Does 7T Pro McLaren support standalone 5g mode (no LTE)? - OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren Questions & Answers

Summary: The SIM card that came in the box for McLaren 5g says TM with 4 numbers. Can I use 5G standalone mode? Read on for why this matters.
I'm using an old SIM, and I recently get a text message from TMO that I should upgrade my sim, pointing to http://t-mo.co/5GSIM
But on that page is says the following:
R15: If you see R15 in pink on the SIM card, you're all set!
TMXXXX: If you see TM followed by 4 numbers, you need to switch to the new SIM that came with your device.

It's fully capable of it with the x55 modem. However, T-Mobile owns the permission for this phone to get on SA 5G. Will need an update.
C-NET Article: "T-mobiles-5g-network-upgrade-means-better-indoor-and-rural-coverage" states:
(sorry no link, jr member)
Regarding SA 5G "T-Mobile will also add support for the new network to the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G and OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren that were released in 2019 via a software update, however no timeline has yet been given for when that update will arrive. "
That being said, T-Mobile is explicit. You must have the R15 SIM, a capable SA 5G device and be in a SA coverage area.
Get your R15 SIM. Be ready.

Fair enough. I stopped by a T-Mobile store and got a new R15 SIM. So now to wait for the upgrade. Or maybe just buy a new device lol.

https://prepaid.t-mobile.com/browse-phones
i ordered and got r15 sim last week. far right on prepaid phones page "2020 sim"
since i didn't order a plan it cost $10 w/ free 2 day shipping. anxiously awaiting update.

The McLaren doesn't have SA yet, but there's some FCC docs showing that it's coming soon. I'll probably have to get one of these R15 sims as well.

Thanks for the info. I know we'll get the update eventually. Hadn't heard of the new SIM card requirements. Just ordered mine for $10. Hope they send the new kind. Ordered the 2020 one.

For what it's worth. I went and got the new sim, for free, after work when that text message was sent by t-mobile. My biggest complaint about this phone is that my texting, whether I use the stock app, or install google messages and try to go RCS, has always had issues, especially over WiFi. But after the sim swap, I have ZERO texting issues, it all works exactly as advertised, RCS through Google messages as well. I believe my previous sim card had been around since I bought my Note 4. So for anyone have texting issues especially, get the new sim card, especially with 5G SA on the horizon for this phone. I just took my wife's S20+ over to get the sim upgrade last night, and now it natively connects to 5G NR. Impressive.
That being said, I'm probably going to jump ship to either the pixel 4a 5G of pixel 5, but purchasing one from google for that precious unlockable bootloader. It's been a year since I upgraded from my 6T, and I really miss having viper4audio in the car for streaming.
mmarcz

I called T-Mobile customer service, requested the R15 SIM.
First call the rep asked..."do you get 5G on your phone right now?" "yeah then you don't need one of these, you got what you needed in an update that was pushed out to your phone"
Second call...took 15 minutes explaining to the rep what I wanted, supervisor involved, had to read them my IMEI, etc. Said they mailed it. Nothing arrived.
Third attempt, walked right into a T-Mobile store. They knew exactly. In and out 10 mins, no charge.
I brought my 8 5G in with me to avoid any guff. Of course that worked.
I popped it into my 7TP McLaren, it hasn't left it since.
It's so clean. No more slow texts, no weird service pauses as it figured out how to get from LTE to 5G to Wi-Fi and back.
Happy, but I want to know WHY on that part there.

""this is an initial update for new 5G stand alone technology" new update today

Upgrading to the new r15 sim also fixed my wifi calling and texting since I switched to the mclaren. Holy crap, I only upgraded for the 5g

The 39 update was released yesterday and enabled SA. I confirmed it works by using the debug menu to force my phone into NR mode, unfortunately the result of a speed test were pretty disappointing.
On a more positive note, the LTE speeds at my house are faster than ever. ?

I've got no sim after this update....guess I'm stopping by the T-Mobile OTW home.

