MIUI notes about a not existing Update - Redmi K20 / Xiaomi Mi 9T Questions & Answers

I'm using Xiaomi.eu (latest 12.20.20) but problem began a month ago with 20.4.28 and IMO, must be something generic about MIUI and its Updater app - Settings / My device / Updater)
Does anybody know where the Updater stores (unsuccessful) downloads and/or anything about the available updates (excepts on root of Internal memory and the Updater's folder in /data/data aka /data/user/0)
I have Magisk/root (and MiXplorer) and TWRP, hence I could delete wherever I would need..
Problem:
- Opening System or System, My Device, they note me that some update is available (screenshots 1,2).
- However, I have the latest Xiaomi.eu 12.5.20 hence there is no (and there will be no) update until 21.5.27 Thursday next week.
- And indeed, once I enter Updater and I Check for update, it reports that I'm up-to-date, i e., that there is no update for me (screenshot 3).
When I ran Security app, it reported me that (a month old) 21.4.28 is available - I'm not sure but maybe a month ago I really tried downloading 21.4.28 (when it was brand new) from Updater and it failed but then I deleted the broken zip file and the accompanying mdf5 file from the root on Internal memory.
But maybe, something/somewhere remained on the phone making it to think that an update is still available.
I already did/tried but no avail:
- Clear Cache and All data for the Updater app from Settings, Apps
- Wiped Dalwik and Cache from TWRP
- Wiped /data/system/package_cache
- Manually deleted /data/data/com.android.updater (data folder for the Updater app).
- Also, I have inspected Internal memory (files and folders on root and also /Android/data folder) and /data partition (by browsing with MiXplorer as much as it made sense) but I could nowhere find anything to look like related to updates.
- I also opened Downloads app and deleted everything it showed me for (the old) downloads.
- My /data/ota folder is empty.
- I did deep cleaning from Security app, no avail - it still notes me in Settings and My Device about some not-available (Xiaomi.eu) update.
It makes me crazy because downloading Xiaomi eu update by Updater app was a way faster than manually downloading Xiaomi.eu zip ROM by browser (even ADM) from AFH or from SFN servers.
Plus, Updater downloads both the zip and md5 files.
It's also more convenient (when it works properly), it should show when update is really available, just like for OTA, hence I would not need to check every hour on Xiaomi.eu forum or Telegram when update becomes available, to take the AFH or SFN links there to manually download...
Last Thursday when I was on 21.5.12 and Xiaomi.eu 21.5.20 really became available, Settings and My device were showing that Update was available (as they constantly do) but the Updater was answering that I was up-to-date / that there was no update for me - hence all the same as now upon I nanually updated to the latest Xiaomi.eu - and thus I was unable to use the Updater to really know when update was available and to download it
I can live with that problem (and manually update the new Xiaomi.eu next Thursday, and so on) but I would really like to solve the problem.
I want to know what exactly to delete to get rid of -however, I will absolutely NOT GO into Wiping (or even Formatting) Internal memory or Data (like Factory reset) since everything else works perfect (and the phone is my daily driver)

Problem resolved - an interesting solution was given on Xiaomi.eu forum
Although I was on 21.5.20, the following command was returning 21.4.28:
adb shell settings get global miui_new_version
Hence I had to use:
adb shell settings put global miui_new_version 21.5.20
to let it properly know it is already on 21.5.20 and to get rid of that ghost Update note in Settings and My device
Now, they are in sync with Updater (and ro fingerprint props who all already 'knew' that system was updated to 21.5.20)
Btw, I didn't breally use PC and adb shell, but terminal app on the phone and cmd commands -hence (must start with su to obtain root access):
su
cmd settings get global miui_new_version
cmd settings put global miui_new_version 21.5.20
PS:
Tested, this put settings properly survive reboot (hence ghost Update did not return upon reboot)

