Can Confirm Firestick 4k VM2402 Still Rootable OOB - Fire TV General

As stated, for all who are interested/looking. The CURRENT Firestick 4k , direct from Amazon is still 100% Unlock/Rootable. I have had the first release, for a while and it finally burned out. So i took the plunge and ordered a brand new one. Obviously it goes without saying that there is only 1 generation of Firestick 4k, but there have been many reports of ppl not being able to run the script on them. Well i am here to confirm that straight OOB direct from Amazon you will get a stick that has no newer than 6.2.8.1 on it, and if you immediately crash the update from installing via the initial setup, you can enable dev options, usb debug, and run the OTA disable app to erase the downloaded update, and block the update channels that are normally contacted. (search forum for the TDUK Firestick Update Blocker). Then it is completely safe to connect back to your network to quickly log into your amazon account, and then disconnect again IMMEDIATELY once completed. (Failure to disconnect immediately will allow built in scripts to start the update download again in the background and then either once you let the device go to sleep, or if you accidentally reboot, it will auto install on the next load!) But if you completed the 1st part, then you're good to go on using the Kamakiri 2.0.1 scripts to Unlock/Twrp/Root without having to open your stick up. EZ - Peezy. 5 min and my stick is ready to re-customize like i want, but i get the new remote, and it seems a bit snappier... might be just me.
*Also, for those who dont have an OTG, or dont want to use one: simple process is to unplug the usb cable from the OEM adapter that comes with the stick, and plug that straight into your computer. 1st get your linux / fireiso environment ready, and have Kamakiri already on the "Waiting for Device" prompt... Then unplug from your adapter block, and plug right into your PC's USB port. Script should immediately take action, and you're still connected to your TV, so after running the 'fastboot-step.sh' , you will see TWRP on your TV. Now just run "adb shell" , in your same terminal window you have open. Then use TWRP cli to install Magisk, or flash your Rom /whatever you plan on doing. No need to swipe to allow modifications, cuz running "twrp install <whatever you want.zip>, it will automatically bypass that for you.*

(PS. DO NOT choose to have Amazon link your device, in the ordering screen. It will offer this before checkout, and I'm almost positive that if you do this, then they open the package and setup your stick for you, thus almost guaranteed they will install the current updated firmware, which is said to block the pre-loader setup ... you want a virgin Firestick, untouched by their grubby little update installing hands! lol)

true, thats what i was confirming, because several threads in this and the other android development forum had replies from ppl who claimed that the currently sold Firestick 4k was being shipped with a version of FireOS that was not exploitable via the Kamakiri method... basically claiming that the 2018 firestick 4k (as marketed by Amazon) and the CURRENT released 4k are somehow different, which in fact they are absolutely NOT. Theres not a single difference in the board layout or chipset.
Then theres ppl claiming that the updated builds after 6.2.8.1 have patched the access to the pre-loader. Well even if that was true, there would have to be some form of hardware modification that would have had to take place, or at the bare minimum Amazon would have had to trigger an E-fuse to be blown during your initial setup, that would make it unable to downgrade via the short method. BUT they did do exactly that with the Firestick 2nd Gens, that were re-released as some other model, i forget. But i know for a fact that this did happen because i have 3 of those which do not recognize the short, and will not advance past the very 1st file when connected using the NO SHORT method. They freeze immediately and lock up the process. So i was simply doing both a CONFIRMATION to those who stated that there were no UNLOCKABLE versions being sold by Amazon right now, because that is an outright lie... The ONLY firestick 4k being sold by Amazon IS the Unlockable version.... AFAIK the only BLOCKED version being sold is the 4k Max... There is not a "NOT UNLOCKABLE" Firestick 4k being sold anywhere. BUT i also was warning everyone that if you DO purchase a new 4k with the intent of unlocking it, that they need to be aware that Amazon is sneaking an option into the order where you can just check YES and it will come pre-connected to your prime account.
(Some lesser knowing individual might see this as a GOOD OPTION, because they think they wont have to worry about connecting it to the internet to set it up, and risk updating the firmware... but this is EXACTLY Amazon's intent; They WANT ppl to have them link the device before they ship it because that insures that the newest FW is installed onto it, before it leaves the warehouse, thus rendering any mitigations useless if indeed they have patched out the pre-loader exploit!)
I have a few friends in the Software dev team in Cali, and they have told me it is COMPLETELY an ongoing process to disable or nullify all possible methods to Unlock/Alter the bootloader of some current, and ALL future FireOS devices, because they have gotten some pretty nasty legal issues directed at them for allowing system mods that are enabling these 3rd party apps which provide access to Unreleased and In theatre Movies, as well as FREE access to many of the paid streaming platforms! Paramount, Peacock, Hulu, and HBO to name a few have all blamed Amazon for not doing something to prevent the installation of these apps and services which are cutting into their profit margin. Mainly because companies like ROKU disabled all access to their Custom channel lineup, and the ability to use secret codes to install 3rd party apps, on ALL their devices, new and old!.
So just was warning any "Novelty" unlockers, that they need to make sure to not allow Amazon to pre-configure their devices. Hell several features have been removed already in just a few builds... namely the Permissions manager. I hsve one 4k stick here now that is UNLOCKED but the owner has installed several OTA updates to keep it current, and there is literally NO PERMISSIONS manager AT ALL, so several 3rd party apps wont even load. It also has no way to install the Settings V2, so theres, 1. No permission mgr, AND 2. No Accessibility options to grant access for some apps which request it.

