Where did you download firmware from?
Which did you take (name it)?
Was it multipart or single part ROM?
(probably single as you only named AP slot)
Which Odin version used?

KIES installed or just SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones?

If the device manager said unrecognize usb then try to download the driver from Samsung Open Source. If it isn't working, try another cable (you can borrow it from one of ur friends)

Odin not working.....

So what if Odin doesnt work? what do you do to get your phone back operational? Ive tried 4 different md5 and tar files, the same pit file and still nothing. it fails either at recovey section or in the factoryrs section. is it time to get a new phone?
No, it's time to use a non-stock USB cable (try first, 85% of the time this is the problem) and/or a different USB port or PC.
ive tried 5 cables total. 3 didnt even register with pc something was plugged in. the other 2 work but they both share the same problem.

Sounds like most of them are bad - try a known-good one. Definitely try other USB ports, and then another PC. Also, drivers - reinstall them.
Is your phone sponged (stuck at Samsung) or just need to get back to stock?

So it goes into download mode but Odin doesn't recognize it...and you tried 5 cables and 3 PCs and all of their ports. You have also tried connecting without a battery, connecting to computer with Odin up and boot into download mode. No COM port shows up in Odin and no driver install errors on the computer. Still sounds like a bad cable or bad port on the phone.

NO NO NO. i think you understood me wrong. It goes to download mode and Odin does recognize it. i've tried 5 cables, only 2 of the 5 cables work. ive tried it on 2 pc's (one xp and the other vista) and havetried all the ports on both computers. vista wont see it period. xp sees it but fails during the process. so to my knowledge, ive tried everything.

So you got 1 set of everything that works but it fails in the process. Have you tried another tar? You are using a tar right, if it says md5 at the end, remove that extension. Only autoreboot checked at top, got the tar in the PDA box and the pit in the PIT box?

I didnt think to remove the md5 at the end. could be the problem. ironically, Odin recognizes the file and does a check for it. (im using odin3 v 1.0 and v 1.7). but it halts at the recovery screen. i shall try again tonight without the md5 as that seems to be the only thing i didnt do. everything else you mention has been set. ive tried 3 diff files. one for eco3, one for stock, and another for eb13 (i think). and none of them work.

On my phone or I would dig up the link but they do a good job of explaining how in the thread that...well...tells you how to do it.
Edit... sorry I see you failed mid odin. This happens to me so frequently I don't even know what to say. I would keep trying. I think eventually I would try different files in different odin sections...different odins...all sorts of crap. Persistance was the key

[Q] "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue"...

I had no problem using QBKing77's guide to root my S3. I looked for the comparable thread when I got my S4.
I loaded up Odin but got an error saying there was no PIT partition. I put the phone into debug mode (not in the instructions?) and it seemed to work.
But then it failed half-way through. I was plugged into a USB port on the front of the computer.
Now I get the error "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
I searched and found other threads for the S3 and other phones but would appreciate some help with the S4. Thanks.
Edit: are these the steps I need to take?
Edit #2: Uh, I guess those steps won't work since they will prompt me for a serial number and there doesn't seem to be a way to get that from a Galaxy S4 if it won't boot.

When it boots, it goes straight to the error. If I hold volume down + Home, it *will* go into download mode.
I didn't know what to flash with ODIN.
After the fiasco with the attempted rooting, I didn't want to chance flashing the wrong thing.
Thanks for the reply.
Edit: Can someone post step-by-step directions on how to flash stock firmware through Odin? (Or the link to the thread that probably already exists)
Preferably with a link to the exact ROM/firmware that I need?

I have this file already downloaded: CF-Auto-Root-jfltespr-jfltespr-sphl720
I started Odin 3.07 ("Run as administrator") and loaded the file in the PDA slot. I waited for "<OSM> Leave CS.." to appear in the "Message" box. I hooked up the Galaxy S4 but the COM port will not show up... trying different cables now... (it is plugged into the back of the computer...)

I've had dicey situations using download mode just like you've described on 2 different gs4's. I use heimdall, not odin, but same flakey results. The gs4's download mode appears to be very finicky about the quality of the usb cable and port. I never had any issue with download mode with identical hardware when I used to flash my gs2. So it's not you, it's the gs4. I finally got some reasonably reliable and consistent flashing results by using the usb ports on the back, and a high quality blackberry usb cable. In my case, the "bad" ports on the front are usb1.1, while the ports on the back are usb 2.0. So it seems to matter when flashing the gs4. So I would say avoid using usb 1.1 ports if your computer is old enough to have them.

