A new journey: The OPPO Product Ambassadors, Step 1 - OPPO Find X5 Pro General

Hello All,
Long time no see XDA.
I might need to introduce myself… Mikael, Mike for short, and a French Guy lost in the US now, particularly in Chicago, and obviously, my profile needed an update too (you will see what kind of products I usually use, and you will have a link to my other social networks too). And yes, more than 20 years in tech for my work or pleasure.
So why post now? I am a silent member here, as many of us. Let me explain.
The Beginning:

Well, well, well, I was fooling around my Twitter when I saw a tweet from OPPO explaining they were opening their first OPPO Product Ambassador Program cc @OPPO Ambassador Team
As a tech enthusiast, and let's be honest, I never had an OPPO in my life (I am speaking about their smartphone. I know OPPO essentially for their home cinema product, decades ago, in Europe), so I decided to apply for it.
I wasn't expecting much about it; usually, Big Brands select Youtubers, Bloggers, Big influential or content creators, so you can imagine my surprise when I received an email letting me know I was selected and if I was still interested.
Obviously yes. It would have been foolish to say No. I've seen much material about this new Find X5 Series, and I won't turn down the opportunity to put my hand on one of them.
As usual, I was interested in Pro Variant, totally forgetting a standard X5, and Lite were also available.
Everyone here wants the latest technology available, the newest SoC platform, and premium products. Benchmark it, torture it, make it a daily companion, shoot and record with it, push it to the extreme because you got in your hands more money you usually spent for your smartphone.
And there is only one honest question here: Is it worth it?
I won't answer this question as I will receive the standard Find X5 and not the Pro variant.
So, what is happening now?
No 8 Gen 1 variant for me but, instead, the SD 888 platform. Don't get me wrong; I'm still thrilled to get my hand on it. As I said, I never had an OPPO Smartphone, I don't know their UI as OPPO is not available here. So, it will be a first. I am more used to AOSP, Pixel, or "clean" OS. I got my hand for a long time with MIUI as well as Oxygen OS. Both got their perks but also their cons.
As I have an Instagram account, I am curious about their partnership with Hasselblad and the integration of their MariSilicon X, their new Imaging NPU.
There are a few differences between X5 and Pro variants, and sure I would prefer having an f/1.7 aperture instead of f/1.8 and only get two-axis optical stabilization instead of the five. It seems I will still need my tripod with me while I will shoot around Chicago and face its wind (and believe me, Windy City is no joke).
Expectations:
So far, I don't have it in my hand yet, on the product. I don't know what to expect. I don't know about their camera app, how the UI is running, and what functionalities, features, or customization OPPO added to their Android Firmware.
If I follow the specs, the X5 got a 4K Ultra Night Video mode thanks to their MariSilicon X, a Moon shot functionality (Authentic Moon).
The color profile should be accurate with their Hasselblad partnership. Ultra HD is also present (even if I don't know what it really means, HDR is HDR, except HDR10/+, Dolby Vision, HLG or even PQ, other names are usually just branding and marketed names).
It is the same for the screen as it is an AMOLED 10 Bits LTPS panel.
But is it a real 10 Bits, an 8+2 Bits? What about LPTO, refresh rate? I don't know, but sure I will ask the question.
Everybody can imagine that using your phone all day, shooting, recording, streaming is battery-consuming.
Will it support an extensive day of work? Sure, I will test it. Find X5 has a Dual Cell 80W SUPERVOOC with bla bla bla bla whatever the name for rest or previous charging technology name. I'm more concerned if it will be compatible with my own PD3.0 charger I got or if their charger will be compatible with my PD.3.0 products. One ring to rule them all, in that case, one charger. The device should be compatible with 30W AIRVOOC; that's a good point. I hope it will work with the 50W wireless charger I used on my desk.
I looked at the cellular part, and it seems this product is compatible with a US network like T-Mobile. However, VoLTE, VoWiFi, RCS, CA are also important. I will cross my finger on that part.
Next? Sharing with the Community:
As I said, I don't have the product yet.
I think the best will be to share the unboxing when I receive it, and you might hear my strong French accent and make fun of it.
I love unboxing as it is your first contact with a brand and the product. Will the charger be part of the box? Accessories? Case included? Earphones? Any surprises as we are part of the OPPO Ambassador Program?
After that, testing, as you can imagine. It will take some time for that. I don't want to rush it. For instance, there is no point in reviewing a product after 2 days of use. So far, I don't know if I will go for a video review or a writing one. But for sure, I will post on Twitter or Instagram pictures I will capture with it and see if the Find X5 is really gifted for night shots. The competition is here, especially with Google and their Pixel series, and adding an NPU to help SD888 can make sense, but NPU needs to be fueled. This chip is new, and I'm so sure it will be functioning at 100% for its debut.
We should have access to Product Managers or people inside from OPPO, a great way to share ideas, inputs, things that bother me, or the opposite, things I like. So If we can share some aspirational ideas or even pass them to the OPPO team, it could be a win-win for everyone, and I believe this is the primary goal of this program.
Exchanging with the Community:
Meaning if you have ideas for testing, questions, and situations you want to see the smartphone operate (like shooting in these conditions, sound quality, ColorOS functionality) or whatever, feel free to ask. And you can ask them in English, but also in French as OPPO is present in France; it would be a pleasure to answer you the best way I can.
Don't forget to subscribe to the thread if you want to receive notifications.
I will conclude by thanking the team at OPPO behind this project and giving me this opportunity. We are only 20 ambassadors so far across the world, and it should be interesting to read how things can be different and expectations from other cultures or countries.