Just as a FYI, I also unlocked my new sheldonp (I ordered it on Prime Day) without any problem. Just make sure to run the unlock exploit before powering on the device.

Hmm let me get straight. Tomorrow I will get my 4k (non max) and I'm from Europe. Can't I power it on to see the firmware version? I bought it to escape from sony tv bloatware. Can't be still in the matrix please I'm looking into removing bloatware, root or no root as required to get the job done. I will use it only with kodi for local content. That's it.

I've got mine from Blackfriday sales in Europe. Germany to be exact.
Never turned it on once. Did not connect to internet.
I always get "RuntimeError: ERROR: Serial protocol mismatch, expected 0000 got 2001"
on executing bootrom-step.sh
Boot-Fastboot.sh ran just fine saying "preloader ready, sending FACTACT"
I'm not sure if that means patched.

yes i can also confirm. i bought one a month ago and unlocked it out of the box no prob. I got excited so ordered a second and that one (same process) is giving me the 0000 got 2001 error also.

IMHO, these Amazon claims do not hold water. I can buy a Dell computer that can do all those "nasty" things with apps, and Dell will not get into legal issues.

As soon as you connect to WiFi during setup you will see checking for updates. Hold 'back'+'menu' on the remote for 5sec as soon as you see this screen. It will open an accessibility screen, just tap 'back' on the remote, and the update step is skipped.
You can either throttle your internet connection to give you more time on the checking for updates screen, or just unplug your router when you see that screen.

Alternatively, when you are setting up WiFi (entering your password), tap on Advanced on the onscreen keyboard, enter Ighor's DNS address for DNS1 + DNS2, and the stick will be blocked from downloading updates right away. Then use back+menu to skip the check for updates screen.

Is "Ighors DNS address for DNS1 + DNS2" the exact command, or should I put in the actual IPs for the DNS servers? If I am to enter IPs is the + necessary?

Yes Ighor, not ignore . Click on that link, and it has step by step information how how to fill out the advanced WiFi settings.
When you get to the option to enter the DNS, you need to enter the DNS IP address corresponding to one of Ighor's DNS servers (choose the one that corresponds to your geographical region).
Ighor's DNS servers block the addresses that serve Amazon's OTA updates. By using them in your advanced WiFi settings, you are blocking your FireTV from connecting to them.