[solved] Google Apps to Data Solution

Hello everyone:
I have a really weird bug in my Google Apps to Data zip: http://teamuscellular.com/downloads/gapps-ennonedit.zip (no it's not signed, sorry)
I have an HTC Desire (CDMA), which this is being tested on with CyanogenMod 6.1 RC & Nightlies.
What I did with this zip is simply moved the updatable gapps from system to data (so they don't take up additional space when updated), and thus slimming down the system partition for use with Firerat's cMTD (with settings of 110 5 (110 for system, 5 for cache), so that the data partition is a whopping 320MB).
Problem is: After flashing my edited gapps.zip, I cannot install any additional applications (via Market downloading, via RootExplorer installing an apk I have on my SD card, etc.). What happens is the installation process starts, but then the phone immediately reboots and I'm stuck in a bootloop.
I have no idea what the problem would be. I was wondering if maybe somebody here knew?
I'm working on a better solution that doesn't require a customized gapps.zip file, but a solution that redirects the installation process. I would like to know if there is a specific app that is causing the odd bootloop so that I don't include it in future versions.
Thanks!
~Ennon
Nobody can take a look at this and suggest what may be wrong?
Alright whatever, I figured it out.

Some users have reported that they were able to do the update without un-rooting, others couldn't. You'll have to go ahead and try it.
Hey, any feedback on this update yet?
Thanks .
I have 2 Droid Pros in my household, both rooted, both running Droid 2 boostrapper for clockworkmod recovery. One updated perfectly; the other not. Still can't update. Not sure if it's the CWM recovery that's causing the issue.
My phone was rooted with the app Z4 and I was also unable to update. I have now unrooted and I will do a 2nd attempt in a minute .
Edit: No luck
The update was successful on my rooted, unlocked droid pro.
Does anyone know if this fixes the choppy music?
I am seeing a much more responsive unlock screen. No more do I have to drag multiple times to get it unlocked. That's the first thing I noticed
Sent from my DROID PRO using Tapatalk
having issues as well.
First try: forgot to unroot, update failed.
Second try: unrooted, update failed.
Third try: unrooted, update failed
I'm considering resetting the phone then trying again, but someone over on droid forums mentioned that the update failed even after a reset.
FWIW, after rooting I've only deleted a few of the apk's that I didn't use (amazon mp3, city id, social networking, a few others).
Thoughts?
This update did NOT fix this skipping / choppy / stuttering music issue.
Music playback still skips, chops or stutters during playback. Better luck next time Verizon

The deleted apps may be causing the problem. Try doing a factory reset, app update, then system update.
cool thanks for the input. i'll give it a shot.
ok so just a factory reset didn't work. it didn't restore the bloatware apks that I removed. I found them in another thread (another user was kind enough to post a zip file containing ALL the stock factory apks from the app folder).
when i get home from work tonight i'll reinstall them then try updating again. (don't have admin privs on my work PC, so can't copy things onto my phone from it)