"5G" lol. I had a "Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G Plus" for a few months and more than once I found my phone with no internet. I had perfect 5G signal, and no internet. I rebooted, nothing. I then disabled 5G, forcing it to 4G-LTE, and suddenly I had internet. 5G uses different towers, and apparently they can lose internet and the phone doesn't realize it. The only reason T-Mobile, and every other carrier, is pushing 5G is to get the congestion off their 4G-LTE towers. But I digress. At this point, due to my 5G issues in the area, I don't care for 5G one way or another. I eventually couldn't stand the Galaxy S20 any longer so I sold it and bought this OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren 5G used on ebay. I could care less about its 5G capabilities. Nice to have but not a deal-breaker for me. I was going to hold onto this 7T Pro 5G for a few months and then try and pickup a used 8T Pro, but apparently that's not happening. I don't know if I should get an 8T or not, I may just see if there's a 9 Pro. I don't mind waiting, this 7T Pro 5G smokes the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G in terms of everyday usability.

That's the way Verizon's mmWave 5G works (which is insanely fast but also completely useless because it only works outdoors while walking and needs towers every 500 to 1000 feet which will only be installed in the most crowded sections of the most crowded metro areas). T-Mobile uses same towers for 3G/4G LTE/5G NR as they all use the same frequencies (600 to 2500 MHz). Not 60 Ghz garbage that can't travel more than quarter mile or even pass through glass or your hand. That's also why T-Mobile was able to roll out low-band 600MHz 5G to virtually the entire country in such a short time. Because it can travel over 10 miles from tower to indoor phone. Now T-Mobile is working on adding more bandwidth to low-band 5G along with rolling out the mid-band 2500Mhz 5G which will be where the real speed is. It's already out in 300+ cities and will be 1000+ by end of year. That's where the speed will be. 300mbps+ to start. And it'll work indoors and while driving too lol. And my phone is all ready, willing, and able

No new sim, no SA 5G support. You can test it out yourself by dialing *#*#4636#*#* (has to be from the default OnePlus dialer/phone app while set as default dialer app in settings, apps, default apps -- Won't work with Google Dialer/phone app.), click phone information, and set preferred network type to NR only.
If you get data (with WiFi off), then SA 5G is working. If you get no signal, SA 5G isn't working. However, calls will not work in SA 5G (NR only mode) with WiFi calling off because the X55 modem doesn't support VoNR. So once you test, set it back to how it was so VoLTE calls start working again. To my knowledge, no phones have the X60 modem yet, so no device can access VoNR/make calls when set to NR Only (wifi calling solves this but that requires wifi)
This was a life saver a few days ago in the aftermath of Hurricane Zeta. 95%+ of the entire NOLA metro area and major surrounding suburbs were without power. And the 4G LTE network was so slow it might have been off from hundreds of thousands of people all trying to use it at the same time (and so was NSA 5G because it depends on 4G LTE to set up a connection and also some signalling to make it actually work -- I had full bars on both). I forced it to "NR Only"/SA 5G and my data speeds went from too slow to browse the internet, much less stream video, to well over 110 mbps. Didn't care phone calls weren't working at that point haha.
SA 5G for the win!! :good:

Tmobile a2017u network changes

Okay. I switched to Tmob about 6 months ago. Service was awesome where i live. (Upstate SC). In the last month or two, areas i used to have service have nothing at all. Looking at the maps, my service on the Axon matches the 2014 map. My conclusion? Tmob has deployed newer spectrum in my area that Axon 7 doesnt support and turned off bands axon 7 does support. I have come to the conclusion i just need a new phone. (OP6t). or to switch back to verizon (nope). i was just wondering if it sounds logical for tmob to switch off older bands whilst turning on new ones. this area used to be primarily b2 and b4. now, i get nothing in that area. everywhere else is mostly b12 but also some b4 and some b2. is it plausible they switched off b2 when they replaced it with the 600mhz the chic at the store says we have now?
I'm not sure in your case, I had to update my sim card, the phone was ok for the network bands however the sim was an older sim and wasn't compatible with the network bands.
New sim fixed it for me, maybe in your case too.
Ditto. Call customer service and they can send you one for free (you'll have to wait 3-5 days though). If you go to a store you'll have to pay, but customer service can credit your account for the cost of the SIM if you ask nicely. If you're lucky, the store rep will give you one for free and you still keep the credit for your next bill.
Be careful since not all SIM cards are created equally. The Axon 7 Mini my kid uses had to have a very specific SIM in order to work (60.xx series). Anything else (M series, 50 series) and it would only connect to Bands 2 and 4. My Axon 7 seems to be a bit more forgiving (though 50 series was too old).
i will probably go back to the store tomorrow. i dont mind paying $10 if it fixes the issue instantly. then again, i only switched to Tmob in December, so i dont have what i would call an old sim card. something is awry, though. it was far better service initially. ive almost always been on variants of RR roms. currently b32 based with hellsgate kernel. the rep in the store when i went in last week told me she would have a network extender sent to my house. havent seen it yet. there was an implication that in switching on the new bands here, they were swutching off older bands. my area is mostly b12 with bands 2 and 4 where 12 is weak or not farmed in. heres hoping i dont have to wait until One Plus 6t comes out to have good reception again. would surely be a waste of my DD and my spare axon 7.