Wi-Fi Issues

Can anybody else connect to a WPA2 Enterprise Wi-Fi network? I get "Authentication error" every time despite using the correct settings for the networks. I'm waiting for my current month to get closer to ending before activating my Crystal (don't want to throw away too much $$$), but I doubt it is a factor.
My college uses WPA2 Enterprise for all Wi-Fi networks except for the Open network (and it's a little obvious why Open isn't a good thing...).
I even went to my school's IT department to see if there was anything they could do and weren't able to do anything. They double-checked the settings and used other profiles, and still weren't able to connect.
They say it's a firmware issue since it will connect to the Open network, and I believe them. My current phone is the LG Optimus F3 on Virgin, and it'll successfully connect to the same networks the Crystal won't on the stock firmware (ZV5), but when I update to either the ZV6 or ZV7 firmware I get the same issue: an authentication error.

I too am having this issue, whenever trying to connect to the secure university website... I cannot access data and have no signal anywhere, any patches?
I contacted Sharp about it on Friday and got a call back today. The guy called right as I was about to be occupied for the next few hours, so I couldn't troubleshoot and rescheduled for tomorrow.
If it is able to be corrected, I will post the steps to do so.

It might be a certificate issue since my college specifically tells us (students) to uncheck "validate certificates" in the connection wizard when initially trying to connect to the network(s) on our laptops. The IT guy I worked with has a Galaxy S4 or 5, not sure which, with 4.4.2 and he is able to connect to the same networks I cannot.
It might be different for yours...
I spoke to the Sharp rep today and the case has been escalated since it is the "first ticket" about this issue.
He tried to walk me through manually adding the wireless network, by the + on the Wi-Fi settings page, and am still not able to connect.
Choosing either the WEP or the WPA/WPA2 PSK Security option removes the ability to add an identity to tell the network who I am, while 802.1x EAP has such option.
I think that is the issue.
I believe I was told that I would get more calls from Sharp about this; and I was given a case number and a direct callback number if I needed to call them (no, I won't share).
I too am having this issue and am keen on what Sharp has to say about it. While you have them on the phone do you mind asking them about whether or not we have a chance of seeing Lollipop on this device?

Sure. It appears to be something Sharp would have to push an update for from what I gather with my limited technical Android knowledge and I see no harm in asking. But I make no promises of an answer.

Yeah I assume it'd have to be an OTA update etc etc I'm just hoping it's in their pipeline. I love this phone but I'm running Lollipop on my Nexus 7 and the lil Crystal is getting jealous...

It shouldn't be too had for Sharp to get Lollipop to work since KitKat is already very stock. Plus, if Sharp is truly wanting to get back in the smartphone game in the States, they'll probably fix problems with something as important as Wi-Fi and want the latest and greatest version of Android on their current U.S. flagship to make a, material , statement to users .

It's an 844 number. It's listed in the back of the white booklet that came with your crystal. I've called and documented several issues and have a case #. This WiFi issue being one of them.
How many Boost or Virgin phones aside from the Moto G have gotten any update attention at all?

Called Sharp just now and I am told that a Manager of some sorts is looking at my case and looking for a fix for "[my] particular phone." From the rep.'s recap of the notes the previous rep. left, it appears that the issue with connecting to an Enterprise network was lost in the English-to-English translation and I am apparently having issues connecting to Wi-Fi in general. Trying to clarify that the issue is only with an Enterprise security connection made no effect.
I am curious as to what that Manager or whomever calls will say in the one to two business days I was told I would receive a call-back.
I would not be surprised if there is no official fix...

They pay better attention to you if you hit them up on Facebook. I expect a call tomorrow. Among my issues/questions was an update to Lollipop. So I'll keep everyone posted.

They called less than an hour ago while I was in class. Like I expected, they assumed I am unable to connect to any Wi-Fi and had to clear that up. Now I'm told I'll get another call in another business day or two.
Forgot about asking about Lollipop. Having more people ask about it should get them in gear to bring it to the Crystal since that shows demand.

Got a call back from Sharp and they ended up issuing an RMA.
It took 2 business days to get back to me to only have me try to reconnect with a slightly different security option and decide this is an issue that currently can't be fixed...
I already tried what they asked me to do and had the same error I've always had in doing so. Jeez...
Now I'm curious as to what they're going to do with my phone, or if they will fix it somehow.
I got a new phone from Sharp today and still have the same issue. There goes their "it's a hardware" problem.
I did ask about plans for a Lollipop upgrade in the future and got a stern "No." and that was it.