Martian Smartwatches

Finally! A smartwatch that's simple, good-looking and affordable. I'm talking about the Martian Notifier.
My concern however, is that it's affordable. I don't need my watch to make my phones calls, or run my GPS, or be it's own smartphone. I simply want one that can tell me, hey, you have a text or a phone call. And the analog face will be awesome, since I prefer analog faces to digital.
My point is, I have never heard of Martian as watch makers, and am simply wondering if anyone has any experience with them, and how well they're built, and how well they work. Does the watch tend to lag behind like most cheap watches? Does the acrylic/glass face scratch easy, or crack easy? Basic watch concerns.
Any feedback is appreciated The watch doesn't release until this Summer, so I know we don't have opinions on the notifier itself, I just don't know Martian's reputation.
i really like the design of the Notifier and that clock runs on a seperate battery
i guess the battery life on the 'smart' part of it will also be pretty good, as it only has a small oled display
i do wonder if the oled screen isn't TOO small

Martian isn't totally new, this will be their fourth watch, so i guess some people should have experience with the brand
(but they might not be on XDA, i don't expect a lot of development is being done for these watches)
according to smartwatchfans it will cost $129, so that's not too bad
you'll have to be patient though, it won't be release until summer this year
Wow... this really blows my mind.
Can i get payed to post adds too? Cause the whole way you wrote that says PR.
nope, just being informative, i wouldn't write i'm worried about the size of the display if i was really doing PR for them
i AM interested in this watch tho, so i posted what i knew, with a picture because the TS didn't post one
getting paid for posting ads, if you find out how, please let me know
edit:
@ryno9100: here's first look kinda review of the passport (an older watch by Martian) by cnet, the notifier does not have the microphone/speaker
they're not too positive because it's not "that smart", but i guess that's for you to decide
$125 is temptingly cheap but im afraid like everything in life, you get what you pay for...
Having purchased a bunch of these smart watches as they have evolved, my advise would spend the extra $60-$75 bucks and get a more feature rich device. Something that is more customizable or one that can run apps. with android or Tizen. $179-199 seems to be the sweet spot for smart watches. Even if you dont use all the features, it will guarantee a following of support, which after all, is the reason we are all on here to being with.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
Let's be honest. I don't need a watch that can double as my phone. I have my phone for that, and the arguement that "It's a pain in the butt to pull your phone out" is, to me, the epitome of lazy. I'd rather talk on my phone than on my watch.
@ronfurro
I simply want a watch that looks good, and let's me know, "Oh, hey. Don't forget. You have a text or a call!" I have a tendency to forget my phone on the other side of the room on silent. It would also allow me to check while at work. That's all I need. If I want music, make a call, or text someone, I'll just pull out my phone. Lol
Even as a tech guy, I'm not buying in to the smartwatch craze.
Edit:
@JarlSX Thanks for the information! I'd done a little research on their past devices, but coulnd't find much on build quality. I don't like their old ones cause they're all square, and honestly quite pricey. But for 120 bucks, if the build quality is decent, I am more than happy to get a Notifier. That's my main concern. Under someone like me (who wears out shoes in 6 months or less, and pretty much just over uses things) will it break within like a year and make me regret purchasing it.
i currently have the same ideas about smartwatches, i use my Smartwatch 2 for notifications exclusively right now, there are no apps right now i find useful
i don't even use a music remote, but that's because i have a Sony HBH-DS970 bluetooth headset, that has controls for volume/track/play/pause, don't even have to look at it to use it
i am looking forward to an update of the whatsapp extension i'm using though, the developer says he's working on showing pictures on the watch that are being sent through whatsapp, current extensions only show "[image]" or something similar
that is something the Notifier will never be able to do of course
i don't want to play games, surf the web or stuff like that, why would i if i have a smartphone with a 5 inch screen that's much more suitable for those tasks
i AM a gadget freak though and i will be following the development of Android Wear closely, even if i have no idea what functionality that will bring that i find useful
there's one thing i don't get about the Notifier, it was shown in january at CES, how come they need almost half a year to release it?
What they showed at CES, from my understanding, were working proto-types. They still had a small amount of development to do, and then production. And they'll usually run a batch in production, make sure the quality is good, then start running mass production.
Then we have to account time for them to travel to stores/warehouses. Junk takes time.
And then there's the fact that it's summer time, when people are more willing to spend money on things. Summer and Christmas.