I have no issues with CRICKET/aka/ATT or HOME. They both work in my Axon 7 ( 7.1.1) okay.
Unfortunately, the issue is not my sim card. its actually weak signal in my area. its a shame, bc aside from that, i love tmob. but service ultimately has to be existent. looking at coverage maps, it should be awesome where i live and work, but the reality is their maps are a gross exaggeration. idk what fugazi they sprinkled on it by making it all pink, but where i live and work, the black holes outweigh the pink.
UPDATE: the fix was a verizon sim card. lol. no, really. permanent fix so long as i dont put a dumb pink one back in.

I am using it in an area that was pretty weak, and it is working pretty good. It should get much better as the Sprint mid-range frequencies are turned on.
I thought the one plus mclerean was a low band phone not a mid band
last update added band n41, it's even listed on t-mobile site
I came to correct my post. I see that it can handle it just not mmwave or whatever they call it. Which I heard you can't get that through buildings. I only use my phone when I'm indoors

It is, Sprint has the midband that will be used by Tmo for 5G.
Its good when it works. Theres one spot in town where it says its full bars but internet doesnt want to work until i swtich to lte. Im guessing its just an issue with that tower.

T-Mobile's 5G implementation is still pretty new and I've noticed that 5 g can sometimes be slower than LTE. That being said, I suspect that T-Mobile will improve this with time. What is nice is that 5G networks are exclusive to 5G capable phones, meaning congestion can sometimes be better, at least from my understanding. I'm glad to see US carriers finally embracing 5G, despite the fact that it may not be as capable as international variants. Time will tell if we see any significant improvements with 5G coverage.
I have noticed significant improvements in coverage when traveling. My job requires I travel around a lot, since I do electrical work for cell phone towers. Historically,4G LTE coverage with T-Mobile has been spotty in certain parts of the country, but comparing my Pixel 3a XL with LTE coverage versus my McLaren 5G has shown a huge improvement and overall coverage and speed!there have been times where my pixel will get around 5 mbps vs my OP7T Pro McLaren 5G will be hitting well into 80+!
I have seen improvement also. I had to use a TMo booster in my house it was so bad. I have turned it off now.
I sometimes turn off 5G and get better speeds on LTE. But I checked a spectrum map, TMobile doesn't have enough low band spectrum in my specific geographic region. Completing the Sprint merger should help with that, and the 7t McLaren can support the Sprint frequencies with just a software update.
Fortunately I spend almost no time in cities where mmWave would matter, that's the only thing this phone can't do that other 5g phones can.
I have 5g in my rural town but the past two days the network has been acting up they might be working on the towers or something. Even my 4glte kicks of and on including my 5g.....
In my geography 5g is slower than 4g, but I checked a spectrum map and Tmo only has the minimum possible low band spectrum in my city and region. I've heard 5g works better if Tmo has 20mhz or more, and the addition of Dish licencing deals and Sprint spectrum is supposed to help later in 2020.
Anyway I'm usually just staying home using WiFi so it doesn't matter that much at the moment.
I get 110 mbs a second wear side of town and 30 mbs middle of town with 5g but I have a constant connection with 5g with 4g lte I sometimes have to reload pages cause of congestion

5G on Vodafone UK

I read some comments about the UK networks not giving 5G to this phone.
Can anyone who received it and lives in a 5G area check if the phone gets 5G with a Vodafone sim please?
Three sell the OP8/OP8P, so presumably 5G will work just fine on there at the very least. Can't say about Vodafone myself, but there's talk over at the OnePlus forums that 5G doesn't (yet?) work on O2. Current theory is that this is because O2 haven't approved the device - can't see any technical reason why the phone shouldn't support 5G on any of the UK networks: They all use band n78 (3500MHz) and the phone supports that. O2 has additional 5G frequency in band n41 (2300MHz) which the OP8/OP8P does not support (but O2 haven't rolled out 5G in this band yet, at least not that I've seen in my travels across the internet looking for information).