We came across an individual with the same device, and they entered a "Connecting...Saved" cycle. It took a couple of days, but we got the device connected to our campus network (Today Actually). We had to manually import the certificate, and select it during the wireless profile configuration. Normally this isn't necessary, and it was only necessary on Nokia Symbian phones and some BlackBerries. Does your university provide a method of manually downloading the wireless certificates - specifically an option for mobile devices (Android/BlackBerry/etc)?

I just sent it out again to Sharp yesterday, so when I get it back I will ask my IT department if they will be able to do so.
I don't remember the reason why, but those who attend the same school as I have to manually configure the connection on a computer so certificates are not validated because the school servers don't send out many certificates.
I thought that might be the issue in the first place, but wasn't sure and thought to follow "proper procedures" to find a solution. Also not being able to enter a domain/ID while manually configuring a WPA/WPA2 PSK network on Android seems like a big oversight. I don't know if that's usual for that network but that possibly could have done the trick if it were an option.

Following "Proper Procedures" is the best place to start . I suspect the problem may be one of two things:
The certificate that your university utilizes is missing from the "Trusted Certificates" on your device
The certificate IS present in your "Trusted Certificates", but the Crystal Sharp's wpa_supplicant [apologize if wrong terminology] is not utilizing it for your Wi-Fi Profile.

Your IT Department should be able to check which certificates are installed by going to "Settings -> Security -> Credential Storage -> Trusted Credentials". The option to install certificates will be down below. If you're able to manually install the right certificate and configure the wireless profile, you may see "Network may be monitored" - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537794 Depending on what the certificate issue is, this may be something that can be permanently fixed by an update. *Note - the certificate we use is normally in the "Trusted Certificates" for Android devices, however, I'm unsure if it was present or not on our user's phone*

Hey CBJohns,
I've been working with TriTanium to resolve this issue from our end. Now, I'm *incredibly* rusty with certs and my knowledge when I knew about them was limited at best. Is there any way you would be willing to go over the process you went through? We don't currently have a method of downloading the cert that I know of, and all I have at this time is the .cer file. I don't have a signed key or anything like that which makes it difficult to create a .pfx.
We are using GoDaddy certs here on campus though, which leads me to questions why it doesn't work for this specific model of phone. I don't deal with cert signing or anything like that for us though, I'm Tier II Helpdesk support for all intents and purposes.

Why Is Netflix Refusing To Work on My TN7?

I am running Netflix version 3.9.1 build 4105 and Android 4.4.2.
When I open Netflix the program just sits and spins and spins then gives me a "Sorry we could not reach Netflix Service. Please try again later (-9)". Then I clear app data and after I do that and relaunch then I get the extremely common 15001 error (that is impossible to actually troubleshoot..).
I have read multiple people having issues with Netflix, but that was when they released a patch that broke it and I am pretty sure that isn't a common problem anymore. I have one of the apps that show network activity and all I get is random hits of like 20-30 KB/s max while trying to launch Netflix. I have tried this on two completely different networks, so I don't think it has anything to do with my network.
My device is rooted with TWRP installed, but I don't see how this could have any affect on Netflix (it never did on my old rooted Nexus 7 running Cyanogen Mod).
Is there something I can try that maybe I haven't heard yet? I even tried clearing the Google Services Framework cache/data (as this helped people in the past) and that changed nothing above. Not being able to use Netflix is a huge problem for me and I am hoping someone has run into this on our devices. I imagine Netflix is one of the most common Apps used.
Thanks for any help or ideas anyone can provide. If I need to I'll restore the tablet with Fastboot, but there is no guarantee that will work and an obvious pain if it doesn't.

I have the exact same problem! No matter what it's the same error, restoring the tablet doesn't work either.