thanks.
one thing i guess i should point out, the user who posted those files hadn't deleted/uninstalled the apps... he just renamed them from .apk to .bak and reverted them back to .apk to get the update to work.
another user who had actually deleted the apps and then copied them back in to the sys/apps folder can't get his device to reboot now.
i actually deleted the files, so I'm a little nervous now. Proceed with caution?
I'm still a noob to all this, would i benefit from installing something like bootstrap in the event my phone won't boot after i replace the apps?
Well I'm also having problems updating. I have all the system apps installed and running, I've tried updating rooted and unrooted, and just no luck. It's quite aggravating, I'm hoping someone or me figures out what the deal is with the Failed attempts
Solution for those unable to update!
So I've figured out a solution for those of you unable to do the update directly. I've posted a walk through in my original post for the Pro. It only updates the System.img - I've been running my Pro all day with it installed in this fashion with no issues what-so-ever. To quote my post in the other forum:
For those of you unable to get the new Droid Pro OTA working I have found a solution! You will need:
1)Root
2)Clockwork Recovery
3)System.img from update
4)Current Nandroid backup of your phone
5)ADB drivers and ASDK
So lets begin.
1)Boot into Clockwork recovery and create a backup of your phone.
2)Once complete, mount the phone as USB storage and pull the system.img file from the nandroid backup folder, as well as the nandroid.md5 (KEEP THESE FILES SAFE!!!!!)
3)Obtain the system.img file from here (Compliments of whoopsiedaisy).
4)Replace the system.img file in the Nandroid backup folder on your PHONE.
5)ADB into your phone (preferably still in recovery) and do the following:
Code:
adb shell
# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2010-xx-xx.xx.xx.xx
# rm nandroid.md5
# md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
6)If all goes will it should create a new MD5 checksum file utilizing the new system.img
7)Go to the 'backup and restore' menu in Clockwork, and select 'Advanced Restore'
8)Select the correct nandroid backup folder where the new system.img file is located, and then select 'Restore System'
9)Assuming all goes well, go to Settings, About and check your new system version!
Excellent. Wish I would've seen this before I went home from work, no ADB on the home computer, (and it's too late to mess with it). It will have to wait until after Christmas now, but at least there's a fix now....

Jiayu S3 viruses?

Hello,
I am having through a major problem here. I am trying to figure how got into this and solve this problem.
I am new to android but generally and experienced user. Bought my Jiayu from vickmall pre-rooted about 4 months ago and realised that my phone if infected when random apps where installing themselves from time to time (once very two weeks eg.).
Generally I am installing Google apps only except Adway and a few other essential non google play apps.
Also I am careful with what I installed and most of apps ever download where legit (e.g facebook etc).
Thanks to SDMaid I found a virus SYSTEM app hidden from normal app explorer with the name "Pine" and package name org.slaughter.brilliant. The name itself got me very suspicious. I also noticed that "install from unknown sources" was automatically turned on each time I opening my Wifi or Data.
So I exported the apk and scanned through various online scanner giving me obviously that is harmful.
e.g anubis.iseclab org/?action=result&task_id=18ea3597ad6a61394e5335fefcbc86899&format=html
Un-installed it through SDMaid and then the nightmare came...
I am having numerous of app ads several times a day to the notifications bar or as a shortcut icons that go to google play. I see from time to time a toast says "Downloading" without having any visible result.
You realise that this is not as common as a rogue app can be, besides the fact I am acting like a paranoid at the moment ....
With SDMaid again through latest modified files I saw 3 files in the ES Explorer folder named "recomm" that had a list with all this spammy apps that I get notifications. I was quite upset and though that ES Explorer (quite known app I think) was packed with rogue apps!?. So I deleted it but nothing. Ads came again the other day.
I tried to see from what app came the ad notification "e.g Holo Launcer" by pressing the notification for a few secs. I saw that it came from trebuchet launcher...
I tried scanning my phone with avg, malwarebytes and kaspersky. I got something only with kaspersky the following file in a .kpsh folder (related to com.kpsh.sdk.KpshService of trebuchet?).
virustotal com/en/file/6871be33ba862c4594ffee60444f7cf296cb657e4f1384a27c1be6a5da0d7078/analysis/
Erased it but it seems to recreate itself again from time to time.
Also scanned trebuchet and settings app here and got these.
virustotal com/en/file/000f796f06f193f2e61eb007d374a06d3211ddb7e1facf3c386621e1f024b828/analysis/1442420388/
virustotal com/en/file/bbb2783fb9a2ad9aa94fc71d6b78179917e8669ec266cdd5758fd1e46f853bdf/analysis/1442420356/
I decided to erase the whole .kpsh folder to see if that solves the problem till now.
My mistake I believe is leaving "Unknown sources" on as it was by default and got to this mess without know what app did all this. I believe that I was going to get a warning before something got installed but unfortunately...no.
I don't know if this was prepacked or something or was totally my mistake somehow but I am slowly giving hope away.
Any suggestion would be very helpful.
Reflash the whole thing is my very very last option since I am not familiar with the process.
Thank you all for the time reading this.
Hi,
I've experienced exactly the same problem a couple of days ago. I used the Addons Detector-app to find out that the Trebuchet-app was responsible for the icon and message ads. Unfortunately it was part of the default apps and couldn't be deleted via the apps manager.
I first installed the Nova Launcher-app as a replacement for the Trebuchet Launcher 3
and activated it (Apps -> Start Page). Then I stopped the Trebuchet app, installed the Root Uninstaller-app, enabled the request of root access (Security Superuser), started the Root Uninstaller-app, chose System Apps and selected the Trebuchet Launcher-app. After pressing the delete button and confirming the root access the app was moved to the waste basket. That's it!
I found that "install from unknown sources" was several times enabled again without my action. AVG antivirus detected ap. "Education" and "Settings" ? as malware. I have frozen "Education" - it cant't uninstall, and after that unknown sources does not change it's status..
Find com.android.fallen if exists in system\app and delete it (use file explorer with root).