Thank You for giving back to the community in this manner. This is a fun way to network. yes, me too, having X3 and want to experience X5. I heard that there are quite many new features, especially the photography. Self-developed NPU seems not bad.

Part 4: Best ColorOS Features and Battery Review (OPPO Find X5 Product Review from the Land Down Under)

For the past couple of weeks, my SIM Card has been inserted into a new OPPO Find X5 (Black, 256GB on-board storage, 8GB RAM, and Model CPH2037), which I received from OPPO (thank you for the OPPOrtunity!), as one of their 20 global OPPO Product Ambassadors. It has become my daily driver, and replaces my previous OPPO Find X3 Pro. The following are my views and opinion only.
In real life, I enjoy Smart Phone technology, and manage all of my online presence (including my twitter (more than 181,000 tweets so far), Instagram and LinkedIn accounts), directly from my Smart Phone.
I’ve broken down my OPPO Find X5 Product Review into shorter sections, which makes it either easier to read everything, or perhaps you may just jump to the topics that are important to you:
Summary
Build Quality and Design, and Overall Performance
Camera Performance and Other Performance Features
Best ColorOS Features and Battery Review (you are here)
Conclusion
Best ColorOS Features:
The OPPO Find X5 could be the most amazing phone, but it’s nothing but a paperweight without the OS (Operating System). ColorOS 12.1 is Android the OPPO way, and at first glance, presents a clean and clear straight forward OS, very similar to the vanilla Android 12 (ala Pixel 6 Pro), but with noticeable extras.
ColorOS brings some tricks and extra apps to differentiate itself above and beyond Android 12. Some of the promoted ColorOS apps, such as Omoji and O-Relax are not available in my region, but for me the following ColorOS extras and settings are must haves and I missed these when I went from the Find X3 Pro to the Pixel 6 Pro briefly:
Special features: this group of settings is all aimed at productivity and fine-tuning the user’s experiences, and includes Flexible Windows, Quick launch, Smart Sidebar (see below) and Simple mode.
Smart Sidebar: gives you extremely quick access, via a retracted sidebar, to extremely productive ColorOs system tools like Screenshot, Screen recording, Screen translate and Recorder. You have the ability to add other apps to the Smart Sidebar’s menu. Depending on which apps you include, these can be pulled out quickly from the Smart Sidebar, to create floating windows, allowing you to multitask across multiple apps, all from one screen. I am truly hooked on this productivity tool … do yourself a favour, and if nothing else, try it out.
Personalisations: this setting allows you a much deeper customisation of Wallpapers, Always-On Display, Icons, Quick Settings, Colours, Font & display size, Fingerprint animation, and Edge lighting. Smart phone users generally align to one of two trains of thought …those who love to customise the look of your phone, and those who are content with out of the box, and for those who prefer the former, this is a very happy place to be.
Digital Wellbeing and parental controls: in a world that is highly connected and everything is in real time, this ColorOS feature assists with working out and implementing changes to regain control of your online activities …. please don’t judge me on my Instagram and eBay usage (I was researching something special for a family member … honest!)