I don't think anyone has problems these days ripping off movies, however streaming thousands of movies and TV shows is more convenient by a mile (especially on a tablet).
That is indeed one reason Google & apple push to get rid of the power of personal storage and force the cloud.
When Netflix won't work when you finally settle for a movie, it's nice to have options.
The measly amount Netflix charges is worth it, they have a good service....
But as you know, traveling you are forced to use sporadic data on the road that cost. Until they fix that, I want my storage.
Thank you for starting this thread driving me nuts today! Thought I was alone. It's my son's tablet and Netflix is one of his major uses for it. Tried so many fixes and none are working. Guess we'll keep an eye out for an update.
Also, anyone have trouble with Netflix in general? I had to install an xposed mod just to get it to run!?!

How do you turn off auto updates for a single program? I know how to turn it off completely, but is there a way to do it just for Netflix? It's not like we can deny it network connection..

I can also confirm that Netflix 3.2.0 build 1340 does work.

Go to Netflix in the play store then hit the three buttons in the top right and the option to disable auto updates should be there.
Never got around to testing other builds as that on works fine for my kid.
I believe the reason behind new versions beyond 3.7.1 not working is because of below;
"As of version 3.7.2, Netflix has begun using Forced Google DNS lookup for their Android app. This means that the Netflix app bypasses any DNS servers you setup on the Android device or on the router and uses Google DNS instead.
Traditionally we were able to block Google DNS lookups on the router and force Netflix to use alternative DNS. However, the Android app seems to not work at all if Google DNS is blocked."
In any case I can confirm that version 3.7.1 build 1711 does work as it should.
Also as recommended earlier you have to stop the app prom auto updating.

Shield + VPN

I sideloaded IPVanish on my Shield device and all was working well. However, I later had to do a hard reset. After setting everything up again, I now have a problem where although I connect to a vpn server I have no internet access. All is back to normall when I disconnect from the vpn server. Tried YouTube, Play Store, Kodi (which doesn't even load past the initial gray screen before showing the Kodi Krypton splash). None work!
When I connect to a server initially, my IP address stays the same until I change to a different menu, then it does reflect the new IP corresponding to the server. It does show that data is being uploaded and downloaded, but it's minimal kb.
I have tried multiple different versions of the APK but have found none of them work anymore. I have done and tried the exact methods I have seen online and on numerous YouTube videos, but clearly something is wrong with my settings that I can't seem to find.
Anyone have any ideas or previous experience? Thanks!
**Sidenote - I've also noticed that when I sideload any apps now through ES File Explorer the initial screen that loads up shows the app icon, the install/cancel buttons, but no details in the middle....
Does this Provider impose limits on how many installs you can have running? Perhaps you need to log into your Account, and see about removing such Ghost Devices that are eating into that limit..
It's a problem I have recently ran into with KeepSafe's VPN Unlimited. Alas they will only allow you to remove only the One Device per Week though.

Thanks for the reply! That's a great idea and I thought something similar. I went to IPVanish website a few days ago when this first happened, but there's nothing about the devices I use. Good news is that while it's one of the highest rated providers there's no number to call and it's been 4 days without a response to my first inquiry to them. So frustrating! Maybe on their end it has something like that and they clear out every few days hopefully if this is the case.

***UPDATE***
Well, it's ridiculously quirky but I figured out how to get it to work! I have to pick a specific server, then leave the app, then go back to it and it finally changes IP address and gives me internet!
My only persistent problem now is Kodi, which loads properly with no VPN connected but gives me a gray screen otherwise. UGH!
Not sure what the problem is. But for the nSATV I would recommend KeepSafes' (VPN Unlimited), which is only 26€'s for a whole Year, or about 100€ (or so), for a lifetime. And unlike your solution... It hasn't really ever screwed with my Systems nearly as much as whatever your running has. Such issues, that I do have with it are with both Amazon, and Netflix, which don't overly care for an active VPN much.
I'm not here to drive up sales for KeepSafe. (Perhaps your Provider offers a better service. Which they should seeing as they cost over 3x as much! Over a year.), It's just the first Provider I came across in the PlayStore, and FWIW have been nothing but, happy with them.

Here how it's done:
Reached Local OP Store -> Asked about the latest DRM update -> The guy in the counter had no idea what I was talking about
He spoke to the technician inside -> Asked me to fill a form -> Took the phone
Update is done in five mins -> Back Home
I was on OOS 5.0.3 (Oreo 8 Official Stock) , Rooted
None of the files were deleted. Root was intact. Bootloader remained unlocked.
HD Netflix YAY! (Although I don't see much on my phone)
Now we just need a way to replicate the procedure without sending our phones in for a week...I'm pretty sure someone here can work it out...