Same thing here but recently I got very tired and did "reflash the whole thing".
Ingredients were: Smart Phone Flash Tool, the right USB driver, a lot of RTFM and the latest 5.1.1 Beta (#4) from Jiayu Germany. Even though it is beta, I already prefer it over that bugged OS it came with.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I checked the beta #4 at virustotal, no probs!

Decided to flash to jiayu germany 5.1.1 beta 10. I managed to get the rom but the flashing tutorial I found is in german.
Do you have instructions of backup/reflash/recover or whatever in English please?

Use SP Flash Tool on your computer. If you come from KK (such as perhaps your stock ROM) and go to to LP (such as the Beta10 ROM) then it is important to choose 'firmware upgrade' in SP Flash Tool. That's because partition layout changed (LP has one extra partition, not sure what it is for). Once on LP you can choose 'download' to flash further LP upgrades. To backup/recover a ROM one typically uses a custom recovery (mostly TWRP on S3). Beta10 comes prepackaged with LP partition aware TWRP. Beta10 also has GApps, so there is no need to flash GApps on top of it.

It's a bit hard to remember my odyssey though webspace back then but I bookmarked some stuff... but here is a pretty decent recipe: some link*
The SP Flash tool was fairly easy but to use get the drivers running was problem. Tried some things without success and got lucky with the same site: some other link**
Altogether:
1. Get SP Flash tool and the right USB driver and make it work (eg. ADB driver)
2. Get the ROM
3. Choose the ".scatter"-file in SP Flash tool and flash
It's some weeks now and I also vaguely remember that the phone had to be off (well, not really sure but you'll see).
! Don't forget to check any downloaded at least with virustotal - I did that back then but the DL-links might have changed.
!! Use it at your own risk! Some kittens might get killed, or even worse: your gets bricked.
* and ** Alas, my apologies, I am not allowed yet to post links but if you google for androidxda sp flash you should find it instantly or just let me know.
Okay, I'm probably a little late for this, but hopefully this will be somewhat helpful to other people having the same problem.
I myself have purchased a Jiayu S3 Advanced a few months back: while the price is hard to beat, it comes with that ROM that sometimes starts installing "random" apps on its own. At first it was bearable, but at some point it started downloading multiple apps every day.
After some analysis (pretty much looking for data usage by different apps) I figured that the problem was with the Trebuchet launcher (which was the only app in that list that I didn't recall using - and also, why would it need Internet access?).
So, what I've done was rather straightforward: install Google Now launcher (but any other launcher should do), uninstall that other launcher. Worked like a charm!
Also, I've heard a few people complaining about this sort of problem with Chinese smartphones: watch out and consider that next time you buy a new smartphone! I know I will

