Unlocked on Verizon network just pulled the update OTA after I read this post.

october patch around 230 MB. Just performed an OTA on my unlocked firmware with verizon csc.
Never through i would see the day where unlocked firmware updates get ahead of the carriers.

Still waiting on mine. I am unlocked on Tmobile. My last update was done manually though...so we will see.

Thats awesome, I just manually flashed this one. might have something to do with the fact that i am using T-Mobile Sim. What Carrier are you using?

I got my unlocked phone on 10/1 from Samsung. Immediately, I got update for September patch. Now I checked it, it showing no updates available.
I am in US, Tmobile network.

Use Frija to manually download and Odin to Manually flash your phone if its important for you else just wait for updates if you dont like to tinker.

Yeah, i think i will wait. I think in couple of days every one will get it.

So crazy that Sprint drops right away but TMB has been dead last, considering they are merging to 1 company. You'd think they'd merge the updates departments considering it's literally duplicate work for many phones.
Heck, even Verizon and ATT have been beating TMB. On the s9+, s10+ and N10+, I would usually see TMB or Comcast beating everyone, with ATT typically being last.

Also considering how the ROM is essentially exactly the same except for CSC features and how easily we all flash the updates they should actually work on the update teams consolidation. TMB sucks these days and the way devices get updated in US it sucks that one loses the advantage of unlocked device the moment they put in a carrier sim.

Same though I didn't buy from Samsung, I did buy it unlocked. Once you put in your sim then you are dependent on the Carrier to release an update even if you are on an unlocked phone. The best way to go about is to doodled using Frija or the Ota and Non Ota update thread and then flashing using Odin.

I always assumed it was Samsung who did that for their unlocked phones instead of the carriers.

it' up to carriers on unlocked phone.
i have unlocked ultra20 Ultra on Visible, NEVER gotten any ota.
instead of odin and flashing your phone with cable.
you can just insert a expired ATT simcard or expired Mint simcard and do a manual check for update and it will show up

Unlocked S8 US

Anyone know why Samsung takes so long to update the unlocked version? Is it due to compatability with all carriers and need to push carrier updates to get approved then they can push update to unlocked?
I'd imagine one reason is that they sell far fewer units for the unlocked versions.
I believe it is for security reasons. Easier to push out updates with errors that you can't exploit because of it being locked. Then having to make sure updates for the unlocked versions are more secure
I doubt it has anything to do with carrier compatibility, because I know that Samsung is not certifying the unlocked S8 for ATT. That is why the unlocked one cannot get VoLTE on ATT. There are very few unlocked devices that ATT certified for their network (HTC A9 comes to mind) and get on VoLTE. Verizon is not too far from this.
So, if we scratch carrier certification (because Samsung is not doing it), who knows what kind of contractual barrier with carriers is preventing them from updating the unlocked S8 and S8+. I guess similar contractual barrier that is preventing Sony selling their unlocked models with enabled fingerprint readers.

Ok that's the difference. You have a T-Mobile version that got a similar update except from what I had read it is May security patch. I actually have a factory unlocked S8 that isn't from any carrier. It got the update with June security patch

Umm all updates come from samsung, carriers simply give the go ahead to release the update, everything is still downloaded from samsungs servers. So no att isn't hosting or sending you an update at all.
Samsung never seemed to pay much attention to the unlocked us phones before and it seems to be continuing now, canadian phones have been getting monthly updates since day one, although the monthly updates are a month behind google.

Carries put out the updates WAY faster, Samsung provides update to carriers, they tweak it and put it out. Takes Samsung forever. Everything I said was true, makes perfect sense.
Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Tapatalk
I have seen this lately with S8: For example T-Mobile USA, provides updates to fixes and some features about a week or so faster, but a 1 month behind on the security patch, than unlocked version. Then unlocked version a week or so later, gets next security patch and other fixes that T-Mobile released a little earlier. I also believe that if unlocked version is a little late, but it make contain a little more fixes/changes. It would be important to note when/if carriers will be faster on releasing new OS update, such as 7.1.1 or Android 8, which ever comes first for Samsung phone.

No they don't, all the updates are hosted on samsung's servers, carriers don't push anything to your phone. Carriers don't do any tweaks, samsung does/builds everything for them based on their needs, carriers obviously test the build and some do it faster than others like tmobile but that's it. Reason the unlocked phones get updates late is because they're not a priority, they don't have a contract with a carrier to release updates so they take their time.
Do you really think samsungs allows carriers around the world to manually tweak its software? Carriers simply validate the firmware to make sure features like volte/wifi calling works fine, that's it.
You can download every carrier's firmware with that samfirm software, guess where it connects to? Samsung's servers.