I can get the EE 5g full package for £31 reduced from 40. I only pay £20 for three both packages with unlimited data. I don't have any 5g over my house at all but EE is 5g nearby in my local city whereas three isnt. Been thinking about it but really not sure. If it was over my house definitely.
Not seen the one plus on EE Anyone shed any light as can see people say they are selling it
EE wont be selling the Oneplus 8/Pro.
3 has exclusive rights in the UK.
But you can use a 5G sim in the Oneplus 8/Pro from EE

You'd be better off sticking it out with three, because three own a huge portion of the 5g spectrum.

Oh yes, every time I called cs for poor coverage, they kept saying this mantra.
I lost faith in Three building a decent network ever.
As I said, took out a Vodafone sim only and could not be happier. Three (at least for me and my family) is simply trash. No wonder it's cheap, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys (crap coverage).
This is my humble opinion, I know, some people are happy, but I spent 2×1 year suffering from Three.
The amount of frequency available to an operator doesn't equate to a good network / coverage.
(Totally anecdotal and off-topic: I used to be with Three for many years, until one day signal just vanished for our home address and we had to walk down the road to get a signal. After a month and half of vague promises of fixing it, I gave up and switched network. Haven't tried them since. This was a about five years ago now.)

Funnily enough, Vodafone were terrible for my wife. She was with them for about 15 years then they started messing up her bills, overcharged her by £300 one month then undercharged her etc. She didn't have a correct bill for a year until she left them. That was about 2 years ago. [emoji2369] I've personally found three ok but haven't tried another network for about 7 years.

Yes, I heard scary stories myself about their billing problems. I guess there is no perfect operator.
All I was saying, that where I live and move around (North West and Central London), I found Three very bad compared to EE (I was with them before moving to Three, but was annoyed by the high pricing) and Vodafone (not as good as EE but way better than Three).
One anecdotal case when I could not get coverage in Oxford street (yes, that Oxford street), Three cs advised me to switch to 3G only. Well, I was not happy with their solution obviously. It's hard to believe, that they will whip up a decent 5G network when they quite obviously can't nail their 4G for years.
yes, 5g works out of the box for Vodafone UK, aint any use for me though xd only Glasgow got it, so whenever i travel to work , i can see 5g popping up on the phone

Yep, I contacted OnePlus customer support and they confirmed that it will need an update to work on O2. They also said while they (apparently, is my reading of it) are aware and working on it they cannot commit to actually releasing an update that fixes it at this point.
O2 have also said there's no technical reason the phone shouldn't work, and that they're not somehow preventing it.
No idea of the reasons behind this obviously. Doesn't really impact me as my home area isn't 5G enabled currently and that probably won't happen until I'm on another phone anyway.

Sprint/T-mobile Internet speeds.

Sprint users have you noticed faster internet speeds? I received an update on 4/22 follow by the message about T-mobile allowing us to tap into their 5G. However, this afternoon when i got home my browsing was a bit snappy. I did a speed test on two different apps and was pulling 140 to 160 Mbps where before I was only getting 12-24 Mbps.
I got the same text, unfortunately I still have yet to get a software update to use the 5g from tmobile.
I just got the phone today, the note 8 on LTE was doing over 30mbps, I turned this on, 5G kicked on automatically and speeds at 24mbps lol. I saw this post, and checking for updates now to see if I can tap into Tmo 5g.
Is the software you have installed G988USQU1ATD6?
I haven't got 5g didn't connect to 5g for a few mins while traveling, I have noticed through signal checker being on band 2 lte at home very crappy sprint lte after profile and prl update so have been able to test speeds, before update I had excellent service on sprint
I had the software upgrade earlier this month. Today at work I had crappy service sending and receiving texts and slow network speeds. Now at home my status bar shows Sprint|SPRINT and have 5g. But with speeds of 2.5 up and .5 down at best.