FLOSSbOxIN - A Customized Stock ROM

FLOSSbOxIN - Since 2016, I am a non-foogle person, nor do I have shucksfook, or anything of those stuffs. I was on Telegram and used to run the flossboxin channel, but left the application due to too much of spam and useless stuffs, and moreover, privacy issues tbvh. Now my XMPP channel is named FLOSSbOxIN too. I recently lost my M30, however, I have been for quiet sometime trying to get this M30 debloated to a level where knox also does not trip, nor where one will have to face the unnecessary Samsung bloatware and annoying analytics. Finally, I have made it to that level, after several permutation combinations.
Code:
[B]FLOSSbOxIN M305F Debloated FOSS/FLOSS Stock ROM[/B]
Released: [B]20200925[/B]
Patch Level: September 01, 2020
Build Date: [B]20200926[/B]
Base Version: Android 10
Build #: QP1A.190711.020.M305FDDS6CTI1
Kernel: [I]4.4.177-19407255[/I]
UI Core: [U]One UI 2.0[/U]

FLOSSbOxIN - ROM -- Cloud - Direct Link
Odin V3.14.4 -- AFH
TWRP 3.4.0-0 -- AFH
Magisk Canary -- AFH
Installation Guide (Only For Bootloader UL On Q/10)
Download ROM from the links given.
Boot to recovery (stock/TWRP) (Guide Link)
Code:
adb reboot download
You will have to format data, as the ROM is decrypted, and coming from an encrypted ROM will give issues. For decrypting, do a "format data" in TWRP Recovery and then reboot to recovery and Wipe Dalvik/ART, Cache, System, Data, Hidden, Internal
Copy over ROM OS & DM-Verity file (do not rename DM-Verity file, keep as is)
Flash ROM - Would take around 10 minutes time for it to flash
Go to wipe, and wipe /hidden
Flash DM-Verity file
Reboot - should take around 5-6 minutes
Notes:
I have removed the setup wizard altogether
Post system starts, wait 5-10 minutes, as system tries to integrate system apps, which are newly introduced
Only necessary foogle stuff is kept, including Maps+Location, GSF & Play Services and all other foogle stuffs is removed
Somehow, even after removing the notorious HIYA (so called caller id and spam protection service), it somehow comes back with a valid internet/mobile data connection. If you wish to remove it again, boot to TWRP, mount /system and then delete the hiya service folder and clear dalvik/cache, and reboot
If any app has permission issue, then reinstall as "user" app (install again manually), and reboot sysui. Should work post that, as sometime, few apps are by default not allowed system changes by Samsung framework, and to add each app to framework is a bigggg task, and very irritating too
Still if any app (e.g., AnysoftKeyboard (see git issue), then uninstall as system, and reinstall as user
Ensure minimal apps are made /system, as they can be harmful

Fully debloated
Fully stock
Smoother, faster and has long battery run

Okay mate.
Few ways to do it.
1. By installing rooted AP with TWRP already included:->
Install September stock Firmware from my post here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-m30/development/rom-t4167497
Use that to flash the September FW. Use ODIN via windows, and use the file: AP ROOTED WITH TWRP RECOVERY. Flash only AP. CP is optional. Follow the steps there. Ensure to flash DMVERITY.
This is one way...
Another way:
2. Flash stock ROM. Connect to wifi/mobile data and setup. Change the time to say 7 days prior to today. Wait 30 minutes and boot to download mode via the following method:: switch off. Press Vol+/- together and connect to laptop/pc via usb. Ensure usb debugging is ON and then perform. Now you are in download mode. Flash TWRP.tar file from AP. All checkboxes should be unticked. Once flashed successfully, press vol- and power button for 7-8 seconds and let go off vol- upon haptic feedback and press vol+ to enter to twrp recovery. You can let go of the buttons once twrp shows up.
Now format data and reboot to twrp again. Mount data and /system and if OS is installed boot to system, else flash a ROM of your choice.
3rd way:
3. Download FLOSSbOxIN (FLOSS/Google variant available). Extract to any desktop folder. Now open 7Zip and make a zip file with all the .img files. Choose .tar (available from 7Zip dropdown as well) and rename the tar file to say rom.tar.
Once done flash this one via AP. Ensure all checkboxes are unchecked. Reboot to TWRP following the steps in method 2 above. Format data, boot to twrp, flash dm-verity and boot to system. You can wipe cache/dalvik and /hidden if you want. Will take around 10 minutes to boot. Dont forget to boot to twrp first and flash dmverity, else you will end in bootloop.
Note: With Samsung, in case you forget to flash DMVerity, and by mistake clicked boot to system, do not worry. Switch off, or reboot to twrp and mount /system and flash. Wipe dalvik and cache, reboot. Done.