The reason that OnePlus requires you to send in your OnePlus 5 or 5T is because of the way Widevine Level 1 works.
According to the documentation:
The Widevine keybox must be encrypted with a device-unique secret key that is not visible to software or probing methods outside of the TrustZone. The Widevine key-box must be installed in the factory or delivered to the device using an approved secure delivery mechanism.

Ya most people cant live without a cell phone for a week especially if you use it for work or the gps all the time they expect us especially in america i just got mine last 2 weeks if i waited longer i would still probably have to send it in wait 2 more weeks and not be able to do my job properly because i would not have a phone. they need to be able to add it id pay extra for remote session just to get it added too.
this almost makes me want to return it and get new phone its crazy if they have more problems like this. i still have 2 days left to send back on 14 day rma trial or whatever i love it but cant wait and i use my phone for all my media as well

Can you check how big a download in the Netflix app is? Make sure that you enable the high resolution in the settings of the app. Please tell what you downloaded and how big the download was. Then we can compare it to our devices.
It could be that you don't see a difference because even though you now have widevine level 1 Netflix won't let you stream in full HD because you are rooted / unlocked bootloader.

The device does not need to be disassembled, it is a software modification. According to Google this has to be done in a secure environment on a per device basis. The technician connects the phone to his 'secure' PC and simply changes the widewine level to 1. OTG as per Google is not a secure mode.

Once widewine level changed, no need to download a different Netflix version, the existing app will simply read the level on startup and (if HD is subscribed) will enable HD streaming.
Other devices have widevine level 1 enabled by default but can only display 720p because Netflix must allow every single device for 1080p. You can find a list of these devices on the Netflix website. Some others claim that Netflix detects root or unlocked bootloader and even though their device could show 1080p, with root or unlocked bootloader Netflix limits it to 720p.
So in my opinion you are probably watching 720p without noticing it. Many people didn't even noticed that Netflix only shows 480p on the oneplus5 and thought this is full HD.
So we can verify it by checking the download size of a film.
Could you please do it? You only need to start the download. Then it will show the size and you can cancel it. It will take you only half a minute of your time.
Make sure, that you enable the high definition downloads in the settings menu.

I got widevine updated from local OP exclusive service centre in Kormangala Bangalore. It took around 15-30 minutes and there was no data loss.

I went to one of the authorised centre and asked them to flash widevine drm patch, they all looked at each other and then at me. I didn't even wait for their response and left the shop.

Gaining administrator access on my computer

Greetings. My computer was purchased and set up by my father, and he set up his own account as an administrator and mine as a normal user. Many of the drivers for software I needed started breaking awhile ago or outdated ones (such as the Nvidia graphics drivers) need updates. I've asked him numerous times to update the drivers and such or reinstall/ or install but he insists that it isn't necessary. I've had it with not being able to do certain things on my PC. I've asked him to give me administrative access on the computer but he wouldn't allow it. Does anyone know how I could go about doing this if it's even possible?

This is almost the EXACT situation that led me to learning to bypass & crack his password (back on Windows 2000!) which then led me to becoming self-taught in Windows and troubleshooting which then led me to building PCs & hardware which, in the end (finding I had an interest and affinity to it), led me to becoming a computer technician! It's nostalgic to see history repeating itself in another way 2 decades later...
So I can definitely sympathize and can't help but reach out, even if this thread might have expired (it's been 11 days) and/or the (new) OP won't check on this anymore...
"Cracking" your dad's password seems to still use the same general steps, but since it's been crazy long since Windows XP and the software I used isn't active or applicable any longer, I couldn't walk you through it here...
The best idea I have for your situation is to get an elevated (meaning w/ administrative privileges) command prompt and either use that to change your account type to one in the "Administrator" group or even activating the ever so elusive Administrator account; so you could login to that one and/or give your own account the privileges.