Here is my chat with tech support:
Tim B: 9:08PMActually your address has 4G network, it catches the 5G signal but do not support. That is why it does not work on 5G, I can see the 5G is extending to your area, and soon you will hear a good news. Then once you connect it to 5G, it will be 10 times faster then 4G.
You: 9:09PMSo I am not the only customer with this issue in this area?
Tim B: 9:09PMYou are right.
You: 9:10PMSo I should keep my network set to 4g and avoid 5g until further notice?
Tim B: 9:10PMYou are correct.
I took a few speed tests while connected to 5G in north Florida. at best 24mbps, throughout the day it's around 1-3mbps. I'm assuming it's on one of t-mobiles low bands.
edit: I was on band 2. I used that app in another thread to only select a few to choose from, it jumped on band 66 and speeds ~100mbps. Nice.

Here is my chat with tech support:
Tim B: 9:08PM Actually your address has 4G network, it catches the 5G signal but do not support. That is why it does not work on 5G, I can see the 5G is extending to your area, and soon you will hear a good news. Then once you connect it to 5G, it will be 10 times faster then 4G.

Lmao. Don't hold your breath.
I am in a 5G area and it is barely faster than LTE. However, I *do* get service in areas that I didn't have service before, so that is a definite improvement.

Yeah, I don't really notice a huge speed difference. But I purposely went to three areas in my city that I usually don't get any reception or bad reception, and I was able to a decent signal now. So I'm definitely glad about that, since I do Doordash part-time and need my internet to work doing those deliveries.
At my house on T-Mobile I’m getting about 80 d/l and 6 u/l on 5g, and 150 d/l and 25 u/l on 4g. Pretty unimpressed so far. With the jump from 3g to 4g there was a huge, tangible difference in speeds. I certainly didn’t lose speed.
I am on Sprint and getting 5G. At night, I got 71.4Mbps speed. I don't exactly remember the day but I think it was around 30-35Mbps

80 is about right for tmo/spr nationwide 5g.. u have to keep in mind theres 3 different 5g networks.. nationwide uses the low end which allows for more coverage but slower speeds which is what most are on..
sprint was using mid band which i pulled over 500 consistently (im in phoenix) but since the merger and about 2 weeks ago they cut the mid band from sprint in favor of tmo 5g network making my s10 5g and 7pro5g no longer able to connect to 5g networm as theyre not compatible..
basically cureently most are stuck with low band nationwide 5g as they expand their mid range and only certain urban areas will get mmWave which is 1gb+ speeds..
mmWave requires thousands of towers in covered areas as it doesnt have as much range..
what i am saying is itll get better as time goes and most other carriers dont even have a 5g connection across the us so tmo is ahead of the game..
also dont expect 1gb+ mmwave 5g anytime soon or at all unless u live in an urban area

You're not gonna notice any speed difference on TMobile 5g. Sprints 5g has the best if both worlds. Good penetration through objects and faster than 4g with better latency. Too bad it's not available to all TMobile customers yet. That's what I'm waiting for...

sprints 5g is also being disabled if not already in favor of tmobile 5g network.. if u read any news ud know even that sprints own 5g devices r no longer able to connect to 5g as of 4/28 except for the s20 5g devices which connect to tmo nationwide 5g now.
on the bright side sprimt customers that had older 5g devices such as s10 5g are being allowed to trade in devife for s20 5g devices at discounted rates if they receive a targeted offer from sprint.

Wow that's totally weird cause TMobile themselves said they are allowing their TMobile customers in New York and Pennsylvania to use sprints 5g service. I guess I should've known that when they said they are expanding their TMobile service to include sprints 5g that it a actually meant they are removing the service. They need to work better on their communication.

It was last week. But I guess, again, when they say something they obviously mean the opposite of what they said. Those New York residents are just magically getting increased speeds.
Since the merger my speeds doubled since March. I am on tmobile five miles from NYC. Basically the other side of the Hudson River in NJ. 120mbps up and 60mbs down. Its not the greatest but its still good.