Done.

@vdbhb59 THANK YOU SO MUCH ,SIR.I was about to sell the phone coz TWRP could not be booted.
Finally,TWRP is booted huge thanks to you.Procedure 2 did not work(bootloop) and Procedure 3 gave me .binary error in odin(maybe i messed up in some steps). But Procedure 1 was easiest and foolproof & it booted TWRP in first try without any bootloops.
Now coming to Floss ROM(Vanilla). It was simple, clean and elegant and performance is good as well.I have not checked the battery life with this ROM but i hope it gives me more than standard battery life. Will be checking other ROMS as well-Lineage,Bliss,Turbo etc. and will be settling once i find ROM suitable for me.
Again thank you DEV for guiding me,giving me your time and most importantly contributing to this community !!

Anytime mate. Actually all the 3 ways I mentioned, do work. Probably, some trouble while flashing. However, no worries, I am glad you were able to boot to TWRP and flash a bloat free OS. Enjoy mate, and happy riding.
Battery life is around 1.5-2 days basis your usage. At times more, touching 3.5 days too. Again, the logic basis is always usage and background stuff.
Bliss does not boot for all, LOS does though.
BTW, which FLOSSbOxIN variant did you try? Google one will eat more battery obviously, against FLOSS one.
FLOSS(Vanilla)-[without google] review
Everything is good with the ROM but some problems i faced could be solved by following procedures:
1.If some apps does not work/launch as expected then "UNINSTALL AS SYSTEM" then REINSTALL it or INSTALL APP OF YOUR CHOICE.For eg:Vinyl player.
2.If AURORA STORE does not download apps then first give permission to Aurora Services and then rerun Store.Otherwise install GooglePlayStore manually once, update GMS and it will work.PS:You can delete PlayStore or disable if you want to.
Other than these everything is FINE.Would certainly recommend to try this ROM ?

Thanks for this mate. Though not bugs, but the app behaviour itself. The ROM itself does not have any bugs.
October release coming soon.
Dear Dev,
Thanks for the rom.
My 3 queries
1. Getting access denied on some files like magisk, odin, and m30 database.
2. Is there any aggresive battery saver or something alike in rom which switches off all functions except calling?
3. The download link to download google version is very slow and is showing close to 17 hours to download on 150 MBps connection.
Thanks and Regards
Ashish