[Q] ODIN stuck at Initialization step

hi all.. im a beginner at installing custom roms.. i own a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9500.. a few days ago, i updated it to CyanogenMod c-11 (kitkat 4.4.4 based) ROM, then to CyanogenMod c-12 (lollipop based) ROM, so try out its new features.. however, since yesterday, my phone is not booting up.. neither is it able to go into recovery mode.. (the boot logo displays endless).. i can only go into the download mode..
so i downloaded ODIN.. and tried flashing I9500XXUFNI2_I9500ODDFNI1_INS.zip onto it.. however, no matter what i do (removing battery, restarting PC, restarting ODIN), i cannot go past the "initialization" step.. no matter which ROM i try, it never goes past the "initialization" step.. please help..

Change USB cable/port, other pc or close Kies 3 on the task bar.
It sounds more like a hardware failure.

Ive already tried changing USB ports.. I dont have Kies installed in the first place.. I'll try repeating the procedure on a different system though..
i certainly hope it is not a hardware failure.. i literally slept with the phone on charge and woke up to a dead phone.. the phone boots up into the bootloop.. the recovery mode ends in the bootloop as well.. only the download mode ends up in the correct "downloading.. do no turn off target" screen.. and odin detects the phone just fine.. but upgrading any firmware via odin gets stuck on the "initialization" step.. i can answer more questions if required.. at this point i dont care which ROM works for my phone.. or if i lose data.. i just wanna revive my phone..

Bro's, gotta start somewhere, right!
The fact that you're phones are boot looping is actually a good sign - it means that they're not totally useless but salvageable.
Question: Are you able to boot into your custom recoveries, e.g. TWRP? If yes, please reply.
If no, kindly uninstall your old samsung driver, reboot pc, install new driver, put your phone into "Download mode", connect phone to pc, run Odin & hope for the best! If you can get passed this step, then it's smooth sailing...

The obligatory obvious question here. Do you have the Samsung driver installed?
Just repartition the eMMC chip using .pit file with odin that it is suitable for galaxy S4 i9500.
If anyone has tried, please tell us, that it is work or not.

FAILED flashing a custom ROM.

I tried to root my device (Samsung Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005) and it went quite well.
Then I tried to flash a custom rom (Darkwolf S7 edge port) on my phone but I ended up in a bootloop where it was stuck on the samsung logo for hours.
I tried different stuff to get out of it but nothing worked so I decided to flash the stock rom onto my phone and at the odin status I get "FAIL". And on my device it shows "Volume Size is too big 4620289 < 4718599. And my phone is unusable. I need some help asap to fix it.

Have you tried using different version of Odin, different USB cables, and USB ports? You may need to flash the stock ROM with a pit file.

Hey there Flash!! xD
Its a pain..isn't it?
Anyway I figured out how to fix the phone finally...
You'll need to flash the custom ROM with the PIT,CP,AP, and CSC files.
Here's the link...http://www.tsar3000.com/Joomla/inde...ader-csc-pit-files&catid=55:samsung&Itemid=82
>Download the file suitable for your phone and specific model...Extract those files.. BE VERY CAREFUL TO CHOSE YOUR SPECIFIC MODEL!!!
>Launch Odin...
>Put you phone in Download mode and connect it...
>Load the PIT,CP,AP and CSC files in their respective slots..
*DON'T FORGET TO CHECK THE "RE-PARTITION" OPTION*
>And then hit the "start" button and pray...IT WORKS!!!
However this will erase EVERYTHING on your phone...all the user data...if you have some photos/videos/songs/EVERYTHING...your sd card should be safe though.
I hope this works for you...it worked for me..
Let me know if it does!! Have a nice day!!

i dont own a s7 but i think you shouldnt download custom roms via odin but from twrp... But do you mean stock rom then yes use odin. Find your firmware on sammobile and unzip it and use the .tar file on odin while your phone is connected on the pc with download modus and then click start it will reboot and then youve got your stock rom..

youd be surprised at how often its the cable. We always suggest to use the factory cable when available and a very high quality aftermarket when the factory one isnt available. Different computer, different firmware etc etc etc. Glad you got it working via the power of helpful people on this forum!