Unlocked S8 Oreo Update

Has anyone with an unlocked S8 (US) received the Oreo ota yet?
Ive always had Verizon branded Galaxy / Android phones in the past so I am not as familiar with the unlocked ota process. Do unlocked Galaxy phones typically receive ota updates last?
I have a Tmo device on U1(unlocked) firmware and haven't received the update yet. It's somewhat annoying that both Vzw and Tmo got oreo before the unlocked.

Why is unlocked variant last to get updates? No carrier bloat to update, so technically it should be first.

Unfortunately that's just how it's is, hence why Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint have the official Oreo update including the exynos variant. As for unlocked variants they'll eventually get it, but you'll probably get Oreo root faster than your official update. Or if you're impatient just grab an Oreo beta and work with that.
My Verizon s8+ that I use my tmobile sim got it yesterday. It changed the Verizon boot logo to tmobile. No more Verizon bloatware.
They said the U1 beta testers would be the first to get it too and that didn't happen.
Who ultimately pushes the ota for unlocked phones? Is it the manufacturer (Samsung) or the carrier that you're using the phone on?
If it is the carrier, then I suppose it makes sense that they would prioritize their locked variants first.
Waiting for Oreo OTA
Re: They said the U1 beta testers would be the first to get it too and that didn't happen.
Yes. It's taking a great deal of patience. Samsung seems to have appreciated our feedback as beta testers and then led us out to pasture and left is behind. I think I'm running a Jan 16 beta build and have been waiting...
What software version are you guys on? I am still on nougat 7.0. Are they going to push out 8.0 and skipping 7.1?

I was told that the unlocked variant needs all US carriers to sign off on it before they can send it out.
I'm running beta Oreo for U1. Still no update. I wouldn't mind so much if the lockscreen didn't interfere with listening to music, the music gets slow, choppy, distorted sounds when the lock screen turns off my display. Can't listen to music in my car, it's so annoying. Wish they'd expedite the update like now. They basically jacked my radio with that bug. lol

no that's bull****. that defeats the entire purpose of getting an unlocked phone.
The unbranded and unlocked version must work with both GSM and CDMA networks. They also must work with the carriers features like, WiFi calling, call waiting, etc. If I understand this correctly, they will require some form of carriers' certifications. Therefore unlocked phones will face delays from both Samsung and the carriers. I made a mistake of not believing former owners and publications about slow updates when I bought my S8 from Samsung. I have since corrected my mistake and bought a Pixel 2. You'll have to adjust to a plain Jane Android but you must give up something to get the timely OS updates from Google.
I am now fully convinced that Samsung will never change and Samsung phone owners who are dissatisfied with the unlocked OS updates can buy phones other than Samsung. Sony seems to be serious with the US market with their new Xperia XZ2.Sony's OS is as close to plain Android and their updates are not bad. My 2-yr old Xperia X has been on Oreo 8.0 for awhile now. Essential can be a player too.
Do yourself a favor. Stay away from Samsung if your priority is timely OS update.
If they let Snapdragon Users unlock bootloaders this was not a problem. May they will let us do that or some one will find an exploit i mean, yo can unlock bootloader on china snapdragon s8. #IWillBuyMyGalaxyS10WithExynos

Well I hope this is true for Oreo, but I doubt. The 7.0 the unbranded fw for at&t doesn't even allow VoLTE or WiFi calling out of the box.
Not sure about ATT but Oreo works on those features from T-Mobile. By the way I failed to mention that I am on Oreo Beta in my unlocked S8 which I used with Tmo.

Modem Security Patches - SIM lock

Hey guys! Can someone tell me if it's okay to update without getting "simlock"
I'm on T-Mobile network with an unlocked Sprint Essential.
The reason why I am asking is because if you take a look into the screenshot you'll see that there has been modem security patches.

Correct! Thanks for pointing that out...it's a Sprint Variant, but I'm on T-Mobile's network. I'm one of those unlucky customers who purchase their phones from a fraudulent seller and I think they did some hack and then essential patched it and then XDA came out with a way around that but with this new update they have another modem patch. which network are you on and which variant do you have and did you already update?
Thanks!
oh yea, im on an unlocked essential on tmobile. not sure about your phone

Did you reset your phone? It may have changed, but worked for me.
Its been a while so wasn't sure if a reboot fixed it or if I factory reset it. I do know I bought the s8+ from Verizon then moved to att used it for a while like that, then realized I wasn't getting updates. So that's when I started messing with it. I know after i got it fixed i had the att boot screen as well as all att features.
I have one that was purchased and still financed on Verizon and worked initially with a tracfone AT&T network sim. Then I went to sell it to an att customer and when their sim went in it pops up a message that says call verizon to change carriers on this device. Anyone else?