Hi Ashish,
Actually, AFH is having some issues. I too am unable to view files at times. Magisk and ODIN are Public files anyways. You can navigate with androidfilehost then my user, which is vdbhb59.
Battery saver is there, Ultradata by Samsung itself. You can use any 3rd party app too.
Google version link is quick here. Showing 25 minutes at 80Mbps.
Update - 20201017
Hi All,
Update released for the new version.
N.B., the update by Samsung never was for October 2020 patches, and was only a con, as they moved the apps & priv-app between the 2 folders, and added a very big BUG along with several privacy issues.
When I reached out to them with the details, I was blocked, and my account was suspended.
I have stripped away every bit and piece of bloat and BUGS (afaic). Security patch is still September.
Also, the stock camera is now replaced with 2 open variants, and much better ones. With the latest update, while trying to remove Knox, and some resources, the stock Camera breaks up fully, and the hidl does not link, rendering the app useless.
Magisk Canary 20201017
20201017 - FLOSSbOxIN_Foogle_V2_20201017
20201017 - FLOSSbOxIN_V2.2_20201017
Difference between the 2 versions
Difference between the 2 versions -->
FLOSSbOxIN_Foogle_V2_20201017 - this version is a bit smaller compared to the version 2.2 below. Version 2.2 contains a few more privacy oriented apps, and XDA app as well inbuilt, along with OSMAnd+ and UNLP. I have retained GMS Core and Maps as OSMAnd does not cover many parts of Asia and Russia.
FLOSSbOxIN_V2.2_20201017 - this version contains the following:
SMS - QKSMS
Mail - K9 & pEp - both open source. Both more reliable then stock.
Clipboard - Added function for clipboard. Probably, some apps may not work with it. Ideally, it will come as an option with pop-ups.
Maps - GMaps, OSMAnd+, UNLP
Music - Odyssey & Vinyl
Video - MPV is a great tool. VLC somehow does not integrate with Samsung while building, so have not added it yet.
SimpleTools - Gallery & Calendar alongside stock ones. Do use the open source ones, as they are fully privacy oriented. Some folks like Samsung one, but it is filth filled, and I have taken huge time out to prepare these stuffs, so do try.
Camera - OpenCamera & FreeDCam have been added. I have been using these 2 since a long time, so, do use them too.
Browser - 2 variants of Ungoogled Chromium, Bromite Webview alongside Android Webview.
Terminal - Termus. Do install the relevant addons from F-Droid/AuroraDroid and enjoy.
Downloader - Download Navi is prebuilt.
Launcher - OpenLauncher is added too, which is a better option compared to Samsung one. Use the one you prefer.
Stores - As usual F-Droid (2 variants), Aurora Store and Aurora Droid.
The ROM has been tested completely, in terms of retaining of Samsung features, and additional stuffs that I could integrate. I hope on getting Stock custom ROM soon, if the framework parts pans out, and may have inbuilt power menu options, more QS stuffs and theming, all again depending on time I can spare and framework nuisance.
It would be great if Theme option is added

Did they replaced system.img with super.img ? Samsumg keeps adding their security related sh**t in the name of security patches making difficult for devs to mod their Roms.

Nope. They moved few /system/apps to /priv-app and to /vendor and made a lot of framework changes to ensure boot goes for a toss. One of the worst was how system auto cleans at a schedule. Also busybox installation fails due to /system free space being minimal.
Few more things, which I think cannot explain here.

How to manually update a Redmi note 7 without root

Hi everyone, I've had this Redmi note 7 for a couple of years now. In the last few months its software started behaving erratically:
- Settings app doesn't work anymore, it gets stuck as soon as you open it
- No google apps work besides Google chrome (play store even lists possible app updates as: (, , , , , , , , )
- Keyboard doesn't open
- 3/4 of the installed apps behave like settings does
- Connecting it to a PC doesn't allow you to access the phone memory if not through adb
- Every x minutes a message pops up saying that "The security app is not responding"
Because of the points listed above, it became impossible for me to update the OS from settings and try to fix this whatever is happening. After looking online for a bit I found a guide that basically had this steps:
- Download the update.zip from xiaomi website (Done)
- Move the zip file to the root folder of the phone
- Restart the phone and enter recovery mode
- Select the options "Update from update.zip" or something similar
The problem I have with step 2 is that whenever I try to move the zip, it denies permission. Trying to get in as root throws "disabled in production build" error (I guess because the phone is not rooted).
Is there any way to recover this crippled phone? Has any of you ever witnessed anything similar to what is happening to it? Is there a way to update the OS without using apps/settings or root?
If you need additional info just ask and I'll provide.
