. THanks!
You won't need a PC to install Missing Sync, it's a Mac universal binary. What I was speaking of are applications for the PPC device that require you to run an executable on a host PC (windows) to then install the application on to your device. However I just found this on another forum and I think I'm going to give it a try.
File Juicer - one of the features is "Extract CAB files from Pocket PC self installing EXE files" once you have the .cab you can install the application via missing sync.

oh I think i found this once, but 40$ and no trial scared me...

Software and games

I have been trying to find a website with downloads of new software and games for the mda compact II. I have found one but non of the stuff seems to work. Does anyone know where I can download any, preferably for free?
Have you tried http://www.freewareppc.com?
thanks, i have tried a couple of those but when i try to run it on the mda compact 2 it just says it is not a valid pocket pc application!?! any idea what is wrong?
.exe files or .cab?
they were .exe
Ahh, you have to run .exe files on your PC while your mobile device is connected with actve sync. Active sync will then install them on your device

Problem with installing .cab files

I have no idea what is happening with my blue angel everytime i try to install sth i get error: instalation of(name of cab file) was unsuccessful. And the second problem is with activesync - i cant sync my BA with PC but I can explore my BA through it.
what do you exactly tryin to install to your BA? please specify it.. not always any applications compatible to our wm6'ed BA
ok: resco explorer 2007, card export II spb pocket plus wibar & a lot of different appz

Your first task should be to set right ActivSync as that plays a vital role in transfering files to BA. Uninstall existing version on PC and install a fresh 4.5 or later version. Then connect BA to PC through USB, PC should recognize your BA and ask for partnership. Go and finish that. Once you have a clean installation of activsync on pc and you have establised the partnership between pc and BA thru ActivSync, try to synch your data with PC.
Your next step should be to install programs. Create a folder "Cabs" on Storage card and through explore of ActivSyc, copy cabs to this folder. Later on, look a the files through File Explorer and double click each cab file to install them.
Hard reset helped with both problems.

Is not a valid pocketpc application

I downloaded a lot of windows pocketpc applications for my Xperia and none of the worked... The following message comes up: "Is not a valid pocketpc application"
I had a lot of 2003, windows 5, and 6 applications, and games and they cant install or open!
How can I fix this?
RE:
Did you just copy the applications straight to your Xpreia then run the files? If so, you need to run most pocket apps on a PC first, then when you connect your Xperia to a PC then a window will pop up showing you the applications that need to be installed onto your Xperia. This is all Automatic, as long as you have installed the Phone onto your PC.
Hope this helps.
Joel
Yeah, that's the only real stupid crap on WM.
I could install any app on Symbian right on phone.
Why the hell they don't make all .CAB's??
I understand with big files, but with 100kB thing is plain stupid,
the whole idea of mobility dies with this.
P.S. I also have some apps like that, so what do I do?
Install it first on PC? And than what, uninstall it after installing on phone??
If you have it "install" on your pc only, it always leaves a .cab file somewhere to be downloaded to your phone later. That's how I extracted the CAB files from the executables I have anyway.
99% of apps can be obtained as cab. Only few I had to install manually (ie there was no CAB or PC EXE installer).
Most are avaialble also aso PC exe, but if someone bothers with EXE installer, he usually has CAB too (in fact he has to, since the PC installation shows some funky windows and then it simply copies the CAB to WM device).
Which is also where you can get the CAB. Unpack the EXE installer (very often possible, Total Commander can do that for example), locate the CAB inside it, and install the CAB manually.

So you had plain luck,
50% of the apps which I want are these f**n .exe. Without any .CAB inside.
But I still didn't get how is the standard operation from PC.
What do I do first? Install the .exe on my computer and than connect phone? And what than?
sync your mobile with activeSync, install the application through pc, activeSync will start the installation on your mobile
Connect the phone to the PC via ActiveSync.
Run the exe on the PC. It installs on PC and copies the cab installer to the phone via ActiveSync. The phone should start the installation automatically.
I still wonder .. what applications are those ?

Great, thanks guys for replies.
I assume while installing I can choose the place of installation (phone/card....)
P.S. Can the .cab installer stay on device, for quick reinstall after upgrade?
Or you have to connect to PC again?