Battery Review:
Having used Mobile Phones from the mid 1980’s, I think I may suffer battery anxiety, and up until the Find X5, have carried a Portable Powerbrick with me. With a 4,800mAh Battery, not set to High Performance Mode, but with the screen refresh set to 120Hz, I can get through a day of usage (videos, posting and commenting on social media, music, instant messaging and emails) … and still have around 33% battery left. But I am comforted by the inclusion of the 80W SUPERVOOC wall-charger, with my Find X5 back to fully charged in approximately 46 minutes. It is important to note that my Wall Charger is not the Australian version and I am using a travel adaptor, which may have an impact on performance, but it's still very quick.
The Find X5 also plays well with other non-proprietary wall-chargers. This is the exact opposite experience I faced with the Pixel 6 Pro, with charging which felt like watching paint dry, and would only play nicely with certain chargers (not that a proprietary wall charger was actually supplied).
For those who are interested, there is also up to 30W wireless charging available (wireless charger performance dependant).
Perhaps no more battery anxiety for me.
Thank you for taking the time to read my Real Life Product Review of the OPPO Find X5. I welcome any questions you may have (noting I'm not an experience Tech Reviewer), and if I cannot answer them, I will seek the answer from either another OPPO Product Ambassador, or from the OPPO Team.

Camera Performance:
The true aim for the MariSilicon X NPU is to fundamentally improve Camera performance, and this is the main area of the Find X5 that I am genuinely excited about. Better night time and low light performance around videography and photography, with quicker overall processing, are two outcomes directly attributed to the MariSilicon X NPU.

While we are on the subject of the Camera Array, it would be remiss of me not to mention the Hasselblad partnership with OPPO in the Find X5 Series. It certainly cannot hurt to have one of the World’s iconic Camera Brands co-develop the provisioning of Natural Colour Calibration and Hasselblad Filters; in their words “when classic meets the future”.
We all know how important good filters are in the social media arena … its critical to make your photos and videos “pop” so that they stand out on social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter.
As a photographer of food, flowers, and landscapes, I really am impressed as to how quickly the camera array switches to Macro and back, each and every time, and solidly.
No camera array in any Smart Phone on the market is perfect, and all camera arrays are compromised in their attempt to cover as many situations as possible. The Find X5’s cameras deliver really solid natural results, both in full and low light (even night) and all via the very user friendly Camera App’s UI. You can delve deeper into the Camera App and go full-on Pro Mode, bringing out the professional photographer in you, or if you’re like me, switch on the AI and let the Camera’s AI do its thing.
The 3 camera array at the rear consists of a 50 MP wide-angle and 50 MP uItra-wide-angle and 13 MP telephoto (2 X Optical Zoom) cameras, and is partnered by the 32 MP front facing camera. No microscope camera from the Find X3 Pro.
As someone summarised my Instagram posts as “the phone stays with you for every breakfast, and witnesses your morning moments and captures the vivid colours of the food and coffee” (thanks
Other Performance Features:
Bluetooth is memorable by its fast and hard connectivity, and the Find X5 is a solid jump ahead of the Find X3 Pro, which sometimes did not play well with my car’s Android Auto, or my collection of 15 Smartwatches and 4 Bluetooth earphones. Why this is, for me is a mystery, as both use Bluetooth 5.2. Set and forget!
Listening to music or videos without Bluetooth earphones is not something I do, but I spent the afternoon playing my music through the dual speakers of the Find X5 (one upward and the other downward) and there is plenty of sound which didn’t sound out of place, but back to the Bluetooth earphones I go.
While I normally use Bluetooth earphones for calls, I spent the weekend making and receiving calls without, and call clarity seems to be excellent, with no one asking me to repeat myself, and I don’t need to ask them either, but back to Bluetooth earphones I go again.
WiFi connects quickly and has been found to be very responsive and seems to hold its connection even as you drive up the street!
The USB-C charging port is also USB 3.1 and supports OTG (on the go) and you have a USB-C to USB-A adaptor to take advantage of higher transfer speeds. You never know when you need that saved file.

OPPO Find X5, Step 3: Let's move to the review Part 1

Hello everyone,
If you follow me, you have already read this post here.
For those not, here is a little sum up.
I am one of the lucky ones to get my hand on an OPPO Find X5, thanks to OPPO and its OPPO Products Ambassadors program.
And it's the first time for me as I have never had any OPPO before. So first, no expectations, no biases; I will give a chance to the product. ColorOS, UX, build quality, everything will push me to adapt and indeed change the way I use my daily driver smartphone.
I received the black variant in its EU variant while I am in the USA. So, yep, you guess it right, no point for me to test it under USA networks. It will work under AT&T and T-Mobile, not fully compatible with all band frequencies, 5G, or even CA. But it works enough and is compatible with VoWiFi and VoLTE.