[Visual Poll] 5G Speeds

Mods:Feel free to move this if its in the wrong place!
For those of you lucky enough to live or pass through a 5G area, what kind of speeds have you been getting? Feel free to post screenshots and blur out any personal info!
Lol was talking to my provider today about 5G my speeds are awful so I just use 4G, I get about 10-50Mb on 5G and 99+ Mb on 4G which is more than enough.. course it's great to have a lot of speed but anything over 200 is overkill really..
Maybe one day they'll fix their network but I doubt it..
Great to see the speeds you're getting.
I'm in the UK on three btw.
Shocking speeds.
My old network EE gave me 275Mb + on 4G superior network, three is awful.

5G is a lot more dependant on signal strength. With 3/4 to 1/2 4G+ at home I get anywhere from 60-130 down. That 5G was outside a shop a few miles away, so had full signal. I'm also on Three (I wouldn't be speed testing 5G if I didn't have unlimited data, that test used nearly 1GB data). The 4g in my city centre is terrible though, the network is very overcrowded. We will be safe on 5G for a little while until it becomes more mainstream on phones and three gets overcrowded again. EE is great for pure coverage I agree, but for a long time they didn't give unlimited data, and given I use over 150gb a month, I need it as most packages are no where near that lol
Edit: when you pick a server, try one closer to you, and also just try ASK4 in Sheffield. That's a super fast server for me even though I'm no where near it. My 5g test was to that server

I'm in London, I've tested this everywhere and i have tonnes of data.. I've tested all over London, on tops of buildings in Oxford Street, kinds cross, Ruislip, Holborn, to name but a few.
It's always crap.
Why on earth do you use 150GB? Don't you have WiFi anywhere you go?
I can manage with next to no data usage, WiFi at home, WiFi at work.
I've tried different servers but I'll see what happens with the Sheffield one..
Cheers.
I get up to 250 for download and 50 for upload

I have WiFi at home, but I have unlimited data - according to three I'm not anywhere near a top 1% user either! ? I'm mobile IT tech. A lot of places I go to are in the middle of nowhere, and either have no WiFi (middle of field etc), won't give me access (some companies provision by MAC address, so for a short 1 hour job it's not worth their time provisioning my device properly), or it's so slow I may as well be using dialup so I tend to use my phone's connection with my laptop. I also stream some pretty HQ music so that adds up, but max I've ever used a month on that is like 10GB
If your area is crap, it's probably going to be crap even using ASK4's Sheffield server. I just noticed that your connection screenshot went quite high, then super low, so it looked like it was a little unstable. ASK4 is usually stable for testing for me, so thought it was worth a try!
I get 696mb download and 45mb upload.

About 5g.
I have european version in2023 (8gb/128gb, black color) , but my phone have no 5g in Settings > SIM & network settings > Preferred network type.
On Samsung Note 10+ 5g, have 5g on Settings, on the same network.
Do you friends who have the same version & live in Europa have it ?

This isn't a support thread. You should start your own thread in Q&A
I do have an IN2023 though, 12/256 and I have 5G, even used it recently. It's dependant on a few things, from carrier enabling it, to your sim card being 5g capable. Try contacting your carrier, works fine here and I'm on EU firmware
With the same SIM i got 5g on ****ty Samsung note 10+ 5g.

Then the phone may not be allowed on the networks 5G, or it may not support that networks bands. Again, call your carrier and check, they will probably sort it for you

I feel sorry for the WiFi speed at 1 and 7 haha
Sometimes my 5G shows up as LTE In speedtest. Seems you have one of those too. It looks like 3 are capping out 5G at around 690, or that's all our phones can manage, I'm not sure. That's around my top speed too!

I got nearly a gigabit on the weekend. Telstra's 5G is pretty good.

Of course, you are wrong !
I got new 5g SIM, still nothing about 5g in Settings > Preffered network type. OnePlus 8 Pro does Not have 5g for my network, maybe to all my country neworks.
So, yeah, it's the phone! Not network!
I have talkt with OnePlus guys and they told me that will be solved in future updates.

That doesn't make me wrong, I'm not sure you understood. I'm saying it IS the phone. In the UK. Some networks will not allow a phone on 5G unless you buy it from them. The phone would work, but the network is not allowing that phone to use 5G. I assume its very similar in other countries, I know the US does this for some networks. The phone is compatible, but the network isn't pushing the settings to allow the phone to work, or the phone is failing to apply the correct carrier settings update to enable the 5G. TL;DR its the phone