It might be a little bit long. Every time I think I will close it, I am adding more stuff
I will try to be simple for this review and give my opinion with no filter.

Let's Go!
Build Quality and Design
One design to rule them all… Find X3, X3 Pro, X5, X5 Pro. Indeed, the design is pretty close between 2021 and 2022 Flagship. Except for an evolution of the photographic block, you can tell it's a Find X.

You can check more photos of the OPPO Find X5 here or here.
The black color is a matte one. It seems not to retain fingerprints, is easy to clean, and the texture feel is excellent.
I'm used to big phones; obviously, this one feels light, small in my hand. It is well balanced, and buttons are easy to access with your fingers, responsive, clicky, and the power button got the OPPO Green color accentuation on its top. Corners are smooth and round, with no sharp angles, and the screen curves are not of the waterfall type, just enough with a bumper case. It might even be less curvy than the P6 Pro. However, I am a fan of flat screens and slim chassis. But I can go with this X5.
When I searched for differences between the X3 and the X5, I saw the bump and how OPPO integrated the photographic block on the X3 series. I will say I prefer the X5 bump, and it's classier. And OPPO also uses it to write down the "Powered by MariSilicon" on the back glass and Hasselblad partnership on the back cover.
The back cover is made with a frosting matte glass, if you ask. The slope is a 75°. OPPO stated it is the optimal curve for "illuminating (sic)" the OPPO Find X5 body in sunlight or shadow. Okay, maybe, I'll use the case you can find in the box anyway.
Performance
Snapdragon 888 baby. An end of 2020 announced flagship SoC made by Qualcomm.
Is it enough for 2022?
Sure, you just need to look around and see how many SD 870 products you have, brand new, in 2022. So, the 888 will give you what you need for daily use.
I'm getting old, so gaming on the phone… Arf, let's face it, I am not a COD, Genshin, whatever game. However, yes, editing videos, making music, this kind of stuff.
The Snapdragon 888 is working well. But if you're a fan of benchmark and think it's the Graal for smartphones, you will be disappointed. I don't know where I'm doing wrong, but I never was able to go over 745K under AnTuTu. I have other SD 888 smartphones that easily break the 820K scoring. And even my P6 Pro does better. And in every benchmark, the X5 is behind.
Obviously, you have different modes for the battery, for performance, and even a gaming control center. Everything was maxed out to get the best results possible.
Any CPU/GPU Governor inside ColorOS to prevent throttling? Allow the phone to run at its best for long session hours? ColorOS need to be finetuned to unleash SD 888 Power or even driver updated?
After more than one year on the market, I expect OEMs to be able to draw the powerful quintessence of this chipset… And so far, I don't think it is the case. There is room for improvement.
For the 6.55" 120Hz panel, I must say it's closed to the 144hz I used on my Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders. I didn't feel any issue with it; it's responsive and no mistouch so far. The screen is a 10bit panel with a JNCD around 0.4 for color accuracy. You can usually tune it in the setting for your own convenience. Personally, I am not too fond of saturated colors, and I need to see precisely the same thing on the screen as I see in real life, especially for taking pictures.
After that, as always, it will depend on 3rd party dev apps to make their apps and games compatible with the 90 or 120fps capability of the X5.
However, the screen is not LPTO but just LPTS/Flexible (Low-Temperature PolySilicon). And yes, AMOLED not LCD.
So, no dynamic refresh rate from 1hz to 120Hz. And no 90Hz option, just 60 or 120Hz. Plus, if you settle your screen this way, I've not found any MEMC enhancement to match 120Hz with 24/25/30/60 or 90 fps to 120Hz refresh rate (and if I check, the Find X2 had one).
If you ask, the touch sampling is only 240Hz, a little bit low as now flagships have 360/480hz on board.
But it's Gorilla Victus for the protection of it.
Brightness is sufficient even for HDR. It's not 1500 nits peak but more around 900/1000 for an expected 500/800 day-to-day (if I compare with the ones I've and marketed for some brightness values)
I will need to go to a second part 2 to continue as XDA only allows 20 attachments.
Part 2
Part 3
Again, thank you OPPO and @OPPO Ambassador Team for this opportunity.
